The Argo Bush ski chalet is a charred ruin after a massive ffire swept through out area llast week, amazingly so far, the oonly real loss. The bizarre scene sshows the burned up building, but trail signage remaining intact, and wildlife trails still evident. Nearly 27,000 acres were consumed in the fire, and, due to firefighters’ efforts, not one home was lost - a testament to their amazing efforts!

‘Saltwater Joy’ brings old time Atlantic Coast music to Biggar Majestic Nova Scotia’s Saltwater Joy Band will be at the Biggar Majestic Theatre this Saturday, May 11.

Launching from Nova Scotia’s Eastern shore, Saltwater Joy is currently making waves with the resurgence of what the band refers to as “Old Time Atlantic Coast Music”.

Saltwater Joy performs a full lineup of well-known songs from East Coast favourite artists: John Allan Cameron, Anne Murray, Rita MacNeil, Stan Rogers, Hank Snow, Ron Hynes, Wayne Chaulk, Stompin’ Tom Connors (and more), and the band’s performance is reminiscent of the very popular “Singalong Jubilee” Program.

With the strong Irish influence in Atlantic Coast Music, Saltwater Joy is drawn to playing well-known Irish folk and sea songs, and they have become the mainstay on the ‘Saltwater Joy’ ship. And, as Saltwater Joy continues to sail along on its musical journey, the band continuously adds songs to their line from well-loved

bands such as Great Big Sea, the Irish Rovers, Ryan’s Fancy, the Clancy Brothers and the Dubliners, to name a few.

Saltwater Joy is also attracted to the ‘Bluegrass’ along the shore . . . so they bring those tunes onboard as well.

There is no end to the Atlantic Coast musical treasures Saltwater Joy will continue to bring to the surface, as the band continues to keep the waves of these old tunes flowing.

The band has a significant following of friends from Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Saskatchewan and across the country. There’s something about Atlantic Coast Music that makes us long for the sea. And, for those who left its shores this music brings them home with every tune.

The Saltwater crew plays strictly for the fun of it! The band has two chapters, one in Nova Scotia and the other in Saskatchewan. The core, founding members of the band reside at homes in both provinces, spending several months in each

Saltwater Joy are musicians who play the music they love in their retirement years, and experience the joy of sharing it. The band entertains for groups of all ages and makes its way to community halls and events, theatres, public gatherings and festivals,

Saltwater Joy plays yearround . . . and throughout the course of each year, the band brings the music to folks who are unable to come out to it.

Biggar’s Anita Silvernagle can add a bookend to her tally of World Curling Championships.

Silvernagle, lead with the Sherry Anderson rink out of Saskatoon Nutana, defeated Denmark’s Lene Bistrup Nyboe 10-1 to take their second straight Senior World Curling crown this past Saturday in Savanger, Norway.

Sherry Anderson with third Patty Hersikorn, second Brenda Goertzen, and lead Anita Silver-

nagle, were dominant in Norway, defeating Scotland 7-3 in the semi-final to advance to the championship final.

The win qualifies them for a third world title run, this time on home soil at Kelowna, British Columbia, April 18-25, 2020.

The game versus the Danes was a dominant showing with Anderson’s final shot in the opening end scoring three.

In second end, Canada

forced Denmark into a draw for their only point of the game, rolling on to record point after point, finishing up the game 10-1 for the Canadian win.

Silvernagle, Anderson, Hersikorn and Goertzen were victorious last year for their first title in Ostersund, Sweden, defeating the United States.

The Canadian Senior Men also repeated, this

time with Skip Bryan Cochrane, third Ian MacAulay, second Morgan Currie, lead Ken Sullivan, alternate Paul Adams. They defeated Scotland 7-5 in their championship final for an all red podium of Canadian curling athletes. In 2018 skip Wade White, third Barry Chwedoruk, second Daniel Holowaychuk, and lead George White were victorious in Sweden.

No one wins in with a carbon tax Jason Kenney and the United Conservative Party have just been sworn into government and officially take over the reigns thus ushering in a new era of pro oil. Kenney’s first words were to rally against the carbon tax and issued a warning to the British Columbia government with a “turn off the taps” law.

Anyone who has travelled to B.C. recently can’t help but notice the price of gas. It’s high. So high even Premier Horgan has admitted British Columbians can no longer tolerate the prices. His solution is for Alberta to build more refineries but unless B.C. agrees to the pipeline Albertans probably won’t send any oil to that province, refinery or no refinery.

One study shows that British Columbians who live close to the U.S.-Canada border are flocking to Washington State to gas up. Even after the exchange rate, it is estimated there is a savings of about 50 cents per litre. Take a 70-litre fuel tank, that’s a savings of $35 per trip times, an average of two fill ups per week averaging out to $70 per week or $3,600 per year in savings.

B.C. was one of the first provinces to jump on the carbon tax bandwagon implementing the tax in 2008. The Taxpayers Federation took stock of the program and found that 10 years later the tax has made little or no difference except rising gas prices.

If the whole end point is to encourage people to recycle and reuse then taxing people is not the answer. Specifically taxing one industry only. A tax only puts revenue into government coffers while ignoring the realities of life.

The premise was to make gas so expensive that people would chose not to drive and use other transit options. It may make sense in theory but not in reality.

In Saskatchewan, for example, public transit is not possible. Rural residents don’t have those options, our agriculture based industries and communities simply don’t have those choices. Penalizing industries that sustain our economy will not solve the issue nor will it be in the best interest of anyone.

Gnomes are becoming popular again The third Saturday in April is set aside for an annual event at my favourite garden centre.

The locally owned store has a spring opening with seminars, make and take workshops, specials on merchandise, food tastings. It is an enjoyable way to spend a spring day.

This year I couldn’t help notice all the gnomes. Some were comical, some whimsical and others more on the “normal” side. And colourful, too. Large ones, small ones and any size in between. Whatever type of garden gnome suited your taste was sure to be on display.

These statues first made their appearance

in the 1700s and were called house dwarfs and were made out of wood or porcelain. In Germany, the dwarfs were associated with a mixture of traditional stories and superstitions. It is believed the little folk helped around the mines and on the farm. Baehr and Maresch, which is a company in Dresden, made small ceramic statues of these little folk.

Ten years passed and the statues of the dwarfs spread from Saxony to Thuringia, across Germany and into France. Sir Charles Isham brought 12 terracotta gnomes back to Britain and it was here they were given the name “gnomes”.

Isham displayed them in

his home, Lamport Hall in Northhamptonshire. Lampy is the only gnome to survive and is on display at Lamport Hall.

It’s safe to say that the popularity of garden gnomes spread and today there are many manufacturers and varieties. Garden enthusiasts welcome them but not everyone in the public is as welcoming. The Chelsea Garden Show in London

This group releases the gnomes into local forests which, according to the group, is the natural gnome habitat.

Then there is the story of Howard. Howard is the world’s largest gnome at eight metres tall and has been standing on Nanoose Bay on Vancouver Island for 21 years. However, Howard has seen some wear and tear over the years. His platform is rotting, the paint is peeling and moss is growing on his beard.

He needs a new home.

The gnome was built out of scrap metal and was used as a mascot for an amusement park and go-kart track. Years later,

the property was sold and the present owners promised to maintain the statue.

Years later, the gnome has fallen into disrepair and the owners want to dismantle it. Some in the community feel Howard is a legacy, a part of the history and should be saved.

The belief is that garden gnomes faithfully protect their gardens from all forms of evil.

Whether you believe in this superstition or just like the decorative nature of gnomes, this is the season to put them on display. They have been called earth guardians and are likely to be around for generations.

Government of Saskatchewan partnering with Natural Resources Canada to help producers manage climate change The Government of Saskatchewan, in partnership with Natural Resources Canada and the Saskatchewan Water Security Agency (WSA), announced $1.3 million in funding and in-kind support to help Saskatchewan producers and communities successfully manage the impacts of climate change.

Natural Resources Canada pledged more than $587,000 through the Building Regional Adaptation Capacity and Expertise (BRACE) Program. The Government of Saskatchewan is providing $320,000, while the WSA along with part-

ner organizations will contribute an additional $326,000 of in-kind support.

“The impacts of climate change are being felt across Canada, posing real risks to our communities, economy and environment,” said Federal Minister of Natural Resources Amarjeet Sohi.

“This is why we support projects such as these, which will help producers and communities increase their resilience to a changing climate.”

“Our government is pleased to support this important initiative that will help rural Saskatchewan better respond and

adapt to the impacts of climate change,” Minister Responsible for the Saskatchewan Water Security Agency Dustin Duncan said. “Saskatchewan producers will be able to adopt best practices for agricultural water management as work continues on a made-in-Saskatchewan Climate Resiliency Plan.”

The funding will be used to deliver three projects. The first project will be for WSA and partner organizations to offer workshops for up to 2,500 agricultural producers over the next two years. These workshops will introduce produc-

ers to the Saskatchewan Agricultural Water Management Strategy and help them incorporate climate change considerations into the design of their agricultural drainage projects, making them more resilient to a changing climate.

As part of the Agricultural Water Management Strategy, the province implemented new drainage regulations in 2015 that requires all agricultural landowners have a drainage approval for their drainage projects.

This ensures that landowners can legally manage water on their land while addressing the impacts related to flooding, water quality and the environment.

The funding will also be used to allow WSA to increase its Qualified Persons (QPs) training pro-

gram to build additional capacity in each region of the province. QPs work with landowners to help them effectively advance their drainage projects and assist with the approval process.

The third component of the funding will be used to work with communities, at high risk to hydrological drought, to develop drought response plans. The intent of these plans is to help communities become resilient

to drought conditions by enabling them to consider existing hazards and vulnerabilities, and future climate change projections at a community level.

Natural Resources Canada’s BRACE program works with provinces to support training activities that increase the ability of organizations, professionals, businesses and communities to adapt and accelerate their climate resilience.

Ye Swan Song EDITOR’S NOTE: It is with great pleasure that we bring to you, in this issue of The Independent, an article that celebrates a pretty special individual. For those of you who read this weekly offering, Bob Mason or Y.T. (Yours Truly) has been a special friend, compatriot in the written word, and a genuine pleasure to be around. Bob has lived an exceptional life - a decorated Second World War veteran who also fought - and won! - a battle with polio, going on to become a published author, an avid golfer, community supporter, cornerstone and “bon vivant” (sociable man about town without the luxurious trappings!) who on May 8 will turn 100 years young. Always prepared, Bob presented this column nearly five years ago. Sit back and enjoy!

Dear Editor: None of us know just what the future holds, but being an old Boy Scout, Y.T. is going to “Be Prepared!”

This piece was written

mostly in February 2015 and is meant to be printed (if ever!) in the early month of May 2019, on Y.T.’s 100th Birthday!

Not being very experienced in this kind of stuff, Y.T. isn’t going to do a very good job of writing this “Once in a Lifetime” thing!

As a matter of fact, he has been told many times that he doesn’t do a good job at anything!

I suppose though that he had just better throw in a few of his over-used wisecracks and plunge in there anyway, eh?

I think that it was about Christmas time in 1997 that Yours Truly sent in his first piece to the Independent. It wasn’t very good, I thought, but Daryl and company printed it anyway, and as it turned out, they have been printing stuff ever since!

Thanks folks for having read some of them, and more or less “made the day” of this old guy!

After all, when a fellow turns 80 there isn’t much else that a fellow can do anymore!

Sure, we have O.A.S.

(Old Age Security!) and an army pension coming in every so often, but sitting in the “Counting House” (to use the old nursery rhyme) isn’t as fulfilling a pastime as it was when we were younger.

And “sitting” in the parlour eating bread and honey doesn’t taste that good anymore either!

Up to the time that Y.T. writes this, things have gone pretty well. Though looking forward at the next few years, there must be a few changes coming!

Y.T.’s golf game has gotten steadily poorer over the years until he fears that “golfing my age” is going to be a problem!

They tell me that the great Bob Hope golfed his age once, but no one would believe that he was 110 years old!

“Thank You!” for having made the last few years of my long life more meaningful!

As mentioned above, all has gone well on the Mason “Estate” for years now! Sure, I complain about the way things are now and then, but who doesn’t, eh? Even hearing the sad story of some of our poor starving Senators, seems to make our share of life seem a little brighter!

The way Yours Truly sees it, the people in charge of things keep throwing a few “scraps” our way in order to keep us happy. Heck, Y.T. has lived off of “scraps” for most of his life!

Most of the people that Y.T. has written about have left the country (address unknown!) and a lot of their homesteaded places aren’t there anymore. And before society gets buried by smartphones and ipods, Yours Truly has always felt he should mebbe scrawl a few lines about them!

Mebbe some of those people in our past weren’t as nice as we wanted them to be, but

remembering that they were there with us is what really counts!

I suppose that God (and The Independent!) willing Yours Truly (in his after “Swan Song” days!) will blast away about money being the “root of all evil” and the not-sostraight-and-narrow path of politics all the while slyly inferring what a great guy he thinks he is!

One of the old books I have sez that the song of a dying swan is really a myth believed by the ancients. I suppose that in their ignorant way they preferred a “Sweet Song” instead of the groans of dying people. I dunno? There are a lot of things going on that we don’t know!

Well, dying can be done gracefully, eh?

Again, Y.T. doesn’t know! Yours Truly has to admit that being graceful has never been one of his stronger attributes.

And as for his voice, well, it leaves quite a bit to be desired.

Being his “Swan Song” though, he can stickhandle his old pen around ... and he can write!

Right now, Y.T. has to be content when the younger people “tee” the ball up and hit it a country mile! The younger ones really “slam it!” (which rhymes with the word commonly used when Y.T. hits it into the rough!)

by Chasity Braitenbach The last week at New Horizons was eventful to say the least.

Let’s start with the regular report before we get into the exciting stuff.

On April 22 was Monday Kaiser with two tables.

The winners were as follows: in first place was Marie Roesch with 262 points, in second place was Pat Turner with 234 points, in third place was Ann Muc with 193 points, and in fourth was Bill Fisher with 182 points.

On April 25 we had bingo downstairs with a total of 13 players. The winner of the half-and-half game was Pat Turner and on the Blackout game there was a tie between Marie Roesch and Moe Goring.

Now to the exciting part.

Due to the fire that started at Argo Bush on April 15, New Horizons was used as a temporary mess hall of sorts. Volunteers worked 24-hours a day to prepare food and drinks to be delivered to the firefighters, who also worked tirelessly around the clock. It was absolutely amazing to see the number of people who donated food, drinks, cough drops, et cetera and the number of people who dropped everything to help. There were posts on Facebook asking for volunteers to take shifts

to prep food and drinks throughout the night and the responses came so quickly that I was absolutely floored. There was no shortage of people to help and there was so much food donated that quite a bit of leftover food was donated to other fire halls that helped, the daycare, schools and other organizations that could make use of it after all was said and done.

Our firefighters and volunteers who helped put out the fires did such an amazing job keeping us safe, that I am almost at a lack for words. In the face of such a terrible event, the entire town of Biggar really showed what it means to be a “community.”

I am so proud to call Biggar my home.

Recently I ventured to a farm just outside Yorkton for an opportunity to take pictures of a number of Clydesdale foals.

Nothing brings forth the uniqueness of farming, or the hope that comes with spring, more than newborn livestock; foals, calves, or lambs.

You might be having a lousy day, there might be pressures on the business side of farming, but such things do tend to evaporate, at least for a little while, when dealing with newborn livestock, the renewal of the season on four wobbly legs.

It might sound a tad overly idyllic, but when a certain Clydesdale foal came to me as I shot pictures, happily accepting being petted, the reason people farm in spite of the challenges was once again crystal clear to me.

Derby definitely a ‘Bucket List’ event Now that the 145th running of the Kentucky Derby is in the books, it’s time to bemoan the fact that Louisville’s Churchill Downs on the first Saturday in May remains unvisited by your weekly sports columnist.

If you’re a real sports fan — and you must have at least a passing interest or you probably wouldn’t be reading these words — then drinking mint juleps, joining more than 150,000 people outdoors on a Saturday afternoon in Kentucky —many of them wearing colourfully weird hats — and watching the horses parade in the paddock prior to the run for the roses is probably on your sports bucket list.

If money were no object, and family and work commitments were low, I’d purchase one of those open-ended plane tickets and fly around the globe catching some of the best the sports world has to offer. Getting tickets to a UFC main event wouldn’t be on the list, but just about everything else where

they keep score would be up for consideration.

How long is your list?

Here’s mine, in no particular order: • The aforementioned Churchill Downs for the Kentucky Derby.

• The Brickyard in Indianapolis for the Indy 500. Not that I’m a big auto racing fan, but there’s something to be said for iconic events in famous locations, and that certainly ranks.

• Augusta National Golf Course in April when the Masters is played. If you have enough cash, and you know ‘some people’ you can probably get tickets. Many of my friends and relatives have ticked this one off their bucket list, but it remains merely a dream for me.

• A Premier League soccer game in Wembley Stadium, preferably featuring Man U. • Courtside seats at Wimbledon in July.

• A Stanley Cup final series.

• Every game in a World Series, preferably played in Atlanta and Boston, because the Braves have

Eileen Irvine With great pleasure, the Catholic Women’s League (CWL) would like to nominate Eileen Irvine as Mother of the Year.

Eileen was born in St. Margaret’s Hospital at Biggar to Anthony and Agnes Germsheid of Handel. Her father passed away when she was 8.

Growing up in Handel holds memories of many happy hours playing outside with her four siblings and countless friends from the village. Later in life, Eileen was reunited with another sister, Joyce.

Eileen attended Handel school. After graduation, she worked in dietary at St. Margaret Hospital.

She took time off to be a stay at home mom, then she worked in housekeeping and the kitchen at the hospitals for 30 years.

In 1965,

she married Norman Irvine, and before his passing, she spent many years enjoying his company at home and in the outdoors; fishing, hunting, quading and camping. She has two children: Brent and Denise, three grandchildren: Joel, Sean, Danielle and four great-grandchildren: Jayda, Kaidon, Greyson and Gabriella.

The CWL is only one of her contributions to the community. She was a leader of the first registered Pathfinder Troop in Saskatchewan. In her retirement, Eileen has helped with the Community Kitchen teaching young people how to cook. Her hobbies include cooking, dancing, gardening and having company.

Congratulations Eileen, enjoy your day.

Katie Bent was born to Peter and Mary Danderfer ar Revenue.

She eventually moved to the Landis District where her Mom and Dad farmed and where she wound up being her father’s number one helper!

She received her schooling in several school districts, but mainly at the Wolfe School.

Katie married Edward Bent in 1958 and resided by and in the town of Landis where they farmed until 1992. In those years, she raised six wonderful children. Katie and Edward celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this past year.

As far as hobbies, when Katie is not busy with the farm, she enjoys crocheting and doing jigsaw

puzzles by the bushels.

She was an avid gardener and always had lots to share with family and friends.

Katie was also very active in the community.

Her son, Dan, was involved in hockey so she had the opportunity to travel all around the province, too many places to even count! In her travels she met dozens of new people and loved every minute of it!

Katie’s life has been very full, having been married 60 years and counting, being blessed with six children, 10 grandchildren and eight greatgrandchildren.

Katie extends a big thank you to the Landis CWL for nominating her for the 2019 Mother of the Year.

Rita Cleaveley

Biggar United Church is very pleased to submit Rita Cleaveley’s name for the Mother of the Year Tea. Rita was born and raised in Wolseley, with two sisters and one brother.

She excelled at sports and coached 8 and under hardball, as well as high school fast baseball.

Rita has been a leader in 4-H and Scouts, Sunday School teacher and church choir member.

She loved to play fastball, bowl, and golf. Rita continued her enjoyment of curling long after she moved to Biggar.

Rita married Don Cleaveley in 1961. Both Rita and Don were instrumental in the building of the new Biggar United Church both serving on the Boards, Leadership Team and various committees.

She is very active in the

church and at New Horizons.

Rita and Don had a son, Blair, deceased; and a daughter, Sandra and Don Beckett; grandson, Chris and Brooke Beckett and great-granddaughter, Ember; and a granddaughter, Hailey Beckett.

Children have always found a warm welcoming and happy place at Rita’s home as well as her extended family friends.

Rita has enjoyed extensive travelling with Don, her sister Ferne and her friend, Margaret Irven.

You can always know when Rita is in a crowd because of her infectious laugh. Rita’s sense of humour has gotten her through all the tough times in her life. Her laughter and smiles are her trade mark.

Rita is very pleased to represent Biggar United Church.

Eye safety tips for outdoor athletes

(NC) With warmer weather on the horizon, many of us will be heading outside to explore all that the great outdoors has to offer.

Soon, more of us will start walking or biking to work and participating in family hikes on the weekends. Many will also start to practice physical activities or sports outdoors.

However, there are many precautions to keep in mind regarding eye health and safety. It is recommended that you: 1.) Use protective eye wear: Ninety per cent of sports-related eye injuries can be avoided with the use of protective eye wear. This includes wearing safety glasses, goggles, safety shields, and eye guards.

2.) Wear sunglasses: Tennis, soccer and baseball enthusiasts practising in the warm sunlight need to be aware that prolonged exposure to sunlight can increase the risk of getting an eye disease like cataract. The stakes of UVR damage are high but the solution is simple: protect your eyes.

Wear prescription eyeglasses with 100 per cent UVR-protective lenses, a wide-brimmed hat, and stay out of the sun during peak sunlight hours.

3.) Keep dry eye at bay: Weather that’s hot, dry or

windy can irritate a common condition called dry eye. This kind of environment affects the tear film, drying out the eye’s surface. To protect your eyes in these conditions, wear wrap-around glasses to keep wind from your eye’s surface. Also, use artificial tears (preferably those that are preservative free) to keep eyes moist and refreshed during football scrums, lacrosse practices and weeknight jogs in the park.

4.) Prevent “swimmer’s eye� in the pool: Chemicals used in pools to keep the water clean, such as chlorine, can affect the natural tear film that keeps our eyes moist and healthy. The result? Red, gritty-feeling eyes and blurry vision. Backstroke experts can keep eyes feeling and looking good by wearing swim goggles in the pool. Splash your closed eyes with fresh water immediately after getting out of the pool.
