Saying goodbye to one of God’s unique creations, the parishes of Landis and Biggar honoured Father Michel Bedard at the Biggar Community Hall, July 30. This truly humourous, gentle and genial man touched both communities in a deep and profound way. His religious leadership was one of grace and friendship. His jokes legendary, his smile a light in dark times, the communities gifted a Via Rail pass to his home, beloved T-shirts featuring the Biggar logo and, as an inside joke, an exceptionally large egg salad sandwich. Father Greg (below, right), of Unity and a friend of Father Bedard, said a few humourous stories about this already missed man!

Saskatchewan Agrees to Canadian Agricultural Partnership July 21, Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart joined Federal Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay, and agriculture ministers from across the country to reach an agreement on the Canadian Agricultural Partnership (CAP).

CAP is a five-year federal-provincial-territorial funding agreement that takes effect on April 1, 2018 and replaces Growing Forward 2 (GF2). It governs business risk management (BRM) programs such as Crop Insurance, AgriStability and AgriInvest and investments in strategic initiatives.

“The Canadian Agricultural Partnership will help ensure agriculture producers and industry have access to important funding to innovate, expand and help Saskatchewan remain a world-class agri-food producer and supplier,” Stewart said.

CAP will maintain the same level of funding as GF2. Canada

and Saskatchewan will invest a total of $388 million over five years for strategic initiatives in Saskatchewan. The combined provincial and federal funding will support a suite of programs focused on: markets and trade; science, research and innovation; environmental sustainability and climate change; valueadded agriculture and agri-food processing; and public trust.

The new agreement includes a change to AgriStability, allowing provinces and territories an option to trigger late participation. Producers would be able to enter the program even if they did not sign up by the deadline, with payments reduced by 20 per cent.

“Saskatchewan does not support late participation in AgriStability as we believe it goes directly against the principle of proactive risk management and does not fix a problem producers have identified,” Stewart said.

AgriStability addresses the negative consequences of Reference Margin Limits (RML) in AgriStability, introduced in GF2.

Hay quality is currently rated as nine per cent excellent, 61 per cent good, 25 per cent fair and five per cent poor.

Hay yields have been significantly less than normal for many producers

and hay will be in short supply this year in some areas. Most producers have indicated that there will not be a second cut of hay this year.

While some areas of the province received some rain this past week, many southern and central areas remain very dry.

Rainfall this past week ranged from nil to 98 millimetres in the Barthel area.

Across the province, topsoil moisture on crop-

land is rated as five per cent surplus, 35 per cent adequate, 38 per cent short and 22 per cent very short.

Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as four per cent surplus, 29 per cent adequate, 34 per cent short and 33 per cent very short.

in most regions of the province to help replenish the topsoil and fill out crops.

Crops are ripening quickly, with the majority ranging from poor to good condition.

Harvest is just beginning in some parts of the province, with pulses being desiccated and some winter cereal and pulse crops being combined.

The majority of crop damage is attributed to hot temperatures, strong winds, hail, localized flooding and lack of rain.

Several storms moved through the province late last week, with damage ranging from minimal to severe. There are also reports of insects such as grasshoppers, diamondback moths and aphids.

Producers are scouting for pests, haying and getting ready for harvest.

With this sustained stretch of dry weather, applications to Saskatchewan’s Farm and Ranch Water Infrastructure Program will be considered until September 30, past the current August 1 deadline. The program assists farmers and ranchers in developing sustainable water supplies for agricultural use.

These are implementing a minimum payment of $250 for both programs and capping AgriInvest payments at $10,000 per producer.

The province is pleased that the Western Livestock Price Insurance Program will continue under CAP. Governments will review BRM programs over the course of this agreement, starting with AgriStability this year. Findings from the AgriStablity review will be presented to ministers at their 2018 annual

meeting.

The provincial government, Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation and the federal government will work together on the transition to CAP to ensure the process is seamless for current and future funding recipients. The Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture has engaged with stakeholders throughout the negotiation of the new funding agreement, and intends to conduct further consultations before implementation on April 1, 2018.

Letter to the Editor…

Letter to the Editor: NAFTA negotiations will start soon and I’m wondering if Prime Minister Trudeau has prepared for Mr. Trump’s “America First” policies.

If Canada and Mexico can’t get a fair deal, do we have a “Plan B?” Mr. Trudeau has yet to consult with Canadians in any way. It’s good to see him building trade relations with other countries in case Mr. Trump proves to be impossible to deal with and no agreement can be made.

In my opinion NAFTA needs to be rewritten and modified in three major ways.

1) Remove all references to water as a good, service or investment and specifically exempt it from the private sector. Water is our most important and valuable resource and must be protected as a public right.

2) Eliminate Chapter II which gives corporations the right to sue government if any public policies denies them investment or profit opportunities even when these policies are in place to protect the environment. How Canada could have agreed to this in the first place is beyond me!

3) Eliminate NAFTA energy proportionality rule that requires Canada to export a locked-in percentage of our energy production and water to the U.S. even in times of drought.

The U.S. has not been exactly fair to deal with in the past. Consider soft-wood lumber. And now with Mr. Trump at the helm, we can expect about anything.

The consequences of Trump disruption are becoming clearer

by Glen Hodgson, Senior Fellow, Conference Board of Canada Donald Trump’s election agenda promised to challenge the existing U.S. political and economic order – that’s what his populist political base voted for. But while Mr. Trump promised to make America great again, there are inevitably unintended consequences to any disruptive change.

Nature abhors a vacuum and a response is emerging internationally.

We can already identify a variety of consequences, not all of them necessarily negative.

For Canada, the immediate consequence of Trump disruption is on trade – no surprise there. Trade policy is a top priority again, to maintain and even improve Canadian access

to the U.S. market, but also to diversify and deepen international trade and investment options.

The development of a Canadian position for the coming negotiations on the North American free-trade agreement has involved not just the federal government and its trade negotiators, but the private sector, provinces, think tanks and other informed stakeholders.

There could also potentially be a disruption in national security, although the professionalism of the U.S. and Canadian military and a long history of close collaboration are an important brake.

There has been a clear decline in U.S. engagement in recent meetings of the Group of 20, Group of Seven and NATO, and in other international

forums. Forming an international consensus on big issues is seldom easy, but Mr. Trump’s presence at the recent G20 meeting frustrated a consensus on the importance of free trade and on climate change policy.

It is rare that official communiqués from these events highlight the differences among participants, but that may become the norm in the Trump era.

Meanwhile, Japan, Canada and others continue to discuss a transPacific free-trade area, without the United States.

(Hopefully, any agreement would contain an accession clause for future candidates that meet the requisite membership conditions.).

As negotiations between the European Union and

the United States go nowhere, the EU and Japan have announced their intention to conclude a bilateral free-trade agreement in 2017.

China is eager to lead on free trade and public-infrastructure investment in Asia, which will slowly marginalize the impact of the United States in the region.

Mr. Trump’s international pullback has created room for others to step up. Angela Merkel, the undisputed political leader in Europe, has taken note of Mr. Trump’s shortcomings – such as his uncritical view of Russia. She has made it clear Europe can no longer automatically rely on the United States.

With the election of a reform-minded centrist government, France

China is also pushing for an expanded geopolitical role, although it does not yet seem inclined to step fully into U.S. shoes in international economic organizations.

At home, the U.S. political system itself is being tested. The Trump administration has failed to build consensus on big policy issues such as health care and tax reform, even within the Republican Party.

Major legislative reforms appear to be increasingly unlikely, and there are considerable limits to governing by executive order and through changes to regulations.

Congress is not taking seriously the

flawed budget and fiscal framework proposed by the Trump administration, which could add as much as $10-trillion (U.S.) to public debt over the next decades.

As The Economist magazine recently highlighted, the gap in values, incomes and economic opportunities in the United States is being reinforced and widened by the Trump agenda.

Into this U.S. vacuum, there are some positive developments. U.S. states, cities and the private sector are more actively engaged on major issues, such as the funding and delivery of health care, as well as climate change policy.

Ironically, by withdrawing the U.S. federal government from the Paris climate-change accord, Mr. Trump may have acceler-

ated other political and economic actors toward a lower-carbon economy.

Some geopolitical analysts are now musing about the end of American global hegemony.

In our view, it’s too early to say whether the Trump effect will be a four-year blip, or a structural change in global leadership.

The disruption being sown by Mr. Trump provides an incentive for Canada to step out of the U.S. shadow and define a more diversified economic and political path. Canada can be an active partner with other global leaders committed to advancing an open international economic and political agenda, while still looking to work with the United States on practical issues.

Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland’s recent speech to Parliament articulated a new, wider vision for Canada’s international relations and attracted considerable public attention.

Canadians in general and Parliament in particular must now be prepared to resource this new vision properly, and implement it fully. Beyond the coming NAFTA negotiations, are we ready to devote more scarce fiscal resources to items such as military capacity, international trade diversification, immigration and refugees, and targeted foreign assistance?

The answer to those questions will provide Canada’s concrete response to the Trump disruption.

Beetles light up the sky during the summer

RCMP issue warrant for meth dealer Biggar RCMP have issued an arrest warrant for 29 year old Alex Lounsbury of Saskatoon.

Lounsbury is wanted for breaching conditions of his Conditional Sentence, specifically to not be in the Rural Municipality of Biggar.

Lounsbury pled guilty to Possession of Methamphetamine for the Purpose of Trafficking, in North Battleford Provincial Court, April 11.

Lounsbury was stopped

by RCMP on Highway 14

east of Biggar on March 9, a small quantity of cannabis, along with drug paraphernalia and a small quantity of crystal meth were located by Biggar RCMP and seized.

He was arrested and on remand since the vehicle stop.

At the time, Lounsbury received an eight month concurrent Conditional Sentence Order with several conditions. One of those conditions is that he can not be in the Big-

gar RCMP jurisdiction.

That jurisdiction includes the RM’s of Biggar, Perdue, Eagle Creek, Glenside and Rosemount, the Village of Perdue, and the Town of Biggar.

RCMP say Lounsbury may be in the City of Saskatoon.

Some fireflies can synchronize their flashes.

On the OFA website there is a video of fireflies taken in the Great Smoky Mountains.

Fireflies control the flashing by adding oxygen which starts the chemical reaction in the light-producing organ in their tails.

Fireflies can help save lives. The chemical, luciferase, is used in detecting blood clots and can track the efficacy of cancer medications.

Fireflies have short life spans. They live only one season.

Next time you are out on a summer evening sit back and enjoy the light show put on by these insects.

Having sent a bit about

baseball (pretty good at alliteration, eh?), into The Independent years ago, Y.T. has to watch this closely and se that he doesn’t repeat himself!

Fun or fame Those “Hole in the Bat” jokes are all passé anyway! Even a cheeckful of “Bull Durham” doesn’t make a fellow a ballteam man anymore!

To Y.T. playing the game of baseball isn’t as much fun as it used to be either! When we were just kids, we just played for fun - and we had fun! It was never our ambition to be great ballplayers, but times have changed and our youthful enjoyments of games have changed with them!

A while back we got a kind of e-mail story about Michael Gartner’s parents, and their long lives together!

Quote: “My father never drove and when his wife parked he wanted her to leave the car going so that he could listen to the Cubs game on the radio.

“In the evening when I dropped by he would explain it all: ‘The Cubs lost again. The millionaire at second base made a bad throw to the millionaire at first base and the multi-millionaire in third base scored!’ ” To Yours Truly it seems that “Big Money” has spoiled the “Big fun” of many games!

Far from being a millionaire, Y.T. is going to write a rundown of the mistakes we made (and enjoyed) in the moneyless 1930s.

So John (What’s his name?) hit a slow grounder right back to the pitcher, who took a couple of steps and tossed it underhand to

the first baseman. The first baseman, nonchalantly reached out and batted the ball with his brandnew mitt, halfway down to the catcher. By the time the catcher finally fielded the ball, John (What’s his name again?) was on his way to second base! The catcher, in his excitement, overthrew second base by 10 feet, and by the time the catcher fielder retrieved the ball and overthrew the third base, John (What’s his name?) walked home.

John (What’s his name!) had scored a home-run on a ball that wasn’t even a hit!

No wonder their coach said his team needed life! But their manager thought that 30 years was enough!

We all laughed!

All this happened when two “pickup” teams met on a “made-up” ball diamond of a small Saskatchewan town that isn’t there any more! Mebbe if millionaire Mickey Owen reads this, it will make him feel good again, eh?

I suppose a fellow should write here a record of our own, homegrown, great plays. But

sure remember Chester!

Chester never dropped a flyball, baubled a grounder or knocked a “home-run” during all the years that Y.T. knew him, namely because he never played ball! But he had a new glove that his folks had given him when he “passed” Grade 8!

Chester always practiced with us, and showed that glove off to everybody!

One sports day, he (and his glove!) were sitting just inside one of the small gates in the backstop when a fellow got up to bat.

“Hit the ball!” yells Chester, “Maybe you’ll get your name in the local rag!”

The Umpire, who also just happened to be the

ber many of the poorest baseball plays (he made quite a few himself!) can be forgiven though. He always thought that the “game” was played for fun! Not to “win” like Ty Cobb, or for money!

But then I suppose that “money” and winning are what counts now, eh?

Later on, when there were a few pretty girls, sitting along the sideline fence watching, it occurred to us young fellows that “looking good” in our new uniforms was what counted! And handling the ball, like professionals (in front of those pretty girls!), was what really mattered most!

What we, once we got on the Diamond and the Ump hollered “Play Ball”, good or bad, has been forgotten long ago!

I forget the name of the guy who hit a basesloaded home-run to win the “World Series”, but I

editor of the local paper, hollered “Time!” and strode over to where Chester was sitting.

“Out,” he yelled. “Get off of this ball diamond or the “local rag” might mop you up and throw you away!”

Chester retreated, and as far as Y.T. can remember, none of us ever saw him at a ball gamed again!

None of our old pick-up team members ever got to be millionaires, as a matter of fact, we never made much money at anything! But we did have fun in those days and we did learn to accept after fellows mistakes.

Much as Rudyard Kipling sez: “And make allowance for their doubting too!”

I suppose a fellow should write a few pages about the “bad” things that happened, playing ball: like catching without a mask on, or spraining an ankle sliding into third. But we miss those sports days and comradeship that most of us found there!

But... if the boy at third had tagged his base, thrown second and first, he would have made a triple play! The coach just smiled!

We live in a world where attacks on religious communities are increasing. Recent news stories indicate that even here in Canada, we are not immune.

In the face of this, I find it absurd that the government is attempting to remove a key part of the legal framework which protects the religious freedoms of Canadians. Canadians must be free to practice their religion without fear of recrimination, violence or disturbance. The removal of these added protections would set a dangerous precedent. The government must not weaken the protections of this fundamental freedom.

I will continue to stand up for the rights of my constituents and all Canadians to practice their religion without fear of recrimination, violence, or disturbance.

The carts are being pulled by oxen, cows, horses, and mules - anything that could pull! Working their way single file up the hills at Eagle Creek, down into the creek bed, up to the top again, across ravines, around boulders, the Metis traders would be hollering at the beasts of burden, whips could be cracking, creatures bellowing. It is 1883.

The Red River cart, a Metis invention, has two large wheels, best to cope with the rough land, waters and sand they must roll over or through.

The wagon had “greaseless axles screaming in anguish”*. The travellers could be heard for miles!

Frenchie Bernier could hear these wagons coming long before they arrived at his place, “The Sixty Mile Bush Outpost”. The carts and their loads came up from Swift Current on

their way to Battleford.

The trail they used was called the Swift CurrentBattleford Trail. Well, not very imaginative and yet, everyone knew where they were going or where they had been.

Frenchie had been approached by the North West Mounted Police to create an outpost for them to rest their horses as they policed the trail.

Soon, settlers were bringing their worldly goods up that trail, searching for their quarter section of land. Frenchie built up his stopping over place over the years, building a barn, church and store.

By 1905, the railway was built through the village of Biggar, and the trail was no longer used. Not much is left of Frenchie’s place, but there is a rock cairn with a plaque on it. One can find it past the parking space at Argo Bush. The road is rough, take care.

The Swift-Battleford Trail was used by thousands. The Metis, homesteaders, stage coaches,

police and the military used this route to open up the Northwest Territories later to be called Saskatchewan. Now, crops cover a large portion of the old trail, but, remarkably, in some places, the furrows left by the carts can still be seen, over a hundred years later!

Hugh Henry, from the Saskatchewan History and Folklore Society, and friends of his will be walking that trail in August. Yep, he walking it, just like our ancestors did over a hundred years ago. He is inviting anyone who wants to join him, anywhere along the trail, or just for a portion of it. He’ll be overnighting near Biggar on August 15 and will be at the Biggar Museum and Gallery. He comes with a history of the trail and presentation.

New Horizons Activities

by Chasity Braitenbach The month of July was fairly quiet with the only exception being the Mystery Tour on July 29.

The tour made stops at the Fred Light Museum in Battleford and then stopped for lunch at the Kihiw Restaurant in Gold Eagle Casino in North Battleford, then moved

on to the Doukhobor Dugout house in Blaine Lake, and ended the tour at the Berry Barn in Saskatoon for supper.

We had bingo on July 13 with our half-n-half winners being Pat Turner and Ruby Gamble and the blackout winner was also Ruby Gamble. On July 27 the winner of both the

half-n-half and the blackout games was Linda Silbernagel.

Our monthly birthday potluck on July 10 had an attendance of 26 people.

Happy belated birthday to all of our July members!

Genetic diversity just as important in Agriculture world

by Calvin Daniels Regular readers will be aware I am a strong proponent of any effort made to protect rare livestock breed genetics.

We have a tendency in the livestock sector to reduce the genetic base down to an ever narrower base. The thinking has merit in terms of marketing to be sure.

As the genetic base narrows it stands to reason the animals hitting market are more generally alike.

The more alike the animals are the more they will respond in a similar

fashion to a set feeding regime, the more they can be handled on a production line in a similar fashion, and the more consistent the product should be hitting the consumer table.

If we look at the chicken business the vast majority of frying birds going to market are so genetically similar one might lean toward suggesting they are carbon copies.

But the model relies on the premise things will not change, and we must recognize change is constant, but hardly

predictable.

But if the change were to come, will the genetics remain for producers to adapt?

That is the value of maintain the dozens of livestock breeds which have been part of agriculture in a more significant way in the past, but are frankly considered obsolete by the farm sector today.

While rare grains can be protected by the saving of seeds stored correctly, it’s not quite so easy with livestock. So when numbers get to the point of being considered endangered steps need to be taken.

There are organizations such as Rare Breeds

Canada monitoring livestock breeds, classifying them first at risk, then vulnerable, endangered and finally critical, but it takes a lot of effort to maintain the breeds on the list. There are some 50 breeds on the critical list of the organization including breeds originating in this country, Lacombe hogs, Outaouais Arcott sheep and the Newfoundland pony.

But the good news, there is a recently developed technology which may well be a new tool in protecting such breeds, a good news story which will be covered in next week’s column.

If you are traveling around rural Saskatchewan, it is a great time to spot a Burrowing Owl. However, vehicles can be dangerous for the young and inexperienced owls.

Kaytlyn Burrows, Habitat Stewardship Coordinator at Nature Saskatchewan explains that “at dusk the road surface tends to be warmer than surrounding grasslands, attracting many small insects and rodents and as a result, young owls are also attracted to the road and ditch when they begin searching for prey”.

The Burrowing Owl population has been steadily declining, making the survival of each and every owl critical for the ultimate survival and growth of the endangered population.

Motorists this summer can reduce the risk of owl-vehicle collisions by slowing down near known or potential nest sites and keeping an eye out for low-flying owls.

Doing this will not only help Burrowing Owls to survive, but may also increase your chances of spotting this endangered bird! A few key features to remember when identifying a Burrowing Owl are their mottled

brown and white feathers, white ‘eyebrows’, and long featherless legs that look like ‘stilts’. Don’t be fooled by its small size – it is only nine inches tall (about the size of a Meadowlark).

Nature Saskatchewan has been involved with the protection and conservation of the Burrowing Owl for 30 years, but its success would not have been possible without the help of landowners, land managers, and the public. Operation Burrowing Owl works with landowners across southern and central Saskatch-

ewan, and uses voluntary agreements in an effort to preserve the rapidly disappearing habitat that the species needs. The program works alongside landowner practices, and the land continues to be used in a way that benefits the landowner.

Smoak a rare bright light for Jays This has been a forgettable season for the Toronto Blue Jays but one bright light has emerged: Justin Smoak.

Pencilled in during the pre-season as a journeyman player among stars such as Josh Donaldson, Troy Tulowitzki and Jose Bautista on a team many believed had a chance to contend in the American League East, Smoak has emerged as the team’s undisputed most valuable player during a terrible season.

A 6-foot-4, 220-pound first baseman acquired following the 2014 season from the Seattle Mariners, Smoak has led the team in home runs and other slugging stats while earning all-star status for the first time in his career. By the end of July, he was on pace for 44 home runs, a total which won’t make Jays’ fans forget the likes of Carlos Delgado, George Bell, Jesse Barfield or Bautista (who holds the team record of 54 homers in a season), but a decent number just the same.

5 tips to prepare for back to school, post-secondary-style

by News Canada Whether it is you or your kids just starting school or returning to college or university, here are five helpful tips that mentally and physically prepare post-secondary students for the year ahead.

1.) Practice a sleep routine. Give yourself enough time to relax before going to bed, turning off all those bright distractions to get enough undisturbed sleep. Making this a routine before and during the school year can have a positive impact on your health and overall productivity. Rather than

starting the night before, begin this routine some weeks before the first day to help you avoid frustration.

2.) Prepare meals ahead of time. Making nutritious meals a day or two before school can free up a lot of time elsewhere in your schedule.

3.) Pack your backpack the day before. Organizing your backpack, the day before with what you’ll need for school the next day is important. It is much better to realize that you cannot find something a day or two early than scrambling

that morning when you’re already running late.

4.) Practice going to school. Map out a route you’d like to take and — whether you’re walking, driving or taking public transit — try that route out during the same time of day when you would leave to go to school.

5.) Talk with someone with experience. Speak with an alumnus or current student who enjoyed the program or institution you’re enrolled in.

Having a positive outlook on your school career can have spillover benefits for your education.

Howard was born September 20, 1957 in Biggar, Sask. to Bill and Katharine Porter.

He was raised on the family farm in the Porter district south of Landis, Sask.

Howard attended school in Landis.

He had many good memories of growing up on the family farm.

He was the ninth child in our family. Howard was very thrifty, thoughtful, reliable, creative and honest person. He could build or fix anything. Any spare time he would be back at the farm helping out.

He spent countless hours in the shop building and fixing things. He loved the outdoors hunting, skidooing and being at his cabin. Howard enjoyed music, spending time with family and friends, his two dogs and cooking shows.

Howard moved to Edmonton. Alta. in 1975 and worked various jobs. In 1977 he went to work for Procor and continued to work there until his health no longer permitted.

In 1980, Howard married Sonya Clinton. They raised two children, Cory and Leanne. Howard was a 1982 cancer survivor. He never let his health issues get in the way of enjoying his life and family. He always had a positive attitude never complaining. He made one last trip to Porter School to our family reunion two weeks before he passed away. It was his wish to come back to the reunion. That took great strength and unselfishness on his part. Howard could always be seen wearing his plaid flannel jacket no matter what the occasion. He fought a very brave and courageous battle with his illness. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

Howard is survived by his loving wife, Connie Holoien his children, Cory (Amy) Porter, Leanne (Steven) St. Louis; three grandchildren, Morgan, Brandon and Addision; siblings, Jim (Grace), Helen (John) Zagoruy, Dan (Wendy), Shirley (Al) Strayer, Clint (Janet), Gary (Susan), Eileen (Barry) McCagherty, Lawrence (Linda), Brenda (Allen) Halter, Wanda (Greg) Pek; as well as numerous relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his first wife, Sonya; his parents, Bill and Katharine; sister, Evelyn Ayotte, as well as relatives an friends.

A Private Celebration of Life was held on July 22, 2017 in St. Albert, Alta.

Springwater July 1st 2017 - Canada Day - The 150th birthday celebration

An enthusiastic 150 celebrants registered at the Town Hall in the Village of Springwater to honour

and celebrate the 150th birthday of Canada July 1. Another 30 fireworks enthusiast arrived at dusk to watch the sky light up impressively with a salute to our country’s 150 year history.

Planning started last fall with a special (approved) application to the Government of Canada 150 for funding to expand celebrations with specific invitations to communities surrounding Springwater. The area responded with an increase from 59 who celebrated Canada Day in 2016 - to 150 who registered for dinner, the afternoon live outdoor music family fun games

Previous residents Gordy and Yvonne Bulger of Codette, (near Nipawin), Roy and Wilma Fielden, Outlook, Arlo and Judy Fielden, Regina, Leslie Johnson, Unity, Matt Atkinson, Taylor (Hanna) and eight month old Harrison Atkinson, Grande Prairie Alberta, Vivienne and son Kelly Kalmer, Kindersley.

There were a great many Biggar residents; Marge Mackie, Myrtle Robinson, Morley and Eleanor Reis

and the Canada Day official program ending with the grand finale fireworks display.

The visitors: Out of area visitors were Vadim and Ira Vehera from Ukraine cousins visiting Ann Muc. The Muc family heritage is representative of so many hard working contributing Canadians. Ann taught school in Springwater, 1962/63 and Ruthilda 1961/62. The family

Sylvia Thompson and Ann Muc were special honoured senior guests.

The surrounding areas of Ruthilda, Kelfield, Landis and Duperow, all contributed to make Canada’s 150th birthday a very special event.

The Games: Family games started at 2:00 with the unique three-hole Cur-Olf tournament, other games included Yardzee innovated by Sandie Brown

and her family, an outdoor version of Yahtze, the popular Roughrider version of “bean bag football’, croquet and the challenging string golf ball toss were great venues to have fun and visit with other friendly competitors at the celebration.

Notable Cur-Olf awards: Vadim Vehera from Ukraine travelled the farthest. The John Brown/ Bridges families - most family participation. Most lost golf balls - Samantha Bridges (Savvy blew the whistle on her mother).

The low score for the

dogs, buns, Canada Day cake, soft drinks, coffee, napkins, plates, and condiments. The cost was recovered by “donations” at the door. The generosity of the approximate 150 celebrants signed in at the hall, will help fund the hall and another year’s celebration.

The quality and quantity of the food was very good.

Our July 1 celebrations rely on posters asking for “pot luck donations of salads and desserts” - in addition phone calls by Jackie Chanin and Barb Bullock were made to local attendees registered in the previous year.

The self-appointed “volunteer” kitchen staff and servers just pitch in, making sure things ran smoothly with humour and efficiency. Among many others Louise Hawkins and Cindy Thomson did a great job of organization and quality control, Dave Bullock kept the coffee makers going and did his usual essential jobs, Arlen Muc

registration desk, sales and hall presentation of historical pictures and write ups.

Finally: Cheryl and Neal Houdek surprised everyone with a cooler full of popsicles, and ice cream bars to treat everyone listening to music after the meal. They made the celebrants, particularly the very young and not so young - very happy on a hot day.

The Music: Musicians made the day!

They increased enjoyment and lifted everyone’s spirits.

Canada Day was blessed with these talented volunteer musicians. The first group “Highway 31” with Ian McLeod (Ruthilda) guitar and vocals, Cal Campbell bass guitar (Dodsland), Glen Julseth guitar and vocals, Joan Julseth keyboards and vocals (Haford). The second group “Buck-5.80” Ian McLeod (a linchpin in both groups) - guitar and vocals, - Bob Dyck

(Biggar) drums, -Tim Heese lead guitar and Kyle Heese (Kindersley) guitar and sound control. These fine musicians alternated and then came together for a final

“Jam” session to get the celebrants dancing on the grass and singing to their favourite tunes.

The Program: The Canada day program Master of Ceremonies Ron Hawkins acknowledged contributions to Canada Day 150 celebrations. He particularly recognized the community women, and men, who volunteered to cook, organize, provide and serve the amazing potluck meal. This was a traditional example of Canadian generosity, cooperation and spirit. Our MC recognized the volunteer music, and all those who did the necessary preparation, accounting of funds and the essential cleanup of the hall and venues. We were left with the great philosophical thought that “If everyone does a little a lot gets done.”

The singing of O Canada: The traditional program was topped off with the inspired singing of O Canada - led by our talented Master of ceremonies, Ron Hawkins and five eager young enthusiastic Canadian children singers.

The day finished at dusk with an impressive fireworks display.

Thanks to everyone; this small part of Saskatchewan did it all, rural people from the surrounding area, villages and towns, local business’s, distant visitors, the Government

of Canada, and corporate generosity, everyone was included and contributed to Canada 150 birthday party in Springwater July 1, 2017.

Cut your airport screening time before leaving home

by News Canada Travelling in the summer, the busiest time of year at Canada’s airports, can mean longer lines. Here are some tips to speed things up before you even leave for the airport recommended by the experts at the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority.

Dress for screening success. Avoid wearing large metallic accessories, such as heavy jewelry, big belt buckles and shoes with metal pieces that will set off the metal detector.

Pack for security.

Place small electronics in your carry-on and leave them there for screening. Only large items like laptops and game consoles need to be taken out and placed in bins.

If you’re packing liq-

uids, aerosols or gels in your carry-on, make sure they’re in quantities of 100 millilitres or less and are placed together in a clear, resealable one litre plastic bag. Medications, as well as liquids for children under two years of age (such as milk and juice), are exempt from this rule, but any other liquids exceeding the limit must be packed

in checked baggage.

Arrive early. This is especially important during busy periods, like summer and the holidays.

Giving yourself plenty of time to get through security will reduce stress and allow you time to enjoy the airport amenities.
