Biggar Minor Hockey put on a two-day extravaganza, showcasing the players who play the greatest game on earth. Families lived and breathed hockey on the weekend as the Jubilee Stadium was filled with the shouts of triumph, words of encouragement, exhibitions of talent and sportsmanship.

Tired bodies ended the weekend and no one was more worn-out than the parents and Jubilee staff who made sure the weekend went smoothly. Special tip of the helmet to Michelle Craig for her work in making sure it all went to plan. The celebration continues as playoffs now take to the ice. Come down and give a cheer at the Jubilee!

A little country, a little rock, a bit of folk - all passion with Froese

Fifth show of the Biggar and District Arts Council season

An ever increasingly popular Saskatchewan artist, Ellen Froese, will hit the Majestic Theatre this February 9 with her distinctive heartfelt music.

Froese is what you’d call a “prolific artist”; committed, too.

For someone who only just passed the threshold of their mid-20s, she’s amassed a resolutely solid body of work and, with a variety of projects, achieved more than some many years her senior. For Each Flower Growing, Froese’s fourth full-length, produced in collaboration with the Sheepdogs’ Sam Corbett, is her most accomplished statement to date, drawing on her established sound as a folk and country-based singer/songwriter while incorporating a wider frame of reference in the rich production, supple instrumentation, and overall sonic soundworld.

It’s much harder to pin down than any simple description can convey, making it all the more worthwhile to check out.

The impressive scope of this rich, imaginative amalgam of an album is largely due to the expansive creative vision of Froese herself, who says the album is “based around ideas of 1970s science exploration via Carl Sagan’s series Cosmos, Arthur Russell’s drum machine folk music, finding humour in sadness, and analyzing past relationship choices”.

Some of these guiding elements can be attributed simply to the continuing growth of a serious artist, but others lie in less sunny realities.

Jill Mack, Froese’s original recording engineer and close friend, sadly passed away during the making of For Each Flower Growing, and subsequently the album became, as she puts it, “something different it is now an homage to her and will always hold memories of my time in the studio with her.”

Despite this deep sadness underpinning the album’s creation, Froese was lucky to find a wonderful creative foil in Sam Corbett, helping her move past old ideas and reimagine her conception of what “folk music” can be.

With the addition of drum machines, synths, and more intricate vocal production techniques, Froese reflects that “folk music can be anything I want it to be; I don’t have to be stuck in an antiquated mindset to

hold strong musical ties to the past.”

And the results of that mindset are stellar; For Each Flower Growing is exquisitely warm and inviting, foregrounding the singer’s lilting, ethereal vocals atop rightin-the-pocket, pillowy drumming, melodic bass lines, ripples of Hammond organ layers, and - for the headphone listener - a bevvy of expertly-placed sonic details tucked into the margins of this highly accomplished album.

The album is an easy listen, immediately inviting and begging for repeat listens. And while it sits nicely alongside contemporary songsmiths such as Angel Olsen, Laura Veirs, Jessica Pratt, and Adrienne Lenker (Big Thief), Froese’s sound moves beyond those realms, also recalling the aforementioned Arthur Russell, an iconoclastic songwriter and producer whose songs traded in similar contemplative, horizon-gazing moods, and even the more relaxed moments of Jeff Tweedy and Wilco. In other moments, Froese’s roots in the trad-folk world shine through, revealing an affinity for ‘60s British folk trailblazers such as Fairport Convention and Nick Drake, as well as under the radar gems like Judee Sill and Sybille Baier.

Sask. Employment Incentive is now open for applications The Government of Saskatchewan has officially launched the new Saskatchewan Employment Incentive (SEI). Working families with low incomes can now apply online at saskatchewan. ca/employment-incentive.

Working parents earning between $500 and $2,200 per month may be eligible for the maximum monthly SEI benefit ranging from $400 to $600, depending on the number of children they have.

“Our government is making life more affordable for Saskatchewan families,” Social Services Minister Gene Makowsky said. “The Saskatchewan Employment Incentive helps low-income families choose and maintain employment by helping them with essential costs such as transportation,

clothing and child care.”

The SEI will provide working families who have lower incomes with: A monthly financial benefit; Supplementary health benefits; Access to discount bus passes (where available); Connections to employment supports through the Ministry of Immigration and Career Training; and Access to the Saskatchewan Housing Benefit through the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation.

Report of a vehicle abandoned and blocking access in an alley, this weekend it was reported the horses were back hanging out on the centre line of Highway 4 north again. Thankfully there were no collisions to report.

Report of a skid steer on fire while being transported on a trailer on Highway 4 south, not suspicious and the owner was able to get the fire under control before the fire department arrived.

Four inductees were honoured: the Biggar Bantam Bobcats (Jim Newton, Glenn Macleod, Warren Love, George Proctor, Gordon Gray, Kelly Foster, Richard Lang, Fred Farrell, Joe Macleod, Stan Jaworski, Ed Cooper, David Robinson, Mark Edwards, Jim Suchan, Murry Beebe, Laurie Robillard, Bob Jaworski, Vic Cooper, Don McKinley, Allan McNally, Eric Ulsifer, Brad Pollock), Brittney Redlick, Courtney Rea, and Cody Danychuk now find themselves enshrined on the Jubilee’s Wall of Fame.

There was a full moon this past weekend that had a few howling at the sight as members assisted with a number of non-criminal calls for assistance. Call for an intoxicated 52-year-old that over stayed her welcome at the neighbours - the situation was diffused without further incident.

Enjoy those warmer days we are experiencing for the next week or so, but be cautious as the nights cool, as daytime melting could cause some unexpected ice at intersections and some highway surfaces.

Adults are ruining sports for kids

by Ken Reed, Sports Policy Director League of Fans I was at a sixth-grade girls’ basketball game last weekend. I saw a lot of adults yelling and screaming at both referees and 11-and-12-yearold kids.

Let’s just say a lot of what I saw and heard wasn’t positive.

Virtually every youth sports league is plagued by adults who are pathologically focused on winning. Yes, most parents and coaches keep youth sports in perspective, but it only takes a few crazy adults to ruin the sports experience for a bunch of kids.

Of course, the issue of overbearing parents and coaches in youth sports isn’t new. However, things are getting worse. For example, the number of incidents of physical violence and verbal abuse at youth sporting events has increased significantly in recent years.

According to the National Alliance for Youth Sports in the

United States, more and more youth sports events involve a confrontation between parents, between parents and officials, between parents and coaches, or between coaches and officials. The National Association of Sports Officials says the primary reason game officials give up the job is poor sportsmanship by parents.

Nearly three out of four kids quit competitive sports by the time they are 13 years old.

The reason most often cited is that it’s no longer fun. The primary reason they say it’s not fun anymore is overthe-top coaches and parents.

Today, by the time a lot of kids reach the age of 12, they’ve been involved in some type of adult-organized youth sport for six or seven years. They’ve witnessed numerous incidents of “grown-ups” yelling at players, officials and coaches. They’ve probably experienced several gruelling post-game critiques of their play

by Coach or Mom or Dad. They’ve survived many seasons of adults screaming at them to “stay in position,” “get back on defence,” and “be more aggressive.”

More and more kids some as young as eight - are now being encouraged (read: forced - in some cases) to specialize in a single sport by “well-meaning” adults.

Coaches are supposed to be like teachers. But, too often, they are like drill sergeants. For some reason, our culture glorifies jerks like Bobby Knight and Vince Lombardi. As such, we have parent coaches all over our youth sports system berating kids in the mode of General Patton. As a whole, our society believes good coaches have to “kick some tail” in order to be successful.

What total nonsense!

Kids shouldn’t have to endure boot camp to play the sport they love.

For too many kids, what began as fun is now a pressure-filled exercise.

There’s nothing inher-

ently wrong with adultorganized youth sports.

They can be the source of wonderful, healthy and happy experiences for children - if adults can balance their desire to win with the holistic development of kids and having fun. Striving to win isn’t the problem; the win-at-all-costs mentality - and the actions it spawns - is the problem.

Winning, in the best sense, isn’t just about wins and losses. Nor

When it comes to youth sports, let’s all relax, and let our kids relax, so they can get back to having fun.

Nominations so far suggest status quo election

Judging by how the Saskatchewan Party and NDP have so far rolled out their nominations, the parties seem rather content with the status quo.

Of course, each will say they expect massive gains in the Oct. 28 vote.

But more telling is where each already have candidates in place, nine months before the vote.

This is telling is both expect to re-elect most of their incumbents, with the Sask. Party perhaps conceding a few

city seats to the NDP. Let us examine: The Sask. Party has nominated 34 out of 61 candidates - mostly incumbents and mostly in safe rural seats.

Among the sitting rural members already nominated or acclaimed are: Jeremy Harrison (Meadow Lake), Lori Carr (Estevan), David Marit (Wood River), Steven Bonk (MoosominMontmartre), Jeremy Cockrill (The Battlefords), Hugh Nerlein (Kelvington-Wadena), Everett Hindley (Swift Current), Todd Goudy (Melfort), Warren Kaeding (Melville-Saltcoats), Doug Steele (Cypress Hills), Daryl Harrison (Cannington) and Travis Keisig (Last MountainTouchwood), Jim Reiter (Rosetown-Delisle), Blaine McLeod (Lumsden-Morse) and Jim Lemaigre in the (who may have a tough test time in a long-held NDP Athabasca seat). Terri Bromm was acclaimed

in Carrot River Valley to replace the retiring Fred Bradshaw.

So far in the cities, the Sask. Party nominees include: Lisa Lambert (Saskatoon ChurchillWildwood), Muhammed Fiaz, (Regina Pasqua), David Buckingham (Westview), Bronwyn Eyre (Stonebridge), Gord Wyant (Saskatoon Chief Mistawasis), Ken Cheveldayoff (Willowgrove), Gene Makowsky (Regina University), Alana Ross (Prince Albert Northcote), Christine Tell (Wascana Plains), Tim McLeod (Moose Jaw North), Paul Merriman (Saskatoon Silverspring), Joe Hargrave (Prince Albert Carlton),) and Marv Friesen (Riversdale).

The NDP have its eyes on Makowsky’s University seat. Lambert, Fiaz, Friesen and the Prince Albert, Moose Jaw candidates may be in trouble. In fact, most everywhere in Regina and Saskatoon could be a

fight for the Sask. Party given the NDP are polling over 60 per cent in those cities.

Yet the Sask. Party doesn’t yet have candidates in ridings help by north Regina NDP incumbents Laura Ross, Gary Grewal or in the two in held six months ago before losing the summer byelection seats.

The Sask. Party has some new rural Sask.

Party candidates in place, but these nominations seem to have more driven by internal party politics and territorial disputes than gaining or preserving political ground.

Eric Schmalz was acclaimed in Saskatchewan Rivers because the Sask. Party is desperate to knock off Nadine Wilson, who was removed from caucus and then joined the Sask. United Party.

Warman in a contested nomination against local councillor Shaun Cripps.

However, incumbent Canora-Pelly MLA Terry Dennis lost to Sean Wilson in a similarly contested race.

In perhaps an even bigger surprise, longserving Speaker Randy Weekes lost in the seat in the new KindersleyBiggar to local a school board trustee and local Macklin administrator Kim Gartner. Many are suspicious this was orchestrated by caucus after Weekes fell out of favour.

Also political intriguing, party president James Thorsteinson was going to challenge Lloydminster incumbent MLA Colleen Young’s seat. However, after Cut Knife-Turtleford MLA Ryan Domotor was booted out of caucus after being charged with procuring sexual services, he was also stripped of his nomination. Thorsteinson has

now declared he will run in that seat.

Conversely, only have six of the 31 NDP nominated candidates are “rural” NDP candidates including: Tom Kroczynski (The Battlefords), Brenda Edel (RosetownDelisle), Michael Woollard (Canora-Pelly), Lorne Schroeder (Kelvington-Wadena), Thera Nordal (Last MountainTouchwood) and Lenore Pinder (Yorkton).

Twelve urban incumbents are nominated: Betty Nippi-Albright, Matt Love, Erika Ritchie, Nathaniel Teed, Vicki Mowat (in Saskatoon) and Trent Wotherspoon, Nicole Sarauer, Meara Conway, Jared Clarke, Noor Burki, leader Carla Beck and Alenna Young (in Regina) There are another 13 new candidates, but these are all in city and northern seats the NDP deem winnable.

This all seems to suggest the parties are comfortable where they are.

Often a fellow is apt to hear, “Oh, he was in the army one time!”

And this all-encompassing statement is supposed to make up for a few blank missing years out of his life - no mention of the many alluring promises (mostly unkempt) that got him to join up in the first place.

“Join the Army and see the world!” ... Well, we did get a worms-eye view of Europe!

Or, “Help the USSR, USA ... and US!” Now and then the theatres showed some of the local lovelies in smartly tailored outfits, standing shoulder to shoulder alongside their men. Sorry! Most of the female types Y.T. (Yours Truly) ever saw when he was in the Forces were frowning at his wisecracks from the far end of some needle that they wanted to jab him with!

As far as the baby-killing, mother-murdering enemy (Hello, Hans!

How you doing!) he didn’t have much more of an idea what it was all about than Y.T. did!

Dear Money Lady Readers, There are three major ways that Canadians invest in the market: fixed income investing, guided stock portfolios (which would include ETFs, MFs, bonds and various securities) or through insurance products like annuities or segregated funds. Then there are other ways to invest - like buying real estate, cryptocurrency, commodities, and leverage lending.

A veteran wrote one time: When was it? Where?

And why?

The time was the fifth of May. The place was a German road.

And why? Well, you have me there!

Perhaps there are men somewhere, Who can tell you the reason why?

Not just those few moments but the whole thing was one long unforgettable experience.

Aside from the crueller parts, there were a lot of lighter moments that are never quite covered by that “Oh, he was in the army one time!” bit, and this kind of bothers me.

Far from blank, missing years, we kept on living our lives, of course, some guys for better and sometimes for worse.

And of course the cruellest reports of all were those of the ones who didn’t make it home!

These guys aren’t going to send any of their stuff into The Independent.

And sometimes I wonder if maybe some of these can adequately take their place!

Y.T. wasn’t in the Forces near as long as some fellows were, and maybe he missed an awful lot but here are some of the entries in his old L and T ... Life and Times!

“The Y in the road” (this was in Germany somewhere) It was fairly dark out one night when we were moving up. Y.T. had to gather up some stuff before he scurried along to catch up to the company as it moved ahead.

“Oh,” the Major had said. “Just ahead there is a ‘Y’ in the road and we’re going to go along the ditches of the righthand fork.”

A couple of minutes later I hustled up to the Y and listened for the sound of feet. Nothing ... only a German Schmeisser submachine gun burst from away off somewhere.

Y.T. stole along the right-hand fork for a ways and stopped and listened again ... Nothing!

Kind of panicky, he rushed back to the Y and started down the left-hand fork. A hundred yards or so down the ditch were a whole bunch of crouching forms.

Y.T. hustled past and caught up with the Major.

“You said you were going down the righthand road,” I accused.

“How come you came here?”

“We changed our mind,” he replied.

Sometimes I wonder how come we won the war!

Twist (also in Germany) Wilf Day and Y.T. had been on leave in Brussels, and a Service Corps truck had finally picked us up and was delivering us back to our regiment.

I think the driver was a bit confused because he got lost a couple of times, but finally we started down a road.

From the back of the canvas covered truck we saw a couple of armoured cars stopped beside the road and knew that we

must be near where the Canadian Army was.

They waved at us - at least we thought they did - so we waved back as we rumbled by.

One of our boys was peeking through a hole ripped in the canvas truck cover.

“There’s a whole bunch of grey uniformed guys rushing around just up ahead!” he told us. “They look like Germans!”

I don’t know how he did it but our driver cut a u-turn right there and we hustled back. We went past the armoured cars again where some black beret fellows seemed to think it was funny that a Service Corps truck full of holidayers should drive into a German town that hadn’t been captured yet!

Today we’re just going to cover the basics to get you started and give you some ideas so that you can discuss them with your advisor.

Let’s start with fixed income investing which is often overlooked because it isn’t as exciting as buying and selling stocks.

It’s primarily a rulesbased philosophy that takes all emotion out of the equation. You simply follow the rules and get a solid return.

Laddering is the most common method and today there’s $11 trillion invested this way in Canada alone. When you look at the markets from a long-term perspective, fixed income portfolios win every time. They’re not as glamorous as picking stock, however, because of their stability and security, almost all large corporate and gov-

ernment pension funds are done through this method.

One thing you must remember with fixed income products is that they consist mostly of different types of bonds and buying them is like buying real estate. That means, you can’t turn around and sell them immediately after the purchase like you can with stock.

The way it works is, you buy them at a discount, and then they mature at par. Meaning on the maturity date you know exactly what you’re going to get.

Most people who invest in real estate and want a tangible asset, choose to diversify their investments in institutional bonds because of the similarities. At the retail bank level, you could also consider structured notes as an alternative

fixed income strategy.

Guided stock portfolios are the other great method for Canadians to invest. But we seem to have a large expertise gap with some advisors, and most are pushing clients into mutual funds and managed accounts.

Now, is that a bad thing? Maybe not.

Today there are over 135,000 mutual funds to choose from worldwide with over $1.7 trillion invested in Canada. So, let’s talk about mutual funds since they seem to be the product of choice.

A mutual fund, (MF) is just that - a fund of different types of products such as stocks, bonds, and money markets.

When you invest in a MF you invest money into the fund with everyone else, and by doing so, your contribution is measured in units. You

The pretty young lady (probably in the “business”) came over and sat at our table.

We were just about to say something to her when the door opened again and in came a couple of soldiers.

Ignoring us entirely, she jumped up and yelled: “@#*$ Mac! You old $@$! Come on @$# in and sit $%#&^%$

down!”

It wasn’t the kind of language that one uses when in conversation with the local minister but I imagine, after someone’s coaching, they were the only English words she knew!

It wasn’t too long ago that Y.T. wondered what in the world he’d write of next, but on looking through the old L and T book, he found a lot of stuff and is going to try and make some sense out of that oh-so-senseless time when he was “In the Army”!

MFs are a great way for any investor to take advantage of buying into a fund, managed by a professional with good diversification. That’s because a typical fund could have a portfolio of 60 to 100 different securities, across 15 to 20 different industries. The average investor can’t be expected to hold a stock portfolio of that size. It’s just not possible. No one has the time, knowledge, or expertise to do so.

Wetlands an important piece in the ag picture

by Calvin Daniels In the past I have written about the importance of wetlands although I also acknowledge that farmers probably should not be expected to carry the cost of preserving such areas.

While it might not seem like it - wetlands, and it’s the same for areas of bush, have a cost to maintain - they are after all natural areas and Mother Nature does her thing and the areas survive nicely.

But the farmers hold deed to such areas, and with some work, they could be growing wheat or canola.

Even if the land is not ideal for crop production when canola is floating near the $20 a bushel mark farmers see a reason to drain sloughs and cut down bush.

There is also the matter of pure convenience.

As machinery has gotten ever larger, manoeuvring around natural areas can be an issue, especially when staff with more limited hours in the tractor seat are at the helm. A quarter section clear corner-to-corner is just easier to manage.

And one might even suggest that when a slough goes, so to do the ducks and geese stopping in and eating crop.

So for a farmer there is a pull to eliminate natural areas.

But, there are notable reasons to keep them too, as the Provincial Association of Resort Communities of Saskatchewan has pointed out in a series of recent Facebook posts.

For example, the first post noted wetlands are

home to a wonderful and interesting diversity of species.

“In the spring, wetlands are brimming with waterfowl, blackbirds and shorebirds as they nest and raise their young in the safety of reeds, grasses and stones. Not only is it a sanctuary for migratory and year-round birds, there are also fish species, frogs, turtles, muskrats, minks and beavers that are long-term residents. With deer mice and ground squirrels living in the grasses adjacent to wetlands and fish swimming in open water, this ecosystem is a favourite of osprey, eagles and hawks. But, let’s not forget about the itty bitty creatures that wiggle in wetland waters. Aquatic invertebrates, such as dragonfly nymphs and snails form the base of the wetland food chain and are equally as fascinating as other wetland life.”

That is interesting, and one can appreciate wild

species are valued by many and worth helping to thrive.

But, should that responsibility be on the individual farmer?

It would seem there is a role for the public to play here.

It might be in tax breaks at the municipal level, or annual ‘natural habitat preservation grants’ from senior government or even organizations such as Ducks Unlimited. The source of funding is less important than the fact such support would help farmers maintain natural habitat and still generating some income from their land.

And, it’s not like the public wouldn’t benefit from the investment either.

As the posts pointed out “wetlands are the kidneys of the planet!” as they “have the ability to remove pollutants from water, thanks to their luscious vegetation. Cattails, for example, aren’t just good for entertainment with seedy fluff that explodes in the wind. These iconic wetland plants are able to capture excess phosphorus and nitrogen, thereby preventing harmful algal blooms.”

In addition, wetlands are masters at carbon sequestration.

“This process sucks in carbon and stores it in wetland soil. Unlike when a sibling hogs all the crayons, we are happy that wetlands hog carbons because it helps to regulate the climate.

But, not all wetlands are equally skilled at holding onto carbon. Peatlands, including fens and bogs, collect ‘peat’ or partially decomposed plants and other organic matter (aka a whack

ton of carbon). When peatlands are drained for agriculture, forestry or peat harvesting, carbon and nitrogen are released as greenhouse gases in the form of carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide. Approximately 25 per cent of the world’s peatland are in Canada alone, with the Hudson Bay Lowlands as one of the worlds largest peatland systems.”

So wetlands are important, which means collectively we need to assure they are maintained.

Biggar Jr Blazers top Wilkie tourney ... The Biggar Junior Girls Blazers co-hosted an eight-team tournament in Wilkie this past Friday and Saturday.

With some games played in Biggar on Friday, the Blazers played Rosetown, winning 53-26 moving them into the A side. The original name of the community was named Stanhope after the post office in 1905. This was before the railway came through the area in 1912.

However the railway decided to build the rail some distance south of the original post office.

The post office moved to the railway location in which the community was developed.

The first postmaster was Fred Brooks and he renamed the community after his hometown in South Dakota, Sturgis.

The population of the town today is around 650 people and is nestled between the north and south hills, sitting alongside the Assiniboine River, greatly adding to the recreational activity in the summer time with fishing and campsites in the Sturgis Regional Park.

Mainly an agriculture town, Sturgis has maintained a strong economy from tourism over the years.

Next up we hang a left on Highway 49 travelling a short distance before taking a left on Highway 662 to the community of Stenen.

First homesteaded around 1902, Stenen was incorporated as a village in 1912.

The population today is around 90 people, and the name Stenen coming from the Stenen family that came from North Dakota to homestead in the area in the early 1900’s.

When the railroad came through in 1911 the Stenen family donated the land, where the current village sits, with the condition that the community would bear the Stenen family name.

The reason we travelled to this community was that we heard about a bar and grill in this little community. The name of this establishment is called “Rawhides”.

PERDUE MINOR HOCKEY The rink in Perdue was alive with hockey…On Saturday January 27 was Perdue Minor Hockey Day. The day started at 10:30 in the morning with the U7 teams of Perdue hosting the Delisle Bruins, with Delisle coming out on top. Next up at noon was the U9 teams of Perdue hosting the Rosetown Prairie Redwings. The U11 Pirates hosted the U11 Team from Biggar at 2pm, while the U15 teams from Delisle and Clavet played fast spirited game at 4pm. The senior Pirates capped off the day with a tilt against the Redberry Raiders in the evening. Sask West This Week

by Phil Heilman The 13th and final week of the Sask West Hockey League (SWHL) had a full slate with far too many possibilities for playoffs.

After the dust settled, the Wilkie Outlaws take first place with an 18-0 record. The Kindersley Sr Klippers and the Hafford Hawks were tied at 10-8, but by virtue of the Klippers winning the season series 2-1, they take second and Hafford third, while Edam 3 Stars finished fourth at 9-8-1. The Macklin Mohawks (8-8-2) and the Biggar Nationals (7-9-2) finished fifth and sixth respectively, and the Unity Miners finished seventh with a 1-16-1 record.

The Kindersley Sr Klippers hosted the Biggar Nationals, Saturday, with huge playoff implications on the line. It was the Klippers winning 5-2.

Shayne Neigum would open the scoring at the 10:48 mark, giving Kindersley the 1-0 lead.

That lead held all the way into the late stages of the 2nd when Brett Novak would fire his 10th of the year past the goaltender.

Early in the final frame, Keaton Haynes would score on the power-play to give the Nats the big 2-1 lead. Lane Gilliss tied the game up again at 2 on the power-play, and he added his second of the night just two minutes later to give his team the 3-2 lead late.

Kyle Donaldson would extend that lead to 4-2 on the power play, and Dylan Georget would tie a bow on the victory with an empty net goal.

Brett Matlock stopped 40 of 44 shots in the loss, while Cody Beswitherick stopped 27 of 29 shots in the win.

On Friday night, the league leading Wilkie Outlaws entered the Jubilee Stadium in Biggar to play the Nationals and left with a 6-3 victory.

Chris Henry opened the scoring at the 17:05 mark, but it was quickly countered by Ryne

Keller at the 13:19 mark of the period. Later, Brock Harrison, Derek Keller and Mike Sittler would all score in a fiveminute span to give the away team the 4-1 lead after 20 minutes.

The formula repeated

in the second period as Henry would post his second of the night, followed by Taylor Bucsis to cut the lead to 4-3. Brett Boehm and Harrison would respond after that to extend the lead to 6-3 after

40 minutes. The final frame was full of fastpaced action but no goal scoring.

Jared Herle took the win, stopping 34 of 37 shots, while workhorse Brett Matlock stopped 41 of 47 shots in the loss.

The Wilkie Outlaws become the first team in SWHL history to go undefeated in the regular season, an amazing accomplishment considering that the league started in the year 2000.

A new star shines on the PGA Tour

Twenty-year-old Nick Dunlap has joined the youth brigade that has guaranteed the PGA Tour will continue to be the only golf tour that really matters.

Of late, youngsters like Colin Morikawa (26), Victor Hovland (26) Sahith Theegala (26), Cameron Young (26), Ludvig Aberg (24), Akshay Bhatia (21) and Tom Kim (21) have begun to dominate on the PGA Tour and now it appears as if Dunlap may be better than them all.

Dunlap did something in late January that no one has done in 33 years - win on the PGA Tour while still an amateur. The last one to accomplish that was Phil Mickelson at the 1991 Tucson Open.

The reigning U.S. Amateur champion, Dunlap is the only golfer to have won the U.S. Junior, the U.S. Amateur and a PGA Tour event at age 20 or younger. Tiger Woods, also a Junior and Amateur champ, was 21 when he won his first Tour event.

Dunlap, a sophomore at the University of Alabama, shot round of 64-65-60 to take a threeshot lead into the final round of the American Express in Palm Springs, and the golf world waited for him to shoot a mid- to high-70s round over the final 18 holes and finish tied for 32nd or so.

It didn’t happen.

Joseph Lasagna, writing on The Fried Egg website, said “When a player doesn’t belong

in the final group of a golf tournament, they tend to unravel. Once the unravelling begins, the wheels seldom get back on the track. That’s what happens when a player doesn’t have the game to withstand the pressure of a final group on the precipice of a life-changing accomplishment.”

Dunlap did experience an unravelling.

It happened on the seventh hole of the Stadium Course at LaQuinta, where he made a double bogey to lose his lead to a hard-charging Sam Burns. But he played the final 11 holes in three under par and when his chasers unravelled a bit themselves, he needed a seven-foot putt on the 18th hole to win.

He made no mistake. A golfer who once shot a 59 at age 12, and owns a 30-2 match play record in major amateur events eschewed a $1.5 million payday, which instead went to runner-up Christian Bezuidenhout.

The victory locked up a Tour card until the end of 2026, so Dunlap announced three days later he was turning professional.

Not yet enticed by bigmoney contract offers from LIV, the young stars on the PGA Tour make the established tour the place to play for those wishing to establish a legacy of brilliance.

Michael Wolf, on Twitter, had this to say: “Stories like Nick Dunlap can’t happen in 48-person fields where all of the spots are reserved for 40-year-olds who signed guaranteed long term contracts before the year started.”

The win moved Dunlap from a world ranking of 4,129th to 68th, with the ascent likely to continue.

He’s obviously golf’s next big thing.

OBITUARIES

GLADYS MARSHALL JULY 5, 1939 - January 22, 2024 Gladys Marshall, of Calgary, AB, passed away on Monday, January 22, 2024, at the age of 84 years.

Gladys was born July 5, 1939, in Foam Lake, SK, and grew up on a farm nearby, without electricity or even a bedroom until high school.

She gained her teaching diploma while just nineteen years old, and after moving through small towns, she found a placement in Humboldt in 1962. Here she not only made lifelong friends, but also met George, who she married on August 23, 1966. They settled in Biggar, SK, where in addition to teaching, she was an active Kinette and Kayette member.

Later she would serve on boards and committees for other local community groups, from the United Church to Al-anon, and even the swim club. She was a fixture not only at the curling club, but all over town on her daily four-mile walks. She retired in 1989 and for the next 16 years, Gladys and George travelled extensively around North America in their RV, spending most winters in Mesa, AZ. They enjoyed making many close friends during these travels, and Gladys could often be found in the pool with her water exercise club, singing in the choir, or hiking in the area. Notably, she did two “same day” hikes down the Grand Canyon in these times. She and George were avid square dancers and enjoyed meetups with other RV’ers at gatherings around the country.

In 2005, George and Gladys moved to Calgary to be closer to their son and his family. Here she built a new community through exercise, cards, church, and other groups. She took great interest in her granddaughters and their activities, attending all their acting and violin performances. Later on, and especially through her last years, she enjoyed their company

as young adults. Through the lockdowns, she was able to tell her stories to them, and listened to them describe their studies and plans.

Her family was a central part of her life, and she remained close to her brother, in-laws, and their families throughout her life. She will be remembered with affection by many for her gentle, unassuming nature and generosity of spirit.

Gladys is survived by her son and daughterin-law Bruce and Alexandra, her granddaughters, Lauren and Natalie; as well as sister-in-law Vivian Walden. She was predeceased by husband George, her brother Carl, and sister Alma.

A Celebration of Gladys’ Life was held at St. Thomas United Church (100 Hawkwood Boulevard N.W., Calgary, AB) on Sunday, January 28, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. Gladys’ service was streamed live at https://youtube.com/live/WAH3zZcm-Os. Levina was an avid member of the United Church in Biggar and many other various clubs. She was a loved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and aunt. Her absence will be felt deeply, and she will be greatly missed.
