Tiny Tot Nursery School had a special day for their annual graduation, May 16. The grads, in addition to celebrating their very special day, paid homage to the Rural Municipality of Biggar, Biggar EMS, Fire Fighters, RCMP, Duperow Co-op for their selfless work during the recent Argo/Duperow fire. The graduates were joined by their parents, grand-parents and siblings, plus students and staff of St. Gabriel School in attendance to celebrate the landmark day, take a moment to recognize their hard work as they get ready to move on to Grade 1.

Provincial seeding averages ahead of last year Significant seeding progress was made this past week as 38 per cent of the crop is now in the ground, ahead of the five-year average (201418) of 31 per cent for this time of year, according to the government crop report for the May 7 to 13 period.

Crops are slow to emerge due to cool conditions. Seeding is furthest advanced in the southeastern region, where 53 per cent of the crop is in the ground.

Fifty-two per cent of the crop is seeded in the southwest, with 31 per cent seeded in the eastcentral region, 32 per cent in the west-central region, 22 per cent in the northeast and 28 per cent in the northwest.

Rainfall was reported this past week throughout the province. The Nipawin area received the greatest amount, 21 millimetres. Most regions of the province need rain to help alleviate dry field conditions.

Provincially, cropland topsoil moisture is rated as one per cent surplus, 52 per cent adequate, 40 per cent short and seven per cent very short. Topsoil moisture on hay land and pasture is rated as 46 per cent adequate, 40 per cent short and 14 per cent very short. Hay and pasture growth has been slow due to little rainfall and cool conditions.

Winter wheat assessments are continuing as fields green up and temperatures rise.

Spring leg session concluding with balanced budget and a strengthening economy Premier Scott Moe is finishing the spring legislative session May 16 by highlighting the government’s balanced budget that was the right balance for Saskatchewan.

The balanced budget featured increased supports for Saskatchewan people, while managing spending to maintain economic growth and continue to provide the services Saskatchewan people expect for years to come.

“The budget fulfils our government’s threeyear plan to balance the budget, and provides the right balance for our province with no new taxes or tax increases and a boost in supports for mental health, classrooms and highway safety,” Moe said. “We are also seeing economic strength in Saskatchewan, despite the headwinds of a federal carbon tax and trade challenges, with 18,000 more fulltime jobs in the province than one year ago.”

The 2019-20 Budget included: • A sustainable plan to ensure a balanced budget this year and for the years to come; • Nearly $30 million more for targeted mental health and addictions funding; • An increase of $26 million in operating funding for Saskatchewan school divisions; • New tax credits for vol-

unteer firefighters and first responders; • Funding to begin a fiveyear Enhanced Intersection Safety Program for highway intersections; and • A focus on infrastructure with funding for preconstruction design of a new Victoria Hospital for Prince Albert, planning for a new Weyburn hospital and continued funding for school consolidation projects in Weyburn and Rosthern.

“This session, our government also took important steps in passing legislation to increase maternity leave, expand the number of cancers our firefighters and volunteer firefighters are covered for and bring Clare’s Law to Saskatchewan to help those at risk of intimate partner violence,” Moe said.

The government passed multiple pieces of legislation during the spring sitting, including: • Changes to The Saskatchewan Employment Act creating a new critically ill adult leave, expanding parental leave and adding an additional week of maternity leave; • Passing Clare’s Law, which will allow police to release information about someone’s violent or abusive past to intimate partners whose safety may be at risk; • Increasing the number of occupational diseases firefighters and volunteer

firefighters are covered for through changes to The Workers’ Compensation Act; • Legislation to allow rural municipalities, and other municipalities with populations under 500, to join regional police services; • Legislation that better balances the rights of rural land owners and members of the public in accessing rural property; and • Creating a paid job leave option for survivors of interpersonal and sexual violence to take up to five paid days and five unpaid days off to seek supports or services.

During the spring session, Moe also continued to stand up for Saskatchewan on the national stage in the fight against the federal carbon tax and pushing for help for canola farmers facing trade barriers with China.

“The work our government is doing to keep Saskatchewan issues front and centre, both here at home and in Ottawa, will not stop over the coming months,” Moe said. “We will always advocate for our industries that provide the means to keep Saskatchewan strong and continue our opposition to the Trudeau Carbon Tax, including fighting the carbon tax in the Supreme Court of Canada.”

Either it’s meat or it isn’t Meatless Meat. How is that even possible? The product is either meat or it is not.

Meat as defined in the dictionary is “the flesh of an animal as used for food.” Of course the edible part of a fruit or nuts is also defined as meat.

However, calling something meatless meat just isn’t right. It is not about your choice of diet -- choosing a vegan diet can be very healthy. If you want a substitute for meat that’s great.

If you want the taste and texture of meat, just eat meat. Serving man made substitutes and calling it the same thing is just fooling yourself.

I’m sure every rancher or livestock producer will agree. Meat is meat. It cannot be “meatless.”

Comic books still popular today Stan Lee said, “The experience of reading a printed comic book will never change, but now, thanks to the digital age, there are many different ways to enjoy the same story. Digital comic books, of course, can be interactive in many different ways, allowing the reader to feel like a participant in the story.”

A comic book is defined as being “a publication that consists of comic art in the form of sequential panels that represent individual scenes, often accompanied by descriptive prose and written narrative.”

I originally thought that comic books only came about somewhere between 1940 and 1960 but that is not true. It

was in 1842 that The Adventures of Mr. Obadiah Oldbuck was printed in hardcover. This is the first known American prototype comic book.

Prototype comic periodicals, as they were called, are considered to be the first true American comic book. The 36 page edition of Famous Funnies: A Carnival of Comics is one of the first according to historians.

The rise of comic books is divided into three eras.

It’s probably why some comic books are extremely valuable today.

The first appearances of popular characters that have endured over the years, plus the fact that they are rare makes comic books some of the most valued collectibles ever. The first appearance of Superman comic book sold for over $1 million U.S. in 2010. Of course, the condition of the book contributes greatly to the value.

The original artwork is often returned to the artists who will sell them at conventions or at art galleries. The original pieces of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and Spiderman are considered priceless.

Preserving this medium is perhaps why the comic book industry has dedicated the first Saturday in May as Free Comic Book Day. On this day, participating comic book stores give away specially printed copies of free comic books.

Some may offer other specials or will maybe have artist signings. In the first six years of the event, more than 2,000 retailers in more than 30 countries gave away more than 12 million special edition comic books.

While academics may shake their heads, it is clear that comic books are very popular. And are likely to remain so for a long time.

Whitey the Swede Y.T. happened to be in Toronto on his way to a regimental reunion, and was staying with a friend when we took an evening stroll along the boardwalk along the lake.

It was a fine evening and as we reminisced about our time together suddenly a voice near us yelled out, “Hello, Bob Mason.”

We were almost shocked. I knew very few people in Toronto but we looked up and there was a fine, well dressed young man and a fine

looking woman at his side standing there. He was a very distinguished looking guy, and the two of them were wearing the nicest clothes.

I stared at the button of the lapel of the well fitted suit he was wearing, then I looked up at his hair.

“Whitey,” I yelled as I Bob Mason grasped his hand.

Very politely he introduced his wife, but polite or not, it was Whitey the Swede.

They greeted us formally.

“Let’s go into Nick’s Tea House and talk for

“Rosie and I are on our way to meet our company president.”

We went into Nick’s Tea House and sad down.

“Good heavens, Whitey,” I said. “Where have you been for the last 20 years? I’d know that head of hair anywhere.”

“Well,” he said.

“Like everyone else, we got dried out in Great Bend during the Depression. The war came along and I joined up with the Medical Corps, where I met Rosie. We came home and I fell in with an investment crowd and

Summer blackouts – what you need to know during impromptu thunderstorms (NC) While most of us hope for nothing but sun and fun this time of year, the warm weather inevitably brings with it at least one severe thunderstorm and power outage.

Whether it catches you at home or the cottage, it’s important to understand the best ways to protect your property and family.

Be proactive. Make sure your home is ready before there is a threat. Trim dead branches and cut down dead trees to reduce the danger of these falling onto your house during a storm.

Clean gutters, drains and downpipes. Make sure your roof is in good repair and prepare an emergency plan and kit.

Check the forecast.

When a severe storm is on the horizon, Environment Canada will issue weather warnings. Pay attention to this information. Always check the weather forecast before heading out on the water and do not go boating in a storm.

Get prepared. Secure

everything that might be blown around or torn loose, both indoors and out. Flying objects such as garbage cans and lawn furniture can

injure people and damage property.

Consider going to the sheltered area that you and your family have identified in your emergency plan.

Be smart with power.

Turn off all tools, appliances and electronic

equipment, and turn the thermostat down to minimum to prevent damage from a power surge when power is restored. Don’t open your freezer or fridge unless absolutely necessary.

A full freezer will keep food frozen for 24 to 36

hours if the door remains closed.

Take shelter. If you are inside during a storm, stay away from windows, doors and fireplaces. You can use a cellular or cordless telephone during a severe storm, but it is not safe to use a corded telephone.

If you are in a car, stop it away from trees or power lines that might fall on you. Avoid the base of steep or unstable slopes and low areas prone to flooding. Stay inside the car.

The kid who mixed old horse manure in his dad’s “Old Chum” tobacco cans, and then claimed his dad didn’t know the difference. The kid who did . . . everything wrong!What happened to him, eh? He sure is part of this old man’s memory anyway.

Whatever happened when Perk and Y.T. finished our walk along the beach.

Our pictorial history will be here for a long time yet

by Delta Fay Cruickskank for the Biggar Museum and Gallery On the east side of the museum is a mural. This mural depicts the growth of the town of Biggar and the rural municipality.

This mural was painted in 1997 by Gus Froese, the same artist that did the murals in Moose Jaw and in other places in Saskatchewan.

In 2013, we moved the mural. It was originally on the south side of the building, and it had faded to a big, pink image. So, with funds generously donated by private individuals here in Biggar, Michaela Hoppe refurbished it and

we got it moved to the east side.

For six years there it was, greeting visitors, we ate our pancakes and burger under it and waited for the hay ride under it. But, alas, 16 years of being in the south, ravaged by the Prairie sunshine and wind had done irreparable damage to the wood it was originally painted on. The paint started to flake, what to do. We did not want to lose this precious work of art.

One day, one of our board members suggested we could take photos of it and then have it put on metal sheets . .

. let’s ask around. Sure enough, we found a local business who had the equipment to accommodate the four feet by eight feet, times 11 sheets we needed. A local photographer offered to take the photos as a donation to the museum, and now our new mural is on the east wall, ready to tell many, many more years the story of Biggar’s history.

Please come by, and maybe bone up some of the history of Biggar, as depicted on the mural . . . maybe we could have a quiz on the mural next time you are here for a burger or a pancake.

When you are outside, protect yourself: Wear sunglasses or a hat – not only do they look good and block the sun, they also help keep pollen off your body and out of your eyes.

Cover up when being active outside: If you are doing outdoor activities like cutting the lawn or gardening, consider

wearing a mask or scarf to cover your nose and mouth.

Protect yourself from pollen: We carry a lot of pollen into the home with us. Wash your bedding more frequently during spring, summer and fall; keep your windows closed and remember your pets can track pollen into the house, too.

Find the right product: Your pharmacist can be your first line of defense.

Staff changes taking place at LAS next year Principal’s Message

by Leanne Gruending May is here and that means it’s time to start thinking about wrapping

up the current year and thinking ahead to next year.

There’s a lot on the go.

To start off with some staffing information -- LAS will be reduced by .7FTE of a teacher for the 2019/20 school year. Ms. Jen Mason also received an increase to her Early Years Learning Facilitator work at Division Office, which means Jen will only be at LAS for Pre-K in the mornings.

The reduction in teaching staff will look like Tyler Munday transferring to Martensville High. Tyler has taught many things over the years at Lord Asquith School, but is likely best known for being the gym

teacher. Melissa Bachmeier will also be starting her maternity leave at the end of June. This will be Melissa’s second baby and her leave will continue through most, or possibly all, of next school year.

B.C. media reports indicate about 50 protesters from a group called Meat the Victims entered the barn at Excelsior Hog Farms and occupied it for a short period before being removed by police.

More than 100 others protested on a nearby road.

Golf for beginners

Golf has seen an upswing in the number of people interested in getting started with the game.

Millions of people hit the links to play golf recreationally, and many young stars of the game are inspiring others to try their hand at this difficult sport.

There has never been a better time to play golf. However, to the uninitiated, golf can be complicated. There are many different rules and all sorts of equipment to learn and lingo to follow.

In fact, some experts say that some people can be

scared off even before they hit the green. Fortunately, all it takes is a little research to get started on learning about and ultimately embracing the game of golf. Here are six ways to get started.

1. Start off on a practice range and not on the golf course. The range is a great place to acclimate oneself to the game and practice your swings.

2. Hook up with someone who can show you the ropes. Going it alone

can tame feelings of embarrassment from being new to the game.

However, having someone in your corner guiding you can make it easier to learn and love the game. Work with a local golf pro or enlist the help of a friend or family member with some golfing experience.

3. Learn all you can about the clubs, including which kinds are used for various types of

shots. While a golfer is allowed to carry as many as 14 clubs in a bag, you will not need that many when first starting out, nor do you have to invest thousands of dollars in a set of clubs. It’s possible to find used clubs online if you want to try the sport before committing.

4. Lean toward more loft when selecting clubs.

Look for drivers that have at least 10 degrees of loft and fairway woods that start at 17 degrees.

This will make it easier for beginners to get the ball into the air and can reduce sidespin so shots fly more straight.

5. Pay attention to short shots as well as the long ones. Spend as much time practicing with wedges and the putter as the driver to really tighten up all of your shots.

6. Learn the proper grip and stance by working with a coach. Invest in a glove to avoid callused hands, as you’ll be spending significant time practicing.

With these tips, novice golfers can get on the road to developing a great golf game relatively quickly.

What to do when you receive an emergency alert (NC) Thanks to previous tests and a few real emergencies, most of us are familiar with Canada’s public alerting system – known as Alert Ready. But you may not know what these alerts mean or what to do when you receive one.

Alert Ready delivers critical and potentially life-saving alerts through television, radio and LTE-connected and compatible wireless devices.

Only authorized government agencies can issue alerts.

Together, government officials developed a specific list of the types of situations that pose a threat to life and prop-

erty, for which alerts should be distributed immediately. These emergency alerts have the highest level of severity, urgency and certainty such as tornado warnings, wildfires or Amber Alerts.

Public tests of the Alert Ready System are anticipated to happen twice a year. The first would take place during Emergency Preparedness Week in May and the second in November.

It’s important to know that not all Canadians will receive the alert on their phone for a variety of reasons: • The phone is turned off, in silent or airplane

mode; • The phone is not physically in the specific area targeted for the alert; • The phone is not compatible or connected to an LTE network; • There is no cell tower coverage; or • Device software and settings are not optimally set-up to receive alerts.

If you receive an emergency alert, it’s important to take action safely.

Stop what you’re doing when it is safe to do so and read the alert. The message will tell you the information you need and guidance for any action you are required to take. This could

include limiting unnecessary travel, evacuating the area and seeking shelter.

OBITUARIES

Evelyn Carol Dnistransky (nee Rebalkin) passed away May 15, 2019, in the Rosetown Hospital. Mom was born on March 1, 1941 in Saskatoon and grew up on the farm near Langham.

She was the oldest of three sisters. She graduated from Teachers College in Saskatoon with her first teaching job being in a one room school near Borden.

When she moved to a new job teaching in Arelee, she met her husband Everett Dnistransky. They were married August 16, 1963 and farmed in the Sonningdale area where Evelyn enjoyed being involved in the community. They had two daughters; Wendy (Wes) Davis and Tracey Caldwell; two grand-daughters; Kasey (Cam) Johnston and Mallory (Matt) Dubois and her beloved great grandchildren; Sawyer, Mira and Jack., Evelyn is survived by her daughters, Wendy (Wes) Davis and Tracey Caldwell; her sisters Shirley (Don) Leonard and Joyce (Jim) Olzewski; nephews David (Julie) Stahl; Jaret Stahl and Scott (Jill) Olzewski; niece, Teresa (Derek) Wasylenchuk; cousins, Ruby Panamaroff and Sandra Hunchak; aunts Tina Kudryk and Anne Rebalkin.

Evelyn was predeceased by her parents, William and Helen Rebalkin; and her husband of 36 years, Everett Dnistransky.

One bad decision… a life forever changed Imagine climbing into a vehicle after a night of partying with your friends. You drift off to sleep. Later, you wake up, on your stomach in a ditch, and you can’t feel your legs.

In May 2010, that happened to Nolan Barnes.

After a night of drinking and drug use in Saskatoon, Nolan was a passenger in an SUV driven by an impaired driver.

While en route back to Yorkton, the vehicle crashed, killing Nolan’s friend and injuring eight passengers.

Nolan’s injuries were the most severe. His back was shattered and his collarbone was broken.

Following the crash, Nolan endured surgery, two weeks in an induced coma, two months in hospital, followed by many more months of rehab. He had to learn how to navigate life in a wheelchair.

“When we talk about impaired driving, the focus is often on the

people who are killed; but impaired driving also injures – often very seriously -- hundreds of people in Saskatchewan every year,” said Minister Responsible for SGI Joe Hargrave. “For the people who are injured – and their families -- the impacts are devastating and long-lasting. Sometimes, they’re forever.”

In the hopes of convincing others to make better choices than he did, Nolan regularly shares his story at schools, corporate events and SADD conferences. He speaks to people with brutal honesty, sparing no detail about living as a paraplegic, and the impact his choices made on him and the people who care about him.

“I used to think I was invincible. Then I found out that I wasn’t,” Nolan said. “Hopefully, hearing what I have to say will keep someone else from making the same mistake.”

Nearly 6,600 people

Nolan in hospital after accident have been injured in impaired driving collisions over the last 10

years in Saskatchewan.

While the number of injuries has continually

trended downward over the past decade, there were still 368 people

injured from impaired driving collisions on Saskatchewan roads in 2017.
