Heartland Health Region saved $12,690 on multi-million-dollar Lean pet project The government’s Lean pet project is again showing that it isn’t saving any money while it makes health care worse, according to a fourth region now reporting meagre savings on the pricey program, according to the NDP Documents obtained through access to information laws show that Heartland Health Region reports saving only $12,690 through John Black’s Lean program, the NDP said, December 17.

That amount joins the $26,648 the Cypress Health Region reporting saving as a result of John Black’s version of Lean; the $17,465 in savings reported by Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region; and the $131.26 saved in the Prince Albert Parkland Health Region. John Black Lean is in its fourth year in Saskatchewan.

“We know health care and patient safety is getting worse – surveys of doctors and health professionals tell us that, the government’s Health Quality Council statistics tell us that, and the record number of critical incidents reported in the Health Ministry’s annual report tells us that,” said NDP leader Cam Broten. “On top of the concerns about the quality of care, John Black’s version of Lean is costing us untold millions and not even

returning a fraction of that in savings.

“This government has drunk the Kool-Aid on John Black’s Lean program. It’s beyond time it realized John Black Lean isn’t good for patients, and it’s sucking valuable resources away from the frontlines of care to pay for more administration and consulting fees.”

Broten says the government is shovelling money to its Lean pet project, including $40 million for Black, an American Lean Consultant; $3,500 per day for senseis plus $600 per day for their interpreters; and at least $17 million per year for Kaizen Promotion Offices mandated by Black. The government is also spending untold millions on travel expenses to send nearly 1,000 Saskatchewan health care workers to Utah and Seattle to visit an air bag factory and small private health centre, he added.

Broten said the

program has gone way too far, and it’s time to get rid of John Black.

“Internal documents show that senior leaders in the health care system say John Black is a toxic influence who gossips, undermines health professionals and tattles on them if they question his methods.

Health care workers say Lean isn’t working.

Even the independent provincial auditor looked at the Provincial Kaizen Promotion headquarters and reported that Lean is an uncoordinated mess. The auditor said things will improve once the government cuts ties with John Black.

“It’s time to cancel the damaging John Black Lean program and send this $40 million consultant back to the United States. We can’t afford to keep wasting untold millions for such minimal return, and we could never afford this project’s harmful effects on patients and patient care.”

As of October 1, there were 1,129,899 people living in Saskatchewan,

an increase of 4,489 in the past quarter and 18,102 in the past year.

Premier BradWall noted it was just seven years ago that Saskatchewan’s population hit one million people.

“Since then, we have seen steady growth of another 130,000 people – nearly 20,000 per year,” Wall said. “That kind of growth creates both opportunities and challenges. One of those challenges will be to keep our economy and our population growing in 2015 in the face of falling oil revenues.

Our government will be working hard to meet this challenge through sound fiscal management, continued investment in important

infrastructure projects and tax incentives for new growth and job creation.

“The good news is that Saskatchewan’s economy is a lot more diversified than it was just a few years ago, so a slowdown in one sector can be offset by growth in other areas. That’s why we continue to enjoy the strongest rate of job creation and the lowest unemployment rate in the country, in addition to continued population growth.”

Over the past year, Saskatchewan had the second-strongest rate of population growth among the provinces, behind only Alberta.

Moscow and lies on the northeast coast of the Black Sea near the border with Georgia.

This Valentine’s Day had some sad news to report. John Henson, who was the son of Muppet creator Jim Henson, died of a heart attack. He was 48 years old. He was a shareholder in the Jim Henson Company as well as a puppeteer for the Muppets frequently playing Sweetums, a large hairy ogre. Later this year, Sesame Street celebrated its 45th anniversary.

Henson’s most beloved and signature Muppet is Kermit, the Frog who was actually created in 1950 and appeared in

Sam and Friends. Later Kermit and Rowlf the Dog appeared in skits on late night talk shows and commercials. But, in 1969 Sesame Street debuted and the world of Muppets blossomed.

More characters were introduced -- Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, The Great Gonzo and Animal as part of the Sesame Street gang. Then came the movies -- Muppet Movie, Great Muppet Caper and Muppets Take Manhattan.

In the 1980s Disney became involved and acquired Jim Henson Productions and the Muppets franchise.

Now the Muppets are a household name.

I told the story of

Hannah Taylor who set out to eliminate homelessness. This led me to a website www. ladybugfoundation.ca where I learned more about this young girl and her efforts to help homeless people across the country.

The story starts when Hannah was 5 and saw a man eating out of a garbage can during a wintry day.

“If everyone shared what they had, could that cure homelessness,” she wondered.

She was terribly upset and this scene bothered her. Her mother said, “sometime when you worry and feel sad about things, if you do something to change the problem, your heart won’t feel so sad.”

It’s hard to capsulize a whole year into a short column. For me these were highlights of a truly great year. May 2015 be as kind.

One more year down and we look forward to the beginning of a new year. 2014. There were some good times and some sad times. As has become the tradition, this column will reflect on some past writings.

February. The Olympic Winter Games opened in Sochi. Canada’s medal count ended with 10 gold, 10 silver and five bronze. There were 222 Canadian competitors.

It was a Canadian record of four double podiums, all in freestyle skiing.

And who can forget the double double? Gold in men’s and women’s ice hockey. Followed by gold in men’s and women’s curling. I know we watched on the computers at work and there were lots of cheers during the day.

Mascots are a tradition at Olympic games. Appropriately three animals were chosen by the Sochi organizers -- the Polar Bear, the European Hare, the Amur Leopard. All three very good choices for a Winter Olympics being held in a northern clime.

Sochi. With a population of 400,000 it is considered the longest city in Europe at 148 km (or 92 miles) along the Caucasus Mountains and is a resort city in the Krasnodar Krai territory. It is located 1,600 km south of

W3 I suppose that very few people will ever get to read some of these immortal (or is that spelled immoral?) lines taken from Yours Truly’s “Ye Olde Life and Times”, for they haven’t got the same (appeal?) that the diaries of Cleopatra and Sarah Bernhardt may have! Actually they are only a kind of hackledup bunch of records from Y.T.’s own tainted past!

He does tell the truth mostly though, except that the “truth” (especially in his case!) is often kind of dull, with the result that he colours some entries up a bit, until even he thinks that he has led an exciting, adventurous life!

Some years ago Yours Truly made a remark

about a guy he knew one time – and that some incident had reminded him of him – but, darn it, he not only couldn’t even remember what had reminded him!

“My memory is shot!” he thought. He had no choice! He picked up his pen and started to mark things down before he forgot them all entirely!

It’s a good thing he never marked down everything he knew, eh?

Or there would have been quite a few empty pages in the “Ye Olde L and T!” Hey! That reminds me of a guy I knew one time!

When John Diefenbaker was making a speech up north a heckler from the crowd yelled: “Tell them everything

you know John, it sure as hell won’t take very long to tell all that you know!”

To which “the Chief” replied: “I’ll tell them all that we both know, it won’t take any longer!”

Y.T. sure likes a lot of political jokes, eh? But some political speeches almost make him want to cry!

Seeing that Y.T. has finally admitted his memory isn’t so good, some of the below stuff (from “Ye Olde L and T”) is bound to be kind of boring – so don’t blame the Editor if he falls asleep at his desk eh?

Of the some 3,000 entries in that old list that he calls “The Olde L and T” all of them actually happened!

Actually they couldn’t be otherwise because our folks had always urged us “To thine own self be true!”

And because those records were made for him to read, Y.T. would think himself crazier than usual if he tried to remember things that hadn’t really happened!

Also, Jim Grant (one of the buyers at Cominco Potash), put it on the wall above his desk and never sent an order numbered 105485!

9.50 owing: When: some years ago at a Boy Scout Jamboree. Where: at Prince Albert. Yours Truly was called on to escort one of the Scout mistresses to a special church. What: and when the collection plate was passed, found that all he had in his wallet was a ten dollar bill!

Rather than explain to the plate-passer “No thank you, I have some at home!” he dropped the $10 bill on the plate knowing darn well that (if he had lived long enough!), the minister would send him $9.50 change.

Mind you this was about 60 years ago, and that minister must be 120 or so old by now, but some day he will think of it! And Y.T. has $9.50 coming, eh?

127 years old! Some years ago (when!) Walt died, our little grandson was very impressed by his medals and said to Yours Truly “Grandpa, can I have your medals?”

As Y.T. was 77 at the time he made a quick guess and said grimly, “Yah gotta wait thirty years!”

Calmly he looked at me and said quietly, “I might even have to wait ‘till you die!”

Y.T. pretended he was indignant and pounded a nearby table, “In that case,” Y.T. answered wildly, “you are gonna have to wait fifty years!”

He never batted an eye, he turned to Phyllis who was standing near and said matter-of-factly.

“Gramma, what is 77 and 50?”

“127!” she said.

It’s right out of my hands, eh? When Y.T. is 127 years old, our Grandson is going to want those medals, eh?

It’s a pretty sure thing that W3 will never be shown by the CBC, but some of it’s scattered pieces, when shown on the big screen of Y.T.’s memory, are going to keep him from going crazy! (No final wisecracks, eh?)

Little bit of homespun philosophy: In his hypocritical way, as Y.T. looks back through his “Olde L and T”, he is apt to think things like: “Been there! Having spent most of his life as a “Let Bob do it!” type (except for women, who seemed dedicated to just the opposite! Mebbe Y.T. was using the wrong brand of Brylcreme, eh?), Yours Truly had to find something to do, so he picked up his pen again!

He tried everything, became a “Jack-of-alltrades and master of none,” reporting most of his memorable times in “Ye Olde L and T” (well, they were important to him!).

Multi-Material recycling program to launch in the new year The Government of Saskatchewan is moving forward with implementation of a province-wide Multi-Material Recycling Program (MMRP) that will launch in early 2015.

MMRP is a cost-sharing program between businesses and municipalities to help pay for the collection and recycling of household packaging and paper materials. Currently, municipal recycling programs are paid for by municipalities.

Under MMRP, busi-

nesses and organizations that distribute packaged goods and paper to households in the province will now share responsibility for the cost of recycling these materials.

“Our government is committed to seeing effective and sustainable municipal recycling programs for the residents of Saskatchewan,” Environment Minister Scott Moe said. “After careful consideration of feedback from various stakeholders over the past number of months, we are

adjusting the program to provide more clarity on how it will apply to various types of businesses.”

Businesses that distribute or sell packaging and paper products in Saskatchewan are required under The Household Packaging and Paper Stewardship Program Regulations to participate in MMRP. The program will be operated by Multi-Material Stewardship Western (MMSW), a non-profit organization.

In July of this year, the Minister announced that

Support of Saskatchewan Youth Apprenticeship Industry Scholarship remains strong Saskatchewan youth are motivated to enter into the skilled trades due to the many rewarding career options available to them and can be supported by scholarships made possible by donations from industry and matching support from the Government of Saskatchewan.

Between April of 2013 and June of 2014, eight industry organizations donated a total of $92,000 to the Saskatchewan Youth Apprenticeship (SYA) Industry Scholarship. This generous support provides opportunities for youth who have graduated from the SYA Program and enter into apprenticeship in one of the 49 designated trades and 20 subtrades.

“SYA Industry Scholarships encourage young people to enter the skilled trades and become apprentices,” Saskatchewan Apprenticeship Board Chair Garry Kot said. “Donating to the scholarship program

is one of many ways industry gives back to apprenticeship and trade certification and helps grow the next generation of skilled workers.”

Since the program was initiated in 2009 by the SATCC, the Saskatchewan Construction Association and industry partners, 42 organizations have donated $622,000.

The Government of Saskatchewan, through the Saskatchewan Innovation and Opportunity Scholarship also contributes to the program through matching donations.

“Partnerships between government and industry are vital to the growth of Saskatchewan’s economy,” Minister responsible for Immigration, Jobs, Skills and Training Jeremy Harrison said. “Together, we are pleased to support youth as they enter into rewarding careers in the skilled trades.”

In 2013-14, Construc-

tion Labour Relations of Saskatchewan donated $50,000. The Canada West Equipment Dealers Association contributed $20,000 for their second donation. The Saskatchewan Construction Association raised an additional $10,000 this year, bringing their total contributions to $40,000.

The Canadian Welding Association – Regina Chapter, Ensign Energy Services, and Wright Construction each donated $10,000 to the scholarships, while Aim Electric and Highlander Crane contributed $1,000 each.

In 2014, 103 scholarships valued at $1,000 each were awarded to eligible high school graduates who completed the SYA program. The SYA Program encourages high school students to explore career opportunities in the skilled trades by providing awareness, research and hands-on experience.

the deadline for stewards to register with MMSW was being extended indefinitely. At that time, a commitment was made that further engagement and feedback from all stakeholders would be sought on the best way to move forward with MMRP. As a result of consultation, adjustments have been made to the program and will be finalized in the new year.

The proposed changes include the following: • Small businesses, including newspapers, that have a gross revenue of less than $2 million, or generate less than one tonne of packaging and paper, or operate as a single point of sale (not a franchise or chain) are fully exempt from participating in MMRP. • A two year temporary transition exemption will be in place for businesses whose annual revenue is between $2 and $5 million. These businesses

will not be required to report their tonnage of household packaging and paper during this period, but will be required to register with MMSW and contribute a $500 annual flat fee.

• The two year transition exemption will also apply to all larger newspapers (all those not captured within the small business exemption).

• During the two-year transitional period, a working group with representatives from municipalities, businesses, newspapers, and the waste reduction community will be supported by the Ministry of Environment, with an aim to identify further program adjustments that would bring mid-size businesses and larger newspapers into the MMRP. • During the two year transitional period, program fees will be set by the Minister of Environment and any changes to fees will be approved by

the Minister.

• The Ministry of Environment will reallocate $500,000 to help municipalities cover the costs of recycling over the twoyear transition period.

Businesses that do not fall into any of these categories are required to participate fully in MMRP. “We clearly heard that the costs and reporting requirements associated with MMRP could prove challenging for many within the small business community and the newspaper industry,” Moe said. “By exempting small businesses from the program, and allowing a transition period for mid-size businesses to come into compliance, we can continue working with all stakeholders toward a made-in-Saskatchewan solution that will assist municipalities with the cost of recycling and ultimately reduce waste.”

Alternative table fare

Sometimes a very random event brings a writer to an idea for a weekly column.

Recently I was in a local sandwich shop in Yorkton and decided to try the spicy black bean offering. I tend to like to try different things when out for a meal, and I do like spicy, so I figured why not.

Since I was able to customize the offering the way I wanted, sprouts, humus, feta cheese, and black olives et cetera, it tasted great.

But where the little push came in was the question from the gal making the pita sandwich; ‘was I a

vegetarian?’

I have to admit that is one question which I would have put high on my ‘never going to be asked that’ list. I grew up on a mixed farm, pigs, chickens, often a calf to raise over summer to butcher in the fall, so meat was part of every meal, and while I will occasionally happily graze a salad for supper, I am pretty far from the vegetarian lifestyle, not that there is anything wrong with making a personal choice in what we eat.

The question did have me thinking though.

In recent years I have

begun to consume far more pulse/legumes than I did when I was younger.

While mom and grandma grew green and yes those terrible yellow beans which were served in a tomato soup sauce, and there were of course pork ‘n beans on every camper trip, that was about it.

If a lentil came into the house back then it would have had to have been hidden in the rarely eaten store bought soup in a can. They were simply not heard of that I recall.

Since then I have found a love of Indian food where lentils and beans are widely used.

I have also found I have added lentils, green, red, Spanish and beluga to my own cooking. They were in the pumpkin chicken stew I whipped up for a Halloween gathering of friends, and they were in the traditional pot

of chili that was part of watching the recent Grey Cup. And it’s the same with beans, and even chickpeas, they are showing up on the plate on more regular basis as I learn how tasty they can be in a variety of dishes.

As my interest in eating lentils, beans and peas has grown, so too has Prairie farmer interest in growing the crops, in particular in Saskatchewan.

The United Nations is about to increase pulse crop awareness even more.

The organization has designated 2016,

International Year of Pulses.

Recently,Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall announced $100,000 in funding to support activities for the 2016 IYOP.The announcement was made in Mumbai, India, where the premier was touring promoting Saskatchewan as a supplier to India of food and fuel.

“The International Year of Pulses will act as a catalyst for heightened awareness of the vital role pulses play in the pursuit of global food security,” Wall said in a release. “As one of the world’s largest producers of pulses, the declaration

is an opportunity for Saskatchewan to showcase its leadership and pursue further export market development.”

I have to say I see the investment by the province as a good one, since pulse crops are an area which could see more farmers dedicating acres to given the huge world demand for the crops, and helping facilitate ties to a major user like India makes sense.

And from a personal perspective the more I learn about pulses, the more often they find their way to the cooking pot.

October wholesale trade numbers highest on record

Saskatchewan’s wholesale trade numbers reached new highs in October, hitting a record breaking $2.2 billion in sales and jumping 5.4 per cent (seasonally adjusted) over September 2014 according to Statistics Canada.

This had Saskatchewan taking top spot among the provinces in terms of percentage growth.

On a yearly basis, wholesale trade was up 12.1 per cent (seasonally adjusted), with Saskatchewan landing in second place among the provinces and outpacing the national average of 7.5 per cent.

“Wholesale trade is one of our key economic indicators and this month’s strong numbers are proof that Saskatchewan’s economy is on the right track,” Economy Minister Bill Boyd said. “We are fortunate to have a diverse economy, therefore our wholesale trade remains strong and is a major contributor to growth and prosperity in the province.”

Saskatchewan farm products, including livestock and grain, were the industry with the largest gains in October, totalling $288.2 million (seasonally unadjusted).

It’s time to walk away from smart meter manufacturer Sensus and demand a full refund, according to the NDP after yet another smart meter fire December 16.

NDP Deputy Leader Trent Wotherspoon also called on the government to come clean about the dangers of smart meters on homes over the winter.

It claimed Saskatchewan families would be safe because the rash of smart meter fires had been caused by rain, but with the December 16 fire in subzero temperatures, that’s obviously not true.

“It’s time to break it off with this company that has created one fire-prone dud model after another,” said Wotherspoon.

“Get our money back, and get Sensus meters out of Saskatchewan permanently.”

The government signed what the NDP called “a secret” settlement with Sensus, promising to give the American company another $18 million of Saskatchewan’s money, or buy more of the company’s smart meters in the future.

“That’s not on,” said Wotherspoon. “Sensus version 3.2 started fires in Saskatchewan and across North America. Sensus version 3.3 started fires in Saskatchewan and across North America.

Now the government is actually using taxpayer money to pay Sensus to come up with version 3.4, and expecting different results. That’s ludicrous.

“I don’t want a Sensus smart meter on my home – ever – and I don’t think other Saskatchewan families do, either.”

Wotherspoon said the NDP wants the government to recover

the $5 million gift it gave Sensus to develop a new meter, and the $18 million being held for the purchase of new Sensus smart meters. He added that the government should not rule out taking legal action to recover Saskatchewan ratepayers’ money if necessary.

Wotherspoon also reiterated his call for the government to make the removal of the dangerous smart meters an urgent priority, getting them off families’ homes much quicker than their current timeline.

Canada’s Environment Minister, the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, announced December 3 that the proposed StarOrion South Diamond Mine Project, located in Saskatchewan, is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects when the mitigation measures described in the Comprehensive Study Report are taken into account.

The Minister has referred the project back to the responsible authorities, Fisheries and Oceans Canada and Natural Resources Canada,

for appropriate action.

Shore Gold Inc. and the Fort à la Corne Joint Venture is proposing to construct, operate, maintain, and eventually decommission an open-pit diamond mine, processing facilities, and associated infrastructure in the Fort à la Corne Provincial Forest located approximately 60 kilometres east of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan.

In reaching her decision, the Minister considered the Comprehensive Study Report and the comments received from the public and Ab-

original groups on the report.

This project was assessed using a sciencebased approach in accordance with the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act. The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency administers the federal environmental assessment process, which identifies the environmental effects of proposed projects and measures to address those effects, in support of sustainable development.

Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program receives more nominations for 2014 The Government of Saskatchewan will be processing an additional 51 nominations under the Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program (SINP) in December 2014.

The Government of Canada made the announcement this morning, which could translate into 130 more newcomers to Saskatchewan on top of the approximately 12,000 that arrive in the province each year.

The number of nominees in Saskatchewan has increase from 1,517 in 2007 to 4,793 (an increase of 216 per cent). This number reflects both the provincial government’s commitment to welcoming newcomers to Saskatchewan to

help address the labour shortage and become part of the community, as well as the federal government’s recognition of the labour force shortage Saskatchewan faces now and in the future.

“Our conservative government in Ottawa is focused on growing the economy and creating jobs from coast to coast to coast,” said Federal Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Chris Alexander. “With Saskatchewan’s economy booming, it’s vital that newcomers to Canada know that opportunities abound on the Prairies.

For those who come to Canada, who play by the rules and who are willing to work hard, Saskatchewan is one

of the best places to be right now.”

The news of the increase comes on the heels of the federal government’s allocation of 17 additional nominations in November 2014. The combined increases for November and December will bring this year’s SINP nomination cap to 4,818 and will help to further address labour market shortages in the province.

“The extra nominations for 2014 are great news for our growing Saskatchewan economy,” Minister responsible for Immigration Jeremy Harrison said.

Gary Wayne Antonenko October 25,1951 - December 14, 2014 Gary Antonenko of Struan, Sask. passed away on Sunday, December 14, 2014 at the age of 63. Gary is survived by his partner, Constance Schwalm; his daughter, Emily; his two sons, Wayne (Korin) and Greg (Tina); and four grandchildren. He is also survived by his three sisters, Lorraine (Larry), of Chilliwack, B.C. Eleanor (Terry) of Calgary, Alta. and Sharon (Larry) of Edmonton, Alta., as well as several nieces and nephews, and his husky dog, Eli. He was predeceased by his parents.

Gary will be remembered for his quick wit, intelligence and honesty. He took great pride and joy in his gardening, which was obvious every year when he reaped the fruits of his labour. His vegetables, fruit trees and flowers were planted after much deliberation, and he gave without expecting anything in return. Coffee was always on at his house, and you never had to have an invitation to stop by. He will be greatly missed by those who loved him, and the world will never be the same without him, but the angels in heaven will be rejoicing.

The family would like to give a special thank you for all the kind care and attention given to Gary from the staff at St. Paul's Hospital Palliative care. If friends so desire memorial tributes may be made to the St. Paul's Hospital Palliative Care Dept. , Saskatoon, Sask. in memory of Gary.

Fill snow days with activities and fun A blizzard of white flakes has been falling through the night, and the school phone chain has begun.

As expected, children will have a day off from school, leaving parents scrambling for ways to keep children occupied and supervised.

Snow days may be coveted by kids (and teachers), but they may not be as beloved by parents who are unaccustomed to having kids home during the week.

Working parents whose businesses are open do not have the same luxury as their children to roll

over in bed and avoid trekking through the white stuff.

But just because snow days are unexpected, that does not mean parents can't plan for them. · Establish a snow day plan. Parents who cannot take days off from work will need a

contingency plan for snow days.

Organize a snow day club, wherein school parents rotate taking children for the day.

Working parents can reciprocate by taking the school kids on a weekend and letting the other parents have a "date night."

· Create a snow day entertainment bin. Rather than having kids spend the day watching television or playing on their tablets, parents can establish a snow day entertainment bin to encourage their kids to make the most of the day off. The bin can include board games, books, building block sets, paints, and other crafts. · Plan for an indoor picnic. Kids will probably want to spend a portion of the day playing out in the snow. After all of that physical activity, they're bound to be famished. Spread a blanket out on the living room floor and enjoy a picnic of sandwiches, snacks and hot chocolate.

Kids will enjoy the novelty of eating this way. · Get cooking. Another way to fill the day is to have children partici-

pate in making meals. A snowy day is a great time to prepare meals for the rest of the week, as well as tinker with hearty, belly-filling recipes.

Older children can help with cutting vegetables and meats, while younger kids can add seasonings to pots and mix ingredients. Involve the kids in choosing which meals to cook. Baking bread is another fun activity and enables kids to sculpt dough and then eat the fruits of their labors. · Go the movies.

If roads are passable, consider a trip to the movie theater, where you can enjoy a matinee. Bring a few friends along and make it a fun-filled outing. · Create snow art. Fill squeeze or squirt bottles with some water and food coloring. Allow kids to go out in the yard

and create some pictures with the snow as their canvas. · Catch up on cleaning. Cleaning may not be the most exciting snow day activity, but it might be the most productive. Children can spend time sorting through toys and belongings in their rooms. · Take a nature walk. Grab those boots and insulated pants and

head outdoors. A walk in the brisk, cold air can boost spirits and introduce kids to the beauty of winter landscapes. Take the camera along and encourage kids to snap pictures of their favorite vistas.

The Super Bowl is nearly here, and that means scores of football fans are readying themselves for a day spent fraternizing with friends and indulging in all of the great food that has become synonymous with the biggest day in American professional sports.

No football feast is complete without wings, and this year Super Bowl party hosts can satisfy their guests’ needs for this beloved bar snack with the following recipe for “Virgil’s Smoked Chicken Wings With Blue Cheese Dip” from Neal Corman’s “Virgil’s Barbecue Road Trip Cookbook” (St. Martin’s Press).

Virgil’s Smoked Chicken Wings With Blue Cheese Dip Serves 4 Blue Cheese Dip 2 cups blue cheese crumbles, divided 1 cup mayonnaise 1⁄2 cup buttermilk 2 teaspoons hot sauce 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 1⁄2 teaspoon kosher salt 1⁄4 cup finely chopped scallions 1⁄4 cup finely chopped celery Marinade 1⁄2 cup vegetable oil 1⁄2 cup hot sauce 4 tablespoons Virgil’s Dry Rub (see below) 4 tablespoons granulated garlic 4 tablespoons granulated onion Juice of 1⁄2 lemon Wings 8 large chicken wings 1⁄2 cup Virgil’s Dry Rub (see below) Sauce 10 1 4 3⁄4 1⁄4

1. To make the dip, combine 1 cup of the blue cheese, mayonnaise, buttermilk, hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and salt in the bowl of a food processor and blend on low until smooth.

2. Remove to a medium mixing bowl and fold in the

rest of the blue cheese, scallions and celery, being sure to break up the large blue cheese crumbles.

Place in a covered container and refrigerate overnight.

3. Mix all the marinade ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Place the wings in a large container with a lid and pour the mixture over the wings. Toss until the wings are thoroughly coated. Cover and refrigerate for 2 days.

4. Preheat the grill or smoker to 245 F. 5. Spread out the wings on a sheet pan and wipe away any excess marinade. Sprinkle liberally with the dry rub, coating the wings all over.

6. Position the wings on the grill away from the direct heat of the coals or burners, and add hickory to the smoker, or place hickory chips on the coals or gas burners.

7. Cook the wings for about 3 hours, flipping every 30 minutes (their internal temperature should be about 165 F when cooked).

8. While the wings are cooking, cut the butter for the sauce into 1-inch cubes and refrigerate. Whisk the cornstarch into the white vinegar in a small bowl.

9. In a medium sauté pan over medium heat, bring the hot sauce to a simmer and whisk in the thickened vinegar. Return to a simmer, cook for 1 minute, and remove from the heat.

10. Add the cayenne and slowly whisk in the cold butter. Keep warm until serving.

11. Remove the wings from the smoker or grill and put half of them into a bowl, cover with the sauce, and toss. Repeat with the remaining wings and serve on a platter, with the blue cheese dip on the side.

cups sweet paprika cup granulated sugar cup Texas-style chili powder cup minced onion cup granulated garlic cup dried parsley flakes tablespoons kosher salt

Combine all of the ingredients in a medium bowl and whisk together until completely incorporated.

Transfer to a covered bowl with a tight-fitting lid.

Store in a cool, dry place
