Blazer Badminton Roundup

Senior Badminton This past Saturday March 23 saw the Senior Badminton team travel to Unity for a tournament.

The team represented our school very well with Henrick Ladadan winning Bronze with Hanna Tuico, and Michayla Ferrel winning gold.

The next action for the green and gold is this Friday when they travel to Wilkie and this Saturday when they travel to North Battleford.

Junior Badminton On Friday, March 22, the Junior Badminton team played a tournament in Unity.

All of the students played very well in their first tournament of the season. Abe Genis took bronze in singles boys play, while Johndrey Tuico and Valentina Sanchez won bronze in the mixed doubles category.

On Saturday, BCS 2000 hosted their home junior badminton tournament.

Johndrey Tuico and Valentina Sanchez won gold in mixed doubles play. Abe Genis came in second in boys singles. Kennedy Sopczak came in second in girls singles. Lane Vos and Hayden McMahon placed third in boys doubles. Emma Genis and Chantel Hinse won their last game to come in fifth in girls doubles. Seamus Walker and Blane Vallee pushed their final match to three games to come in sixth in boys doubles.

All players showed a great deal of sportsmanship and help putting together the tournament.

Thanks to Ms. Chupik for organizing the canteen for the tournament.

Shots fired at RCMP during routine traffic stop near Battleford Battlefords RCMP responded to a complaint of an erratic driver on Highway 4 south of Battleford, March 21.

While the officers were responding they were advised the driver of the vehicle was wanted on a Canada Wide Warrant for parole violations.

Upon locating the suspect vehicle, at 7:15 p.m., RCMP officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop in relation to the driving offences but the vehicle fled. The RCMP officers were, however, able to confirm the driver of the vehicle was the subject of the Canada Wide Warrant.

A pursuit took place on grid roads and continued onto Highway 4 heading north towards Battleford. RCMP officers were able to successfully deploy a spike belt and the suspect vehicle stopped. The driver who was confirmed to be the wanted suspect - then discharged a firearm at an RCMP officer.

The RCMP officer returned fire at the suspect. It was at this time RCMP officers observed there were other persons in the vehicle with the suspect. The vehicle fled the scene and RCMP officers pursued the vehicle and stopped the vehicle a second time.

The occupants then fled the vehicle along with the suspect who had the firearm.

A containment area to ensure public safety - was set up in an area bordering the south side of the Battle River.

Battlefords RCMP also requested assistance from specialized RCMP units to assist with the

search for the suspect, including Saskatoon Police Service Air 1.

The suspect and vehicle occupants managed to get a ride from an unsuspecting member of the public. This resulted in a further search and a traffic stop on Highway 29 just south of Battleford where the suspect was taken into custody without incident.

No one was injured as a result of this incident.

Randall Nicotine, 33 years of age, from Edmonton, was charged with the following: • Fight from peace office; • Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose; • Using imitation firearm in commission of offence; • Forcible confinement; • Child endangerment; • Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle; • Assault; • Assault a police officer with weapon; • Driving while prohibited; • Resist arrest.

Nicotine made his first court appearance on March 25 and 26 in North Battleford.

The Saskatchewan RCMP has requested that the Moose Jaw Police Service conduct an independent, external investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident which included the discharge of an RCMP firearm.

The request was made in the interest of transparency and public confidence.

Additionally, the Saskatchewan RCMP has requested the Ministry of Justice appoint an independent observer.

Sagon recognized for saving the life of a woman in U.S.

Biggar’s Steven Sagon was in the right place at the right time for a 68-year-old woman.

Sagon was at a restaurant in Lake Hasvasu City, Arizona, February 2, when a car careened through a cement barrier, plunging into a watery marsh, landing upside down. Sagon was quick to react, going to the woman’s aid, freeing her from her seatbelt, pulling her to safety and staying with her until medical help arrived.

Budget delivers the right balance for Saskatchewan The 2019-20 Budget is balanced, with a projected surplus of $34.4 million.

Higher surpluses of $49 million, $72 million, and $84 million are projected for the three fiscal years that follow.

The government’s operational debt will not increase in 2019-20. Revenue is forecast at $15.03 billion, up about $782 million. Expense of $14.99 billion is projected, up from the previous year’s budget by $382 million, or 2.6 per cent.

Total investment in health in 2019-20 is projected to be $5.89 billion, an increase of $123 million, or 2.1 per cent, compared to last year’s budget. The budget increases operating fund-

ing to the Saskatchewan Health Authority to $3.6 billion, up more than $113 million.

Specific health care capital investments in this budget include funding the preconstruction design of a new Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert.

The 2019-20 Budget also invests in planning for a new hospital in Weyburn.

Saskatchewan’s school divisions will receive $1.9 billion in operating funding for the 2019-20 school year.

Funding for the Ministry of Advanced Education exceeds $727 million in the 2019-20 Budget. More than $672 million of that amount will go toward operating and capital grants for Saskatchewan’s post-secondary institutions - including nearly $88 million in funding for the College of Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan.

To improve safety at highway intersections, the 2019-20 Budget provides $13 million as the first step of a five-year, $65 million Enhanced Intersection Safety Program that will improve signage, sight lines and lighting and add safety features like rumble strips at intersections throughout the province.

The budget also includes more than $60 million for twinning and passing lane projects. Overall, the budget provides funding to improve about 1,000 kilometres of the highway network in 2019-20.

The 2019-20 Budget includes more than $15 million to continue funding 128 municipal police positions and targeted policing initiatives across the province. A $1.1 million increase has been designated for drug-impaired driving detection training for police.

The 2019-20 Budget provides more than $251 million in municipal revenue sharing, a $10.5 million increase compared to

last year.

The 2019-20 Budget contains new, nonrefundable tax credits for volunteer firefighters and volunteer medical first responders who serve to protect and help Saskatchewan people when they need it most.

The budget includes measures that will ensure the people of Saskatchewan receive a fair and balanced return for their potash.

This is an opportunity: Is council up for the challenge Headline: Fortune Minerals looking elsewhere in Saskatchewan to build refinery Fortune Minerals is a Canadian mining company. It’s plan was to build a refinery to process its metal concentrates from its mine in Northwest Territories. As an example cobalt compounds needed to make the cathodes of lithium ion batteries would be produced.

According to Fortune Minerals the refinery would have employed 80 to 90 full time workers with an estimated half a billion dollars in total spending over the mine’s life.

Not to mention the labour force and dollars needed to build the mine in the first place.

As for those environmentalists the provincial government cleared the way by giving the project environmental clearance several years ago.

A site was chosen in Langham but the RM of Corman Park however there was considerable opposition in the rural municipality. As a

result the RM council has turned down a rezoning application which would allow the facility to be built.

This is a huge opportunity for another Saskatchewan community. The question is whether or not Biggar Town Council is up to the challenge. It is a chance to revitalize Biggar. A chance to bring more people to town. A chance for more students in our schools. A chance for more people using recreational facilities. A chance for Biggar to grow.

At the very least this opportunity should be explored. And, the residents of Biggar should make sure council does explore this avenue. Make sure you talk to the councillors and mayor about this. Make sure you voice your opinion. Make sure councillors have the facts.

As for town council, they need to make sure this process is open and accountable.

Don’t hide it on websites and closed meetings. Voters need (and deserve) to know where you stand on the growth of the town.

Size of government matters

by Jason Clemens, Executive Vice President, Fraser Institute; Jake Fuss, Policy Analyst, Fraser Institute; Milagros Palacios, Associate Director, Addington Centre for Measurement, Fraser Institute In one way or another every public policy debate ultimately comes down to a decision between whether resources are best kept by the workers, entrepreneurs and businesses that create them versus government extracting resources through taxation and borrowing to use for the priorities they deem more important.

There are important lessons to be learned by contrasting the approaches to the size of government and subsequent economic results of the Chretien and current Trudeau Liberals.

There are two measures by which to gauge the size of government. The first is per person spending. By this measure, the Trudeau Liberals have implemented a historically large role for government.

In 2018-19, the fiscal year that just ended, the federal government spent more money per person (program spending) in the history of Canada, which includes the Great Depression, the

Second World War and the more recent Great Recession. Specifically, in 2018-19, per person federal program spending (adjusted for inflation) reached $8,869, roughly $23 more than the previous all-time high recorded

by Prime Minister Harper’s government in the depths of the Great Recession.

Put differently, the 10.2 per cent increase in inflationadjusted per person spending implemented by the Trudeau Liberals means that current spending is at historic levels with no comparison when one considers that the previous peaks all occurred during wars or recession.

During the early reform period of the Chretien government, per person spending (adjusted for inflation) was reduced by 16.5 per cent, from $6,955 to $5,806.

Spending increased over the coming years but was still lower at the end of the Chretien years than when the Chretien Liberals took office. For reference, current per person spending by the Trudeau Liberals is one-third higher than the per person spending level at the end of the Chretien era.

Another way to measure the size of government is to compare government

spending with the size of the economy. It measures the degree to which the government is involved in directing the resources of an economy.

Since taking office in 2015, the Trudeau government has increased the share of the economy consumed by

per cent in 2000-01. It subsequently inched up slightly under both Prime Minister Paul Martin and Prime Minister Harper.

The larger size of government introduced under the Trudeau Liberals is important because of the

government spending by 12.2 per cent. More specifically, federal government spending has increased from 13.0 per cent of the economy to 14.6 per cent.

This stands in stark contrast with the Chretien government, which reduced the share of the economy consumed by government spending from a high of 17.1 per cent the year they were elected (1993) to a low of 11.8

substantial body of economic research indicating that the size of government matters to both economic growth and social progress. The idea is fairly straightforward—when governments focus on needed goods and services and limit their involvement in other areas, both economic growth and social progress are higher than when government is involved in areas where it’s not needed and

recession. Economic growth expectations have fallen markedly under the Trudeau government from 2.0 per cent when they took office to 1.6 per cent currently.

Business investment is collapsing and investment

by Canadians outside the country is up 73.7 per cent from 2013 to 2017 while investment by foreigners in Canada is down 55.1 per cent during the same period.

Employment rates are trending down in large measure because of demographics, indeed, one of the reasons for the historically low unemployment rate is the decline in labour force participation as more and more Canadians retire.

The reality, contrary to the view of this federal government, is that the degree to which governments appropriate the resources of society through taxes and borrowing matters when it comes to economic growth and social progress. The current government has expanded the size and scope of government with slower growth and less prosperity.

It’s time to recapture the lessons (and prosperity) of the Chretien era.

The data for Canada, most recently updated in 2013 by Prof. Livio Di Matteo, indicates that the optimal size of government—including federal, provincial and local—is roughly 26 to 30 per cent of GDP when economic growth and social progress is concerned. These numbers generally comport with international research. The most recent projection for Canada’s size of government is a little more than 40 per cent of GDP, well above the optimal level.

The reductions in the size of government by the Chretien Liberals were accompanied by strong economic growth, record levels of private-sector job growth, strong investment and low unemployment. Put simply, the Chretien era was an incredibly prosperous period for the country despite the austerity imposed on the federal and many provincial governments.

This stands in contrast to the weak economy presided over by both the Harper and Trudeau governments. Recall that government expanded under the Harper government in large measure due to the reactions to the 2008-09

While the internet connects computers together it was the world wide web that adds completes the process. The technology behind the web is what links the information together and makes it accessible to everyone.

To simplify the whole world of URL and HTTP, the web is really a collection of webpages which is found on the computer network.

Your browser uses the the internet to access the web. Although the internet was already in existence it wasn’t until browsers and the world wide web came along that people were able to access the information freely.

Companies jumped on the bandwagon and during the 1990s there were a number of web browsers all touting the same thing. Web-based technologies sprouted up and the number of choices almost became overwhelming. One of them stood out and soon everyone was using

Google to search for information. In fact, “googling” has become a household verb rather than just the name of a company.

All of this spawned social networking sites, blogs, video sharing, “apps”, and so much more. It changed the way communications are delivered.

It may be embraced by the masses but not all share the view the internet has made the world a better place. The inventor, Berners-Lee himself is not completely happy with the way things have progressed.

In his view it has

become a place where personal data has become compromised by tech giants; a place where elections are being tampered with; a place that hate speech can thrive. All of these are not what the inventor envisioned. As he says there needs to be a balance between oversight and freedom.

American photographer Rick Smolan said, “Every time there’s a new tool, whether its Internet or cell phones or anything else, all these things can be used for good or evil.

Technology is neutral; it depends on how it’s used.”

Y.T. (Yours Truly!) has had quite a few contacts with mayors here and there. Some good and some not so good!

Some years ago another golfer and myself were playing on the Biggar Golf Course – Y.T. made an unusual dandy hit on No. 2 which went way down the fairway just as two men (both mayors) walked out of the trees.

We hadn’t seen them and yelled “Fore!” a little too late.

“Whamo!” one of them got hit amidships. Down he went!

Needless to say, we ran down to where he lay

moaning and all the way I could hear our young children crying “Mommy when does Daddy get out of jail?” And all the way knowing that I probably never would!

The man just lay there as we walked up ... and then he sat up!

“Sorry Bob,” he said. “I didn’t know it was open season on mayors!”

He rose up and and we shook hands all around.

“This is Al Brissette, Mayor of Delisle,” he said. He didn’t have to introduce us for Y.T. had known Al for years.

Mayors I have known was responsible for Y.T. golfing. It is nice to say that Vic totally recovered and here we go on with more of Al Brissette!

Al was not the famous type (like Dick Whitlington, et cetera). Al was not noted for his managerial know-how but will be remembered for his pranks of which he had/did many.

Y.T. worked with him at Cominco for some years ago and witnessed many – mostly filling my rubber boots with golf balls. I don’t know where Al is now, but I do remember some of his pranks. I’ll always remember Al Brisette!

Mebbe this is one for

We were patrolling a Dutch town one night when a man in an obvious uniform walked by us. We arrested him.

Although he protested (in Dutch), we took him down to Major McCordic.

We tried our best to make sense of Bob Mason his European talk but because he never spoke any English the Major told us to take him down to the Bergemeister, Mayor of Waalwisk.

The Bergemeister told us that he was the town policeman in uniform and that he was patrolling the streets!

We had a good laugh but when he came to the house we were billeted at to see his girlfriend (who lived there) we sure calmed down a bit. After all he was the town cop!

He never wore that uniform again in all the time we were in Waalwisk.

You can’t won them all, eh?

Our Colonel had been killed as we attacked Freisothe (in Northern Germany) and the General gave this message: “Burn all the town!”

“Wasp” flame thrower from battalion headquarters threw flames at almost every building in the town. Most of us were gathered in the only building left in the town, when this old man walked in. He was one of the few people we saw in that place and I think he was the mayor!

There were some old pipes on the table and he handed me one, gesturing at the burning town.

He said in fair English that when I looked at the pipe I should remember Freisothe!

It hung on the wall beside my easy chair at home for many years, but is now in the display window here at Biggar Health Centre.

I’m not sure whether he was the mayor or not, but he did have a white collar on backwards!

Y.T. was sitting in the ballroom of the Saskatchewan Hotel when suddenly the man next to me exploded.

“You darn fool!” he said.

And seemed quite excited about it!

“Were you talking to me?” I asked him.

“No,” he replied. “I’m the Mayor of Regina and I was to address two groups this afternoon ... and here I was studying the wrong speech!”

As a member of the “Home and School” delegation I asked: “Are you Henry Baker?”

We shook hands.

“I didn’t know I was so famous,” he replied. “At

school I was elected as the person less likely to succeed!”

Over the years Baker had become well known!

The last (and certainly not the least) of the mayors mentioned here is the mayor of our old home town up across the river!

When Mother came West one of the Ontario ladies came with her!

Over those years when we were at Radisson as youngsters we visited her friends home many times. Her husband, Mayor Tom Weedon was a fine man who we respected. When we visited them they were always glad to see us!

He even showed me how to play checkers, and he beat me every time! He even beat me at “give away”!

How cruel can you get, eh?

All was well though until The Depression came along!

We ate at their table many times and Y.T. often wondered where he got such nice cuts of meat! We found out later that he was also the town butcher! We enjoyed the Weedon’s company for many years!

Of course we met other mayors in our suspect lifetime, and mebbe some of them remember us! But we must close now, lest they get a “hit man” to get us!

Sorry to anyone in Perdue who might remember Phyllis and I from 1947!

New Horizons has been a hub of activity over the past couple of weeks.

At Monday Kaiser on March 4, we had eight players. The winners were: Joyce Colbert in first with 224 points, Linda Vermette in second with 220 points, Joanne Kral in third with 187 points, and Ken Pearce in fourth with 164 points.

The highest scoring game was played by Linda Vermette and Joyce Colbert with 85 points. On March 18 the winners were: Pat Turner in first with 212 points, Ann Muc and Isla Solanik tied for second with 200 points each, and Vera Halter came in third with 194 points. The highest scoring game was played by Pat Turner and Ann Muc with 59 points.

On March 5, PALS host-

ed their annual Pancake Supper, which is always a delight. On March 11 we had our monthly Birthday Potluck. Happy birthday to Aileen Smith, Yvonne Slater, Ruth Arnold, Kathy Beadle, Nettie Beckett, Joyce Colbert, Ernie Itterman, Willa McIlwain, Linda Mears, Helen Nahorney and Stephanie Zapski.

The birthday party was attended by 33 people and the winner of the half-and-half draw was Joanne Kral. For anyone interested in attending future birthday potlucks, it is a celebration with cake and entertainment that is open to the public.

We sell half-and-half tickets during the celebration for $0.50 per ticket and the winner walks away with half of the cash pot.

New Horizons is home to the Lenten Services on Fridays from March 15 to April 12. So far there have been two very well

received services with soup, sandwiches and sermons.

We had 13 players out for Bingo on March 14.

The winner of both the half-and-half game and the blackout game was Evelyn Poletz. She must have had her lucky socks on that day.

On March 20 we had our monthly Jam Session with around 50 people in attendance. We had some fantastic performances

by Keith Aldridge, Caledonia Donahue, Bill Hoffermehl, Stan Gardner, Bob Wiseman and Bob McQuire. Bob Wiseman also recited some very entertaining “cowboy poetry.”

Water is our greatest resourse

by Calvin Daniels Recently there was an interesting post on one of the social media outlets many of us visit about the common home lawn, and why we have them?

I reposted the item, but the next day it was gone, which may mean the accreditation was incorrect, but the basic gist was something that was worth some thought.

The meme questioned why we work so hard to maintain a non-native grass lawn that is a monoculture (the cultivation of a single crop in a given area), and use a significant amount of fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides in the process? I might also add the question about the amount of water poured onto lawns just in Canada in a year,

let alone worldwide?

Certainly the idea of pesticide use is one we need to consider for something nonessential like a lawn, when we are increasingly aware of the importance on bees in pollinating food crops.

Moving forward, it is rather obvious water is going to become a resource we will need to manage better, in particular potable water. It stands to reason lawns will need to be a long way down the allowable usage – some

might argue the outright wastage – of our water resource.

So why do we spend so much time and resources to the grass in our front yard, a space we rarely use for more than looking at?

A little Internet Calvin Daniels search and I found this at todayifoundout.com.

“It is believed that such lawns were deliberately cultivated around English and French castles starting in the 16th century. However, it’s thought that chamomile and thyme were commonly used at this point for these deliberate lawns, instead of grass.

Both are great alternatives that require less maintenance than traditional turf grass.”

The same site also noted; “a man named Frederick Law Olmstead, the “father of American landscape design” — who you might know as the man who designed Central Park in New York — was also designing suburbs where each house had its own little lawn. This further popularized the idea that houses should have grass lawns.”

Agriculture continues to see strong budget support The Ministry of Agriculture’s budget will increase three per cent in 2019-20 to $391.3 million, ensuring programming to support the success of farmers, ranchers and agribusinesses continues.

The budget fully funds business risk management programs and sustains investments in agricultural research. This will encourage our agriculture sector to continue to grow.

“This provincial budget provides a stable foundation for Saskatchewan’s farm and ranch families with increases to the right programs and services,” Agriculture Minister David Marit said. “This budget provides program enhancements and continued investment in research.”

In response to feedback from stakeholders and producers on the Pest Biosecurity Program introduced last year, funding to the Rat Control component of the program will increase by $350,000 to $1.25 million. This increased

funding will be directed to grants paid to rural municipalities and First Nation bands, to cover the cost incurred for rat inspections and bait.

The 2019-20 Budget contains $271.9 million to fully fund business risk management programs offered under the federal-provincial Canadian Agricultural Partnership (CAP), including Crop Insurance, AgriStability, AgriInvest and Western Livestock Price Insurance.

The Crop Insurance program includes a number of enhancements for 2019-20, including higher coverage on tame and native grazing land to better reflect the losses producers experience during a shortfall in forage production.

Approximately 30 million acres are anticipated to be insured under Crop Insurance this year.

The government continues to invest $31.9 million in agricultural research, with funding for research projects, demonstration and adop-

tion of new technologies.

The research funding is part of the $71.2 million that will be invested this fiscal year into strategic programs under the fiveyear CAP agreement.

This budget continues to support a number of industry organizations, with funding for groups that include Agriculture in the Classroom Saskatchewan, Saskatchewan 4-H Council, and Farm and Food Care Saskatchewan. These organizations, among others, help build trust in agriculture, develop future leaders and support a sustainable industry.

Saskatchewan’s agriculture sector is an important part of the province’s diverse economy. Producers harvested a crop of more than 35 million tonnes in 2018, the sixth consecutive year the provincial harvest has been more than 30 million tonnes. Saskatchewan’s 2018 total agri-food exports were $13.4 billion, an increase of more than 60 per cent since 2010.

The most massive T. Rex ever discovered calls Saskatchewan home It’s official, Saskatchewan’s own Scotty is the most massive T. rex ever found!

“Scotty the T. rex is an excellent attraction to the province for residents both inside and out of Saskatchewan,” Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Gene Makowsky said. “There is already a replica of Scotty at the T. rex Discovery Centre in Eastend, and very soon there will be

one at the Royal Saskatchewan Museum in Regina, I encourage everyone to visit both locations and discover more about our province’s history.”

A draft paper st published online on March 21, 2019 in The Anatomical Record shares that palaeontologists from the University of Alberta and Florida State University revealed that Scotty is estimated to have weighed 8,870 kg, “a body mass exceeding all other known T. rex specimens and representatives of all other gigantic terrestrial theropods.”

About 65 per cent of Scotty’s fossilized bones were found at the dig site, which makes Scotty one of the most complete T. rex skeletons ever found.

Scotty’s history dates back to August 16, 1991.

At that time, high school teacher Robert Gebhardt was looking for fossils in the Frenchman River Valley near the town of Eastend with Royal Saskatchewan Museum palaeontologist Tim Tokaryk, when he discovered the fossilized remains of the now famous 65-millionyear-old T. rex. In June 1994, palaeontologists began the long excavating process of this large skeleton. Once removed, the 20-year process of exhibiting an exact copy began.

He was predeceased by his parents Charles and Maria [Mattson] Ledding, his brothers Walter and Clarence, his beloved wife for 57 years Nora, niece Eleanor Ledding, sisters-in–law Ellen and Frances Ledding, brothers and sisters-in-law Dan & Isobel McAvoy, Joe and Isobel McAvoy, and Jim Murphy. Marvin left behind son Dr. M. David [Marie] children-Jeff, Eric, Dr. Kris, Carl, Janine, Yvette, Paul. Son Dr. Daniel [Judy] children Andrea, Matthew, Dr. Kevin, Tim. Daughter Mary- Children Michael, Jennifer, Kirsten, Corryn. Daughter Nora. Daughter Linda [David Stevens], children Brandyn, Kim, Kathryn. Son Dr. Ted [Brenda] children Jeremy, Teneille, Brooke. Daughter Lois [Dr. Raymond Tervo] children Dr. Chris, Mark, Sarah. Marvin valued education and encouraged all his children and grandchildren to further their Post Secondary Education. In addition, Marvin also had 47 great grandchildren.

Most of them had the opportunity to get to know him and he knew them well. They always brought a sparkle to his eyes, a box of chocolates and some games to play while he updated himself on their lives and just had fun. Family was important to him. He also loved his nieces and nephews and they brought him pride and joy. Marvin was born and raised at Parkside, SK. where he attended school when he was not out walking trap lines, working and entrepreneuring to survive the hard times of the thirties. Later Marvin attended a dairying Course in Wpg. He went on to work in the Parkside Dairy Pool where he met his wife Nora. He said that she was the best wife he could ever have had. They then moved to Biggar SK where he spent the rest of his life. He worked and did management at the dairy pool in Biggar until his family outgrew his income. At this time he hired on to the CNR and worked as a Trainman –conductor for 32 years after which he retired to community service for another 36 years. He spent his last years in Rosetown at the home of his son David and with Marie and his wonderful caregiver Jenifer Garcia’s help it became Dad’s harbour for family interaction. Later he went to the Rosetown Health Center and then Rose Villa Care home where he received exceptional care. Marvin was dedicated to making the world a better place and helping those who needed assistance. He coached baseball, belonged to the Elks and Kinsmen. He spend 20 years on the hospital board most of that as chairperson, he was chair of St. Gabriels School Board for 12 yrs and was responsible for them getting a new school. He was named to the Provincial Educational Council for 6 years and spent his energy to getting Healthy Lunches in the schools and helping the disadvantaged in the Schools. He was on the town council for more than 28 yrs and retired at the age of 80, going back regularly to help with tax appeals. He was politically active and acted as Premier Woodrow Lloyds campaign leader. He was very active in the 1962 medicare crisis and on the community clinic board always acting to improve health care access.

He drove the courtesy car in Biggar for years and on his 90th birthday he made 37 calls. When he told his great- grandchildren this, they said “but how old are the old people then?”

Marvin believed in for community service and many years of volunteerism. He kept an extremely sharp mind to his last days. He knew by heart his sin #, bank account #s and every one of his friends’ and family’s phone numbers. He loved to visit and even surprised strangers by telling them things about their families they did not know. His life is written up in the Biggar history, “One Hundred People- One Hundred Years”. His health deteriorated the last years but he always said “as long as I can do some good there is a reason to keep living.” Some say with his Family he left a big footprint. Others say that he left a big Blueprint on how to live a fulfilled life. Marvin chose Cremation, his Funeral is on Saturday March 30th at one pm at St. Theresa’s Church in Rosetown, Sask. Lunch will be served for all afterwards in the Church’s Auditorium. Friends and family are welcome to stay afterwards and share memories, visit and and share a pot luck before heading home. Town of Asquith Council News for March Asquith Town Council held their regular council meeting on March 13.

Attending were Mayor Gail Erhart, Councillors Harold Edwards, Jeff Eide, Dylan Claypool, Ted Goodnough and Sue Sawicki. Also attending were CAO Holly Cross, Administrative Assistant Kathy Picketts and Foreman Darren Kraft.

The meeting was called to order at 6:59 p.m.

A resolution was made to accept the February 13 regular council meeting minutes as presented.

The February 2019 financial statements and the February bank reconciliations were presented to

the Council and a motion was made to accept them as presented.

Council made a motion to accept the accounts paid report of $23,963.28 and the accounts payable report of $19,401.49 as presented.

Notice was given to Council that Kelly Block, MP will be including the Town of Asquith in her Spring Tour, and would be at the Asquith Seniors Center on March 27.

The Asquith Town Council decided to hold a Spring Waste Clean Up Days on May 25 and May 26 that will allow residents to dispose of large refuse in bins and also

to dispose of metal items in a recycle bin. More information will be made available to the public closer to the actual date of the event.

The Town Council has also set the days that residents within the Town of Asquith can dispose of “clean waste” such as tree branches, unpainted and untreated wood, leaves, garden refuse, et cetera. The disposal area will be at the old Asquith Landfill site and will be supervised. A notice with the dates will be sent out with the March utility billings and it is suggested that individuals keep the notice for future

Saskatchewan grew by over 11,000 people in 2018 Saskatchewan’s population grew by 11,459 people in 2018 to 1,168,423, according to new figures released March 21 by Statistics Canada.

Saskatchewan has now grown by nearly 160,000 people since 2007, the most growth in the province since the 1920s.

“Saskatchewan is a welcoming place,” Immigra-

tion and Career Training Minster Jeremy Harrison said. “It is a province of opportunity and that’s why people from all over the world are choosing to make Saskatchewan their new home.”

Saskatchewan’s population growth in 2018 was driven by net international migration of 15,203 people and a natu-

ral increase (births minus deaths) of 6,138, partially offset by net interprovincial migration of 9,882.

“Saskatchewan has now enjoyed over a decade of strong growth,” Harrison said. “The new provincial budget released yesterday is the right balance to keep our economy strong and our province growing.”

The Asquith Fire Department and the Asquith First Responders will once again be holding their Annual Pig Roast on Saturday, June 8. Keep in mind that donations for the Silent Auction are very welcome! A Show

Asquith Town Council resolved to pay for the security for the Street Dance to be held the evening of the Pig Roast. A community event license was issued as well to the Asquith Fire Department for holding a beer gardens at the event. To accommodate the Street Dance,

Asquith Town Council is allowing the closure of the 400 block of Main Street for the day and is also extending The Noise Bylaw to 12 a.m.

Spring is here and of course with spring comes issues of water and drainage. It is suggested that all residents ensure that there are no ice dams on their roofs and that their eavestroughs are working correctly and that they are pointed away from the foundation of the home.
