Operation Santa says thank you! Asquith is a caring town, full of good neighbours. The community of Asquith has proved it by their tremendous response to Operation Santa! Groceries, toys, knitted mitts and toques and cash donations were received, allowing Operation Santa to make Christmas and grocery hampers. Maple Leaf, thanks to Doug and Crystal Haugrud, made up meat hampers. Coca-Cola, thanks to Candace Dirkzwager, donated pop and juices This year we provided hampers and groceries to 15 family units, in which

there were 22 children. People who received the hampers have expressed thanks again and again. You met a physical need and touched many hearts! Money received went directly to the hampers and was spent at local merchants. We hope that the spirit of “Operation Santa will be a continuing success in 2019. Asquith and the surrounding area is a wonderful community and we thank you for your help and support in helping Christmas be a little bit brighter for many in our community!

A look back at 2018 Stopping to take stock of the events of the past year is the usual custom at this time of year. Reflecting on the past and the year’s events can be humbling and exhilarating at the same time. As I look over the columns of 2018 they are a mix of events and seasonal information. Writing a column every week stretches the brain. Formulating a topic and then researching that same topic provides for some interesting reading along the way. Let’s face it, sometimes writers block creeps in. Some authors call it “muse”. January started out with Robert Burns and snowmen. The Scots celebrate the birthday of one of their most famous poets, Robbie Burns on January 25. The presentation of the haggis is the highlight of any Burns evening. This is the heart of the winter season. Cold temperatures and heavy snowfall is not unusual. This was written in the January 15 column. “The winter of 1794-95 record-

February came along and with it Valentines Day - the day of chocolate and flowers and romance. The column on the 12th is all about the beverage -- hot chocolate. The Mayans were the first to serve this delightful drink. Or should I say medicinal drink as there are some who claim that Peggy Hasein hot chocolate can cure liver and stomach diseases. Maya Angelou was a black civil rights activist and author. She published seven autobiographies, three books of essays; several books of poetry and whenever I need a quote it seems Angelou always tops the list. Here’s a goodie, “If you are always trying to be normal, you will never know how amazing you can be.” In April we waited and waited for spring to arrive. It never really did in 2018. So, the only option was to write a column about keeping your sense of humour. A good hearty laugh helps to relax the body. It relieves physical tension by relaxing your muscles for up to 45 minutes after. So, if you are feeling down, permit yourself a good hearty belly laugh and see if that changes your outlook. May was abuzz with news about the Royal Wedding. So, it was appropriate that there should be some mention of that. Two columns focused on flowers used in royal wedding bouquets, in particular the sprig of

Neighbourly News

ed some of the coldest temperatures ever. January of that year saw -21 degrees C in London. The cold began on Christmas Eve and lasted until late March. Again the Thames froze, as did the Severn. The French army took advantage of conditions and tried to invade the Netherlands using the frozen rivers. The Dutch were hampered by the fact that its fleet was stuck in the harbor.”

myrtle. The flowers are rather pretty -- fragrant, white, fluffy flowers. The berry is round and purple black in colour. The leaves are glossy and pointed and give off a fragrant aroma when crushed. Another flower used quite often is lily of the valley. This flower is also the birth flower of May. It is an extremely invasive and poisonous plant but very, very pretty. June . . . and summer finally came. It was barbecue season. Time to get out the hotdogs. Now we go from June into July. A time when the lazy days of summer roll around. Lake season or pool season whatever your choice. Canada Day and time to test your knowledge of Canada with a few citizenship questions. Three oceans border Canada -- Atlantic, Arctic and Pacific. Sam Steele was a frontier hero, a proud Mountie and soldier of the Queen who contributed to our history. July is also baseball season. Babe Ruth said, “Baseball was, is and always will be to me the best game in the world.” And Yogi Berra said, “Love is the most important thing in the world, but baseball is pretty good, too.” Both these great players agree with a large number of fans. It is estimated that every year 56,000,000 attend major league baseball games. At this time of year Farmers Markets are in full swing. In August National Farmers Market Week was celebrated. Whether it be indoors or outdoors,

booths, stalls or tents the atmosphere will reflect the culture of the community and the

local economy. The size may vary but you will find the same produce -- fruits, vegetables, meats, cheeses, and maybe prepared food and beverages. I took time out to include some trivia about science. A jiffy is an actual unit of time: 1/100th of a second. According to Genesis 1:20-22, the chicken came before the egg.

“The Necklace” I think that this all started a long time ago when I was a school boy (believe it! Y.T. did go to school years ago!). When I read a passage somewhere that: “There are sermons in stones and life in everything! I’m not sure who wrote it, Browning or one of the writers of his time. But from then on Y.T. had a feeling that stones were almost human (although obviously they are not!). From then on Y.T. (Yours Truly!), whenever I saw an odd stone, picked it up with the hope that it might tell me its sermon! Resulting in a big collection of “odd” stones. Along with what arrowhead (later stolen) from our empty house! There got to be quite a few of them! Now of course is now, many years later, someone will find many of those small rocks around the places where we have lived and mebbe listen to some of those “sermons,”

eh? Time passed and as I grew older and went a few more places Y.T. kept up with his hobby of “petrology”. Many times Y.T. found rocks that interested him, some with small fossils -- even one with what was known as “honeycomb coral”, larger than the one they had at the U of S. Later in life when working at Outlook I walked the unfilled gravel lined canals and found many interesting (to me) stones, one of which was a softball sized one of red basalt dotted here and there with white “phenocript”, a really beautiful stone. In his travels Y.T. had never seen one like it except at the university museum in Toronto. Sometime later I got Al Bakke of the “Rock Shop” in Saskatoon to make a beautiful necklace of it when Phyllis and Y.T. first got married. We spent the first evening on our “honeymoon” watching the picture show called “The Necklace”, and feeling that I would make a lousy husband, I wanted to at least give her a real “keepsake”. As it turned out (thank heavens!) she kept the necklace (and me!) for some 71 years. So we got old, eh? And when she died in her sleep sometime ago, some of our family found the necklace among her stuff. So here we are! Or were! No more roaming the countryside staring at the ground. It would be nice to think that someone will value it as a part of their past too! After all, “There is sermons in stones”, eh? Mebbe this little bit must seem kind of short to many readers, but I fear that Y.T. always sez too much anyway! Okay? I also hate to put sentiment on the same page as this stuff, but this bit is about stones, eh? Well my name is “Mason” eh? Golfing, a la Perdue, is over for this year, but I feel that Y.T. must tell this one again. There is a whole book of wise golf sayings somewhere, and I figure that this one would be one of the last, but is a personal one and even when I write it for the third time somehow is one that the ardent golf types have

never heard before. Attention all Perdue golfers! We’ve got to go back a little way for this one!

Ye Olde Pensive Patio Bob Mason

When Y.T. had bulbar polio (in the 1950’s) his voice changed a little bit and the voice therapy people made me recite the same lines every time they saw me. This led me to recite some stuff, and every now and then Y.T. would recite some to himself!

One sunny day (years ago!) I was all by myself, resting on a bench at the course, reciting a few lines, when a cart containing two young golfers drove up. Apparently they noticed my lips moving... “Were you talking to that big rock,” they said! “Of course I was talking to it,” I replied. “That big rock is an old friend of mine! We used to have lunch together when I formed out in the hills! And when you talk to a rock you don’t get any sass! No argument! I was just having a fine discussion with it when you guys drove up! You fellows golf on through because we haven’t finished our conversation yet!” The two young hairy legged golfers teed off and drove away shaking their heads! Well! You can’t win ‘em all, eh? Like I say, our patio time is nearly over for this year! Mebbe, just mebbe next...

December 17, 2018 Dear Member, Duperow Co-op is pleased to present you with the enclosed payment. The board of directors declared an equity repayment to all eligible members, including seniors and the general membership. The payment is based on 2017 purchases as stated on your Feb 3, 2018 equity statement. The general payment is 50% of the allocation less withholding tax. Eligible seniors, age 65 in 2018, who apply, are paid all but $200, which can also be paid out if the member wishes to end his membership. The board maintained the equity ceiling at $13,000, so members whose equity exceeds $13,000 receive that excess in this payment. We require members to accumulate $200 in equity before they receive an equity payment. The cheques (520) range in size from the minimum $10 to $22,154. farmers having to focus on harvest operations almost until the first snow arrived, fall work such as fertilizer application will not have been completed on many farms. It is the same scenario in terms of fall preparation of stubble, and in some cases there will be crop still to deal with in the spring. The unfinished operations means more work will have to be carried out in the spring in order to plant the normal amount of acres. There will be definite time pressures on seeding operations, and weather will need to cooperate for everything to get done in a timely fashion. As the just past harvest illustrated weather is not always co-operative to the needs of farmers, but time will tell after our winter passes.

Jules Verne said, “Science, my boy, is made up of mistakes, but they are mistakes which it is useful to make, because they lead little by little to the truth.” The classic tale of four young women and their lives are still relevant today. Little Women was one of my favourite books and is a classic. Meg,

Jo, Beth and Amy are strong women in their own ways and are role models. One avid reader stated it this way, “You could say that strong females in literature, TV and every other medium have slowly shaped the minds of modern strong women”. On September 30, many events were planned at Orchard House in Concord to celebrate the sesquicentennial of Louisa May Alcott’s famous book. September’s columns were about the benefits of reading. Reading is good for the brain. That famous quote by Joseph Addison “reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body” has some merit. Studies show that reading does make you smarter. Reading increases the blood flow and improves connectivity in the brain. I hope everyone took the reading challenge and picked 12 books (one a month) to start. October is all about harvest and the wonderful food you can create with the bounty. A column devoted entirely to apples makes your mouth water just by reading the recipes. November everyone is gearing up for the Christmas season. We no sooner get Remembrance Day over and the Christ-

Sports tickled the funny bone in 2018 Part two of the year-inreview quips and quotes from 2018: • Reader John Choi, asking a question of columnist Norman Chad of the Washington Post: “After the disastrous G-7 summit, do you think relations with Canada would improve if we let them win the Stanley Cup every once in

awhile?” • Bob Molinaro of pilotonline.com (Hampton, Va.): “No disrespect intended, but Stanley Cup winning Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin looks like he sleeps in the woods.” • Comedy writer Jim Barach: “A hot dog shot out of a cannon by the Phillie Phanatic injured a

fan. Which was still less harmful than if they had actually caught and eaten it.” • RJ Currie of sportsdeke.com: “Brewers pitcher Adrian Houser made it through an inning of relief against the Phillies despite vomiting — twice. If ever a guy deserved to be called a hurler.” • Randy Turner of the Winnipeg Free Press, on Twitter: “I could be mistaken, but the problem with Tavares signing in Toronto is that I fear the Leafs will now get a disproportionate amount of attention from the national media.” • RJ Currie again: “The CFL Eskimos are talking with the Inuit about changing their team name, which

reportedly means ‘eaters of raw meat.’ I always thought it meant ‘eliminate Bombers from playoffs.’” • Another one from Currie: “Reuters reports an India ATM stopped working because a rat got in and ate thousands of dollars in cash before choking. Probably how the Cleveland Cavaliers feel about JR Smith.” • Greg Cote of the Miami Herald: “Daniel Cormier defeated Stipe Miocic to win the heavyweight championship at UFC 226. The obvious question arising from the bout? Who on Earth names their baby boy ‘Stipe’” • Comedian Argus Hamilton, with a World Cup update: “The Russian team that lost to Croatia will now be known as Team Siberia.” • Mike Bianchi of the Orlando (Fla.) Asquith town council meets Asquith Town Council held its regular Council meeting on Wednesday, December 12, 2018 at 7:02 p.m. Attending the meeting were Mayor Gail Erhart, Councillors Sue Sawicki, Dylan Claypool, Jeff Eide, Harold Edwards and Ted Goodnough. Also attending were CAO Holly Cross, Administrative Assistant Kathy Picketts, and Foreman Darren Kraft. A resolution was made to accept the minutes from the November 14, 2018 regular council meeting. The treasurer’s statement of receipts and expenditures for the month of November, 2018 and the bank reconciliations for the month of November, 2018 were accepted as presented. A motion was made to accept the Accounts Paid in the amount of $33,363.89 and the Accounts Payable in the amount of $36,332.74, as presented. Asquith United Church ceased Sunday services as of December 31, 2017,

and as a result dispersed some of their assets by donating to the Town of Asquith Cemetery in the amount of $10,630.56 and to Asquith Kidsport in the amount of $3,543.52. These donations were greatly appreciated. The Town of Asquith hosted a Christmas Lighting Contest and judging took place on the evening of December 21, 2018. Weight loss resolutions: Focus on wellness, not pounds (NC) If you’ve ever been on a diet and gained back the weight you lost, then you’re not alone. Obesity is a medically recognized condition that almost always comes back. That’s because our bodies have a natural tendency to maintain a set bodyweight. Weight loss triggers a biological response that increases the desire to eat, decreases our feeling of being full after we eat, and reduces our metabolism. Regardless of diet, exercise, medication or surgical intervention, weight regain always lurks in the background. Obesity is a chronic disease that is difficult to treat and requires a longterm treatment plan that extends beyond simple will power. When used in combination with lifestyle modification such as reduced calorie diets and exercise, weight management medications are another option to help people lose weight and keep it off.

appreciated by all who use it. It was with great sadness that the Asquith Town Council heard of the passing of Don Urquhart, long-time resident and volunteer fire fighter with the Town of Asquith. He will be greatly missed. Condolences to his family. Council would like to remind all residents that if you see something that is a crime or looks criminal, to call the RCMP at 306-975-1670. If you see

individuals driving dangerously, speeding, or if you see something that just doesn’t look right, please call the RCMP. It does not do any good to come into the Town office the next day to report it to office staff. It is extremely important that the RCMP have a handle of how much crime, no matter how petty, is occurring in town. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

With thanks and glad tidings from us this holiday season.
