Blake Reid Band hits the Majestic, January 16 A new year and a new show for the Biggar and District Arts Council in the form of the Blake Reid Band, January 16.

The Blake Reid Band pays homage to the craft of making authentic music rooted in the traditions of country and great storytelling.

While incorporating flavours of folk, roots, red dirt, swamp, bluegrass, Americana, rock n roll, outlaw country and more.

Blake and the guys are first and foremost friends, bonded by common values, love of music, performing, and a mutual appreciation and respect for their incredible abilities as

musicians. There are no weak links in this line up as each of the members brings an impressive and honest musical repertoire to the group. In short, these guys can play . . . they are the real damn

deal.

The Blake Reid Band comes to the Majestic Theatre, Thursda, January 18 with show time at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are still available at de Moissac Jewellers.

First Impressions Community Exchange

by D’Shae Bussiere, Town of Biggar Community Development Officer This past May 8, four representatives from the Town of Biggar travelled to the Town of Wadena to exchange our communities first impressions.

The First Impressions Community Exchange Program offered through the Saskatchewan Economic Development Alliance (SEDA).

In turn, four visitors from Wadena travelled to Biggar and conducted a community “secret shop” on Wednesday, May 29 from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. These visitors followed a structured layout to provide constructive feedback on our community’s appearance, services and infrastructure.

The site visit team from Wadena consisted of Jennifer Taylor, Cheryl Harmsworth, Alison Squires, and Sharon Rorquist. This team was made up of women aged 35 to 60,

On November 18, Jennifer Taylor came

back to Biggar to present her group’s findings of the town. The group “expected a humble not showy, community and this expectation was matched”.

They were impressed by the wide streets, ample parking and the

downtown park. The group loved the street signs down main street and noted “potential for more appealing store front displays”.

The ladies gave some recommendations for tourist attractions including the Town’s

ties with CN and the caboose at the north entrance of town, a beer festival associated with Prairie Malt, regular live music in the downtown park, and if there was any way we could market the distinct shape of our

water tower.

The group noted our variety of recreation facilities along with the many opportunities to engage in culture with the theatre and museum. They suggested better signage for our recreational facilities such as the pool and arena to make them easier for visitors to find and some highway signage to bring people in to the splash park and playground at Buckingham Park.

The presentation was very progressive and the group left their visit, that day, with many ideas to improve their own community such as sidewalks, benches and community spirit; stating “a friendly wave and smile are very important”.

The Town of Biggar would like to thank the community. One of the first noted aspects of Wadena’s visit was the people with prominent “positive attitudes and obvious community pride”.

Welcome to 2020! New hope, old Trudeau antics It would seem that all the promise of a new year should be enough to bring a ray of hope to the most jaded Westerners.

But the Federal Liberal increase to the carbon tax - meant to save the world and appease a certain upset snotty United Nations teen by the name of Greta - has reared its ugly head as of January 1.

While Justin Trudeau basked on the beach in the warm climes of Costa Rica over the holiday, no doubt having paid for carbon offsets with taxpayer dollars to get the family there, Canadians are now paying more for food, fuel and the medication needed for the headache he’s imposed on the country.

While Canada’s carbon emissions pale in comparison to China and India, we are one of the world’s largest per capita emitters.

But the reality is that we have to.

Feeding the world doesn’t just magically happen. Heating your home is a reality at minus-30, and as far as I know, teleportation of goods to and fro hasn’t yet been invented.

So it’s a tax - and a penalty for just living. As Justin Trudeau rested on the beach, comforted by the Christmas holiday taxpayers bought him, we were given a lump of coal . . . coal that Trudeau can tax.

In his Christmas speech (sorry, he would want me to call it a “Holiday Message”), he passionately expounded that the season is about “taking care of each other”.

Well, thanks for the hand-up. With PM’s like these, who needs dictators?

What we really needed in the new year is a PM that helps ALL Canadians, not a social-climber, pseudo-intellectual, more concerned selfies, looking good and trying to please his United Nations buddies.

by Aaron Wudrick For Canadians who endured an election that often felt like a stomach flu, here’s something to make everyone feel better: the overwhelming majority of MPs agree we need an income tax cut.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau promised to save the average family about $600 every year by increasing the basic personal income tax exemption from $12,000 to $15,000. Except for the high-income earners he leaves out, it’s a broadbased and truly helpful break for Canadian families. In his first press conference following the election, Trudeau confirmed the tax cut is coming.

On this front, Trudeau’s record is worth noting.

In 2015, his first order of business was also an income tax cut, in which he reduced the middleincome tax bracket from 22 per cent to 20.5 per cent - while at the same time increasing the top marginal rate by three percentage points.

And, while Liberals and Conservatives may disagree on almost everything, income tax cuts should have them singing in sweet harmony. Count the votes and at least 278 MPs can happily work together to reduce income taxes.

Despite speculation during the campaign that the government might abandon the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion as part of a coalition deal, Trudeau has ruled out any coalition and says

it’s full speed ahead on TMX. Here again, the opposition is no obstacle. Scheer and his caucus would probably grab picks and shovels to build the pipelines themselves if necessary. With that 278-seat consensus, the project should get moving ahead pronto.

Building the pipeline is an important step to create jobs and reconnect an alienated West, but it also comes with benefits for Trudeau. The Canadian Taxpayers Federation ran the numbers and the lack of pipeline capacity cost Ottawa $6.2 billion in lost revenue during the last five years with losses continuing at the rate of $3.6 million every day.

With Trudeau projecting chronic deficits, captur-

ing that lost revenue matters.

That’s where the good news fades, however, and those queasy feelings come back.

And we can’t forget the highly divisive carbon tax, which Trudeau has imposed on five provinces that don’t want it, and which several provincial premiers are so angry about they’re fighting Ottawa all the way to the Supreme Court.

This time the Liberal platform contains many new proposals for tax increases, including a new so-called luxury goods tax, a “speculators’ tax” on real estate, and a digital services tax.

If that wasn’t worrying enough, there’s also reason to be nervous on the spending side.

Having broken their 2015 pledge to balance the budget, the Liberals no longer even pretend to care about deficits. Their platform contains tens of billions of dollars in red ink with no timeline for eliminating the deficit. With the federal debt already sitting at just under $700 billion and costing around $23 billion a year in interest payments, the government is already living well beyond its means.

Demands from the NDP may compound the problem. The NDP platform is full of expensive proposals - from $14 billion for housing to $10 billion for government daycare that would require even bigger deficits.

As with taxes, there’s reason for Canadians to

be concerned about pipelines.

So, the real test for Trudeau on Trans Mountain won’t be getting parliamentary support. It will be whether he has the steel to stare down those who would go as far as breaking the law to try to block it.

In minority parliaments, the governing party has to find common cause with other parties to get things done. On that score, the prime minister’s pledges on taxes and pipelines have the clear support of the largest two parties that together received two thirds of the popular vote. Canadians want politicians to work together.

Pipelines and taxes are where they should start.

We had a few misgivings about this, as it turned out. Y.T. improved a lot more than most medical people expected, but we sold the farm and moved away.

Cooking West Coast Cauliflower Kedgeree florets of the cauliflower, with a cheese grater, into almost rice shaped granules. The great thing about this is that it is more nutritious than rice (perfect for your new year’s resolution), and you can barely notice that it is not rice in the finished dish.

The best advice I can give you when making cauliflower rice is to use a large skillet. The grated cauliflower has a lot of moisture and you will want that to Neighbourly evaporate over higher News heat to prevent it from becoming mushy.

As of January 1, I became the official Corporate Chef of B.C. Egg, the marketing board that represents B.C. Egg Farmers. I am proud to share my first official recipe for them with you: West Coast Cauliflower Kedgeree. “What is a Kedgeree?� you may be wondering. It is a curried rice dish from the UK and is classically made with smoked haddock and boiled eggs. I have replaced the traditional rice with cauliflower rice and used smoked salmon instead of the haddock, to give it more of a West Coast flare.

If you have never had cauliflower rice before, you are in for a treat.

Asquith Council news for December 2019 Asquith Town Council held its December regular council meeting on December 11, 2019.

Attending were Mayor Gail Erhart, Councillors, Dylan Claypool, Jeff Eide, Ted Goodnough, and Harold Edwards.

Also attending was CAO Kathy Picketts and Foreman Darren Kraft. The meeting was called to order at 7 p.m.

A resolution was made to accept the Council minutes from the November 13 regular council meeting .

Council made a motion to accept the November 2019 financial and November 2019 bank reconciliation’s as presented to them at the meeting.

Accounts Paid in the amount of $26,606.39 and Accounts Payable of $26,463.11 were accepted as presented.

Please remember that Utility Billing will be going up to a minimum of $93.00/month commencing January 1, 2020.

by Calvin Daniels If there is one thing I am rather confident in, when I look toward the future of agriculture, is that producers will face more and more rules and regulations in terms of what they do on their own land.

That is perhaps not a particularly Chef Dezsurprising statement since there on cooking has been a trend in that directionChef forDez years now.

Regulations rarely start here on the Canadian Prairies, but as new rules come into play in other jurisdictions they are often adopted here, albeit at times tweaked to specific situations here.

As examples, farmers today face much more regulation when they go to trench across their land to drain a slough than they did a Notable decade ago. There are also rules developed in the last decade, or so, regarding the disposal of dead farm animals. Simply dragging them to a fence line for the coyotes and magpies to clean up, being frowned upon, for some rather obvious reasons.

Livestock producers also face new regulations when it comes to veterinary work on the Agriculture farm. It is no longer a simple case of going to the farm supply store Calvin Daniels to buy a bottle of penicillin and going home to self-treat a sick animal.

The list of regulations will only get longer moving forward.

governments.

It can be argued politicians should listen to those who put them in power, but often voters come at perceived issues from an emotional viewpoint rather than one based on good science and common sense. That can create some real issues for governments trying to appease the voters they need to keep happy to be re-elected, and doing the best thing, for in this scenario, agriculture.

That was the apparent case recently in France recently when the government established safe distances for pesticide spreading on crops near homes in an attempt to settle a debate between farmers and environmentalists.

From Jan. 1, there must be a five-metre gap between sprayed fields and housing for shorter crops like cereals and a 10-metre zone for taller crops like fruit trees, the agriculture, environment and health ministries said in a joint statement according to a recent story at producer.com.

The government regulations haven’t made either side happy, not a surprise, but it does show how politicians have to juggle to try to develop reasonable rules and to hold onto votes.

Do gift cards have additional fees?

With gift cards being a popular holiday gift choice, the Financial and Consumer Affairs Authority (FCAA) wants consumers to know the rules surrounding gift cards and their usage. Consumers often have concerns surrounding fees, expiration and redemption.

Here are some tips to know when using gift cards: • There are no additional fees. Gift cards, unlike credit cards, should not have post purchase activation fees, usage fees, or annual/monthly payments.

• Gift cards can’t expire, except for a few exceptions. Gift cards that are purchased and sold in Saskatchewan don’t have expiration dates. The only time an expiry date is allowed on a gift card is if you received the card after making a donation to a charity or nothing of value was provided

to obtain the card (for example, free promotional gift cards distributed for advertising purposes can have expiry dates).

• Use your gift cards promptly. If a store goes out of business, it’s unlikely you’ll be able to recover the value from your card.

• When buying a gift card, make sure to read the fine print. By reading the fine print, you will know all the limits the card has prior to purchase.

On December 17 the Red Apple staff Rosalin, Debbie and Jo accompanied by six elves from Biggar Fisher Squadron Air Cadets and local students met Santa and the staff at the long term care wing at the Biggar Hospital to bring Christmas to the residents. For the past three years the Biggar Red Apple store has organized an “Adopt A Senior” program to collect donations of money and gifts for the residents. The staff at the lodge get a wish list from each resident and with the generosity of Biggar and district’s support we are able to make those wishes come true. This year we were also able to purchase a TV and selection of new movies. Who starts in goal? Who should be traded? Should the coach be fired? Who gets time on the power play?

So with that in mind, let’s pretend that some sort of international hockey championship - Winter Olympics, for example - is approaching and every country has to select a 22-player roster (12 forwards; seven on defence; three goalies).

Canada has such a deep pool of talent that some tremendous players would be left at home.

Sorry, John Tavares, you simply aren’t good enough to play for Canada. Our country is too deep at centre.

Our fictitious Canadian team starts in the middle, with the world’s best player, Connor McDavid, leading the way. He’s backed by fellow centremen Nathan MacKinnon, ol’ reliable Sidney Crosby and Steven Stamkos, who edges Tavares for the final centre position.

Other star centres left at home include the likes of Patrice Bergeron, Logan Couture, Matt Barzal,

Ryan O’Reilly, Taylor Hall, Brayden Point and Tyler Seguin. Wow! Canada has enough centres to fill three rosters.

On left wing, the Canadian squad might be led

by Brad Marchand, even though he’d be likely to incite an international incident. Others on the port side are Johathan Huberdeau, David Perron and Matthew Tkachuk.

(Maybe the coaches can add Tavares to the roster and use him on left wing to shore up an otherwise Bruce Penton weak collection of players.)

Food for Thought Farms at Plato grows vegetables and herbs year long - when they can’t keep up with demand they do bring in from other biologically controlled growers that they work with. They then deliver to weekly subscribers of their veggie delivery

Sports & Recreation Alumni Game a big hit

Blowin’ off a bit of energy before the holiday

. . . Biggar Senior Nationals hit the ice for the second edition of the alumni game, December 21.

The Alumni team defeated the current Nationals, 13-11 in a high scoring affair. Big winners on the night, however, was Ronald McDonald House, as Nationals donated a massive amount of food to the worthy cause. Future Nats (below picture) get a high-five from an Alum as they take to the ice during intermission.

Biggar Central Senior Boys Basketball host tournament

Nats fall to Outlaws

The New Year starts off with a bang.

The Senior Boys and Girls will start the action by travelling to Kerrobert on Wednesday January 8 for some exhibition games.

On January 10 and 11 the Senior Girls will be travelling to a tournament in Perdue.

On January 10 and 11 the Senior Boys team will be hosting their annual home tournament.

Teams from Unity, LCBI, Dalmeny, Delisle, Kindersley, Eatonia, and Rosetown will be attending. The game action starts Friday at 3:30 when Biggar takes on Unity.

The action continues all night Friday and Saturday with the final slatted for 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Come on out and watch and cheer the Senior Boys on!!
