Biggar Central School said a fond farewell to the graduates of 2019, June 27, with all the pomp and celebration that must be afforded to this group of young women and men. The grads had their official group photo in the park (below) courtesy of Jocelyn Redlick, taking a few precious moments to take some quick candids of friends and classmates (above). Guest speakers Derek Argue and TJ Wright roasted the grads (right) while Valedictorian, Madison Sopczak addressed the full gymnasium of well wishers. To all the grads, congratulations!

Disaster averted

by Delta Fay Cruickshank for the Biggar Museum and Gallery Well, can you imagine walking into work first thing in the morning and mat on the floor in the front vestibule is squishy with water . . . ? “Oh, no, no no!”

Stepping into the lobby, my feet are wet.

Can I turn off the security system without electrocuting myself?

The sound of water running, splashing throughout the water into the bathroom, water gushing out of the toilet.

“Please God, please God, I hope this is the knob that shuts the water off!”

And it did.

Now what do I do? Call someone who can really help. Mr. Carter. He is here lickety split, with his shop vac, and we begin sucking up water with his and the museum’s gigantic shop vac.

I need someone to help move out all the gift shop stuff. Who to call: Jim Rickwood. He’s been a board member for about five minutes, I hope he’s home and yes, he is. He’s over in no time moving out the piano, tables and shelving, etcetera.

I have to let the board know this is going on: the chair reminds me to call insurance. The Town of Biggar owns the building, they have to be notified. Marty Baroni is over, again lickety split.

The insurance company is called, the disaster crew is on their way out.

In the meantime, Jim

has a great idea. Call Mr. Itterman at One Stop and see if he could donate one of his carpet cleaning machines for an hour, no problem. Boy, does that machine suck up the water.

By 1 p.m. the Lyland Disaster crew is here, more water sucked up, and all the fans and humidifiers are up and running.

Because of the lickety split action by everyone I called, a horrible disaster was averted.

Good news, the water was contained only in the lobby and gift shop.

Good news, it happened during the week, not the weekend. Good news, it was clean water. Good news, the museum has a disaster plan to follow.

Good news, the persons called were over lickety split. Good news, other than the carpet and some damp drywall and insulation, nothing else got damaged.

So, we are now open for business. We only lost two days of business.

Christy has set up the gift shop in the museum; we have hung Evelyn Potter in China exhibit and the book sale is getting set up.

Business a usual, albeit with a wide open lobby.

Chances are, as the wheels of insurance and reconstruction goes, we may not be up to normal until much later in the summer, and yet, we are able to rejoice that a terrible disaster was averted.

Day program begins for the summer . . . Day Camp councillor Mickayla Farrell fills out a camper’s ‘People Bingo’ card, Tuesday during the first week of the Summer Day Camp. For ages 5-12, the camp runs from July 2 to August 23, Monday to Friday

in motion Community Chase coming to Biggar Saskatchewan in motion is bringing its Community Chase to Biggar.

The free family event kicks off at 5:30 p.m. on July 31 at the Sandra Schmirler Olympic Gold Park.

Teams of four to six will explore Biggar in a series of six fun team challenges. One lucky team will win a 3-in-1 Tailgate Game and some in motion swag.

“We hope the Chase inspires people to see their hometown in a new way,” says Marnie Forsberg, Manager, Saskatchewan in motion. “There are places to play around every corner if you use a little imagination.”

The event supports one of Saskatchewan in motion’s priorities: sending kids out to play and learn. This is something Forsberg says we don’t see enough of these days thanks to screen time, safety concerns and a focus on organized activities.

“Experts tell us that free play, especially outside, is essential for kids to grow up happy and healthy,” Forsberg explained. “We also know that kids are naturally more active when they’re outside, so we

encourage sending them out for some good oldfashioned play.”

You may have noticed Saskatchewan in motion around town in recent weeks. The organization works with communities to get local kids moving more. Community action specialist Julia Frigault has been visiting town, getting to know local leaders and learning what Biggar has to offer when it comes to physical activity.”

“We’re looking for communities that want to play with us,” says Frigault. “We like what we’re seeing in Biggar so far, so the Chase was a natural next step. If all goes well, you’ll be seeing a lot more of us in town.”

Saskatchewan in motion is hosting the Chase in partnership with Saskatchewan Blue Cross.

“We’re excited to support events like this that help renew a spirit of play in towns like Biggar,” says Lindsay Arnott, Community Relations coordinator with Saskatchewan Blue Cross. “We could all use a little more play in our lives!”

to learn more about the challenge and register their teams.

Deadline for registration is July 24. Space is limited, so register early.

Saskatchewan in motion is a movement of parents, community leaders, educators and decision makers taking action to get kids moving

more. The organization believes we’re all responsible for making sure the kids we care about get at least 60 to 90 minutes of physical activity every day.

Their vision is to make Saskatchewan a place where people sit less and move more.

Take time out to relax: that’s what summer is all about Some of the most thrilling things in life are done on impulse. Syrie James An acquaintance sent me an email a couple of days ago with some quotes on the benefits of doing things in the spur of the moment.

Yes, it is necessary to plan some events but there is something to be said for just being spontaneous.

We are now entering the summer holiday season when schedules and meetings are practically non-existent. Now is the time to call a friend and just chat or stop by and have a visit. It’s a more relaxing time of year by far.

So, just enjoy it. Don’t fret if the house is not perfect or there is a weed in the flower bed rather take a moment to sit down and enjoy the yard Maybe you have always wanted to see that museum in your own backyard but never have. Now is the time. Pack up the family, hop in the car and off you go.

Enjoy the summer.

Beatles Day -- July 10 Beatles Day. I didn’t realize this was even a celebration so not sure what that says about me as a fan.

But, since 2008 it is celebrated in Liverpool (and Hamburg) every year on July 10. The first one was held in 1964 and it heralded the return of the rock band from their U. S. tour just in time for the premiere of their film A Hard Day’s Night. This day is considered one of the landmarks in their rise to fame thus the celebration.

I was fortunate to attend a performance by Paul McCartney a few years ago. Yes, he had aged. Let’s be honest, at the time, he was in his seventies. But, the voice and the music were just as strong as ever. He was still every inch a showman and the audience got their money’s worth.

What’s even harder to believe is that there are still Beatles songs that have never been released. Carnival of Light is one as well as a 27 minute jam session of Helter Skelter. Then there is Grow Old with Me, a composition by John Lennon which the three surviving Beatles worked on together in the early nineties.

Ghoti Some people are bound to take exception to the above title, and my only reply (in defense) is, “Can’t you read English?�

In the English word, “enough�, the “gh� is pronounced as “F� and again in the English word “woman� the “O� is pronounced “I�; also, in the word “condition� the “ti� is pronounced as “sh�. So, according to Euclid, GHOTI=FISH. Q.E.D, eh?

Y.T. didn’t intend this small article as a lesson in the peculiarities of the English language, so much as to record how ghoti themselves have affected (his) life, so here goes.

About 300 years ago Issak Walton in his book, The Complete Angler wrote abut fishing: “we may say of angling what Dr. Boteler said of strawberries, doubtless God could have made a better berry, but never did; and so, if I might be the judge, God never did make a more calm, quiet, innocent recreation than angling.�

Y.T. is not sure about that “innocent and calm� bit, but this is the way most fishing has appeared to him.

I know that Mr. Walton portrayed angling almost as a past time, but we worked at and ate most of the ones we caught up in the river.

Catching them always involved a bit of effort, too. Heck, John Berletoff darn near drowned while getting fish out ot his trap one time.

I imagine that there are thousands, mebbe millions, of people who have little “fish� stories to tell, and if Y.T. happened to hear them, he would probably just remark “yeah, yeah�, and turn away. So, if the reader wants to move on a bit to something more interesting, Y.T. will understand.

It’s summer, and that means it’s construction season. The focus of July’s Traffic Safety Spotlight is work zones.

Encountering one of the orange zones may result in a bit of a delay while you’re en route to your next fun summer destination, but SGI is reminding drivers to be mindful of workers while travelling through those construction areas – be patient, slow down and stay alert. Always obey traffic signs and directions from any flag person you see. “Workers and machinery are both very close to traffic in work zones,� said Shantel Lipp, President of the Saskatchewan Heavy Construction Association. “Work zones tend to be more congested due to lane reductions, so things can happen fast – which makes any number of speeders in work zones unacceptable.� “These workers are our friends, neighbours, and family members – it’s important that we do our part to get them home safe,� said Collin Pullar, President of the Saskatchewan Construction Safety Association. “Through awareness

and education, we can prevent many incidents and close calls in our work zones and help create the safest construction environment in Canada.�

Drivers are required to slow to 60 km/h or the speed that’s posted when passing a highway worker, flag person or highway equipment with warning lights flashing.

Exceeding the 60 km/h speed limit by 20 km/h will cost you $440. If you’re going 40 km/h over the limit, that’s going to cost you $1,008. Plus, you’ll lose at least three Safe Driver Recognition points on your licence, which can lead to further financial penalties.

The fines are significant for a reason. Reducing your speed can help avoid a close call, or something much worse.

Give yourself more time to react to a potential collision and reduce your speed.

Police will be keeping an eye on work zones in July, and some work zones will be monitored by photo radar. In 2018, there were nearly 1,500* convictions for speeding in work zones. That’s nearly 1,500 times driv-

ers ignored reduced speed limits and put workers’ lives at risk.

Drivers can follow these tips to keep our roads safe: Always give the road your full attention, but it’s especially important in work zones. Slow down and expect the unexpected.

When planning your trip, expect delays – leave earlier, and be patient.

Keep a safe following distance between you and the vehicle in front of you.

Obey posted signs and flag persons. You may not see workers right away, and even if they aren’t there work zones have other safety hazards to keep in mind.

When a lane is closed in a work zone, embrace the zipper merge. It makes traffic flow more quickly and efficiently.

Both road safety and workplace safety are priorities for SGI. We support Safe Saskatchewan’s Mission: Zero. The only acceptable number of preventable injuries in Saskatchewan is zero.

From horrible to disastrous - trade with China becomes a nightmare Just when you thought the trade waters could not get any muddier between Canada and China, they do.

Trade works best when supply and demand is the driving force.

Trade does not work very well when outside forces are applied to the process, in particular when govern-

ments use the process of trade as a club in nontrade disputes.

The current situation between Canada and China might be a textbook example, with the two countries embroiled in a dispute after the chief Calvin Daniels financial officer of Huawei Technologies

What that arrest warrant has to do with trade of course is nothing at all, but China is using trade to try and force Canada to do what it wishes. The situation is silly on one hand, two nations in dispute over an arrest warrant for a guy with the resources to hire a legion of lawyers to his defence.

On the other hand the disruption to trade is hugely serious, especially in terms of agriculture trade as it is a key area of dealings between the two countries.

Now China has made a decision to block imports of Canadian meat.

But this decision is just a bit outside the Huawei debate, although that ongoing issue likely made China’s choice regarding meat imports easier to make in terms of blocking deals because it continues to put pressure on Canada.

China has said it wants the Canadian government to temporarily stop allowing meat shipments to China after bogus pork export certificates were discovered.

The issue is of particular concern to the pork sector as its impact on Canada could be significant as this country is the world’s third-biggest shipper.

However, the decision has the potential to hit China hard too, as they turn to meat imports after African swine fever killed millions of its pigs.

Canada, in spite of any questionable certificates on likely limited shipments, still makes sense

as a source to meet China’s need for out-sourced pork.

While there are of course other pork exporting countries for China to deal with, this announcement does

throw a wrench into trade workings.

For example, the United States, the second-biggest global pork exporter, isn’t an obvious backfillsource since it is subject to a 62 per cent Chinese tariff, with China and US president Donald Trump in a dispute of their own.

The meat dispute will certainly do nothing except add to the tension in trade between Canada and China and cold push a resolution of things farther down the road, and that is unfortunate because the two countries have far more to gain by an amiable flow of trade.

Itʼs strawberry time Summer is here and strawberry season is one of the most celebrated times of the year for lovers of this luscious red fruit.

I always buy an abundant amount of all fruit when it is in season, and strawberries are no exception.

Although strawberries seem to be available throughout the entire year, thanks to our friends in the south; they are not as good as the ones we get fresh right here from our local farmers.

Imported strawberries from warmer climates have usually been cultivated in a way, which produces a larger and firmer berry more durable for transport. This is

great for having strawberries available yearround, however these cultivation methods are also the culprit for producing a berry that usually is not as sweet or flavourful as it’s locally availChef Dez able counterpart. Thus, we tend to rely on sweeteners and flavour enhancers, such as sugar or chocolate, when serving them. A small amount of balsamic vinegar is also, surprisingly, a great way to bring out the flavour of fresh strawberries.

Strawberries are very perishable and should be handled and stored with care.

First of all, never buy a basket of strawberries that contains any spoiled ones. Although it may only be one berry, microscopic mould spores have already been transferred to adjacent berries in the basket. This will lead to the whole basket of fruit deteriorating faster. Since washing and handling of the berries will also increase the rapidness of spoilage, only wash the amount needed and leave the others untouched.

The washing of strawberries should only be done with the whole berry intact. If the green top is removed, you will find that the centre is somewhat hollow. This cavity will collect water and dramatically reduce (water down) the amount of flavour. Unwashed leftover berries should be

stored in the refrigerator in a covered container to keep their “musty” odour from dispersing throughout. A drain tray in this container would be ideal, as it would aid in air circulation within, by keeping any moisture trapped at the bottom and away from the

berries.

Freezing is another option for preservation, however as with most fragile fruit quality loss in texture is a concern.

Strawberries are high in vitamin C and the most optimal way of maintaining their nutritional value is to leave them whole. Cut strawberries have more surface area,

and thus loose nutrients faster. To prepare for freezing, wash the berries intact, pat them dry, remove the green tops, and transfer them to a freezer bag and use them within the next six months for best results.

There are many dishes that you can prepare using strawberries.

The most traditional are desserts such as strawberry shortcake and chocolate dipped strawberries.

However, they also work great as tid-bits on cheese platter or make them into a salsa to spoon over grilled

chicken or fish. Many people have never made a salsa out of fruit, but it is very simple and the contrasting flavours are very complimentary to the grilled fish or meat it is being served upon.

To accomplish making a great strawberry salsa, just add an assortment of items to small-diced strawberries, such as red onion, yellow bell pepper, jalapeno, cilantro, lime juice, and season with a little salt and pepper.

You will be amazed at the results – and since it is strawberry season, the time to experiment is now.

Wickenheiser, Sinclair in sports spotlight Newspaper and Web site headline writers recently took a temporary break from golfer Brooke Henderson and tennis player Biance Andreescu.

When it comes to Canadian female athletes, the major headlines recently have been for two others - a pair of Canada’s most accomplished and veteran performers.

Forty-yearold Hayley Wickenheiser, not a stretch to be called the best female hockey player ever, was named to the Hockey Hall of Fame during the same week that Christine Sinclair, Canada’s best ever soccer player and among the top three or four women players in the world, may have played her last game in a historic career.

Sinclair and her Canadian team-mates fell 1-0 to Sweden in the round of 16 to be eliminated from the women’s World Cup and it’s likely the 36-year-old Burnaby native and team captain won’t play another international game with the Maple Leaf on the front of her uniform. If she never plays another game, her body of work on the soccer pitch is unparalleled. She is No. 2 in the goal-scoring annals of international women’s soccer, with 182, trailing only Amy Wambach of the United States. She was named Canadian soccer player of the year an unprecedented 14 times. Basically, she’s the Wayne Gretzky of Canadian women’s soccer, and there’s no higher

praise.

If Sinclair is the Gretzky of soccer, then Wickenheiser is the Sinclair of women’s hockey.

No one comes close to her rank as Canada’s best.

A native of Shaunavon, Sask., Wickenheiser - now Bruce Penton studying to become a doctor (talk about an accomplished high achiever) - played for Canada’s national team for 23 years. She was the best player on four Canadian goldmedal teams and one silver-medal squad at the Olympics. She also played professionally for a couple of seasons in European men’s leagues.

Her knowledge of hockey and her stature within the sport is such that Toronto Maple Leafs added her to their management staff last year, as the assistant director of player development.

Wickenheiser headlines a group of six inductees to the 2019 Hockey Hall of Fame, the ceremony for which takes place in November. Others to be honoured this year are ex-NHLers Guy Carbonneau, Vaclav Nedomansky and Sergei Zubov and builders Jim Rutherford and Jerry York.

Twenty years from now, Halls of Fame will likely come calling for the likes of Henderson and Andreescu, but for the time being, let’s salute Wickenheiser and Sinclair, both of whom provided long-time excellence and class to the Canadian sports scene.
