St. Gabriel School students hit the Rec Complex, Friday for a bit of friendly competition with their annual Track and Field Day. Cool and a bit rainy, no one seemed to mind, as their were equal cries of victory and shouts of encouragement - a true spirit of sportsmanship and competitive ‘joie de vivre’ - a strange lesson imparted to those a little bit older from those so much younger!

U16 Western Championships promise exciting ball in Biggar this August Mark August 2-5 down on your calendar for some incredible action on the diamonds.

The top Western Canadian under 16 B teams will be in Biggar on those dates, and it will feature nine of the best girls softball teams the country can produce from Western Canada.

Dion Harrabek, coach of the host Biggar Nationals says that after a previous provincial championship at the Rec Complex, they decided to make a run at the 2019 Western Canadian Championships.

“We thought, what the heck, let’s put in a bid!”

Harrabek explained, adding that those provincials brought improvements to the Rec Complex that will be long-lasting and much needed: new fencing, field improvements,

concession upgrades, a new roofed open-air structure, batting cage upgrade, covered dugouts for all diamonds.

A show this big will need volunteers. “[We need] concession workers, ticket takers, announcers, score keepers, the whole bit.”

You can contact his wife, Andrea at 9486865 if you would like to get involved in what will prove to be an exciting event for Biggar, and show off our town and area to visitors from across the country. The earlier you volunteer, the better the organizing committee can get a feel for the August 2-5 weekend.

Spotty rain fall hampering 2019 crop Many areas of the province that are in need of rain did not receive any this past week. However, localized rain helped to

relieve dry topsoil moisture conditions in the northwest and southeast, according to the weekly crop report for June 4

to 10.

The moisture will help with crop germination and growth, while encouraging hay land

and pasture growth.

Across the province, seeding operations are mostly complete, but there are a few fields

being seeded for green feed and silage. Germination is patchy and crop growth is slow in some regions due to the dry conditions but the recent rain has helped where it was received.

Parts of the southeastern region reported large amounts of rain this past week. The Weyburn area recorded up to 69 millimetres and the Broadview area 25 millimetres.

In the northwest, areas around Lloydminster received 40 millimetres.

However, areas around Gravelbourg, Kyle, Leader, Bethune, Craik, Outlook and Kindersley remain very dry, having received less than 25 millimetres of rain since April 1.

Topsoil moisture conditions improved where rain was received, but continue to deteriorate across the province due to the strong winds and lack of moisture. Cropland topsoil moisture is rated as 21 per cent adequate, 42 per cent short and 37 per cent very short. Topsoil moisture

on hay land and pasture is rated as 17 per cent adequate, 32 per cent short and 51 per cent very short.

Crop growth is delayed in much of the province, and most crops are behind their normal developmental stages for this time of year, due to lack of moisture.

Thirty-seven per cent of fall cereals are reported being in the shotblade stage and 28 per cent are heading, while 43 per cent of the spring cereals are tillering. Thirty per cent of canola is emerging and 37 per cent is in the seedling stage, along with 34 per cent of the flax. Ninety-five per cent of the pulse crops are emerging and in the vegetative growth stage.

The majority of crop damage this past week was due to frost, strong winds, insects such as flea beetles, cutworms, grasshoppers, wireworms and a lack of moisture.

Farmers are busy controlling pests and hauling grain.

“Canadians know first-hand the impacts of plastic pollution, and are tired of seeing their beaches, parks, streets, and shorelines littered with plastic waste. We have a responsibility to work with our partners to reduce plastic pollution, protect the environment, and create jobs and grow our economy. We owe it to our kids to keep the environment clean and safe for generations to come.”

The Rt. Hon. Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada So stated the Prime Minister as he announced a ban on single use plastics.

Well, I don’t know which beaches the Prime Minister and his family frequent but the beaches at the more than 100,000 lakes in Saskatchewan are not littered with garbage. They are clean as is the water. People here take care of Mother Nature and pick up after themselves.

What’s more the Prime Minister has not only announced to all Canadians but to all the citizens of the world that Canada is polluted. So much so that as a country Canadians are irresponsible. What a blow to tourism!

Of course, this is not true.

Canada contributes less than 0.01 MT (million of metric tonnes) of mismanaged plastic waste. Compare that with China which accounts for 27.7 per cent of the world’s mismanaged plastic.

Then, there is the cost. Canadians simply don’t want to pay for a ban -- 83 per cent said so. The highest they are willing to pay is 2.5 per cent on the price of goods. As well all know the price of consumer goods will go up considerably higher than that with a plastics ban.

The better solution would be to re-examine recycling and work towards a solution of either re-using plastics or finding an alternative use for them.

In the mean time, if the lakes in Mr. Trudeau’s province are so polluted, come to Saskatchwan and enjoy our pristine unpolluted lakes.

Dear Editor: As regards to the letter of Joel Ellis in The Independent concerning restaurants in Biggar being unclean and filthy.

I think Joel got into his “joy juice” and this affected his seeing ability

and judgment.

I have been in all of the restaurants and can see nothing amiss. They look clean and tidy to me, food is good, waitresses and waiters are top of the line.

What more can you ask for?

Lord Stanley’s Cup a legacy for all time It’s June. It’s summer and still there is hockey playing on the television.

At the time I am writing this column there is one game left to decide who will be this year’s winner of the coveted Stanley Cup. But, this trophy which is the oldest existing trophy to be awarded to a professional sports team did not originate with the NHL. The International Ice Hockey Federation considers it one of “the most important championships available to the sport.”

When Lord Stanley of Preston was the Governor General of Canada he donated the cup to be awarded to Canada’s top ranking amateur hockey club. The winner of the

first cup was the Montreal Hockey Club which claimed victory in 1893.

The Seattle Metropolitans Hockey Team was the first American team to win the Stanley Cup. During the years from 1893 to 1914, the winners of the Stanley Cup were determined by challenge games and league play.

In 1915 two professional hockey organizations -- the National Hockey Association and the Pacific Coast Hockey Association agreed that their respective champions would play each other for the trophy. It wasn’t until 1926 that the Stanley Cup was officially established as the championship trophy of the NHL. Incidentally the NHL does not actually

Even so, there have been some breaks in this tradition most recently in 2001 when the Colorado Avalanche won the series. When team captain Joe Sakic was awarded the cup he turned to Ray Bourque, a 22 year veteran, and handed him the Cup for the first victory lap.

I can remember my dad watching the hockey games. Those were the days of Rocket Richard, Gordie Howe, Bobby Orr, and there were only six teams.

with three overtime goals in the Stanley Cup final. Tony Esposito, who played with the Chicago Blackhawks, holds the record for the most goals allowed in one final. He allowed 32 goals in six games against the Canadiens in 1973.

For years, the commentators had the name of one coach on their lips. Scotty Bowman. He holds the record for winning the most Stanley Cup championships at nine. Five with the Montreal Canadiens, one with the Pittsburgh Penguins, three with the Detroit Red Wings.

The trivia and history just goes on. Hopefully, your team wins the Cup this year.

Smith!

A shell must have hit a tree and some of it fell into Smith’s trench, almost cutting his legs off. Acksel Hanson, our stretcher bearer, found him a little later and we carried him out.

Smith knew he was dying and scribbled an address on an old piece of paper we handed him just before he died.

It was the address of his wife, Jean Francis Smith, Hearts Content, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland. We never wrote and told her of the horrible death, but what a nice address.

When we attacked (well defended Veen) the Colonel (fairly new at the job) sent two platoons against a well defended position.

As they were not sure where each other were, they attacked.

All of one platoon was either killed or taken prisoner. One was our best known and like.

It was Cpl. Smith, who calmly said to his boys, “Well, we gotta go boys, eh?�

He only got a little more than 10 feet before he was killed.

We were called to replace that platoon soon afterward. The Colonel reported that he had made a mistake and immediately fell asleep.

Smitty was well known and well liked and died doing his duty.

A few years ago Y.T. decided to look up his cousin in Vancouver.

We were visiting our daughter out there and I thought that mebbe we should get in touch,

Eagle Creek Wildlife holds awards gala The annual March awards, banquet and fund raiser of the Eagle Creek Wildlife was held in the Perdue Complex.

It was well attended, great food catered by Perdue Arena Rebuild.

Lots of raffle prizes and awards for fish, mule deer, elk, antelope and geese.

The 25th Annual Fish Fry was also well attended at the end of April in Asquith. There was no snow this year on the day.

Another annual event is the Kids Fishing Derby, June 2 a Eagle Creek Regional Park.

There were many attending on a very hot day at the trout pond. Prizes for winners were given to: Kash Fischer of Kinley, 2 lbs 5 oz trout; Lenny Rogan of Kinley, 2 lb trout; Billy Rogan of Kinley, 8 oz. trout.

Entrants were two years up to 15 years. Everyone enjoyed hot dogs, drink and sweets at noon.

The branch added in 100 fingerlings this

spring, as well Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation added 1,000 fingerlings.

The larger trout did well, survived the winter with the help of an aeration system working in the pond. Fishing is open for everyone at the trout pond.

The branch has earmarked $20,000 for Habitat Land purchases and has sponsored a young girl to Hannin Creek Youth camp for one week this year.

It is true that many people in that part of the world did change their names to “Smith� in order . . . well . . . to keep order.

So much for us immigrants, eh?

It would be nice to write that all went well in the next few years, but it wasn’t very long until we found what many European folks were fleeing from.

His name was Smith alright, but it wasn’t his fault. Actually, one of the “enemy� guys had just boldly walked into our position in the Hochwald Forest, found where we were and went boldly back to his mortar crew, who shelled the dickens out of us, wounding Smith terribly. While most of us waited for our senior officer (few and far between) to tell us to shoot back or at least take the fellow prisoner.

Mingling a bit over the coffee table with the people here has somehow straightened me out though, and I grabbed my pen again.

Subject: Smith!

In our old home town during the late ‘20s and ‘30s was an old blacksmith who couldn’t remember names. At that time a lot of Central Europeans were coming to Canada because of the unrest in Europe and many moved to Canada and couldn’t speak very good English.

So, our friend decided to ask his customers to spell their names.

This worked well for awhile. Some of the names from Central Europe were hard to pronounce.

It so happened that one day a fellow from the Fermac speaking town came in to get a couple of plow shears sharpened.

As the blacksmith began to fill out his order he asked: “How do you spell your name?�

Liberal’s anti-oil legacy

by Kelly Block, MP, Carlton TrailEagle Creek Shortly after becoming Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau revealed his plan for our energy industry, “We can’t shut down the oilsands tomorrow. We need to phase them out.”

It appears that if he has his way, they’ll be “phased out” sooner rather than later.

With three anti-oil and gas Bills before the House and Senate, the last two weeks have served as a reminder that this Liberal government has pursued an aggressive anti-oilsands agenda from day one.

In fact, the Liberals are so obsessed with this objective that they are willing to trample Indigenous and Inuit land rights to stop energy development.

When Trudeau cancelled the Northern Gateway Pipeline, he economically damaged the 30 plus First Nations who had revenue sharing

agreements in place with the pipeline owner.

Now, Eagle Spirit Energy, a First Nationsowned and operated pipeline company, is suing the government over Bill C-48, which bans oil tanker traffic off British Columbia’s northern coast. The Bill will prevent their planned pipeline from being built, as the proposed route to tidewater ends within the affected area.

Just this Tuesday, June 11, I had the opportunity to speak on Bill C-88.

This Bill imposes a fiveyear moratorium on the development of offshore oil and gas projects in Canada’s north. That ban was announced by Trudeau at a glitzy press conference in Washington DC, without any consultation with the Territorial governments, nor the Inuit themselves.

In fact, the Territorial governments were given barely more than an hour’s notice that they were about to lose control of their natural resources

to a Prime Minister who believes that “Ottawa Knows Best.”

Premier Bob McLeod of the Northwest Territories said that C-88 “feels like a step backward.”

This is just another example of the Liberals ignoring Aboriginal voices that support the development of our oil and gas resources.

The Senate also returned the “No More Pipelines” Bill C-69 to the House with a jawdropping, unprecedented 187 amendments.

C-69, reverses many of the changes made by the previous Conservative government including the approval process for large projects like pipelines.

The Bill passed in the House despite strong Conservative opposition. It is dubbed the “No More Pipelines Act” because of the many loopholes that would allow opponents to stop a pipeline project dead in its tracks. Some of those loopholes are seemingly unintentional, while others are blatantly designed for “progressive” activists to take any pipeline project to court indefinitely.

For example, this “No Pipelines Bill” amends

the Navigation Protection Act, changing the definition of “navigable water” to include any creek or stream that could float a kayak. Essentially, any project that so much as builds near a seasonal creek will now require a costly assessment from the federal government, all to ensure that “navigation” is not adversely affected. This not only serves to make things more difficult for major projects like pipelines, but it will also increase red tape and regulations on small and medium sized projects, including those undertaken by municipalities.

The Liberals have poisoned our resource sector and driven away foreign investment. They have killed the Northern Gateway and Energy East Pipelines, stalled the Trans Mountain Extension, introduced anti-oil and gas legislation in C-48, C-69, and C-88, and, of course, introduced the job-killing carbon tax.

It’s clear that Trudeau is serious when he says he wants to “phase out” the oilsands.

We should take him seriously.

Standing against harmful federal bills

by Randy Weekes, MLA, Biggar-Sask Valley (13 June, 2019) Saskatchewan, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, New Brunswick and the Northwest Territories recently sent a letter to the Prime Minister calling for two things: his government to accept the Senate’s amendments to Bill C-69; and not to pass Bill C-48.

Bill C-69 “the no more pipelines bill� and Bill C-48 “the no more oil tankers bill� are two incredibly divisive pieces of legislation.

C-69, as originally drafted, would make it impossible to develop critical infrastructure and deprive Canada of muchneeded investment. C-48 threatens investor confidence, and the tanker moratorium discriminates against Western Canadian crude products.

On Bill C-69, Senate amendments could have avoided the most damaging effects of the bill on our energy and industrial sectors. Unfortunately, Prime Minister Trudeau and his government have rejected the advice of six Canadian Premiers representing 59 per cent of Canada’s population, as well as the advice of the

Canadian Senate.

In rejecting these amendments to Bill C-69, the Prime Minister has turned his back on sectors that employ hundreds of thousands of Canadians and generate wealth that benefits the entire nation. His response suggesting Premiers are acting “irresponsibly� on national unity, is not the response we had hoped for. After all, it is the Prime Minister’s divisive policies threatening the economic well-being of our nation.

As it stands, the federal government appears indifferent to the economic hardships faced by provinces and territories.

Immediate action to refine or eliminate these bills is needed to avoid further alienating provinces and territories and their citizens.

Reducing emissions without federal carbon tax Saskatchewan’s Constitutional Law Branch has filed a notice of appeal with the Supreme Court of Canada that will see our case against the carbon tax taken to the highest court of our nation.

The Government of Saskatchewan now has a two-month window to file the province’s factum

to the Supreme Court of Canada.

Meanwhile, our government’s Prairie Resilience plan is designed to achieve actual greenhouse gas reductions by 2030.

Despite the imposition of the ineffective federal carbon tax, the Government of Saskatchewan is working to develop a carbon offset framework that accounts for economic growth, competitiveness and trade exposure.

Our government is committed to designing an offset program that best serves the needs of the province. With input from Saskatchewan industries, associations, producer groups and other diverse stakeholders, we can design a system that extends to all sectors to help the province shift to a lowercarbon economy.

Saskatchewan’s Prairie Resilience climate change strategy includes more than 40 commitments across five areas, designed to reduce emissions and strengthen Saskatchewan’s resilience to the climatic, economic and policy impacts of climate change. The Prairie Resilience strategy is available at saskatchewan.ca/climate-change.

I would note I know little if anything about modern mining or the forestry sector either.

That said how potash is mined does not impact my thinking in the same way I think about how the food on my table comes to be there.

People should care about their food. It’s important in fact, that they do.

But, they can only make informed decisions, can only formulate informed opinion, with good information. Good information is often best obtained by firsthand information gathering.

For food, that means knowing what happens on the farm, and why it happens. From that foundation good decisions can begin to formulate.

So it is imperative producers are diligent in providing access to good information, even in small town Canada, so residents better understand the farm sector.

The mood-boosting feeling of rejuvenation many people experience while spending time in nature is not in their heads. In fact, researchers in parts of Asia have long since studied and documented the benefits of spending time in nature.

Developed in Japan in the 1980s, the practice of Shinrin-yoku, often referred to as “forest

bathing,” has become a part of Japanese medicine. According to Shinrin-yoku.org, the premise behind forest bathing is that spending time in nature via a relaxing walk can prove calming, rejuvenating and restorative.

The benefits of spending time in nature have long been suspected, but only recently has scientific research begun

to indicate just how beneficial such time can be. In 2018, researchers from the University of East Anglia released a report indicating some eye-opening benefits of living close to nature and spending time outside.

In the report, researchers linked exposure to greenspace with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, premature death, pre-

term birth, stress, and high blood pressure. In addition to those benefits, Shinrin-yoku.org notes that research indicates forest bathing can improve mood; increase one’s ability to focus, even among children diagnosed with ADHD; accelerate recovery from injury or illness; and improve sleep.

The approach to forest bathing promoted

by Shinrin-yoku.org combines leisurely walks on paths under a forest canopy with guided activities. Such activities are designed to open the senses, help people hone their intuition and experience the forest as they never had before.

Mindfulness meditation practices also may be included in a forest bathing session.

Men and women interested in learning more about the benefits of forest bathing can contact their physicians to discuss the role nature can play in improving their overall health.

Popular sports for spring and summer are in jeopardy; and rookie sluggers are becoming household names.

“Home run hitters drive Cadillacs and singles hitters drive Fords,” is a popular baseball saying, often attributed to Pittsburgh Pirates slugger Ralph Kiner.

In 2019, the home-run metaphor is more likely related to money: Homerun hitters get $300 million multiyear contracts; singles hitters starve by comparison.

Last year’s New York Yankees, led by Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge, broke the singleseason team record for homers with 266. This year, at not quite the halfway point, three teams - Minnesota Twins, Houston Astros and Los Angeles Dodgers - are on pace to eclipse that mark. The Twins, in fact, would finish with 326 blasts if they maintained their current pace.

In Canada, the homerun story has centred around rookie Vladimir Guerrero, Jr., who was called up to the Blue

leading the AAA International League in homers when he was called up by the Braves on May 15. In his first 29 MLB games, he belted 11 homers.

And how about Houston rookie Yordon Alvarez, who hit four home runs in his first five games.

How does Home Run Alvarez sound?

Overall, the home-run leaders in MLB were Milwaukee’s Christian Yelich, whose 26 homers in 63 games was proof that his MVP season of 2018 was not a fluke.

Alonso, almost certainly the National League rookie-of-the-year favourite, was tied with the Dodgers’ Cody Bellinger for runner-up with 22.

Edwin Encarnacion, the A.L. home run leader with Seattle, was traded June 15 to the Yankees to add to their Murderers’ Row. With the World Series on the line this October, don’t be surprised to see a walk-off home run end the 2019 season.

Sports are a favorite pastime for many children and adults. The benefits of participating in sports are too numerous to mention, but include learning to be part of a team, improving physical fitness and developing sportsmanship.

Participation in sports helps build character and social skills. Sports help children develop discipline and encourages them to set goals. These are skills that can be utilized later in life, especially when pursuing a career.

As the weather warms, there are many different spring and summer sports that children and adults can explore. Here are just some of the sports that make spring and summer that much

more fun.

Baseball: Baseball has long been a favou-

rite pastime, but its fan base stretches around the world. According to an annual report by the Sports & Fitness Industry Association, baseball and softball combined ranked as the most participated in team sport in 2016. Many youngsters

start out on youth baseball or softball teams and move up the ranks as their love of the game grows.

Lacrosse: This is a team game originally played

by North American native peoples. The ball is thrown, caught and carried with a long-handled stick having a curved L-shape or a triangular frame.

Soccer: Soccer’s popularity continues to grow exponentially. It is often one of the first sports a child will try. In a 2017 Nielsen survey that spanned 18 global markets, 43 per cent of people said they were “interested” or “very interested” in the sport. It has grown to become the world’s sport, with teams in most major countries.

Softball: A close cousin to baseball, softball is played on a smaller diamond with a ball that’s larger than a baseball. Even though both sexes can play softball, it is primarily a femaledriven sport among elementary, high school and college players.

Swimming: Swimming is a sport that works the entire body.

People are drawn to swimming because it can be a low-impact exercise. Whether enjoyed competitively or for recreation, swimming is a great way to have fun while exercising.

Tennis: Tennis is a physical sport that provides cardiovascular exercise. Tennis offers friendly competition and can be played in singles or pairs. While matches primarily take place outdoors, the weather doesn’t have to impact access when an indoor court is available.

Volleyball: Beach volleyball is popular in coastal and non-coastal communities alike. It is an intense, competitive sport that requires excellent focus and teamwork.
