In two concerts, the kids and staff put on a wonderful performance, “A Christmas Yarn” - a tale of ugly sweaters, the company and people who make them such a desirable item, overcoming obstacles, and the beautiful good news of Christmas. A delightful twist on Charles Dickens’ Christmas Carol, St. Gabriel always delivers the true message of the season!

Family Centre benefits from Community Grant Program

Biggar and District Family Centre has received $25,000 for Family Programs from the Community Initiatives Fund (CIF). The fund has approved 150 grants totalling $2,495,454 through its latest grant application intake, that will benefit an estimated 90,000 participants and contribute to the well-being of 58 communities. “By connecting individuals, families and communities with vital programming across the province, the Community Initiatives Fund enhances the quality of life for people in Saskatchewan,” Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Laura Ross said. “Our government is proud to support the Community Initiatives Fund. These grants strengthen important community programs, and we look forward to continuing this important relationship.” With the support of CIF’s Community Grant Program, Saskatchewan communities benefit by having access to local

projects that encourage community well-being, inclusion, leadership and vitality. These projects provide opportunities for children and youth to gain the knowledge, skills and supports to develop positive mental health, self-esteem and healthy lifestyle behaviours, and ensure families have access to support and resources to create healthy and caring environments. “The programs and initiatives funded by CIF have a profound impact on the well-being of communities across Saskatchewan,” Community Initiatives Fund Executive Director Tracey Mann said. “We are continually amazed by the dedication and creativity of community leaders and organizations that work so tirelessly to enrich our province.” CIF is a Special Purpose Fund created though The Lotteries and Gaming Saskatchewan Corporation Act and managed by a government appointed Board of community volunteers.

Vaadeland is a selftaught multi-instrumentalist and songwriter from Saskatchewan. His traditional sound and unique style could be defined as a blend of Bluegrass and 50’s

Rockabilly, with Jake also specializing on guitar and banjo in addition to his impressive vocals. Vaadeland strives to write and play with a focus on storytelling and messages that he hopes his audience can relate to, all packaged in foot stomping, high energy performances with The Sturgeon River Boys. 2022 proved to be a remarkable year for Jake Vaadeland, as he received two Saskatch-

dedicated team members here in Saskatchewan; when given the opportunity to expand on that strong base with skilled tradespeople from outside the province it makes a world of difference.” Immigration officials from the Ministry of Immigration and Career Training held 10 information sessions about the Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program (SINP) and living in Saskatchewan, that attracted over 500 people. Throughout the four-day event, immigration officials conducted 314 immigration interviews with SINP and Expression of Interest (EOI) applicants. Attendees also had the opportunity to interview for employment positions from 26 different Saskatchewan employers who were present at the event, representing various sectors, including agriculture, community services, manufacturing and construction trades. In addition to the hiring event, engagements in Manila reinforced Saskatchewan’s robust

economic ties with the Philippines. Productive discussions with leaders of major Filipino businesses, including AboitizPower, Metro Pacific Investments, and La Filipina Uy Gongco, highlighted shared interests in food and energy security. In Singapore, engagements showcased the province’s innovative and attractive investment climate. Discussions with established investors, including BHP, Agrocorp International, and Adroit Overseas, as well as key corporate and financial players, affirmed Saskatchewan’s significant contributions to the global mining, agri-food and energy sectors. The delegation also met with innovation leaders, including IPI Singapore and Nurasa, to highlight Saskatchewan’s edge in agri-food technology. These interactions opened avenues for advanced partnerships that align with the province’s focus on agricultural innovation and sustainability.

Saskatchewan employers surpass hiring targets in Philippines Saskatchewan’s mission to the Philippines and Singapore has concluded with outcomes that exceed expectations. The Travails of Trudeau is nearing its final act

Those of you who celebrate have trimmed the tree, put the wreath on the door, set up the lights, purchased food for family and guests, and are finishing (or nearly finished) wrapping presents. Among a million other things that need to be done. Our house looks quite festive. I hope your home does, too! Taking in a performance of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker during the Christmas holidays is another treat. The two-act ballet, an adaptation of E.T.A. Hoffmann’s short story, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King (1816), follows the magical journey of Clara and Fritz Stahlbaum on Christmas Eve in Nuremberg, Germany. They meet and dance with a variety of toys, animals and magical beings like the Nutcracker Prince, tin soldiers, snowflakes, Mouse King and Sugar Plum Fairy. Tchaikovsky’s score has stood the test of time. The Nutcracker Suite, which was performed nine months before the ballet opened, has become one of the most instantaneously recognizable pieces of classical music. Walt Disney’s Fantasia (1940) includes several selections from the Russian composer’s 20-minute masterpiece, too. It may surprise you to know that Canada has witnessed a classical ballet performance over the past eight years. Well, sort of.

It’s been more of a clumsy two-step at times, with a lot of stumbling and falling in between. It’s certainly been a performance, if nothing else. What’s the title? There doesn’t appear to be one. It’s still a work in progress. The party caucus ... err, ballet company may be mulling over ideas and the like. As it happens, I’ve come up with a possible title The Travails of Trudeau. Fits the bill rather well, all things considered! This performance is based on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s ineffective and mediocre leadership. His political career has been dangling by the barest of threads for years. He’s been involved in a litany of controversies and embarrassments that have been magically transformed into song and dance. It’s part tragedy, part comedy - and fully annoying. The first act deals with Trudeau’s small number of highs and truckload of lows being magically transformed into life. He confronts the Blackface Monster, whom he has seen three times before, no matter how he tried to hide from it. Tin soldiers march him to the imaginary dungeon where he faced two ethics violations - and his Liberal government faced five in total. He memorably surfs in Tofino with the Mouse King and gingerbread men, with members of the Indigenous Community looking on in frustration. He attempts to use his liberal feminist

charms to woo female MPs and cabinet ministers, only for Jody Wilson-Raybould, Jane Philpott, Celina Caesar-Chavannes and others to dance away from him in displeasure. There’s even a dance sequence at the Trudeau Home, much like The Nutcracker’s Stahlbaum Home, with his wife, Sophie. It’s a dramatic moment, as you might imagine. Alas, they separate after the final musical note has been played - and remain separated for the rest of the performance. Just like in real life. The second act of the Travails of Trudeau isn’t quite the same as Tchaikovsky’s vision of The Land of Sweets. The Nutcracker Prince doesn’t dance with Clara. The Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier are nowhere to be seen. A reindeer-drawn sleigh doesn’t appear in the distance, unless a late arrangement has been made with Santa Claus that’s not currently listed in the playbill. No, this is more like the Land of Confusion. Complete with Britain’s Spitting Image puppets and the music of Phil Collins and Genesis in the background. Chinese President Xi Jinping wants a second G20 dance with Trudeau, but the latter waltzes off the stage with the Election Interference Queen. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is clearly furious at his Canadian counterpart and will be even angrier if he picks out another costume from the Tickle Trunk that appears out of nowhere. U.S. President Joe Biden

Party government, a gift of gratitude for the province’s achieving the largest population numbers and most working people ever. Given the history of those numbers going up and down, we should not take these numbers for granted. Further thanks to Crown Investment Corporation Minister Dustin Duncan and Justin Minister Bronwyn Eyre for standing up for the province on not collecting the carbon tax on home heating on natural gas and electricity and other matters in which the federal government has not addressed Saskatchewan concerns. In Duncan’s case, he did so at risk of finding himself in carbon tax jail. Yes, there’s always politics involved in these provincial-federal debates, but what shouldn’t be loss is

the sincere concern for the well-being of the people that live in this province. In that regard, let us hope that Carla Beck and her NDP Opposition caucus find something under their trees. Despite having little or no hope of gaining rural seats in the 2024 election, Beck logged endless kilometres on Saskatchewan’s bumpy and broken roads to bring attention to the issues like doctor and nursing shortages and closures of emergency, x-ray and lab tech services. It provided a voice to people sincerely frustrated with the Sask. Party government and unable to send a message through their local government MLA. Similar credit goes to Beck’s effective critics like Vicki Mowat in health, Matt Love in edu-

and former President Donald Trump don’t care for one another, but they’re both tired of the Canadian PM’s antics. They combine efforts to dance him off into the background with the German folk tune Tchaikovsky used in his ballet: the Grossvatertanz (Grandfather Dance). Then, out of nowhere, comes Trudeau’s left-wing political saviour, NDP leader Jagmeet Singh. They’re currently engaged in a years-long dance routine called the Socialist Swing, complete with drunken sailors throwing tax dollars into the audience. There are some wild gyrations with respect to policy proposals on napkins. Regular singing from the same songbook. Plenty of warnings to the PM that he must follow the agreedupon rules - or else. Is this the final act of The Travails of Trudeau? My sense is there could be one show-stopping scene still

I went to the annual Christmas service on the eve of Christmas. Beautiful service, there was the sound of the joyous season and the Christmas message for all of us to be respectful to each other. There was mention of dark times on the horizon, with wars and conflict going on around the world and the senseless killing of the innocent. We live here in one of the best places in Canada, we don’t have bombs bursting over our heads and well who can complain about the recent weather, sure makes winter that much shorter. We have lots to be thankful this Christmas season , we have a great town to live in with many services, family and friends. There is a sense that next year will be better than the last. I am looking for a great year in 2024, and my wish to my fellow Biggarites and all those who in the surrounding R.M.’s, is to have a very Merry Christmas and may 2024 be prosperous, full of cheerful events and better health. some credit for sticking to her guns in what proved to be surprisingly bad deficit year in 2023-24 after predicting a billion-dollar surplus in March. Obviously the recently announced $250-million deficit is not good news, but it would have been worst had Harpauer not made the popular choice of cutting taxes. By the same token, Agriculture Minister David Marit deserves something for advocating hard for the strength and support of Saskatchewan crop insurance - one of the causes of the deficit. Speaking of unpopular choices, it was a tough year for former minister Paul Merriman and current Heal Minister Everett Hindley and Associate Health Minister Tim McLeod. All took more than their fair share

of heat for emergency room overcrowding and closures, poor ambulance service and a lack of available services in general. But credit Merriman for his doctor and nurse recruiting efforts and credit Hindley for addressing the backlogs in mammograms and MRIs. Similarly, credit Social Services Minister Gene Makowsky for handing tough files with class and dignity. Finally, let’s get something for those who will soon be leaving us: Don Morgan, Fred Bradshaw, Delbert Kirsch, Dana Skoropad, Warren Kaeding, Doyle Vermette, Jennifer Bowes, Ken Francis, Greg Lawrence and especially Randy Weekes and Terry Dennis who lost nomination fights. Often I blame myself for not having done some things that I know should have been darn well done. And writing this piece is one of them! As our “affluent” society adds to its all-consuming scientific education, it is apt to overlook (maybe “forget” would be a better word!) that we didn’t arrive at this technical time without a lot of very crude carryings-on. War was one of them! Being kind of old, a lot of modern procedures are really mystifying to me. But I do know that when one wants to get the low-down on taxes, management and stuff, they often seek the advice of an accountant. In a way - although I only have the letters “Pte.” after my name - this kind of qualifies

unqualified me to give out with a qualified opinion on how miserable and senseless the realities of war really are! Younger types who read this far will probably laugh when Y.T. (Yours Truly) tries to explain that he doesn’t know a byte from a ROM. He does know a little about this other stuff ... old fashioned stuff called war! I can almost hear them poopooing it all... “Oh that! No one would be foolish enough to start a war in this enlightened age.” [Editors Note: Bob or Y.T. as he is affectionately called, wrote this piece in October of 2001. And here we are ... war in the Ukraine, war in the Gaza ...] Sorry! That sentiment was one that a whole generation of intelligent juniors expressed in the 1920s and 1930s! Tens of thousands of young Canadians died in the First World War, and a grieving world, including millions of young people, in all earnestness, declared that the disasters of 1914-1918 would be called, “The war to end all wars!” No matter what these young people thought, along came 1939 and the Second World War! Are things so different now? I know that it sounds

almost fantastically impossible when I mention things like this. And that is exactly the same attitude the ordinary young person had in the 20’s and 30’s! The old fellow writing this little bit will surely never forget some of the carryings-on of WWII, and yet, because it was so long ago, many of our younger folks have no idea what it was really like. Maybe that is how come I’m writing this! Look around and consider the often trifling things that we grumble about day by day, and ask yourself as though you were the only one who could reply, “Am I willing to trade all this for such an uncertain future?” The world has been down that road, and try as they might, many a man who returned from war can’t erase from memory the images of the young people of Europe who stared in disbelief at the devastation of it all. Devastation brought on by a generation - much like the upcoming one - that had once naively thought, “So that things like war will never happen again!” There are “Hawks” and there are “Doves,” and regardless of any reputation Yours Truly may have had in the past, he

There’s a contest on CBC Radio to find the brightest song for the darkest of days. To be completely honest I understand how the dark can feel foreboding, but I know the authors of the contest can’t be from the Prairies. Here, we go hard in the brightest months. We do a year’s worth of work in a short season. We need to sleep, rest and renew. Informed by every tree, every blade of grass in rest and hibernation gathering strength for the spring, we too need to pause in our busyness, reflect on our lives to ready ourselves for the returning light. It’s a time to count our blessings. Without our usual covering of snow, the RM work crew, using the Cat

Palo Bridge is complete, under the budget planned for it, and thanks to Trent Silvernagle, will hopefully be travelled for another hundred years. Because of these dry years, we have been able to straighten and open old road allowances. In the spring we will continue pulling in the shoulders with the gravel reclaimer purchased last year. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Marty Isinger, for his many years of dedicated service to this community. Born and raised in Wakaw, Marty arrived in Biggar in 1976 after working for a year in Watrous. He married local girl; Cheryl Smith and they raised their family of three children in Biggar. Many of us remember frantic, three in the morning calls to Marty with some emergency or another, and the relief of seeing that

white truck pull into the yard and down to the barn. With a coffee pot always on, the vet clinic has been a gathering place and an integral part of this community. Marty, you will be missed. I would like to thank the team that is our RM, including work crew, administrative staff and your Councillors for their time and dedication to RM 347. I would like to thank the Town of Biggar for their participation in our great working relationship. We work better when we work together. I would like to thank my ratepayers for their continued support of our RM - such an amazing place to call home, and I wish each and every one of you the best of everything in the New Year.

Also, as a senior, the writer knows that as a junior, he didn’t believe what a First World War veteran told him in the 1930s, and realizes that a lot of this ink has been spattered across this page for nothing! Don’t feel bad about this, kids! I imagine that all down through history, old warriors have said these same things. All the way from earliest times, right down past old Caspar, “Oh, that I do not know,” said he, “But ‘twas a famous victory!” To Mr. Shakespeare, “This story shall the good man tell his son,” and Old Bob Mason, whose often shrugged-off warnings appear in The Biggar Independent. Sometimes I think that we’re up against a lot biggar problems than we know ... and we never seem to learn!

by Trudy and Dale Buxton After a brief stop in Melfort we continue east on Highway 3. While travelling east we pass the small town of Star City. Star City was named after Mr. and Mrs Walter Starkey, who were the first people to homestead in this area. The Starkey’s opened the first post office and had a small general store. The community itself grew steadily to about 600 people in the 1920’s, and with the rich soil and agriculture remained stable over the years. Today’s population remains around 460

people and is an important meeting place for many around the area. Next up is the Town of Tisdale with a current day population of around 3,000 people. Tisdale was originally named “Doghide” after the river that flows through the town, but with the arrival of the railway the name was changed to Tisdale in honour of F.W. Tisdale who was an employee of the Canadian Northern Railway. Tisdale is known as the honey capital of Saskatchewan as this area contributes to 10 per cent the honey sup-

ply in Canada. That’s a lot of honey! It’s no wonder that there is a giant honey bee on the entrance into the community. The honey bee statue is the second largest honey bee in the world at a height of 16 feet, the largest is in Falher Alberta which stands much taller at 22 feet. Tisdale is also quite unique in the Canadian agriculture demographic as this community is surrounded by six of the most recognizable grain and seed operators and a third of that is canola. The intersection of Highway 3 and 35 has around 12,000 vehicles a day passing through it. With that information in hand there was a 7-11 built on the corner that is Canada’s largest 7-11 by available floor space. Did you know that Western Canada’s largest gun shootout took place just east of Tisdale by the Saskatchewan Provincial Police and four outlaws in 1920? One of Canada’s greatest comedians, Brent Butt, came from Tisdale. His most notable achievement of course was the hit TV show “Corner Gas” and the

community of Crooked River. Crooked River was named after the twisted and turning river that flowed through the community. This river was damned to create a millpond for the hamlet. At one time there used to be a large lumber mill supplying finished lumber products around the

Saskatchewan continues to grow at fastest pace in more than a century Saskatchewan’s population grew by 9,869 people in the third quarter of 2023 to a new all-time high of 1,218,976 people as of October 1. Saskatchewan has grown by 31,369 people over the past year the largest population growth in a single year in more than a century. The population growth in the third quarter consisted of net international

migration of 11,021 people and a natural increase (births minus deaths) of 766 offset by net interprovincial outmigration of 1,918 people. Saskatchewan has grown by over 200,000 people since the current government took office in 2007 and is on track to reach the government’s Growth Plan goal of 1.4 million people by 2030.

Stir in onion and green pepper; cook and stir with oil and juices from browned meat until much of the liquid has evaporated, about 2 minutes more. Stir 1⁄2 can diced tomatoes with chilies and Mexicanstyle corn into skillet. Season beef mixture to taste with prepared taco seasoning mix. Stir together the remaining 1⁄2 can diced tomatoes with chilies and refried beans in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high until heated through, stirring every 30 seconds, 1 to 3 minutes. To assemble nachos: Lay half of tortilla chips in a single layer on a microwave-safe plate, then drop teaspoons of refried beans onto chips, followed by meat mixture and shredded cheese. Repeat with remaining chips, beans, meat, and cheese to make a second layer. Microwave on high until cheese is melted and nachos are warm, 2 to 3 minutes. Top with sour cream, salsa, olives, jalapeños, and green onion as desired.

New Year’s resolutions tend to focus heavily on healthy aspirations. Each January, people from all walks of life express a desire to lose weight, exercise more, quit smoking, or get more sleep. However, that doesn’t mean that resolutions cannot involve fun with friends. Resolutions that focus on improving social connections might be something to consider this year. 3/4c warm water 1tbsp active dry yeast 3c all purpose flour 1tbsp milk 1/4c granulated sugar 3/8tsp salt 1 egg 1 egg white 3 tbsp unsalted butter softened 3/4 c dried currants 1tsp WATKINS ORGANIC GROUND CINNAMON 1 egg yolk 2tbsp water

Frosting

1/2 cup powdered sugar 1tsp WATKINS ALL NATURAL ORIGINAL GOURMET BAKING 2tsp milk

with plastic wrap and a kitchen towel, allow to raise until doubled, place in a warm spot for an hour punch down on floured surface, cover, let rest for 10 minutes shape into dough balls and place in a greased pan, cover and rest in a warm place until doubled, about 35-40 minutes mix egg yolk and water, brush on top of dough balls baked at 375F for 20 minutes, rmove from pan and placed on cooling rack

mix together WATKINS ALL NATURAL ORIGINAL GOURMET BAKING VANILLA, milk and powered sugar until smooth place in a piping bag and pipe cross onto each bun Makes a dozen buns
