Planted potatoes.

And that is precisely what Jayla Boobyer/ Moore and Kristen Hoffinger/Peiffer did in the planter in front of the Biggar Museum and Gallery.

Yes, we are a little late, but, it did rain in the night after planting them. Fingers crossed it will be a fine crop of spuds come the fall.

Maybe we will get other students to harvest them; make some potato salad, or some fried, or maybe a bit pot of potato and leek soup. You can be assured it will be a hands on experience and a history lesson for some lucky students. The seed potatoes were donated

by Carolyn McLean, cochair of the Board for the Biggar Museum and Gallery.

We jazzed up the planting with marigolds donated by Rita Sutherland, a very active and appreciated board member and volunteer.

weeded, but she is going to be a very busy girl . . . if you see a weed, feel free to pull it.

These two Grade 8 girls have been working every Thursday afternoon helping out in the museum. They have been given many tasks and have completed them well and enthusiastically.

Their biggest task was to be a part of organizing the museum’s Fam-

ily Research Library. It is almost all done and the end result will be a library filled with references to the growth of Biggar and District, family histories, pictures, World War One attestations papers, recorded history books, history of Saskatchewan books, et cetera, and it will all be indexed and on a computer.

Benefit concert to aid ranchers in wake of Argo fire A benefit event is planned for this July 6 to help raise much needed cash for the Argo area ranchers affected by the devastating fire that swept through the area this mid-April.

Featuring country music artist Chris Henderson, the event will take place at the Jubilee Stadium, featuring a live auction and dance. The event, part of a relief fund, is being set up by

the Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association (SSGA).

Shortly after the April fire, SSGA launched a Wildfire Relief Fund to help ranchers in the Argo area affected by the wild-

fire. Over 22,000 acres of grass pastures were lost and at least 75 miles of fences were destroyed.

For cattle producers, the losses are a devastating setback at this time of the year, just when cattle need to be turned out to pasture. There are reports of some producers losing up to 80 per cent of their grazing pasture for the year.

“By bringing together the community, this benefit is a way to support those cattle producers affected by the wildfire,” stated SSGA President Bill Huber.

In the short term, cattle producers will have to buy feed and rent summer grazing land to replace lost grass which may need up to two years to recover.

The Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation (SWF) has also come on board for the event.

“We are proud to be the presenting sponsor of the Argo Wildfire Benefit Concert,” said Darrell Crabbe, SWF Executive Director. “Most ranchers provide access to Saskatchewan’s hunting and angling community, and

we felt playing a role in this event provides the SWF an opportunity to return their ongoing support. Ranchers provide crucial wildlife habitat and support healthy wildlife populations through stewardship of the land.”

Chris Henderson, originally from Estevan, has been a released three albums and has become a go-to artist for Country music lovers in the province. He’s appeared at the Craven Country Jamboree, Big Valley Jamboree, among others, and has been nominated for 24 Saskatchewan Country Music awards.

Tickets are available in advance for $25 or at the door for $30. Doors open at 7 p.m. with the concert starting at 8 p.m. For tickets, contact the Biggar and District Credit Union or SSGA at (306) 757-8523.

“We’re asking our members, and everyone who can help, to pull together for those in the ranching community who suffered losses due to the wildfire,” Huber said.

Successful fair days once again Wow! Was that ever a busy weekend.

Town and Country Fair Days is over for another year and there was no shortage of events. From activities for the kids, to early morning breakfasts, to the car show -- there was something for everyone and every age.

I did meet a couple of the organizers throughout the weekend and they were pleased with the turnout as they should be. I know one of them was going home Sunday night, sitting down, having a refreshment and then off to bed.

Once again, they all did a great job and deserve a thank you. Sometimes we forget the people in the background who do the work -- it may seem like a thankless job -- but know that your efforts are appreciated.

As always, they are always looking for help and there is next year’s fair days to plan. If you have some time talk to one of the committee members.

Fathers honoured with their own day Ah, the month of June.

Finally, warmer temperatures and the opportunity to be outside.

Barbecues and sitting in the sun (or shade). The month seems to be filled with constant wind up events for the anticipated two months break from schedules and school.

Each year in this part of the world the third Sunday in June is set aside for Father’s Day. The day when we take time to say “thanks” to fathers, grandfathers and uncles who make an impression on our lives.

In other countries the day can be celebrated any time from March to August.

While fathers do not bring out the sentiment that is given to mothers

on their day, it is still a memorable day. Flower shops do not benefit from this celebration but it is estimated about $1 billion are spent each year on gifts for the men.

It was not easy getting this day declared for fathers. It started in West Virginia in 1908 when 362 men who had died in the explosions at a coal company in that state were honoured at a Sunday sermon.

The year after that, a woman who was raised by her father, a widower, tried to establish a day just for male parents.

She went to local churches, the YMCA, shopkeepers and government officials in support of her idea. Washington State recognized her efforts

Canada. Perhaps one of the reasons for the lack of enthusiasm came from fathers themselves who didn’t want a “sentimental” day. Besides as they pointed out, any gifts that would be bought would likely be paid for by them anyway.

Still, the day is a chance for families to get together.

Many of them will have backyard barbecues or take dad golfing or fishing. There are many ways to celebrate the day. Dads are sometimes given gifts and cards.

In Germany, the day

is called Men’s Day and men pull wagons of food and drink around town, ending with a picnic.

Italians also call the day St. Joseph’s Day and there is a big party with music, singing, dancing and lots of traditional foods.

Mexicans have a marathon every year. The 21 kilometre run raises money to help protect the forests.

Birthday parties, cards, jam sessions and lunches at the New Horizons

by Chasity Braitenbach It has been a couple of weeks since the last New Horizons report so we have a number of events to report on.

We had our monthly birthday potluck on May 13. There were 28 people in attendance and the half-and-half winner of the day was Gail Herzberg. A very happy birthday to our members: Anita Beckstead, Joy Hinchliff, Karen Itterman, Dinah Kegler, Annette McKay, Orest Polowick, Pearl Silvernagle, Edith (May) Tarasoff, Iris Tebb and Genny Wirachowsky.

May 15 was the last Jam Session before the summer break. There were 47 people in attendance with entertainment from Bob McQuire, Bill Haffermehl, Bob Wiseman, Gord Laycock, Stan Gardiner and Caledonia Donahue.

Even I was suckered into singing a song, which I (jokingly) apologize to

everyone’s ears for.

On May 23 was bingo.

The winner of the halfand-half game was Cecile Ferre and the winner of the blackout game was Shelley Knorr. We’ve been having pretty good turnouts for bingo lately, which is great.

On May 27 and June 3 we had Monday Kaiser.

On the 27th, there were 11 payers with the following winners: first, Pat Turner with 287 points; second, Ann Muc with 243 points; third was Delmer Friesen with 212 points and fourth was Vera Halter with 211 points. The highest scoring game was played by Vera Halter and Pat Turner with 83 points.

On the 3rd, the winners were: Ann Muc, 1st, 214 points; Vera Halter,

2nd, 189 points; Ken Pearce, 3rd, 182 points; and Delmer Friesen, 4th, 177 points. The highest scoring game was played

by Joanne Kral and Ann Muc with 63 points.

On June 4, the New Horizons card players were also invited to Rosetown for a card tournament. We had nine players that went down and played Kaiser.

Our Cold Plate Lunch was on June 8 following the town parade.

We had a good turnout with approximately 90 people that came down for lunch.

It was once again a very successful fundraiser. I;d like to give a huge shout out to all of the volunteers that came together to make it a success.

How to grow an organic vegetable garden Growing your own vegetables is a fun and rewarding experience that can improve your health and save you money – but it does take time and care.

Plan it out. If you don’t have an existing garden space, mark the shape with string and remove your sod to expose the soil. Start off with a small space; one of the biggest mistakes firsttime gardeners make is planning an area that’s too large to maintain.

When you have success in your first attempt with a small garden, it’s easy to expand.

Pick a spot that gets as much sun as possible – you need at least six hours each day. You’ll have to water your veg-

etable and herb garden regularly, so close proximity to a water spigot is ideal, whether you use a garden hose or watering can.

Remove rocks from the soil.

Remove any rocks or debris from your soil and enrich it with at least two inches of garden soil.

This will help stimulate root growth and ensure that you get the very best produce in your garden.

Plant your vegetable or herb seedlings. Keep in mind how big your plants will grow, and make sure to space out

your garden accordingly.

Feed and water. To maximize growth, feed your garden with an organic and natural

vegetable food every two months and water as needed. Water in the early morning until the soil is moist but not soggy. Remember to keep watering as needed and remove weeds when necessary.

A celebration of Biggar and area last weekend was a bit cool, but for all who attended the annual Town and Country Fair Days, it didn’t take away from the good natured spirit and fun the festivities provided.

The parade went off without a hitch on Saturday while the fireworks were delayed one day due to high winds.

A show and shine was held on the final day with an amazing and enthusiastic attendance.

Not only did this prompt more restrictions of Internet access, it also led to another chat about false, and potentially damaging, information.

Life in today’s world is overloaded with information.

There are so many constant sources of communication in our lives nowadays that, in many cases, it is hard to know what is real and what is not. A smart man I know has got me in the habit of always asking a very simple question regarding anything: “Where are you getting your information from?”

Before getting too involved, excited, distraught, or overwhelmed with “new” information in your life, take a step back and ask yourself that very same question.

Sometimes we are too quick to react without first connecting the dots and quickly analyzing where the information is coming from. If the source of the information could be biased or unreliable,

then we need to know that first before investing our emotions any further. If it is information that you feel could be pertinent to your life or lifestyle, then further investigation is needed if the source’s reliability is questionable.

That being said, if the information is not relevant to your life or lifestyle, then don’t waste your time or energy with it.

Any information about literally anything can be filtered with this very simple question.

In the way of nutrition and making good food Chef Dez choices, there is one source that I have always trusted. Sure, there are other channels of information on this topic, but if I was to admit to which one I turn to the most for so many years, it would be Diana Steele, Registered Dietician.

How I first discovered Diana, was on nutrition segments she does on the local TV News, and she still does them. In fact, it was not long ago that I was watching her on a B.C. noon news show when I realized that it has been many years that I have been taking in advice from her. In my opinion, the tips and information she gives out are solidly reliable and none of her suggestions have ever

struck me as extreme.

In business, she has partnered up with another Registered Dietician, Adrienne Dall’Antonia and they host a Web site at eatingforenergy.com – check it out sometime.

They even have an “Ask a Dietician” feature so you can make direct inquiries about specific areas that are relevant to you.

You may not feel that you need a Dietician’s advice in your life, but let’s face it, we all eat food every day to stay alive.

Thus, any good nutritional advice will be useful to some degree.

Following a dietician does not mean that you are a “health nut” or that you have to eliminate all your bad eating habits (Lord knows I have a few of those); what it means is that you take in trusted information that will compliment your lifestyle to the degree and ways you feel is necessary and appropriate.

Let’s face it, any improvement in our eating habits is beneficial, and it just makes sense to work towards a more wellbalanced diet the best way we can . . . as long as you know where you are getting your information from.

Edward was born on the farm homestead near Cando, Sask., he was in the middle of seven children. He attended Willowfield School and Cando School.

While growing up on the family farm, Edward had a passion for farming and chose it for his career in which he did extremely well with grain and cattle.

The family knew that Edward was proud of his crops because a crop tour was a must.

He always purchased new vehicles and took you for a tour in them.

Edward always kept up with current farming practices even when he was retired.

He also kept up with current affairs and news.

His love for animals is why he had cattle in his farming operation.

He also loved nature which is why he kept the birds well fed.

When Edward was younger and in good health, he went with friends on holidays to Mexico and Hawaii and Las Vegas.

He also liked trapping and hunting and skid doing with his brother, Walter and friends Edward was always well organized and meticulous about his house and yard on the farm. It was always neat and upkept.

Family was very important to Edward, he liked helping when he could and hosting and visiting them.

Edward is survived by his siblings Margaret (James) McConaghy, Elsie Evashenko, Walter (Marlene) Sachko, Judy Hrycuik, and Jeannette (Andy) Krakowetz.; as well nephews and nieces, James McConaghy and Terry (Inga) McConaghy, Karen (Dale) Reeves.

Edward was predeceased by his parents Mary and James Sachko; his brother, David, his nephews, Neil, David and Gordon McConaghy; his two brothers-in-law, Walter Evashenko and Eli Hrycuik.

At Edward's request there will be no funeral and he will be cremated.

The family wishes to thank the Battleford Union Hospital staff on the second floor for the excellent care they gave Edward during his short stay there.

At the February Biggar and District Health Services fund raising auction, OJ and Jennifer Singer purchased a beautiful piece of art by local artist Diane Larouche Ellard of a tranquil Biggar rural scene called â&#x20AC;&#x153;Oban Lake Roadâ&#x20AC;?. The Singerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, in turn, generously donated it to the Biggar and District Health Foundation to be placed in the palliative care room in memory of OJâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dad, Ron.
