St. Gabriel School held their annual Share Lent Carnival, April 18, raising money for a cause close to home.

Students and staff played games and bought treats, all to help raise much needed funds for the purchase of a projector and wall screen for St. Gabriel Parish. With Easter now a pleasant memory, filled with chocolate bunnies and colourful eggs, these kids went a long way to helping their parish, all the while having a little bit of fun!

Grass fire threatens homes A state of emergency was declared Monday as an out of control grass fire blazed southwest of Biggar.

As of Independent deadline, no injuries or fatalities were reported, but the fire consumed a vast area with reports stating roughly 15 square kilometres.

The fire, located in an area between HIghway 4 and 51, and the Tower and Duperow Roads, began Monday. Advisories were issued for evacuation with area residents voluntarily leaving the area. Patients at Biggar Hospital and residents at the long term care home were also moved. A shelter in place was established at the Biggar Community Hall, while various organizations donated food, water, juices, moved or housed cattle and horses.

were battling the blaze along with an aircraft.

As of Wednesday, the province reported the fire was still burning but was contained. Much work still needed to be completed before the fire will be considered extinguished.

Town residents were not asked to evacuate but were told to be prepared.

Many did not receive the notice, instead hearing of the order through second-hand means. Those without Internet access were in the dark, relying on rumour and gossip.

Astonished callers from across the country were surprised to learn that town residents were still in there homes, as news reports left a flawed impression.

Members of the public were asked to avoid the area completely as to not compound fire fighters or emergency personnel efforts.

Symbol of Remembrance . . . Given our tremendous gift of salvation, a multi-denominational walking of the cross took place on Good Friday, a way to remember what it would have been for Christ to have walked through the city, knowing that at the end, crucifixion awaited. Vehicle stolen in Unity Unity RCMP are asking for the public’s assistance in the following matter.

On April 16, the Unity/ Wilkie/Macklin RCMP received a complaint of a theft of motor vehicle.

A 2007 GMC Sierra, white in colour, was stolen sometime during the night. The truck has a set of after market rims which would set it out from other similar vehicles.

The vehicle last had a Saskatchewan licence plate 383FGJ. The RCMP is requesting the public report any suspicious person or vehicles they observe as well as any occurrences where someone has come onto their property.

They would like to remind the public to lock their vehicles and buildings when they are away from home.

A job well done Bad things do happen in the world, like war, natural disasters, disease. But out of those situations always arise stories of ordinary people doing extraordinary things.

Daryn Kagan Unfortunately bad things do sometimes happen. That was the case with the fire southwest of Biggar this week. At the time of writing this editorial the fire was reported as being contained there still will be a lot of work to do in the coming days, weeks and months.

The people who live in the Biggar area are extraordinary. They have proved that time and time again when disasters strike. The VIA Rail train derailment was just one example.

This time when the call went out for help, the citizens stepped up to the plate again. Everyone from emergency services personnel (firefighters, RCMP, health) to the concerned citizens who brought food to those who looked after livestock played an important role in helping to avert what could have been an even more serious disaster than it was. Our neighbours from surrounding communities also came to help.

In the following weeks there will be lots of stories being shared with each other. There will be memories and even a few laughs. Because, in spite of the seriousness, things happen that you shake your head at.

It wasn’t just locals that were concerned. A number of people in town received phone calls from family and friends in other places wondering what was happening, how we were doing and even offering places to stay during the “evacuation process”. Thankfully, that did not have to happen.

Sylvia Burwell said, “While natural disasters capture headlines and national attention short-term, the work of recovery and rebuilding is long-term.”

Once again a heartfelt thank you to everyone. Whether you played a large role or a small role, it shows what a community can accomplish when it pulls together.

Notre Dame a grand lady with grand history I am writing this the day after Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris was engulfed in flames. Millions around the world watched news coverage of the event and many Parisians stood mesmerized as one of their oldest landmarks burned.

Canadian architect Arthur Erickson said, “Great buildings that move the spirit have always been rare. In every case they are unique, poetic, products of the heart.”

It can be fairly said that Notre Dame de Paris was a great building that moved the spirit.

Standing in the heart of Paris the church receives almost 13 million visitors per year which is more

than the Eiffel Tower.

Not only is it a tourist attraction but it is also a working church. Plans would have been underway to celebrate this upcoming Easter season, an important time in the Catholic religion. Think of all the christenings, marriages and funerals the walls of the church would have witnessed.

The many Christmases celebrated there, and the many ceremonial events.

Many memories for many people.

Built in the 12th century the cathedral was built using wood-timber frames. The trees were cut from 52 acres of mature forest. Each beam was made from an individual tree which

spawned the nickname “The Forest”. According to experts these beams will be next to impossible to replace in the rebuilding process.

In all likelihood alternative materials will have to be used.

Construction on the church began in 1163 and over the years various steps were completed.

bells each with their own name. The pipe organ dating back to the 18th century with some 8,000 pipes; played with five keyboards.

Victor Hugo wrote his book The Hunchback of Notre Dame mainly to make people aware of the value of Gothic architecture. It was 1829 and the church was neglected and the medieval stained glass windows of the church had been replaced by white glass to let more light into the church. Hugo was active in trying to save medieval architecture, particularly in Paris.

“There exists in this era, for thoughts written in stone, a privilege absolutely comparable

to our current freedom of the press. It is the freedom of architecture.”

Book V, Chapter 2.

The book(s) had some effect as people started to take a look a preserving old buildings. Hugo actually wrote three books, all aimed at convincing people to save the past.

Historians today know and value the importance of preservation of the past.

While we watch the news for updates, it is thought that some of the artifacts have been saved. Most notably the Crown of Thorns which was worn by Christ at his crucifixion and is one of the most revered religious artifacts.

New Horizons Activities

by Chasity Braitenbach This past week at New Horizons we had Kaiser on April 15 in the afternoon.

The first place winner was Ken Pearce with 267 points, in second place

was Pat Turner with 239 points, in third was Joyce Colbert with 205 points, and in fourth was Marie Roesch with 193 points.

The highest scoring game was played by Pat and Joyce with a score of 61.

Fill the Foodbanks . . . Residents of Biggar, Perdue and Landis, Biggar and District Credit Union, BCS2000 and St. Gabriel School, were involved in a partnership with Golden West Radio to ‘Fill the Foodbanks’. On April 16 New Horizons had a bake sale at Pharmasave which went extremely well!

We managed to raise a total of over $500 thanks to all of the volunteers that donated baked goods and money.

On April 17 we had our monthly Jam Session with a crowd of 44 people in attendance. We welcomed a new entertainer to the stage; Don Turta. We also heard some wonderful music from some of our regular entertainers including Bob McQuire, Bill Haffermehl, Gordon Laycock, Bob Wiseman and Stan Gardner.

On Friday, April 19 we were closed for Good Friday. I’m hoping all you readers out there had a good Easter weekend!

On Saturday, April 20 there was a celebration at New Horizons for Emily Liska’s 90th birthday. Emily Liska is a New Horizons board member and volunteer who has done a lot for us over the years.

Happy birthday Emily!

All the Legion men were to give their few minutes in the spotlight, even Y.T. who recited “The Shooting of Dan McGrew�. It finally came to little shy Arthur to give his bit, but all that he knew was a story told him by his father: “One cold dark night in Russia, the Captain said to his Lieutenant: ‘Scottie my boy tell me a thrilling story.’�

So Scottie sat down on a stump and began it! He seemed to forget the next line, so he said: “One cold, dark night in Russia, the Captain said to his Lieutenant: Scottie my boy tell me a thrilling story!�

the same lines over and over again when several voices in the crowd hollered: “Sit down Art, sit down!� and Art sat down.

We had been entertained for a few minutes.

The night went on, but Art’s story reminded me of a night in Northwest Germany. It was a night in 1945 that kept coming back to me.

Wilf Day and Y.T. crawled into an old house because we were tired from a long patrol. We fell asleep behind a long counter.

When we awoke (in the dark) there were a lot of strange voices echoing in the room, speaking a language that we don’t know. We waited ...

what language were they speaking?

It turned out that the people (men and women ) had been put in the Russian Army to fight attacking Germans, only to be captured by so called “enemy� who put them in the GerBob Mason many Army and were again captured, this time by some British troops in our area!

They had no idea what it was all about! Finally a Canadian soldier knew a little of their Kurdish language. I still don’t know exactly where they came from, way down on one of the “stands�,

northwest of India, but they sure scared day and Y.T. out of our wits! “Tell me a thrilling story�, eh?

It seems to me that Y.T. is kind of running out of stories lately and the only way that I think of them is when I am reminded of times past!

I guess this is because of “old age!� There must be a lot of “Last years� left yet though. So keep on reminding me, eh?!

Are we ever lucky that people call now and then, and we wouldn’t feel right if they didn’t remind me of something that passed and we never ever noticed it!

I think we have one of the most caring families in the country – and I was ever lucky to have been married to one of the nicest girls in the country! “Lend me your ears�, eh ... and thanks for everything!

Agricultural trade a cloudy issue

by Calvin Daniels There are rules to trade between most countries, but that does not mean those rules are always followed.

Of course there are avenues to push for the rules to be applied properly, but like the wheels of justice in general the process on world trade has wheels which move slowly.

The body in terms of world trade is ultimately the World Trade Organization (WTO), which recently again came to the forefront in terms of farm trade, as it brought down a ruling in favour of the United States in a trade dispute regarding China’s application of tariff-rate quotas (TRQ’s) for wheat, corn and rice.

What is interesting here, more so than the ruling, is the general slowness of the process.

According to a recent Western Producer article, “the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) estimated that US$3.5 billion of corn, wheat and rice could have been imported

by China in 2015, if the latter applied the TRQ’s in a proper manner.

We are now talking about a trade issue that was first noted four-plus years ago.

Granted, the same article also noted, “it wasn’t until December 2016 that the U.S. requested consultations with China

regarding the latter’s application of TRQ’s.

Eight months later the U.S. turned to the WTO to settle the matter, and submissions from the U.S. and China were made during the spring of 2018.”

However you mark Calvin Daniels the actual dates on a calendar the dispute hung a cloud over trade between two major economic powers for an extended period of time. While such a dispute might be assumed to singularly involve the two countries

directly involved, when it is major traders such as China and the U.S., it does hang a cloud over trade in the particular commodities involved on a broader basis.

In this particular case the dispute is but one element of a larger issue in terms of world trade, which has the U.S. and China in a confrontation separate from trade, but with trade being dragged into the dispute as a club for both sides to bring pressure to bear.

The dispute is ultimately a symptom of a protectionist American government, led by a wild card president positioned versus a China which has emerged as a world economic leader which is flexing its economic muscles to get what it wants.

It is a situation which should be seen as worrisome as it brings a definite air of instability in world trade which has nothing to do with supply and demand economics, but is being caused by political arrogance and posturing.

Tiger resumes chase for 18 majors Tiger Woods is back on the train to Jackâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 18.

Once thought automatic, then impossible, winning 18 major golf championships is now back in the discussion after Woods stunned the sports world by winning the 2019 Masters at Augusta, Ga. What a comeback!

Woods was 1,199th in the world in December of 2017.

Now heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s officially No. 6. In the hearts of legions of golf fans, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s No. 1.

It was in late January of 2015 and the tentative comeback attempt

by Woods from injury, scandal and public humiliation was in its infancy.

It was sad. He was at the Phoenix Open, having not played a regular PGA Tour schedule for most of 2014, finishing only three tournaments. Back injuries had him wondering whether he would ever play again.

So here he was in Phoenix in 2015, trying to start another comeback. He shot 73 in the first round and skulled and chunked chips in the second round en route to an embarrassing 82.

The critics were quick to declare his storied career finished. When he
