Local student actors hit the Majestic Theatre stage for the Missoula Children’s Theatre production of Peter and Wendy, a whimsical take on the classic Peter Pan story. Council Minute highlights The regular meeting of Biggar Town Council was held November 8, at 7:15 p.m. in the Council Chambers. Attending the meeting were Mayor Ray Sadler, Aldermen Alan Boyle, Penny McCallum, Kevin McNicholls, Kirk Sherbino, Edward Young, and Ivan Young.

Council resolved that the minutes from the November 12, 2019 Committee Meeting of the Whole, be accepted as presented.

Council resolved that the RCMP report for the month of October, 2019 be accepted as presented

by Corporal Dereck Crozier.

Council resolved that the Community Development Officer’s report to November 19, 2019 be accepted as presented by the Community Development Officer, D’Shae Bussiere.

Council resolved that the Town Foreman’s report to November 15, 2019 be accepted as presented by the Town Foreman, Mark Haynes.

Council resolved that the following financial reports for October, 2019, be accepted as present-

ed: Bank Reconciliation; Statement of Financial Activities.

Council resolved that the General Accounts Paid in the amount of $60,010.41 and the General Accounts Payable in the amount of $108,086, be approved.

Council resolved that the following correspondence be accepted for Council’s information and filed: Water Security Agency Waterworks Inspections; Catterall and Wright Community Planning.

Council resolved that the Landfill Supervisor Contract Agreement between the Town and Helga Fellehner for the year 2020, be signed and approved.

Council resolved that the remainder of the 2019 municipal taxes for Lot 1 Block 9 Plan D4770 be cancelled in the amount of $562.95 as the property is now exempt.

Council resolved that a two-year tax exemption for Lots 1-3 Block 1 Plan 102315754 for the municipal portion, be approved as indicated: 2020 - 100 per cent; 2021 - 100 per cent.

Council resolved that

the request from T-Roy’s Trucking to rent Lot 4 Block 1 Plan 102135754 be approved at $1,000 per year plus GST with the Town retaining a right of way.

Council resolved that in accordance with the Tax Incentive Agreement with M and M Cattle and Land for the 100 per cent exemption of municipal taxes in the amount of $4,247.70 for 2019 on Lots 11-12 Block 16 Plan D4770, the request be granted.

Fiscal update puts us deeper in the red Finance Minister Bill Morneau released the Liberal government’s first fiscal update since the election, and the financial hole is getting deeper.

Morneau says that over the last four years, their

government has “focused on Canadians and on the things that people need to build a better future for themselves and their families.”

He says that investments in people and in

communities have helped to create an economy that is strong and growing.

Many on the Prairies and in the West would disagree.

Conservative Shadow Minister for Finance,

Pierre Poilievre says that many have lost jobs right before Christmas.

“Now they are left facing the cold reality that their government has no plan to help get the country back to work in the New

People are suffering. 71,000 Canadians lost their jobs in November, while a quartermillion more Americans went to work. Half of Canadians are $200 from insolvency. Bankruptcies, insolvencies and defaults have grown.”

Morneau, however, kept towing the Liberal Party line, saying they are “committed to taking real and meaningful action by investing responsibly to build an economy that works for more people, while at the same time being vigilant about whatever challenges the future may bring.”

He admits, there remains too many people working harder to make ends meet.

Morneau continued to say the economy is doing well, saying there is strong job creation and rising wages.

“At the same time, we know that some people are still worried about making ends meet, and about what the future holds for themselves and their families,” Morneau said.

He added that the 2019 Economic and Fiscal Update also signals the government’s intention to launch a consultation with accounting experts and stakeholders on the idea of adopting a transparent way of accounting for gains and losses in the government’s financial reporting.

Poilievre stressed that we all need urgent action to relaunch the Canadian economy. The Conservatives are calling for a three-point plan, cutting taxes for workers and entrepreneurs to reward investment and work; liberate our businesses to build, hire and grow, by eliminating red tape; and reassure investors with a reasonable plan to phase out the deficit.

Election night platitudes are merely empty promises October 21: Justin Trudeau election night speech.

He was reaching out to residents of Saskatchewan and Alberta who had soundly wiped out any Liberal representation on election night.

“I’ve heard your frustration, and I want to be there to support you,” Trudeau said. He went on to say these two great provinces were an “essential” part of Canada.

Fast forward to earlier this week. Trudeau’s Liberals announced it will be lowering carbon tax rebates for people in provinces that don’t meet the federal carbon pricing standards.

Just a mere two months since the Prime Minister declared Saskatchewanians were “essential” to stabbing us in the back once again. And, during the Christmas season no less.

If there were a “grinch” award, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his Liberal Party would win it hands down. If this is what they mean by “being there to support you”, then we really can’t afford that kind of support.

It’s no wonder the residents of this province are disillusioned with the feds and are turing their backs on them. This is just one more reason more voters will start thinking about separation.

Music is magical “Ah, music,” he said, wiping his eyes. “A magic beyond all we do here!”

J. K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone It wouldn’t be Christmas without Christmas carols and songs. Mostly everyone loves them. I say mostly because we do have one “scrooge” in the office who does not care for them. Being mischievous I like to start playing them at the beginning of December.

Having said that, the music during the season is timeless. Jingle Bells is still as popular with the kids today as it was with my parents’ generation.

Bing Crosby and his famous song is fresh in my mind as I recently attended a performance of The Tenors where the song was performed.

This was a special project for the group this year.

The Tenors were invited to participate in a revival of Bing’s recordings.

The album “Bing at Christmas” was

brought together by Decca and Bing’s widow Kathryn and his children. The release was in November of this year, just in time for Christmas.

On the album Bing’s original vocals are set to newlyrecorded orchestral arrangements

by The London Symphony Orchestra.

today’s technical advances. Judging from the performance we were treated to, the album will bring back memories for some and instill new memories in others.

Another timeless song is Handel’s Messiah. An interesting point is that the musical piece was originally intended to be played at Easter, the first performance was in Dublin at Musick Hall in 1742. There were over 700 in the audience.

Another little tidbit was that ladies were requested not to wear hoops under their dresses which would mean more people could be sat in the theatre.

in complete silence, mesmerized from the moment the tenor sang the opening line, “Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God,” to the finale. Two hundred and fifty years after Handel’s death the Baroque piece still draws the crowds.

Messiah has become a fixture of the Christmas season. Many concert halls across the world include it in their holiday lineup. Let’s not forget the sales of CDs and downloads. Musicians who have performed the work consider it the highlight of their careers.

There is evidence that Messiah was Handel’s favourite. He was a benefactor of many charities

and frequently gave performances to raise funds. At each and every one of these events he always performed The Messiah. In later years when he was in ill health and dying he insisted on attending a performance at the Theatre Royal in Covent Garden. Eight days later he died at home.

Music is indeed magic.

Is it more magic at Christmas? That’s for each individual to decide but there is no doubt music does change the mood. It can tell a tale in a very moving way no matter the genre.

Christmas Reflection

by Marjorie Fortney, Seventh-day Adventist Church The incredible story of the babe in the manger of Bethlehem never looses its relevance.

It is as important today as it was two thousand years ago. We continue to celebrate the birth of our Saviour who is our salvation.

Matthew 1:21 states: “And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from

their sins.”

“Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is God with us” Matthew 1:23. Matthew wanted to make sure the people understood that this was not just an ordinary child, not only is his name Jesus, but Emmanuel, God in the flesh, the long awaited Messiah.

Since Jesus came to dwell with us, we know

that God is acquainted with our trials, and sympathizes with our grief.

Every son and daughter of Adam may understand that our Creator is the friend of sinners. For every doctrine of grace, every promise of joy, every deed of love, every divine attraction presented in the Saviour’s life on earth we see “God with us”.

Take advantage of this wonderful gift of love given to humanity.

Can you imagine what

our world could be like if we all lived like Jesus did when He was physically here on the earth?

“Glory to God in the highest, peace, good will toward men”, Luke 2:14.

His thoughts toward us are thoughts of peace.

New exhibit coming to Biggar Museum and Gallery this January

Jessica Richter and Waltraude Stehwien: Scissor Cuts/Scherenschnitte comes to the Biggar Museum and Gallery this January.

The show comes to Biggar through the Organization of Saskatchewan Arts Councils (OSAC) and its Arts on the Move program.

Scherenschnitte (scissor cuts) is an art form where silhouettes are cut from one piece of special black paper with scissors or knives with no ‘hangers’ - unattached pieces.

Scissor cutting has a long history in German folk art; immigrants brought Scherenschnitte to North America in the 17th Century.

Reflecting the Canadian artists in Scissor Cuts/

Scherenschnitte, this collection of works ranges from traditional German Scherenschnitte represented by Waltraude Stehwien, a German immigrant, to papercut evolved into sculpture by Jess Richter - second generation born in Canada.

Employing creativity to express a landscape, scene and image with cut paper requires precision in drawing as well as dexterity of cutting.

Stehwien prefers scissors as they “bite” the paper; designing her pieces by drawing out her complete design, reworking it on the back of the traditional black paper before making any cuts.

While Stehwien enjoys the challenging restrictions of traditional Scherenschnitte, Richter explores all that paper can do. Richter, preferring the Exacto knife, works more organically, creating pieces for her sculptures as she goes.

Neither artist likes using computers in their art.

In Stehwien’s opinion, “Computers are remote.

Art is sensual.”

Richter reluctantly learned computer draft-

ing for her MFA degree from the University of Regina but prefers the ‘tactileness’ of pencil (or knife) to paper.

of course is that the fear is often made worse by the deluge of information available at our fingertips. Often reports that are suggested as cold hard facts conflict with other reports also deemed equally factual.

And, then there are the deluge of half-truths, rumours, opinions and outright fabrications that float nebulously around social media muddying the water in terms of actually knowing if a new science is good, or bad.

That is why we need well-established regulations, because there needs to be processes in place to determine safety for those things the public is generally not qualified to fully understand.

That does not mean however that such processes should be barriers to new developments.

In terms of agriculture there is a constant need for new varieties, better crop protection products, better fertilizers, simply better everything to allow producers to stay competitive with farmers around the world, and to increase production in the face of a growing population.

That is where the balance is required.

sonally, when Y.T. was young he wanted to roam away in the local hills and “discover� the land like a pioneer, So, he did.

And trudging home after these escapades realized for the first time, that thinking and planning for those so-treasured forays was far more satisfying than actually doing them.

So he got old, and at 65, was told that he was kind of useless.

So he fixed up around the place and did a lot of the things he hadn’t time to do in the past. He gardened, golfed, bowled and built until (like the kid trudging back from the hills) he again realized that it is dreaming of retiring that really counts.

Money many have been a thing that we worked for in the past, but with O.A.S., company pension, DVA support and CPP rolling in, we sure had enough to provide for our meagre wants.

I suppose it is a great benefit just to claim being a Canadian, although somewhere along the line we’ve noticed that the “cost of living� index (along with everything else) has gone way up.

Mebbe younger types, who seem to have a fairly good grasp on these angles, look for every social move made by governments concerning this stuff. But Y.T. (being Y.T.) just picks up his hammer and hoe.

The old folks (bless them) left us with a very earthly outlook.

My Dad’s ambition was full of meaning (not that he valued wealth so much).

But because to him in a wheatfield greening, were the parts of Creation that he could touch!

Compared to this other viewpoint: (ie) I’ll bet that if one were to ask a hundred people what the aims of Bill 52 are, very few would have even the slightest idea.

Someone, somewhere has it all figured out, and although it’s possible that open forums do accomplish something, we pay politicians to take care of these things.

There is no doubt that fault finders can be found to criticize any retirement program, but many of us (like mentioned above) will reach for our hoes, hammers and nine irons.

The rat race which, to me at least, seems part of everyday effort, has become a thing of our

past. Y.T. just strolls around, has a cup of coffee, or just sits back and takes it easy.

Thing will go on long after we disappear (I think) only a hypocrite expects it to be otherwise, and retired old Y.T. has really enjoyed the last few years.

Mebbe sometime in the far-off future someone will open the old L and T and remark: “That old guy spent so much of his life telling about what he’s done. I wonder if he had any time left to do the things he sez.�

But Pigskin refused to fill Mammie’s car with gas because, after all, she had become a millionaire too and wasn’t going to work in any gas station.

I forget how it all ended up, but the moral of the whole thing stayed with me ever since.

Somebody has to mind the store, do the work. Do something and this Bob Mason is where the main problem of retirement lies.

Often I wonder (at least on the few facts that Y.T. knows) what will happen when society finds (because of its ever increasing social programs) itself unable to support those hands that stretch out toward it.

Everyone (including Y.T.) counts on that support after they retire, whereas the older people of our modern society used to feed and take care of themselves.

How long can we let this present process on relying on other for almost everything go on?

Over the years (however misspent) life has taught me that every living person is a power and religion in themselves.

Mebbe this seems some kind of secular approach (I dunno). Mebbe these suggestions that Y.T. makes about this selfimportance thing won’t work (again, I dunno), but I do know that as man developed through the ages, it wasn’t because of his beliefs more than his ability to feed and clothe himself.

Years ago, even before Y.T. started to scribble this stuff, he decided never to get caught up in this kind of argument again. Yet here he is, spouting page after page about man’s reliance on himself, and wondering sometimes why folks don’t listen to everything he says.

Certainly he doesn’t know how all these seemingly impossible dreams are going to work out.

What are the ultimate goals of retirement anyway? To many they are doing the things they have always wanted to do, and couldn’t because of “making a living�. Per-

Recently on the news it was mentioned that the Compulsory Retirement Law has been “rescinded�, whatever that means. but for some this modern “influence over our actions� has come a little too late.

I’m sure that I have no idea who initiated (if that is the right word) the former retirement act (if there was such a thing), but I do know that it was meant to apply to people who wanted to collect OAS and didn’t want to or couldn’t work anymore.

There are a lot of people in both categories, I’m sure, but there are also a lot who could still contribute even menially quite a bit. “I know young men of 80 and old men of 35.�

There are quite a few places in the world that don’t even have a definite retirement age, yet their citizens seem to somehow make out okay.

Heck, when the union told Y.T. that he had to retire (at 65) he came home for 20 years, and while visiting the old work site a while ago, realized that if he couldn’t do the work of any three men getting 20 dollars an hour then, he’d feel that he was crippled.

A fellow doesn’t have to look very far these days to get “professional� advice on how to retire, how to invest one’s earnings, and where to spend one’s “golden years�. Almost, it seems as though contacting these experts was free.

Mebbe he’s some kind of a pessimist, but when Y.T. sees some of those huge buildings on Bay Street, he wonders how many retirees contributed a cornerstone.

A little on the lighter side (we like it that way) I often think of General Bullmoose on the Lil Abner funnies.

Bullmoose one time decided to divide his wealth up among his fellow Americans, and was so wealthy that every one of them became a millionaire. Of course, Mammy Yokum immediately went out and bought a new car. Which she drove down to the filling station where Pigskin McKie worked.

New Horizons hopping in December

by Chasity Braitenbach We’ve been busy, busy down at New Horizons these past couple weeks (or should I say months?)

Over the past week we had our birthday potluck and bingo as well as our usual weekly activities.

There have been Christmas luncheons and hall rentals to also keep us busy.

At our birthday potluck on December 9 we had a total of 28 in attendance.

The St. Gabriel Grade 3 and 4 classes came down to perform a couple of songs on their ukeles and

sing Christmas carols.

They were absolutely adorable. The half-andhalf winner this day was Helen Buxton, who graciously donated back $5 of her winnings.

We’d like to send the best of birthday wishes to our members born in December: Pat Auckland, Evonne Beeson, Blanche Borchardt, Edna Erickson, Vera Halter, Louis Henrichs, Alan Hoogeveen, Charlie Logan, Marlene McCarthy, Betty Mundt, Bernice Sutherland, Don Swyryda, Ray Wood, Beth Young, and Chasity Braitenbach.

We also did our Christmas raffle draws at the birthday potluck. The winner of the $100 Shop Easy gift certificate was me. I mentioned re-drawing for a new winner but they insisted that I keep the prize.

I hope nobody thinks I rigged the draw. The winners for the two $50 cash prizes were Janice Mason and Evalynn Mann, the winner of the handmade afghan was Leo Schwebius and the winner of the handmade lace tablecloth was Amy Oesch.

Congrats to the winners.

We had a total of 17 players come out to bingo on Dec. 12. The winner of the halfand-half game was Pat Turner and there was a tie for the blackout game between Pat Turners and Daisy Ramos.

MEMORIAM

OBITUARIES GEORGE PERCY LAMB

George was born the second son of Sterling and Florence on June 25th, 1933 in Biggar. He took his final flight from his earthly home on November 5, 2019 at Biggar Extended Care Home where he had lived for almost two years.

George was an independent person but was very thankful for this help when he needed it.

As a child he was raised in Biggar and took all of his schooling here, always active and on the go involved in any and all sports he could find, baseball, swimming, diving, basketball, skating and hockey. Field days at school were always important to him, as he excelled in most sports winning the school crest for his age group was a highlight. As soon as he was old enough George joined Biggar’s Fisher Squadron Air Cadets. he always did his best and eventually earning the privilege of being accepted for pilot training and receiving his pilots license as a teenager. george remained active with the squadron as long as he remained in Biggar.

He then followed his father into working for CNR for a number of years, and during this time married Jessie Snead and had three children all born in Biggar. His love for flying couldn’t be denied and he acquired employment in Saskatoon where he could both fly and instruct flying. After a few years he moved on to Prince Albert where he became a bush pilot and was also instructing flying.

Then it was on to British Columbia and a government job flying officials around to their projects and finally landing in Calgary to fly for the airlines there, until a heart attack grounded him. His last job was with the City of Calgary Transportation System. As his first marriage dissolved he was on his own for a few years until he met and married Maria Wanlin, and after her passing he decided to return to Biggar. George was predeceased by his wife Maria; parents Sterling “Sam” and Florence, sister Jacque Mohr, sisters-in-law beverly Lamb and Zilda Lamb, brother-in-law Ron Archibald and a niece Susan Fahie(who passed away on November 5th, 2019 as well). George is survived by his son Terri, daughter LaurieAnne(Robert Kumm) and son Jordan; brothers David(Shirley) and families, Robert Lamb and sister Barbara Archibald and family, brother-in-law Wayne Mohr and family, the Wanlin family, as well as several nieces and nephews.

We can imagine him soaring in the clouds as we grieve and miss him. Arrangements were entrusted to Gerein Funeral Home.

SHAW WEBSTER It is with great sadness, we announce the passing of Shaw Webster on December 9, 2019.

Shaw passed away at the Biggar and District Health Center at the age of 64.

Shaw was born to Jack and Millie Webster on October 30, 1955.

He was the youngest of four children. A brother to Jean, Shirley and Jack. Shaw attended school in Saskatoon and received a Grade 8 education. Shaw resided in Biggar his entire life with his parents until their passing. He moved into the Norwest apartments in 2010, where he lived alone. In 2013 Shaw moved into the Diamond Lodge. Shaw was very happy at the Diamond Lodge/Biggar and District Health Centre. He enjoyed the jokes and company of the staff and received excellent care there.

Shaw loved being around family and friends. He was always happy and his laughter was contagious. He had the ability to make the best of everything.

Shaw loved animals, especially horses. He loved listening to country music and watching old Western movies.

Shaw will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

Shaw is survived by his brother Jack (Linda) Webster, nieces and nephews Jacie and Tammy Keedwell, Kim(Dennis) Martin children Kenzie and Rayel, Brandi(George) Mair children McKenna, Stratton, Carson and Georgia, Shantell Redlick, Cole (Ky) Webster and son Syd, Claire and Courtney Webster.

Shaw was predeceased by his father Jack Webster , mother Millie Webster. Sisters Jean Keewell and Shirley Redlick and brotherin-laws Rod Keedwell and Gordon Redlick.

A celebration of Shaw’s life was held on December 13, 2019 at the Biggar United Church.

Blazer Senior Boys Basketball Independent Holiday Hours

This past week saw the Senior Boys Basketball Team head to Unity for a tournament.

On Friday, the boys played Paradise Hill and despite being down 15 with five minutes left to play they managed to pull out a one point victory.

Then on Saturday

they played a very tough Unity team and lost. This put them in the third place game. Here they had a close back and forth game with Watrous and ended up winning by nine to collect third place.

When we come back to school in January the Senior Boys and Girls

will travel to Kerrobert on January 8. Jan. 9 sees the Perdue Junior Boys come to Biggar. Then on Jan. 10-11 the girls travel to Perdue for a tournament. and 10-11 is the Senior Boys home tournament.

Everyone come and watch and cheer.
