BCS2000 held their annual costume parade, Tuesday, for students and staff eager to show their Halloween attire. A fun event where you could see a Trex high-fiving a princess, a monster and a hero every combination of fun, all vying for the best costume. by Sgt. Dereck Crozier, Biggar Detachment Happy chilly end to October, not something we like to see having flurries and below zero conditions before Halloween. It is good to be back after a visit to the Maritimes and the weather did not disappoint for a great fall visit.

This past week showed 41 occurrences dealt with. Traffic Education had 10 warnings provided and 13 tickets. The most significant was a grey 2021 Silverado in a hurry to go nowhere on Highway 14 east of Perdue found passing two semi’s at the same time, travelling in excess of 35 kilometres above the posted speed. It will cost $708 when you come charging up on the provincial traffic enforcement unit.

Getting a bottle was better then what was on their menu.

Report of suspicious activity at the Post Office after hours. Suspicious abandoned bright pink Hummer reported in the RM of Glenside. Vehicle was unregistered and owner offered no explanation to circumstances around it.

Lost prescription narcotics reported somewhere between here and Saskatoon, if found, they should be turned into police or pharmacy for disposal.

Two Alarm calls received and three reports of Fraud consisting of the usual Publishers Clearing House, crypto currency sales and e-mail transfers for goods not received.

Seven calls in a 24-hour period involving drunken shenanigans from Perdue to Biggar. It is not a successful weekend until police and EMS are invited to your family gathering.

Welcome back, Trevor Panczak!

Second Arts Council show features Canadian country star

Trevor Panczak comes to the Majestic Theatre, Thursday, November 9 for the second concert in the Biggar and District Arts Council performance series. (Submitted Photo)

He’s been here before, and for Trevor Panczak - Canada’s “Gentle Giant”, he will reprise his show for the second Biggar and District Arts Council show of the season.

Big on talent and a physically large 6’ 5”, Panczak was at the Biggar Majestic Theatre this past season in April. His show was a wonderful blend of country charm, sincerity and musical virtuosity.

Panczak grew up in a supportive home where music was played, appreciated and became the soundtrack of the entire family’s life on the farm.

“I was exposed to everything country including Hank Williams Jr. and Sr, Don Williams, Jerry Reed, Randy Travis Merle Haggard, George Strait, Alan Jackson, Clint Black and Dan Seals,” Panczak explained. “I also loved listening to artists like

Elvis, Englebert, ABBA and The Beatles. There are too many to mention but whatever my dad liked, I liked and it grew from there. One of my first memories as a kid, I remember sitting and listening to the American Country Countdown on the radio sitting in the cab of the pick-up truck and just getting lost in the music. My dad would send me on an errand to get a wrench or something and I would totally forget to go back to him because I was so captivated by the songs.

I remember draining the battery in the sprayer truck on the farm, listening to the Smokey and the Bandit soundtrack over and over again.”

Panczak hits the Majestic Theatre, Thursday, November 9, the second show of the 2023-24 Biggar and District Arts Council concert season.

Sask says no to Trudeau carbon tax on natural gas heating

Premier Scott Moe announced Monday that the province will end carbon pricing on natural gas heating in response to the federal government pausing carbon pricing on heating oil for some Atlantic areas.

“Today I am calling on the federal government to offer the same carbon tax exemption to Saskatchewan families by extending it to all forms of home heating, not just heating oil. It’s only fair to other Saskatchewan

and Canadian families,” Moe said in the video statement.

“Hopefully, that exemption will be provided soon. But if not, effective January 1, SaskEnergy will stop collecting and submitting the carbon tax on natural gas - effectively providing Saskatchewan residents with the very same exemption that the federal government is giving heating oil in Atlantic Canada.”

Moe’s move came in response to Prime Min-

ister Justin Trudeau’s announcement that the federal government would be doubling the pollution price rebate rural top-up rate and implementing a threeyear pause to the federal carbon price on deliveries of heating oil in all jurisdictions where the federal fuel charge is in effect.

“If you live in a rural community, you don’t have the same options that people who live in cities do. We get that,” Trudeau said during

the announcement. “So, this is more money in your pocket to recognize those realities, even as we continue to fight climate change.”

Moe said the federal exemption is an acknowledgement that carbon pricing hurts Canadians.

While heating oil is used in both Ontario and Quebec, it’s primarily relied on in Atlantic Canada.

“The federal government may say that’s illegal and that you simply cannot choose to col-

lect and pay your tax.

In most cases I would agree with that,” Moe said. “But it’s the federal government that’s created two classes of taxpayer by providing an exemption for heating oil - an exemption that really only applies in one part of the country and effectively excludes Saskatchewan.”

Moe wants Saskatchewan to get a fair deal.

“As premier, it’s my job to ensure Saskatchewan residents are treated fairly and equally with our fellow Canadians in other parts of the country,” he said. “And that’s what I’m doing today.”

The Sask Party and the NDP were united in calling for the carbon pricing exemption. Following Question Period on Monday, both parties unanimously passed a motion to remove carbon pricing on all forms of heating.

The motion also outlined concerns over certain comments on carbon pricing made by the federal Minister of Rural Economic Development.

“The Assembly expresses deep concern over the

divisive comments made by the Minister of Rural Economic Development, the Honourable Gudie Hutchings, on October 28, in which she blames Canadians living on the Prairies for the unfair choices of the Liberal government,” the motion read.

“The Assembly calls on all parties in the Parliament of Canada to quickly work to remove the federal carbon tax from all forms of home heating for all Canadians.”

The government provided an amendment to the motion - calling for the “carbon tax” to be scrapped altogether - to which the opposition supported.

“What we heard today was agreement from both sides of the house,” said NDP leader Carla Beck.

“The actions taken by the federal government in removing the carbon tax from heating oil something that really applies mainly to Atlantic Canada - is a measure of unfairness that simply can’t go without remedy.”

Are carbon taxes a threat to our food supply chain?

by Sylvain Charlebois, senior director, agrifood analytics lab and professor in food distribution, Dalhousie University Political desperation can be a powerful thing, as we witnessed last week in Ottawa.

The Trudeau government not only put a hold on the carbon tax applied to heating oil for three years, but it also announced a doubling of the rural supplement in the carbon tax rebate program.

In mere minutes, Ottawa not only transformed the carbon tax into a negotiable political lightning rod but also lent credence to those who have voiced doubts about the narratives surrounding carbon pricing.

For starters, the government’s decision to increase rural supplements in the carbon tax rebate program implicitly acknowledges the argument that suggested the rebate might not have been sufficient to cover the associated costs.

It is clear that carbon tax proponents in academic circles are now receiving less attention from Ottawa. As the cost of living becomes a matter of survival for many Canadians, Ottawa is beginning to

heed the concerns of the broader population, not just environmental activists.

Carbon pricing undeniably carries significant weight in Canada, serving as a critical policy to address climate change concerns.

In particular, the agrifood sector faces an arguably substantial threat from climate change, leaving inaction as an undesirable option. Decarbonizing the economy is rapidly becoming a global priority, and Canada must play its part. Despite the unpopularity of carbon pricing in some quarters, it stands out as a relatively lesser evil for the economy. However, when it comes to food, the stakes are notably higher.

Since the Trudeau government has paused the carbon tax for heating oil, a compelling case can be made for examining the impact on our entire food supply.

It is imperative that we conduct a rigorous evaluation of how carbon pricing affects food affordability for Canadians and the long-term competitiveness of our industries. Unfortunately, comprehensive analyses in this regard have been conspicuously lacking, with much

of what we’ve encountered appearing to be influenced by biased narratives, particularly from organizations like the one-sided Smart Prosperity Institute and Climate Change Centre, which often rely on a limited pool of intellectual activists.

Nevertheless, our research team at Dalhousie University, comprised of several researchers, has begun shedding light on the scarcity of research in this critical area.

What needs to be underscored is how the public discourse surrounding carbon pricing and food affordability has been misdirected.

Rather than asking whether the carbon tax is an easy scapegoat for high food prices, the more pertinent question is whether the carbon tax negatively impacts the competitiveness of our food industry.

Quantifying the direct and straightforward impact of carbon pricing on retail food prices is challenging, if not impossible, given the many factors influencing prices, including consumer behaviour and weather. Suggesting that carbon pricing has a direct, linear effect on retail food prices would be misleading. Prices fluctuate for various

reasons, so our primary focus should be on industrial and wholesale prices.

Our research has revealed a significant contrast between industrial and wholesale prices. Industrial prices are notably more susceptible to cost fluctuations, which unquestionably encompass the influence of carbon pricing.

These cost increases within the supply chain are far more quantifiable and trackable. In recent years, the Industrial Product Pricing Index related to food has outpaced the Consumer Price Index for food prices, a trend that has been largely over-

looked.

Carbon pricing has led many to become passive when assessing environmental politics, failing to critically question the figures presented.

For example, the Bank of Canada recently made claims about carbon pricing that went unchallenged. It estimated that only 0.15 per cent of inflation could be attributed to carbon pricing, but this calculation considered only the direct impact of the carbon tax on three products included in the consumer price index: gasoline, heating oil, and natural gas. It did not account for secondround or pass-through

effects.

What was concerning is that not a single reporter questioned how the Bank arrived at this conclusion until Dalhousie University sought this information.

It’s as if everyone was sleepwalking.

While the outright elimination of the carbon tax is not advisable, a temporary pause on any carbon pricing policies affecting our food supply chain should be considered until we gain a clearer understanding of their impact.

Such a measure would be a responsible course of action at this time.

Throne Speech about getting back on track

In wake of the so-called “emergency sitting” to deal with the nonemergency issue of kids pronouns in schools, many were wondering if the Speech from the Throne would show the Saskatchewan Party government had learned some lessons.

After all, the report card is in. It’s less than flattering.

A new Insightrix poll released on the SKoop podcast run by Dale

Richardson (a former Sask. Party social media communication director in Premier Scott Moe’s office) shows only a sixpercentage point spread between the Sask. Party (51 per cent) and the NDP (45 per cent). Most surprisingly, the poll reveals Saskatoon at 65 per cent.

That Insightrix didn’t offer a named third-party alternative (instead, the choice it provided was “another party”) believes the success of the Saskatchewan United Party in the LumsdenMorse byelection. And it was Sask. United’s second-place finish that inspired the need for that pronoun bill.

Another poll has the governing Sask. Party at around 48 per cent, with the NDP at 40 per cent among decided voters. Those numbers would cut the current 46-person government

majority to about 37 Sask. Party seats in the Chamber, while the NDP would vault to 24 seats. In the 61-seat assembly, you need 32 seats to form a majority government.

It’s hardly panic time for the Sask. Party yet.

However, there has been more than a little interest in seeing see what the government approach would now be.

Would it continue down its path of social conservativism and a more “independent” Saskatchewan?

Last year’s throne speech called for a provincial marshal service, provincial income tax collection and the new Saskatchewan First Act to review the impact of federal legislation.

Or would it outline a plan to start addressing some of the more practical problems affecting Saskatchewan?

Based on this year’s throne speech, it seems Moe’s answer was to ensure there was a bit of both.

Yes, it does seem that the Throne Speech delved into political issues like the right to wear a poppy in the workplace on November 11. (What workplace in Saskatchewan prohibits poppy wearing?)

Somewhat similarly, The Saskatchewan First Act to refer the federal Clean Electricity Regulations (following the lead of the Alberta government) and burning need to have a Saskatchewan presence at the COP28 Conference in the United Arab Emirates. All clearly have political overtones.

But a lot of other things in the Throne Speech also clearly fit of “build and protect” like expanding, presumptive cancer coverage for

firefighters, hiking the smoking and vaping age to 19 years from 18 years, or the new Saskatchewan Employment Incentive program to bolster the income of low-income working families with dependent children are clearly about addressing added social concerns.

A provincial sales tax rebate for new homeowners retroactive to last April, a Secondary Suite Program to increase rental availability, a new investment attraction strategy, a new Saskatchewan Jobs Plan, more job opportunities for Indigenous people through the Saskatchewan Indigenous Investment Finance Corporation seem to be about getting the province back on track with concerns of ordinary people.

for Mental Health and Addictions with 500 new addictions treatment spaces; a new Provincial Approach to Homelessness, and 30 new Complex Needs Emergency Shelter spaces in Regina and Saskatoon may suggest the government is getting the message on social concerns.

Health facility projects in Regina, Saskatoon, Prince Albert, Weyburn, La Ronge and Grenfell and new schools in Regina, Saskatoon, Lanigan, Moose Jaw and La Loche are all about meat and potato issues local people want addressed.

Clearly, this Sask. Party government did get off track with is heightened rhetoric during the emergency pronoun sitting.

Last week’s throne speech may be about getting back on track.

I come from haunts of Coot and Hern. I make a sudden sally, I trickle out among the fern and bicker down the valley ...

These old lines by Lord Tennyson in our 1930 school books were maybe our first contact with the river.

Far be it from this “Old Guy’s” intention to explain the geology and history of it here. Somewhere in libraries across the country is a big book about “The Saskatchewan” - part of a series, I think, about the “Rivers of North America” and anyone wanting to catalogue that kind of stuff can find it there.

My only objective in this little thesis is to tell

early days when he had pioneered up there. Stories of unloading lumber from scows that a river boat brought to Racines Landing, lumber that built the first store in Radisson for Sam Amson; bear tracks on the boards every morning; snowshoeing across to the Davis Ranch in the terrible winter of 1907; and building the old Radisson ferry.

To us really young fellows it was really old history!

That river got to be a big part of our young lives, I think, because it influenced everything and everyone around it. When things got bad in the 1930’s when we were growing up and a lot of the province dried up and blew away, it was always there. When all else failed, we could always fall back on it.

Lots of trees for firewood, lots of pasture for the cattle, lots of things to do - even adventures.

We picked berries saskatoon and high bush cranberries and chokecherries, wild raspberries and whatever we found.

We hunted and fished and played and explored

Agriculture in the Classroom Saskatchewan’s (AITC-SK) recently announced the launch of its Acres for Education campaign, an initiative aimed at providing educational opportunities for today’s youth to connect with agriculture.

“The Acres for Education campaign highlights the importance of education in igniting a passion and interest in agriculture. The next generation of consumers and agriculture leaders, innovators, and employees are in classrooms today, and AITC-SK has identified students as the key to a sustainable and resilient agriculture future. By engaging students in agriculture education initiatives, AITCSK strives to inspire them to care about our food system, build understanding and support for modern farming practices, and expose students to the diversity of careers in an exciting and rewarding industry,” detailed a release on the launch.

Our folks, bless them, and the police didn’t like it much but many times as young fellows we snuck down to the river to cool off. It was dangerous, mind you, but we went anyway!

Heck, I remember that one year we waded way out in the river with ropes to bring in logs that were floating down it in the June flood!

As kids, we often sat at the top of the river hills admiring the huge, black poplars that grew in long rows out on the islands.

We knew that they were pretty big because some of the trees on the flats were maybe three-feet through!

It was up in Great Bend a couple of years ago and couldn’t see even one of those big trees left!

Maybe they’ll grow back someday.

One time when I got tired of berry picking, I snuck away from Mother and climbed one of those big trees. I had to climb a smaller tree beside it to get up to its lower branches but once I got going it was easy.

Finally, when the tree trunk had narrowed down to about fourinches or so, I stopped and looked down.

Whoa! Mother, who had seemed so far away in the bushes when I started climbing, now seemed to be nearly at the foot of the tree!

I’ve no idea how high I was but it suddenly occurred to me that the whole landscape was moving. For a second, I thought I was going

to faint until I realized we were swaying in the breeze!

Right about then I noticed a great big wasp nest hanging from one of the nearby branches.

Wasps are not noted for building nests up in tree tops and that swarm must have had a low IQ to build up there. But there they were, crawling in and out of a little hole in the bottom of their nest!

They must have been blind too, I think, because they never paid any attention at all to me as I slithered down that big trunk and started picking berries again!

So we moved away from Great Bend in the spring of 1936. they say that a blind man never misses the sight that he never had and that a deaf person doesn’t miss the music they never heard. But we had grown up with that river being there and surely missed it terribly in the years that followed.

A fellow could keep scribbling on and one about that old home countryside, I think, and never run out of memories. But I’m afraid that most of this stuff is a thing of the past and will be forgotten soon enough anyway.

There is this to remember, though. Mason and many other families, come and go, but that big old river will be there for a long, long time to come.

Let’s hope that the influence of its very presence means as much to future generations as it did to ours!

And let’s hope that the very fact that it is there be an influence on them in their appreciation of the permanence of things and help them forget the rat-race that we older types always fear the future will bring!

Notable Notes

about a small section of that big river and how it affected me!

Oh, to be sure, our folks had appreciated or cursed - it being there, long before we as young fellows ever saw it. But, like I say, this page hasn’t been scrawled from their point of view, only from mine. And I found it in my little old ledger under “M” ... Memories of Great Bend.

In a way, we were kind of lucky, I feel, to have been raised up in that part of Saskatchewan.

To our young minds, although, the rest of the world as we knew it was somewhat dull and featureless. Later on, we found out different. The outstanding presence of that big wide river made Great Bend one of the best places on Earth!

And it was one of the best parts of the world to grow up in for it was parkland country with poplar bluffs and hills, trees and the big wide river!

Of course the long wide waterway had seen a lot of history before we ever knew it, but to us that history began when Dad told us of the

Valerie, Ginny and Kelly were the only ones working. As they were cleaning up the store, a pile of shirts fell to the floor. None of the girls had touched them.

“It’s probably the ghost,” Ginny said.

“Very funny,” said Kelly.

“No, really,” Valerie replied. “He’s a little boy. He likes to play.”

Kelly still didn’t take them seriously, though; she thought they were teasing her because she

was younger. But when she went into the back room to get her keys to go home, she saw a flash of a young boy in the mirror next to her.

When she looked back, her keys had been placed on the floor.

The ghost in the hall

A month after they moved in, one of the roommates realized that her favourite stuffed

teddy bear was missing.

The others all said they hadn’t touched it or seen it.

Weeks went by, and she almost forgot about her teddy when something strange happened.

She opened the door to one of the closets they hardly ever used, and there on the top shelf sat her furry friend. All her

roommates swore they had no idea how it had happened.

Now, whenever the teddy bear goes missing for a few days, she knows exactly where to find it.

Their apartment probably had all these other signs of being haunted too.

The uninvited party guest

There were six of them, and they had all just taken their seats when they heard an unexpected knock at the door. The woman hosting the dinner party opened the door to see who it could possibly be, but no one was there.

“Somebody must have realized they had the

wrong address,” she explained to her guests.

But when they all turned their attention back to the table, there was a seventh plate set.

“Was that there before?” one of the men asked. “I ... I must have set an extra place by mistake,” said the hostess.

She took it back to the kitchen, but when she returned, another plate was there - this time with a glass next

to it. The other guests had been talking among themselves and hadn’t seen anything strange.

But when they realized what had happened, they were shocked and didn’t know what to do.

At this point, they figured the best strategy was to play along, so they filled the empty glass and plate, so as not to upset their mysterious uninvited guest.

Yellowstone National Park was the first national park in the United States.

It is considered to be the first national park in the world. Established in 1872, Yellowstone was named a Unesco World Heritage Site in 1978.

Yellowstone covers a very large area, mostly the northwest corner of Wyoming, extending into Montana and Idaho.

It is comprised of many water retreats, canyons and mountain ranges.

Yellowstone Lake is one of the highest elevation lakes in North America and sits in the middle of one of the largest super volcanos on the continent. The volcano has been considered dormant for many years, but recently experts have seen a growing bit of activity. Over half of the world’s geysers are located in Yellowstone.

Of course, “Old Faithful” is the most famous.

Our next stop after is the City of Laurel.

Laurel, Montana was originally named Carlton and began when William Clark of the “Lewis and Clark” expeditions camped at the mouth of the Clarks Fork River where it meets the Yellowstone.

The name was changed to Laurel because of the abundance of a local shrub found in the hometown of a railroad official from North Carolina.

Today’s population is around 7,500 people and the city is home

to an oil refinery and the Montana Rail links which is the largest rail yard between St. Paul Minnesota and Pasco, Washington.

Laurel had mainly started in the early to mid 1800’s from the gold rush days and was a rest stop for many prospectors looking to find their fortunes.

The real settlement didn’t happen until after 1876 and the Custer Massacre, when the white man felt comfortable coming to the area. Settlers started making their homes in and around 1879. Shortly after in 1886, the post office was established.

If you want to do some exploring Laurel is surrounded by national treasures and historic parks, and features many recreational opportunities.

Rich in railroad history, agriculture has always

been an important economic factor. But oil is the main industry of Laurel with thousands of people in its employ.

One interesting historical fact is that of Riverside Park, located just south. Built as a Prisoner of War camp during the Second World War, many of the buildings that still stand today were constructed by the POWs. Laurel has great accommodations with many eating establishments to satisfy your hunger.

A very progressive city with many new technologies, much of the charm of the “Old West” has been removed, but it still is a great place to stay and roam, steeped in the history of its past but with an eye on the future.

Ranking of LIV players impossible to tell

Taylor Gooch, Cam Smith, Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau are obviously four of the world’s best golfers. But where they rank in the world is up for debate because ... well, there are a few reasons.

Debate Point One: LIV golfers no longer receive world-ranking points because they play on a tour, the Saudi Arabianbased LIV Tour, that does not qualify for such points. Why not? Because

the people who conduct and control the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) system say that LIV tournaments do not follow the OWGR rules of qualification. Such as LIV’s 54-hole, no-cut tournaments.

Debate Point Two: The golf establishment despises, no ... a better word would be “hates”, LIV. The golf establishment hates the idea that some of the world’s best, along with many run-of-the-mill golfers, were presented with gazillion-dollar cheques to join LIV for the supposed betterment of golf globally.

LIV’s efforts to have its golfers receive world-ranking points took another recent hit when the OWGR board (comprised of representatives of the golf establishment which,

remember, despises LIV) again rejected an application to have its players receive worldranking points. These points are valuable because in most cases, they help to determine who gets into the four major championships in golf - the Masters, U.S. Open, the Open Championship, and the PGA. Some LIV players have pre-qualified for some of those events, but the vast majority depend on their status on the world-ranking list to make the field.

Gooch is one example.

He led the LIV Tour in money earnings in 2023, yet is currently ineligible to play in the majors because his world-ranking position has fallen to 201 from 40 at the end of the 2021 season.

But what does it mean

to lead the LIV Tour in money? How does one compare Gooch playing against only 47 others, probably 25 of whom would struggle to make ends meet on the PGA Tour, while World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and the likes of Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm and Colin Morikawa routinely take on fields of 155 others, all of them with proven credentials.

How does a Gooch LIV victory over 10 or 12 great players compare to a victory on the PGA Tour? Might it translate to a top 10? A 21st-place tie?

It’s impossible to tell.

Golf fans know from past performance that Koepka, Gooch, Smith, et cetera, are (or have been) great players but there’s no way to compare them to all golfers in the world unless a comparable

system is established.

Perhaps the OWGR could allow LIV tournaments to offer a lower number of world-ranking points due to strength of field.

For example, winning two LIV tournaments might be equal, when considering strength of field, to, say, a couple of seventh-place finishes on the PGA Tour, and points awarded accordingly.

That way, the world can see how Gooch, Koepka, et cetera, compare to their golf rivals around the world.

Otherwise, LIV golfers are simply barnstormers, collecting only money, not honour or lasting legacy.

Our Presence Supports Faith

In the Second Letter of Paul to Timothy, Saint Paul is dealing with a number of friends in his Ministry who have abandoned him and he states, “Only Luke is with me.”

Paul has been teaching the Good News of Jesus to everyone that he has met. He feels that this is what God wants us all to do. But he is finding that not everyone who listens is a true follower of Jesus’ Way. Demas has abandoned Paul to go to Thessalonica. Crescens has gone to Galatia, and Titus to Dalmatia.

Saint Paul is recognizing that fact which many of us in our world today see regularly ... that many who have heard

the Word of God and have been taught the promises of our Lord, still can wander off.

And so, in the declaration, “Only Luke is with me,” we can feel the stress Paul felt and the value of Luke’s continued presence: the importance of knowing that there are people in the world who support what we believe and are not going to abandon us.

And in that knowledge of support, Paul was able to continue his work of ministry for Jesus.

It is easy to get caught up in the negative instances that happen around us, but all we really need is that one person who stands with us and supports us in our faith at the most difficult of times. This was a blessing for Paul and it speaks volumes about

the faith and the character of Luke.

And this piece of knowledge expresses the extreme intelligence of Jesus, as He sent his disciples out into the world.

We are told that when He sent out His disciples ahead of Him to the communities He was about to visit, He sent them out in pairs. He could have covered twice the amount of ground if He had sent them out individually, but He knew that in our human weakness we need each other’s support.

In going out with a companion, one could never reach a point of depression and defeatism, for one always had someone to lift up one’s spirit.

Saint Luke was this person for Saint Paul as he addressed a multi-

tude of abandonments.

And that is why each of us come together in each of our Church communities each week.

Each of us are called to be a Saint Luke to the Saint Pauls of our community who are down and depressed in the manner in which our faith is being attacked.

We will never know how much support we give to others, in the simple value of our presence in Church with them, but just the same, we attend for their good, as well as our own.

May God Bless you and protect you!

Biggar Arts Council was back on track with live performances following the COVID outbreak and our audiences very much enjoyed the musical presentations at the Majestic Theatre, art exhibits at the Credit Union Gallery in the Museum, school shows and workshops and the extra treat of a dinner out with the family and Christmas show at the Commu-

nity Hall in December.

We continue to struggle a bit with ticket sales through TicketPro and we are thankful to have Ross at deMoissac Jewellers to help out with those of us who are technology challenged!

Several Council members, including three youth members, attended Showcase in October and have chosen eight artists for the 2023-24 season. These youth members continue to keep us on our toes with their input and ideas at meetings and events and initiated the setup of an Instagram account on social media with a QR code posted at the Theatre and the schools for access through that medium.

We have moved to online posting of agendas and meeting minutes for Council members but continue to keep a hard copy in the Secretary’s Minute binder for future reference.

An honorarium was again made to the Museum for continued use of the Credit Union Gallery space for our monthly meetings. Donations were given to Creative Kids and Summer Sizzle Music Camp which provided funding to several Biggar and area music students. The BCS2000 Talent Show received two performance tickets as prizes for competitors and the Museum’s Xmas Magic received support in the form of theatre ticket/concession packages.

These packages were also given to junior helpers for assisting in hanging the art exhibits at the Museum.

Season Ticket packages were received by participants in the Instrumental, Vocal and Piano sections of the Biggar Music Festival competition.

I am thankful for the continuing support of all the members of the Arts Council for their dedication and hard work to this organisation so that we may provide the highest quality of arts and entertainment in this community. Many hours of volunteering are provided and much appreciated by all our supporters as has been noted through the many positive comments from our dedicated patrons.

I look forward to another successful season!

Dr. Marty kicks the tires on retirement Dr. Marty Isinger isn’t hanging up his calving suit and stethoscope just yet.

But the long-time Biggar veterinarian is hoping to be able to rest them a bit.

After 40-plus years as a veterinarian, Isinger has decided to sell his practice and semi-retire in order to spend more time with his family.

Dr. Isinger graduated from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM), opening his Biggar clinic in 1977.

From 1985 to 2000, he operated a satellite clinic in Rosetown.

Throughout this time, he has fully served the veterinary needs of the town and surrounding communities.

Dr. Isinger is a dying breed of veterinarian.

He had the mental and physical attributes to run a single-man practice, treating both large and small animals, 24/7 throughout a lengthy career.

It will take a team to fill those shoes and Corman Park Vet Services (CPVS) is up to the task. The Biggar Veterinary Clinic was purchased by CPVS in July. CPVS is a multiveterinarian practice located just west of Saskatoon, across the track from Saskatoon Livestock Sales.

CPVS offers a fullservice small and large animal practice in its facility which will augment and enhance Biggar’s services. CPVS’s mixed animal practice and veterinarians will be able to provide both routine and emergency

Tara Tenney is a central employee of the Biggar Vet Clinic and will

continue to run the dayto-day operations along with Lindsay Sagon, Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT), who has rejoined CPVS after a maternity leave.

CPVS would like to invite everyone for a week of celebration from November 20-24. Come down and meet the new staff and wish Dr. Isinger well on his next adventure, retirement!
