There are lots of things happening in Biggar this summer. Not only great events like the provincial swim meet but our infrastructure is being upgraded as well. New sidewalks and street paving are in the works. The rink is being spruced up in anticipation for winter sports. The sewer lines are being serviced.

Biggar gets funding for new water and sewer mains Biggar is the recipient of infrastructure funding to the tune of $1,545,641 for water and sewer main replacement. This is part of the Small Communities Fund according to a news release.

Political parties should pay their own way

by Todd MacKay, Prairie director Governments spend money on all kinds of foolish things from robotic Christmas trees to beer growlers to pensions for former members of parliament who are criminals. The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) works hard to reduce government waste and we’re not going to run out of work any time soon.

But accountability is another key pillar of our work so we don’t quibble over the funding for one government function: democratic institutions.

A debate is rag-

ing as to whether it’s right for Prime Minister Stephen Harper to call a very early election and some people are concerned about additional costs incurred by a long campaign.

The reality is that the most expensive day of an election is the last one. Most of the public money is spent to collect and count the votes on Election Day. It’s like farming: whether the growing season is long or short most of the expenses come at seeding and harvest and the days in the middle don’t impact the cost very much.

We don’t

begrudge the money spent by Elections Canada regardless of the length of the campaign because elections are worth it.

But we certainly do begrudge the money political parties siphon out of taxpayers’ pockets.

For every dollar a political party spends during a campaign, taxpayers end up paying 60 cents. That’s because political parties get a rebate of 60 per cent for campaign costs from government coffers after the election is over. A longer campaign would give political parties the chance to

spend more and therefore bill taxpayers for more costs. That’s not right.

However, the problem isn’t the length of the campaign. If political parties want to spend their own money, they’re welcome to campaign as long as they like. The problem is the ridiculous rebate they take from taxpayers afterwards. We need to get rid of those rebates and force political parties to raise money on their own merits.

While we’re on the topic, there’s another campaign finance issue that needs to be fixed.

When people

donate $400 to a charity, they might get about $140 back on their taxes.

If people give $400 to a political party, they get $300 back on their taxes.

The House of Commons can turn almost any issue into a deskthumping, opponent-heckling roar of debate. Ask why political donations should get a better deal than charitable donations and it’s quiet enough to hear crickets chirping.

Political parties are good for society and even heated debates are healthy, but surely nobody thinks the work they’re doing

is more important than the care charitable organizations provide for people who desperately it. Political donations get big rebates simply because politicians are the ones making the rules.

Whether political candidates are on the campaign trail for a

few weeks or a few months, they should spend their own money. Right now they take donations and spend money with a wink and a nod because taxpayers will be footing most of the bill anyway. A longer election will make that bill bigger.

But the problem

isn’t the bill itself, the problem is the wrong people are paying for it. Political parties will be more accountable if they have to earn donations by persuading people to buy into their vision for the country rather than reaching for rebates from taxpayers.

These findings have several implications: First, they show that inequality measurements are quite sensitive to the choice of income recipient and the choice of income definition.

Second, they show that looking at individuals rather than families, we find that income inequality has, in fact, declined a bit since the early 1980s—a result that is confirmed using American data as well.

Finally, these results suggest that caution is advisable when we look at studies of income inequality. Dra-

matic differences can be obtained if we change our initial definitions and indicators.

Income inequality is a very complex matter. Substantial social and economic changes have happened over the past few decades and it would be surprising if measured inequality was not impacted as well. The fact, however, is that it has not increased very much—if we look at economic families—or at all, if we look at individual incomes.

Of course, income inequality is not the best measure of how the living standards of Canadians changes. For that,

we use the goods and services that people actually consume, which is the subject of a future study on inequality to be published by the Fraser Institute.

Income inequality in Canada

You can hardly find a current affairs magazine, newspaper or television program that has not dealt with income inequality recently. In December 2013, President Obama called America’s growing income gap “the defining challenge of our time.” Whether the income gap is a problem or a “challenge” is something for another article.

However,the question of whether the income gap, at least in Canada, is indeed grow-

ing is something I wish to address here.

In a new study for the Fraser Institute, I and my colleagues examine the measurement of income inequality and how changes in the definition of income or the definition of the income recipient can have a major impact on the results. Indeed, and this is a principal finding of the study, we find that after-tax income inequality for individuals has actually declined over the past three decades for which we have publically available data.

It is important to explain why differences in

income definition and in income recipient matters.

A great many studies of income inequality focus on “earnings”— the wages and salaries that employed people receive and any net income from small business (non-corporate) enterprises. The problem with earnings is that today we have proportionately more people with zero earnings than was the case three decades ago. Despite the fact that there are more two-earner families, we also have more seniors with no earnings; more students living on their own (with no earnings); and more govern-

ment transfer (i.e. welfare) recipients with little or no earnings.

The more people with zero earnings, the greater the measured level of inequality. As well, the more million dollar earners (business, sports and entertainment superstars), the greater is measured inequality.

All of this has happened, so we are not surprised to see greater earnings inequality. From 1982 to 2010, earnings inequality rose by 24 per cent using the widely known Gini coefficient as our indicator of inequality.

Further, families are smaller than they were three

decades ago and this means that, on average, there are fewer people with which to share family income. So, if we define income as after-tax income and then adjust for family size, we get a different picture. Today the income inequality of economic families has only increased by 10 per cent over the past three decades. And, if we look at individuals (any adult with any income at all) and their after-tax (or disposable) income, we show that inequality has actually declined by 4 per cent over the past three decades, again

However, and economic depression and the First World War intervened. After the war a Victory Stampede was held to celebrate peace.

That was the start. In a few years, attendance reached 200,000 and it has grown since.

Early events included steer wrestling which was an invention by Bill Pickett, a Wild West performer. But many of the other events emerged from ranching skills: saddlebronc riding, tie-down roping, bareback riding. Anyone familiar with cattle knows these skills are needed in rounding up cattle especially during branding time.

I attended the Calgary Stampede quite a few times during my younger years. It was a

“Piping Plovers are small migratory shorebirds that nest in Saskatchewan during the summer months, and spend the winter months on the coastal beaches of the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Islands such as Cuba,” says Rebecca Magnus, Habitat Stewardship Coordinator with Nature Saskatchewan.

“Piping Plovers will begin migrating in early August after the young have spent the month of July practicing their flying skills, and growing quickly in preparation for migration.”

The Piping Plover is an endangered species, which means that this species could become extirpated from Canada in the future. A total of 774 individual Piping

Plovers were counted in Saskatchewan during the 2011 International Piping Plover Breeding Census. Unfortunately, this number is lower than the 1,435 plovers counted in Saskatchewan during the 2006 census.

Piping Plovers face numerous threats, including fluctuating water levels, predating, inclement weather, and livestock that can cause pugging and hummocking on shorelines (which can cause chicks to become trapped) and can trample nests.

Piping Plovers, not to be confused with Killdeer, have a single black neckband, whereas Killdeer have two black neckbands.

Piping Plovers are also smaller than Killdeer, and have orange legs rather than the typically dark yellow legs common to Killdeer.

Plovers have a lighter grey back than the

Killdeer’s brown back, and the Piping Plover’s breast is white. Another distinguishing feature of the Piping Plover is its orange bill that is black tipped.

Nature Saskatchewan has a voluntary land stewardship program for landowners with Piping Plovers on their land.

This program, Plovers on Shore, involves a voluntary “handshake” agreement where the landowner agrees to conserve shoreline habitat for these endangered birds.

It is summer on the Prairies and that means festivals, fairs and rodeos. Rodeos.

Cowboys. Horses. Cowgirls. Buckin Broncos.

Chuckwagons. Roping.

You name it, somehow the events have crept into the rodeo scene.

Rodeos date back a long way -- the 1600s. It relates to the way cowboys cared for animals on the open range. Roping, riding and herding were essential skills needed to do their jobs.

Looking for a bit of fun these skills evolved into competitions among the men.

Then there were the Wild West shows that toured North America in the 1800s. These shows presented a view of the way of life on the range. In some ways the

perceived image given at these shows helped to shape the stereotypes we have of cowboy life.

The entertainment featured riding, roping and shooting, steer wrestling.

These Wild West shows were the basis of the Calgary Stampede.

Guy Weadick, founder of “the greatest show on earth”, took the concept of the shows and came up with his own vision.

To create a genuine cowboy contest that tested the skills and horsemanship required by working cowboys.

At the first stampeded in 1912, cowboys gathered from across North America to test their wrangling skills.

Weadick, himself, was a vaudeville performer.

He envisioned a worldclass competition that would celebrate the culture of what he called the “disappearing” Old

“smaller” affair in those days. There were the competitions and exhibits and rides. And, to us it seemed big enough but when compared by today’s stampede those days were small affairs.

Today the Calgary Stampede has grown into one of the world’s premiere events.

Cowboys are still predominately from North America but there are some from other continents. Also the prizes are larger. The basics are the same -- skills needed by ranchers -but it is more of a sport now.

These guys are professionals. They go to school to learn the skills. There are procircuits. Some say the lines have blurred between honest to goodness cowboys, rodeo cowboys and then the “wannabees” - the Hollywood cowboys who have romanticized the image. The Calgary Stampede is popular with many celebrities, including the Royal family whose members have visited many times.

The rodeos in our communities may be small events compared to the Calgary version, but they are just as thrilling and packed with fun for everyone.

Balderdash, et cetera When we were just small boys on the other side of the river north of here, one of the local young men was nicknamed “Bull”. Y.T. never did find out exactly why, because he didn’t have the build of a “chinashop wrecker”! Mebbe it was because a lot of the lie he told, weren’t completely true – I dunno!

It really doesn’t matter that much, but that was our first contact with the figure of speech known as B.S.!

Having spent some time in His Majesties forces and gotten used to the “good” and “bad” sides of the expression, Y.T. (mostly in fun!) has stooped to using B.S. quite a bit himself!

Sometimes exaggeration is fun in a way, but mind you, Y.T. doesn’t recommend it as a way

of life! Now that we have computers, iPads and Blackberries all over the place, anyone making a serious B.S. statement is sure riding for a fall in a few seconds! Even Yours Truly finds that he can’t tell a respectable lie anymore!

A real example of this “B.S.”, “Balderdash” and “Poppycock” entertainment angle happened recently in Saskatoon!

A couple of the boys from our town got together and procured an agricultural machine agency, and when Yours Truly went in to their Grand Opening, a young salesman approached me and asked politely, “Can I help you, sir?”

There were a 100 people there looking to spend a few dollars, so meek, unimportant, and shy Y.T. thought that

maybe he should act like a B.T.O. (Big Time Operator!).

“Yeah,” Y.T. replied, “I want to buy a whole row of tractors, a whole fleet of your biggest trucks and a whole bunch of combines!”

The young salesman looked at me incredulously and was just going to say something smart when one of the owners drew near.

“Hello Bob!” he said (I think that he had gone to school with some of our children!). “Can I get you a cup of coffee?”

And away he went to get one!

The young salesman looked me in the eye for a moment, then, shaking his head, walked away, possibly wondering if that crazy, old, rundown guy was really going to buy anything! So much for B.S., eh?

And then there was “Balderdash”!

Mebbe readers have forgotten this one too, eh?

Just after WWII was over in Europe, our Regiment (the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada) was pulled back out of Germany, into the little Dutch town of Nijver-dahl, and quartered out amongst the civilian homes!

There were quite a few activities lined up

to entertain the over-hypered troop and one day we were paraded down to the town hall to see the famous “Dunbells”!

Everyone was silent in the big hall, when the lights were lowered and the evening’s entertainment started.

A tall dapper man, wearing a stove-pipe hat and a dark cloak strode onto the stage.

He threw part of this scarlet-lined cloak over his shoulder and recited imperiously: “There’s a one-eyed yellow idol to the north of Katmandu. There’s a little marble cross below the town.”

We were all sitting there intensely waiting for him to deliver the next dramatic lines, when a loud rough voice behind us roared into the quiet room.

“Balderdash!”

And we all looked back as a ratly fellow with a monocle and swagger stick, shook his fist at the man

by Karen Kammer, Recreation Coordinator Wow, it is hard to believe that it is already August. Summer has just flown by and we have been taking advantage of sitting outside and getting those sun rays.

Over the last week at the Lodge we had exercises and Bean Bag Toss.

Tuesday was current events and sing along with one of the residents playing the piano.

Wednesday we had bowling in the morning.

We had a big crowd out.

This is a large version of 10 pin bowling. Only one resident got a strike.

After lunch we took a bus load of residents to Rosetown for DQ ice cream sundaes. It was delicious and we sure had a sugar high from it.

Thursday after breakfast was Bible Study.

We learned about how Jesus turned water into wine and how he was on the mountain. Exercises

was on later. Bingo was at 2:30.

Friday was Barbecue Club down Autumn House.

Burgers, hotdogs, beans and macaroni salad was served.

In the afternoon we had country gospel music from Henry Bleile.

Saturday was Home Sweet Home Bingo and a coffee party.

Sunday was 1-1 time and the Jantzens came for Sunday church service.

By the time you read this, Corey Chamblin may have already been fired.

But I highly doubt it. And the more I hear and think about it, he may not be dismissed at all.

Amidst the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ 0-6 start, which included a 30-5 loss at Edmonton on Friday, a report came out via TSN over the weekend that Rider GM Brendan Taman was set to recommend the firing of head coach Corey Chamblin to club President Craig Reynolds.

No one knows where TSN insider Gary Lawless got this information.

Oddly, this came less than a week after Lawless told the nation Taman would not be firing Chamblin, thus putting his own job in jeopardy.

Hence, the top sentence of this column. Things are changing by the min-

ute here in Riderville and I’ve been doing my best to stay in the shadows and try to report only the correct information, if any at all.

So as of today, Chamblin is employed by the Saskatchewan Roughriders as head coach. In fact Saturday night, Chamblin told a reporter it’s “business as usual�.

However Chamblin’s paid to win football games and the club is 0-6. The speculation is reasonable.

But let’s go back for a second and examine Friday’s game and the reason this club is off to its worst start since 1979.

After the game the players and the coach generally agreed they had one of their better games on defense all year, holding Edmonton to 23 or so points (7 were scored on a pick six thrown by rookie Rider quarterback Brett Smith).

The trouble here is the Roughriders won the coin toss but gave the Eskimos the ball and the wind to open the game. The home team promptly marched the ball 76-yards down the field and opened the scoring with a 27-yard touchdown reception

by Kenny Stafford for a 7-0 lead at the 5:40 mark. That’s all the offense they’d need for the rest of the game.

So there’s that.

Saskatchewan quarterback Brett Smith was in a hole before he even took his first pro snap. And then the penalties started. The Rider players had said before the game they all needed to help out their rookie quarterback by cleaning up their game but they then proceeded to take 17 penalties for 127 yards.

Many of them took great plays, and first downs, by Smith and his receivers off the board. Every offensive lineman was flagged on the night with the exception of Brendon Labatte. The receivers took turns going offside.

The Riders averaged 13.6 penalties per game going into the Edmonton contest so they far exceeded that total Friday night. And Chris

Jones’ Eskimos kept their penalty total down to seven in this game.

The Riders are in no way a disciplined team, although we’ve been told otherwise.

And therefore, Chamblin is on the hotseat at 0-6.

No matter that the Riders’ top two quarterbacks are down and the club has been hit by a rash of adversity.

These are not your Dad’s Roughriders. Losing will not be tolerated. “Oh ya there’s no setback on that end,�

Brendan Taman told me before Friday’s game. “This is a ‘wins’ business.

Whoever’s playing at whatever position, we’re expected to go win the game.�

My follow-up question to that was if Taman’s getting an edict from the higher-ups of “make the playoffs or else!�?

“We’ve been in the business long enough to know they don’t have to say much for us to know we have to win,� Taman explained. “Whatever comes from above, comes from above. But all me and Corey can do is put the best guys out there and try to win games. We’re working towards that and hopefully we can get that accomplished.�

The TSN report threw the franchise into chaos over the weekend. President Craig Reynolds probably felt like he’s trying to navigate a monsoon in a dingy. He and Taman huddled up on Sunday but the contents of their meeting aren’t known. At least not by me.

I was half expecting to hear Chamblin walked into the offices and demanded to be fired given the fact he was effectively pantsed on

national television Saturday afternoon.

However from what I can gather, he hasn’t.

And a CFL powerbroker told me the possible replacements named by Lawless - Paul Lapolice and Mike Benevides – are hesitant to come here due to the toxic environment which has been created.

How could you tie a can to Chamblin with no one lined up to replace him?

Stay tuned. This will only get more interesting from here on in.

Trade talks a complex issue

When it comes to world trade the idea of free movement of goods is held up as an idea the world should aspire to.

But when country officials sit down to hammer out trade deals there are more potholes to traverse than a three-hour drive on a secondary highway in Saskatchewan.

A case in point Pacific Rim trade ministers recently failed to hammer out a deal to free up trade between a dozen nations after a dispute flared up over auto trade between Japan and North Amer-

ica, New Zealand dug in over dairy trade, and no agreement was reached on monopoly periods for next-generation drugs.

The failure to achieve a deal probably is not a surprise to anyone.

The more players at the table the more issues to overcome. There are many long standing areas of friction between long time trade partners which have a tendency to flare up again at a negotiation table.

If you doubt that think how often the United States pointed at the old Canadian Wheat Board

as an issue even after courts had deemed it was not.

Currently you can bet the issue of Country Of Origin Labelling (COOL) will be a raw nerve between the US and Canada for some time moving forward.

Now consider what the Trans-Pacific Partnership was trying to accomplish. The TPT had trade ministers from the 12 nations negotiating toward a deal which would stretch from Japan to Chile and cover 40 per cent of the world economy.

According to a recent story at www.producer. com “the TPP seeks to meld bilateral questions of market access for exports with onesize-fits-all standards on issues ranging from workers’ rights to environmental protection and dispute settlement between governments and foreign investors.”

Those are pretty heady goals.

story noted, “the talks, which drew about 650 negotiators, 150 journalists and hundreds of stakeholders,” you can bet every line off any deal was scrutinized and argued and rebuffed over and over.

The problem is simple, countries talk of a desire to freer trade, but in reality they mean they want easier access for their goods, yet to maintain a level of protection for their own favoured industries.

The two are of course opposing viewpoints, albeit the motivation is understandable.

Canada would like freer access for say pork, as we produce far more pork that we can consume domestically, so it must find and export home.

But we’d also like to protect our dairy sector as there is a level of concern about relying on another country shipping a staple such as milk thousands of miles

to have a mom pour on her family’s breakfast cereal each morning.

In the end far-reaching trade deals are rarely accomplished simply, but rather by gaining small victories over the longer term.

There will eventually be a TPP, but whether it is a widely meaningful deal, or merely a waterdowned deal signed to save face among politicians is yet to be seen.

Wearing a helmet while off-roading is a no-brainer. If you crash your ATV and aren’t wearing a helmet, you could suffer a brain injury.

These injuries can result in life-long disabilities and affect physical functions such as speech, fine and gross motor control, as well as alter an individual’s personality, memory, and emotions. Wearing a helmet is an effective way in reducing the risk of a brain injury in the event of a crash.

As part of the Saskatchewan All-Terrain Vehicle Association (SATVA) safety campaign Know Your Limits, General Manager John Meed is reminding everyone to gear up before ATVing.

In Saskatchewan, a helmet and eye protection are required when riding an ATV on public land.

“When it comes to ATVing, we are not only asking people to think with their head, but think about their head,” says

Meed. “By refusing to wear a helmet while you off-road, you are gambling with your life in the event of an accident.

With all of the information surrounding brain injuries these days, there is no excuse to not protect your head.”

When selecting a helmet, Meed says there are a number of things to consider. Whatever helmet you select must be approved for use when riding an ATV in Canada, which is noted by a DOT or Snell certification. ATVers must all consider the amount of eye and face protection provided by the helmet: s /PEN FACE HELMET provides no additional protection to the face or eyes. If an open-face helmet is worn when riding an ATV, additional eye protection must be worn. s &ULL FACE HELMET PROvides additional protection to the face, eyes, mouth, and chin. s /FF ROAD OR -OTOCROSS helmet: provides the

greatest amount of protection to the face, with increased protection for the mouth and chin.

And if you’re worried about how your helmet looks, don’t be. There are thousands of varieties to choose from, whether it be one with solid colours, a mixture of several colours or even various images. There is certainly a helmet to fit everyone’s budget.

“Everyone will have their preference when it comes to helmets,” says Meed. “Some prefer to have their face exposed and wear eye protection.

Others feel more comfortable with the maximum protection. Whatever your preference, the important thing is you must wear one.”

And don’t forget about helmet maintenance, cautions Meed. All helmets must be replaced after five years. The material that a helmet is made from degrades over time and although a helmet may look the same as when you bought it, it will not necessarily protect the head and brain in the event of a crash.

Helmets are meant to protect for only one impact and should be replaced in the event of a collision, or if any dents or cracks appear.

Meed also explains that other protective clothing is required to protect your eyes and skin from cuts, scrapes and punctures, including: ankle boots, gloves, a long sleeved shirt and long pants.

Despite being a core set, Magic Origins certainly brought a lot of new cards into the Standard environment, and with new cards come new mechanics.

While the Goblin War Drums effect has ďŹ nally been codiďŹ ed into a keyword with Menace, and Scry now ďŹ nds itself with evergreen status, our new all star is Renown.

Renown perhaps shares the most design space with the mechanic Monstrosity from Theros block. Both are mechan-

ics with an associated variable, only appear on creatures, and once resolved place both +1/+1 counters and a status denotation on said creature. Some of these creatures even have extra effects when they gain said status denotation (such as Ember Swallower clearing out lands from the ďŹ eld, or Relic Seeker searching for an Equipment from your deck).

Where these two mechanics diverge, however, is how they are brought to resolution.

Where as Monstrosity is an activated ability, and can be turned on at instant speed in response to other actions, Renown is a triggered ability, and goes off on it’s own, very speciďŹ c, timeline. Renown requires a creature in question to deal combat damage to your opponent, so the action of becoming renowned will only ever happen during the tail end of the combat phase. It is also worth noting that, just like with Monstrosity, Renown can only ever be resolved once per creature. They get to grow once, and that’s it.

build around this mechanic, there are a couple of ways you can go with it. This next deck list is a brew that I am currently working on, and goes tall with the mechanic.

With cards like Outland Colossus and Nessian Wilds Ravager, this deck lives in the midrange, though it does try to set a brisk pace.

It is also loaded to the gills with ďŹ ght effects to keep the way clear for its Renown creatures to get their triggers. This deck’s dream, however,

is to land a Temur Battle Rage on an Outland Colossus. Since the Colossus can only be blocked by one creature, it is likely to have enough damage that it’s ďŹ rst swing granted by the Battle Rage to Trample over and trigger Renown, with the six +1/+1 counters getting to resolve before the normal damage follows through for another 12.

While Goblin Glory Chaser might be more on theme for this deck, I’ve found in my play testing so far that the Haste, extra toughness out of the gate, and the ability to leach extra stats from other spells wins out, letting the Monastery Swiftspear stay in the deck for the time being.

Heir of the Wilds, on the other hand, is an absolute workhorse. Originally put in the deck so that the ďŹ ght effects could take on even larger targets, or to deal with other creatures with Deathtouch, it has proven just to be exceptionally efďŹ cient, especially in a deck full of Ferocious

enablers.

Some decks will give this brew a touch of trouble, however. When paired up against Blue/ Black control, for example, you might have difďŹ culty getting your spells to resolve, and your creatures might not live long enough to make a lasting impact. Nothing is worse for this deck than getting a good opening blitz, ripping your opponent down to four life, only to have the board reset and all your subsequent threats countered.

For situations such as these, I’d highly recommend bringing in three or four Molten Vortex from the sideboard. If you are lucky you can land one of these on turn one before your foe’s countermagic can come online, and late game it is cheap enough that you can have it ride in the wake of another spell, baiting out a counter spell with an Acolyte or Fall of the Hammer, then landing the Vortex once they’ve already burned their counter for the turn.

Over 60 Star members attended from chapters in North Battleford, Prince Albert, Regina, Estevan, Kindersley Saskatoon, Govan, Lloydminster Unity, Biggar, and Kitscoty, Alta.

Ten Grand family members were in attendance.

The business part of the meeting had Acacia approve the $500 Teale Scholarship Award to Gordon May for his future studies in welding; donation to Biggar Skating Club community calendar, visitation to shut-in members and other provincial chapters. The chapter donated to WGM special project of Pediatric Cancer; two ofďŹ ces were honoured by the WGM and WGP and were presented with a gift. Members were planning on attending the Last Meota Tea and fundraiser on July 25.

Obituaries Arthur ‘Dennis’ Hoppe October 13, 1948 - July 27, 2015 A. Dennis Hoppe passed away peacefully on July 27, 2015, at Biggar Hospital with his wife and daughters by his side after a 2 -1/2 year battle with kidney and lung cancer.

Dennis was born October 13, 1948 in Biggar, Sask. He grew up on a farm north of Biggar and attended school in Biggar until Grade 11. He completed his high school at Camrose Lutheran College in 1966. Following his high school he moved to Peace River, Alberta to work in a chartered accountant’s office, Nash & Nash, a work/study firm. He then moved back to the family farm in 1972 to farm. During this time he also worked at Landis Co-op as their accountant until 1975.

In 1975, he found the love of his life and married Theresa Litzenberger in 1976. In 1980, they welcomed their first daughter, Laura, and second daughter, Allison, in 1982. He was a devoted father and husband. He loved taking his daughters on tractor and combine rides, hiking, fishing, canoeing, camping, family game nights and lots of family holiday trips.

In 1985, Dennis purchased shares in Wy-Lee Industries Ltd., a North Battleford business, later changing the name to Select Industries after incorporating with family. Dennis was the General Manager and custom designer of many unique projects. In 2007, the business was sold.

Dennis welcomed two sons-in-law, Neal (Laura) Maier and Neil (Allison) Isley. Later, he became a grandfather to Colby and Barret Isley.

Dennis had many hobbies and interests, including model trains, farm toy collection, ‘56 Fairlane literature, wood working, metal working and custom fabricating his inventions. His carpentry talents were shared with neighbours, friends and especially his family. He also loved travelling and spending time with Theresa. With the arrival of his grandsons, Dennis then enjoyed giving skid steer, tractor, and combine rides, watching his model trains and enjoying their cuddles.

In 2004, he purchased his dream car, a 1956 Ford Fairlane.

He restored it with the help of his son-in-law, Neil Isley. He completed the restoration in November 2011, started taking it to show and shines in 2012 where he won numerous awards. He continued to show it until September 2013.

Dennis served on the Board of Directors at Landis Co-op, Redeemer Lutheran Church council and Emmanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery Committee.

Dennis is survived by his wife, Theresa; his daughters, Laura (Neal) Maier of Regina, Sask., and Allison (Neil) Isley of Delisle, Sask. and grandchildren, Colby and Barret; sister, Lorraine (Bill) Black; brother, Harvey Hoppe; sister, Bernice Veitch; sister, Myrna Russell; brother, Ernie (Cindy) Hoppe; sister, Betty (Randy) Becker; brother, Erroll Hoppe; mother and father-in-law, Mildred and Wilfred Litzenberger of Candle Lake, Sask.; sisters-in-law, Marion (Bruce) Garstang, Jeanette (Warren) Weinert, Karen (Scott) Gourley; brother-in-law, Darryl (LoriAnn) Litzenberger; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

He was predeceased by his parents, Bill and Martha; sister, Marlene Schafer; brother-in-law, Ed Schafer; brother, Clarence Hoppe; in-laws, Bill Russell, Bev Veitch, Marcella Hoppe.

The Funeral Service was held on Wednesday, August 5, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church with Pastor Mark Kleiner officiating. Eulogist was Jeff Black, his nephew. Honourary Bearers were all those who shared in Dennis’ life; Active Urn Bearer was Neil Isley. Interment followed at Emmanuel Lutheran Cemetery.

Mary’s faith was always foremost in her life and she was very active in the Presbyterian Church, be it, in Biggar Sask., Vernon B.C., Red Deer, Alta., or Williams Lake, B.C. Mary’s love of family was her passion, especially the little ones and she shared great joy in their lives and accomplishments.

Mary was predeceased by her parents, James and Mary Book; her brother, Bill Book; and her husband , Gordon Cornish.

A memorial service was held at the Williams Lake Seniors Village in Williams Lake on July 31st, 2015 and a Graveside Service will be held at Rosemount Cemetery, RM of Rosemount Sask. at a later date.

June 15, 1931 - July 24, 2015 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of William Morris Roach on July 24, 2015 in St. Paul’s Hospital, Saskatoon, Sask. after a short illness.

Left to mourn is his wife of 56 years, Kay; his son, David; son, Bill Jr. (Susan) and grandchildren Kassandra, Landon and Brennan; son, Michael (Candace), and granddaughters Jacquelyn and Lindsay; and son, Ken, ( Johanna), and granddaughter Emma, along with his sister, Millie Roche of Palm Springs, Calif.; brothers, Mel Roach of Port Coquitlam, B.C. and Jim Turanski of Newport, Rhode Island; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Bill was born in Kindersley Sask. on June 15,1931 and started his career on the railway in the 1940’s as a callboy, eventually becoming a fireman, then engineer for the CNR and then finishing his career as an engineer for VIA Rail. He retired in 1995.

His first love was his family, marrying Catharina Harjung on June 15, 1959. They were blessed with four boys over the next six years. Bill worked hard to provide a good home for his family. He loved the outdoors and spent his free time taking the family on Sunday picnics to Maymont and summer vacations at Aquadeo.

His yard was a pride and joy and he spent hours keeping it in the park-like condition it is today. After retiring, golfing became another passion. Playing three rounds in a day was not uncommon and he especially loved spending time with his golfing buddies. Bowling filled his time in winter months and coffee at Weasie’s couldn’t be missed. He biked everyday to keep fit. His grandkids were everything to him and he couldn’t wait to spend time with them whenever possible. The grandchildren’s dog, Chloe, couldn’t wait for grandpa to take him on his run, either in Biggar, or at the park in Saskatoon. He will be missed forever by everyone.

Mary Elizabeth Cornish 1930 - 2015 The family is saddened to announce the passing of Mary Elizabeth Cornish of Williams Lake, B.C. on July 24, 2015 at the age of 84.

Left to cherish Mary’s memory are: sister-in-law, Vivian Clayton, Saskatoon Sask.; step-daughter, Dale (Earl) Donahue, Williams Lake, B.C.; step-son, Larry ( Judy) Cornish, Calgary Alta.; and step-son, Robert Cornish, Aquadeo Beach, Sask.; grandchildren, great-grandchildren and especially, great, greatgrandchildren, cousins and dear friends.

Completing her schooling in Biggar, her working career included, working for CIBC, Mooney’s and Stedman’s, Sears, and O’Brien’s Green Lake and Careen Lake Lodge, and later on retiring from managing the golf course at the Battlefords Provincial Park.

Keith Beckett December 17, 1925 – July 27, 2015 With sadness, the family announces Keith’s passing after surgery on July 10, 2015 at Royal University Hospital, Saskatoon, Sask.

Keith was born at Cut Knife, Sask. and grew up on the family farm with his parents and four sisters, Dorothy, Betty, Ethel and Barb. He moved to Battleford, Sask. to work for CN Rail, then to Biggar, Sask. where he continued with CN and then VIA Rail until his retirement. Keith actively did construction work through these years; and after retirement from the CN, he started a rental business, Biggar Fix-It Rentals. When he turned 80, his daughter sold the business on him and he forgave her after a few years.

During all these years the family enjoyed lots of time at Little Loon Lake. Keith loved fishing and he spent many hours driving kids around the lake water skiing. He loved the evening fish frys and he used to build quite the campfires, lucky he didn’t set the trees on fire.

While Keith was still with the CN, he chaired the committee that was responsible for better pensions for the men who worked for CN and their widows. He made a number of trips to Ottawa.

He spent many hours volunteering during the construction of the New Horizons, renovations to the Majestic Theatre, and donated equipment for the Sandra Schmirler Park.

Keith loved farming. He enjoyed growing up on the family farm and spent lots of time at Ron and Deb’s farm in Kindersley.

He was always ready to fix something.

Keith spent the last nine weeks as a resident of Heritage Manor in Kindersley. It was a good time for him with excellent care, lots of outings to the farm and many tours checking crops.

On July 7, he fell and broke a hip, made it through surgery very well but contracted infection that was antibiotic resistant and efforts to save him failed.

Keith is survived by his wife, Nettie, of 62 years; his daughter, Deb (Ron) Smith; grandson, Derek ( Janine), and great-granddaughter, Ali, of Kindersley, Sask.; grandson, Brett of Saskatoon, Sask.; and his son, Glen (Connie) Beckett of Kelowna, B.C.; granddaughters, Ashley of Calgary, Alta., and Brittany, of Kelowna, B.C.; sisters, Ethel, and Barb (Carl) of Calgary, Alta. He is survived by many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Linda, in 1973; his parents; sisters, Betty and Dorothy of Calgary, Alta.

Memories of Keith and a Graveside Service will take place in Biggar at a later date.

Deadly parasites affect honey bee hives !CCORDING TO NEW Statistics Canada data, the number of honey bee colonies in the country is on the rise, but there are still many factors that can affect their health.

The most devastating factor is a tiny parasite less than a millimetre long, called the varroa MITE AND IT S PRESENT IN many honey bee hives across Canada.

Feeding on the blood –

or hemolymph – of the honey bee, the varroa mite can quickly infest an entire hive.

This weakens each individual honey bee and has a devastating effect on the whole colony, reducing its ability to withstand stress, like the extreme cold of the winter.

Without honey bees and the work they do to spread pollen, many vegetables, flowers, fruit

and nuts that we enjoy would not exist. Many OF THE WORLD S CROPS ARE dependent on honey bees and as a result it is in our best interest to keep them safe to avoid disease.
