Grub before scrub . . . Biggar students get in line for some barbecue, Tuesday, as the Biggar and District Credit Union hosted a noon-hour lunch for those who got out for the annual Town Cleanup. Both schools, businesses and various organizations, hit the

Seeding begins in some parts of the province Saskatchewan farmers have been able to seed five per cent of the

Many producers have indicated that seeding will begin in the coming weeks, once weather conditions improve.

Field conditions across the province have

improved with recent moisture. Cropland topsoil is rated as one per cent surplus, 62 per cent adequate, 30 per cent short and seven per cent very short.

Topsoil moisture on hay land and pasture is rated as one per cent surplus, 58 per cent adequate, 32 per cent short and nine per cent very short.

The dry weather conditions last year continue to affect pasture quality, as conditions are currently rated as one per cent excellent, 25 per cent good, 40 per cent fair, 25 per cent poor and nine per cent very poor.

Much of the southern and western regions received a combination of snowfall and rain this past week, with 73 millimetres reported in the Shaunavon area. This precipitation created some challenging calving conditions for livestock producers.

Letter to the Editor Dear Editor: I shouldn’t be so upset about this bicycle lanes issue because I haven’t lived in Saskatoon since the ‘60s.

But having driven buses in Toronto for 34 years and as a lifelong cyclist, I can tell you that cycle lanes are a total waste of money, street space and cause unnecessary congestion! They give a false sense of security to the cyclists as there is traffic turning in front of them and are a danger to pedestrians stepping off the curb. It creates a nightmare for someone trying to take a wheelchair across, espe-

cially in winter. When a vehicle has to pull over to the curb for any of a dozen reasons, you get in trouble for driving over those stupid posts. And how happy is the blocked traffic when a truck stops in the only lane now, and unloads a fridge or something? And an otherwise nice street becomes ugly!

Really ugly.

I wish I was at that meeting on Monday as I sure agree with Adeline Gagnon (no bike lanes) and Councillor Darren Hill who wants to make cycling “. . . great again in Saskatoon.”

I’d like to make cycling great in every town

and city, but I see only one way to make that happen, and that is an awareness blitz that every street, avenue, boulevard, highway and road, with a few exceptions, from coastto-coast is in fact . . . a bicycle land on the right hand side.

So why not put up billboards and signs everywhere saying, “Share The Road”, It Belongs To Cyclists Too”.

And I recommend cyclists get a dash cam and have a stiff wire on the left to mark any vehicle that gets too close.

Favourite food, the hamburger, gets its own month Barbecue season has arrived. Time to dust off the barbecue (some of us only barbecue in the summer) and grill something. By the way, why is it that you always run out of propane halfway through cooking?

A favourite food to cook on the grill -- the hamburger, of course. It is so popular that it has a month dedicated to it.

May is National Hamburger Month.

While this holiday has been celebrated for years it is unclear who created the month or the actual origins of the holiday.

But, the holiday does exist and you will find many “burger joints” putting their own special twist on the celebrations.

Some may give away hamburgers, or they will develop new variations on an old favourite, or you are encouraged to grill your own.

A hamburger (or burger) is defined as a sand-

Washington state newspaper in 1889 and the first recipe using ground beef mixed with onion and pepper appeared around 1902. About 14 billion hamburgers are consumed every year and about five billion hamburgers are bought for home cooking.

Not all hamburgers are created equal. When cooked right, the meat is juicy and packed with flavour. It must be easy to eat. It is so popular you can see why a whole month has been dedicated to it.

There is no recorded evidence of when the “steak” was cooked and placed on a bun but there are three theories.

One is that the owner of a Wisconsin food stall parked at a county fair flattened the hamburger

steak and put it between two slices of bread so that his patrons could eat while still walking around enjoying the fair.

A second theory is that a Texas line cook had a customer who came in to his diner and was in too much of a hurry to sit down and eat. The cook came up with the idea of placing the meat between two pieces of Texas toast and sent the customer on his way.

The third theory is the story of a German cook who made a popular sandwich using a beef patty fried in butter, served with a fried egg, between two toasted buns which was popular with sailors.

Whatever, the origin there is no doubt the hamburger has come into its own today.

The Bear Hills Special This bit is a little long, so I will shorten it a little so that the reader won’t be sound asleep at the dramatic end.

One of our sons married a girl who had brother. A lot of people’s sons have married girls who had brothers, eh? But her brother had a distinctive wide brimmed hat that he had won at the “Lobstick Golf Tournament� at Waskesiu.

Y.T. borrowed that hat while he teed off at the Kelvington tournament.

The brother had said that, “the hat makes the man.�

And sure enough Y.T. hit the ball smack down the fairway 200 yards or more.

End of Scene 1, Act 1.

Later back in Biggar over a cup of coffee, Y.T. told a friend of his (even a “golfer� has friends). And sometime later his friend, and wife, called at our place in Perdue where we (Phyllis and I) had a cup of coffee in our gazebo.

The subject of “golf� came up and Y.T. told him about the Magic Hat. Time went by (so does this story, eh?) and a long time later the man and his wife showed up for a coffee again. With great flourish he presented Y.T. with a hat that he had made, “The Bear Hills Special No. 4�. I think he might have made more!

In an old building on his farm he had found an old binder canvas, cut the slats off of it and crudely cut the form of a wide brimmed hat out of it.

Then he had sewn crudely with some rough thread (outseam) into the rough image of a hat. He wound a faded ribbon around it which he fastened with a rusty old safety pin. “Viola!� Or is it “voila�?

We laughed! We all laughed.

Y.T. is a lousy golfer anyway, but the next time he golfed he wore the old hat.

It was just after they opened the Perdue Golf Course. I teed up, ready to knock it away down

the second fairway. I tried on the hat and it seemed a little tight but I pulled it down a little and raised my driver ready to swing . . . but suddenly the hat blew off and rolled in the breeze until it wound up in the nearby water hazard.

I swung anyway and hit the ball, which must have had a low I.Q. because it followed the hat into the water. The ball sank but the hat didn’t.

Y.T. waded out and got it. I have never worn it since.

Any legends about

hats and ball just never impressed me much since.

Without a doubt, Jimmy must have enjoyed making it. He was sure a funny guy. I liked him.

I carried that old hat to many Saskatchewan golf courses, and I often thought of it, but never wore it to improve my “drive� which was kind of poor anyway.

I haven’t seen Jim for years now. But I still laugh, and whenever I think of him, I think of that hat. I wish him the best. He always struck

me as the kind of guy we needed to keep our spirits up.

So here we are in the Biggar Health Care Centre and golfing has become a part of the past, not because we were good (we weren’t), and some day someone will find that old useless hat in my old golf bad and throw it away.

But if they look inside they might see crudely scrawled: “The Bear Hills Special No. 4� and remember that we were so proud of such an old thing!

Bob Mason and his family would sincerely like to thank everyone who came to his 100th birthday celebration at the Health Care Centre in Biggar. We weren’t prepared for the huge turnourt and consequently seating space was limited but we are so thankful for how accommadating and helpful the home staff was that day. They went above and beyond their call of duty - This did not go unnoticed and was greatly appreciated.

Thank you also for all the kind words from family and friends and to everyone who took the time to write down a shared memory of our centenarian.

The day was huge success with one of the highlights being Dad paraded in by a bagpiper, Dave Mackintosh from the Saskatoon Police Pipes and Drums. It was a fitting tribute not only acknowlegding his “special day� but also recognizing the fact that he played a major role in the second World War. At the end of the day Dad was asked when the next celebration would be.

His quick reply was “when he reached the age of one hundred and eighteen.�

He stated that the oldest living person so far was one hundred and seventeen and he planned on beating that record.

Dad we wish you all the best in reaching that goal!!!

KINDERGARTEN PARENT NIGHT Parents of children five years old before January 1, 2020 are invited to an information night about the 2019 - 2020 Kindergarten programs at BCS2000 and St. Gabriel School.

. . . With our recent fire at Argo Bush/ Duperow, the massive fire brought about an equally massive (if not exceeded) response. Volunteers came to the Biggar New Horizons to man the centre as a rest area for the countless fire fighters who needed a rest, break, food and hydration.

An unbelievable amount of items were dropped off to keep fire fighters fed - a truly unbelievable response!

Many, many people should be commended for their spirit of volunteerism, namely Laura Kowalchuk and Shay Dorosh. Again, there were many, many more who simply saw a need and went to help with no desire for recognition or award. (Photos for The Independent by Kathy Sarvas)

BCS Bookworms . . . Biggar Central School Grade 4-6 students participated in a book club during the month of March and April. The students enjoyed reading the novel “Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh. They discussed the plot, character development, settings, and discussed many events about the story. They wrapped the book club up with a supper together and a movie about the novel, finding out that movies and books are sometimes very different. They look forward to next year!
