New Creation Community Players wound up a wildly popular production of Mamma Mia! this past weekend, selling out all four performances. A lot of hard work, the cast and crew can certainly be proud of their efforts.

Manitoba storyteller coming to St. Gabriel School National and international teller of tales, Leigh-Anne Kehler will be bringing the art of the story to St. Gabriel School, Thursday, April 11.

Appearing at renowned festivals including the Toronto INternational Storytelling Festival, Yukon International Storytelling Festival, Winnipeg International Peace Storytelling Festival, Winnipeg Folk Festival and Children’s Festival, Kehler has toured schools in Japan, Thailand, Norway and Denmark.

Kehler comes to Biggar, courtesy of the Biggar and District Arts Council and the Organization

of Saskatchewan Arts Councils (OSAC).

Theatre’s across the country have commissioned and produced her plays.

With financial assistance from the Canada Council for the Arts, she developed and toured her play, “The Final Hour”, the story of her father’s unique palliative experience.

Kehler offers unique performances, specially catered for individual schools based on her travels to may parts of the globe. She will be bringing her presentation to St. Gabriel Kindergarten to Grade 5 and a second show to the Grade 6-9.

by Waikato Times of New Zealand, and Anne Janelle, classical cellist, had nothing in common other that four strings and a favourite chocolate bar.

It was more than enough.

Today, they’re an award-winning, “utterly world-class” singer-song-

writer-ukulele-cello duo.

It’s true: opposites attract. James grew up playing folk, jazz and blues on his ukulele while Anne was exclusively a classical cellist.

But the pair’s differences quickly became their biggest asset. The uke is high, the cello is low; the uke plays short notes, the cello long bow strokes; the uke is all about strumming while the cello radiates melody. Like shadows and light in an old photograph, these contrasts are complementary.

“We’re like a pair of dancers who can’t step on each other’s feet,”

jokes James.

Naturally the next step was to release a duo album and, so, “True Love Don’t Weep” was born. The album garnered a Canadian Folk Music Award for Best Traditional Album of the Year in 2009. A mixture of traditional tunes with fresh vitality” and, for the first time, original songs, True Love Don’t Weep showcased the duo’s ability to capture the soul of a song. By this time, Anne had completed her degree and the pair were performing regularly, bringing their instinctive musical interaction and contagious

enthusiasm to audiences across five continents.

Since True Love Don’t Weep, James and Anne have each released two solo albums each (James’ Man with a Love Song and The Old Silo; Anne’s Beauty Remains and So Long at the Fair) and toured in over 15 countries, making their mark not only as accomplished instrumentalists but also as some of the finest songwriters of their generation.

“We walked our separate musical paths for a while, but I think we both came to realize, each in our own way, that the duo is our strongest musical offering.

Canadians want to see public notices in newspapers New research from News Media Canada confirms that Canadisn want to see Public Notices continue to be published in newspapers. When asked, more than half (53 per cent) of adults indicated they were somewhat or strongly opposed to the cessation of publishing Public Notices in newspapers.

More than eight in ten of those opposed also indicated that they would take some kind of action if their town/ city council or provincial government wanted to stop publishing Public Notices in newspapers. The majority of adults said they would re-consider their vote for elected officials (62 per cent), followed by contacting their elected official to voice their concerns (43 per cent) 0r posting to social media (27 per cent). Considerable differences can be seen in the various regions across Canada (see chart).

Some provincial governments and town/city councils would like to end the practice that requires public notices to be published in newspapers.

Instead they want the public to rely ONLY on their websites and electronic social media or emails to inform residents about things like zoning bylaws, public hearings, council meetings, budget issues including council remunerations and changes to fees/taxes, elections, road closures, camping permits, change in services like garbage collection, snow plowing, hospital closures, flu clinics, vaccinations, internet service, regulations, pension plan information, health information, etc.

Government has a duty to inform Canadians about its programs, services, policies and decision. The purpose of public notice is to display information in places where the public is likely to come into notice. Traditionally and effectively, newspapers have published public notices because newspapers spark curiosity and are delivered to interested public. Nine out of ten Canadians continue to read newspapers each week, in printed and digital formats, and newspapers continue to maintain a record of history for our communities.

They MUST be signed, approximately 300 words in length and are subject to editing.

Chroncling your family history is important “I’m going to write a book about the family,�

I said to one of my cousins at a family funeral.

I was referring to my father’s side of the family.

I had already finished a similar project concerning my mother’s side as a personal gift for Canada’s 150. I divided it into four small books -- memoirs from my Aunt; a family cookbook; history of the family; and a photo album.

At the beginning of 2017 I had thought i could complete both sides; I soon realized that goal would never be reached.

Here it is 2019 and I still haven’t completed the paternal side!!

I spent a number of hours reading blogs and articles on the art

of publishing a family history. Some of the advice was good but some of it was just so vague.

Books were recommended: Ten Steps to Writing and Publishing Your Family History; Guide to Genealogical Writing. Let me tell you there are more than 10 steps to writing anything.

Decide where to start and end the story. Edit.

Proof read. All great advice but easier said

than done.

I decided I would end with my first cousins.

Anything beyond that and individual families could fill in their own blanks with their information.

That decision has not altered since I Peggy Hasein started this process. The difficulties arise when chronicling the ancestors.

Having dabbled in genealogy for a number of years the goal of the

book was to find a way to organize and set in writing all the little bits of paper I have accumulated over the years.

I also wanted to showcase my father and his siblings as they are first generation of Canadians.

Obviously I have a few photos of my grandparents and their information I really thought I could just expand a little and it should be no problem churning out a book.

I was able to work with a researcher at Pier 21 and found the passenger lists of the ships both sets of grandparents immigrated on. These guys are a wealth of information; they can tell you the ages, where the final destination was, even how much

money was in their possession. Of course, the manifest had to be included in the book along with all the information.

I sailed along, wrote some background stories, interviewed one of my aunts, collected pictures and thought the book was well underway. Then, I came to showcasing my dad and found it was harder than I thought to write his life’s story. It was equally hard when it came to the aunts and uncles. I worked with one of my cousins and unearthed some letters her father

had written.

Should these be included? Maybe in a section called documents. Then I found my grandfather’s will. Then some birth and death certificates. Then when doing some research I found the ship’s manifest that showed my second great grandfather coming to America (Ellis Island) and his journey to Canada.

You see, now I have had to revise my outline two or three times and this is why it is two years later and the book still isn’t finished.

The winter of 2018-19 was colder than normal, and the month of February was 40 per cent colder than the 30-year average.

While the Saskatchewan Rate Review Panel was in the process of reviewing SaskEnergy’s rate application, the government approved an interim

SaskEnergy Commodity Rate of $2.95/GJ, effective from November 1, 2018 to March 31, 2019, saving customers about $50 over the past few winter months.

SaskEnergy’s new Commodity Rate is the lowest since 1999. The adjustment to the Delivery Service Rate will provide additional funding for safety and system integrity programs, as well as infrastructure investments for projects such as the relocation of major pipeline infrastructure outside large urban centres.

The Government of Saskatchewan has approved changes recommended by the Saskatchewan Rate Review Panel to SaskEnergy’s Commodity and Delivery Service Rates.

Just cut another tree boy!

Some of our ancestors came from Scotland where legend tells me they used to wash their paper and use it over again! And often they just got by (well Sir Walter Scot sure did, eh?).

But times have changed. They have even changed a little since Y.T. picked up his pen.

What a mess sometimes I leave on my (ahem) desk in my Biggar Health Centre room!

Things weren’t too bad when I had good eyesight, but now, with

glaucoma, I often leave half a page, and when interrupted, forget what my last words were!

It’s not odd to pick up one of the many pages that sez, “The badgers started to dig out the gophers, leaving holes that a horse could step ___” Oh, oh! Does that page go with “So we caught the next train out,” or “and we could talk to each other again”, or does that piece go with the one that sez “No sooner did we put the boat in ___ then we got a lot of machine gun

Savings Plan (RRSP) is a type of savings plan that is registered with the Canadian government and allows you to make tax-deductible contributions to save towards your retirement. The income you earn in your RRSP is tax exempt, as long as it remains in the plan. Tax is generally payable when you take money out of your RRSP. It’s never too late to make the most of your RRSP options: Unused contributions carry forward. You can contribute the lower of 18% of your income from the previous year or the annual RRSP limit for the current year, which is $26,500 for 2019.

Contributions to a workplace pension plan will reduce the amount you can contribute. In some cases, it may be beneficial for your spouse or common-law partner to make contributions to your RRSP using their available RRSP contribution room.

Save smaller amounts all year. It may be easier for you to set up an account that makes regular automatic contributions to your RRSP throughout the year, rather than try to contribute a larger lump sum of money by the annual deadline.

Explore programs for special RRSP withdrawals. Funds in your RRSP can be used to help Canadians invest

in other ways, including in themselves. One program is the Home Buyers’ Plan, which allows first-time homebuyers to temporarily withdraw up to $25,000 from their RRSP to help build or buy a home. The Lifelong Learning Plan allows you to withdraw amounts to finance full-time training or education for yourself, your spouse or commonlaw partner.

Funds withdrawn through these programs must gradually be returned to your RRSP over time to avoid tax consequences.

At any time of year, an advisor can work with you to determine which registered accounts and investment options might be suitable for you.

Biggar Lodge News Hi! I would like to introduce myself. I am Janice Archdekin.

I have been working in Long Term Care for 30 years. I am now the Activity Director. This was a big step for me.

I am loving my job and have started January 29.

February has been a very cold month. In fact, the coldest in 70 years.

Our birthday party was extremely cold with wind chills of minus-45. I have to thank all that came out to it. Bill Haffermehl played our music and the Landis CWL provided the wonderful cakes for our lunch.

We have been exercising to stay warm and making Valentine’s Day cards to give to our loved

ones, and we have had a tea. The residents really enjoyed it. February 14 we had a Resident meeting.

It was very well attended.

We discussed the change in hours of staffing; the new canteen cards and the new programs that we hope to have in place in the near future. We will be turning one of our rooms into a room designed for the residents that need quiet time. The breakfast club will be now known as the dinner club. We hope to make different meals options available, as well.

We are looking into getting a motorized bike from Telemiracle called a Trishaw. This bike would be able to take our residents out for outings. We

will have to do some fund raising for this. We have some ideas: a community bingo or another sign night, a cookbook with all the residents’ and families’ favourite recipes.

We had our monthly Birthday Party on March 6. Eastern Star provided lunch. We had a St Patrick’s Day party on the 15th, and on the 21st, the Perdue UCW hosted our Thursday Bingo. The Grade 5 students came to read and visit with our residents.

We are always looking for more volunteers so if you could spare an hour here or there we sure hope you can come and help. The residents would really enjoy this.

The United States has worked diligently to keep the economy of Cuba stunted by banning American companies trading with the island nation, and let’s not forget the efforts the Canadian beef industry undertook as the U.S. looked to impose Country Of Origin Labelling

(COOL).

Putting barriers to trade in place impact sales, which in turn has commodity organizations and key company officials putting pressure on government to address the situation.

At the same time primary producers and frontline workers feel the pressure as well.

The situation with China at present as stated is not unique, but that does not make it any less acceptable.

Unfortunately, how to address such disputes in an expedient fashion which would normalize trade is not easily achieved. Such situations have a tendency to worsen as governments dig in to present a public image of strength against what is essentially extortion by another country.

How this situation plays out will be something Canadian farmers will be watching closely as seeding draws ever closer for 2019.

Take precautions against hantavirus The Ministry of Health is reminding Saskatchewan residents to take precautions against hantavirus as the weather warms up.

People are most often exposed when cleaning up enclosed buildings (such as grain bins, sheds, barns, garages, trailers, cottages and homes) or farm equipment and vehicles after winter.

“You can get hantavirus by breathing in contaminated airborne particles from the droppings, urine and saliva of infected deer mice,” Saskatchewan’s Deputy Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Denise Werker said. “Hantavirus can cause a rare, but potentially fatal lung illness known as hantavirus pulmonary syndrome.”

Symptoms usually start within one to six weeks of exposure and include fever, muscle aches, cough, headaches, nausea and vomiting. Some people develop severe symptoms that can be life threatening. Seek medi-

cal attention immediately if you have a cough, fever and shortness of breath.

To avoid exposure to hantavirus, be aware of mouse droppings and nesting materials and take the following precautions when cleaning infested areas: • Ventilate the building by opening doors and windows for at least 30 minutes before cleaning; • Use wet mopping methods and wear rubber or plastic gloves; • Wear goggles and a well-fitting N-95 type filter mask when cleaning areas contaminated by droppings in a confined space; • Dampen areas contaminated with rodent droppings with bleach disinfectant and remove droppings with a damp mop or cloth; • Avoid using dry cleaning methods such as dusting, sweeping, vacuuming or air-hosing; • Steam clean, shampoo or spray upholstered furniture with a detergent,

disinfectant or a mixture of bleach and water; and • Wash clothes and bedding with detergent in hot water.

Also, take steps to reduce rodent infestations: • Block openings that might allow rodents to enter a building; • Store human and animal food, water and garbage in containers with tightly-fitted lids; and • Move woodpiles or other potential hiding places for mice away from your home.

The risk of contracting hantavirus infection is currently low in Saskatchewan.

However, deer mice are present throughout the province and the risk will increase as the weather continues to warm up and people resume seasonal activities.

As of December 31, 2018, there have been 32 people with hantavirus pulmonary syndrome reported in Saskatchewan since 1994; 10 of those cases were fatal.

Spieth struggling to find his form Where have you gone, Jordan Spieth?

The golf world turns its lonely eyes to you.

Okay, apologizes to Simon and Garfunkel, but what has happened to Spieth? In 2014-17, the young Texan was the obvious slam-dunk successor to Tiger Woods as the most dominant golfer in the world. Now, he’s a guy who can barely make a 36-hole cut.

Spieth will tee it up at the Masters this week, because he won the season’s first major in 2015 and gets a lifetime invitation to the annual tournament as a result.

His track record at Augusta is outstanding (T2, 1, T2, 11th, three in the last five years).

After his 2015 Masters title, Spieth cemented his status as the best young player in the game by winning the U.S.Open two months later. He won the Tour Championship that year, won two tournaments in 2016 and three more, including the British Open, in 2017. He stood well above the crowd of young talent seeking to fill the Woods void on Tour — ahead of the likes of Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas, Jason Day, Justin Rose, Rickie Fowler and Brooks Koepka.

But since then? Deterioration.

After winning that Open Championship win in July, 2017, Spieth has gone dry. His putting is erratic, his driving is sloppy. He’s thinking too much, say some observers — “paralysis by analysis.”

He went winless in 2018, with thirds at Houston and the Masters his best finishes. He has five missed cuts in his last 17 starts, with only one top-10 finish.

His world ranking, once a luminous No. 1, is now a so-so 30th.

He’s still a 14-1 Vegas pick to win this year’s Masters (behind only Dustin Johnson, McIlroy, and Woods) but his recent play makes him a lousy selection, even though his track record at Augusta National, as noted above, is terrific.

Do you own a boat? Learn new obligations starting summer 2019 (NC) If you own a commercial vessel or a fishing or recreational boat, there are certain rules to follow, such as obtaining your boating licence or registering your vessel.

This season, you also need to be aware of new prohibitions and responsibilities.

In the summer of 2019, the Wrecked, Abandoned or Hazardous Vessels Act comes into force, under the Government of Canada’s Oceans Protection Plan. It’s designed to address the growing problem of wrecked, abandoned or hazardous boats that are posing hazards to our waters and creating safety risks for people and the environment. It’s currently estimated hundreds of these vessels exist in Canadian

waters, ranging from small pleasure craft to large commercial ships.

The Act prohibits boat abandonment and irresponsible boat management, strengthening owner accountability and liability for the end-oflife management of their watercraft. Under the new rules, you could be fined for abandoning your boat; leaving it adrift for over 48 hours; or causing it to become a wreck by sinking, stranding or grounding it.

You’re also prohibited from leaving your boat in poor condition or in a dilapidated state in the same area for more than 60 days without

prior authorization. You are also prohibited from leaving your dilapidated boat on federal crown property, such as a small craft harbour, without permission.

Remember that as an owner, you are responsible for using your boat safely, keeping it in good

working order and properly disposing of it when it reaches the end of its life.

You are also responsible for any hazard-related costs, including clean-up and repairs.

If you find a wrecked, abandoned or hazardous boat, report it to the Canadian Coast Guard.

I would like to thank those who came out and who took the time to talk to me about their concerns.

In this MP Report, I will address two issues about which many constituents wished to know more.

SNC-Lavalin scandal Despite repeated attempts from both the Conservatives and the NDP to get to the bottom of the SNC-Lavalin scandal, the Liberals have continued to block any attempts at a proper investigation.

For the second time in as many weeks, the Liberals used their majority to shut down a Parliamentary investigation – first at the Justice Committee, and now at the Ethics Committee.

Despite several days of Liberals publicly urging both Jody Wilson-Raybould and Jane Philpott to speak up – to “put up or shut up”, as one Liberal MP put it – Liberal members of these committees voted to prevent them both from being heard.

It is true that the situation is difficult, but Prime Minister Trudeau has done us no favours by continually bungling our relationship with our second-biggest trading partner. Trudeau has mused about sending a trade delegation to work out the problem, but we need action, not public musings.

Billions of dollars and thousands of jobs are threatened so long as this dispute continues.

As we enter seeding time, Canada’s farmers need answers.

So far, we have had none.

That’s why the Conser-

vative Members of the Agriculture Committee demanded an emergency meeting for March 28 to get answers from the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, the Minister of International Trade Diversification and the Minister of Foreign Affairs. We need to know what is being done about this serious issue, and how the government plans on fixing their mess.

Despite the seriousness of this situation, the Liberal members of the Agriculture committee voted against calling the Ministers to testify.

Instead of giving answers to Canadian farmers, the Liberals are playing political games.

Conservatives are not done pushing for answers for our farmers.

Provincial Sales Tax will not be applied to federal carbon tax The Government of Saskatchewan is ensuring Provincial Sales Tax (PST) is not charged on top of the federal governmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s carbon tax on SaskPower and SaskEnergy utility bills.

The federal government intends to charge the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on top of the carbon tax, in effect a tax on a tax. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Even as our government is fighting this harmful

tax in court, the federal government is imposing their carbon tax on Saskatchewan families, communities, and businesses,â&#x20AC;? Premier Scott Moe said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;While the federal government is making you pay GST on top of this tax starting today, our government has ensured that you will not be paying PST on the federal carbon tax.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is another example of the

federal government making it more difficult for Saskatchewan businesses to be competitive,â&#x20AC;?

Finance Minister Donna Harpauer said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our government has been clear in its court challenge that we believe the imposition of the federal carbon tax is a violation of the Constitution and has no place in Saskatchewan.â&#x20AC;?

Saskatchewan has amended regulations to

ensure PST will not be applied to the carbon tax on SaskPower utility bills. PST is not applied to natural gas, and SaskEnergy customers will not pay PST on top of the federal carbon tax. However, federal GST will be applied on the federal carbon tax on home ownersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; utility bills.

In February, the Government of Saskatchewan presented its position to the

court of appeal that the imposition of a carbon tax is unconstitutional, and is waiting for the court to rule. In the meantime, the federal carbon tax will be imposed April 1, 2019, as part of the federal governmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s backstop provisions.

The Government of Saskatchewan will continue to fight the federal carbon tax in court, while continuing to act on our made-in Saskatchewan Prairie Resilience climate change strategy, an effective plan to help our province address climate change.

Butter is just better When it comes to cooking, baking, and mealtime, butter has a definite role in the kitchen and at the dinner table.

I know that even mentioning the comparison of butter to margarine is going to stir up a lot of opinions, but I am going to express my view anyway.

We use butter in our home on a daily basis for cooking, baking and serving and I cannot even remember the last time margarine made its way into my refrigerator.

In my opinion nothing is better for flavour, richness, melt ability, texture, and in moderation, health benefits.

Butter is one of the oldest and most natural products there is, yet it has taken quite a beating by margarines.

Many people buy margarine due to budgetary restrictions, but I would assume that there are just as many, if not more, that purchase it because of perceived health benefits. Not all margarines are created equal and it is important to read the labels of any product that is manufactured and/ or processed, including butter.

If one is purchasing margarine, one of the main things to look out for in an ingredient list is “hydrogenated” or “modified” oil. Hydrogenation is the process used to transform liquid oil into a solid fat at room temperature. Vegetable shortening, many peanut butters and various margarines are made in this manner and this process creates artificially produced trans fats which are now considered the

worst type of fat for the heart. Butter is not processed using hydrogenation. As a matter of fact, butter is hardly processed at all. What butter does have is a very small amount of naturally occurring trans fat, also present in the meat of animals such as beef and lamb.

A 1994 Harvard University study, as well as research from other credible sources, have concluded that a diet high in Trans Fat doubles the chance for heart attack and decreases life expectancy. While trans fats can occur naturally, they are most commonly associated with chemical preservative techniques like hydrogenation and health experts recommend that you limit your intake of hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated foodstuffs as much as possible.

It is also important to point out that a twoteaspoon serving of butter usually has no more calories or fat than margarine or olive oil.

So are but-

ter, margarine, and vegetable oils bad for you?

First of all, let’s point out that the term “bad” is not very definitive. It depends on what you are looking for and it is imperative to keep in mind that there are pros and cons for everything.

Let’s face it; no matter what type of fat Chef Dez you are ingesting on a regular basis, moderation is the key, as with almost everything. For instance, many doctors may tell you that red wine is good for you, but always in moderation: One glass per day may be fine but skipping the whole week and having seven glasses on Friday night, not so much.

Dear Chef Dez: Some recipes call for unsalted butter and also call for salt. Can you please explain why?

Vivian D. Surrey, B.C. Dear Vivian: Usually one will often see this by pastry chefs wanting to control the amount of salt in their pastry, which is usually less than the percentage found in the butter.

Unless making very precise recipes, there is no need to use unsalted butter and I have always used salted butter for everything. It is less expensive than unsalted butter and isn’t butter expensive enough already?
