Okay, not so long ago and not so far, far away. Rather last Tuesday and at the Lionel A. Jones Library, the kids of the Biggar Day Camp were taking in a Star Wars theme afternoon, celebrating everything Yoda, Chewbacca, Luke and Rey, R2-D2 and BB-8, crafting up some art, working with Lego, puzzles, finding their Star Wars name, and books, books, books. The kids took a journey of the imagination with the popular tale of good versus evil, lightsabers and blasters, the force, and adventure.

Nationals claim U-16 provincial title The Biggar Nationals U-16 softball squad goes into this weekend’s Western Canadian Softball Championships as hosts sporting a provincial gold.

The U-16 Biggar squad claimed the top spot this past July 5-7 in Regina.

Having posted a 14-5 regular season record, the Nats started their Provincial quest a tad slow with losses to the South East Supernovas (5-2) and to the Unity Panthers (12-9).

Rallying, the girls turned what coach Dion Harrabek called a bad case of nerves, roaring back with a 10-2 win over the Tisdale Riverdogs in their final round robin. In the semi’s, they once more met the Supernovas, this time taking a 6-3 win to enter the finals against Unity.

With the Unity Panthers tying run on third, the Nats pitching won the day, retiring the Panthers and securing gold for Biggar.

Being selected last year for the Western Canadian Softball Championships gained the Nats an automatic berth in the tourney. The provincial win, however, proves the girls belong, making them the team to beat.

Things begin Friday at 8 a.m. with Biggar hosting Manitoba, their second game at 1 p.m. and third of the day at 5 p.m.

Opening Ceremonies are scheduled for 12:15 p.m., with a championship banquet at 7 p.m.

Saturday, Biggar plays at 12 p.m. and 4 p.m., and Sunday at 9 a.m.

Championship finals follow.

Johnson wins SHSAA Coaching Award

Mr. J as he is affectionately known, is a coach who cares about his

students and works with them to develop their skills and character. He instils a love of physical activity and is the BCS athlete’s biggest booster.

He has put in hundreds of hours each year into extracurricular programs and BCS’s athletic program, so the award is

long-overdue praise for his hard work and integrity.

Every year, the SHSAA recognizes one coach from each district for their dedication to sport in their community and district.

Congratulations Will!

“The benefit concert showed overwhelming support for those ranchers affected by the Argo Wildfire in April. It really reflected that Saskatchewan spirit where we lend a hand to neighbours in need,” stated SSGA President Bill Huber. “We know the funds won’t replace everything that was lost, but it can go a long way to helping them recover.”

“SSGA extends its appreciation to all those who attended the benefit and purchased auction items from the live and silent auctions,” Huber added. SSGA also thanks the Biggar and area community for hosting the event as well as all the volunteers for helping to make this benefit concert a success.

“We would like to thank all of our sponsors and the donors of items for the live and silent auctions. We are grateful for your support to put on this level of event,” Huber said.

“SWF (Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation) is proud to have sponsored this outstanding

event,” stated Clark Schultz, president of the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation (SWF), which sponsored the Chris Henderson performance for the benefit. “We recognize the ag community as stewards of the land, providing wildlife populations, including species at risk, with the necessary habitat to thrive.”

A number of dignitaries also attended the benefit, including Kelly Block, MP for Carlton

Trail-Eagle Creek, Randy Weekes, MLA BiggarSask Valley, JeanneMarie de Moissac, Reeve of the RM of Biggar and Biggar Mayor Ray Sadler.

The Argo fire in midApril burned over 22,000 acres of pastures and damaged over 75 miles of fence. Producers face significant costs rebuilding fencing and finding alternative grazing.

Support your local tourism Ah summer!

So much to do in so little time. For most families this is the time when holidays start and vacations are taken.

There are many choices but sometimes we overlook the options that are available right in our own backyard.

Take, for example. the steam train at Stettler.

An enjoyable afternoon with a really good supper and entertainment.

Similarily, there are many choices to be made in the local area that are passed by. It’s just human nature to look further afield when planning vacations and yet local options can be just as entertaining.

It is perhaps short sighted of our tourism agencies to fail to market to the local population. The thinking is that it is necessary to bring in visitors from afar. Not so. Encouraging local people to visit nearby attractions can garner just as much revenue.

This year, check out some of the attractions in the area -- you might be pleasantly surprised.

Steam train takes you back to another time and place All Aboard!

The conductor welcomed us aboard the train as we left the station at Stettler and headed off on our adventure.

It all started during a conversation with my husband’s brother one day last November. We had just attended a performance at Rosebud and enjoyed the weekend so we were discussing our next adventure.

“How about the train ride at Stettler?”

One day in early April, I visited the website to see when the excursions started and found this year’s schedule had just been posted. We decided on a date, which included rock and roll music, phoned the other brother

and made a date. Thus, in mid-June we each left our respective towns and made the trek to Stettler.

Alberta Prairie Railway Excursions promises an exciting day on board a real steam or dieselpowered train. The train leaves the station in Stettler, travels through Alberta’s parkland to the final destination in Big Valley. You’ll see grain fields, pastures, lots of wildlife and oil and gas operations. Arriving in Big Valley guests are treated to a very delicious meal of prime rib and the trimmings.

Before reaching Big Valley a traumatic event happens.

In 2007 Alberta Prairie purchased her from Rail America, upgraded and restored her in 2008 and today she pulls both passenger and freight trains during the week.

The train ride takes you back in time. The staff, dressed in period costume, put you in the spirit. The on board entertainment has you tapping your toes to country music and at the same time having a few laughs. Along the way, the announcer points out some historical sites and tells the tale of train lore such as why the train whistles at crossings, the type of rail tracks, the background of the engine, mile boards and

their significance.

History is a big part of the day. Again the announcer will tell the tale of Big Valley and how it was once a prosperous coal town. The years have not been kind to the town and now the population has dwindled.

However, the supper served at the hall and the businesses that stayed open late shows the entrepreneurship needed to keep the community alive.

The brochure says, “You will meet smalltown and country people with the warm-hearted, hardworking spirit of their pioneer forebears.”

We certainly did.

Horses are people too, eh?

My horse and I slept out last night.

The hills one solid silhouette, Here, hesitating as I write.

I think I can remember yet.

The hush of night across the land, The gentle hooves upon the sod; At peace we curled in nature’s hand.

No, really in the land of God! Created, as the rest of these, Last night, beside my dying blaze.

Yours Truly must be getting old and forgetful because it seems to him that he used the above verse in this column not too long ago. Not to worry though he is in touch with the man who wrote it, and we’ll just call it a rerun of a 1938 incident.

It wouldn’t be fair to mention names though, because as that fellow on TV said: “Horses are people too.” An old saying goes: “A man’s a man for a’that.” And a horse . . . well, you know what I mean.

Back to the subject, eh?

I think a lot of people knew that horse long before we did. As far as we ever found out, he had been raised on the Valley Spring Ranch east of Borden, Saskatchewan along the river. And when one of their riders helped us move our herd across the frozen river (in 1936) he just sold one of my brothers (Bill) everything and went back to Borden on the train. Whew . . . I am going to continue . . .

Working with nature has a future in farming Agriculture has changed significantly though the decades.

Today growing crops is a business where the majority of producers look to maximize their production.

There is some solid reasoning to that goal.

Even if you are only making a few cents a bushel profit, the more bushels grown mean more gross dollars generated.

Gross dollars look good in the books.

Of course if you start to lose money on a bushel of grain, then the more bushels can also lead to greater losses.

It’s something of a fine line for producers because maximized production does not normally come without a significant investment in the crop.

That investment includes equipment,

labour, fuel, seed and to get the really large yields generally lots of fertilizer and a range of crop protection products, herbicides, fungicides and pesticides.

Of course not all producers are tied to increasing input investment as a way to making their farm units more profitable.

There are producers Calvin Daniels who are trying to work more in concert with Mother Nature to produce a crop, reducing costs in the process.

Their thinking is simple enough, if you can work with the natural cycles of the soil, mimicking as much as possible the way nature does things, you can reduce the reliance on purchased fertilizer, and fungicides and pesticides.

Agriculture

If you are not having to pay out big dollars for inputs, the risk taken on in a crop year is reduced.

It doesn’t mean you don’t hurt when a crop fails for some reason, but there is not a huge input bill that still has to be paid.

The thinking is something Bangor, SK.-area farmer Garry Richards who is focusing on what he terms regenerative agriculture.

Richards isn’t 100 per cent opposed to use herbicides, or tillage, in a pinch to control weeds, but he doesn’t turn to those options until he has tried a range of other more natural processes, those that are more intune with the process that occur in the soil and its ecosystem.

Is trying to work with nature the future of farming?

It is likely closer to what farmers did before herbicides and manufactured fertilizers came into vogue.

That does not mean the farm sector will return to that style farming en masse.

It does however suggest

it is a system that can work for some producers, and is likely worth a look by producers

seeking to reduce their risks and still keep a reasonable net income.

At the very least a more

nature-based approach would seem worth taking a closer look at.

If you have ever attended one of my cooking classes or cooking shows, you1 know that I am a big advocate for using fat in cooking. Asquith council news Asquith Town Council held its July regular council meeting on July 10.

Attending were Deputy-Mayor Sue Sawicki, Councillors Dylan Claypool, Harold Edwards, Jordan Claypool, Ted Goodnough and Jeff Eide. Also attending was CAO Kathy Picketts and

Foreman Darren Kraft.

The meeting was called to order at 6:59 p.m.

A resolution was made to amend the council minutes from the June 12 regular council meeting and further that the minutes be accepted as amended.

Accounts paid in the amount of $62,301.27 and accounts payable of $30,646.56 were accepted as presented.

Please keep watch for a Little Free Library which will be implemented outside the Town Office.

John Sundquist, on behalf of Nutrien, attended the meeting and spoke on community investment and fundingfor small communities.

Spring brings out a joy for everyone to be out and about, enjoying the weather. This includes dog owners who are out walking their dogs. The Town of Asquith would like to again remind all dog owners that dog feces must be picked up when out walking your dogs. Please be considerate of others when walking your dog and pick up feces. Keep watch for advertising of the grand opening of the Asquith Dog Park. It is currently open for all residents to utilize, please check it out.
