Strong job growth heading into 2019 Saskatchewan saw strong job gains for the fifth consecutive month in December.

Year-over-year employment increased by 10,900 jobs from December 2017. Saskatchewan’s growth rate of 1.9 per cent ranked second among the provinces.

The job gains were driven entirely by fulltime employment with an increase of 13,300 full-time jobs. Major year-over-year gains came from the province’s agriculture sector. From 2007 to 2018, Saskatchewan had the third highest employment growth rate among the provinces at 12.9 per cent.

“For the fifth month in a row Saskatchewan has seen strong job gains,” Immigration and Career Training Minister Jeremy Harrison said. “Our economy continues to see steady growth despite the

economic headwinds that we are currently facing.

It is encouraging to see significant job growth in full-time employment.

We will continue to stand up for our province’s economy and resource sector as we head into 2019.”

The seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate was 5.6 per cent, down from 6.5 per cent a year ago and on par with the national average.

Other December highlights include: • Major year-over-year gains were reported for agriculture up 5,000 jobs; educational services up 3,900 jobs; health care and social assistance up 3,700 jobs.

• Female employment up 4,200 jobs (+1.6 per cent) and male employment up 6,800 jobs (+2.3 per cent) compared to last December.

Sask. grows in third quarter of 2018 Saskatchewan’s population continued to grow in the third quarter of 2018.

According to the latest population estimates released by Statistics Canada, Saskatchewan grew by 3,841 to 1,165,903 people as of October 1.

This represents the 50th consecutive quarter of population growth - the longest sustained period of population growth in Saskatchewan since quarterly records started being kept in 1971.

“Despite the challenges facing our energy sector, people still see

Saskatchewan as a great place to live, and they’re right,” Trade and Export Development Minister Jeremy Harrison said. “Our government will continue working hard to stand up for Saskatchewan and ensure it’s a great place to live, work and raise a family.”

Saskatchewan’s population growth in the most recent quarter was driven by net international migration of 5,261 and a natural increase (births minus deaths) of 1,762, partially offset by net interprovincial migration of 3,182.

Big business gives a lot of money to charities It is the beginning of 2019 but there is still a lot of discontent left over from 2018.

The yellow vest protest movement may have started in France but it has quickly made its way to Canada -- at least Western Canada.

One of the stories CBC covered before the Christmas break featured a picture of a large banner strung across the Albert Memorial Bridge on Albert Street in Regina. The caption on the banner read: “Trudeau and Goodale are the worst politicians in Canadian history.”

After reading a number of opinion pieces and letters to the editor in various publications it appears a growing number of Canadians agree. In fact one article went even farther and took exception to the whole “green” movement.

The author stated that when it comes to charitable giving it should be noted that the major oil companies, the likes of Shell, Imperial Oil, Esso as well as pipeline companies such as Enbridge are often major contributors to charities across the country.

Visibly absent from this list are those who would like to curb the industry.

Most notably the David Suzuki Foundation, Greenpeace and others do not contribute to charities, neither on a national, provincial or local level.

So, if these groups and their supporters succeed in shutting down a major industry, one that creates numerous jobs, who will support the charities that rely on funding from that sector?

It is something the politicians should give serious thought to, as without private sector giving, then it will be up to government to step up. The reality is that these groups will receive no funding and will close their doors leaving many recipients out in the cold.

Why Canadians should embrace the yellow jacket movement

by Lee Harding, Research Fellow for the Frontier Centre for Public Policy Some Canadians and French believe that their ‘leaders’ are mere followers of a supra-national agenda, not champions for their electorate “Canadians do not need to be liberated,” said Canadian Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson half a century ago, after French President Charles De Gaulle lit the fuse for Quebec independence with his famous “Vive la Quebec libre!” speech.

But neither of their current counterparts are standing for national freedom, let alone calling for it.

President Emmanuel Macron chose the anthem of the European Union when he became president, instead of that of the France he came to rule.

And Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has called Canada the world’s first “post-national state.”

Both leaders have become

United Nations servants, in lock-step with their carbon-taxing, migrantwelcoming agreements.

This has inspired 280,000 yellow-jacketed protesters in France. Canadian protesters have followed suit – and they have every reason to do so.

Consider carbon taxes.

In France, a tax is applied to each litre of fuel regardless of price. Since 2014, it has included a carbon tax.

From there, a 20 per cent value-added tax is applied to the overall price (including the consumption tax).

The Paris climate accord led to higher fuel taxes in France – especially on diesel, to equalize its price to that of gasoline. This year brought an increase of 7.6 cents per litre on diesel and 3.9 cents on gas. In cents per litre, these taxes were slated to rise another 6.5 and 2.9 respectively – an idea abandoned in an attempt to quell protests.

Canada is almost a carbon copy. Federal and provincial governments place

ne excise taxes on gasoline e and diesel at a fixed rate.

From here, the Goods and Services Tax is applied to the pump price, plus the excise taxes (yes, a tax on a tax), as do provincial taxes where harmonized. And as Canadians are all too aware, the federal government has mandated carbon taxes across the country, at $20 per tonne of carbon in 2019, increasing annually until $50 in 2022. This will tack 11 more cents on every litre of gas.

The closer one looks, the more the parallels.

French protesters complain that certain industries and big business are being exempted from carbon taxes. Canada has taken the same approach.

Starting in 2019, companies that produce 50 megatonnes of carbon dioxide a year were to face penalties, but only for the portion above 80 per cent of the average within their industry. This threshold is 90 per cent for companies operating in Canada that

Blue-collar workers and rural folks feel especially picked on by carbon taxes.

They complain that urban elites don’t care about their practical realities, such as the necessity of driving to work, or that the burden placed on them supposedly to stop climate change was making it hard to get by.

Saskatchewan has led the charge against Canadian carbon taxes for very similar reasons. The province has 40 per cent of Canada’s arable land, but only three per cent of its population, with many

listening to our concerns and look forward to a good working relationship together and further improvements to our working area there.

In Paris, yellow jacket protesters defied barriers around the Tomb of the Unknown soldier to sing the French national anthem. The 42 demands made by protesters include French withdrawal from the European Union and NATO. The EU mandated the acceptance of migrants, with results that do not sit well with many French.

Recently, France and Canada signed the United Nations Compact on Migration. Signatories agree to treat migrants, currently numbering 258 million, as well as their own citizens. The document even calls on nation-

al governments to withdraw support for media institutions that oppose this agenda by using noninclusive language.

Although carbon taxes and migrants have sparked some protests, mass demonstrations that include hundreds of thousands seem unlikely. Canadians tend to be more docile and have no historical precedent of putting their rulers in guillotines.

Besides, yellow jackets are far less copious in the Great White North. France passed a law in 2008 that requires every vehicle have one in the trunk – a piece of bureaucratic largesse that has gloriously backfired. Ottawa can be glad it never made such a regulation.

Unfortunately, when it comes to parallels with Paris, it has done everything else. And the protesters have started to make their presence felt in this country.

Soup tends to warm us up as well as satisfy the hunger. Most are served hot but sometimes you may see a cold soup.

There are many recipes for soups, in many cookbooks. However, I came across one cookbook on Pinterest that harkened back to days of yore. Eliza Smith’s The Compleat Housewife or Accomplished Gentlewoman’s Companion was a colonial cookbook. It was published in 1742 in Williamsburg, Virginia and contained several recipes for soups and bisques.

The Whole Truth I suppose a lot of readers will call me a prude for having scribbled an article like this, and they possibly wonder how come old Y.T. seems so dumb about the way things really are anymore!

Maybe they are right in thinking Yours Truly is way out of touch with reality, but although my opinions may seem warped to them, their opinions sure seem that way to me!

As we were growing up, many times our parents admonished us that “honesty� was the best policy to have, and moral-wise, it still is!. But the economy of today seems

to call for something a little different.

Y.T. doesn’t really want to mention things like this, but ever cantankerous and negative-minded he has put them on the list of “musts� to be addressed in this (ahem) treatise because far too often (according to him!) they aren’t mentioned at all!

It often appears to him that economy-wise, real down to earth honesty isn’t very important at all in our dealings anymore, and, at least to me, how many of our highly respected companies, on many occasions, turn to the opposite of honesty in order to claim the

quality of their wares!

Many actually owe their success to the almost unachievable actions of advertising: fruit talks, animals fly, vehicles wink and flowers smile...

I suppose much of this is meant to amuse many of us, but more importantly using another far-out form of dishonesty, are meant to influence our subconscious and get us to reach for our pocketbooks!

Most of us agree that although honesty may be the “best policy�, we also agree that the honest person is usually the one who finishing last.

Many important public figures have been accused of dishonesty, and always then swear, on the Book that they

are innocent, later to be proven guilty. But so what?of the world’s greatest scandals accrued in the ranks of our aristocracy, and yet society seems to condone their questionable actions until everything blows over, and Bob Mason they are reinstated again in our social setup as presidents, prime ministers, et cetera.

No wonder politicians often fail to find an answer to the problems of peasants! Even their good ideas are often shouted down and dismissed!

Looking back, Y.T. finds that all through history it has been this way!

It would take volumes and volumes of books to record even a small part of the inglorious maneuvers society has made in order to establish our democratic system, known for its “honesty� and “integrity�!

Looking back again, one cannot really blame the economists of the 1920’s who predicted a huge prosperous future for the 1930s. As it turned out, we had one of the worst depressions in history -but someone knew!

Surely some of the highly paid, influential, international economists of the time foresaw what

was about to happen!

Yet those bad years came and went -- and we’ve almost forgotten them too!

How do we know who to believe anymore? People have been known to swear on the Bible that the falsehoods they have uttered are true! Many (if not all) of the worlds religions expect everyone to tell the truth, making it easy for prevaricators to take advantage, until often the only way to experience it is to look within ourselves! And, it almost seems to me that, despite all the bluster about the “honesty� of our modern democratic setup, one has to be dishonest themselves in order to compete anymore!

A while ago Y.T. made up a list of questions he was going to ask when some political type came around. Mebbe Y.T. should know all the answers by now, but I feel that over the years, governments have made pretty sure that he doesn’t!

He has asked a few odd questions though and found out to his embarrassment that for all it’s available “expertise�, governments aren’t run as efficiently as his old farm was!

Sometimes it seems that “untruths� are part of our way of the out here anymore! Any past idea that society had about handshakes being binding, has gone down the drain, and even signatures are somewhat passe!

Big, often misunderstood conversations,

seemingly intended to clarify a subject, often do just the opposite, and believe me, that is exactly the way some politicians want it!

Many of histories greatest scandals, when finally brought out into the open for everyone to see, have been responsible for the defamation of some very important people. And we know that they have lied to us.

And yet as time passes, we forget!

Our modern truths are kind of dull, and honesty doesn’t pay that much so we switch on the TV and watch the animals talk...

It used to be that dishonesty was repaid by the flames of Hades (and stuff like that!) but now VIP’s get a paid-for suite in some secluded confinement setup, where their meals and entertainment are footed by the public. So who wants to be honest, eh?

Mebbe this whole “truth telling� myth of ours in wrong, eh? Mebbe we are supposed to suspect every thing we are told. I dunno! And also, I wonder what it would be like if everyone who reads this thing said “What a bunch of B.S!�

A hundred and some years ago Rudyard Kipling wrote: “If you can dream, and not make dreams your master.�

Yet often I think that they have! And long long before that another few lines from Exodus (20:16) were written: “Thou shalt not bear false witness...�

The comments are sure taking a beating, eh?

Being One with the Earth... new art show in the gallery 19012ax0

by Delta Fay Cruickshank for the Biggar Museum and Gallery The Biggar Museum and Gallery is pleased to announce a new art exhibit in the Credit Union Gallery in the museum.

In partnership with the Biggar and District Arts Culture and the Organization of Saskatchewan Arts Council (OSAC), this body of work by Lean Marie Dorion will be displayed for only a few

weeks.

Dorion’s paintings are rich in colour and texture, portraying Aboriginal and Metis women as “first teachers� and “givers of life�. “My artistic practice is a spiritual expression and a celebration of my mixed Cree and Metis heritage.

My art is themed around the healing and portrayal of Aboriginal women’s knowledge, teaching and

spirituality.�

Dorion is a professional Metis artist, filmmaker, writer and educator living in Prince Albert. Her work has shown nationally and internationally, is featured in numerous children’s books, and has won many awards and grants.

There is always something happening at the Biggar Museum and Gallery.

Future of sports is in good hands As we embark on a new year, sports fans across Canada and the United States will be looking forward to seeing most of the familiar stars — McDavid, Tiger, Brady and LeBron, among others — do what they do in such spectacular fashion.

But because it’s a ‘new’ year, it’s time to focus our gaze on some of the new stars that are emerging and will keep sports fans entertained long after the current roster of big names has retired.

For instance, pro golf has a guy named Cameron Champ, a 23-year-old Californian who burst on the scene last year and shad immediate success.

His claim to fame is prodigious length off the tee, but he complements that distance with deft touch around the greens and has ‘superstar’ written all over him.

He may not be the second coming of LeBron James, or Steph Curry, but Mississauga’s R.J.

Barrett will be a big name in the NBA probably by this time next year. He’s a freshman with the college powerhouse, Duke, and is projected to be the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft this spring. Barrett is next in a long line of Toronto-area stars — Jamal Murray of Denver, Tristan Thompson of Cleveland, Andrew Wiggins of Minnesota — who are putting Canada on the map as far as hoops development is concerned.

SALES AGRONOMIST Duperow Co-op is recruiting for the position of Sales Agronomist for the New Agro Centre location in Biggar.

This position will start out of the Duperow Coop office in Duperow, Saskatchewan and then transition to the new location in Biggar spring of 2019. We are seeking individuals who have a desire to provide high performance customer service and wishes to be part of a professional team with the same goals.

The primary role for this position will be to develop new sales and agronomy programs for the Duperow Co-operative member-owners as well as assist in the transition to the new agro site in Biggar. The successful candidate will be able to evolve and grow based on the needs for the association and its members.

This position will spend much of their time working closely with farm clients in providing a variety of farm related services and products. You will become the customers trusted advisor for their operations around our products and services including but not limited to Crop Protection, Agronomy, Seed, (including bulk seed), and Fertilizer.

The successful applicant will create and track customer farm cropping plans, client quotes, and work with the General Manager in managing inventory and inventory requirements.

Work with General Manager in developing and maintaining marketing programs as well as other duties as assigned.

Successful candidates will have agriculture sales and agronomy experience or a desire to exceed in the agriculture industry. You will also enjoy working with Farm Clients in many areas of their operation. Customer service skills and the ability to develop working relationships as part of a team are essential.

by Paula Shortt Mike Ferguson has been skating since he was three which is natural given that he comes from a family of skaters.

His brothers (one older and one younger) have both skated since early childhood and his dad was a skater too.

“We had a rink in the backyard so we were just out there playing hockey pretty much every night.

We did the power skating thing when we were young too.”

His father helped with coaching and his older brother played league, so Mike had some early hockey role models. Or maybe it was his competitive spirit and a little bit of sibling dynamics, “My older brother was playing so I just wanted

to play too.”

His biggest enjoyment from hockey comes from, “Just being with the team. It’s awesome, it’s fun!”

During the off-season, Mike plays a little threeon-three in the summer in Saskatoon sometimes, but he mostly occupies himself with playing some slo-pitch and hunting and fishing.

According to Mike, in order to excel in hockey you, “Have to be a great leader. You have to be able to get along with a lot of people and be a good team guy.”

Having a good sense of humour is a big plus too.

With his only pre-ice vice being savouring a coffee before warmups, Mike says he’s a pretty straight forward guy and

Blazer Basketball Report Senior Boys The Senior Boys Basketball Team will be hosting their annual tournament this Friday and Saturday, January 11 and 12.

With teams from LCBI, Asquith, Unity, Kindersley, Davidson, Maple Creek and Rosetown attending it should be one of the better tournaments of the year. The

hasn’t picked up any quirks over the years.

This is Mike’s third year with the Nationals, and he mostly plays right wing.

Although he does play left wing and Center occasionally. He has always played as a forward throughout his hockey career and he likes it on the frontline, jokingly saying, “You don’t have to be the first guy back.”

Mike suffered a separated shoulder injury playing for the Nationals last year during the third game of the season. He had to forego playing until after Christmas but

his shoulder healed up well on its own without requiring surgical intervention.

He is very excited to be playing with the Nationals again this year and is looking forward to the playoffs with such a great group of guys.

He’s also pretty happy with the teams’ performance so far this year, saying only that, “Right now we are playing pretty good. We’ve gotta keep the puck out of our own net a little bit more, but other than that, it will all come together.”

Like many others on the team, Mike believes that Wilkie will be the team

that gives them the hardest workout for the win.

He’s confident however that the Nationals can meet the demands.

When he’s not on the ice as a Nationals representative, he is still fully immersed in hockey.

Whether it’s watching some NHL games, community activities like the recent Alumni game, or coaching the Biggar Novice team, Mike is truly dedicated to the sport.

“I try to watch one or two NHL games a week, if not more, but I’m usually pretty busy with the coaching and everything else. I like watching Montreal. They are not on very often out here, but I like to watch McDavid and I really like watching the Jets.”

When it comes to the professional games, Mike is a little disappointed to see the fighting leaving.

He says he understands the need for it to go, but he also sympathizes with the guys who don’t get to engage otherwise against the cheap shots that can occur.

Mike is a huge fan of the Biggar Fans. “They’ve been great this year.

They’ve been loud and I’d love to see more of them, So we’ll keeping winning if they keep coming. I love playing in front of a full rink! It is one hundred time better to play. You are so much more excited to get out there. So much more excited to hear them. It’s awesome and I also love seeing the kids at the rink.”

Well, you heard it here - more wins for Biggar if we keep filling those stands. We’re holding you to that Mike.
