If Henri Matisse was right, you must be brave when it comes to art. You must also be brave to show your work, and for three Biggar artists, this past Saturday was a great chance to be brave. A yard art drive-by show with Michaela Hoppe, Diane Larouche Ellard and Cindy Hoppe was held, May 30, featuring all their current works, all in the relative comfort of their yards. A wonderful day of socializing (with distancing), looking at art, talking to artists and those that love art. Let’s hope they continue to be brave and do this again!

Canada’s largest helium purification facility to be built in Saskatchewan Saskatchewan will soon be home to the largest helium purification operation in Canada.

The new facility will be constructed by North American Helium Inc. (NAH) near Battle Creek, Saskatchewan. It is expected to be in-service by July, 2021, with construction starting in October, 2020.

“Helium production in Saskatchewan is set to take off,” Energy and Resources Minister Bronwyn Eyre said. “The building of this purification facility by North American Helium will enable the province to scale helium production and important export capacity. In Saskatchewan’s Plan for Growth, we committed to developing this industry and have implemented strong policies to support new investment just like this.”

“We are fortunate to be

operating in a jurisdiction with a supportive regulatory structure, favourable geology for helium production and a skilled workforce,” North American Helium’s Chairman and CEO Nicholas Snyder said. “The government has shown a commitment to the development of this industry in Saskatchewan, which will contribute new production needed to replace depleting natural-gaslinked helium sources in North America. Our Battle Creek project demonstrates that reliable long-term production of helium can be created from non-hydrocarbon sources, which means a smaller environmental footprint while still benefiting from the expertise developed in Saskatchewan’s oil service industry.”

“This project will bring new jobs and economic

growth to the southwest region, a part of Saskatchewan that prides itself on resource development and economic growth,” Cypress Hills MLA and Legislative Secretary for Energy and Resources Doug Steele said. “The construction of this plant in the Battle Creek area signals the world-class investment climate Saskatchewan offers and we acknowledge North American Helium for their significant work in the region.”

Recent regulatory amendments introduced an expanded Provincial Sales Tax exemption for exploratory and downhole drilling activity, which includes drilling for helium. Saskatchewan has a stable and highly competitive 4.25 per cent royalty rate for helium. In addition, the NAH helium project has been conditionally

approved by the Ministry of Energy and Resources for the Oil and Gas Processing Investment Incentive, which provides new or expanded helium processing and liquefaction facilities with a 15 per cent transferrable royalty credit based on capital expenditures. The North American Helium project has also been approved through the environmental assessment process.

Canada has the fifthlargest helium resources in the world, with significant underground reserves in Saskatchewan. Global demand for helium is increasing, as a global supply shortage has resulted in helium prices rising more than 160 per cent since 2017.

Over the last five years, just under 20 wells have been drilled in Saskatchewan (the vast majority of which were in southwest Saskatchewan), specifi-

cally targeting helium.

The Saskatchewan Geological Survey continues to analyze around 88,000 oil and gas wells across the southern half of the province to determine how many have a helium occurrence of greater than one per cent, which is a good indicator of via-

bility.

Helium is used in various applications, including medical research and diagnostic testing, digital technologies, semiconductors, fibre optics, nuclear power facilities, rocket systems, welding and balloons.

by Cpl. Dereck Crozier, Biggar Detachment, NCO IC There were 56 calls for service this past week.

Sixteen traffic safety violations were noted and there were another 13 various driving complaints.

One impaired driver was removed from Highway 4

north, a grey Jeep Grand Cherokee identified as 058LUE was found driving through seeded crop in the Eagle Creek area and a grey Chev Cobalt identified by 471LUU, was found abandoned in someone’s field near Straun and removed.

We received five mischief calls, four bylaw

calls, one suspicious vehicle, two commercial break and enters and four reports of theft.

More graffiti mischief this week was located on the side of a semi that was parked along First Avenue West in Biggar, and we continue to seek anyone with any information about the incident.

There was a theft of a port-a-potty from a graveyard near Sonningdale.

A restoration group had this placed there for when they are working onsite.

The group would appreciated whoever relieved them of their facility to please return it, it was not abandoned or forgotten.

Seeding advances Favourable weather in the province this week meant substantial seeding progress in all regions. Eighty per cent of the crop is now seeded in Saskatchewan, slightly ahead of the fiveyear average of 78 per cent (2015-2019) for this time of year, according to the weekly crop report for May 19 to 25.

Crops have started to emerge in many areas of the province. The southwest is the farthest along, with 92 per cent of the crop seeded in the region.

There is 84 per cent seeded in the southeast, 80 per cent seeded in the west-central, 75 per cent seeded in the northwest, 73 per cent seeded in the northeast and 69 per cent seeded in the east-central.

Many parts of the province received some rainfall this week, with the western regions receiving the most. The Cando area received the highest amount of rain this week with 100 millimetres. While rain delayed

seeding for some farmers in the west-central and northwest regions, it was welcome to help support crop and pasture growth. Windy conditions throughout the province have continued to dry the topsoil, but rain showers helped maintain moisture conditions.

Cropland topsoil moisture is rated as three per cent surplus, 78 per cent adequate, 17 per cent short and two per cent very short. Hay and pasture land topsoil moisture is rated as three per cent surplus, 71 per cent adequate, 23 per cent short and three per cent very short. Pasture conditions are rated as five per cent excellent, 52 per cent good, 33 per cent fair, nine per cent poor and one per cent very poor.

Earlier seeded crops have started to show good emergence, but cool overnight temperatures have slowed growth in some areas. Farmers are starting post-emergence weed control in earlier seeded

fields that could not be sprayed previously due to the wind. In general, crops are in line with normal development stages for this time of

year. Windy conditions in some areas have reduced topsoil moisture, resulting in delayed emergence of some oilseeds.

Trump needs to be a leader in face of racial woes It’s an opportunity for a leader to be a leader.

But if you follow the high school antics of “The Donald”, well . . . swing and a miss.

While rioters need to be brought to justice - many of whom don’t really care about Black Lives and are just capitalizing on some mayhem - the U.S. President needs to step up and show leadership, not his ability to fingerpoint and allocate blame.

In Donald’s world, he’s doing a bang-up job. In the real world, he’s campaigning, and allowing a nation to fall into an abyss it may never climb out of.

Entire sections of U.S. cities look like war zones. In the coming days, the fallout from George Floyd’s death have brought to light the combativeness of the president and his inability to be a leader who can bring peace. One U.S. police chief has even asked Trump to “Keep your mouth shut”, as the vitriol spewing from the president’s pie-hole is nothing more than gasoline on an already out of control fire.

He claims to be a “president of law and order”, bombarding peaceful protesters at the White House with tear gas and flash bang grenades so he can photo-op a burned out church.

Now, no friend of Canadian pipelines, “Diamond” Joe Biden was making political hay Tuesday morning, condemning Trump by saying he “won’t traffic in fear and division”.

Biden addressed systemic racism and exuded empathy with protesters - a big contrast to Trump’s toxic approach.

We can “tisk, tisk” the Donald, because here in Canada, we too must look in the mirror. Our record on racism needs to be addressed.

And while Trump continues to roll around in his own rhetoric filth, our hands need to be cleaned. Trump is a lesson in looking in the mirror and recognizing what not to do.

Unfortunately, it is a lesson that will be hard-learned and paid for in blood.

Some day soon, we have to stand up to China

by Doug Firby Diplomacy is a dirty business. When two countries are trying to build or repair a relationship, they often resort to tactics that are illegal, immoral, mendacious or just generally offensive to our sense of what’s right and wrong.

Just ask the two Michaels.

Diplomat Michael Kovrig and businessman Michael Spavor have been in prisons in China for more than 400 days each, even though neither has been charged with a crime and the government of that country has provided no evidence that they broke any laws.

They were in solitary confinement for months and haven’t had a chance to see their families, although of late they have been allowed to talk to their lawyers.

Their crimes?

They just happened to be in the right place at the wrong time when China

was looking for pawns.

As readers know, it’s accepted as fact that the two Michaels were nabbed in retaliation for the arrest of Huawei’s chief financial officer, Meng Wanzhou. RCMP took her into custody in Vancouver in December 2018 on a U.S. extradition warrant. The process of getting her to the U.S. so she can stand trial on charges of corporate fraud is dragging on.

It’s widely assumed that the problems of the Michaels could be resolved quickly if only Canada would set Meng free.

Here’s the dilemma: Canada has an extradition treaty with the U.S., its closest neighbour and largest trading partner.

Freeing Meng would require our country to not just violate that agreement, but also allow politicians to do an end-run around the legal process.

Not only is it just not

how we operate, it would also put a chill on already shaky Canada/U.S. relations during the Donald Trump era.

Yet standing up to China is not an easy thing. That communist country is quickly overtaking the U.S. as the dominant world economic power.

It buys our wood pulp, oil seeds and grains, ores, mineral fuels and oil, spending as much as $48 billion annually on those goods.

In short, Canadian producers have come to rely on China as both a very important market and a way to diversify our markets. As Albertans know all too well with their fossil fuels, selling goods only to the U.S. makes us price-takers – we have to take whatever price they offer us.

So it’s gut-check time.

Do we stay the course with Meng, knowing full well that two innocent Canadians will pay the price

– possibly by facing many more years of unwarranted incarceration? Do we stay the course, knowing that the strained relations will likely lead to further retaliation through China’s boycott of our goods?

Do we stay the course, knowing that it will seriously set back our goal of market diversification?

These are painful decisions with far-reaching implications.

However, one also has to think of the consequences of giving in to China’s demands. If we were to release Meng, what would that say about our national resolve? How could we not expect that the next time a dispute arose, China wouldn’t just grab a couple more convenient hostages? Or would China be emboldened to push Canada around even more aggressively?

who, from 1937 to 1940, pursued a strategy of trying to work with Adolf Hitler. They figured just one more concession might be all that was needed to satisfy the Nazi leader.

History shows us that such cowardly thinking was a tragic failure and did indeed only embolden a megalomaniac bent on world domination.

When Britain finally drew a line in the sand with Hitler, it knew that it was about to enter into a brutal war for which it was underprepared and could quite possibly lose.

And yet it realized it had no choice.

Today, Canadians must also accept that appeasing China is a strategy that can’t end well. We must be prepared to stand our ground and face whatever economic and political consequences may follow.

We must be clear that China is doing many

things wrong – violating its citizens’ basic human rights, steamrolling over Hong Kong and threatening the future of Taiwan.

Its 5G technology may in fact be a Trojan Horse that could compromise the security of Canada’s communications systems.

And it’s playing dirty tricks on a middle power – Canada – because it thinks it can.

It’s time to stand our ground. Do we have the leaders with the courage to do so?

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has tried to stay cool – ragging the puck, to use an old hockey metaphor – hoping that some break will develop if he just holds on long enough.

He can’t do that much longer. The time to take a stand is approaching fast.

“I need three volunteers . . .

You, Yew and Ewe!” Everytime I check in those L&T ( Life and Times) books of mine I feel called on to describe the index letter at the top of the page.

Mebbe in a way this is Chef Dezbecause after all, wrong the only letters most of us care about are the ones as we use everyday.

It is a kind of history lesson though and even if it doesn’t tell one how to fix anything it does make a person look educated!

Ahem!

AccordingMasonto Bob Professor Mason, the history of the letter “U”!

The book sez that the ancient Egyptians (3000 B.C. or so) had a slingshot shaped (some alliteration, eh?) heiroglyphic, and it is anybody’s guess how they pronounced it.

Later, the Phoenicians (a Semitic race) took that “Y” shaped symbol and pronounced it “Waw”.

My book also sez that the letters F, V, W and Y all were derived from the letter “waw”!

Next, the Greeks took a Bruce crack Penton at this borrowing bit by taking that Y shape and calling it “Upsilon”.

The Romans (always out to improve things!) abolished the stem of that Y which left the letter V, which they pronounced as both U and V. Finally (wait for it!) about 900 A.D. some common sense types started using the letter “U” much as we do now!

End of Lesson!

Incidentally, in the army a lot of the passwords we used had the letter “V” in them, which most German-speakers pronounced as a “W” although some of our P.O.Ws (Prisoners Of War) spoke way better English than we did!

And I can still envision that inscription at R.M.C.: “BLOV OVT YE BUGLES OVER THE RICH DEAD”.

Upsetting the one-way: One of the most popular agricultural implements around when Y.T. was farming, was a disc type machine called a “OneWay”. I suppose there Dez around someareChef people where who know who all made them, ours happened to be made by the “Cocks h u t ” company, but many farmers had one.

F o r y e a r s , down on the flat land of 34.11 we pulled a 10-foot One-Way up and down the Bob Mason fields and never ever heard of one being upset!

And then we started farming some land up in the hills!

Driving the old Massey 44, Y.T. was pulling his outfit up a steep slope one day when the tractor dug down into the soft earth and got stuck. The draw pin was jammed tight and Y.T. couldn’t even unhitch the One-Way and get out.

Y.T. looked deep in his toolbox, found a hacksaw there and cut the draw pin off . . . sweat, sweat!

I almost cried at the Kim Inglis time, but always laugh now when I remember what happened next!

When the pin finally parted, the whole OneWay that Y.T. was pulling behind, fell over backward and dumped its box-load of precious grain down the slope!

Oh, I got everything out of there alright, but the next time I sowed that slope coming down!

Y.T. quit farming many years ago but the memory of that upside down OneWay has never left!

Underhill cuts my hair!: Believe it or not, Y.T. once had a dandy head of hair! So nice in fact, that one time when Y.T. got his greying neighbour to cut it (A.C. Underhill) he wouldn’t help but put me down a bit!

Oh, A.C. did a good job of haircutting, but all of a sudden he yanked out one of my hairs and held it in front of me.

are starting to get grey!”

Y.T. was only 18 at the time and felt kind of bad about that, but A.C. yanked out another hair and showed me.

On our way home, my CalvinBill Daniels brother told me A.C. had pulled out one of my fine brown hairs, but had shown me one of his own white ones!

Mebbe that is why mine all went so fast, eh?

U. of S. jobs: Before he joined the army, Y.T. worked for a while at the University of Saskatchewan. He likes to up his image a little by claiming he attended the “College of Manual Labour” Under “Dean” Gavin Orr, the maintenence foreman!

Well, it does sound like Immanuel College eh?

Talk about greenhorns!

On my first stint as a night-watchman Y.T. visCalvin Daniels ited every punch-clock station a dozen times!

Orr sure laughed when he saw my clock-card the next morning!

We did a lot of different jobs there including shovelling off the Presidents sidewalk in the winter. What a revelation it was to be invited in for coffee!

I don’t know what all courses young people take up at that university now, but it seemed to me on my night-watchman’s rounds in June that they studied a lot of biology!

Utensils Stolen: Just this Inglis side of Kim Veen in Germany we took a whole bunch of P.O.Ws (Prisoners Of War!) and one of them had a set of utensils that I had never seen before.

A knife, fork and spoon that all fit together with an engraved swastika on the knife handle! He gave them to me and I used them for months.

When we came home, someone must have seen them and stole them from my kitbag. They were a real keepsake!

Well, we won the war, if that is any consolation!

Urguhardt: Bill and Y.T. were in the army together, 1944-1945. He was a darn good guy and Y.T. has mentioned him in this column more than once. He was tall, blond, well built and good looking, also an excellent basketball player. Whenever we moved to a new camp he was always on their team.

L.S.R’s (Lake Superior Regiment) and when they went into the Dutch town of Coevouden, right on the German border, during the Liberation celebrations, a little girl climbed up on one of the tanks and accidentally fired a .50 Browning machine gun right into the crowd.

Bill lost a leg in that mess, and of course, never played basketball again!

When Clarence and Y.T. went to the coast, we called at the Legion in his hometown where they told us they’d never heard of him!

Uncle Will: Uncle Will Mason always appealed to me as the kind of guy all of us should know!

He was very generous with everybody and even seemed to enjoy being taken advantage of! Uncle Will was a very successful family man, and whenever he had money in his pocket, always shared it with them!

He never became a millionaire, nor does he have the biggest stone in his local graveyard.

But he and his ways are some of our finest memories!

Visiting June 1936, remember when . . .

by Delta Fay Cruickshank for the Biggar Museum and Gallery I am reading a book right now, and it is set in Cornwall, England in 1936.

At this time in Europe, in the newspapers there are rumblings of dangerous times coming. It got me thinking about what was happening in Biggar at that time.

So off to the Historical Timeline book, 19311960. Rae Chamberlain has read every newspaper and complied books consisting of the major headlines, obits, marriages and births et cetera.

Let me tell you, they sure come in handy. The books are in the gift shop if you would like your very own copy. I also went to the Biggar Encyclopedia as well . . . really there is so much information out there about Biggar thanks to Rae. I then went to the microfilm and found 1936, the June 4 edition of The Independent.

From all the information I found, Biggar did not seem to be aware of the rumblings in Europe, or certainly were not reporting it. But seeding was happening, and Main Street stores were having sales.

At Hock and Packers (across the street where Stepping Stones is) they too were selling Ladies Silk Dresses, but they were three cents more than Golden Rule. At Hock and Packers one could also buy groceries, they boosted a complete line of Fresh Fruit and Vegetables. On that day they were having a 25-cent sale, Butter – 2 lbs for .25 cents. Coffee was 25 cents for a lb. Do not forget it is all relative, the prices of the dresses and groceries seem low, but how much were the

people making per hour?

Conductors in Toronto at that time made 60 cents per hour, unskilled labourers were making 30 cents per hour.* At the Majestic Theatre the Will Rogers movie “Steamboat Round the Bend” was playing Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings, plus there was a Saturday afternoon matinee.

The other grocery stores were Millers Groceries and James Brothers.

R.H. Virtue, advertising “next to Mooney’s Hardware” were having their “Third Great Anniversary Sale…where you could loosen your purse strings and bank your savings.”

I have no idea what they were selling, maybe like a liquidation world type of store. Biggar Bakery had cookies for sale.

Doctor W.D Brace was on Third Avenue East and Dr. J.H. Lee was in the Frampton Building.

The Royal Alex had rooms to rent on Second Avenue East, they also had a dray service.

On Friday June 12, 1936, an Old Time Dance featuring the Ross Mann Orchestra was happening in Miller’s Hall. Miller’s Hall and Garage sat on the site where the museum is now. Wilson Lake Beach was having a dance too, with prizes for 18 dancers!

I wondered what the fashions looked like in June 1936, so I went online and looked up the Eaton’s Spring and Summer catalogue and found women’s dresses. I think they are very nice, finally shorter, nipped in the waist, it must be because

of the corsets a woman could buy at the Golden Rule.

Chef Dez On Cooking – Rosemary Maple Bacon Jam... Yes, I said Bacon Jam Many people sing the praises of bacon, and I am no different.

What happens however, when you take that wonderfully complex flavour and turn it into jam? True bliss.

Recently I featured my recipe for Rosemary Maple Bacon Jam at a local fair and the popularity of this recipe was overwhelming . . . so I decided to share it with you.

The best tip I can give

you is to use premium bacon from a butcher for best results. This is not a recipe for your “run of the mill” grocery store brand.

Don’t get me wrong, you can still do it with regular bacon, but the results are much better with premium bacon. Also, this recipe is not a place for dried rosemary. Fresh rosemary full of wonderful essential oils is the way to go.

Oh, and one last note

on the ingredients, please use pure maple syrup and not regular pancake syrup.

Somebody asked me “what do you put bacon jam on?” I replied “Everything!” Seriously though this is awesome on crackers with goat cheese, pizzas, bruschetta, sandwiches, and almost anywhere you would like a sweet and savoury concoction.

Rosemary Maple Bacon Jam Recipe created by Chef Dez (chefdez.com) “The perfect topping for almost any appetizers you may be thinking of offering to your guests, like bruschetta, cheese and crackers, canapés, et cetera. My favourite is paired with soft unripened goat cheese (chevre) as the creamy tanginess is the perfect match for this sweet complex concoction.”

1 pound bacon slices, cut into 1/4 inch pieces; 2 medium onions, quartered and sliced thin; 6 to 8 garlic cloves, chopped; 1 cup black coffee; 2/3 cup packed brown sugar; 1/2 cup maple syrup; 1/3 cup apple cider vinegar; 1 tbsp finely chopped fresh rosemary.

1. Add the bacon pieces to a large heavy bottomed pan or dutch oven. Turn the heat to medium/high and cook the bacon until almost crisp (browned and cooked, but not crisp), reducing the heat to medium as it starts to turn brown, stirring occasionally, approximately 20 minutes. Remove the cooked bacon with a slotted spoon and set aside on paper towels to drain.

2. Remove all but one tablespoon of the bacon fat from the pan. Turn the heat to medium and stir in the onions to the tablespoon of bacon fat followed by the garlic. Cook, stirring occasionally, until this onion/garlic mixture is softened and slightly browned, approximately five to seven minutes.

3. Add the coffee, brown sugar, maple syrup, vinegar, rosemary, and reserved bacon. Stir to combine and increase the heat to medium/high to bring to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium/low and simmer uncovered for approximately 90 minutes until the mixture is syrupy and has a jam like texture.

4. Transfer this mixture to a food processor and pulse a few times until the consistency/texture is what you desire. Will last up to three weeks in your refrigerator.

Rail still an inpediment to wheat It is interesting how well the Canadian system can move grain when the commodity isn’t competing with other higher value loads as much as normal.

It was reported recently Canada set a new weekly wheat export record in week 40 of the 2019-20 campaign, according to the Canadian Grain Commission. According to a Western Producer article, terminal elevators shipped 926,000 tonnes of wheat and durum, shattering the previous record of 691,000 tonnes set the same week the previous crop year.

They inspire sensational headlines, documentaries, and true-crime series.

Women make up just 15 per cent of murderers in the United States, and their motives differ wildly from their male counterparts. While life insurance money was the primary motive, these women showed pure ruthlessness and a complete disregard for life.

Here are five of the most sinister black widow murderers ever.

Helen Golay and Olga Rutterschmidt These two women developed a get-rich-quick scheme by taking out life insurance policies on homeless men.

Golay and Rutterschmidt met the men through a church program for homeless men. They gave them an apartment and groceries while taking out millions of dollars of life insurance policies.

Then they ran the men over, framing their deaths to look like a hit-and-run accident. Together they collected over $2 million before their arrest.

Kelly Cochran Cochran was just following through on a wedding night pact with her husband, Jason Cochran.

They promised each other, if either of them were unfaithful, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d kill the lover together.

She told police that as her marriage became more and more abusive; she found love with a co-worker, Christopher Regan. When her husband discovered the affair, she invited Regan to their home, where Jason shot him.

Together they dismembered the body, put it in garbage bags, and dumped it in the northern Michigan woods. Kelly then gave her husband a fatal dose of heroin and strangled him to death.

Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s now in prison serving sentences for both murders.

Evelyn Dick Even in the 60s, a media storm surrounded the trial of Evelyn Dick, also called the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Torso Killerâ&#x20AC;?.

A group of schoolchildren found the headless and limbless body of Dickâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s estranged husband in the woods of Ontario.

Police soon keyed into his spouse as the suspect, whose own father helped her to cut up the body, burning the arms, legs, and head of John Dick in his home furnace.

A jury handed Evelyn Dick an acquittal for the murder of John Dick on a technicality. But her father was convicted of being an accessory after the fact for dismembering the body.

During the investigation into his crime, authorities discovered the mummified remains Evelyn

Dickâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s infant son in the basement of his home.

Dick spent 11 years in prison for her babyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s murder and disappeared from the public eye after her release.

Mary Elizabeth Wilson The â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Merry Widow of Windy Nookâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t put much effort into hiding her schemes from friends and family.

Over two years, she married four times, securing inheritance from each husband before murdering them.

When police exhumed the bodies of the men, they all contained traces of insecticide.

Betty Lou Beets Then-governor George W. Bush paused his presidential campaign to witness the execution of Betty Lou Beets.

She was a 62-year-old grandmother at the time the death sentence was carried out, found guilty of murdering both her fourth and fifth husband by shooting them in the back of the head multiple times.

She was the second woman executed by the state of Texas.

Her son turned her in for the murders, telling police he helped her to bury the bodies on her Texas properties.

Both her son and daughter testified against her at trial.

Improve 100 rural roads by 2023 The Provincial Government is investing $28 million to improve rural roads in Saskatchewan Rural Municipalities (RMs). Thirty-six RMs will receive funding this year, which will cover up to 50 per cent of total project costs to a maximum of $500,000.

This is the first year of a three-year plan with Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM) to improve 100 rural roads through the Rural Integrated Roads for Growth Program (RIRG). â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our government is investing in infrastructure that keeps our rural economies growing and improves safety,â&#x20AC;? Highways and Infrastructure Minister Greg Ottenbreit said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This program supports rural infrastructure in addition to assisting with the economic recov-

ery from the COVID-19 pandemic.â&#x20AC;?

In addition to helping RMs address their infrastructure challenges, the RIRG Program also supports agriculture, energy, forestry and other ruralbased sectors. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Many rural areas are in dire need of investments to help alleviate the stress on their current infrastructure,â&#x20AC;? Formerly known as the Municipal Roads for the Economy Program, the RIRG will continue

to assist RMs with the costs of constructing and upgrading municipal roads, bridges and culverts to support growth.

One of the changes is allowing RMs to complete construction projects over two years.

Some rural road projects have been approved already, so work can begin this construction season. A second intake for additional projects will begin soon.

The Government of Saskatchewan has invested more than $9.8 billion in highways infrastructure since 2008, improving more than 15,500 km of Saskatchewan highways.

Another $300 million in highways stimulus funds will be invested over the next two years to stimulate Saskatchewanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s economic recovery.

In Anchorage, between June 8 and July 5 there are 24 hours of daylight, and Fairbanks has more than 70 days with 24 hours of daylight.

Literally all day light for so, so many days, and this is some people’s reality.

Or night. Yup, that’s what you get if you live in Barrow, Alaska, where the sunset sets for the last time, for 83 whole days, before they see sunlight again.

To visit them, you’ll have to go by boat, and if you don’t have your own, a nearby ferry will take you.

These settlements are lashed together with ropes, creating entire communities atop the water. In fact, most of the people who live here never set foot on the actual land.

There are lots of visitors to the floating villages and tourist attractions for

them as well including a crocodile farm and snake girls. There are floating bars, restaurants, a market, and even a school.

A THOW Tiny House A THOW, or tiny house on wheels, also known as a house you can take anywhere, is weird, and awesome. Tiny houses may be too small for most but how cool would it be to take your house and literally make home, anywhere?

Living Underground Let’s admit it, there are a lot of advantages to not having to deal with people (I’m a people person but let’s be honest, COVID taught us all that we don’t need others are much as we thought we would, but yet, that we want to be around them more than ever.)

Anyhow, at least half the town’s population lives underground to avoid the summer heat and brutal winter that Coober Pedy, Australia experiences.

This is one of the weirdest places, but would be awesome to (temporarily) experience living underground.

Mask Land If you think masks during Corona is bad, for a short amount of time and not even required everywhere, imagine if you had to have an actual gas mask daily and how that would be. Ugh! After the 2000 eruption of Mt. Oyama, south of Tokyo, the 2,800 residents of Miyake-jima Island are required to carry a gas mask with them at all times. They don’t have to wear it constantly but are alerted when the noxious gas is high via sirens.

After the eruption, there was a mass evacuation.

Five years later when it was lifted, people started moving back home but undergo regular health checks and age restrictions in certain areas even today.

Tent City, New Jersey It’s not a permanent residence or even long-term, but these multi-colored fabrics have been taking over this small section of Ocean Grove, New Jersey for over 150 summers now.

It all started with devote Methodists in town for community meetings but today is more so focused on some serious R&R super close to the beach.

Harley Dean Custer

Resident of Battleford District Care Centre was born on December 1, 1931 in Sonningdale, SK and was raised on the farm at Baljennie, SK. He moved to Biggar and was hired on the CNR as a Trainmen/Conductor at 20 years old. Harley married Nona I Besse on May 2, 1953 in Biggar, SK. After working for many years in Biggar, Harley & Nona moved to Kamloops, B.C. for a few years. After retirement Harley and Nona moved to Battleford. Harley’s hobbies included: golf, piloting his airplane, downhill and cross-country skiing, woodworking, playing ball and wintering in Yuma, AZ; he belonged to the Biggar Flying Club and Biggar Elks. Harley passed away peacefully from complications of pneumonia at the Battlefords Union Hospital on May 25, 2020.

Left to cherish Harley’s memory are his loving family: daughter, Cindy and Jim Kanz; grandchildren: Bobbi Jean Kanz of Battleford, SK and Jamie and Blair Michaud of North Battleford, SK; great-grandchildren: Jacob, Kalyn, Paige, Janae and Luc; sisters: Connie Rayner and Donna Hawtin; brother, Barry Custer; brothers and sisters-in-law: Doreen Silvernagle, Gord and Rita Besse and Don and Jean Ruehlen; uncle, Vernon Custer; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Feb. 14,1925 – May 20,2020 With deep sadness the family of Jean Taylor announce her peaceful passing on May 20,2020 at the age of 95 years. Always loved and forever remembered by her daughter Donna Peterson (Gary), grandsons Shawn (Jodi), Darcy (Janelle) and great grand children Taylor, McKenna, Jacob, Sam and Nora, sister-in-law Lynne Weir, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Alvin in 2012.

Jean was born Feb. 14,1925 on her parents farm near Leney, SK., married Alvin Taylor in 1945 and resided in the community of Perdue until 2017 when she moved to Edmonton, AB. to be closer to family.

She was a proud advocate of the community she was part of, never hesitating to volunteer, help out or give back in any way she could.

Jean enjoyed so many things in her life: visits with friends, acquaintances, neighbours and family, baking, knitting, curling, bowling, gardening and flowers, playing a good game of cards and doing word puzzles, just to name a few.

She was strong, loving and kind hearted with a true zest for life right up to her passing. She will be missed dearly and remain in our hearts forever.

Plans for a celebration of life for Jean will be held in Perdue, SK. and interment of the cremated remains at Leney cemetary will be held at a later date when all the Covid-19 restrictions on gatherings have been lifted.

Eric Clapton, arguably the greatest living rock guitarist, wrote a heart wrenching song about the death of his 4 year old son, who fell from a 53-story window.

He took 9 months off and when he returned, his music had changed.

This hardship had made his music, softer, more powerful, more reflective. Do you remember the song he wrote? It is a song of hope!

You may have noticed, now that you have been in quarantine for about two months, that you are seeking either more or less space, depending on your situation. Space defines our relationships. Too much of it and we long to see the ones we love. Too little, and we are ready to flee to the hills for some alone time.

Space is something we take for granted in our lives. But space requires constant awareness, because space, in reality, is a relational dance that we do with each and every object and person in our lives.

As Garth Brooks said, “I could have missed the pain, but I would have missed the dance!”

Be still thy heart: Live sports returns Real live, organized scheduled professional sports returns this week as the PGA Tour holds its breath - along with the rest of the sporting world - by conducting the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club in Texas.

The 72-hole tournament marks North American sports’ first foray back to pseudo normalcy since mid-March, although not much about how this tournament will be conducted will be normal.

There will be no fans strolling the grounds, urging golf balls to “get in the hole” and no roars of appreciation for 45-foot putts that curl into the cup. There will be elbow bumps and a few ‘air fives’ but little in the way of human contact.

Pro US runner attempts to run the world’s fastest mile in blue jeans

Johnny Gregorek planned to be in this years Olympics, but since they have been cancelled, he decided on a different feat for the year.

Gregorek wants to run the world’s fastest mile, and he wants to do it in blue jeans.

“It is not too much harder” to run in blue jeans, said Gregorek, an elite middle-distance runner, adding that “it’s not going to be as much of an obstruction” as he first thought.

The best part about it is that he’s doing the run,

in jeans, to raise mental health awareness.

May was Mental Health Awareness Month and beyond that, he’s been raising funds for the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

He comments how important it is right now with all the isolation happening and that people are staying at home, it can be harder for people to get the resources that they need.

He wants to beat the “blue jean mile” ran by Dillon Maggard, 4:11.80.

the second-fastest indoor mile ran by an American at 3:49.98.

“You know, you’d be surprised, if you’ve ever been running late for something and had to run fast in a pair of pants, then you’ve had the feeling,” he told As It Happens host Carol Off. He says he plans to break the record.
