The Biggar School of Dance hosted their annual competition at the Majestic Theatre, April 13-14, bringing in clubs from the province to twirl and cavort, put their creativity in motion.

Our local dance club should be proud of the way they competed, the way they hosted, and for their abilities which continue to grow and progress.

Adjudicators praised our dancers for their talents and enthusiasm, and those who took in the competition, marvelled at their skill.

by Delta Fay Cruickshank for the Biggar Museum and Gallery On Tuesday, April 9, Delta Fay Cruickshank and Christy McCafferty drove to Kyle. In another vehicle were Rae Chamberlain, Barb Archibald and Shirley Williams.

They were going to Kyle to be presented with the Museum of the Year award, presented by the Rivers West District for Sport, Culture and Recreation.

Cruickshank and McCafferty represented the museum, and Chamberlain, Archibald and Williams were represent-

ing the Biggar Branch of the Saskatchewan Genealogical Society, the organization that nominated the museum for the award.

The genealogists sat down at one of their meetings and made a long list of 43 reasons why they thought that the Biggar Museum and Gallery deserved the award.

Here are just a few of the reasons why the museum was awarded Museum of the Year: Has a first class modern facility; Museum is open year round; Admission by donation only; Big-

gar’s Tourist Information Centre; Monthly art exhibits; Staff eager to give a personal tour of the history of Biggar; Runs a monthly “What’s It” contest; Active with museums in the West Central Museums Network; Both schools in Biggar visit the museum several times throughout the year; Mentors students from the Biggar Central School throughout the school year; Barbecue, Pancake Breakfast, Hay Ride, Hot Dog sales, cookie sales, pie sales and book sales fund raising events; Enthusiastic backing by many

volunteers who bake for the fund raising events; Christmas Magic Silent Auction every year, becomes the place to get great gifts for the holiday season!; Tiny Tots come for Halloween; Created videos documenting the history of Biggar; Digitalization photos, and the artifact collection; A forward and hardworking Board of Directors; A wonderful enthusiastic staff.

(Submitted Photo) Born and raised in Biggar, Marc Holt began playing music at a young age, starting with piano and later adding electric and bass guitars and then the saxophone (bari and alto) which he eventually chose to pursue as a post-secondary education. In 2008, Marc moved to Saskatoon to attend the University of Saskatchewan. In the spring of 2014, he completed a Bachelor of Arts in Music.

Nevin Buehler was born and raised in Saskatoon

and has been playing bass for over 10 years.

He is currently working on completing the combined Bachelor of Music in Music Education degree at the University of Saskatchewan.

Michael Stankowski was born in Saskatoon.

He began studying the guitar at the age of 9. In addition to being a member of the Marc Holt Quintet, he currently plays in a Celtic-influenced folk-rock band called A Dram Too Few, and works off-and-on

um is their museum.

In the front lobby of our museum there are many plaques with lots of names on them . . . when I first heard of our award, I envisioned the spirit of every one of those people in the lobby, accepting the award.

This building was purpose built as a museum to preserve, protect and present the history of Biggar and area for the community and to the world. And seems like we are doing just that, and people appreciate it!

Home town boy performs final concert of Arts Council season

The Marc Holt Quintet hits the Majestic Theatre stage this Saturday, April 27 for the last concert of the Biggar and District Arts Council concert season.

The Marc Holt Quintet is a Saskatoon-based group of passionate young jazz musicians exploring and putting their own spin on classic standards and new arrangements.

The quintet has a taste for swing, ballads, and the blues along with some funk and contemporary jazz. Led by baritone saxophonist Marc Holt, the quintet recorded their first EP together in December of 2013, called ‘The Majestic Sessions’ and after a few small shows as a trio or quartet, they made their full band debut at the 2014 SaskTel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival. Marc is backed up by pianist Bryn Becker, guitarist Michael Stankowski, bassist Nevin Buehler, and drummer Nathan Abramyk.

The Rivers West District for Sport, Culture and Recreation is an organization whose purpose is to enhance the delivery of lottery-funded sport, culture and recreation programming and services throughout the Rivers West District.

with a number of dif ferent local acts playing guitar, bass, harmonica and percussion.

Dylan Smith began to play drums when he was 13 years of age.

Dylan now resides in Saskatoon where he plays with the Marc Holt Quintet, local blues/rock group Flathead, as well as an afro beat

octet called The Population.

Bryn Becker started on the piano when he moved to Saskatoon in 1999. In addition to the Marc Holt Quintet, Bryn plays with Condition One (with fellow quintet-mate Nevin), a jazz modern jazz trio, and the Population, an eight-piece afrobeat ensemble.

The Marc Holt Quintet is at the Majestic Theatre this Saturday, April 27, 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at de Moissac Jewellers.

A cautionary tale Recently the community newspaper in Outlook posed a number of questions to the Mayor. These questions were about the town budget, a repayment plan for various loans and line of credit, changes to lagoon access, civic facilities, town’s water supply, in camera time. After consideration the Mayor took the questions to a council meeting.

The response from Outlook Town Council was perplexing and quite frankly out of line. In a nutshell the town’s response indicated they felt the newspaper had no right to ask these questions of council, any future inquiries should be directed to administration and a letter will be sent to Prairie Newspapers Group advising them “of the malicious tactics used by their local newspaper staff.”

Of course, the questions and the letter was printed in the newspaper and the following week the Letters to the Editor column filled up the pages.

Irate citizens who feel the newspaper had every right to ask these questions on their behalf. There was even one from the “higher ups” at PNG. Gord Brewerton, Vice President, Saskatchewan Operations, Prairie Newspaper Group wrote an open letter to council in which he stated, “It is our opinion that such tactics by government (local or otherwise), should be deeply concerning to anyone who values democracy.

“Politicians openly denying journalism’s base purpose seems to be all the rage these days, but that needs to stop.”

This is a cautionary tale for any politician, municipal, provincial or federal. It is important to communicate with the people. It is necessary to be open and transparent. And, voters have a funny way of deciding for themselves what they think they need to know.

Passing off questions or inquiries to administrative or bureaucrats is not answering to the public.

You were the ones voted in and it is your job to answer questions even the tough ones.

It’s all part of democracy.

Canada’s growing regulatory morass

by Kenneth P. Green, Resident Scholar and Chair in Energy and Environmental Studies, Fraser Institute Writing in the Financial Post, Geoffrey Morgan highlights a stark dichotomy between Canada and the United States in getting pipelines approved: “As Canada dithered, America signed off on 3 oil pipelines to carry 2.4 million barrels a day” and “since 2016, Canadian companies have submitted only one new project for National Energy Board approval compared with 14 equivalent applications to the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.”

Of course, the U.S. population is 10 times that of Canada, so it would be expected to

USD 120 billion, while Canadian spending fell to USD 45 billion, a 19 per cent decrease since 2016.

The report also shows how sluggish project approvals are in Canada compared to the U.S., with data showing that average approval timelines grew from 357 days in 2009 to 681 days in 2016 (in Canada), whereas “the average days for approval of an equivalent project peaked at 561 in 2015, but dropped as low as 336 in 2017 (for the U.S.). The bottom line?

Reluctance to invest in Canada.

Over the past two years alone, TransCanada Pipelines Limited has cancelled several major Canadian projects worth tens of billions of dollars.

In 2016, TransCanada Pipelines capital invest-

ment in natural gas pipelines was evenly split between Canada and the US, but in 2017 nearly 60 per cent of capital spend was based in the US. Perhaps more alarming are the statistics on construction spend for new natural gas projects.

In 2016, 46 per cent of spend was in Canada and 54 per cent in the US. In 2017, only 20 per cent of spend was in Canada an 80 per cent was in the US. As we have observed, there’s an urgent need for regulatory reform, especially in Alberta, where red tape is steadily strangling a major contributor to Canada’s economy. The Ernst and Young report makes that red tape graphically understandable.

But 14:1 is a somewhat shocking ratio. Morgan notes the root of the problem, which is “regulatory layering,” citing a report by Ernst & Young (commissioned for the Canadian Energy Pipeline Association).

One chart from the report (see bottom of this post) reveals the depth of regulatory layering, specifically in Alberta and British Columbia, including a large boom in regulation in 2016 and a proliferation of overlapping regulations. The report should serve as a wakeup call, with shocking findings.

The best Easter eggs are made from chocolate

April Town of Asquith Council News Asquith Town Council held their regular council meeting on April 10.

Attending were Mayor Gail Erhart, Councillors Harold Edwards, Jeff Eide, Dylan Claypool, Ted Goodnough and Sue Sawicki. Also attending were CAO Holly Cross, Administrative Assistant Kathy Picketts and Foreman Darren Kraft.

The meeting was called to order at 7 p.m.

A resolution was made to accept the March 13 regular council meeting minutes as presented.

The March 2019 financial statements and the March bank reconciliations were presented to the Council and a motion was made to accept them as presented.

paid report of $30,361.47 and the accounts payable report of $34,405.70 as presented.

Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities announced Potash Tax Sharing Distribution for 2019. Asquith will be receiving $22,063.80 for 2019.

The Town of Asquith will be sponsoring the Spring Clothing Swap this year, as requested by Bethany Drapak. Council has approved for paying of the rental of the senior hall and will be providing coffee and refreshments.

Minister of Government Relations sent a notice that Asquith will be receiving $132,406 in 2019 Revenue Sharing.

Education Mill Rates were set for 2019 as Agricultural Property – 1.43

Graham Contracting was awarded the contract for street sweeping in the Town of Asquith.

Shades of the past Old Tex and I slept out last night.

We made our camp as darkness fell,

By Eagle Rapids, churning white.

Against their cut-bank sentinel!

Upon a meadow, green and small, I stalked him to a willow tree, And let the brown saddle fall Beside my bedroll wearily.

I hope that reading these lines again doesn’t bore the reader. But it does remind me clearly

of a past that mebbe isn’t coming again, making me remember a fading past!

These lines aren’t to remind a person of cowboys and their times, as it is meant to recall that feeling of the past, that men and women have had with horses. A feeling that all along thru our lives, we have somehow missed!

Steel Ross told me some time ago that there wasn’t much wrong with a boy that having a horse couldn’t cure!

Times have changed!

This part of the world depended on horses.

Now it depends on tractors! (“There is nothing much wrong with a boy that caring for a tractor can’t fix.”)

A lot of us have lost something when we realized that “horse-sense” was a real thing! There must be thousands of instances to prove that!

Slowly, though, it is happening!

Zane Gray and General George Patton have done their bit to keep it alive, but race tracks and rodeos are two of the

remaining places where the horses get most of the attention! There are a few riding clubs, however, seeing that the “horsesense” of our time doesn’t disappear!

Let’s hope that they keep on!

Below are a few of the past stories about horses – there must be thousands!

Art had too much to drink! Before he started home, he had hitched two horses to hall some wheat to town and ended up in the beer parlour. It was a cold winter night and his brother Len waited for the sleigh to enter the yard.

A while later the team pulled into the yard and kept running past.

Len knew that they usually stopped so he went out to the stable where he found the horses still hitched to the sleigh.

Art was nowhere in sight.

Len put on a winter coat and drove back up the road to town, where he found Art, who had fallen asleep in a snow bank!

He was woozy, but alive!

If the horses had stopped by the house it would have been a different Bob Mason story!

In the second story, our neighbour, a fellow named Bob, started across the fields with a sleigh full of people.

A while later he rapped on our door.

“For gosh sakes,” sez Dad. “Don’t try and steer the team of horses pulling the sleigh! Get on the trail and then wrap the reins around the front of the sleigh box. Then the horses will take you right home!”

Our neighbour did! And got safely home!

Pensive Patio

Horses have been around long before Ben Hur drove down the fairway of the Coliseum in Rome. But out here in Saskatchewan they have almost disappeared.

There are still a few animals around here and there but, believe me, we are going to miss them!

Seeing that this bit is about “horse-sense”, mebbe it is okay to tell this one again!

One of our “riders” had trained a colt to take one step to the left when feeling a foot in the stirrup, more or less moving towards you, the horse ending up beneath you.

One of the local girls wanted to ride him, so we saddled up! The girl didn’t know this, put one foot in the stirrup and hesitated as she asked a question. Tex took one step toward her and she ended up on the ground under him.

Walt and Y.T. laughed – she didn’t! She never spoke to us for the next week!

I hear that she married a “young” fellow down near Watrous somewhere!

Stories and Easter Reverend Sharon Ferguson-Hood, Biggar United Church Jan L. Richardson in her book, In Wisdom’s Path, says “Elie Wiesel who survived the Holocaust and has spent the rest of his life turning its horrors into stories, she says that God created people because God loves stories. We are the vessels of God’s voice, the words blowing through us. Bidding us to tell the tales that only we can speak.”

I agree with Richardson that story telling is important. It gives us opportunity to tell stories about our created order, and about our hurts and joys.

It’s also a time to tell our stories about how we create meaning for our Easter experience.

I want to share this story with you. It is

years ago on a Maundy Thursday and I drive to Saskatoon to pick up my family for the Easter holiday. Driving back to the Pastoral Charge in rural Saskatchewan I sit in the back seat with my threeyear-old Granddaughter, Katie.

She says to me, “Granny tell me the Easter story!”

I tell her the story as I remember it from the Gospel of Luke.

Sunday morning comes and we all go to church.

When it comes time for the children to come to the front of the church for Children’s time in church, Katie is the first one at the front. I ask them, “Who can tell me about the meaning of Easter?”

Katie waves her hand high and said, “I can Granny, I can, I can!”

“Okay, Katie.” I said, “You tell us the meaning of Easter.”

She pauses for a long moment and then very emphatically she says, “Last night the Easter bunny came, and he left eggs and then he died,” She paused again, and then continued, “but he will come again, and again and again. He will die again, and come again. And the girls, they came too.”

The importance of this is, of course, that she knows the story. A bit of character confusion but she has the story right.

She was 23-years-old last Wednesday and she texted me to say of course you can tell that story in the Biggar Newspaper and of course you can use my name. She went on to say, that she will use her birthday money to go surfing. She is in Perth, Australia finishing up her degree from Ryerson University. She only goes to church with

her Grandmother on occasion but, she knows the Easter story. Her version at least, the one where you must celebrate life. The one where resurrection is always a possibility.

The one where joy counts and so does sorrow.

Desease a continuing concern in hog world

by Calvin Daniels It was in February I wrote about the swine sector appearing to be under the threat of what would be its version of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), at least in terms of it having the same effect on markets.

African swine fever is a disease in hogs which currently has the world market for pigs and pork on edge. It spreads through close contact with infected animals or their excretions, or through feeding uncooked contaminated meat to susceptible pigs. African swine fever affects only pigs and presents no human health or food safety risks.

The disease is definitely sending a shudder through the swine sector of a world-wide basis.

April oil and gas public offering raises $1.5 million The April public offering of Saskatchewan’s Crown petroleum and natural gas rights held on April 9, the first offering of the 2019-20 fiscal year, raised a total of $1.5 million for the province and was focused on the Swift Current area.

The public offering on April 9 saw 38 leases purchased, totalling 5,595.875 hectares. The Swift Current area received the most attention, with 14 leases, totalling 2,106.288 hectares, being sold for $914,349.97. On both a fiscal and calendar year basis, Saskatchewan continues to post the highest average-per-hectare revenues among the western provinces - a clear indicator of Saskatchewan’s continuing competitive-

ness and status as a jurisdiction of choice for the industry. “Industry sources frequently identify Saskatchewan as having a very attractive operating environment and fiscal regime,� Energy and Resources Minister Bronwyn Eyre said. “We are also home to some of the best and most costeffective conventional oil and gas development opportunities you will find anywhere. This parcel, which also received the highest dollars per hectare at $1,710.90 per hectare, was purchased by Millennium Land (444) Ltd. which was the top bidder in this public offering, picking up four leases totalling 912.976 hectares for $416,196.81.

The scheduled date for the next public offering will be June 4, 2019.

Certainly protecting the export oriented sector in Canada is paramount and it is to be hoped the caution being exhibited bares out for the future on the swine business.

Playoff hockey offers no guarantees Last week you may have read in this space a whimsical suggestion that Tampa Bay Lightning couldn’t possibly be beaten in the Stanley Cup playoffs.

There are no such guarantees, of course, no matter how many regular-season records a team might set or tie (most wins in an NHL season, for one).

The reality is that games are won on the ice, not in newspaper columns, and this season’s two-month run to the June conclusion has a number of interesting sidebars.

Like, who doesn’t like the St. Louis Blues to win the West? The hottest team in the league during the second half of the season, the Blues were dead last in the league when they replaced coach Mike Yeo with Craig Berube and suddenly turned things around. How can the Calgary Flames not be favoured to win the

West? They racked up more points than anyone in the conference (107) and got there by a solidly balanced offensive attack — five players each with more than 20 goals and 60 points. Mark Giordano is expected to win the Norris trophy as the league’s best defenceman and if the Flames had a reliable goalie like St. Louis does in Jordan Binnington, they might coast to the West title. But neither Mike Smith nor David Rittich inspires a great deal of confidence, and goaltending could be their Achilles heel.

Who isn’t secretly rooting for Canada’s team, the Toronto Maple Leafs, to win their first Stanley Cup since 1967? With the addition of free-agent John Tavares, who lived up to the hype with a 47-goal season, the Leafs are at least a contender, but they’re sloppy defensively and defence wins in the post-season.

Speaking of Canadian teams, who doesn’t feel a bit sorry for Montreal Canadiens, the only nonplayoff team to have a positive goal differential this year?

The Habs and their 94 points would have easily qualified for the playoffs in the West, but there is more power in the East and 94 points just didn’t cut it.

So who other than Tampa, St. Louis or Calgary could possibly win the Cup? Never count out the defending champs, so there’s a vote for Washington. Sidney Crosby and the Penguins had a so-so year but playoffs are a different deal. Boston is healthy and the Bruins had as

many points as Calgary, so why not? Nashville and Winnipeg have playoff experience and could pull off an upset.

Vegas got a taste of lateseason play last year, and they’re flying under the radar this year.

The veteran-laden San Jose Sharks have loads Bruce Penton of playoff experience.

The rest? It would be a real shock if Dallas, Colorado, Islanders, Carolina, Columbus or Toronto stood tallest in midJune. They’re probably all in next-year country.

First resilience report measures province’s readiness for climate change The Government of Saskatchewan released its first climate resilience report April 10, with measures that demonstrate how the province is increasing resilience to climate change.

The report covers five key areas: natural systems, physical infrastructure, economic sustainability, community preparedness and human well-being.

The Climate Resilience Measurement Framework, released in November 2018, is a commitment in the province’s Prairie Resilience climate change strategy. This first report identifies targets, baselines, historical trends and the current status for 25 measures of resilience.

The measures are classified in one of three ways:

good (showing desired trend), fair (maintaining or mixed trend) or poor (undesirable trend). “Resilience to a changing climate is just as important as reducing our own provincial emissions,� Environment Minister Dustin Duncan said. “Assessing and improving on these 25 measures will help people and communities across the province to cope with, adapt to and recover from the inevitable stresses of climate change and extreme weather.�

Fifteen resilience measures in the report are classified as good and are demonstrating anticipated trends. Most of the measures listed under natural systems and economic sustainability are

in good standing, including the following: • Saskatchewan continues to sequester significant amounts of soil organic matter, an indicator of soil productivity and carbon sequestered in provincial soil. • We are increasing the number of culverts on the national highway system to meet a new provincial flood standard.

This makes the province’s transportation network more resilient to extreme weather events. • We are reducing the intensity of greenhouse gas emissions per unit of gross domestic product, which indicates our industries are becoming more environmentally efficient and cost-effective. • We are increasing the

area of Crown land with wildfire fuel management practices, which reduces the risk of wildfire to northern communities.

Seven measures in the report are classified as fair, providing opportunities to reinforce the province’s resilience to climate change, including: • Efforts will continue to increase the amount of renewable energy sources as part of our provincial electricity mix, with a goal of up to 50 per cent of provincial electricity generation capacity from renewables by 2030. • We will increase the number of communities with active surveillance for mosquito- and tick-borne disease, both indicators of changing climates and conditions.

• We will continue to look at options to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions from government-owned buildings. “The overall status of the measures is encouraging,â€?

Duncan said. “This report indicates where we are demonstrating desirable results, and also where we may need to improve going forward to keep communities and families protected from the impacts of climate change.�

The province will con-

tinue to track and annually report on the climate resilience measures to better understand Saskatchewan’s resilience to climate change, and to identify areas of further focus and improvement.

New Horizons Activities

by Chasity Braitenbach The tulips in front of New Horizons are starting to come up, which is lovely.

As I type this on Monday, I worry that I may be speaking too soon by crossing my fingers that we don’t get any more snow.

On the afternoon of Monday April 1 we had Kaiser with a turnout of eight people. The first place winner was Geoff Cooke with a score of 208, second place was a tie between Isla Solanik and Marie Roesch with a score of 162 each and in third place was Pat Turner with a score of 156. The highest scoring game was played by Geoff Cooke and Grant Gamble with 65 points.

We had our monthly Birthday Potluck on April 8 with an attendance of 34 people. The half-nhalf winner for the day was June Hoppe. I’d like to wish a very happy birthday to: Dianne Bayet, Robert Carruthers, Donna Fines, Mildred Fast, Grant Gamble, Hugh Hammond, Donna Hoogeveen, Emily Liska, Harvey Moncrief, Sheila Pickett, Marcella Schommer, Doreen Silvernagle, Agnes Small and Anne VandeVelde.

Seniors’ Bowling at the bowling alley has concluded for the season and they had a windup supper on April 9 at New Horizons. Eastern Star hosted a Soup and Sandwich at New Horizons on April 10. On Thursday April

11 Bax Empire brought a huge selection of clothing to New Horizons and were very popular as per usual.

The April 11 bingo was held downstairs while the hall was being used for the clothing sale and we had a turnout of 12 players. The half-n-half bingo game was won by a tie between Linda Vermette and Agnes Watson and the blackout game had a three way tie between Betty Mundt, Evelyn Poletz and Michelle Champagne. The Lenten services at New Horizons concluded on April 12.

There was a great turnout to all of the Lenten services and I hope the churches were able to take home lots of donations.

Government supports increased stroke public awareness and education

The Government of Saskatchewan is providing funding in the 2019-20 Budget to the Heart and Stroke Foundation to boost their FAST public awareness campaign – allocating an additional $50,000 to get the FAST message out to Saskatchewan residents. “We want people to be able to quickly identify the signs of a stroke and understand that receiving emergency care is critical,� Health Minister Jim Reiter said. “The Heart and Stroke Foundation has had great success with their FAST campaign, that is why our government has committed $50,000 in this year’s budget to support their good work.� “Over the last decade, stroke care in Saskatchewan has improved, but

incidences of stroke have increased,� Manitoba and Saskatchewan Heart and Stroke Foundation CEO Allison Kesler said. “It is more important than ever for people of all ages to know what a stroke looks like and how to get help.

I commend the Government of Saskatchewan for this important investment that furthers their commitment to provide individuals with the best care and outcomes.�

Since 2014, the FAST campaign has successfully improved public recognition of stroke signs across Canada. The campaign also urges people to call 911 immediately if they - or the person they are with - are showing signs of a stroke. Calling 911 triggers a provincial “stroke alert�, which allows health care work-

ers at stroke centres to prepare to treat a stroke when the patient arrives.

Stroke is a medical emergency and people experiencing a stroke should never drive themselves to the hospital. Patients arriving by ambulance receive more timely treatment than those driving themselves, and faster treatment lessens damage to the body – especially the brain.

A stroke happens when blood stops flowing to any part of your brain, damaging brain cells. The effects of a stroke depend on the part of the brain that was damaged and

the amount of damage done.

Approximately 1,700 people are hospitalized for stroke every year in Saskatchewan, with about 300 of those cases resulting in death. Statistically, the majority of people who experience stroke and make it to the hospital have better prospects for survival and recovery today than they did even five years ago. These improvements have come as a result of research that shows outcomes are greatly improved when early signs of stroke are recognized and treatment is sought quickly.

by Leanne Gruending I have absolutely cherished my time at LAS. Over my six years, I have had the chance to get to know so many amazing students and their families.

I feel like we have taken some incredible steps towards creating a school that is rich with innovative practices, caring adults and deeply believes

in the impact a strong parent/school partnership has on learning. I’m not only incredibly proud of the staff and students, but they have become like a family to me.

It is with a very heavy heart that I need to share some news. My fiancee, Ray, and I always had the plan to build a family here and I even had hoped that someday our

children would be able to attend LAS. However, we recently found out that it’s likely we may not be able to have a family of our own, so we have decided to move to Edmonton where he has a daughter to be closer to her and be a significant part of her life.

This decision is one of the hardest I’ve ever had to make. I absolutely love

the students, staff and community of Asquith.

LAS has truly been my home and leaving it breaks my heart. I’m so incredibly proud of the work we have done over the years and I know that the students of LAS are in good hands with the fabulous staff we have at the school.

A very successful soup, bunwich, dessert and refreshments was held at the Biggar New Horizons, April 10 to help people become more aware of Acacia Chapter No. 3 Order of the Eastern Star in Biggar. Bookmarks were handed out with a short history of Eastern Star. The Order is a charitable organization with guide dogs being the latest project, hoping to supply dogs to children with autism. They are always hoping for more members.

On April 14, Eastern Star held their annual Church Parade at St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Biggar, at the time of their regular service. Thirteen members of Eastern Star were present. Worthy Matron, Bev Otsuka, Worthy Patron Jim Reid and Associate Grand Matron, Cheryl Rann all took part in the service. by Save-on-Foods (a western Canada grocery store chain) and by a local vineyard: Mt. Lehman Winery. I donated my time, and YES CHEF donated the facility and staff to pull off this stunt.

Clarence then bumbled his way through the menu with ingredients such as boxed KraftDinner randed macaroni and cheese with cans of seafood, whole roasted chickens with oranges squeezed over them, bottled salad dressing, and premade chocolate cakes that he shaped into a volcano with red â&#x20AC;&#x153;lavaâ&#x20AC;? raspberry jam coming out of the top.

The main message we wanted to get out to people is to have fun in the kitchen no matter what your level of ability is. Food is life quite literally, and unless you win the lotto (and hire somebody to do it for you) you

are going to be cooking for the rest of your life, so you may as well find a way to make it fun and enjoyable.

Overall it was a great time had by all, but I

donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think Clarence will be making any more repeated cooking appearances anytime soon. Chef Dez will take it from here.

Local businesses provide value to the community Tbink about the many events which happen in the community. Now, think about who helps to sponsor those events. It’s not something you might think about on a daily basis but local businesses provide value to the community in ways that are immeasurable.

Local businesses have proudly donated items or purchased advertising in programs. They participated by attending these events. There were no donations from Facebook, Amazon or Google. There were no representatives on hand at the events. These mega companies did not purchase ad space in programs.

was out taking pictures of the events. Stories and pictures were printed in the paper following the events. The advertisers pay the salaries of everyone who works at the paper. A simple Coming Event reaches a whopping 82 per cent of people in the 40 mile radius. Social media reaches only six per cent. People and advertisers trust what is printed in the paper.

The advertisers that you see on this page are some of our most dedicated clients and advertisers. They work hard to build the community. It’s about supporting what you believe in -- a vibrant, growing community. Google, Proud local businesses are the Facebook and heart of all communities; without Amazon don’t do them the economy would slowly that.

So, before you post an ad on social media or shop online, think about the value and impact local businesses give back to the community. Then think about what those online stores give back.
