Nature can put on a subtle show for you if you take the time to look, and the most innocent places can be chock-full of critters. Blackbirds, geese and muskrat use the calm water as their home, plying the area near Biggar for food and shelter last week. The weather is a bit more “spring-like” and we do need a good dump of moisture for farmers.

Sun West selects new Director of Education The Sun West School Division Board of Education is pleased to announce that it has selected Randy Emmerson as its next Director of Education.

Emmerson will commence his duties on August 1.

Emmerson is currently a Superintendent with the Saskatchewan Rivers School Division where his responsibilities include curriculum, assessment, educational technology, staff development, athletics and libraries as well as supervisory responsibility for ten schools including Prince Albert Collegiate Institute.

Emmerson has been a Superintendent with Saskatchewan Rivers since 2014 and was Principal

of Prince Albert Collegiate Institute from 2004 to 2013. He started his teaching career teaching Social Studies and English Language Arts in Unity. He has been very active in community projects in Prince Albert where he coached basketball, volleyball, football, soccer and the Special Olympics.

“Working with learners of all ages gives me lots of energy,” he says.

Emmerson holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Saskatchewan and a Master of Educational Studies from Flinders University of South Australia. He

Saskatchewan’s Education Response Planning Team is offering a sincere thank you to students, families, teachers and staff as you continue to adjust to new ways of learning due to COVID19.

“Your commitment to learning is to be commended during this time that we are together in education by being apart,” a release stated.

“On the advice of Saskatchewan’s Chief Medical Health Officer, the

Education Response Planning Team has informed Saskatchewan’s school divisions that inclass learning for K-12 students will not resume for the remainder of the school year.”

As learning will continue remotely at this time, they are encouraging students and families to take advantage of the supplemental learning opportunities being provided in ways that work best for their situation.

The end of the school

year is an exciting and important time for students, staff and families, and particularly for graduating students.

“We appreciate the importance of graduation ceremonies and farewell celebrations as they often involve not just our families and staff but the broader community as well. While the Chief Medical Officer has prohibited indoor and outdoor public and private gatherings of more than 10 people during Phase

1 and 2 of the province’s Re-Open Saskatchewan Plan, we know that school divisions are working on plans to postpone or find alternate ways to celebrate these important celebrations virtually or otherwise. It is important that we continue to work together, while being apart, to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission in our province.”

The Education Response Planning Team offered their sincere congratulations to the thousands of

graduates and their families across the province They also congratulated teachers and staff who are retiring at the end of this school year.

“While the school year won’t end as we thought it would, with hugs from colleagues and high fives from students, we wish all retiring teachers and staff the very best as they embark on new paths.

Your impact will live on in the students whose lives you have influenced throughout your career,”

they said.

The Education Response Planning Team is working with all school divisions to begin planning for what in-class learning may look like in the new school year, although the timelines will depend on the safety of everyone in Saskatchewan schools including students, teachers and school staff.

With the Traffic Service Unit working in the area again, traffic safety education came at a premium with 13 tickets being

handed out.

There were four other general traffic complaints, one collision and five suspicious vehicles reported.

A few were in the rural area south of town, while members also checked out and locate one vehicle in and around the Eagle Creek area.

Although no criminal activity was discovered in those reports we did have a Break and Enter up in

Glenside.

music, vehicles and parties and five complaints in the town of Biggar about neighbours behav-

“Randy brings many of years of experience to Sun West as a teacher, a school administrator and as a Superintendent. He

has a strong background in distance learning, which is very important in Sun West. We are very happy to have Randy join our school division as we continue our learning journey,” said Itterman.

The Board of Education also expressed their thanks to Dr. Guy Tétrault, Sun West’s current Director of Education who is retiring.

“Guy did a tremendous job for us at Sun West,” said Itterman. “He advanced the division in so many ways but particularly in making us a leader in distance education and personalized learning. We wish him a wonderful retirement!”

Letter to The Editor Dear Editor I get the Independent each week and always open the pages to “Bob Mason” to remind me of the things I should never forget.

Bob reaches into the soul of who we are. A 100 years old - when he writes of firsthand knowledge of the courage and humility of those Second World War veterans in Holland, it paints a picture of sacrifice, courage and a better Canada.

Let’s suppose we profess to be Christians. Bob knows what that means. His writings are of forgiveness and the brotherhood of soldiers, the good the bad and the evil cruelty that is part of any soldiers life on a foreign (or local) battlefield.

Yet it never seemed to deter his belief in trying to do his best; of being frightened in war, yet doing his duty. I presume he will joke at this point that he only did what he was told, but I think he did what was needed to “have the back”, of his fellow soldiers.

Perhaps I am just older and more compassionate. I have been good and not so good and have accidentally been courageous when I didn’t know what it mean’t, or how to carry it off - but I have never faced the critical life and death times of Bob Mason and his fellow soldiers, nor had his compassion or humility to write so well of his enemies and comrades, as Bob mason has written.

Your life and writings are teaching us so much, Bob Mason!

The COVID-19 crisis is a gift for savvy politicians

by Doug Firby A lot of us are finding we have the luxury of unexpected spare time while we wait to bust out of COVID jail.

I am happily using some of my newfound time to slog my way through Churchill: Walking with Destiny, Andrew Roberts’ brilliant and exhaustive examination of one of the greatest leaders of the 20th Century.

Winston Churchill is the complex and courageous man who emerged from 10 years of political exile to lead the United Kingdom through that country’s darkest hour in the Second World War. What is truly delightful about this work is that it tells the story of Churchill warts and all – his vanity, his oversized ego, his at-times spectacular mistakes and his – how can

we put this gently? – at times anachronistic views towards race.

Churchill was not only a gifted speaker, but also someone who spent a lifetime polishing and refining the art of choosing les mots justes, and at delivering them at just the right moments to achieve the optimum effect.

There are so many oneliners from Churchill, a review of them shows how much he influenced the English language. One of my favourites, and one that resonates more than ever today, is this one that is generally attributed to the great prime minister: “Never let a good crisis go to waste.”

Crises, as Churchill understood, are opportune times to bring about changes that would face insurmountable opposition in more normal times.

Naomi Klein, the leftist intellectual, detailed in The Shock Doctrine how the right wing in the U.S. has repeatedly exploited disasters to advance its agenda. It would be disingenuous, however, to suggest such a strategy is used by just one side of the political spectrum.

Every political entity, at some point, has exploited a good crisis to get its own way.

Pandemics, such as this one, are just such a crisis, open to exploitation by the nimble-footed. We see companies, for example, tooting their own horns to build their brand as good corporate citizens.

Some of it is starting to ring hollow. If I see one more commercial by a company claiming that “We’re in this together,” and “We’re here to help,” well . . . I might just hurl

my face mask at the screen.

Incumbent leaders also benefit from crises, if they manage them well. In Calgary, Mayor Naheed Nenshi ensured re-election for himself when he showed poise and common sense during the 2013 flood. In the current crisis, U.S. President Donald Trump has command of the U.S. media, and – were it not for some spectacularly stupid moves – he would have a lock on re-election.

Here in Canada, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau enjoys the gift that keeps giving – 30 minutes of continuous coverage daily from the major news media. Even Rob Ford, Ontario’s once-embattled premier, has enjoy a remarkable resurgence in popularity because he has shown real leadership

during the pandemic.

The fact that Trudeau is able to command continuous and largely uncritical coverage says a great deal about the state of news media. If the news media where in better financial shape, they could assign reporters to go out and do more original reporting rather than just letting the camera run seemingly endlessly in front of this one politician. They could do more fact-checking, or original reporting, rather than relying on the word of someone whose future rests in managing the public spin. They could spend more time with the opposition leaders, seeking out different points of view.

But, alas, the media is not in any position to do any of that, and so much of what Trudeau says is accepted at face value,

unchallenged and unverified. This is partly why this health crisis is paying dividends for the prime minister and his hopes of winning a majority government in the next election.

Never let a crisis go to waste? Some politicians – and I’m thinking of Trump – have wasted the opportunity to create a more statesmanlike image. Others, like Alberta’s Jason Kenney, have had to wear the burden of choosing the worst possible time to go to war with the province’s doctors.

But Trudeau has learned that just standing in front of a mic and sounding sincere is about all he needs to do to emerge a political winner.

It has been some time since Y.T. attended school, but after we started, we learned early on, that when a number is divided by another number the resulting answer is called the “Quotient”.

We left school so long ago that I darn near had to look that one up!

After learning the old alma mater (How do you like that Latin, eh?), we spent a few years on the farm helping Dad, and were introduced to quite a lot of questionable stuff like: Quack Grass, Quota Books, North Quarters and even Cinquefoil - I Calvin Daniels hope I spelled that right!

Man steals wine from wine truck driving down the highway If you like wine, you will love this story. Even if you don’t, there is nothing like a Monday morning booze story, am I right?

This guy didn’t hijack the truck but yet climbed aboard to get a sip himself.

Gabriel Moreno jumped onto a moving tanker truck carrying bulk red wine, then under its belly to unscrew a valve, and drank the wine as the truck traveled up Highway 99.

Moreno was caught on video during the stunt on the Cherokee Freight Lines tanker truck. The video starts by showing Moreno in a sedan, putting his hazard lights on ,

and directing the truck to the side of the highway.

Then the trucker pulls over, thinking that he may have a mechanical issue and that’s why he was flagged down. The video shows Moreno in only his underwear running to the passenger side and out of view of the wine truck.

From this point the trucker, believing nothing was wrong, pulled back onto the freeway with Moreno in tow. Without a shirt or shoes, he rides on the side of the tanker. The video shows him climb underneath the truck as it hits freeway speeds.

One the freeway, the trucker quickly realizes he’s losing fluids, mainly,

hundreds of gallons of wine. The trucker then called CHP. “I’ve listened to thousands and thousands of calls,” Modesto CHP officer Tom Olsen said. “This one’s up there in the top 10.”

The trucker reports finding Moreno in an unusual position. To get to the wine, Moreno unscrewed a valve under the truck, as the truck traveled north down Highway 99.

Without the valve in place, wine was gushing from the tanker truck as Moreno gulped down all he could.

“This individual was able to release the wine from under the tanker, and he placed himself

underneath the tanker in such a manner, the best way to describe this was somebody doing like snow angels,” Officer Olsen said.

The red wine heist of May 2020 understandably was arrested.

“This individual got exactly what they were looking for immediately,” Officer Olsen said.

The trucking company reports losing about 1,000 gallons of product, with most of it lost to Highway 99. The 1,000 gallons of red wine that was lost was enough to fill about 5,000 bottles of wine.

Lastly (I’ll bet that the reader is glad to see that world!) a high-minded quotation from William Shakespeare: The quality of mercy is not strained.

It falleth like the gentle rain from Heaven.

Y.T. could keep on and on, I guess, mentioning little items under “Q” in the old L+T: “Quiet Tank”. “C.Q.M.S” (grrrr), “C.F.Q.C”, and my own call letters: “C.F.I.C.” (See if I care!). But Why? Mebbe someone will see all that stuff soon enough anyway!

Chef Dez on Cooking: Cooking Pasta for the Best Results A staple in almost every home’s pantry is spaghetti or some form of pasta that makes its way to the dinner table on a regular basis.

Many of us take the time to focus on building the flavour and complexity of the accompanying sauce for our pasta of choice; however, the pasta itself needs attention as well.

Many food columns could be dedicated to achieving palate-pleasing goals in pasta sauces but let us not forget about the substance of these dishes – the pasta noodle.

Thus, this column will be focused on unraveling some myths and procedures in what seems to be one of the simplest tasks in the kitchen – boiling water and cooking pasta.

The first thing to examine is the dry pasta noodle and the transformation that takes place during the cooking process. The most obvious observation is that cooked pasta is

larger in volume and flexible, compared to dry raw pasta. What makes this possible is the absorption of water during the boiling process.

The cooking process of any food, no matter how simple it seems, needs to be analyzed because this is our chance of infusing flavour into the ingredients being cooked.

Everyone has heard of the process of salting water when boiling pasta, but few know or realize the reason why.

Some believe it is to help the pasta from sticking or to help keep the water from boiling over; however, the reason is to

season the pasta and to increase the flavour.

Pasta on its own is very bland and combining bland cooked pasta with a sauce that you have perfected, will be a detriment to your finished dish.

If the pasta water is salted liberally then the pasta will be absorbing salt-water, instead of just water, and thus your pasta Chef Dez dish will be seasoned from the inside out.

Another no-no is to add oil to your pasta water.

This idea probably first came about to prevent the pasta noodles from sticking together, however it will affect your finished

dish negatively. Oiled pasta water will help to keep your pasta from sticking together when cooking, but a film of oil will always be left on the drained noodles.

This thin film of oil will inhibit the starchiness of the cooked pasta and then in turn lead to the accompanying sauce to not stick to or absorb into the noodles as much.

When pasta is eaten you want the starchiness of the pasta to hold onto the sauce as much as possible, so that the dish will be able to be enjoyed to the fullest.

That being said, drained cooked pasta should not be oiled for the same reason.

A better way to help prevent your pasta noodles from sticking together during the cooking process is to stir the noodles constantly for the first two minutes of cooking time. By that point the water will have returned

to its full-boil action and the agitation of the bubbling water will keep the pasta moving and prevent it from sticking.

Once the pasta has been drained, do not rinse it. Rinsing will cool the pasta down and also wash away some of the starchiness that we want to help secure the sauce to the noodles.

Homemade “spaghetti” is a very common dish in many households, and whether you use spaghetti, linguine, or other types of noodles, I hope these few simple recommendations help to make your meal more enjoyable and flavourful.

Dear Chef Dez: What is the best way to tell when pasta is cooked?

Norma L. Maple Ridge, B.C. Dear Norma: There are many ways that people use to determine that pasta is cooked to perfection – including

the old wives’ tale about throwing it against the wall, and if it sticks, it’s done.

The best way is to let your mouth do the talking. Carefully remove a strand or piece of pasta from the boiling water.

After waiting a few seconds to cool down, take a bite. It should feel ‘el dente’, meaning ‘to the tooth’ in Italian. This relates to the feeling that the pasta should not be overcooked and offer some resistance when biting into it. It should not be hard but should not be too soft and mushy either.

The package of the pasta you purchase will always offer a guideline cooking time, but your bite will always give you the right answer.

Its been 75 years . . .

I wondered what was happening in Biggar, so I went to the Independent . . . we have them on microfilm here in the museum.

The Thursday, May 10 edition front page read “Victory is Ours”.

“Peace Day Returned to Europe, The unconditional surrender of the German Nation took place on Monday May 7th, the official VE Day celebrations were on May 8th.”

Inside the paper on page 4 was a column headlined “VE Day in Biggar”. There were religious ceremonies in all the churches and in the Majestic Theatre.

Miss Deltra Eamon was singing in the Theatre.

She is mentioned in our Musical Legacy Exhibit, check it out when we reopen.

There was a free dance on Tuesday the 8th in the Town Hall, music supplied by Messrs. E. Koebel, R. Stuart, C. L’Hoir, W. Hoppe and R. Adolphe. Earlier in the day, a band of 12 men set up in Mr. L’Hoir’s truck and they drove around town playing Victory music.

In the park (it does not name the park though could it be Buckingham Park?) a huge bonfire was lit “to cook Hitler’s goose”. Also, there was an effigy of “the most hated paper hanger in the world” paraded around town on the Fire Department’s truck. When it arrived in the park it was stung up on “gallows” over the bonfire!

Other news that day mentioned that Vic Padgham, the son of Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Padgham, had been reported as missing, but the good news he was found in the UK recuperating from his

time as a prisoner of war.

Another story was a “British Bride Arrives”.

Mrs. A. E. Coleman arrived with little daughter Joyce. They will be living with Mr. and Mrs. W.S. Coleman here in Biggar until husband Mick arrives home from service in Europe. The bride had been delayed in Montreal because little daughter had developed measles in Montreal and had to stay there. Such an ordeal for a young woman coming to Canada with a young child, can you imagine?

I know a woman who came to the reserve in Fort Qu’Appelle from Brighton in England. Talk about a culture shock for her. Her handsome soldier really could not prepare her for the culture shock of that move! But, she stayed, because it was where she could eat bananas - they had not been available for years in the UK! Here in the museum we have a story of a French War Bride with our WWII exhibit. She too came to Canada on her own and could not speak the lan-

guage!

The courage of the men and women from Saskatchewan who entered the war is legendary in

places like the Netherlands, Belgium and France. They came a long way to defend and liberate the people caught up

in the ravages of war - the one thing where they are really never any winners.

Science key to our future It was interesting, although hardly surprising, to see a recent article in the agricultural press suggesting a growth in ag technology coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic.

That is a statement that could be applied to a host of sectors post COVID-19, from the obvious medical research, to the logistics of food distribution, to in-store bio-security and more.

Of course a spike in technology post crisis is very much the norm for humanity. We as a species have always done a rather admirable job of creating solutions to problems through science. When our backs are to a wall science becomes focused on solutions, and is generally rather successful.

While those solutions might be to a rather specific problem, the knowledge gained through the process often opens doors to more discoveries and foster new solutions to a myriad of other issues.

Little discoveries made on the path to creating a COVID-19 vaccine, or treatment, will ultimately be used to aid in the research into other diseases.

Sask. Rec Firearms demands Immediate removal of all .223 firearms from feds banned list The Saskatchewan Recreational Firearms Community (RFC) is actively involved at the Provincial and Federal level in the strong opposition of the recent firearms ban decreed by the Government of Canada on May 1.

The appearance of .223 caliber firearms on this banned list is just one of many unjustifiable aspects.

According to the Federal Government, “firearms capable of discharging a projectile with a muzzle energy greater than 10,000 joules” will be banned under this new legislation.

The .223 cartridge produces only 1,850 joules.

The Mini 14 Ranch Rifle, for example, was not designed for military use. It was designed as a predator control rifle

for ranchers and farmers. The .223 is recognized in the Government of Saskatchewan’s hunting regulations as a legitimate caliber to hunt all game in Saskatchewan.

Additionally, the Federal Government recognizes .223 caliber firearms as suitable for hunting, as they have allowed First Nations to continue use of certain prescribed firearms of this caliber to

hunt for sustenance.

“The .223 cartridge is a low to medium power cartridge used for predator control, and the cosmetics of any .223 have zero effect on their functionality,” stated RFC Chairman Gil White. “The .223 cartridge and those rifles designed for its use are

some of the most popular predator control firearms in Canada. This is one of many examples of how the OIC is taking a commonly used firearm and vilifying it, and we urge the government to reverse this decision.”

get shooters have “nothing to fear” and goes on to say that no part of this ban “is intended to interfere with this lawful responsible legal activity”.

5 weird items that wash up on beaches Lately there’s some optimism to the environmental news as air quality improves and carbon emissions reduce.

Environmentalists caution that worldwide quarantines aren’t a sustainable way of dealing with the climate change crisis.

But even so, it’s nice to see a positive change in the environment is possible. Our oceans in particular suffer from single-use-plastics, pollution, and rising temperatures.

If you haven’t heard about the trash island in the Pacific, brace yourself. There’s 1.8 trillion individual pieces of plastic in our oceans (250 for every person on earth), some of which gathered into an island twice the size of Texas in the Pacific Ocean.

With all that garbage washing up on our beaches, sometimes beachcombers find some weird items.

Cremation bag During a seasonal beach cleaning event in New Jersey, volunteers discovered an empty bag, used for holding cremated remains. Plenty of people want their ashes

spread at sea, but maybe a pressed-for-time loved one tossed the bag, wholesale, right into the water.

Feet Up and down the north Atlantic coast in North America, beach strollers exercise caution when examining shoes washed up on the beach.

More often than not, a foot is present inside.

At a rate of just over one per year, feet wash up on the shores of Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia.

There’s not a foot fetishist serial killer, however, most of the feet belong to accidental deaths or suicides in the water. The feet separate from the legs through natural decomposition and wash ashore separate from the remains.

Robot Hand New York’s waterways are home to all kinds of strange artifacts, which sometimes wash up on the beach.

On Staten Island, Great Kills Park is home to four beaches where strange items wash up amongst seaweed.

One of those items, found in the early aughts, was an articulated robot hand, missing two digits. The online journal Underwater New York chronicles the items found throughout the New York waterways.

4.) Donate yourself to a body farm. Have you never heard of a body farm? They are also known as outdoor forensic anthropology labs and their purpose is to provide a place where researchers are able to study human decomposition. Information learned through these labs is used to help with law enforcement investigations. For example, the decomposition timeline for a body that was perhaps wrapped in plastic and buried can be more accurately determined by looking at the data from one of these labs. There are seven body farms throughout the United States.

5.) Get turned into fireworks and light up the sky. In the UK, there is a company that will pack your cremations into fireworks, so that you can spread the ashes mid-air.

6.) Get buried in a compost suit. If you are looking for a green way to handle your final remains, you might want to look into this option.

You can be buried in a suit made of mushrooms and other microorganisms. They are called the Infinity Suit and Infinity Shroud and they create zero waste. You can get either the shroud or the suit for $1,500 and you can choose a biodegradable coffin or no coffin at all.

7.) Become part of the oceanic world. Are you

a lover of the sea? If so, you may be interested in the company Eternal Reefs who mixes ashes with environmentally safe concrete and lowers this into the sea where it stays as a man made habitat for sea life. Prices for this service start around $3,000 and there is reef cashing available in the United States along the east and gulf coasts.

8.) Have your body donated to a medical education program. If you like the idea of helping physicians, dentists, nurses, and physical therapists to become better professionals, then you may want to consider this option. All of these medical professionals learn more about anatomy through the use of studies on human cadavers. These cadevers are also used in the development of life-saving surgical procedures.

RETAILS FIREWORKS ARE HERE TO PURCHASE COME ON DOWN TO THE INDEPENDENT

by Delta Fay Cruickshank for the Biggar Museum and Gallery The completion of the Grand Trunk Railway and the Canadian Pacific Railways began to bring more people to the area.

“For a fee of $10.00, a promise to live on the land for six months each year for three years, and to make improvements, a quarter section (160 acres) was granted to farmers.”* By 1908 the area was known as Biggar, named

by William Hodgins Biggar, QC, a director of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway. At about the same time H.P. Turner and his wife had been living in a tent all summer.

One hot day, Mrs. Turner sat down behind the tent and cried, “Where in the world is the town going to be?”

Her husband replied, “Right down there where you see that box car standing!”* Can you imagine the discomforts Mrs. Turner must have had to endure coming to this raw prairie . . . camping in a tent, giving small comfort to her lying on the ground listening to the howl of the coyotes, or the buzz of the mosquitos. Where did they get their water for washing, drinking and getting her laundry done?

Without stores, where did her groceries come from?

In the ‘Biggar Saskatchewan, Canada, A Pictorial History’ there is mention that her mail was delivered by the Grand Trunk Pacific railway to a temporary depot, where it was dumped on the floor and she would have had to pick out her own letters. This was a marked improvement from earlier days when one had to take a six mile walk to the G.T.P. office at Gravel Pit on the uncertain chance that there might be mail in!

Biggar, rising from the dreams By 1909, life would seem to be getting easier for Mrs. Turner. Mooney Hardware was open, for the things for her house (hopefully she had a house by this time!). In 1910 there was a school for the children. The first classroom was run by Miss Sarah Hassard, over McPhee’s store, now part of the Biggar Hotel.* At McPhee’s store, also known as The Biggar Trading Company, Mrs. Turner was able to get groceries (fancy and staple), fresh fruit, dry goods and even a pair of new shoes! Mr. McPhee’s ad in the Biggar World, August 19, 1909 boasted that he paid the highest prices for butter and eggs.

I wonder the names of the women who kept the chickens and cows to help bring a little bit of cash for the little things they could buy to make their homes more comfortable. Did these women live close to the railway, or did they have to travel from farms miles away?

How did they travel, horseback, horse and buggy? Makes jumping into the SUV to run into town seem pretty easy!

And so, the town began, as a hub for transportation, with people coming to build their homes and businesses.

This quote from the local newspaper, The Biggar World, may have been what convinced someone looking to start a new life in the west: “Biggar is beautifully located on a gentle eminence at the extreme western edge of the Bear Hills, overlooking a fertile farming community.

prairies adapted to the easy and lucrative pursuit of agriculture. The land in this favoured district is of a diversified nature from heavy clay to a rich black loam with enough grit to ensure early ripening of crops and body enough to guarantee excellent yields. Wheat, oats, bar-

ley, flax, potatoes and garden vegetables thrive in very few areas as they do in this. The town is situated on two Great Canadian Railways, The Grand Trunk Pacific and The Canadian Pacific.

And the village grew, and the farms rose out of the prairie. By 1911, village became a town, Biggar, named for a very important officer in the

Unmasked man panty raids Walmart, surrenders to dog We’re all trying to figure out the recent laws and regulations for social distancing and donning masks.

Listen, the safest thing to do for yourself and others is to always wear a mask and stay six feet away from other people.

The Hartford Courant reported an unmasked Connecticut man threw a tantrum and a rock when an area McDonalds refused him service.

It’s an unfamiliar world, and sometimes it’s hard to process the emotions that come up from losing a sense of normalcy, like a Quarter-Pounder with Cheese.

The man, 37-year-old Jason D. Daddario, agreed to leave the McDonalds but not without a parting shot. He threw a rock through a window at the restaurant and took off to a nearby Walmart. At that point the state police got involved. He stole several pairs of women’s underwear from the Walmart and tried to take off running from state troopers.

He surrendered after

they threatened to release a police dog.

Authorities charged him with criminal mischief and breach of peace.

All-in-all, probably not how Daddario wanted his Friday night to go.

But I get it. There are some days stuck in quarantine when I want to throw a rock at my own windows. Stealing women’s underwear from Walmart is less relatable, however.

You also have to give it to the guy for knowing when to surrender. Those police dogs love taking down bad guys.

Rough as it might be not getting a value meal from Mickey D’s, a trained shepherd taking you into custody is even rougher.

These dogs don’t mess around.

Wearing masks has become political, with some people refusing to maintain their personal liberty. At a Family Dollar store in Detroit, two men shot and killed security guard Calvin Munerlyn after he refused an unmasked woman entry

I’m not a real sports fan.

Not in the know the players, know the statistics, know the coaches sort of way. I’m a sports fan in the way I get caught up in the spirit of the game.

I also cherry-pick my teams.

It’s not a calculated thought, but also not unlike most sports fans, I’d wager, in that nostalgia has a lot to do with it.

In baseball, I watch the Rockies because I was in the third grade in Colorado when we got the team. I never cared about football before, but after seeing the Eagles win the Super Bowl in 2018, I’ve watched every game.

What to do with these hours instead of cheering for our team? Sports movies. Here are my picks.

A League of Their Own Obviously. It has one of the very first celebrity coronavirus survivors, Tom Hanks, as the gruff but lovable coach Jimmy Dugan.

The movie follows the

Peaches, a team in the women’s baseball league, assembled during the second World War. It’s a complicated sports story, with athletes pulled away from the game by other responsibilities and tragedies.

Besides Tom Hanks, the all-star cast includes Geena Davis, Madonna, Rosie O’Donnell, and Bill Pullman.

Also catch one of the greatest lines in sports cinema, “There’s no crying in baseball.”

Space Jam There’s a scheduled reboot coming in 2021 starring LeBron James, so now’s as good a time as ever to watch, memorize, and get transformed by the original.

In it, Michael Jordan helps Bugs Bunny and the Looney Toons defeat a rival team of cartoons who stole the basketball skills from NBA stars like Charles Barkley, Shawn Bradley, and Patrick Ewing.

Terry (Elizabeth) Grasdal

It is with great sadness, we announce the loss of our beloved mother, Terry Grasdal. Mom was born in Regina, SK. October 17, 1933 and passed away on April 30, 2020 in Biggar Long Term Care Home. Mom had two sisters and three brothers who shared in many family gatherings, always celebrating Ukrainian Christmas together for many years. Mom and Dad lived in Saskatoon until 1974 when they moved to Biggar, SK. to raise us kids. Mom always had a soft heart and welcomed many of our friends, there was always a bed and a hot meal provided for all.

When we started to take part in sports, dancing, skating, curling or whatever event we chose to do you could always find Mom there cheering us on and once the grandchildren came along the same followed.

There were many a day where you would see Mom trucking to and from downtown pushing a stroller or pulling a sled with grandkids, taking them for treats. When they retired mom and dad were fortunate enough to spend 3 winters in Whiterock, BC where they enjoyed the weather and walked many miles admiring the scenery. Mom loved to spend time sipping her coffee and having many conversations with friends and family.

Left to cherish Terry’s memory is her daughter, Donna (Owen) Weekes and their family Breanne (Brenen), Lindsay (Josh) Adrianna, Hailey (Scott), Andrea (Eloy), Brendan & Ryan; son, Darren (Shauna) Grasdal and their family Tiana & Linden; daughter, Rhonda (Wade) Gilbertson and their family Stacey (Chris) Chloe & Hayden, Shayna (Nathan), Michael & Waylon; daughter-in-law, Cheryl Grasdal and her family Carling (Jacy), Cody (Leah) Zach & Logan; several nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Elizabeth was predeceased by her loving husband Elmer Grasdal in 2003; son, Gerry Grasdal in 2005.

CFL’S future may hinge on Gov’t assistance The risk is real: The CFL may become Canada’s Forgotten League. Out of sight, out of mind.

That’s the observation made by Lyle Bauer, former Canadian Football League player and executive with Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Calgary Stampeders, after Commissioner Randy Ambrosie gave ominous stateof-the-CFL comments as they relate to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Ambrosie met with federal government officials in early May to plead his league’s case for a financial bailout. The league is hanging by a thread, he said, and a full season with no football - or a truncated schedule played in front of reduced crowds, or no crowds would be disastrous.
