10,400 new jobs created in 2019 Saskatchewan saw a year of strong job growth in 2019

According to new Statistics Canada data, Saskatchewan saw an increase of 10,400 jobs, or 1.8 per cent, from 2018 to 580,400 jobs.

More than half of that job growth is due to fulltime jobs.

Saskatchewan’s annual unemployment rate was the fourth lowest among provinces at 5.4 per cent and remained below the national rate of 5.7 per

cent in 2019.

“In spite of external headwinds, the creation of 10,400 jobs in 2019 is an indication that Saskatchewan has a robust, diverse and growing economy,” Immigration and Career Training Minister Jeremy Harrison said. “Saskatchewan’s growth plan set an ambitious target of 100,000 new jobs by 2030, last year’s job growth shows that this target is reachable and well on its way of being met.”

December 2019 also marked the 17th consecutive month of job growth on a year-over-year basis.

In December 2019, there were 579,900 people employed, an increase of 6,700 jobs over December 2018.

Saskatchewan’s monthly unemployment rate was 5.7 per cent (seasonally adjusted) in December 2019, down from 5.8 per cent in November 2019.

Other December 2019 highlights: • Record highs for the month of December for labour force (612,000 persons), employment (579,900 jobs), full-time employment (470,000

jobs) and female employment (269,300 jobs); • Off-reserve Aboriginal employment increased by 4,400 jobs (+9.8 per cent) and Aboriginal youth employment was up 3,200 jobs (+45.1 per cent); • Major year-over-year gains were reported for information, culture and recreation up 3,500 jobs; accommodation and food services up 3,500 jobs; and manufacturing up 3,100 jobs; and • Female employment was up 3,100 jobs (+1.2 per cent) and youth employment up 1,500 jobs (+2.1 per cent) compared to last December.

The Biggar Food Bank recorded one of their busiest years, and the success of the 2019 campaign is all due to community involvement.

A total of 126 hampers were given out. In addition we gave out 38 Christmas grocery vouchers which gave 51 adults, 52 children and 20 families a Christmas dinner of their choice.

The community has been very generous in giving to the food bank.

There have been many businesses who have contributed - the Credit Union casual day, The Red Apple food drives, Parrish and Heimbecker who matched their cus-

tomer contributions, Main Street Market and their round up day, several churches, Air Cadets food drive, New U Fitness, One Stop Hardware and a couple of Hutterite colonies.

There were many individuals who also donated either non-perishable items or money gifts.

The Food Bank appreciates Tim Hammond Realty giving us space to house the food bank.

Cold enough for you?

What makes Saskatchewan people hearty and resilient, is the weather.

But ‘Jesus in a grill cheese sandwich’, it is cold outside this week!

Weather is always the go-to conversation starter on the Prairies. But this week, Grandma has the thousand-yard stare of a combat veteran as she retells the harrowing trip to the post office, coffee row, the senior centre, her besties, grocery store . . . but not the pharmacy.

“It’s cold out there, don’t you know?”

It’s cold when you see teenagers walking to school, dressed in a parka, not the usual jean jacket and sweat pants. Those coming back from a warm

southern holiday step off the plane and watch their tan freeze clean off.

The CBC national weatherman crossed the country Tuesday morning, informing one and all of the carnage in Vancouver as motorists deal with snowy roads, the East Coast as they recover from wet and icy conditions. His astute observation of the Prairies . . . “It’s cold. Back to you, Heather. Let’s take a look at sports!”

Guess he’s pretty confident we’ll cope.

We make light of it, but it is a pretty serious and dangerous cold. We bundle up, we curtail our travel, we help those who can’t walk to the store, the

medical clinic, wherever . . . we make the most of this.

It’s where we have chosen to live. We love the Green and White, we complain about the cold, then the heat, usually the mosquitos, we shake our heads when the crops are bad, we have an opinion about the local hockey team. But we deal with them all with aplomb and Prairie grace.

It’s just what it is.

With the weather blanketing us with bitter cold, dress warm (no shame in being a fashion victim), chug back a warm beverage, and help those who need a hand.

And rest assured, this too will pass.

Five ways you can practice kindness at work By being kind, we give those around us hope and inspiration

by Rebecca Schalm Mindfulness is a hot trend in organizational effectiveness, with employee programs popping up in innovators like Google and stalwarts like General Mills.

The demonstrated benefits of mindfulness practices, such as meditation, are mounting. As good and important as mindfulness is (I am both a practitioner and an advocate), it is essentially an internal and self-focused activity.

Work, on the other hand, is a team sport.

For this reason I introduce you to kindness, the natural external complement for mindfulness in the workplace.

Why is kindness important at work?

Most of us spend the

better part of our waking lives at work, locked with colleagues in the pursuit of common goals.

We know what happens at work has a significant effect on how we feel.

If we feel respected and appreciated, we glow. If we feel marginalized and unappreciated, a dark cloud can settle. We can often trace the root of feeling marginalized back to a boss or co-worker who treated us unkindly.

Examples of unkindness are being overlooked, shut out of decision-making, having our opinion disregarded, being unfairly criticized, having work taken away. Unkindness wounds and causes us to withdraw emotionally and physically.

We are all fragile creatures by nature and I do not believe any of us intentionally wants to wound another. By being kind,

we give those around us hope and inspiration. We give the gift we wish others will give us – respect, appreciation, acceptance, friendship. Reflecting on and anticipating the impact our words and actions can cause us to pause and apply kindness more often.

So why is it hard to be kind at work?

For some reason, work seems to bring out the worst in us. It is competitive – we are competing for opportunities and scarce resources.

It is political – we are jockeying for position. It is tedious – we are endlessly explaining and reexplaining, doing and re-doing. It is a lot of pressure – we are striving to live up to expectations and fulfil our potential. These factors, combined, escalate our stress and strain our personal

resources. As a result, we do not always bring our best selves to work. And so, instead of lifting each other up, we end up beating each other down.

In the same way that the benefits of mindfulness are only realized through regular, committed practice, the rewards of kindness are also only realized through intentional and regular practice. Here are five ways you can practice kindness at work: Talk to everyone as if they were your customer. Customers get special treatment. The way you deal with a customer is a practical lesson in how to be kind to your colleagues. Before you engage in a conversation or an action ask yourself how you would respond if that person were your customer.

others are either malicious or incompetent, resist the urge to jump to that conclusion. Instead, operate with the mindset that everyone is striving to do their best. This will shift how you see a colleague and how you respond to a situation.

Follow through.

In other words, do what you said you were going to do. When you make a commitment, others are depending upon you to deliver. When you don’t, you put others at risk of failing to deliver on their promises. So before you say ‘yes’, be kind to others and ask yourself whether you can be counted on to follow through.

Clean up your own mess. When you make a mistake, own it. Finding someone else to blame is committing an act of unkindness. As tempting as it is to shrug off

responsibility, when you stand up and say ‘it was my fault and I’m going to fix it’, you are being kind to everyone around you.

You lead by example and others will respect you for it.

Clean up other people’s mess. Being of service to others is the ultimate act of kindness. While mouthing ‘I told you so’ may give you a moment’s satisfaction, helping someone out of a jam will stay with you forever.

Kindness is an act of self-regulation, an opportunity to put your mindfulness practice to work, at work.

“Poring” (or is that spelled with a “b”?)

Through some heavy reading by a famous author a while back, Y.T., after a few lines, kind of wondered what he was trying to say! Words like “enigmatic”, “candence”, “antiphany” and “caprolite” kept coming up in their descriptions. And although the judges, who presented them with a literary award, must have known what all those big wordsCalvin meant, Y.T. damn Daniels near had to get his dictionary!

Having been at this literary stuff for years, Y.T. should have a fair vocabulary . . . but no!

Many years ago Y.T. marked down a lot of his lifetime feelings in a small book of rhymes. All of them are true and of course not fiction.

For later, because of a stand up comedian, he started sending these pieces into the local paper.

The folks at The Independent haven’t rejected . . . yet! ButKim I’mInglis not so sure about that fiction bit!

Don’t hibernate: 5 tips to stay active in cold weather (NC) Sometimes all you feel like doing in winter is curling up with a cozy blanket on the couch.

But there are many health benefits to being active, including fighting the seasonal blues and getting better sleep. Here are some tips to help you start and keep moving: 1.) Shift your schedule. Having turned back our clocks, we get much more light in the morning and little if any once we get home from work. If you find it difficult to get motivated once it’s dark, switch up your routine and schedule morning workouts instead of evening ones.

2.) Sign up for a new class. Nothing breaks you out of the winter dol-

drums like learning something new. Try a hybrid fitness class, like Aqua Zumba or Yoga HIIT (high-intensity interval training). As an added benefit, a class is a financial and personal commitment, meaning you’ll be more likely to follow through even when you don’t feel like going.

3.) Try active TV watching. If you’re stuck indoors because of a snowstorm or really don’t want to miss your favourite show, incorporate some movement during commercials or slower parts of the program. You can do jumping jacks, skip or jog or skip on the spot for some cardio, and squats, push-ups or burpees for strength training.

4.) Get creative indoors.

If you’re limited in how much time you can spend outside, try finding new, exciting ways to become active indoors. Visit your local library for free workout DVDs, walk around exploring art and culture at a museum or check out a local indoor market or festival.

5.) Reward yourself.

At least half the battle is motivation, and if you set little rewards for yourself when you meet your goals, you’ll be more likely to succeed. Treat yourself to a movie or that deluxe workout gear you’ve been craving. Or try a day at the spa, with therapeutic massages, cleansing facials and invigorating body treatments that revive your senses.

Certainly electric tractors are possible. Technologies exist today.

The question is more about how the cost of electric tractors compare to more traditional power sources? And, do they do the job as efficiently?

The idea of tractors roving fields with essentially long, retractable extension cords attached seems a tad strange, but at one time the mere idea of tractors taking over from horses was seen as fantasy, and I am sure my grandfather, were he alive, would stand in some awe at the sheer size of today’s largest farm tractors.

It is likely, as farming evolves toward electric power tractors, units are going to be smaller, the equipment smaller as

well, with the technology being married to autonomous controls. It seems the most logical to go smaller, but have the ability to program the unit to run without an ‘on the seat’ operator, for much longer hours.

For an industry that has been going in a directly opposite direction, farm units growing everlarger, with horsepower of tractors and the width of equipment growing to match the additional acres. The idea of smaller will be a near paradigm shift for many producers, who have over the last several decades seen tractors get bigger and bigger with every purchase made.

Farmers are also going to question whether electric can deliver the needed power, although that will be a factor dealt with by smaller equipment in my mind. It comes down to seeing two smaller units at work over longer hours covering the same acres, a system that works

depending on the overall associate costs of both systems.

Like most developments, from the growing of canola to zero-till farming, a few farmers will need to be early adopters of the technology, the in-field provers of the concept, and then electric will find its place in the farm sector.

How to save money on groceries (NC) Healthy eating has many benefits and it can be done on a budget.

As an older adult dealing with a fixed income, saving money on healthy food is an important reality.

Taking advantage of sales at the grocery store is an easy way to cut costs. Do this by browsing store flyers and using coupons where possible.

Then plan your meals and snacks around these foods.

To get a better price, buy most of your food from discount grocery

stores rather than convenience stores.

In terms of healthy buys, frozen and canned fruits and vegetables with little-to-no added sugars or sodium are good choices, especially when fresh produce is out of season or more expensive.

Eating meals with plantbased protein foods more often can also be more affordable. These include beans, lentils, chickpeas and other legumes, which are more reasonably priced. Add them to stews, soups and sauces to make your meals go further. Canned fish

such as tuna, salmon and sardines are other less expensive protein foods.

Limit highly processed foods like ready-to-heat meals, as they can cost more and are likely to be higher in sodium and saturated fat.

Be realistic and buy only what you’re going to eat. Otherwise, the food wasted is like throwing away money. Either share large items with a friend or neighbour for extra savings, or buy from bulk bins to get the exact amount you need.

How to shovel snow without hurting yourself (NC) Save yourself a trip to the clinic the next time you shovel the snow from your driveway by following these tips from Dr. Kevin Velicaria, M.D. family medicine: Warm up and cool down. Shovelling snow can be as much of a workout as going to the gym, so prepare your body with a brief warm-up to get your muscles ready. When you’re done, be sure to do some cool-down stretches, especially for your

lower back.

Use the right tools. An ergonomic shovel with a curved handle will help reduce the strain on your back. Avoid choosing one that’s too large because you’re likely to strain yourself if you try to move too heavy a load.

Be sure to also wear footwear with good grip to prevent falls.

Bend your knees. Protect yourself from back injuries by bending your knees when lifting any

amount of snow. Try to avoid twisting your body as you work and you’ll keep your lower back happy.

Take your time. Don’t try to do everything at once. Shovelling too much, too fast usually leads to injury. Pace yourself and do only as much as your body can take. If necessary, come back at another time to clear the rest.

Why exercising in winter is so important (NC) When it gets cold outside, our natural instinct is to stay indoors, but physical activity is a great way to keep off the weight gain that comes naturally at this time of year and banish the blues that can come with the shorter days. “Like most creatures, our bodies are designed to cope with the cold of winter by staying inside and packing on the calories to keep ourselves warm,� says Dr. Kevin Velicaria, M.D. family medicine. “Couple that

with any recent holiday over-indulgences and you have a recipe for weight gain that’s hard to get rid of come spring.

Fortunately, staying active helps regulate the amount of calories that you take in during the winter and has the added benefit of boosting your mental health by fighting off the winter blahs.

Velicaria adds that going outside also exposes our bodies to the sun for some much-needed vitamin D. Another advantage comes from the cold-and-

flu fighting benefits that exercise offers. Studies have shown that regular exercise boosts our immune systems, helping our bodies fight off any germs we’re exposed to at this time of year.

Still, Velicaria cautions us to pace ourselves. In a rush to accomplish new year’s resolutions, he’s seen many gyms across the nation fill up with people who try to do too much, too quickly and wind up getting hurt.

It’s a New Year, a new decade and it’s going to be a good one!

What was happening in Biggar 100 years ago?

1920 - The whole world is still reeling from the aftermath of years of war . . . WWI, the Great War, the war to end all wars . . . gees, will we ever learn?

On January 1, 1920 the headline on the Biggar Independent read . . . Moonshiners Fined. I guess that put a damper on some New Year’s Eve parties! Biggar was actually dry (no alcohol) until 1935! The population of Biggar was 1,671 and there was plan for a proposed Union Hospital.

Here at the Museum we have a video that shows the history of the churches, schools and hospitals, there is all kinds of other information to see on this as well, in the comfort of our Majestic Theater Exhibit.

What else happened in 1920: In February the ladies enjoyed their first bonspiel. In March the Biggar Meat Market opened next to Randall’s Bakery (about where the Biggar and District Credit Union is now). An electric washer was going to be demonstrated as well.

using only elbow grease?

No hot running water, no spinners, no dryers, gees.

We sure have it good now! Thanks to the past generations who figured out how to make life a little easier!

In April Mr. McLaren purchased a valuable corner, Main and Second Avenue, from S. Gould.

That must have been where our post office now stands because the Eamon Block was built in 1919, the CIBC Bank (Designs by Ann) in 1910, and Nevada’s Cutting Room building was owned by Mr. Frampton, from the Biggar Independent then.

In May 1920, bandits attempted a robbery at Vance. Vance doesn’t even exist now! But by June those robbers were

committed to trial! The year ended with the announcement that the Co-op Creamery was coming to Biggar!

All these headlines have been compiled by Rae Chamberlain. He has read the old newspaper, jotted down the headlines, the births, deaths and marriages and then typed up all this information and created booklets that are on sale at the museum. Chug-a-block full of information and very interesting for sure!

The museum staff have been putting all our photos on the SAIN Database at the University of Saskatchewan. I went in and found a few photos from 1920, I sure hope you get some pleasure out of these. Biggar as it used to be, in days before today.

OBITUARIES

Rev.Ian Nestegaard Paul On the 12th day of Christmas the Rev. Ian Nestegaard Paul died surronded by love. Ordained on the same day as his spouse Brenda in July of 1999, Ian served congregations of the ELCIC in both the Saskatchewan and British Columbia Synods as well as Anglican congregations in the Dioceses of Saskatoon, Qu’appelle, British Columbia and New Westminister.

Ill health led to his retirement in the fall of 2016. Ian is survived by his best friend, partner and soul mate, the Rev. Brenda Nestegaard Paul and thier children daughter Bronwyn of Port Alberni, BC, elder children Jordan(David) of Burnaby, BC, Ian (Haggar) of Tel Aviv, Israel, and Yvonne (Jimmy) of Taipel, Taiwan: 8 grandchildren, elder brother, numerous nieces and nephews, friends and family. Funeral held January 14th at St.Pauls Anglican Church in Nanaimo BC.
