Biggar Central School 2000 held their Christmas Festival, Thursday, December 14, giving students and parents a chance to venture from classroom to classroom, gym to common area for games and fun.

Games, food and treats, photos with Santa, a frisbee toss, hockey shoot-out, create a festive cupcake, students went from area to area, getting a passport stamped, and it all benefitted the Food Bank. The whole event wrapped up with a community singalong in the commons area to get people further in the Christmas mood. The teachers and staff really knocked themselves out this year with the events and the holiday spirit!

Gartner to represent Kindersley-Biggar

Current MLA and Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Randy Weekes, has lost his bid for the Sask Party nomination for KindersleyBiggar to Kim Gartner.

Weekes lost the Sask Party nod for the redrawn constituency, Thursday, to Gartner, a Macklin resident, who will now represent the area in a planned October provincial election.

The electoral boundary redistribution, an amalgamation of the old Kindersley riding with a part of the BiggarSask Valley riding had Weekes losing much of his former support, forcing him to try and make inroads into an essentially new riding with a

huge base in the Kindersley area.

The current incumbent, Ken Francis, was not seeking re-election.

Gartner a long-time resident of the Macklin area is the current town administrator, a school board trustee and former vice-chair of the Living Sky School Division.

Gartner says he was honoured to be representing the people of the new riding, “and I will be working hard to represent you in our Legislature after the next election.”

Weekes is the second sitting Sask Party member to fail in getting the party nomination. Canora-Pelly’s Terry Den-

nis lost his bid to Sean Wilson, while Terry Jenson won his Sask Party nomination in Warman, and Colleen Young was acclaimed in Lloydminster. The Sask Party’s Greg Lawrence in Moose Jaw-Wakamow, did not seek re-election.

Weekes, the 27th Speaker of the House since 2020, will remain in that role unless an election is called early.

He will remain MLA until the next provincial election. He was first elected in 1999 for Redberry Lake, re-elected in 2003, 2007, and 2011 as MLA for Biggar, re-elected in 2016 and 2020 for Biggar-Sask Valley.

He has not made his plans for 2024 known.

Fuel 94 donates to STARS

Fuel 94, a group of farmers who cut their costs by bulk-buying, made a major donation to STARS Air Ambulance service in Saskatchewan.

Recently, the group decided to close their, and as a last parting move, donated $4,200 to the provincial air ambulance.

Fuel 94 actually started in 1993 with seven farmers who decided to purchase their fuel together.

The group received a

substantial discount.

In 1994 other farmer’s joined the original group. The volume of this group increased and so did the discount.

In 1995 the group tendered. It was Turbo, and because of an accidental fire, Turbo gave up the group and Shell honoured the tender. Shell took the yearly tender until the closing of the bulk station in North Battleford.

The following years, the group grew to 120

members with Esso in North Battleford receiving the tender.

The tender was taken over by U.F.A. from Provost. U.F.A. Had the tender until 2023.

In March of 2023, because of declining membership, the group decided to close.

Over the years Fuel 94 had operated, they ended with $4,200, deciding to give this amount to STARS.

by Sgt. Dereck Crozier, Biggar Detachment This past week 49 occurrences were record for Biggar and area. The majority involved traffic related education that seen 21 drivers being issued tickets and 16 others provided warnings.

With the assistance of The Traffic Services Unit, two check stops were held in town over the weekend, although it was nice to see there were no alcohol related charges to report.

Three roadside suspensions were given for

driving under the influence of drugs. One driver received a three-day suspension for their first offence, and two others received a 21-day suspension for their second offence.

A 2005 Toyota Camry was found “given’er” it’s all on the Highway 14 to the tune of $731, while a 2011 Ford Escape was a little more modest at $570. Travelling at speeds over 35 kilometres above the posted limit can be a costly way of burning that carbon out of the engine.

Report of a domestic assault that ended in charges and conditions

put in place for distances to be kept. Suspicious activity reported out in the Springwater area. A 20-year-old reporting a minor collision with the company truck as it backed into a sign at the Esso. A 35-year-old reporting having their car keys stolen after the ransom demand came from the 43-year-old that was looking to collect on a debt owed. Keys were thrown back into the front yard after some mediation by members.

Duperow Co-op expands with new Biggar Liquor Store

Duperow Co-op is bringing enhanced selection - and experiences - to customers with its new Liquor Store in Biggar.

The new 2,000-squarefoot facility features wine, spirits and beer options from Western Canadian vendors and global producers. The new facility, located at 118 Main Street officially opened on December 12.

Duperow Co-op is excited to offer this service to our members in Biggar and neighbouring communities, said Angela Buhler, General Manager of Duperow Co-op.

Trudeau tries to sneak through another carbon tax

by Franco Terrazzano, Federal Director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s hammer is higher taxes.

People are using too much natural gas? Hit ’em with a carbon tax.

People like their pickup trucks and minivans? Throw another tax at ‘em.

People still want Canada’s oil and gas? Swing the tax hammer again.

With Trudeau’s announcement of a cap on the oil and gas sector, Ottawa is now flirting with its third carbon tax.

Trudeau first imposed a consumer carbon tax in 2019. It now increases the price of gasoline by 14 cents per litre, natural gas by 12 cents per cubic metre and diesel by 17 cents per litre. That carbon tax costs the average family up to $710 this year even after the rebates, according to the Parliamentary Budget Officer.

Trudeau buried a second carbon tax in fuel regulations that kicked in on Canada Day. The regulations require producers to reduce the

carbon content of their fuels. If companies can’t meet the requirements, they’ll be forced to pay the tax.

The federal government hasn’t released an analysis of the current cost of its second carbon tax. But due to the centrally-regulated fuel prices in Atlantic Canada, those provinces announced the second carbon tax would initially cost their drivers between four and eight cents per litre at the pumps.

By 2030, when the fuel regulations are fully implemented, the second carbon tax will add up to 17 cents per litre to the price of gasoline and cost the average family up to $1,157, according to the PBO. On Dec. 7, Trudeau brought in his third carbon tax through a cap on Canada’s oil and gas industry. The government will cap the industry’s emissions and then force companies to purchase emissions credits to keep producing.

This is known as a cap-and-trade system and it’s a form of carbon tax. The government sets up an artificial market and mandates a certain level of emissions that declines over time.

The government-mandated emissions cap determines the carbon tax a company must pay to buy credits.

As the Carbon Tax Center notes, “Politically, cap-and-trade has functioned as a ‘safe harbour’ for politicians who grasp the need to price carbon emissions but cling to the need to ‘hide the price’ to appease interest groups and/or voters.”

We’re already seeing opaqueness from Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault who assures Canadians “the cost of putting in place the regulation” will “come down the road.”

Even economists who support a carbon tax call Ottawa’s oil and gas cap “a step backwards for climate policy.”

For economists who argue in favour of a carbon tax, there’s a crucial kicker: “First and foremost, carbon pricing only works in the absence of any other emission regulations,” economist Ross McKitrick said. “If pricing is layered on top of an emission-regulating regime ... it will not only fail to produce the desired effects in terms of emission rationing, it will have distortionary

effects that cause disproportionate damage in the economy.

“Carbon taxes are meant to replace all other climate-related regulation.”

Trudeau’s three carbon taxes have been added to a mountain of other fuel taxes and regulations.

Canadians pay federal and provincial sales taxes, federal and pro-

vincial excise taxes and even municipal taxes at the gas pumps. Then you pay a couple of federal carbon taxes on top.

The feds seem eager to give corporate welfare to every company that utters the word “green,” politicians “employ every tool available” to chase away natural resource development, and the Trudeau gov-

ernment muses about regulating farmers’ fertilizer use and even emissions from cow burps.

Far from replacing other regulations and subsidies, Trudeau’s three carbon taxes layer additional costs on Canadians who can barely afford to make ends meet.

Fights with Ottawa dominated 2023 Saskatchewan politics

What was all too obvious throughout 2023 is that the federal Liberal government and the provincial Saskatchewan Party government cannot work together.

Most in this province would conclude the problem begins with Ottawa. There is a valid case for this.

In the political vernacular, it’s called “playing the map” - something

that the Sask. Party and the West in general loathes when it comes to federal Liberal government, but something that this provincial government and others do a fair bit as well.

What it means is a governing political party in particular putting its emphasis in places where it can win and resigning itself to the political reality that any effort in areas where you struggle to elect members of your party is simply wasting your efforts.

Ironically, it’s pretty much why we also see growing divide between support for the Sask.

Party government in Regina or Saskatoon and in the small cities, towns and rural settings.

The closer you were to the urban core in 2023, the less likely you were to vote Sask. Party.

But rural folks seemed more inclined than ever

in 2023 to accept the Sask. Party narrative that Saskatchewan’s problems are all a result of the policies of Prime Ministers Justin Trudeau the Sask. Party really leaned into “playing the map” this past year.

Of course, this is something that was neither surprising nor invalid, given Saskatchewan’s political history.

At the best of times, it’s been a long-standing tradition in this province to oppose most everything that comes out of Ottawa. And with inflation running rampant, 2023 is unlikely to be considered the best the of times.

Moreover, this particularly federal government has been horrible for both playing the map and ignoring the concerns of Saskatchewan and the West.

This was best summed

up in by federal Rural Economic Development Minister Gudie Hutchings suggesting that if maybe Western voters started electing more Liberal MPs, they, too, might have the capacity to lobby the federal government caucus to do things like remove the carbon tax on home heating. Evidently, this what Atlantic Liberal MPs did.

Well, 2023 demonstrated there might be other solutions less welcomed by the federal Liberals: Premier Scott Moe announced his government would not collect the carbon tax on natural gas and electrical home heating more common in Saskatchewan.

The decision practically dares the federal government to attempt to prosecute the Saskatchewan for the decision by putting the onus for the

decision on the elected minister responsible for SaskEnergy.

And 2024 - or maybe 2025 - may see Saskatchewan provided with a further solution. If today’s opinion polls are any indication, Trudeau’s Liberals will be replaced in Ottawa with Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives.

But one wonders if even that will truly end the Sask. Party government problems in 2024 and beyond.

One gets the frustrations of the federal government moving those goal posts on which forms of home heating are exempt from the carbon tax and which aren’t, phasing out the use of natural gas for electrical generation by 2035 instead of 2050 and new caps on methane emissions and now oil and gas emissions.

issues under a Poilievre government, that won’t demand the same standards to reduced greenhouse gas GHG) emission reductions.

But lost for much of 2023 - and likely, deliberately so - is how few of Saskatchewan’s governance problems actually had much to do with Ottawa.

A lack of nurses and doctors, closed emergency facilities, high taxes, overcrowded classrooms and 202324 budget that dwindled from a billion-surplus to a quarter-billion deficit.

For a government bragging about record, job, population and GDP growth, one can only conclude that maybe some of the problems of this provincial administration have been administrative choices.

No amount of fight with Ottawa is likely to change that.

How’s that again?

As we were moving up toward Veen in Holland during the war, someone behind us apparently decided that we needed a creeping artillery barrage.

I’m not sure how many big guns they had back there but they made an awful noise!

The whole idea was for the artillery to drop a bunch of HE (High Explosive) a few minutes before we moved up, reset their sites and repeat the whole process.

As far as war goes, the whole idea was pretty good. Maybe that’s how come we eventually captured Veen, I dunno! But like many other opera-

tions that require a lot of people, sometimes something goes a little wrong.

All of a sudden, during one of these shoots while we were hugging the ground as close as we could get, some shells started falling right in amongst us.

I still don’t know if they were our own! It was kind of rare for our own artillery to fall short. A lot of enemy guns were clustered across the river from the Wesel bridge, and could reach us quite easily. Maybe some of their crews dropped a few in behind our barrage just to confuse us.

They sure did!

A little ways back, a big Sherman tank had become stuck in a ditch, and another one, with a cable or something, was trying to pull it out. With all the noise going on, I guess the radio operators in the tanks had decided to use their No. 19 radio sets.

Earlier on we had trained with No. 19 sets in Kingston, Ontario.

Those big radios actually employed three separate communication systems - an intercom

(for in-tank messages: commander to driver or gunner, et cetera), a “B” set for communication between squadron units, and an “A” set tied into the whole attacking forces including our No. 18 sets, a set Y.T. (Yours Truly) lugged all over the place.

The tank radio operators must have mistakenly switched on the “A” set while they were stuck (I don’t know how they did that because of the short range!) but when those shells started falling amongst us and I tried to call up the FOO (Forward Observation Officer) to try and get them to stop shelling us, all I could hear on the radio was the frantic yells of the tank crews: “Back up a bit! Now pull on the @#!* thing!

Try’er again... Go!” And whether we liked it or not, we couldn’t contact the FOO! In the past we had stood not too far back from where some 25-pounders were banging away (87.6 mm British and Commonwealth field artillery). Whenever they fired, the whole gun crew would cover

their ears - that was at the “sending” end.

Up where those shells exploded, the noise was something else! It was quite the barrage because a fellow lying right beside me yelled right in my face a couple of times and all that I saw was his lips moving ... no sound of his voice!

What a racket!

Note: Incidentally, I have that fellow’s name and number: Pippers, V.R. - L108617, a Saskatchewan boy! A piece of shrapnel pierced a phosphorus grenade (phosphorus is a waxy chemical which ignites upon contact with oxygen, causing severe burning). That grenade he had on his belt burned him pretty bad.

We scraped most of the stuff off his skin with a knife and he went out wounded.

Years after the war was over, an ear specialist at the U of S Hospital asked me if I had ever been near a loud noise!

Heck, my ears are still ringing!

Far from being my prettiest part, those ears, which I have carried around for years, have

I don’t imagine that it is the result of the above mentioned racket, but whenever I come down from 30,000 feet or so in an airplane they hurt something awful! It is almost like someone was jamming an ice pick into the side of my head!

Stewardesses and flight attendants have told me over and over to yawn, chew gum, use ear oil, talk (hah!), and everything else, but nothing works. The pain almost makes me yell!

A few years ago I took a trip to Toronto. An old acquaintance picked me up at the airport. My ears were still kind of sore from coming down, and one of the locals asked how they were.

“Almost like someone hit me on the head,” I replied.

He must have been under the influence a little because he slugged me square in the ear and

asked, “Does it feel better?”

Ouch!

Regardless of the continual high-pitched squealing in my ears, so far, thank Heavens, my hearing is still pretty good.

I was walking home from downtown the other day and was just going to cross over to the other side of the road when I thought I’d better look. Sure enough, away down there, a car was coming, so I stayed where I was.

As the car drove by (they never offered me a ride!) I could almost hear the driver remark, “That old guy must have heard us coming from way, way back! I hope that I can hear that well when I get old!”

Because I never actually heard anything, and I’m not up on my lip reading anymore, I darn near stopped them and asked, “How’s that again!”

Stumbling Senate stalls on ag carbon tax relief

by Calvin Daniels Bill C-234 has passed in the Senate which should have agriculture producers celebrating.

But, alas the Senate in its collective wisdom as a duly elected - oh waited they are not elected are they - had to make changes.

Now to be fair the Senate is supposed to be a mechanism of sober second thought on Bills, but that role has increasingly rang hollow as those sitting in the Senate are appointed to wellpaying positions of surprising power free of the scrutiny of an unhappy electorate. It’s highly unsatisfying the Senate can monkey with legislation put forward by the representatives elected

by the people.

So with Bill C-234 farmers will find a significantly watered down creation - one that also sets out some definite losers too.

Bill C-234, an Act to amend the Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act, was put forward to exempt natural gas and propane used on farms from the federal carbon tax.

Now as has been written here exemptions to things such as government Bills will always be applauded by some and questioned by others generally those who are not gaining the advantage of the exemption.

In this case, if the carbon tax has value - and yes that is a matter of great debate - but if it has merit it stands to reason all should pay.

But, then again in the case of agriculture we are looking at the primary business which feeds to populace and ensuring farms remain viable is crucial.

So let’s accept in this case the exemption proposed had merit.

Alas however Senate has significantly weakened what Bill-234 will provide.

In the Senate it was

amended twice to remove barns and greenhouses from a carbon pricing exemption clause and to shorten the sunset period of the exemption for propane and natural gas used in grain drying from eight years to three.

Both changes are massive in nature.

Three years instead of eight dramatically changes the planning a producer will need to undertake, and of course the time to adjust budgets to implement any changes they wish to make in response to the sooner to arrive carbon tax costs.

If you raise livestock in a barn - pigs and poultry - or run a greenhouse it’s immediate crunch time.

Now there are scenarios here which may well impact not just the producers but consumers too.

Those producers who have some control of the sale price of what is produced in their barn or greenhouse will pass the carbon tax on and that means the consumer pays, and food prices are already high.

Of course rare is the producer who controls the price he receives.

So the carbon tax will

be another cost that has to be worked into budget sans a corresponding increase in returns.

It may well mean shuttering some barns and greenhouses and that

would mean an increased reliance on food imports which means lost jobs and a loss of some of our food sufficiency as a nation too.

Ultimately, this one

feels like meddling by unelected Senators content to leave some farmers as losers and the rest as slightly better off losers.

Chiropractors surpass sock goal Throughout the months of October and November, Saskatchewan chiropractors partnered with The Salvation Army to warm the feet of Saskatchewan’s vulnerable people through the 7th Annual Toasty Toes Sock Drive.

Participating chiropractors’ clinics have been collecting donations of new pairs and packages of socks.

The initial goal of this year’s Toasty Toes Sock Drive was to collect 10,000 pairs of socks throughout the province. Saskatchewan chiropractors have surpassed that goal and collected 14,755 pairs of socks and over $2,300 in donations towards other necessities of winter.

Many community members and organizations, such as local schools and post-secondary institutions, also

contributed to collecting socks across the province.

“We would like to thank Saskatchewan residents for their sock donations, and our chiropractic community in Saskatchewan for their continued support of this very worthwhile cause,” says Dr. Jennifer Beggs, President of the Chiropractors’ Association of Saskatchewan.

Socks are a basic clothing necessity, vital in keeping us warm and dry in the winter and an item that many of us may take for granted. Many people in our communities do not have access to socks, making their winters even more difficult.

All socks are donated to The Salvation Army locations throughout the province and put to good use, including the Christmas Hamper pro-

gram.

“The Salvation Army is humbled and grateful for the continued support the community gives us,” said Major Al Hoeft of The Salvation Army. “Their efforts help us continue to give hope to those in need.

The effort put forth by the Chiropractors’ Association of Saskatchewan is incredible and their hard work shows the passion they have for their community. Thank you to everyone.”

In total, over the last seven years of the sock drive, over 107,000 pairs of socks and $9,700 have been collected and donated to those in need.

“We are pleased to have surpassed 100,000 pairs of socks over the years of our Sock Drive, thanks to the generosity of Saskatchewan people!” adds Dr. Beggs.

Chef Dez on Food TikTok Trend: Crinkle Pie There’s a TikTok trend that’s very popular in the culinary world.

This trend is all about scrunching up thin phyllo pastry sheets into a baking dish, pouring a custard over top, and baking it off. It’s called a crinkle pie.

The result? The top is beautifully crisp with

the scrunched up layers of pastry, and the bottom is almost cake like with the baked custard.

This is my take on this trend and it’s perfect for the holiday season.

Orange and cranberry is a great combination of flavours, and I also balance out the sweetness by adding some

white wine vinegar to the orange marmalade.

Don’t be scared off by the one cup of butter as it works out to less than one tablespoon per portion.

Cranberry Orange Crinkle Pie (Recipe created by Chef Dez, chefdez.com) “A unique dessert or appetizer with a cakey bottom and a crispy top” • Baking spray.

• 454g thawed phyllo pastry sheets.

• 1 cup melted butter.

• 200g brie cheese, chilled.

• 3/4 cup orange marmalade.

• 4 teaspoons white wine vinegar.

• 2/3 cup dried cranberries.

• 3/4 cup white sugar.

• 3 large eggs, beaten.

• 2/3 cup milk.

• 2/3 cup whipping cream.

• 2 teaspoons vanilla extract.

• Powdered sugar, for dusting.

• Finely grated orange zest, for garnish.

1.) Preheat oven to 350°F (325° convection) and spray a 12 by 18-inch sized rimmed baking sheet with baking spray.

2.) Take one or two sheets of phyllo at a time and scrunch and pleat with your fingers, and place at one end of the baking sheet. Keep doing this, until the pan is completely filled.

3.) Pour the melted butter evenly over these prepared phyllo sheets and bake for 15 minutes until lightly golden.

4.) Slice the chilled brie cheese and randomly arrange these slices in the folds of the baked phyllo. Mix the orange marmalade and white wine vinegar together and randomly put dollops in the folds of the baked phyllo.

Also, evenly distribute the dried cranberries over the phyllo.

5.) Mix the eggs, milk, whipping cream, and vanilla together and pour evenly over the phyllo sheets. Place bake in the oven and bake for another 30 minutes until golden and the custard has set.

6.) Let cool in the pan for at least five minutes before dusting with some powdered sugar and garnishing with the orange zest. Slice into 18 equal portions.

Dear Money Lady Readers: Will your children get “Affluenza” this year at Christmas?

Don’t worry, it is not the flu or a virus.

Affluenza, is a term that was first coined by Fred Whitman in the 1950’s to describe someone that grows up with social and financial privilege.

This is quite common these days, whether you are wealthy or not.

Many parents overindulged their children.

As a parent, you want nothing but the best for your children. Most parents have worked hard all their lives and generally want their children to have a better life than they did. You want them to have the necessary skills to be successful adults, have a solid education, and be whatever they want to be.

But be careful. There is a fine line between giving enough and giving too much, especially at Christmas.

Most parents are not able to say “no” and sometimes they should.

It’s necessary to teach the lesson that we don’t always get what we want.

Let me ask the parents:

Did you get everything you wanted when you were a child?

Starting young is the best way to teach your children about budgeting. Why not begin with the allowance you give them weekly - let’s say $2 for each year of age for example. So, if your child is 12, they would receive $24 per week.

Sit down with them and discuss the concept of paying themselves first. Go to your bank and open a savings account for your child and get them their very own debit card. Show them how to use on-line banking to view their new account.

Now, with the allowance, ask them to put $10 every week into their savings account, allow them to spend $8 a week on whatever they would like, and then share the other $6 with a charitable cause.

Spreading their new income this way will teach your children some very valuable lifelong lessons. They will recognize the value of saving over time as they see their $10 per week grow into over $520 in one year. They will figure out how to make their $8 spending allowance stretch each week and build valuable budgeting skills; and they will also develop a social conscience to support local charities.

Why not sit down as a family and draw up a monthly budget that accommodates activities and purchases for every

child in the family.

By the way, we as parents should have this locked down for our own budget and expenditures - so lead by example here.

When someone invariably asks for something in the near future that is not part of the plan, you will have to say: “No, that’s not in the budget, but maybe we can make it part of the budget for next year.”

Learning how to have your finances in order will ensure a lifelong foundation for future achievements, wellgrounded expectations of what to strive for, good habits to reduce debt, and the ability to create a successful lifestyle plan.

Monetary setbacks are a fact of life for everyone. Having the skills learned when you are young will allow your adult children to know that sometimes you have to go back to the basics to cleanup your finances to get ahead. It’s always okay to restart and begin again. It’s sometimes the only thing we can do and could turn out to be the best thing for us in the end.

Senior Boys The Senior Boys have had a busy start to the 2023-24 season.

They started off with exhibition games against Asquith and Delisle. The boys came away with wins in both contests.

On December 1-2 the boys played in the Unity tournament.

Here, against some very competitive teams, they lost the consolation final.

On December 15-16 the boys travelled to Delisle where they played very well and won the consolation championship.

This has been a great start to the year. With 12 very dedicated boys, the

team is improving every day. Good luck after Christmas boys.

Senior Girls The Senior Girls ended 2023 by attending a tournament in Kerrobert. The girls got off to a slow start, but their play improved dramatically over the weekend.

Look for the Senior Girls to continue to improve and be a force in 2024.

Junior Boys The Junior Boys have a young team with only three Grade 9s on the roster. In total there are 14 boys who come out to practice every day. The boys are learning and

improving every practice and game.

The boys played St. Gabriel and Perdue schools in exhibition games and came away with the victory in both games.

Look for this young team to keep getting better with every practice and game.

Junior Girls The Junior Girls Basketball team has been off to a great start this season!

The girls played their first exhibition game on Wednesday, December 13 at BCS against Perdue with a successful win.

The Juniors played in a

one-day tournament this weekend on Saturday, December 16 in Rosetown. Six teams were in attendance, with BCS playing three of those teams. The Junior Blazers were undefeated in their tournament, winning all three of their games. The girls played Rosetown (57-27), Davidson (61-21), and Outlook (68-29).

The girls have already shown a lot of improvement through their practices and games, and we look forward to seeing how they do throughout the rest of their season!

by Trudy and Dale Buxton It’s a beautiful summer day and the start of our week long trip into Manitoba. It is always nice to travel into different jurisdictions and see some different sights.

Our trip starts off heading into Saskatoon and then northeast

into Wakaw. If you are in need of making a stop then the Country Crossroads Shell on the intersection of Highway 2 and 41 is perfect. This service station is a “One Stop Shop” and has everything.

Among the obvious, there is a restaurant, a “Subway”, full-line bakery with a cinnamon

bun to die for, a liquor outlet, homemade beer sausage and pepperoni, and a whole bunch of other items. This is a favourite stop whenever I’m in the area and need to stock up on highway food.

After our pit stop we continue heading east on Highway 41.

If you are looking to relax in the summer near a beach, Wakaw Lake is 19 kilometres in length, is home to over 800 cabins and is listed as one of the best vacation destinations in Saskatchewan.

The name Wakaw comes from the Cree word meaning “Crooked”

The Regional Park and resort offers exceptional golfing, water-play, fishing and camping.

Did you know that Prime Minister John Diefenbaker opened his first law office in the Town of Wakaw? Eastern Europeans were the first to come to this area and settle around 1911, and it was incorporated as a town in 1953.

Wakaw even has an excursion train called the “Wheatland Express” which travels a piece of track that is around 47 miles long into the nearby community of Cudworth. The train experience is around three-hours long and runs year round.

Continuing are travels we go by a place that was

once a small community and that community is Tarnopol, established by five Polish families and named after the Polish town of Tarnopol.

During the Second World War, Tarnopol and nearby areas were taken over by Russia, eventually becoming part of the Ukraine.

As we continue, we travel past another community that is basically a ghost town - the community of Meskanaw, which was named from the Cree word meaning trail or road. Meskanaw had its first settlers around the 1890’s. Today 15 people call the place home.

Next up is the City of Melfort.

The first settlers of this area began arriving

around 1884.

One of the first ladies of the early settlement, Mrs. Reginald Beatty, was given the task of naming the community.

Mrs. Beatty named the community after her family place in Scotland named Melfort. Melfort was incorporated as a city in 1980.

Originally nicknamed the “City of Northern Lights” due to the vast frequency of Northern Lights that appear, over the years Melfort has developed into a large recreational city and has since changed its nickname to “Play Melfort”.

On Dec 11, Acacia Chapter No. 3 Biggar Order of the Eastern Star presented $500 to Christina Olson to help with her medical expenses and/or purchase of an artificial arm. She had to have her arm amputated due to contracting flesh eating disease earlier this year.

Sask West This Week

by Phil Heilman A busy weekend in the Sask West Hockey League (SWHL) completed week 8 of its schedule, and it is still the Wilkie Outlaws leading the league with an 8-0 record.

The pesky Biggar Nationals sit at second place with a 6-4-1 record, while the Kindersley Sr Klippers (6-3) and the Hafford Hawks (6-3) are tied for third.

The Macklin Mohawks (4-4-1), Edam 3 Stars (2-4-1) and the Unity Miners (0-9-1) round out the standings as of December 18.

The Sunday nighter at the Credit Union Legacy Centre pitted the hometown Macklin Mohawks against the Biggar Nationals and in an very back and forth affair, it was the Nats coming out on top in

overtime, 6-5.

Brett Novak opened the scoring early in the first, but Spencer Bast replied just five minutes later.

Three minutes after that, and on the power play, Jonathan Redlick scored his 13th goal on the year to give the Nats the 2-1 lead. Once again, the Mohawks tied it up off the stick of Corey Doetzel. The teams went to the locker room tied at 2-2 after 20 minutes.

Five minutes into the middle frame, Tyler Baier fired a shot into the twine, but on cue, and again on the power play, Redlick scored to tie it back up at 3. Just before the 11 minute mark, Chris Henry scored, which gave the Nats the 4-3 lead after two periods.

In the third, Cody McKinnon scored two

goals in just 14 seconds to retrieve the lead back.

It took until the last minute before the Nats were able to tie it up as Chris Henry scored, sending it into overtime.

In the extra frame, amongst a flurry a shots from both teams, it was Biggar again waiting until the last moment.

Ryan Novacosky scored with just two seconds left to secure the victory for the away squad.

Brett Matlock stopped 54 of 59 shots in the OT Win, while Owen Bosch stopped 29 of 35 shots in the tough luck OTL. The Biggar Nationals hosted the Unity Miners Friday night, and it was the home team scoring the 7-4 victory.

but just two minutes later, Jonathan Redlick and Brett Novak scored just 20 seconds apart to tie the game at 2 after 20 minutes.

The scoring barrage continued as Redlick scored just four minutes into the middle frame.

It took 10 more minutes for scoring to happen with Hunter Sperle to tie it up at 3. But two goals for Wyatt Versluis in a three-minute span gave the Nats a 5-3 lead.

Redlick made the hats rain after that and the Nats took their 6-3 lead into the final frame. Mikkel Olson and Lyndon Jellison traded goals in the third to reach the final score.

Ryan Rewerts stopped 36 of 43 shots in the loss, Brett Matlock stopped 29 of 33 shots for the win.

Evelyn Poletz passed away on December 4, 2023 in Provost, AB. Evelyn is lovingly remembered by her children, Viola (deceased) and family Lori Stratychuk and Cory Stratychuk; Gloria Johnson and son Dean Johnson; Laura Campbell and family Tina Elmer and Corrina Lybert; Kerry Poletz and family Susan Johnson, Trevor Poletz and Deanne Miller; Roger Poletz (Joanie) and family Steven Poletz, David Poletz, Debbie Poletz, Justin Rogers, Ryan Rogers and Krysta Rogers; Marilyn Butscher (Carl) and family Kaylee Poletz and Christina Allen; Connie Leschinski (George) and family Shane Leschinski, Jorden Leschinski, Georgina Leschinski and Shawn Leschinski; Brian Poletz (Michelle) and Quinn Poletz; Kevin Poletz and son Tristan Poletz;

A Funeral Service for Evelyn was held on Monday, December 11, 2023 at 2:00PM at Biggar United Church. Tributes may be directed to The Canadian Diabetes Association. Arrangements entrusted to Gerein Funeral Service.

Asquith Council news for December Asquith Town Council held its regular council meeting on December 13.

Attending was Mayor Gail Erhart, DeputyMayor Jackie Stobbe, and Councillors Darcy Stack, Pete Heck, Cecilia Mryglod, Jodi Nehring, and Wade MonksJanzen. Also attending was C.A.O. Kathy Picketts and Office Assistant Kaila Montgomerie.

The meeting was called to order by Mayor Erhart at 7 p.m.

A resolution was made

to accept the council minutes from the November 2023, regular council meeting.

Council made a motion to accept the November 2023 financials and November 2023 bank reconciliation as presented to them at the meeting.

Accounts Paid in the amount of $34,873.27 and Accounts Payable of $62,058.88 was accepted as presented.

The Asquith Town Office will be closed for Christmas holidays from December 26 to December 28, open on December 29, and closed on January 1, 2024.

A reminder letter has been sent out to all taxpayers that taxes must be paid by December 31, 2023. Any taxes not received by that date will be subject to a penalty of 15 per cent.
