The fickle weather of spring can bring warm hints of the summer to come or the wet cool of fall. Canada Geese have been making their way on to the waterways of our area, marking a sign of spring. The more colourful colours of spring are slow to make an arrival but what we have is certainly better than the monochromatic blandness of winter!

Lowest unemployment rate since 2015 and 9,800 new jobs According to a report issued April 5 by Statistics Canada, Saskatchewan’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 4.9 per cent last month, down from 6.0 per cent in March 2018 and 5.8 per cent in February 2019.

The unemployment rate was the second lowest in the country and well below the national average of 5.8 per cent. March’s unemployment was the lowest recorded in Saskatchewan since August 2015.

Year-over-year employment increased by 9,800 jobs from March 2018. This marks the eighth consecutive month of strong job gains for the province. The job gains were primarily full-time employment with full-time jobs up 9,200 from a year ago; part-time jobs were up 800. Jobs in the private sector were up 11,500 over the same period.

“With nearly 10,000 new jobs created in the last year, Saskatchewan employers are showing confidence in our economy in spite of the external headwinds we are facing,” Immigration and Career Training Minister Jeremy Harrison said. “We will continue to stand up for Saskatchewan people against federal policies that are destructive to Western Canadian jobs and that will

Time to welcome new businesses The past editorial about Fortune Minerals seemed to generate quite a bit of talk in some circles. Not just on coffee row either.

Attracting a business to a community is not an easy achievement. It takes a lot of hard work. Talks between stakeholders. Overcoming regulations (some of which are outdated). Finding the right fit for an industry. Searching our the right location. It is not something that is done overnight. So, when an entrepreneur does express an interest it is important everyone works together.

However, there will always be naysayers. There will always be those that don’t want a business to set up. The reasons may be varied, indeed some

of them may not even be relevant.

The important thing is to keep an open mind. it is like anything else when a decision had to be made. Find out all the facts and make a decision. The key word here is facts. Not hearsay. Not opinions from the past. Not personal biases. Facts.

Keep in mind what may not have worked in the past may not necessarily be true today. There are more technologies in place. There are state of the art facilities. There is more research being done. Times have changed.

Again, it’s all about hearing the facts, keep an open mind. That way it can be a win-win for everyone.

Canola farmers caught in the crossfire from China

by Sarah Pittman, policy analyst at the Canada West Foundation.

Any farmer in Western Canada will be able to tell you that China’s decision to cut off imports of Canada’s canola is alarming.

The Prairies are particularly exposed — in 2018, Canada sold nearly $4 billion worth of canola seed and oil to China alone.

But beyond the threat to this massive industry — which delivers a not insignificant $26.7 billion in jobs, spending and other economic impacts to the Canadian economy — there are implications, both political and economic, for the overall relationship as a whole and going forward.

China is Canada’s

second-largest trading partner, after the United States — and the volume of this trade is growing. A deteriorating economic relationship with China carries risk for all of Canada.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said this week that Canada is considering sending a high-level delegation to China over the canola dispute. The delegation should consider several questions about the scope and nature of this problem if it is to make any headway.

First, to what extent is this dispute actually about canola?

Political tensions between Canada and China have been simmering for months since Canadian officials arrested Huawei

CFO Meng Wanzhou upon request of American officials. China has exerted significant political pressure on Canada because of this, as it has in trying to get Canada to allow Huawei to be part of building Canada’s 5G network.

So far, the pressure has largely been in the political and humanitarian realm. If the canola ban has to do with Meng, or Huawei generally, it would be the first real economic fallout Canada has suffered because of it. Indeed, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesman seemed to make the link when holding a press conference on the canola issue, saying Canada should “take practical

In 2017, Canada provided 98.7% of China’s canola seed supply, and unlike other crops that China imports like soy — which has at least two major global suppliers — for canola, Canada is the only large-scale global producer.

Perhaps the most difficult question to resolve is what Canada’s policy response should be. With the last canola dispute, Canada and China reached an agreement that guaranteed access to the Chinese market until 2020. This worked, but clearly not for long. Perhaps another short-term solution is possible, but we should be

The final question delegates need to consider are the impacts on the future of the Canada-China relationship. It is a transformative moment for the relationship, as China is exerting its strength globally.

While this is a critical moment for Canada’s massive canola industry, it will also be crucial in determining where China and Canada go from here.

Our response has to deal not just with the current impasse but how to prepare for the next one — and hopefully next time, Prairie canola producers won’t be caught in the middle.

This is not the first time that China has put pressure on canola: In 2016, China cut the allowable dockage (organic debris in canola that is not canola, i.e., weeds) from 2.5% to 1%. That was a nearly impossible limit to reach – in effect, a ban that was ostensibly about preventing the spread of a canola disease, but in reality was about China’s surplus of canola and an attempt to drive down prices.

China does not ban imports that impose headaches for itself.

Tips to keep your downtime safe and healthy (NC) The home is often seen as a sanctuary: a place where we can escape.

Maybe you’re looking forward to watching a movie or to having family and friends over for supper. Maybe you’re planning on finishing up a few nagging chores or taking some well-deserved quiet time to curl up with a book after a busy day.

No matter your reason to stay inside, Health Canada recommends taking a few simple steps to make sure that your home is a healthy one and that it stays that way.

1.) Remove your shoes or boots at the entryway. It all begins at the

front door. It’s not just about the mud and dirt you could be tracking in – removing your footwear can also help keep harmful bacteria and chemicals from being spread around your home.

2.) Ventilate your home.

Open your windows on a nice day. After all, there’s nothing like a breath of fresh air. You can keep your indoor air cleaner by turning on the stove hood fan while you’re cooking or the bathroom fan while you’re in the shower. Also, make sure you have working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms helping you keep your home safe and healthy.

3.) Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. This simple activity is the most effective thing you can do to protect yourself against a number of infections and illnesses.

4.) Read the label. Even if you’re only topping up the windshield washer fluid in your car, make sure you read and follow label directions, paying close attention to hazard symbols. All household chemical products need to be used, stored and disposed of properly.

Keep products with hazard symbols out of sight and out of reach of children.

Kinky Boots is sold as a Broadway musical (and it was performed there) but the first performances were actually held in Chicago. The producers took advantage of an Illinois state program for out of town tryouts for Broadway musicals.

Rather it struggled (much like its storyline).

We were given tickets to the musical Kinky Boots as a Christmas gift.

It was a long wait from December to March but with lots of activities to fill in our time the days went by fast.

Just say the name -Kinky Boots. It just rolls off your tongue. Kinky Boots.

The musical is based on a British film and true story. Real life Steve Pateman was struggling to save his family’s shoe factory. The only choice was to branch out and come up with a new product. That product was fetish footwear for men. He called the new brand Divine Footwear.

Steve became Charlie Price in the musical but the story line remains the same. The struggling shoe factory. The niche market. But, Charlie teams up with a drag queen by the name of Lola and the two weather some ups and downs but

Folks won’t believe this one! Especially our grandchildren (who are getting used to the lies of their old Grandfather!)

snow fell in late December. The Depression was over and for the good years farmers had in the 40’s, nearly everyone had a new car ... and wanted to use it!

The ten inches was not much and the tracks left by them filled in with the drifting snow!

Snowblowers were not a popular then but the “V” snowploughs cleared the roads off. The 20-inch piles on each side blew full. And the roads were 20-inches deep! So more V-plows went through it again, only this time they left a four-foot deep bank on each side which blew in again, leaving the road with four feet of snow.

This kept on until the road was over seven feet deep and in many places was impassable (some word, eh!)

At one corner the road trench was over ten feet deep. For over a month it could not be used! Then came the spring thaw leaving a small river where the road should be!

It was unusable! One of our neighbours hitched a four-horse team and went to Kinley thru the fields! We delivered “hatching” eggs by a

small hand-sleigh for one and a half miles four times. Hatching eggs paid 80¢ per dozen!

Phyllis and Y.T. (Yours Truly) had just moved but she spent much of the time with Beth and with her sister, south of Kinley!

Y.T. did a lot of snowshoeing that winter, some times right over the fences!

But spring did come!

And with it came the huge run-off of that windy/snowy winter!

The caragana hedges on our new farm (SE 27-34-11-13) had been buried beneath eight feet of snow all winter, and there was water everywhere! Y.T. climbed to the top of the shack one time and the farm site was entirely surrounded by water! The roads were impossible and we had to take a team of horses to get out!

Maybe this was the start of Y.T.’s not so good boat building, eh?

I suppose Y.T. could tell about the “rabbit hunt-

ers” who borrowed our car to face that muddy mess while hunting them, but I won’t!

We will never forget that winter of 19491950!

Russ and Ed Featherstone came over a couple of times and the “newlyweds” really enjoyed their company.

When Bob Mason spring finally came the ground near the hedges was so cold it wouldn’t grow anything!

But it all passed and Phyllis and Y.T. lived happily ever after!

What an experience for a young couple, eh?

I suppose a fellow could drum up a few more stories about that terrible winter but “tomorrow and tomorrow”, eh?

Of course many books have recorded the manmade catastrophes of 20 years earlier (1929-1939) but we had better close down and let the “smart” phones tell about that!

We old timers are apt

Actually Y.T. remembers only one thing that impressed him that winter! Our dog died! I can only recall the almost human look in his eyes as he passed away.

He was only a dog! But his heart was here.

And how I reach out my arm, To pat his head when I feel him near.

On the loneliest spots in the farm!

The above memory is just that ... a memory!

But Y.T. enjoyed that winter far more than the few years that came before it! The sentiment is meant, I think, to show that times haven’t changed that much. Was it Plato who said: “Nothing can be done now, that hasn’t been done before!” Mebbe he was right! At least from our simple side. I dunno, but mebbe, eh?

The scientific world has surely changed but the ambition in most of our lives is in “living” them.

The best part of our lives is in memories of times, not of killing!

The tough winter and overcoming its challenge mean more to we older types then winning our wars!

Believe me! Our best times are still ahead!

Will diversification work amidst Chinese bluster?

There was a realization within the last 25 years, that the tried and true focus on growing high quality wheat for export, while at times profitable, was also volatile in the sense of being tied to a single commodity where the ups and downs of supply and demand economics were further muddied by government policies around the world.

The suggested answer to such variable markets was to promote farms that grew a more varied crop mix or added livestock to the mix.

Producers took the idea of diversification to heart, and all manner of crop and critter began to spring up on Prairie farms.

And here we are headed to planting season 2019 with huge question marks surrounding the market for canola which are not related to supply and demand, but are instead related to the posturing of government, in this case from China.

The reasons are different, the players different, but the result is the same. A farm sector largely reliant on a single crop are certainly at risk when the market for the crop is put under pressure, and that holds today for canola just as it did for wheat when trade subsidies were buffering Canadian sales.

It is unlikely farmers will push to diversify as they did in the past, but one does wonder if more effort had been made in terms of market creation if we might be less threatened by the Chinese posturing if farming was just a bit more diversified today?

St. Gabriel’s and Our Lady of Fatima Roman Catholic Churches Easter Reflection

by Father Edward Gibney The message of Easter, the message of peace, love and mercy, expressed to us in the sacrifice of

Jesus on the Cross, and his eternal life giving Resurrection, is the principle and central moment of the Christian year.

But it also serves as the differentiation between our fasting and penitential season of Lent and the great celebration of Easter.

But the celebration of Easter is more then a single day of celebration held on Easter Sunday.

The Easter or Paschal

Season is 50 days in which we celebrate the great gift of salvation that God has given humanity. The scripture we hear, over this time, depicts the many interactions Jesus had with his disciples between the time of his from the tomb and his Ascension into heaven, and it describes the great joy that the disciples felt in being in the presence of God. And all of this leads to the descent of the Holy Spirit, at Pentecost (on the disciples but for

all humanity), ensuring that God would always be with us.

These 50 days that follow Easter Sunday are days of joy and contentment which is more than simple happiness and pleasure.

This kind of joy is like a strong current that runs deep beneath the stormy surface of our daily experiences.

This joy is the celebration of walking with God as he did with the two men on the road to Emmaus.

It is a sense of security that can

only come from being held in the arms of our loving God. It is peace, knowing that God accepts you for who you are and that he wants you to be a part of his family and to be eternally with him in heaven.

May God grant you a Blessed Easter and a most joyous celebration of the Easter Season.

What does it mean to think of others ahead of ourselves?

by Reverend Doug Motz, Biggar Associated Gospel To begin – I’d like to share this story: The help you do for others shall always get back to you.

A man was driving his car when he saw an older lady, stranded on the side of the road. He saw that she needed help.

So he stopped his Pontiac near her Mercedes and got out.

He smiled while he was approaching her.

Still she was worried, as nobody had stopped for hours. Moreover, he did not look safe, as his appearance was so poor and shabby. He could see how frightened she was, so he tried to calm her: “I‘m here to help you,

don‘t worry. My name is Bryan Anderson.”

The tire was flat, so he had to crawl under the car. While changing the tire, he got dirty and his hands were hurt.

When the job was done, she asked how much she owed him for his help.

Bryan smiled. He said: “If you really want to pay me back, the next time you see someone, who needs help, give that person the needed assistance. And think of me.”

That same evening, the lady stopped by a small cafe. That place looked dingy. Then she saw a waitress, nearly eight months pregnant, wiping her wet hair with a towel. The waitress had a sweet friendly smile, yet she had spent the whole day on

her feet.

The lady wondered, how someone who has so little can be so kind and giving to a stranger.

Then she remembered Bryan.

The lady had finished her meal and paid with a hundred-dollar bill.

The waitress went to get change and when she came back, the lady was gone. She left a note on the napkin: “You don‘t own me anything. Somebody once helped me, just like now I‘m helping you.

If you really want to pay me back, do not let this chain of love end with you.” The waitress found four more one-hundred (dollar) bills under the napkin.

That night the waitress came home earlier. She was thinking about the lady and the money she left. She was wondering how the lady could know how much she and her husband needed it?

Especially now, when the baby will soon arrive. She knew that her husband w o r r i e d a b o u t that, so she was glad to tell him good news. Then she kissed him and whis-

pered: “Now everything will be all right. I love you, Bryan Anderson.”

More times than not we in our Western culture tend to look out for Number One! But what did the Apostle Paul clarified for us here in this Philippians 2:1-11 passage? The best way to apply this passage is to consider the needs of those around us to be of higher value than our own – similar to Bryan Anderson.

This requires a humbling of ourselves – especially when we see others in need and experiencing greater hardships than our own!

Consider the example Jesus left for us to follow!

He’s the One who set the ultimate example for us all. In Matthew 20:27 and 28:27: “And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave” – “just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”

You see, Jesus had every right as the second Person of the Godhead – Trinity – as being equal with God (also see: John 1:1-14).

Yet He didn’t look at His status – His High Position as being equal with God the Father as His Son. You see, Jesus wasn’t concerned about being the most popular person around, but He willingly thought more of others

than Himself!

Even though He came to this earth as the incarnate Son of God, and Son of Man, He was willing to become like us. He humbled Himself and became an obedient Servant to do one important thing and that was to glorify God the Father by doing God’s will not His own!

He did this because as it states in John 3:16, God so loved the world that He gave Jesus – who willinly endured excruciating pain during His trial (See: Matthew 27:26 and 27; 1 Peter 2:18-25. Yet not once did He revile or retaliate His accusers.

Then they nailed Him to a Roman cross where He – shedding His Blood – died; was buried – rising from the dead the third Day – having finished the work God had planned for Him – with us in mind. He then returned back to God the Father to be seated at God’s right hand, with the Promise that He’ll return someday soon!

He did this to reconcile us back to a relationship with God again. So, by Grace through Faith we recognize that He did all this because our sins had separated us from the Holy God of heaven who created us, and now, because He paid the price for our sin through His shed blood and death and rose the third day, when we repent of our sins, and ask Him

to come live within our hearts at that point our sins are forgiven. This then enables us to follow Jesus’ example we read in Philippians 2:1-11!

Note how God the Father exalted Jesus (see Philippians 2:9-11)!

Remember, because of Jesus obedience, one day every tongue will confess and every knee will bow before Him and declare that He Alone is Lord!

This Easter Season, allow Him to be Lord of your life!

Light beats Darkness of a nomadic Semitic family when the prevailing trends were idolatrous rather than godly.

Though tested severely, it shone more brightly in a great personal “sacrifice.�

In spite of shadowy deception and scheming, its focus remained on a chosen family growing to be a special nation.

It seemed to be buried in the ashes of 400 years of cruel slavery, but was reignited through the torch of a great deliverer - covenant giver.

The flame flickered weakly, brightening briefly under devout leadership in the style of a sincere (though not without contamination) shepherd

- song writer - king.

In times of turmoil and confusion, great prophets blasted the darkness, but also kept raising the torch of hope, keeping the vision of the promise alive.

Centuries passed, hope dimmed, yet it never died out.

Then the glorious light of grace burst in - well, maybe “burst in� is too bright an expression.

Yet for those who looked for it, “the Light of the World� arrived.

The darkness mustered all its strength against the light. Herod tried to kill the baby ... 40 days of obscure testing came along ... religious author-

ities lined up to destroy the Bearer of the Torch ... even cruel execution was involved...

But even death could not snuff out the glowing coals of grace - the Love of God. With the power of resurrection the Light burst into flame, and has kept spreading through all the world for centuries since.

It’s alive today, in the brilliant hope that is carried along by our faith.

God has, in these last days, spoken to us by His Son - our Redeemer.

Hallelujah! Let Easter remind us again that the darkness cannot extinguish the Light in our hearts.

PALS Easter Reflection I enourage all of you (and myself) to be willing to be open and present to seeing God’s grace manifest in the many ways: in the laughter of young children, of seeing wild crocuses, and for good food.

by Reverend Sarah E. Mowat This Lenten season I have been encouraging people to be present to our God who is at work all around us.

The question I have been asking is “as you allow yourself to be present, where do you see God at work, where do you hear God at work, and where do you feel God at work, in our community?�

We have people who have sent in pictures, videos, people standing up to say thank you for gifts of flowers sent to them from a generous anonymous person. All works of the Holy Spirit who is working among us.

I have been thinking about this act of opening ourselves up to the consistent work of the Holy Spirit among us.

I have been once again reminded of the concept and gift of God’s grace.

At the time of this writing I have been focusing on the Gospel lesson in Luke chapter 15:1-3, 11b32. They are the parables about lost sheep and a lost coin, and the famous parable of the prodigal son.

These parables remind us

of God’s extravagant love for us. The prodigal son tells us of God’s total love (without an agenda), and absolute forgiveness. We are told that as a parent has unconditional love for a child, God has even more unconditional love for you and for me.

This Lenten season I have once again been reminded of how little I (we) deserve the grace and love of God. Yet, every Sunday I am told of my baptism at the Lord’s table, and this week the biblical narrative of the prodigal son, and in the photos and videos, and warming spring days, I am reminded of this God who loves us. This God who came down to earth and slipped into a human form, walked, ate, slept, healed, gave forgiveness, hung out with those who are oppressed.

This is the God that has reached out to every single one of us.

This Easter, with all of this, I am aware of and continue to be deeply thankful for the working of the Holy Spirit, the grace of God that is all around us.

For me, this Easter season, I will be reflecting on the amazing grace and gift of Jesus. I will think not only of his life and his death but also the resurrection.

A dismal choice was made. Darkness took over - yet a glimmer of light came in, in the form of a wonderful promise. That light was never snuffed out.

It shone through in spite of the darkness that brought about the destruction by water of all people except a small family preserved in a floating zoo.

OBITUARIES On Friday, March 29, 2019, Ray Ostrom of Biggar, SK, husband, dad, grandpa and brother passed away at the age 72, after a brief battle with cancer.

Ray was born on April 28, 1946 in Meadow Lake, SK. to Bernie and Annette (Gagnon) Ostrom. The family moved to B.C. shortly after Ray was born. Ray attended school at Montrose, Trail and Fruitvale, B.C. When Ray was a teenager, he spent two summers working in Saskatchewan before making his permanent home there. Ray raced pony chuckwagons and chariots from 1966-2007, across Saskatchewan and Alberta. During these years many life-long friendships were made.

On March 13, 1971 he married Lorraine Chastney. They raised 2 daughters: Roxanne, Raelene; and numerous chuckwagon ponies at their acreage near Biggar, SK. Ray’s enthusiasm for the sport of chuckwagon and chariot racing became his life-long passion where he combined his welding and woodworking mastery into building racing wagons and chariots.

He was known for his quick wit, quirky sense of humour and his pursuit for perfection. Ray’s talents became known for building fast wagons that aided many drivers to set track records in the World Professional Chuckwagon Association, Canadian Professional Chuckwagon Association and Western Chuckwagon Association. He was a master of his art.

Ray will be sadly missed by his wife of 48 years, Lorraine, daughters: Roxanne (Allen) Dunham (Quintin, Cassady, Courtney) and Raelene (George) Mercer (Phoenix, Raiden). Brother Bob (Marilyn) Ostrom. Sisters: Jannette Gilstrap, Bernice Ellis, Margo (Lyle) Sattler, Connie (John) McBee. Sisters-in-law: Maxine (Dale) Lehmann; Deloris (John) Hawkins and numerous nieces and nephews.

Predeceased by: his parents Bernie and Annette (Gagnon) Ostrom. Father and mother-in-law Ernie and Maureen (Keefer) Chastney and brother-in-law Mike Gilstrap Sr. As per Ray’s wishes, a celebration of life will be held on Saturday May 11, 2019 at Ray and Lorraine’s acreage at 2 pm.
