It’s looking like another busy season for Biggar firefighters, and Monday they responded to a prairie fire at Parrish and Heimbecker west of Biggar. The fire was contained to the grass land near the facility, and all that was lost were some rail ties. No injuries were reported but the investigation into the cause is ongoing. With fire bans already in effect, residents are being asked to exercise caution.

Biggar RCMP report

by Cpl. Dereck Crozier, Biggar Detachment, NCO IC This past week Biggar Detachment members responded to 26 calls for service.

Seven calls were received for suspicious people/vehicles. Mem-

bers were able to locate half of the suspects and found nothing criminal to further report.

There were three general traffic complaints and three tickets issued this week. We had one complaint of a rural commercial site being broken

into where suspects proceeded to remove copper wire from the site undetected.

This week there were also a number of by-law style complaints for noise, fires and property line disputes. We had two collisions to respond to. One

being a head on collision as a result of a domestic assault where the suspect

fled the scene, only to later be picked up in Saskatoon and put Biggar on

the map for all the wrong reasons.

Unity business broken into On April 18 at approximately 4:30 a.m., Unity RCMP were called to an alarm at a business in Unity.

Upon arrival members found that the a break in had occurred and the front door glass had been smashed. The suspect(s) stole three Apple iPad’s and three Apple computers from a display case.

There are no suspects

at this time.

Biggar man arrested for dangerous driving in Saskatoon A 29-year-old Biggar, Saskatchewan man is facing a number of charges following an incident in which a vehicle was recorded travelling 133 km/h in a 50 km/h zone

on 8th Street East in Saskatoon, April 21.

A Patrol Officer on duty in the area witnessed the half-ton truck travelling at a high rate of speed at approximately 11:30

p.m. A traffic stop was attempted 8th Street and Louise however the driver refused to stop.

Members of the Air Support Unit were able to assist from above and offi-

cers utilized a tire deflation device at 20th Street and Idylwyld Drive.

The vehicle continued to travel and a second tire deflation device was used at Avenue C and 22nd

Street. The vehicle continued to be driven with no tires until it came to a stop at Avenue P. The 29-year-old driver was found to be under the influence of drugs and

was arrested.

He is now facing charges of Dangerous Driving, Impaired Driving, Evade Police and Breach of Conditions.

Province announces Re-Open Saskatchewan plan Premier Scott Moe and Saskatchewan’s Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Saqib Shahab announced the Re-Open Saskatchewan plan, April 23.

Re-Open Saskatchewan is a plan built on a methodical and phased approach to slowly lifting restrictions so that more businesses can open and more employees can go back to work.

The plan introduces five

phases to methodically, gradually and cautiously re-open businesses and services across Saskatchewan, beginning May 4. The plan also details physical distancing measures and restrictions that will remain in place throughout the five phases and provides a number of factors to inform decisions regarding the lifting of long-term restrictions.

“Over the next several weeks, restrictions will be

gradually lifted by adding more types of businesses to the allowable businesses list, meaning that they can re-open if they so choose,” Moe said. “All businesses and public venues will be required to continue following physical distancing and cleaning and disinfection practices to protect both employees and customers. Members of the public will be expected to follow physical distancing

rules and to stay home if they are experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms.”

The timing and order of the businesses and workplaces included in each phase is subject to change throughout the process based on a continuous assessment of transmission patterns and other factors.

opening of medical services restricted under the current public health order, and the resumption of low-risk outdoor recreational activities, including fishing and boat launches, golf courses and a fixed date for parks and campgrounds.

The size restrictions of public and private gatherings will remain at a maximum of 10 people.

On May 4, public access to medical services will be reinstated, including access to dentistry, optometry, physical therapy, opticians, podiatry, occupational therapy and chiropractic treatment.

When it is not possible to physically distance, providers will be required to take precautionary measures as outlined by the Chief Medical Health Officer.

Low-risk outdoor recreational activities will be allowable with precautionary measures, including fishing and boat launches (May 4), golfing with physical distancing guidelines (May 15) and a fixed date (June 1) and clear guidelines for the operation of parks and campgrounds.

Phase Two – May 19 The second phase of the plan includes the May 19 re-opening of retail businesses and select personal services that were previously not deemed

allowable.

The size restrictions of public and private gatherings will remain at a maximum of 10 people.

A full list of retail businesses and select personal services that will be deemed allowable in phase two is included in the Re-Open Saskatchewan plan, along with guidance, protocols, and physical distancing measures that allowable businesses and services are required to observe.

Phase Three – date to be determined The third phase will be implemented following an evaluation of transmission patterns of COVID-19, and does not have a predetermined date. The third phase will include the re-opening of remaining personal services, along with the re-opening of restauranttype facilities, gyms and fitness facilities, licensed establishments and childcare facilities. Capacity limits will remain in some facilities, such as limits to 50 per cent of regular capacity for restaurants and licensed establishments.

All businesses and customers will be expected to maintain physical distancing practices, guidelines and recommendations.

Drinking/injecting bleach?! In our desperation, some have lost their minds These times are trying.

Down south, the insanity has reached DEFCON 3, nuclear-stupid with some drinking, snorting or even injecting bleach as a supposed cure for coronavirus.

The irresponsible comment comes from Donald Trump, President of the U.S. and supposed expert in “everything”.

Trump also suggested that isopropyl alcohol could kill the virus even quicker, prompting my pharmacist to look at me with a certain level of worry when I purchased a bottle of the stuff to clean the disk brakes on my mountain bike - honest!

Trump now says he was “just kidding”.

Still, the comments were troubling enough to prompt advisories from manufacturers of the products.

Now, “bleach remedies” are not a new thing, and supposed “experts” continually pose it as a cure-all. In a world where you have Tide Pod challenges and various other stupidities, the mere mention of a bleach cure from “The Greatest President, Ever!” is more than troubling. It’s criminal and irresponsible. But, what should you expect from someone who dips himself into a vat of orange tanning paint every morning?

Isopropyl alcohol will shut down your central nervous system. Drinking bleach will burn your esophagus, shut down your kidneys and will destroy organic material.

You are organic. So is your brain. Give it a chance. Start using it.

Sadly, those who voted for Donny didn’t use their grey matter anyway, so we have bleach shooters with isopropyl alcohol chasers, and hangovers that are deadly.

Why am I so hard on Trump? Some would argue he’s better than the lump we have, but I would argue that choosing who is better - Donald or Justin (or any world leader) - is a dog-turd eating contest - no one will win.

And you will need bleach afterwards.

Canadian farmers need real help now

Now, with COVID-19, they need us. Farming needs real help, right now.

Plenty of attention has been given to the foreign workers program in recent weeks. The federal government and the provinces have done the best they could to mitigate the situation.

But that was just the beginning. For farmers, the worst is yet to come.

Livestock is good place to start.

To date, at least seven Canadian meat processing plants have shut down due to at least one employee contracting COVID-19. More should be expected.

Closures can be quite disruptive to the entire supply chain. But the ones being affected most are farmers.

Bloomberg recently reported that thousands of pigs have been euthanized over the last few weeks and more are likely to suffer that fate. Some reports suggest more than 90,000 pigs are likely to be disposed of by farmers, who have no other option.

That’s just awful.

Shutdowns and slowdowns at several processing plants have created unmanageable backlogs.

In hog production, there’s little or no wiggle room.

When an animal is ready to be harvested, it needs to go or else costs go up.

promised and the animal might not comply with the market specifications rigorously imposed by processors and grocers.

Cattle ranchers in Western Canada are also being affected by meat processing woes. The production cycle is more forgiving with beef, but the industry went into this crisis with a significant backlog spanning many parts of the country. COVID-19 just made things worse.

Keeping animals too long in feedlots increases costs for cattle producers.

And livestock producers are receiving much less money for their products.

To the Editor, Before, I get into my letter, I would like people to know that I love dogs and cats.

So, you know this “Bone” I have to pick is with the owner’s of these pets.

Last time I looked around my yard, I don’t recall seeing a sign that read “Dog Walk Park.”

Yet, to my dismay , that is what it appear’s to be to these dog walking owner’s.

And, now I dread raking my lawn as I know that I will step into, well, “You Know What” not once, but two or three times.

As you can well understand by this point I’m not a happy camper!

Although I appreciate the two people I have seen pick up their deposit, sorry, you still leave the scent behind.

This occurs all summer long without fail. When I cut the grass I will surely step into a deposit or two.

Looking around town I see plenty of open spaces where one can walk their pet.

No one more than I would appreciate it if you made use of these FREE wide open spaces. I’m sure your pet will also.

restaurants. Mushroom growers in Canada are losing $400,000 a week and, as of yet, there are no COVID-19-related programs from government that can help them.

Many other groups are affected by the pandemic or will be sooner or later.

The United States government recently provided close to $19 billion to its farmers to offset the negative affects of COVID-19.

In Canada, programs such as AgriStability and

AgriRecovery are inadequate or irrelevant when it comes to dealing with COVID-19.

Agriculture is largely misunderstood in Ottawa and COVID-19 makes it painfully obvious. At its core, this is a very urbancentric government and its policies reflect that.

Most COVID-19 programs implemented by the federal government are needed to help keep the economy going. And the government has Continued on page 5

Chef Dez on Cooking: Garlic & Lemon Juice in Greek Cooking Of my cooking classes, Greek are the most popular by far and this stems from my own passion for the flavours of Greece.

Almost everyone I talk to loves Greek food and has frequented their local Greek Restaurants in the past many times.

People are always quick to mention their favourite ones and the best dishes that are served there.

You can easy make Greek food at home during this pandemic. I joke with people all the time that

to create Greek food one basically adds olive oil, garlic, lemon juice, and oregano to anything and it’s Greek.

Although t h e s e may be common denominators in many G r e e k recipes, there’s a bit more to it than that.

The most important thing to remember Chef Dez is ingredients from the source will always taste better in the final dish. Two ingredients that always come to mind when discussing this are

garlic and lemon juice.

Garlic should never come from a jar. I see people in stores buying these large jars of peeled, chopped garlic in brine and I question it. The response is usually “it’s cheap and convenient”.

Sounds like ‘fast food’ to me.

Just because something is cheap and convenient, doesn’t mean we should use it. Take any fresh cut vegetable (or fruit for that matter) and soak it in a jar full of brine - where does the flavour go? It leaches into the brine. So people who take a slotted spoon and add some of this garlic to a dish and say “I’m cooking with Garlic” - I respond and say “No, you’re cooking with a residual, that was once garlic, and now most of the natural flavour

has gone into the brine - which you’re going to dump down the drain in a year once you have gotten through that humungous jar”.

Many people also willingly pass through the produce section, walking by the lemons, on their way to the juice aisle to grab a bottle of lemon juice . . . again for the same reason “cheap and convenient”.

If you go to a lemon orchard, there are not bottles hanging from the trees. A reconstituted juice from concentrate will not give you the same flavour as what’s offered from a fresh lemon. Plus, you have the added bonus of reaping the aromatic and colourful zest from the outer peel to utilize as an additional ingredient or beautiful garnish.

We have to remember that the term “cheap and convenient” is not a synonym for “flavour” and if you want your Greek food, or any food, to taste better you need to go to the source of the ingredient you are adding for optimal results.

Greek Salad 2 long English cucumbers, diced large; 6-8 Roma tomatoes, diced large; 1 large yellow pepper, diced large; 1 large orange pepper, diced large; 1 medium to large red onion, diced large; 1 cup Kalamata olives.

Dressing: 1 cup olive oil; 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice; 3 tablespoons red wine vinegar; 2 tablespoons dried oreg-

ano; 2 garlic cloves, crushed; 2 tablespoons white sugar; salt and coarsely ground pepper to season.

Crumbled feta cheese to garnish 1.) In a large bowl, toss the vegetables and olives together.

2.) In a separate bowl, mix the dressing ingredients well and pour over the salad. Toss to coat.

3.) Garnish with crumbled feta cheese and season to taste with salt and pepper.

Phase Four – date to be determined The fourth phase will be implemented following an evaluation of transmission patterns of COVID-19, and does not have a predetermined date. The fourth phase will include the re-opening of indoor and outdoor recreation and entertainment facilities.

All businesses and customers will be expected to maintain physical distancing practices, guidelines and recommendations.

Other than in allowable businesses, the size of public and private gatherings will increase to a maximum of 30 people.

Phase Five – date to be determined

The fifth phase will be implemented following an evaluation of transmission patterns of COVID-19 and the preceding four phases, and will include the consideration of lifting long-term restrictions.

Monitoring Transmission of COVID-19 and Phase Advancement Criteria • As restrictions are gradually lifted, the Government of Saskatchewan and Dr. Saqib Shahab, Chief Medical Health Officer, will carefully monitor the daily number of reported cases and other important indicators. These factors will inform decisions regarding the pace at which the restrictions can be lifted or put back in place if required.

• Transmission is controlled;

• Health system capacities are in place to test, isolate and treat every case and trace every contact; • Outbreak risks are minimized in special settings like health facilities and nursing homes; • Preventive measures are in place in workplaces, schools and other essential places; • Importation risks can be managed; • Communities are fully educated, engaged and empowered to adjust to the new norm.

The plan will also provide clear guidance to the public so they can continue to follow current public health orders and prepare accordingly for lifting of restrictions.

A number of long-term measures and restrictions that are related to the highest risk areas will remain in place for the

foreseeable future.

These long-term restrictions include: Maintaining the current Provincial State of Emergency; Recommendations against nonessential international and interprovincial travel; Mandatory 14-day self-isolation following international travel, exposure to COVID-19, or a positive COVID-19 test; Visitor restrictions limited to compassionate reasons at long-term care homes, hospitals, personal care homes and group homes; The suspension of classes in all primary and secondary educational institutions, both public and private; and Large public gatherings remain prohibited.

The following recommendations should remain in place through all five phases: Protective measures for vulnerable

populations; Individuals should continue working from home if they can do so effectively; Physical distancing must be maintained, wherever possible; People must stay at home when they are sick; Vulnerable individuals, such as seniors and those with underlying health conditions, should continue to exercise caution and minimize highrisk exposures, such as public outings; Personal hygiene will continue to be a key prevention measure; Enhanced cleaning and disinfection should take place in workplaces, public spaces and recreational facilities; Although the public health order regarding the size of gatherings does not apply to businesses and workplaces, they are expected to follow the recommended public

health measures, including: physical distancing for staff and clients; regular cleaning and disinfection; frequent hand washing and sanitizing; use of PPE where available and appropriate; and keeping staff who demonstrate or report COVID-19 symptoms out of the workplace; and Long-term care and personal care homes must ensure that each staff member works in only one facility.

Re-Open Saskatchewan does not include service delivery plans for the Saskatchewan Health Authority. Resumption of elective surgeries, diagnostics and other nonessential procedures currently suspended as part of the COVID-19 system response will be considered separately, with updates on that plan coming in the near future.

Great Plains College, with support from the Ministry of Advanced Education, is encouraging students in need to apply for an Emergency Relief Bursary.

The bursary is meant to provide assistance to college students whose continued education is

at risk due to unexpected financial issues during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The Ministry of Advanced Education is providing an opportunity to help students meet essential needs when their educational program is disrupted due to the impact of COVID-19,”

says director of communications and development Carrie Voysey. “Great Plains College is going to match the amount provided by the ministry so in essence, we have approximately $73,000 to allocate to emergency bursary funds.”

One-time payments of

$750, $500 or $300 will be available to successful applicants that meet the student eligibility criteria.

“We are in an unprecedented situation,” says Voysey. “Within a very short timeframe, the college staff had to move to a work-from-home model

and students were presented with alternative ways to complete their programs, wherever possible. Everyone has been working hard to ensure student success. We are hoping this helps.”

You might blame COVID-19, but honestly the pandemic is not the only reason Earth Day generates limited interest.

Sadly, amid the naysayers and the vehement voices warning of climate change, the desire of some to end the disposal of plastics by offering alternatives, and those that seem blissfully not to care, and all the other arguments and debates about the ills of our world, most people seem at best ambivalent.

Perhaps itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a case where as individuals we feel ill-suited to impact the changes that are being suggested.

Impact Energy Services announced, April 22, the launch of their Pay It Forward To Support Local campaign.

While hundreds of businesses across the province and around the world are suffering from closed doors and decreased revenues, Impact Energy has launched a campaign to help weather this global phenomenon with a truly local concept.

The oldest man in the world celebrated his 112th birthday in isolation 20051pm0

Bob Weighton, the older man, is old enough that he survived the Spanish Flu, the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s last pandemic, along with two world wars.

He said that nothing in his 11-plus decades has prepared him for life under quarantine, during this coronavirus pandemic.

Weighton lives in an assisted living facility and they did arrange to have â&#x20AC;&#x153;Happy Birthdayâ&#x20AC;? sung to him during his birthday last Sunday. Of course, he kept a safe distance while listening to the song from his balcony.

He was also give a very memorable present, a plaque from Guinness World Records honoring him as the current hold-

er to the title of Worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Oldest Living Male.

He was awarded with the record after the former holder died on this past February 23. The previous record holder was 112 years and 355 days old when he died.

But it turns out that Weighton had mixed feelings about the honour. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t say I was pleased to hear the previous holder had died but I am very pleased that Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been able to live so long and make so many friends,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Even after living through what he did, Weighton just never thought or was prepared to live a life through something like the coronavirus. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is bizarre. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve never

experienced anything like coronavirus before,â&#x20AC;? he told the paper. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m a bit frustrated but then again Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been in situations where you just had to accept what was happening.â&#x20AC;?

Well Weighton was happy to accept the plaque, he did turn down a birthday card from Queen Elizabeth. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I had about 10 and I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t see why I should require the Queen to keep giving me cards,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It costs the taxpayer, not her, something, so I have selected one in which she is smiling, looking happy and contented and thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the one I like and I keep that.â&#x20AC;?

Schools closed for a couple weeks, to a month, and then for the rest of the year, and it all happened really fast.

Corona is here, and life as we knew it seemed to have changed overnight.

But there are a lot of good stories coming out of this all, and we are here for them. This heartwarming video shows happy news being shared, whether we are all in the middle of a pandemic or not.

A Michigan teen learned that she was valedictorian of her school while she was working for a fast food place. Michelle Floering, a secondary principal from Grand Traverse Academy, showed up to

Kaitlyn Watson’s job to share the huge announcement in person.

Floering shares a clip from the video she took, “Hey, so I’m at Culver’s where Kaitlyn Watson is working and I’m about to tell her a huge announcement.”

After getting her order from another employee, she asks to see Watson at the drive-thru window so that she can deliver the news to her.

“Hi Kaitlyn. So, I got you on camera because I want to announce something to you today,” she tells Watson. “You are GTA’s 2020 class valedictorian!”

Watson jumps for joy and exclaims, “I am? Oh

my gosh! Thank you so much!” Floering says, “You’re welcome. And I know we have to stay six feet away so I can’t give you a hug, but congratulations. Well deserved.”

Watson’s coworkers can be heard congratulating her from the background. The video was first shared by Watson’s school with the caption, “An extended school break and social distancing did not stop Michelle Floering, Secondary principal, from finding a way to give one of our seniors some exciting news! Congratulations, Kaitlyn!”

And from her personal account, Floering shared that this was, “Something to celebrate!!?”

From Bear to Biggar: The Town rises!

by Delta Fay Cruickshank for the Biggar Museum and Gallery The Earl of Southesk from Scotland came to this area in 1859, found and shot the trophy he came for, a Plains Grizzly Bear.

By 1886, more and more people were coming into the area, this time looking to stay and needing protection along the trail from Swift Current to Battleford.

The North West Mounted Police used the home of Frenchie Bernier near Argo Bush and called it the Sixty Mile Bush Outpost. Sixty miles from Battleford, the bush around Frenchie’s was a welcome relief, because there were no trees for firewood for a large portion of the route from Battleford. From Frenchie’s the police continued policing the trail to Swift Current where the Canadian Pacific Railway stopped. At this time, settlers from all Europe, Eastern Canada and the United States came looking for their “free” land.

Mr. and Mrs. J.G. Omrod arrived in 1908.

They were the first people to locate on the town site of Biggar: “Mrs. Omrod was the first lady to honour Biggar with her presence.” (from the Biggar World, Aug. 19, 1909).

She described Biggar as “veritable wilderness” when they first arrived and lived in a tent until they built their building, Ontario House, on First Avenue.

There was a jewellery store in the building, as well as a branch of the Merchants Bank. Rooms rented out for $1 to $1.25 a day. It was a three-storey building, on the second storey was the public hall where the Board of Trade held their meetings and where the sleeping rooms were.

It doesn’t say what was on the third storey, maybe that is where Mr. and Mrs. Omrod lived.

She sure would have had a lovely view from the top storey of that building.

They didn’t stay long in Biggar, as the Mrs. found it “intolerable” to live here much longer. They moved back to Saskatoon and continued with their church work and running businesses. (Source: The Independent, Biggar, Saskatchewan, March 18, 1920, page 5).

I don’t know why she was terribly unhappy here in Biggar, it was growing in leaps and bounds and all the services one would ever want were moving into town.

The very first newspaper was published August 19, 1909. It was the Biggar World, and the main headline read, *“Biggar . . . As “A City That is Sat on a Hill Cannot be Hid”. “On the wide prairies of Western Canada, the expansive unrest of human ambition supplies the friction of nature’s Aladdin’s Lamp and in response, beautiful towns and cities spring into existence by the magic influence as exemplified in Biggar . . .”

“Biggar in four month’s growth has thirty-two businesses, seventy-five dwellings and four hundred souls.”!

C.J. Dillingham was the publisher of the Biggar World and S. Dillingham was the managing editor.

It is not clear who wrote the very exuberant words, C.J. or S. of the Dillinghams, but they sure were confident in the future of Biggar.

It is written on the front page “The Location and Railway Facilities of Biggar Guarantee a Future”.

Under the headline of “Building Operations in the Lusty Town of Biggar” is written “No relaxation is apparent in the phenomenal building activity that has marked the meteoric growth of Biggar from a mere geometrical point on the wide western prairies to the dignity of an important and promising town . . .”

Already there is a Board of Trade and the businesses are advertising their wares. Alex Des-

Ed. H. Erickson has stoves and ranges. On Second Avenue, next door to the Post Office, Bethel, Traviss & Black General Store pays the highest prices for butter, eggs and farm produce, and provides groceries, staples and fancies, crockery and glassware. The Biggar Bakery and Refreshment Parlour has bread, pastry, ice cream, soft drinks and confectionary is on 2nd avenue as well. There were more general stores, lumber stores, butchers, hotels boasting of fine wines and first-class meals, liveries, building contractors, et cetera.

The streets were illuminated by gasoline lighting. The Biggar Brass Band was already enter-

taining the residents and talking about building a band stand.

It is amazing how fast this town was built, how in a year all these businesses popped up, without a brad nailer in sight!

OBITUARIES Robert Dale Wilkinson born March 11, 1948 passed away

peacefully after a very short battle with cancer on April 14, 2020 with his family close by.

Dale is survived by his three sons, Andrew (Carrie) and their two sons Kyren and Brayden; Jamie (Brette); Robin (Jennifer) son Anthony and daughter Brittney; brother, Donny (Karen); sister-in-laws, Kelly (Jim) Dwyer & Joyce Worthington; several nieces, nephews and extended family.

Dale was predeceased by his wife Edna Wilkinson (Scharf); parents, Robbie and Evelyn Wilkinson; Mother and Father in-law, Clarence and Queade Scharf; brother in-law, Jim Scharf.

Dale was born in Perdue SK and from an early age was born into farming with his dad Robbie and brother Donny. Dale and Donny farmed together after the passing of their father Robbie until 1989. Then Dale moved on to farm with the Scharf family. Dale worked on the Scharf farm until he retired at the age of 65. He would still work from time to time. Dale was a huge asset to the Scarf farm even after his retirement. From spring to fall work to giving a helping hand year-round whenever needed. He just couldn’t stay away from the farm life.

Dale grew up loving to go hunting with his brother and buddies. They took many trips around the province for some good hunts and great times.

Dale would also take the family up to the lake (Cochin) every summer.

The cabin was always full of kids and friends. There where so many great memories and friends from all those summers.

Over his retirement years Dale loved to just go “cruisin”, whether it be around Perdue checking on family, friends, or fields. Or stopping by his son Andrews to grab the paper and visit with his family and get the odd haircut. Or stopping by at coffee time to visit with his son Jamie and the boys at the Scharfs farm. Or heading down south to Avonlee to visit his son Robin and his family. Dale would also go for a drive to different towns and provinces just to see something he’d always wanted to see. Never fly...just get in his car and cruise.

Then the winters would come and Dale would love getting into his old Case tractor and plow snow for the odd friend. Never to early and never late at night. Just enough to keep him busy.

Dale was always in for a coffee around the local businesses in Perdue.

Keeping up on the local news you know. I’m sure all the old boys are going to miss his quirky laugh and laid-back opinions.

Dale was always willing to give a helping hand whenever needed. He was one of the good ol boys. Dale will be missed by so many. Loved always, remembered forever. Dale...a wonderful Son, Brother, Husband, Dad, Grandfather...but most of all....Friend.

As per wishes by Dale, there will be only a graveside service with family and friends at a later date.

The rhythm of sports has been shattered

There is a rhythm to the world of sports that has been irretrievably shattered in 2020, the year of COVID-19.

Hockey and basketball start in October, as football season is in midbash. Spring brings warm weather and the beauty of baseball, and hockey and basketball fans hunker down in front of their TV sets to watch the long roads to the Stanley Cup and the NBA finals. Golf - Thursday through Sunday weekly, like clockwork - never ends. We feign interest in the Boston Marathon on a Monday in April. Sports fans eagerly await Wimbledon and the CFL in July, hockey camps and the NFL opening in September.

And the perpetual circle of sports begins anew.

Until now. Pro golf is talking about a restart in mid-June, with no fans.
