The Kids in the Kitchen program junior chefs were cooking up a storm last week - as they have for the past number of weeks! Tasty and healthy snacks and meals - plus a whole lot of fun for all involved! A big pat on the back goes to the Biggar and District Family Centre for making the sessions a possibility for all kids in our community. From the smell, it looks - and tastes - like a success!

Dry spring conditions has Rural Fire Association urging caution

The Biggar and District Rural Fire Association would like to remind you to take time to be aware of fire risk this spring.

The snow is gone and last year’s growth is waiting for a carelessly thrown cigarette, a hot spark from equipment or a bit of burning to ‘clean up’ some garden trash.

Don’t do it!

Your friends and neighbours are part of our volunteer fire fighting response and you don’t want to be responsible for putting them in danger or causing major damage to your community.

Spring is a windy season. Even burns done in the winter may still be smouldering. Make sure they are buried before you get busy in the field and a change in wind direction starts the country on fire.

If you are going to burn anything, call the Controlled Burn Number: 1-866-404-4911.

Fighting fire is expensive and false calls cost you money. Someone driving on the highway with a cell phone will call in the smoke they see. Even if you are having a wiener roast where people will see the smoke, you are risking the expense of a false alarm. When you are renewing your farm insurance, make sure you have fire fighting costs covered in your policy in the range of $15,000. Check

with your agent to make sure your equipment will be insured fighting fire on your neighbours land.

When fires get away in the country, they can take several calls to get put out and people have experienced large bills.

Once the fear of frost is gone, please keep a water tank on hand from now until the snow flies. If you are welding out on the prairie, have your water tank close by.

Fighting fire in the country is best tackled with water and cultivating or disc equipment. If your neighbour has a fire and you are on the way to help, please check with the fire response to see where you can help the best with the least risk to yourself and your equipment. Smoke is dangerous for visibility and for tractor motors. Your cell phone is your best tool to stay connected to the fire response.

The Fire Association has purchased a new fire truck and expects to have it delivered this fall. We will keep you posted as to when it will be here.

The best fire response is being fire conscious and not starting a fire in the first place, but there are all kinds of things that happen from birds on a power line to car accidents that can get one started. If you have made major changes in your

FTB Parts opened their doors Friday, and the automotive, semi and trailer parts specialty store celebrated with specials and door prizes for area customers, plus a barbecue, courtesy of the local 4-H. Owners Darlene and Mike Nahorney, manager Jim Grobb, Customer Sales yard, drop by the fire station or your R.M. and update your yard map, so if the volunteer force has to fight fire in your yard, they will know what they are facing.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank our fire fighting force, both town and rural volunteers. Their dedication to this work and commitment to training is priceless. Please take care out there and look at your yard and remove sources of fuel for fires that could affect your safety.

Masked thieves rob Landis business On April 19 at approximately 6 a.m., a Landis business owner was surprised by the presence of a masked male.

The male, armed with a piece of metal, demanded that the business owner turn over money in the cash registers. Two masked female accomplices, also came into the business.

The male and his two accomplices searched the business, and forced the owner to let them into the attached residence where they located and stole the victim’s hunting rifle. The suspects then restrained the victim and stole a large quantity of liquor from the business before leaving the scene in the victim’s vehicle. The victim was later able to get free and call 911.

The victim was not injured.

The investigation is ongoing and Unity RCMP are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the persons responsible for this crime. They are asking the public to be on the lookout for a grey 2007 GMC Sierra 1500 with the Saskatchewan plate, 717 IUI. As a firearm was taken during the event, RCMP are warning the public not to approach the vehicle should it be located, and to immediately call the local police of jurisdiction.

Final concert of the Arts Council season this Wednesday The final concert in the Biggar and District Arts Council’s performance season is this Wednesday, April 27 with Toronto-based acappella group, Eh440.

Eh440 started harmonizing together in 2012.

Using just their voices, this group has wowed audiences across the USA and Canada.

Their journey really started over a decade and half ago.

As kids, Janet Turner and Stacey Kay used to compete against each other in singing contests.

The first time they met, Stacey was just 8 years old and Janet a little older.

Over the years they each took their turn winning various contests and even though some competitors took it a little too seriously, they actually cheered on the other and became lifelong friends.

Luke Stapleton (aka Human Record) started beat-boxing as a kid too.

Coming from a “show biz” family, Luke would listen to his dad play the drums in their house and recreate the sounds using his only his mouth.

Mike Celia and Joe Oliva started their musical journeys a little later than the other three. Already into their teens, Mike taught himself to play guitar and sing while Joe joined his

high school choir, just for fun, in his final year.

After coming together through the Toronto Independent Music Awards and mutual musician-friends, Eh440 was born - their first gig was performing the national anthems for the Valentine’s Day 2012 Toronto Raptors vs. New York

Knicks NBA game. Singing in an arena before 20,000 people? Pretty good first gig!

So, Eh440 is a mix of five people from five very different backgrounds and musical genres. Joe’s been a low bass singer his entire life, Luke’s an urban beat-boxer, Janet identifies as a country/ pop singer, Stacey’s soul/ pop, and if that isn’t confusing enough, Mike’s even more of a musical chameleon who cites blues, folk, and “anything with a good groove” as his influences.

Together they form an unforgettable combination of crazy beat-boxing, sassy rapping, killer harmonies, and fresh, urban, R and B-influenced compositions.

Potholes, warm temps signs of spring As the temperatures warm up everyone’s thoughts turn to spring and summer activities. We should be thankful the mercury has climbed in a relatively short time. For the last week it was possible to sit out on the deck in the evening without a jacket. Unusual for April. Not only sitting out but being able to barbecue and eat outside.

On Tuesday, Manitobans elected a Tory government sending the NDP down to defeat and causing yet another NDP leader to resign. It’s too bad Alberta is not on board. Having the Prairies with one united voice would have sent a strong message to Ottawa -- this region would have made a formidable and strong voice.

Farmers are also busy preparing for another growing season. In fact, there is some combining happening as there were some crops left out over the winter.

An unusual sight to be seen in April but it does happen.

As spring approaches there is also evidence of potholes. On the streets around town and on the highways. CAA has its Worst Roads Campaign going on and this week Highway 51 to Kerrobert was top of the list. Not surprising to those who drive that highway frequently. This is not the first year to make the list but hopefully this is the year that it will be repaired. Not to say there hasn’t been some progress made in road repairs but there is much more that needs to be done.

According to CAA, Canadians said they spent on average $360 on pothole damages. In Saskatchewan, drivers paid more for pothole damage, on average $500 per year. Canadians said they had to repair their vehicle three times in the last five years because of pothole damage. In Saskatchewan, drivers required repairs more often, more than four times in the last five years.

Who suffers most from high energy prices in Canada?

We all know that humans consume a lot of energy. It lets us cook our food, heat our homes, clean our clothes, and get to work. In fact, using energy to convert resources and provide goods

But prices for energy goods such as electricity have risen quickly over the last 10 years, outpacing growth in the price of other goods. And Canadian families only recently received some relief on their gasoline bills as the falling oil price has rippled through the economy.

High energy bills for basic energy needs such as heating, lighting and running appliances are a substantial expense and burden for Canadian households. In a recent study, we estimated how many Canadian households were living in energy poverty—where energy constitutes 10 per cent or more of household expenses.

We found that in 2013 (the last year of available data), nearly eight per cent of Canadian households were in energy poverty, just based on their expenses for the energy they use within the home.

When we include gasoline expenses, almost 20 per cent of Canadian households were in energy poverty. That’s about one in five Canadian house-

holds seeing 10 per cent or more of their expenses devoted just to the energy they require for their daily lives.

But who is hardest hit by pricey power and energy poverty? The poor, of course.

The below chart shows that almost 16 per cent of households earning $27,000 or less, and almost 17 per cent of households earning between $27,000 and $47,700, were in energy poverty when only considering expenditures on energy used within the household. While the 2013 estimates for households in the $27,000 or less income group are slightly lower than in 2010, energy poverty has increased in the $27,000 to $47,700 household income group by 34 per cent.

When gasoline expenditures are considered, the costs faced by lower-income households are striking. In 2013, 30 per cent of households earning $27,000 or less, and almost 28 per cent of households earning between $27,000 and $47,700, had to devote 10 per cent or more of their expenditures to energy.

That’s a costly burden for many lowerincome families.

Canada stands in the midst of major changes to our energy systems; some changes driven by technology, but others driven by environmental and climate policies. Many of these policies have the potential to raise the costs of power, and policymakers should carefully consider how those policy choices could exacerbate problems faced by families, particularly lower-income households, who are already in energy poverty or those on the cusp of energy poverty.

New Horizons Activities

by Janice Foley It is getting much quieter around the building these days, as the lovely weather encourages our members to enjoy the fresh air and sunshine.

A little tidbit of information regarding the Courtesy Car. In March we booked 140 more calls for the month than we did in 2015. What a valuable service this is to our community. Our dedicated volunteer drivers do their very best to get you where you are going in a timely fashion.

It certainly can be a challenge on the busiest of days.

A nice sized group of 12 players showed up for Carpet Bowling this past week. At the end of the day, the first place team players were Marie Roesch, Dinah Kegler and Darryl Smith. The team in second place consisted of Pat Turner, Nicole Otterson and

Florence Hammond.

The last day of shuffleboard is done for the season. Mark your calendars now for the first day of play in the fall -- Wednesday, October 5. Marie has been the organizer of this activity and her time has been greatly appreciated. The first place team this week was Martin and Ed Lanz. Second place was Marie Roesch and Jean Tweddle. Third was Nicole Otterson and in fourth Mildred Henne and Aileen Smith.

On Friday evening, two of our members Bill Fisher and Ken Pearce welcomed the Force of the Youth Group to our facility. The youth and their two leaders spent the evening learning how to play, and playing pool and shuffleboard. We look forward to having them return for more fun and games in the fall.

George Bush and Bill Clinton both signed a Presidential Message recognizing April 10 as Siblings Day but for it to be considered an official holiday similar to Mother’s Day and Father’s Day a presidential proclamation is needed.

Since 1998, 85 governors have signed proclamations in 49 states. As for Canada there is no official movement at this time.

Siblings Day is similar in spirit to Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Grandparent’s Day. It is a way to honour the relationships shared by brothers and sisters -- also a celebration of family values. A sibling relationship is every bit as important as parents.

In fact, without children Mother’s Day or Father’s Day wouldn’t be celebrated.

There are other notable celebrities who have come out for Siblings Day. Oprah Winfrey featured and celebrated Siblings Day on her television show for three years. Her show reached national and international audiences. The day has been celebrated in Northern India, Guyana in South Africa and several south Asian countries for years.

April 10 was National Siblings Day. It’s not official and the movement is primarily in the United States but social media knows no boundaries and the posts have reached worldwide.

National Siblings Day is a holiday recognized in some parts of the United States. It honours the relationship of siblings. The origin of the movement is attributed to Claudia Evart who wanted to honour the memory of her brother and sister who passed away at an early age. She created the Siblings Day Foundation.

The bonds formed by siblings are life lasting. The relationship between siblings will last longer sometimes that those with your mother or father. Your siblings are there from the start -- cradle to grave so to speak.

Jane Mersky Leder says, “Our siblings push buttons that cast us in roles we felt sure we had let go of long ago - the baby, the peacekeeper, the caretaker, the avoider.... It doesn’t seem to matter how much time has elapsed or how far we’ve traveled.”

But it all seems so very long ago.”

As a matter of fact, believe it or not, we even went to school.

“I walked away from the old school where part of my life had passed For I know that the years of my spring time had come to an end at last.

And I left the stump of the old school sitting among the trees.”

The next ten years were kind of sad (in a way) but we’ve got to take the bad with the good.

“He said goodbye with a wave of halfhearted And said “giddap” to his tired team He looked back once as his horses started Then drove away from a dying dream.”

Whole books have been written about that ten year long depression and though Yours Truly doesn’t know how the book balancing people saw it, personally it was one of the better times of our lives.

So we moved. Dad threw in the towel; left his homestead and took his family with him.

Before the war we had a few good years down there. All was well we thought. Y.T. made of few horseback trips back to our old country. “Old Tex”, our riding pony had been raised on Valley Springs Ranch at Borden.

“Old Tex and I slept out last night, the hills one

solid silhouette’ Here, hesitating, as I write, I think I can remember yet The harsh sight across the land, the gentle hooves on the sod At peace we curled in nature’s hand - no rolling in the land of God Crested as the rest of these, last night beside our dying blaze I felt akin the summer breeze that rustled at my saddle stays Beneath my blanket’s humble thread I felt that all the world was right.”

And then, just as we were getting organized again, guess what? Mr. Hitler moved into the Rhineland.

As some of these lines say.

“That dead man in the ditch back there was Glavin from out west.

Out west, you say?

How far away from where the sun went down?

A million miles or more I think. No one has ever guessed.

How far a European war is from a prairie town.”

Jack Glavin, and Argyll friend of mine for a few months of war killed just across the Kusten Kanal in Germany and is buried in the Canadian cemetery at Holten in Holland.

Jack came from Liebenthal, Saskatchewan.

On Christmas Eve 1944 a couple of us had just come in from night patrol when we heard singing voices come from an old busted up house.

When we went in there were about 10 Canadian soldiers gathered around an old piano singing carols. Ten years later while climbing into a bus in Toronto a fellow stopped me and said “I’ve seen you before. Somewhere.”

We went back and sat together.

“And those grizzled hands that were on his

lap reached out in the tender glow Of a keyboard white in the candlelight of a dozen men or so Those grizzled knotted and gnarly hands so haunting a sound to leave Till I ducked then tight and gilled outright “Why Buck, it was Christmas Eve It was Christmas Eve on the Tilburg Road in that winter of 44” “I’ll see you again some place, he said. And I’m sorry I didn’t smile As he grabbed his luggage and charged ahead; alone in that empty aisle I saw his hand on the bus’s rail, shaking and kind of slow And wondered it is could roll the scale away it had been so long ago For although it seemed but a moment gone, the signs of that far off day Had slowly withered as time went on and finally passed away Leaving two lost and lonely men in whom comradeship at last.

Could only be brought life again by the ghost of a Christmas past.”

The war was finally over though. We came home and married the nicest girl in the country.

This week at Biggar Health Centre we started with Monday morning exercises. At 2:30 we played two rounds of Jeopardy. We learned some interesting facts, for example we didn’t know that dolphins sleep.

Tuesday morning we

had current events. We played Yahtzee that afternoon. Team Crocus played against Team Willow. The Crocus team won. Wednesday afternoon we played bean bag toss. In the evening we had Silverts clothing party.

Thursday morning was Bible Study, exercises and bingo.

Friday morning was

Pastor Mark and Friends.

We had barbecue club down Autumn. In the afternoon we had a game afternoon. The residents played kaiser, crib, memory and crokinole.

Saturday was Jackpot Bingo and coffee party.

Sunday morning was 1-1 time and PALs were here for church.

Bees demise linked to pesticides

by Calvin Daniels The hardworking honeybee is becoming a species which seems on the edge of the great debate about just what mankind may ultimately being doing to this planet.

Bees are one of those lynchpin species that should they face massive population declines the ripple effect would be rather devastating. “It has often been said that bees are responsible for one out of every three

bites of food we eat,� notes nativeplants.msu. edu. “Most crops grown for their fruits (including vegetables such as squash, cucumber, tomato and eggplant), nuts, seeds, fibre (such as cotton), and hay (alfalfa grown to feed livestock), require pollination by insects. Pollinating insects also play a critical role in maintaining natural plant communities and ensuring production of seeds in most flowering plants. Pollina-

tion is the transfer of pollen from the male parts of a flower to the female parts of a flower of the same species, which results in fertilization of plant ovaries and the production of seeds. The main insect pollinators, by far, are bees, and while European

by Calvin m o s t l y Daniels s o l i t a r y ground nesting species, that contribute some level of pollination services to crops and are very important in natural plant communities. “Bees make excellent pollinators because most of their life is spent collecting pollen, a source of protein that they feed to their developing offspring. When a bee lands on a flower, the hairs all over the bees’ body attract pollen grains through electrostatic forces. Stiff hairs on their legs enable them to groom the pollen into specialized brushes or pockets on their legs or body, and then carry it back to their nest. Individual bees tend to focus on one kind of flower at a time, which means it is more likely that pollen from one flower will be transferred to another flower of the same species by a particular bee.

Many plants require this kind of pollen distribution, known as crosspollination, in order to produce viable seeds. The business of collecting pollen requires a lot of energy, and so many flowers attract and also reward bees with nectar, a mixture of water and sugars produced by plants.�

But there are growing concerns that bees are being threatened. “In the past, many sci-

entists have struggled to find the exact reason for the massive deaths, a phenomenon they refer to as “colony collapse disorder� (CCD). For seven consecutive years, in the United States, honeybees are in fatal decline,� noted herbalhouse365.com.

The issue of CCD has even made it into popular culture as the theme of episodes on popular television shows such as Elementary.

The exact reason for CCD remains debate bale, although many point blame at neonicotinoids, or ‘neonics’. The European Union has gone so far as to ban the neonicotinoid class of pesticides.

The United States and Canada have not gone that far.

But when the HerbalHouse365 site reports an Ontario bee keeper, “Dave Schuit who produces honey in Elmwood lost about 37 million bees, which are about 600 hives,� the finger gets pointed rather quickly. “US scientists in samples of bees, wax and pollen have found 121 different pesticides, lending credence to the notion that pesticides are the key problem. “We believe that some subtle interactions between nutrition, pesticide exposure and other stressors are converging to kill colonies,� said Jeffery Pettis, of the ARS’s

To discount there may be a connection to neonicotinoid pesticides would seem folly, although the broader issue CCD is not likely confined to a single source problem.

But ultimately agriculture, government, scientists and society need to recognize CCD as a red flag warning sign that needs our attention now.

If not the results could be dire, as a report at theguardian.com notes. “There is an apocalyptic quote attributed to Albert Einstein (although there is no proof he actually said it). “If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe then man would only have four years left to live.� It resonates with people as a plausible consequence of the bee’s demise.

While the time scale is wildly exaggerated and fails to take into account man’s ingenuity, it highlights how mankind’s survival has been inextricably linked to bees, it states.

Nick Huculak

Yard Foreman in 1984.

Florence and Nick had eight children and they were raised in Scott, Landis and Biggar, Sask. before the children started on their own.

Nick after being widowed, married his second wife, Yohanna. After many years of marriage, Yohannaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s health started to fail and Nick became a constant caregiver until her passing. He then continued to live independently until his passing on April 10 , 2016.

Nick is survived by his children, Shirley (Bob) Darrach of Saskatoon, Sask. and children, Annette, Sherry, Greg; Robert (Karen) Huculak of Edmonton, Alta. and children, Brenda and Crystal; Paul Huculak of Edmonton, Alta.; Rose Huculak of Edmonton, Alta. and children, Kevin and Steven; Jim Huculak of Richmond, B.C.; Trudy (John) Banker of Cambridge, Ont. and children, Allissa and Cassidy; nine great-grandchildren; sisters, Liz Strong of Camrose, Alta., Shirley Hendrickson of Devon, Alta., Rita Bamule of Hinton, Alta.

He attended d school at Doddss District School,, four miles from m home. He then n transferred to o the Round Hill illl School for Grade rade e 2. He continued d th there until til Grade 8. At 15, he worked for an area farmer. When he was 16, he worked at the Black Nugget/North Star coal mine in Dodds. At 19, Nick enlisted in the army and was discharged 11 months later on November 23, 1945.

He then worked at the Blue Room Cafe in Camrose, Alta. where he met his fiancĂŠ, Florence. Florence and Nick were married in Camrose on May 9, 1946. He returned to work at the North Star coal mine with his Dad until going to work at the Canadian National Railroad as section man, April 29, 1948 in Hay Lakes. He retired from the CNR as the Biggar

Three fined for illegal hunting In early April, two men pleaded guilty in Weyburn provincial court to a number of hunting-related infractions and received $11,160 in fines.

This is in addition to $3,500 in fines for an earlier court date related to the same investigation.

During their investigation, conservation officers determined that one man had unlawfully shot multiple animals in an unsafe manner in the Weyburn area in 2013. The other individual disposed of the carcasses and was in possession of illegally taken wildlife.

“Those that unlawfully kill animals in our province take away the hunting opportunities of those who do follow the regulations,” Ministry of Environment Chief of Enforcement and Investigations Ken Aube said. “Future hunting opportunities depend on effective management of wildlife populations.”

Roger Brenton, aged 40, of Macklin, was fined $2,800 for unlawfully hunting moose, $2,100 for unlawfully hunting white-tailed deer, and $1,820 for exceeding possession of pheasants, all under The Wildlife Act. He was also fined $1,400 for shooting from a road at night under The Wildlife Regulations and $240 for not having a hunter’s safety course. In addition to the $8,360 in total fines, Brenton also received a three year hunting suspension.

Zach Payne, 32, a resident of Ignace, Ontario, pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting Brenton and received a $2,800 fine and one year hunting suspension.

In an earlier court date, Dave Bessette, 27, of Weyburn, pleaded guilty to possession of illegally taken wildlife and one count of aiding and abetting Brenton with the unlawful harvest of the moose and white-tailed deer. Bessette was fined a total of $3,500 and given a one year hunting suspension.

By receiving hunting suspensions in Saskatchewan, hunting privileges for these three individuals are also revoked in Alberta, Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

A firearm used in the offences, as well as all the meat seized, was forfeited to the Crown. The meat will be donated to a local food bank.

Praise for Braising

Have recent increases in the price of meat leave you with the thought of becoming a vegetarian?

With no disrespect to my vegetable eating friends, there is a great technique to bring extreme flavour and tenderness to cheaper cuts of meat. It’s called “braising”.

Braising is typically the process of first searing meat and then cooking it in a small amount of liquid at low temperatures for a long period of time.

This low and slow method, along with the added moisture, is the ideal environment for breaking down connective tissue and thus making the meat more tender. The residual liquid is almost always transformed into a serving sauce with the prepared meat.

Braising is used for both large cuts of meats and also for smaller individual cuts, with the main difference being the length of cooking time.

Stews are another great

example of braising.

Before the first step of searing, seasoning should be done. By seasoning before searing, the crust that is being created becomes more flavourful as the seasoning becomes part of the crust. This seasoning does not have to be complex. It’s as simple as a dusting of salt and pepper, or as intricate as you want it to be.

This flavourful browning of the meat will bring out incredible tastes in your finished dish.

The searing should be done at a high temperature in order to create brownness on the meat. If the temperature is too low, or if a pan is too crowded, then the initial escaping moisture from the meat will not evaporate, and thus the meat will just boil in its own juices instead of browning.

The cooking liquid chosen should be selected to

compliment the meat/ dish. The amount of liquid will be different for every application. Stews are usually submersed in liquid for the cooking time, while pot roasts, for example, usually have just enough liquid to cover the meat by one third to two thirds. Some individual cuts of meat, like pork chops, can be cooked with a lid with no added liquid. Just the trapped moisture in the meat itself may be enough for braising.

At the end of the cooking time, the residual cooking liquids can be easily transformed into

accompanying sauces by reducing, thickening, or a combination of both.

Before deciding how to finish your sauce, it will start with tasting. How are the flavours? How intense is it? If you decide that the flavours and intensity are sufficient,

then a simple thickening will do: enter in a dissolved cornstarch slurry and bring to a full boil.

If you find that the flavours and intensity are not sufficient, then boil the liquid as is, until it reduces through evaporation of water content.

Taste along the way and decide when the sauce is ideal. This may also involve adjusting and balancing the flavours along the way. Once the desired taste is achieved, examine the sauce to see if thickening is even required, as it may have thickened enough on its own during this reduction time.

Learning many cooking techniques are great to assist you in the kitchen by increasing your skillset, but nothing can replace the hands-on experience of practice.

Cook, be happy, know that you will make mistakes along the way, and enjoy life.

by Bruce Penton Mike Weir is not aging gracefully on the PGA Tour.

The most accomplished professional golfer in Canadian history - his major title at the 2003 Masters’ trumps any argument you might want to put forth - is limping to the finish line of his career as he tries to keep sharp in preparation for the 50-and-over Champions Tour.

Currently eligible on the regular Tour due to some major and minor medical exemptions, Weir had 2016 starts in eight tournaments guaranteed - and more if he won a certain amount of money.

That hasn’t come close to happening. Weir, who grew up in Sarnia, Ontario, but now lives in Utah and doesn’t contribute much to the growth of Canadian golf these days, is teeing it up Thursday and Fridays, but having no success.

In fact, in his last 21 PGA Tour starts, Weir has had four withdrawals and 17 missed cuts. His money earnings: Zero.

He hardly needs the money. His heyday on the Tour brought in $28 million U.S. and he still has enough cachet to cash in

on a variety of endorsements.

To date, Weir has used up six of his eight tournament exemptions and needs to have a couple of high finishes if he hopes to retain his eligibility for the rest of the 2016 season. He could still play in some minor league web. com tournaments, and will work on his game as much as possible until he becomes eligible for the no-cut Champions Tour in on his 50th birthday, May 12, 2020.

Weir has every right to take advantage of the favourable exempt-status rules to enter as many tournaments as allowed, but the 46-year-old veteran must find it a little embarrassing to miss cut after cut after cut while a young player looking to get his career started is bumped from play when Weir takes up one of the spots in the field.

At the RBC Heritage the week after the Masters, Weir withdrew after an opening-round 78 and South African Dawie van der Walt, who was second alternate, was not pleased, tweeting: “Gota (sic) love a guy who gets an invite into a Tour event and then WD after the first round,” using the hashtag, “#hangitupmike.”

By rough estimate, Weir has two more tournaments to play before his eligibility expires. Maybe lightning will strike and Weir will relive some golf course magic, but the likelihood is that after two more weeks of futility, it will another four

years before we hear Weir’s name again.
