Well, they are not exactly ready for the retirement home, but Biggar Central School Alumni took to the court, Friday for a fun game of yesterday’s heros versus the current Blazer Senior Girls.

The wily vets with one former coach, put on a show as kids spent the last day before the February break cheering on past and present players. The older version of the Blazers held firm, winning 34-30.

Local cadet competes in biathlon Flight Corporal Logan Demaneka competed in the 2020 Stage III Provincial Cadet Biathlon Championships held at Camp Saskadet in Kelvington.

Demaneka is a cadet at 300 Fisher Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron in Biggar.

Demaneka became interested in biathlon because his commanding officer suggested it after witnessing his shooting skills and his proficiency in the cadet fitness assessment. He came to the competition knowing very little about skiing and being a competitor in the youth category, had to ski 7.5 kilometres.

Demaneka has enjoyed the challenge of biathlon. “it’s a good opportunity,” he explained. “I’ve made friends and tested my athletic capabilities.

In all, if you enjoy these things and wish to challenge yourself, I’d highly recommend cadet biath-

lon.”

Demaneka was amongst 54 cadets from across Saskatchewan competing at Camp Saskadet on February 8-9, testing their fitness, teamwork, and marksmanship skills over two days of racing. Cadets competed in three categories based on age, Cadet Junior (ages 12-13), Cadet Senior (ages 14-16) and Cadet Youth (ages 17-18) over the two day competition, with 10 cadets being selected to represent Saskatchewan at the National Cadet Biathlon Championship held in Valcartier, Quebec on March 1-8.

Throughout the race he shot two times, one in a prone position and one in a standing position.

Cadets competing in the Senior and Youth categories shoot once from a prone position and once from a standing position.

The Junior competitors shoot solely from prone position.

The cadet biathlon program is a recreational activity that has produced Olympians such as Emma Lunder and Jean-Phillippe Le Guel-

lec. The cadets learn valuable skills through the program that develop self-discipline, increased confidence and a sense of accomplishment.

Biggar vying for $10,000 prize Biggar is registered for the 2020 Saskatchewan Blue Cross Go Out and Play Challenge. The Challenge offers communities a chance to win $10,000 for a project that gets kids and families out to play.

The community that moves most during the 10-day Challenge wins the grand prize.

“We want it to be us!” said Angela Pollock, Chair of Friends of St. Gabriel School.

“We need everyone to help us win. We’re counting on residents, friends, neighbours and family members to get moving to win this year’s Challenge, March 1-10, 2020!” she added.

Friends of St. Gabriel School plan to put the grand prize to good use by using it for new playground equipment at the school. The school’s close proximity to the recreation facilities and Sandra Schmirler Olympic Gold Park, means that this will not only benefit our students but the community as a whole.

It’s easy to participate and log your physical activity online. Here’s what you need to do every day of the Challenge:

1.) Be physically active.

Don’t forget walking, active play and chores like shovelling snow.

2.) Log on to the Challenge Web site: challenge. saskatchewaninmotion. ca. Create a personal or family profile.

3.) Log your minutes of physical activity to add to Biggar’s total every day.

“We hope to work with local community groups to organize a few events to help get Biggar moving during the Challenge.

The Challenge is designed to encourage communities to think about the important role they play when it comes to providing opportunities for outdoor play.

A country held hostage is no longer a country We’ve seen small groups of malcontents hold cities and in fact, an entire country, hostage to a selfish agenda.

Witness the pipeline protesters blockading rail lines, holding hostage the Canadian economy. Protesting pipeline safety by blocking rail traffic? You made the case for a pipeline. Just ask anyone in Guernsey if pipelines are a better option than rail.

Agree or disagree, the right to protest is protected under our laws. But when you push your luck, you should get arrested.

Well . . . not in this case.

Police/RCMP are in a situation where they can’t win. They’ll be seen as heavy-handed, but the rule of the law needs to be enforced. But it is Jus-

tin Trudeau and the Liberals who are the ones who must - I stress must - make that decision to arrest for the betterment of the economy.

Without action by the government, fringe groups will become emboldened. Soon you have every protest imaginable, from “Save the Mosquitoes” to Winnipeg Blue Bomber banjo bans.

Now, I’m not a big banjo aficionado - more of an Eric Clapton guitar guy but anarchy would reign, the banjo ballads would fall silent, crushed under the heels of Bomber supporters, while Justin would hem and haw.

In Canada, it doesn’t seem right that wingnuts with the ‘60s protest bug can take down an entire economy. But they do.

And why? Poor leadership.

Justin galavants around the world, gushing about human rights in places where human rights abuses are rampant, and Transport Minister Marc Garneau looks like he’d much rather be back in space, stammering that it’s not up to Ottawa to clear the protesters.

That’s our “A-team”, folks. Tweedledee and Tweedledum. The real reason the law isn’t being enforced.

Nope. Canada is broken. Just a place of ecodummies and left-wing Marxists who don’t live here.

The Liberals have done that with shoddy governance.

Coop Refinery Labour Challenges the Rule of Law

“The rule of law is a fundamental pillar of our Canadian democracy.

When did the right to protest turn into the right to illegally impede the lives and livelihoods of lawabiding Canadians?”

Premier Scott Moe Even though the premier was commenting on illegal pipeline protests this week that blocked Canadian railways, ports and even a Legislature, the parallel to the Regina Co-op Refinery (“CCRL”) labour dispute is undeniable.

Over 700 refinery employees, members of Unifor, gave notice in early December that they were going on strike. As the law permits, the company locked them out.

Unlike public sector strikes involving taxpayers’ money and often essential services, most of us don’t have a dog in the hunt when a private dispute breaks out between an oil refinery

and its staff. Pay, benefits, pensions, working conditions and the number of union jobs in play are not our concern.

Labour law is clear on the rights of picketers. They can communicate their position to the public - which might involve briefly detaining vehicles and pedestrians - but they cannot obstruct access to people and property or prevent an employer from protecting or operating its business.

Just days after the dispute began, Queens Bench Justice McMurtry found that the union’s picketing “was unlawful as the apparent purpose of some of the picketing was not to disseminate information to the public, or to solicit support of the public, but to intimidate replacement workers and others from entering CCRL facilities.”

She issued an order that the union could not block access to the refinery but

could briefly delay trucks trying to enter and leave.

The Justice also noted – quite presciently (and incorrectly as it turned out) – “that, in any event, the police are responsible for enforcing breaches of the criminal law.”

A few weeks later, Q u e e n s Bench Justice Keene found seven deliberate violations by the union of the court order – during five days in December – and fined Unifor $100,000 for contempt of court.

All of this happened before Unifor set up barricades around some Co-op

gas-bars, cardlocks, even a home centre and other properties. Then, between January 20 and February 7, the u n i o n c o m pletely s h u t d o w n access to the refinery by erecting barricades of fencing, vehicles, trailers and trash, a l o n g with hundreds of Unifor John Gormley activists shipped in from around the country.

Beyond some arrests the night of the refinery barricading, the Regina Police Service publicly refused to remove the bar-

ricades, enforce either the criminal laws of mischief or Justice McMurtry’s court order, which the police chief repeatedly called “a civil matter”.

From a huge economic hit on innocent fuel truck drivers, to gas shortages and the world’s worst public relations campaign, Unifor’s 315,000 Canadian members have been no match for Western Canada’s two million co-op members. The only thing that would have upped the ante on this clown circus would have been for Unifor to go after Gainer the Gopher.

For a third time, the Court intervened when Queens Bench Justice Robertson reviewed 24 affidavits detailing over 100 separate allegations of deliberate contempt of the court’s earlier order and found that the original $100,000 fine “had no apparent effect in restoring respect for

the court’s authority”.

He levied a new contempt of court fine of $250,000 and amended the original court order to permit the refinery to remove any obstructions, with the police “authorized to assist”.

Federated Co-op and Unifor will eventually negotiate an agreement; they’ll now be assisted by the redoubtable Vince Ready as a special mediator. But the harm to this union’s image will not be remedied so fast; nor will the reputational hit to the Regina police service be so easily cured, after the RPS refused, as the old British adage goes, to be a “servant of the law”.

Other people might be proud of their flatland farms in parts of the province, but to us as young fellows, no where could be more attractive than the slopes along the river hills.

Being a young boy and never having known the thrill of exploration, Y.T. (Yours Truly) often was found wandering the deep ravine along the north slope of the river.

Of course he was far from being the first person to have ever been there, but he didn’t Kim Inglis know that! Times have

changed quite a bit since then because now part of Calvin Daniels that ravine is full of the trash that modern visitors leave!

I think one of the first things that really stirred my young beliefs in the closeness of nature and man was on a quiet summer day in the early 1930’s while exploring one of the deep ravines that drained the Pothole Swamp, I first heard the trickling of water.

Young Y.T. was really fascinated way back there where people hardly ever went. The voice of the land was talking to him . . . and he listened!

If I remember right Calvinthe Daniels I spent whole day on the sunny slopes of that ravine discovering, I thought, for the first time, small waterfall after small waterfall as that life-giving water made its way down to the river . . . and listening to what each of them had to say!

In contrast to the roaring traffic and squealing tires which are so much among the sounds of today, the memory of those calm conversations back there in that deep ravine along the north slope has stayed with me Kimlong Inglistime! for a long Years later, while riding

up across the river, we camped beside the rapids and Eagle Creek, which seemed to want to carry on that conversation and I stopped to listen to them too!

Mebbe (at least I hope so!) the sound of water coursing down slope toward the sea is one of man’s greatest attractions, although most civilizations were formed along rivers! And sometimes I’m sorry that man himself has created so many more attractions that he thinks are better!

While on the subject of slopes, a fellow had better mention the one between Perdue and Biggar!

John Gormley I’m not exactly sure what the elevation levels of the two are . . . we all know that Biggar is way higher . . . I’m talking elevation here, not society!

As a matter of fact, Y.T., who one time farmed among the peaks north of Keppel, often considered taking the odd oxygen tank along with his lunch kit!

Slopes are a real part of our lives though, and although that old saying “sufficient unto the day” might well be true, it could also be interpreted as “sufficient unto the

Skijoring might be a big thrill, but not as big as the one we feel, swooping unprofessionally down some snowy hill!

I remember that young engineer where I worked one time. We drove out to look at a ditch he had just surveyed.

“That water is supposed to be running south!” he exclaimed. “And it is running north into that lake!”

“Darn it!” I consoled him.” Whoever built this part of the country should have put that low spot over there!

Golfing on the coast one time at a course named “18 Pastures”, I John Gormley got on a fairway going down the mountainside.

It was probably the only time in my life that I knocked the ball 600 yards. Going up was different! A lot of the slopes on the Biggar course aren’t so easily read either!

As far as slopes go, I’ve been going downhill (economically) for years, and it probably won’t be that long before the physical slope sets in either!

Biggar RCMP report

by Cpl. Dereck Crozier, Biggar Detachment, NCO IC This week members responded to 35 calls for service.

This included two collisions, one traffic complaint and two suspicious activity complaints.

Also dealt with was an uttering threats complaint to an organization in town and a disturbing the peace complaint for someone who was unhappy that the Wexit party was campaigning in town. Members also went to work in locating a motorist who call 911 to say they were stuck and

lost on a grid road near Cando, the motorist was located by members and provided a ride to North Battleford.

A few other motorists were assisted in Traffic Safety Education, with 10 tickets being issued this week and one disqualified driver being removed from the road.

Members continue to check court conditions of the prolific offenders residing in our area, and one was found in violation of non-compliance, returned to custody and will appear in court in NorthBiggar Battleford Feb- Saskon Valley ruaryConstituency 18.

Asquith Council news for February Asquith Town Council held its February regular council meeting on Wednesday, February 12.

Attending were Mayor Gail Erhart, Councillors, Dylan Claypool, Jeff Eide, Ted Goodnough.

Also attending was CAO Kathy Picketts and Foreman Darren Kraft. The meeting was called to order at 7p.m.

A motion was made to accept the January 8, 2020 regular council meeting minutes as presented.

Council made a motion to accept the January 2020 financial statements and January 2020 bank reconciliations as presented to them at the meeting.

Accounts Paid in the amount of $23,836.93 and Accounts Payable of $27,074.14 were accepted as presented.

Directions: Preheat oven to 350°F. Coat an eight-cup muffin tin with cooking spray.

Heat oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add onion; cook, stirring occasionally, until translucent, about three minutes. Add mushrooms; cook, stirring frequently, until vegetables are soft and pan is mostly dry, about five minutes.

Set aside to cool.

Place turkey, chipotle, bread crumbs, milk, egg, chili powder, salt and 2 tbsp. barbecue sauce in a large mixing bowl; add onion mixture and combine thoroughly. Scoop 1/3 cup turkey mixture into each muffin cup.

In a small bowl, combine adobo sauce and remaining 3 tbsp plus 1 tsp barbecue sauce; brush evenly over tops of meat loaves. Bake until a meat thermometer inserted in centre of a meat loaf reaches 165°F, about 18 to 22 minutes.

Agriculture The obvious disconnect between consumers and farmers is much discussed in agriculture media, and that includes mentioned here on numerous occasions.

This past week I had something of an epiphany in regards to the aforementioned disconnect.

It had always been a case of simplifying the situation down to the reality more and more consumers, even those in small Canadian Prairie cities, no longer have a direct connection to the farm.

There is no grandfather, Chef Dez uncle, brother, still operating a nearby farm where urban relatives visit to see calves being born and grain harvested. Without that direct look at a farm operation a level of distrust has arisen as people often fear that which they

I well remember carrying bags of potatoes from the garden into the cellar on a frosty October evening.

Then there was helping to wrap carrots to store, shell peas, cut beans, or weed the garden patch.

You were connected to your food in a very personal way.

Similarly, there is nothing that quite connects you to your food like the aromas that come with filling the larder.

I have read that scents often fire very strong memories, and in the case of food I fully understand that.

The smell of making pickles have stuck with me for decades, although it has been at least 25-years since anyone made homemade pickles in my home.

Gold production hits a record high for 2019 Saskatchewan produced a record amount of gold in 2019.

The province’s only active gold mine, the Seabee gold operation, owned by SSR Mining Inc. (SSRM), produced 112,137 ounces.

In 2019, production from the Seabee operation increased 17 per cent compared to the previous year, which marks the fourth consecutive year the Seabee operation has set a new record for gold production in the province.

“Saskatchewan has a diverse mining sector, which is responsible for a significant amount of growth and investment in our province’s economy,” Energy and Resources Minister Bronwyn Eyre said. “Congratulations to SSR Mining Inc. on its record year of production. Our government will continue to support targeted mineral exploration development and sound policy to drive our economy and ensure that Saskatchewan remains one of the best, most competitive mining jurisdictions in the world.”

The Seabee gold operation is located in Northern Saskatchewan, about 125 kilometres northeast of La Ronge. Production occurs at the Santoy underground mine, while ore processing occurs at the Seabee mill facility nearby.

“The Seabee gold operation continues to be a tremendous success thanks to our employees, supportive communities and the provincial government,” SSR Mining Chief Executive Officer Paul Benson said. “The quality partnership with all of our stakeholders continues to show that Saskatchewan is one of the premier locations in the world to operate.”

Saskatchewan’s diverse geology and mineral deposits, along with a stable government regulatory environment and targeted mineral exploration incentives, have created an attractive location for local and international mining companies.

In 2018, the Fraser Institute ranked Saskatchewan’s mining sector third in the world and first in Canada for min-

ing investment attractiveness, out of 83 global jurisdictions. The Investment Attractiveness Index takes into account both geologic potential for minerals, as well as government mining policies. Saskatchewan also ranked second globally, tied with British Columbia, out of 99 jurisdictions in the Mining Journal’s 2019 World Risk Report.

Saskatchewan’s Growth Plan includes an objective to increase new mineral exploration over the next 10 years. A commitment to reinstate Provincial Sales Tax exemptions for exploratory downhole drilling activity in the mining sector will encourage new mining exploration and investment in to the province.

The government will also continue to support the Targeted Mineral Exploration Incentive, introduced in October 2018, which is designed to encourage and increase exploration for gold, base metals and diamonds in select regions of the province.

Mediator appointed to assist in Refinery dispute Labour Relations and Workplace Safety Minister Don Morgan has appointed Vince Ready as a special mediator to assist in the negotiations between Unifor Local 594 and the Consumer’s Co-operative Refineries Limited.

The labour action began on December 5, 2019, at the Co-op Refinery Complex after the union issued strike notice and the Co-op issued lock-out notice to workers.

“It is in the interest of both parties to negotiate a contract at the bargaining table,” Morgan said.

“The parties have had the

opportunity to negotiate an agreement and have been unsuccessful. We are appointing a special mediator to help resolve the impasse because of the impact of the dispute on Saskatchewan families, communities and businesses.”

The special mediator will begin on February 18, 2020. If the parties are unable to reach an agreement the mediator shall provide the parties and the minister with recommended terms for agreement. The parties and mediator will have 20 days to reach a settlement.

“We have had success with the appointment of a special mediator in past disputes and are hopeful that the outstanding issues between the parties can be resolved with the assistance of Mr. Ready,” Morgan said.

Ready has worked in labour relations since 1965. In 1982, he established his private arbitration/mediation practice.

Today, he is active in every province and territory in Canada and has arbitrated and or mediated more than 7,000 labour and commercial disputes in Canada.

Eggs: Part of my well-balanced diet

Like many people at the beginning of a new year, I started a new year’s resolution to eat healthier and exercise more in 2020.

Now, nearly two months in, I have pretty much cut out any alcohol, try to hit the gym at least five days per week, and have been maintaining a balanced diet.

The word “diet� has such a negative connotation to it, because automatically it translates as “restricting foods�. However, I use the word in the context of what I eat on a daily basis: my diet of food intake. It’s human nature to crave something that we cannot have, so it is so important to have an array of foods and make them taste great, especially when they are healthy.

One of the nutritious and most multipurpose foods I include in this diet regime of mine, are eggs.

Did you know that each large chicken egg has only 70 calories, six grams of protein, all nine essential amino acids, and 14 key nutrients that help maintain healthy bones, teeth, skin, and eyes?

They do.

And most of that nutrition, including half of the protein is in the yolk, so I always eat whole eggs. And because they are so versatile, you don’t have to be like Rocky Balboa by swallowing them raw in a glass before your workout.

I love them on their own: hard-boiled, soft

boiled, fried or poached and served on a bed of steamed or grilled asparagus. When preparing fried eggs, I use a nonstick pan and only about a teaspoon of healthy fat, like avocado oil. However, this is just scratching the surface of what you can do with eggs. From baked goods to omelettes, frittatas, French toast, custards, pancakes, fresh pasta, casseroles, and sauces, and the list Chef Dez goes on and on. Eggs are not just for breakfast, that is certain.

are based on the five housing types: conventional caged eggs, enriched housing, free-run, freerange, and organic. Some of these also may include some additional nutritional properties derived from a specialized diet (there’s that word again) given to the hens. Omega-3 or Omega Pro eggs have more Omega-3 than regular eggs.

The feed contains ground flax seed, fish oil, or other DHA sources, which results in the eggs having a higher Omega-3 and DHA Content. VitaminEnriched eggs have more Vitamin E, Vitamin B12, and folacin than regular eggs. These hens are fed a traditional feed that contains higher levels of certain nutrients.

Some people opt to keep their eggs at room temperature, but please keep in mind that this goes against professional food-safe guidelines and will drastically reduce their best before date.

Oh, so delicious: Flames-Oilers playoff a possibilty If an Oilers-Flames regular-season game in, say, mid-January is billed as the Battle of Alberta, what explosive description could be given to a seven-game series between two of the National Hockey League’s most bitter rivals?

There are still close to 20 games to play for every NHL team, but both the Flames and Oilers are in solid playoff position and if one of them finishes first in the Pacific Division (a very real possibility) and the other one finishes as the second wildcard team (another real possibility), or if they finish 2-3 in the Pacific Division, then the first round of the playoffs could feature this hockey war to end all wars.

Could Canadian hockey fans stomach a Matthew Tkachuk-Zack Kassian clash night after night for seven games? Would there be enough St. John Ambulance personnel to staff a seven-game series with Milan Lucic running at everything wearing an Oilers’ jersey? Maybe

they can arrange for the two starting goalies to do battle at centre ice during the pregame warmup just to get it out of the way. Would Mayor Naheed Nenshi skip the traditional goodhumoured ‘wager’ with Edmonton mayor Don Iveson and go for the throat?

Would the end-ofseries congratulatory handshake line turn into a fullscale brawl?

Would there be space in the bowels of Rogers Place and Scotiabank Saddledome for the fleet of ambulances such a series would require?

The provincial rivals haven’t met in a playoff series since 1991 - 29 years ago, back when Wayne Gretzky, by then no longer an Oiler, was only 30 years old. Only a handful of players on the current Edmonton

and Calgary rosters were even alive when that ancient series, won by the Oilers, took place.

The two teams didn’t hate each other as much as they do today and while that 1991 affair took on a higher level of interest because it was two provincial rivals competing, a recurrence in April of 2020 would Bruce Penton attract international attention.

This would be such an epic battle, more than merely advancing to the second round should be at stake. How about this? Loser has to leave Alberta and become part of Saskatchewan.
