Arts Council increases shows for 2019/20 season With the Biggar and District Arts Council performance season at a close, the upcoming concert year will prove to be as exciting as the last.

With eight concerts last year, Arts Council members have added a ninth for the new show season.

It all begins this October 2 with Jeffery Straker and Friends. Straker, who has appeared in Biggar in the past other Saskatchewan performers to the Majestic in the form of guitar virtuoso and talented songwriter, Jack Semple, with folk singer-songwriter and Western Canadian music award winner, Annette Campagne.

Following quickly on the heals of the opener, Earle and Coffin, a Newfoundland and Labrador acoustic blues/roots duo hit the Majestic Theatre, October 26. Showcased throughout Canada, the pair have been receiving critical recognition, being awarded a Canadian Folk Music Award, a Music NL (Newfoundland/Labrador) Blues/ Jazz Artist of the Year, in addition to other acclaim for their soulful vocals and brilliant guitar work.

November 22 has The Johnny McQuaig Band at the Biggar Community Hall for their traditional East Coast jigs mixed with modern rock music. Unique and boisterous, the Band rocks up old standards, breathing new life and energy to the stalwart tunes. Fun and engaging, they take their music seriously, but have fun and engage with the audience with humour and party attitude.

Country music star Blake Reid hits the Majestic in the new year on January 16. In the great traditions of country music and great storytelling, Reid incorporates folk, roots, red dirt, swamp, bluegrass, Americana, rock and roll and more, staying true to the story.

Something a little different . . . Chris Funk The Wonderist brings his slight of hand to the Majestic, January 31.

Funk’s magic show is an engaging and emotional show that will leave audiences agape. You’ll laugh and be in awe as Funk brings a sense of wonder to the Majestic stage.

Madison Violet comes to the Majestic, March 5. The award-winning folk/Americana duo have been nominated for a Juno and are releasing an album in 2019. Having toured worldwide, Madison Violet brings exceptional playing to Biggar.

Christine Tassan et les Imposteures have made their marks on the music scene. The four female musicians blend Gypsy jazz with cover songs, mixing Django Reinhardt, Felix Leclerc and American swing composers - an ode to musical freedom and creativity.

Trevor Panczak hits the Majestic, April 22. The Alberta Country Music Award nominated artist presents his country show to Biggar, presenting songs that speak to the heart. A solid rep in the music world, Panczak is a singer/songwriter with deep, humble farm roots that provide the foundation of an incredible show.

The final show number nine! - is The Fitzgeralds, May 8. The family group hits the Majestic with fiddle and step dance wonderment.

Renown for their high energy, The Fitzgeralds include Celtic fiddle pieces with original compositions and arrangements.

Mind-blowing step dancing, audience interaction and a deep love of performing, The Fitzgeralds will be a perfect end to the nine-show 2019/20 season.

Biggar artist received national attention . . . St. Gabriel School student, Samantha Patica received recognition from Royal Canadian Legion Command in Ottawa that her colour poster in the Intermediate category was the second place winner in this year’s National Poster Literary Contest. To win at this high level, Samantha competed against thousands of other entries from across the country, and for her efforts, she received $250. CORRECTION: Last week’s Independent on Page 12 “Big Effort for Biggar Fire” misidentified D’Shae Bussiere as Shay Dorosh. Biggar Council Minute highlights The regular meeting of Biggar Town Council was held March 19, at 7:15 p.m. in the Council Chambers. Attending the meeting were Mayor Ray Sadler, Aldermen Alan Boyle, Penny McCallum, Kevin McNicholls, Edward Young, and Ivan Young.

Council resolved that the following financial reports for February 2019 be accepted as presented: Bank Reconciliation; Statement of Financial Activities.

Council resolved that the General Accounts Paid in the amount of $161,330.17, and the General Accounts Payable in the amount of $58,726.54, be approved.

Council resolved that the following correspondence be accepted for Council’s information and filed: Kelly Block,

Council resolved that they agree that the fixed farm land agreement for the northeast quarter, Section 7-36-14 W3, comprising of 160 acres of land, be renewed beginning January 1, 2019 and ending December 31, 2020. Also, the fixed farm land agreement for the southwest Section 32-35-14 W3, comprising of 32.88 acres of land, also be renewed beginning Janu-

ary 1, 2019 and ending December 31, 2020.

Council resolved that the Biggar Town and Country Fair Committee be granted $500 of financial support toward the fireworks show at the fair in June.

Council resolved that correspondence from P. Machibroda Engineers regarding the Corrective Action Plan be reviewed and further that Council enter into an agreement for the Corrective Action Plan and remediation engineering services at a cost of $18,015 plus GST. Council resolved that invoice No. J000281, payable to Impact Energy Services, in the amount of $55,015.72 dated February 28, 2019 for services at the water treatment plant, be approved for payment.

Administration proceed to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) for funding from the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) over the years of 2019-2024 for the following projects: • Replacement of 11 blocks of water and sewer mains and all associated works such as curbs, sidewalks and asphalt paving.

• Extension of waterworks along First Avenue, then south to cross the CN railway tracks and Highway 4 to provide services to an RM Commercial Park and other commercial businesses within the Town limits located south of the tracks.

• Expansion of the STP. • Replacement of wells.

Taxing people is not always the answer

Environment Canada recently commissioned a report on the study of Canada’s plastics industry -- an industry that generates $35 billion a year. The report noted that only nine per cent of plastics are recycled.

The report noted that secondary (or recycled) plastics cost more and therefore are less appealing financially. Manufacturers find it more economical to produce new plastic products.

Everyone will agree nine per cent is pretty low.

And, yes there is room for improvement.

Ottawa’s answer to the problem is to propose a tax or fee on what it calls virgin resins. These resins are used to make new plastic products. In their minds that will raise the price of new plastics and put them on an even footing with the recycled products; therefore more people will buy recycled plastics.

The report also said that such a plastic tax would lead to higher consumer prices. However, it is not concerned about what that will do to family budgets or increases to small business.

Ottawa doesn’t seem to care about that.

Let’s be clear. This is the same logic that was used to impose a carbon tax. The higher the tax on gas the less people will drive therefore saving the environment.

Instead, let’s examine why plastics are not being recycled. Is it the process? Is it the collection of used plastics? Is it the paperwork? What exactly drives the cost of recycling and are there other options.

Is there some technology that could bring the cost down?

There needs to be some more investigation into the industry and the reasons. Let’s come up with some proactive and constructive solutions to the recycling problem rather than just taxing Canadians.

However, there are bright spots as all my colleagues know. There are readers who make your day just by stopping in to say “hello”.

Every community has its fair share of characters and there are some very appreciative readers.

son for the Biggar Independent is Bob Mason.

Bob is a World War II veteran serving in the Argyll’s (better known as The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, a line infantry regiment of the British Army that existed from 1881 until amalgamation into the Royal Regiment of Scotland on 28 March 2006). He wears many hats having worked at a potash mine, farmer, poet and author. His poems were compiled in a self published book and since 1997 he has been writing a weekly column in The Independent, never missing an issue. When Bob turned 80 he brought a column into the office one day and said, “This is to be printed as close to May 8, 2019 as possible. That is the day I turn 100”.

What a responsibility for any newspaper publisher and staff to shoulder!

That column has been sitting in our safe for 20 years. When we moved that was on our priority list and we made sure it was not lost.

Bob’s family held a birthday party for him on May 4 and the room was filled with over 200 well wishers. One of them remarked, “Bob touched a lot of lives.” And we were pleased and privi-

leged to be part of his.

Bob still writes columns for The Independent. His eye sight has diminished so his family made him a special table -- one with a glass top and a light underneath.

They take the time to draw dark lines on sheets of paper and a family member then takes the columns home and rewrites them so they are easy for us to read. We still print them and will continue to do so for as long as possible.

These are the people that make the life of a weekly newspaper publishing so rewarding -ordinary people who are very remarkable.

Only a few years ago Mr. Spock “beamed� some of his space travellers up thru the air and Longfellow wrote about a squirrel named Adjidomo two hundred years before. What is “progress� coming to anyway?

This Adj thing had me stumped until a short while ago. I think I spelled Adjidomo right.

Anyone who doesn’t think this should contact some of the cell phone people in Biggar Health Centre.

As for Adjidomo, just contact Longfellow.

I looked all over to get that AJ bit and mebbe I will get a letter from Longfellow’s boys telling me of my mistake. Oh well. The editors will let it go as a writer’s privilege.

You’d think that with all the knowledge and know how available today, that a knowledgeable guy (Y.T.) wouldn’t have much trouble finding a word to put after the “A� of April. But they just don’t come when Y.T. tries his hardest to get one.

So, we just have to settle for “A�. Somehow the first one I could think of was one of my earliest schoolmates, AKA “Whitey the Swede�. We’’ll never forget “Whitey�.

I’m sure that over the years Y.T. has mentioned him before (even the AKA part).

There have been many people, AKA, in a lifetime, and some of them are kind of hard to forget, but Whitey was the most popular one that Y.T. ever knew. I sure never thought that he could come up with “anything� let alone as an AKA, but there he is . . . AKA. Pretty good, eh?

A I Airplane 1933: What a thrill it was for little Walter and I to see a plane come through a cloud formation and land in our hayfield near the house.

It was completely overcast Bob Mason and there was only one clear spot overhead. the pilot, named Kaldur, and his passenger walked over to our house and called Battleford to let them know one of the first animal trips was going to be late.

Were we ever thrilled.

Mother was a little embarrassed because we didn’t have a big meal for them. Judge Ouseley (a Circuit Court Judge) was with Kaldur. We looked for that plane whenever it went over on its Battleford to Saskatoon run and it always dropped its wings. The first real plane that we had ever

When we were going some road construction up north, one of the men on our crew was from Atakakoop Reserve, and his wife was the school teacher there.

She often drove him to work.

One day they asked me if I knew of anyone who had puppies. In Perdue our dog had just born three little puppies. Early one morning when I was going to work on a Monday, I wrapped one of them inside my coat and gave it to him for her and he told me his kids all loved the puppy and that

Asquith Town council held its May regular council meeting on May 8.

Attending were Mayor Gail Erhart, Councillors Dylan Claypool, Harold Edwards, Jordan Claypool, Ted Goodnough, and Jeff Eide. Also attending was CAO Holly Cross, Administrative Assistant Kathy Picketts and Foreman Darren Kraft.

The meeting was called to order at 7 p.m.

A resolution was made to accept the council minutes from the April 10 regular council meeting.

Council made a motion to accept the April financial and April bank reconciliations as presented to them at the meeting.

Accounts paid in the amount of $26,785.91 and accounts payable of $68,467.65 were accepted as presented.

Street sweeping occurred in Town at the end of April. It was nice to get some of the dirt and grit off the streets.

Now we just need a good cleansing rain to brighten everything up.

Two building permits were issued within the Town of Asquith for the building of decks.

There was a water break in the 600 block of Cory Street; it has been repaired.

April was a very dry month and a very busy month for our dedicated volunteer fire department and first responders.

Fire bans are on until such a time that we have received a significant amount of moisture to negate the fire danger.

Speaking of the Fire Department, the Asquith Fire Department and First Responders are holding their annual Pig Roast/Show & Shine/ Street Dance in Asquith at the Elks Hall in June.

The day promises to be a fun filled one, with lots for all ages to enjoy.

There will be a bouncy castle set up for the little ones, and other activities. As always, there will be an auction held as a fund raiser after the supper. This has proven to be a fun, raucous time.

Of course, there is the street dance afterwards.

Remember that our emergency services in our community consists entirely of volunteers.

These funds that they raise go towards bettering their equipment that is

used to potentially save one of our lives in the event of a motor vehicle accident or save a property from burning to the ground. We all have a vested interest in ensuring that they have the best equipment that they need to provide these services. Support our local AFD and FR. Councillor Dylan Claypool and Councillor Ted Goodnough attended a SREDA meeting. There was much useful discussion and it was interesting to hear what other communities are doing.

The Town of Asquith will host a SREDA meeting in November.

Councillor Ted Goodnough also attended a SUMA workshop in Prince Albert. The topic was Workplace Harmony. He reported that

it was a very educational and interesting seminar.

Spring is now well upon us, and individuals are doing spring cleaning around their houses and businesses.

A reminder to all that there will be a Spring Cleanup Weekend on May 25 and 26 with Loraas Recycle bins available for taxpayers to use. The old landfill will be open for Clean Waste Days that same weekend, for individuals to deposit their tree branches, leaves, grass clippings, clean wood (non painted/non treated wood). For more dates that the town will be holding a Clean Waste Day please contact the Asquith Town Office.

It was not that long ago Canadian producers were nearly crushed as this country fought for market share with the coffers of the United States and the European Union literally buying market share via subsidies to buyers, and dollars to their producers.

The world had seemed to evolve past such craziness with numerous free trade deals inked between countries, most notably in Canada the initial North American Free Trade Agreement.

The basic premise of free trade is simple at its heart, countries that excel at the production of an agricultural product should have access to markets without mounts of tariffs impeding such trade.

For a country such as Canada that is an important concept because producers here are good at production, and exporting product is essential.

But governments are again starting to muddy the waters of such trade with policies that are purely political in nature.

In part, no doubt, the change is being fostered by a more protectionist

attitude, which we see south of the 49th parallel under American president Donald Trump.

And of course there is the startling decision by the United Kingdom to leave the European Union, a decision that will have effects rippling well into the future

APAS pleased with passage of updated civil trespass legislation The Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan is pleased with the passage of provincial civil trespass legislation.

“Producers have been facing growing risks around biosecurity, and we need more control over who can access our land,” APAS President Todd Lewis stated. “The potential economic and environmental costs to our industry from the spread of disease and invasive pests are considerable. Having a consistent set of rules for agricultural land access is very welcome.”

Lewis pointed to the growing incidence of clubroot In Saskatchewan, which is a disease that

affects canola and other plants in the brassica family.

“The spread of a soilborne disease like clubroot is a major risk to our most important cash crop In Saskatchewan. It can be spread by hunters, recreational vehicle users, contractors or anyone accessing our property,” Lewis explained. “Once the disease is established, the affected producer is unable to grow canola for the next 15-20 years. The risk to our farms and to our provincial economy is too great to ignore.”

Soil-borne biosecurity risks include weed seeds, bacteria, spores, prions, viruses and other pathogens. Lewis added that

other risk factors include the spread of animal diseases and weed species. Those key risks are spores (Clubroot, Root Rot, Black Leg); bacteria (Anthrax, Botulism); prions (Chronic Wasting Disease including Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy); soil-borne viruses.

“Anything that can travel on a vehicle, or a piece of equipment, or even a clump of mud on a pair of boots, poses a potential threat to our livelihoods,” Lewis concluded.

“Producers need to have the right to control those risks, and this legislation provides a uniform and consistent approach that requires our consent to access our property.”

Trust the Reliable Butcher Whenever I make meatballs or burger patties from scratch, an ingredient that I always use is ground chuck.

Ground Chuck is not the typical ground beef you can easily find at any major grocery store – it can only be found at butcher shops. It has a higher fat content and a much beefier flavour; a secret ingredient among chefs you could say.

My regular favourite butcher is about 10 kilometres away from my house.

Recently however, I needed ground chuck and I was in a bit of a hurry, so I decided to go to a closer, unfamil-

iar butcher shop instead.

The first thing I noticed was that there were a lot of empty spots in the refrigerated display case, and thus not a lot of selection.

A woman walked out from the back and greeted me.

I couldn’t see any ground chuck in the display case, so I asked, “do you have any Chef Dez ground chuck?”

She looked puzzled.

“Ground chuck? What is that?” she replied.

I was dumbfounded. I didn’t know what to say.

“Every butcher shop has ground chuck” I answered with the first thing that came to mind.

She quickly apologized and informed me that she was a new employee there. She then proceeded to get someone else to help me. Another woman appeared from the back only to advise me that they don’t have ground chuck. Considering the lack of selection of meats on display, I wasn’t surprised, but still disappointed. I left the store muttering to myself “how can a butcher store not have ground chuck?”

This has never happened to me before.

I got in my vehicle and drove the 10 kilometres to my regular butcher.

As I walked into their store I was immediately greeted with a warm welcome from an employee and the aromas from their onsite kitchen embraced my senses like a welcoming friend.

I proceeded to the butcher display case and not only was it fully stocked with ground chuck, but also every kind of meat and seafood that I could ever imagine getting locally.

I smiled and quickly came to the realization that I should have just trusted my instincts and came here in the first place. I was quickly greeted again, and my order of ground chuck was fulfilled immediately.

I think that as consumers, we don’t fully realize what it takes to run a successful business, especially one that deals in perishables. There is so much training and ongoing fine tuning of inventory levels to make sure that the needs of consumers

are met and at the same time making sure that little is wasted. When you walk into a store and they are fully stocked with whatever you need, there’s a level of comfort and value within that.

The ease of getting what you want with great selection and feeling welcome is the perfect shopping experience in my mind.

The one thing I learned from this, more than anything else, is to trust these types of businesses that go the extra mile for the consumer, even if it means travelling a farther distance to get there.

The pleasant and satisfying experience was well worth my time and effort.

In closing, please support your local butcher (or any other business) that goes out of their way for an amazing shopping experience.

New Horizons has a busy couple of weeks The last couple weeks at New Horizons we had a number of events.

On May 3, St. Gabriel School had a Soup and Pie Lunch in the hall. It was very well attended and the food was delicious.

On May 8 we had our 46th Annual Meeting.

There was a small turnout but everything went smoothly.

On May 9 the school district used New Horizons as the venue for their P.A.R.T.Y Program presentation to the Grade 10 students from Biggar and the surrounding towns. We also had a bingo in the basement on the 9th. The winner of the half and half game was Pat Turner and the

winner of the blackout game was a three-way tie between Shelly Knorr, Linda Vermette and Evelyn Poletz.

We had kaiser on April 29 and May 6. On the 29th there were eight players with the following winners: first, Isla Solanik with 220 points; second, Linda Vermette with 209 points; third, Ann Muc with 195 points and fourth, Vera Halter with 162 points. The highest scoring game was played by Isla Solanik and Pat Turner with 68 points.

On the 6th there were also eight players. First place winner, Marie Roesch with 218 points; second, Ann Muc with 202 points; third, Joyce

Colbert with 193 points; fourth, Pat Turner with 191 points. The highest scoring game was played

by Ann Muc and Isla Solanik with 57 points.

A number of our activities have wrapped up for the season and will resume in the fall including seniors bowling at the Bowling Alley, Wednesday kaiser, Jam Session and Stitching Club. Activities that continue throughout the summer include exercises, Monday kaiser, Friday card parties, birthday potluck and bingo. Activity calendars are available at New Horizons if anyone is interested in coming to our activities.
