Kerrobert man facing drug and firearm charges The Kindersley/Kerrobert RCMP and the F Division Crime Reduction Team have charged a male from Kerrobert with a number of offences following the execution of a search warrant in Kerrobert.

On June 1, at around 10:30 p.m., members of the Kindersley/Kerrobert Detachment and the RCMP’s Crime Reduction Team executed a search warrant at a residence on Alberta Avenue in Kerrobert.

Officers arrested a male at the residence and further investigation lead to the discovery of two firearms, ammunition, and varying quantities of suspected methamphetamine, suspected “Shatter” which is a cannabis derivative, suspected cocaine, and other drug paraphernalia.

The accused, 36-yearold Alexander Smarch of Kerrobert, faces the following charges: 1.) Possession of a Controlled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking; 2.) Possession of a Controlled Substance: 3.) Trafficking a Controlled Substance: 4.) Possession of Illicit Cannabis:

5.) Possession of Cannabis for the Purpose of Trafficking; 6.) Possession Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000; 7.) Unsafe Storage of a Firearm; 8.) Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose; 9.) Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm (x2); 10.) Possession of a Firearm While Prohibited (X2); 11.) Possession of Ammunition While Prohibited.

Smarch was remanded into custody and appeared in Saskatoon Provincial Court on June 3.

The Saskatchewan RCMP has two permanent Crime Reduction Teams (CRTs) operating in the province. Their mandate is to overtly target known criminals, prolific offenders, and repeat offenders to reduce crime and make Saskatchewan safer. The two teams, based out of North Battleford and Prince Albert, are completely mobile and travel to areas that require assistance where community safety has been identified as a concern.

Seeding near complete for Sask.

Seeding of the 2019 crop is nearing completion, with the majority of the crop being planted this month.

Ninety-two per cent of the crop is now seeded, up from 73 per cent last week and well ahead of the five-year average (2014-18) of 83 per cent for this time of year, according to the weekly crop report for the period, May 21 to 27.

The southwest region is the most advanced, with 96 per cent of the crop in

the ground. Ninety-four per cent is seeded in the southeast, 91 per cent of the crop is seeded in the east central region, 92 per cent in the west central region, 90 per cent in the north east and 87 per cent in the north west.

Rainfall was reported this past week throughout the province, ranging from trace amounts to 75 mm in a localized area near Turtleford. Topsoil moisture conditions continue to deteriorate

across the province due to strong winds and a lack of moisture. Cropland topsoil moisture is rated as 32 per cent adequate, 48 per cent short and 20 per cent very short. Topsoil moisture on hay land and pasture is rated as 25 per cent adequate, 47 per cent short and 28 per cent very short.

Significant rain is still needed across the province to help crops emerge and for hay land and pasture to establish.

Hay and pasture growth has been slow due to little rainfall. Provincially,

pasture conditions are rated as 17 per cent good, 37 per cent fair, 32 per cent poor and 14 per cent very poor. Crop growth is delayed in much of the province, and most crops are behind their normal developmental stages for this time of year.

The majority of crop damage this past week was due to lack of moisture, frost, strong winds, hail, and insects such as flea beetles and cutworms.

Farmers are completing seeding operations and starting in-crop pesticide applications.

Sask. gov’t files notice of carbon tax appeal to Supreme Court

Last Friday, Justice Minister and Attorney General Don Morgan announced that the Government of Saskatchewan has officially filed notice of appeal with the Supreme Court of Canada.

The questions being asked of the Supreme Court of Canada are: 1.) Is the Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act unconstitutional in whole or in part?

2.) In particular, does Parliament have jurisdiction to establish minimum national standards for price stringency for greenhouse gas emissions under the national concern branch of the peace, order and good government power set

out in the opening words of section 91 of the Constitution Act, 1867?

“Our government will continue to stand up for Saskatchewan people against what we believe is an unconstitutional tax on their families, communities and businesses,” Morgan said.

“Saskatchewan’s Constitutional Law Branch filed a notice of appeal with the Supreme Court of Canada that will see our case against the carbon tax taken to the highest court of our nation.”

The Government of Saskatchewan now has a two-month window to file the province’s factum to the Supreme Court of Canada.

Eating in Biggar Dear Editor: First, I would like to say how nice it is to see that we have a few different people in town trying to improve our little community by offering a few different choices of where people can eat.

Second, it sure is a shame that a couple of the restaurants that we do have in town are complaining about it, they have had a long time to offer a service that everyone in town can go and sit down and enjoy a meal. Yet some have the same filth and dirt on the floors and bathrooms that has been in their restaurants for years and have made zero effort to improve on or clean the filth, others have probably the worst service

that can be offered as far as being pleasant or even making any effort to please the customer in a timely manner.

Now that they have a little more competition in town the only thing they can think of is to complain about the new food services that are being offered in town.

If they are so worried about what people were eating or where they were eating, why have years went by and they have still to this day not made any effort to clean these restaurant up and maybe treat people with some respect and offer a service that people can leave and say, “Man, that was a good meal and that place was sure clean,

wasn’t that waitress pleasant to deal with?

That service was sure good there we were taken care of right away.”

Well, shame on you folks that are complaining and shame on you for not trying to lure people into a nice clean eating environment, and you all know who year are as well as everyone else in town knows.

Biggar is a very nice little community but this is a perfect example of why we cannot ever accomplish anything great in this town as there are too many people who would rather bitch and complain than try to make it a better community.

The ins and outs of garage sales There are certain signs that tell you spring has arrived. Harbingers, they are called.

Daffodils blooming, calling to you to come outside with their happy, yellow faces.

Robins returning from their winter hide-a-way cheerfully greeting you each day.

Crocus pushing through the snow with their purple flowers.

In some parts of the world potholes signal the coming of spring as the ground heaves from all that winter snow.

Then . . . there are garage sales.

Yes, the annual treasure hunt for all bargains takes place in the spring.

I had a special aunt and when she was still

alive would plan visits to her Calgary home. A May visit usually meant we would spend Saturday morning scouting out garage sales. My cousin would search the ads and neighbourhood newsletters and plan a route.

Sometimes we would just drive up a street and chances are we could find a garage sale.

It has been said, “one man’s junk is another man’s treasure”. I suppose that is true but for the most part most of the junk was just junk.

Although there were a couple of instances we came across some really great “treasures”.

feine. Then they would research the sales, make a map and off they would go.

The plan was to visit a whack of homes before 10 a.m. trying to get the best deals. On slow days

when individual garage sales are held the goal is 10 or fewer homes. But, if you luck out and find a community wide garage sale or one held in an arena it may be possible

to visit 60 homes. Not for the faint of heart, I admit.

For some the strategy involves driving slowly passed the home, casing it out. First impressions are key. If nothing catches their eye or it is too cluttered, chances are they will take a pass.

If they can’t get a clear visual, then they will park and one person will check out the merchandise and report.

Once you have made a commitment, don’t buy the first item at the price marked on the tag. There is a a certain amount of haggling involved. Dare I say, even expected. It’s a game -- one that everyone (buyer and seller) expects to win.

by Delta Fay Cruickshank for the Biggar Art Group On Friday, May 24 at the Biggar Museum and Gallery, Rolf Krohn from Saskatoon put on a workshop for aspiring artists in our community. Many of the member of the Biggar Art Group were able to attend this six hour workshop over Friday night and Saturday morning. The workshop was open to the public, and a few community members attended as well to fine tune their artistic talents.

The Biggar Art Group meets every Wednesday afternoon in the gallery. They work on their projects, watch videos on how other artists do their stuff, share ideas, share advice, and they are very able to right the wrongs of the world. They are

always looking for new members. Do you have a talent you would like to devote every Wednesday afternoon too? For only $50 a year, you can be honing your skills and devoting three or four hours each week to what you really want to do in the company of others who are focussed on their art.

The art pieces of the Biggar Art Group are hung in the Biggar and

District Credit Union with the exhibits changing every three months.

Right now Michelle Danychuk is showing her magnificent portraits.

The exhibit was hung on June 3 and will be up until the end of August.

China plunges ag into turmoil In a year when summer weather forecasts at least hint at too hot and too dry a condition for crops and China has plunged the agriculture sector into a time of trade uncertainty, more bad news is hardly what producers want to hear.

But more bad news is what they have gotten.

Recent numbers released by Statistics Canada show net incomes on Canadian farms in 2018.

A decline is never positive news but it gets downright depressing and more than a little concerning when you read further and see the decline was 45 per cent, which is the larg-

est annual percentage decrease since 2006, according to Statistics Canada.

Realized net farm income - which is defined as the difference between farm cash receipts and operating expenses, minus depreciation plus income in kind dropped 45.1 per cent in 2018 to $3.9 billion, Statistics Calvin Daniels Canada numbers detailed in a recent Western Producer story.

The 2018 decline follows a 2.8 per cent decrease in 2017.

Among the suggested reasons for the dramatic

decline were rising feed, interest and labour costs together with little change in farm cash receipts.

The reasons are suggestive as to the root of the problem agriculture has long held, little control of the prices they receive for their commodities, giving them little ability to look to their market to offset rising prices on the other side of their ledger.

In most businesses there is at least some ability to pass off increasing business costs to their consumers. If it costs more to buy the ingredients for lasagna or a bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich a restaurant can inch the cost up to the consumer to cover the cost.

Farmers can’t turn to a canola oil crusher or oat processor and ask for more for their product, as farmers are price takers, not price setters.

Of course the question is now where net

incomes from farmers may go in the next 12 months.

Even if the numbers are more theory than reality, as can be the case in terms of real dollars in the bank, a decline in 2019 is obvious.

Things currently are far from ideal in terms of prospects ahead already.

There is an almost universal need for moisture across the Canadian Prairies, and we are barely into June. Timely moisture will be critical moving forward.

The China situation, and the reactions of the already wild card American president Donald Trump simply muddy the

waters in terms of trying to predict what might happen tomorrow, let alone by the time harvest 2019 is complete.

The Stats Canada numbers simply suggest farmers need a few things to fall their way soon or the situation could turn dire.

Remember to slow down around farm equipment With spring seeding underway, please be aware of slow moving farm machinery, as well as other large equipment, when travelling on Saskatchewan’s highways.

Remember, you must slow to 60 km/h when passing emergency and service vehicles parked at the side of the road with their lights flashing, including: tow trucks; police vehicles; ambulances; fire trucks; highway vehicles, including snow plows; and road

graders.

This will ensure drivers, passengers and crew members can do their jobs safely.

This is going to be a world class facility once all the construction to the building and area is completed.

They took five athletes to compete on a beautiful day. Along with the St Gab’s athletes, they had a great day of competition.

Take your barbecue chicken to the next level (NC) You have plenty of options when it comes to grilling chicken, but thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nothing like the quick, easy and truly

classy Beer Can Chicken; itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a fan favourite. This one is cooked with a lite beer, bringing to the fore

the great pilsner taste in each bite without breaking the calorie or carb bank.

Beer Can Chicken Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 1 hour 25 minutes Serves: 6 Ingredients: 1/3 cup unsalted butter, softened 1/3 cup hot sauce 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar 2 tsp Worcestershire (or soy) sauce 1 tsp salt 5-pound whole chicken 355ml can Miller Lite Directions: Preheat grill to medium heat for indirect cooking.

Combine butter, hot sauce, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce and salt. Carefully rub 1 tablespoon of mixture between the chicken breasts and skin.

Open the beer can and pour out half. Set the can on a flat surface and slide the chicken over the top so the can rests inside of the cavity but sits level with the legs. Carefully balance the chicken so it sits upright on the grill. Grill covered over indirect heat for one hour.

Melt remaining butter sauce and brush half of it over the chicken. Return the lid and cook for another 10 minutes. Remove lid, brush remaining butter over the chicken and cook for another 5 minutes. The chicken is finished when the internal temperature taken in the thigh reaches 165°F (75°C).

Carefully remove chicken from the grill, making sure not to spill the hot beer.

Allow the chicken to rest for 10 minutes, then remove the can. Carve and serve.
