With self imposed isolation, kids with birthdays may feel a little left out, but the Drive-By Birthday Squad, all courtesy of facebook group “Biggar Physical Distancing but Connecting”, has been making the rounds, helping people celebrate their special day. This past Friday, the group brought a parade of best wishes to three kids, with the Biggar Fire Department and RCMP joining in the joy. They continue to make their presence felt in this trying time, and encourage safe practices but adhere to the maxim of staying connected.

COVID-19 Update: Four new cases, 14 more recoveries, four in hospital As of April 6, Saskatchewan has four new, confirmed cases of COVID19, bringing the provincial total to 253. One hundred and sixty-nine of the cases are considered active.

These are confirmed cases, minus those reported as recovered and deaths. The active case count may be overestimated based on recovery information reported to date.

Currently, there are four people in hospital in the province. Two people are receiving inpatient care in Saskatoon, while two people are currently in intensive care – one in Regina and one in Saskatoon.

Fourteen more people have recovered from COVID-19 in Saskatchewan, bringing the provincial total to 81.

Of the 253 cases in the province: 112 cases are travellers; 77 are community contacts (mass gatherings included); 14 have no known exposures; and 50 are under investigation by local public health.

Overall in Saskatchewan: 127 of the cases are from the Saskatoon area, 51 from the Regina area, 47 from the north, 15 from the south, 10 from the central region and three from the far north; 11 cases involve people 19 years of age and under, while the remainder are adults; 110 cases are in the 20-44 age range; 89 are in the 45-64 age range; and 43 are in the 65-plus range; 53 per cent of the cases are males and 47 per cent are females.

Three deaths related to COVID-19 have been reported to date.

To date, 14,178 COVID19 tests have been performed in the province.

Saskatchewan continues to have the second highest rate of testing per capita among the provinces.

While all residents should stay home if they can, there are many essential workplaces throughout the province, including healthcare and industrial settings, grocery stores and supported and group living homes.

There continues to be a risk of local transmission in these essential workplaces and all employers and employees are reminded to practice prevention methods at all times – on the job site, in the breakroom or when working outdoors.

• Actively monitor for symptoms. At the first sign of cough, immediately self-isolate for 14 days.

• Practice physical distancing in the workplace, including those workplaces that are outdoors.

Maintain a two-metre separation between individuals.

• Wash your hands often.

• Cough/sneeze into your elbow or tissue and wash your hands immediately.

Workplaces must ensure their occupational health and safety guidelines are up to date and being enforced to prevent the transmission of respiratory illnesses.

While many grocery stores and retailers have taken steps to reduce crowding, you also need to do your part. If possi-

ble, only one person from a household should go shopping for essentials –

no more than once per week. Make a list ahead of time so you can shop

in an efficient manner instead of browsing.

A few things dealt with were three complaints of mischief, two Theft, two Traffic Safety Act infractions, one suspicious vehicle and two commercial Break and Enters.

Great work to everyone in our area that have been doing their part to help flatten the Covid 19 curve.

It is nice to see some of the innovative ideas coming out as people practice social distancing and the community spirit that everyone is still able to bring forth in these

unsure times such as the Birthday Drive-By’s.

Police continue to receive different information of crime from abroad. I will pass on another warning of scams for “Go Fun Me Fraud for Covid 19”. It can be difficult to tell which cause is legitimate and donors should scrutinize the cause before opening up their wallet. Scammers focus on taking advantage of kindness in times of crisis.

If you were getting bored of being indoors, it looks like mother nature has found a way of not making it as inviting to be out and about. At least we will get our exercise in with shovelling, hopefully for the last time.

Spring runoff already underway in southern parts of Saskatchewan: Flooding not anticipated

Snowmelt runoff is nearing completion in much of the southern half of Saskatchewan, while the rest of province is expected to experience a below normal to normal spring runoff, according to the updated spring runoff report issued by the Water Security Agency (WSA) Friday.

There are currently no areas within the province where WSA is expecting above normal flows or flooding situations.

Additional precipitation and/or a rapid melt could however result in higher runoff.

Well above seasonal temperatures during March, combined with

lower snowpack and moisture levels, resulted in spring runoff either beginning or being close to complete in much of southern Saskatchewan.

This includes all areas south of a line extending eastward from Macklin to Saskatoon and Saskatoon to Yorkton. Near normal to above normal pre-

cipitation was observed through central areas of the province in March.

This has increased the runoff potential through these areas, increasing it from below normal to near normal. An area encompassing west central Saskatchewan covering Meadow Lake, Lloydminster and Spirit-

wood is classified to have a normal runoff as is the extreme northwestern area of the province surrounding Uranium City.

The remainder of the province is expected to have a below normal runoff.

WSA has begun its normal spring operations of monitoring water basins

and operating its dam systems to bring lake levels under its controls up to their normal operating levels.

WSA will continue to monitor conditions and will provide further communications if warranted.

Reach out, let folks know you are there In a world of social distance, it is hard for humankind to maintain a wall around ourselves.

Social Distancing is hard. It could be as big a disease as the virus itself.

But we need to maintain that physical distance if we ever are going to beat COVID-19.

Did I mention this is hard?

We crave contact; we need interaction. The subtleties we find when we talk - the tilt of ones head while they listen, the movement of eyes, the curl of the mouth when they laugh or cry - it all adds up to what makes humanity human.

We need each other . . . close. And with self-imposed isolation, many are hurting.

It was a delight, however, to see a drive-by on Friday. Not a criminal hanging out of a car window, blasting away, but the Drive-By Birthday Squad, all courtesy of facebook group “Biggar Physical Distancing but Connecting”.

With their kids in tow, birthday salutations displayed, horns blasting and well wishes being shouted . . . it was remarkable! Biggar Fire Department, RCMP, Ambulance were getting in on the act, as well.

Now, it is no substitute for an actual party with cake, presents and hugs. But it truly touched those having a birthday and those participating.

The group has been doing some pretty unique and wonderful things, all maintaining physical distance. While the news networks go live with gloom and doom, every hour, on the hour, knowing that there are people out their - in our community, no less - who are willing to share their day, an idea, a laugh, is truly heart-warming.

But let me add. To those who don’t have social media - and there are many hit the phones, give a call and stay connected.

We may be in this for a good long while (let’s hope not!), and staying a part of the community and your family is as important now as ever before.

Will the economy ever recover?

by Roslyn Kunin What will happen to the economy once we get through this pandemic?

We’re coping day to day with social isolation and, for those of us lucky enough to still have work, the challenges of working from home or being out there in an infected world.

First, we want to know when all this will end.

The estimates we’re given range from weeks to months to years.

Even if we don’t know when, sooner or later we will get past COVID-19.

But what shape will the economy be in at that time?

Having gone through a plague, the last thing we want is to then be faced with a Dirty ‘30s-type depression.

Forecasting is always difficult, particularly when facing something very unusual. The last pandemic was the Spanish flu 100 years ago.

The world was much less

the

global and much less connected. It certainly was much less developed technologically, whether in communications, transportation, genomics or any other field.

So we really have no history to guide our outlooks.

Nevertheless, even if we can’t predict exactly what will happen, we may at least eliminate some unlikely possibilities.

While the pandemic lasts, the economy will remain as ill as many COVID-19 victims. Many businesses are closed or cutting back. Unemployment in a matter of weeks is moving from a 50-year low to a 50-year high.

The dramatic downturn led me to initially consider a V-shaped recession – a very steep and fast decline followed by an equally quick recovery.

Alas, the duration of the pandemic means that the resulting recession will be more of a U than a V. The bottom of the U will

last at least as long as the pandemic, and however long it will take to get consumers spending again and get businesses back up to speed. Some sectors (I’m thinking the cruise ship business) will take a very long time to recover and some businesses have already been laid to rest.

Now for some good news.

The economy will not be an L, falling dramatically and then creeping along the bottom indefinitely. That’s what happened in the 1930s, and it took Second World War to get the economy going again.

Government policy was one reason that the Great Depression lasted so long. Spending is what keeps an economy moving. When consumers and businesses don’t spend, government should start pumping money into the economy to get things going. In the 1930s, governments did the oppo-

site, sticking to balanced budgets and reducing their spending as the economy tanked.

But today, federal and provincial governments are ignoring their bottom lines and funding programs to help the people and firms affected by the pandemic.

The programs may not be perfect. Most seem to assume that Canadians still work in full-time, permanent jobs in medium to large companies.

However, many of us no longer do.

We will also be forced to while away the time of our social isolation on government web sites trying to figure out what benefits, if any, will apply to us and how to get them.

Most Canadians, once the pandemic is over, will be very happy to visit a restaurant or visit family in another city, and to start spending again.

The good news is that, historically, pandemics have been followed by

rising wages. In the past, that was due to the very large number of deaths and the resulting shortage of labour.

Today, we should be able to keep the number of deaths in check. But we were experiencing labour shortages in some parts of the country even before the pandemic and they will reappear as soon as it’s over. There will be work for all.

If the work that you’ve been doing doesn’t offer the pay and opportunities you would like, take advantage of your time at home to do some online learning and pick up a skill that will advance your career.

Finally, a story for all those whose businesses are on the edge or already over it.

My grandparents’ generation came as immigrants from Europe with $10 in their pockets and no language. They started a business. When the Dirty ’30s hit, it failed.

“What are we going to do?” cried one.

“Well,” said the other, “we still have the $10 we came here with and now we know the language.”

They started another business. By the time they left it to their children, it had hundreds of outlets.

The post-pandemic world will be different.

We’ll use technology more effectively, especially in fields like medicine and education. We’ll be less reliant on cars, doing more virtually.

We’ll deal with the danger of having a single supplier or customer by diversifying our suppliers and our customers. Trying to become self-sufficient in a global world would hit our standard of living too hard.

And we’ll see job markets, stock markets and our overall economy bounce back and continue to grow.

We just don’t know exactly when that will happen.

But all he could find there was eggy Hasein the term “alcoholic”, a genuine disease that far too many of us have been associated with. And Y.T. isn’t going to give out with any of his warped ideas on it!

It wouldn’t be fair though if he didn’t mention” Workaholics. We’ve all known these kind of people too and I’ve also looked that word up in the dictionary, but for some reason it isn’t there!

I suppose that the matmaking people (sentiment aside!) manufacture those ornaments in order to “up” their incomes, but morale-wise, they sure lower mine!

Statistics claim that sooner or later all Golfaholics end up at the other end of that grass they have played on for so long and that there is no known cure (including surgery!) for their ailment!

They tell me that the great Bing Crosby had an incurable case of it and was found dead on a Spanish golf course, wearing an odd smile.

Must have made a good shot, eh?

There are quite a few folks with what Yours Truly calls the “Sleepaholic syndrome” menCalvin Daniels tioned below, and it has always interested, sometimes aggravated, Y.T. to work with people like this who almost look half asleep all the time.

There are quite a few authentic diseases that result in drowsiness (narcolepsy is one of them!) and while Y.T. isn’t a medical type by a long shot, it always bothers him that as soon as the 5 o’clock whistle blows. these same drowsy people suddenly

It would be some kind of suicide to name some of the above sorts because, believe it or not, quite a few of them are in high social places.

There are other sleepaholics though, who at the expense of society, spend much of their time lazily lying on supplied sun porches somewhere.

Y.T. kind of doubts if sleepaholics ever seek medical help for their “condition”, when they enjoy it so much!

Y.T. hates to point out this malady because he has had the odd twinge of it’s terrible symptoms himself! “Wisecrackalism”, though seldom fatal, has spread all over the world and into many places. Mostly in solemn (often too solemn!) meetings, where in the midst of it’s serious discussions, these people make an outlandish and almost irrelevant statement!

Sufferers of this, should I say morbid complaint, seems to be people who have become “fed up” with the confusion of administration and the seemingly complete chaos

all around them!

There doesn’t seem to be much of a cure for this common ailment either, so I guess that we are just going to be stuck with it, eh?

Finally (wow! some of you did read this far!), the man with the pen . . . “Writeaholics” suffer from a mental condition brought on by people not listening to them!

Oh, they have intelligent things to say, alright but the ones who used to listen intently to them now turn away in midconversation and ask the nearest person what they think the weather is going to do!

Result . . . these writeaholics finally say “Darn it all. If they don’t want to listen, mebbe they can read!”

Science sez that the only cure for Writeaholism is to become deaf and blind, and finally kick the bucket!

So there you have it!, Y.T.’s personal rundown on these questionable diseases of our time!

There are as many “aholics” in the world as there are people!

and I know that they’re really living on the edge,” Nichols shares. “My other tenants are millennials who work at some venues and I knew they would also be impacted.”

“My thinking was, they might not be able to pay rent,” he says. “If they’re not making any money, they can’t pay me. It’s not like they’re going to somehow magically get money if they’re not working.”

Nichols decided to tell his tenants he was waving their rent payments for the month of April. He’s hoping that this move saves them the hundreds they would have paid in rent and that they can instead use the money for food and other necessities.

Nichols shared a post on Facebook and urged other landlords to help their

renters, too, if they can.

“I ask any other landlords out there to take a serious look at your own situation and consider giving your tenants some rent relief as well,” his message continued.

Lots have praised Nichols for his way of thinking and helping his renters, but they also point out that not all landlords can afford to do this and that lots of them rely on the rent payments of their tenants.

“I’m really grateful to have good tenants who I can trust and are reliable,” he says. “I don’t want to lose them and I’m grateful to them.” And helping ease stress during this unprecedented time is a sure way to keep those renters. Way to go, Nichols.

Chef Dez on Cooking Perfecting Gravy for Easter Dinner Have you ever had the misfortune of tasting gravy that was bland, watery, or as starchy as dragging your tongue across a pile of raw flour?

To say the least, it is not pleasant, and a far cry from serving its purpose: to enhance the food being served. To assist you in avoiding this mishap at your Easter dinner table, let us discuss the basics in perfecting gravy.

Gravies are considered sauces made with the pan drippings of either meat or poultry, and thus basics of sauce making are fundamental knowledge. The functions of sauces are to add flavour, moistness, richness and appearance to prepared foods. To achieve this, we need three elements of the sauce or gravy: a liquid, a thickener, and flavour. I realize ham is also very popular, but for this Easter example, the focus will be on turkey gravy.

The liquid for this gravy is simply the juice from the turkey with additional broth and/or wine.

The thickener will be a roux (pronounced ‘roo’), a cooked combination of equal weighed amounts of fat and flour. Additional flavours will be created from roasted vegetables, herbs, and seasonings.

Always cook turkey on

a rack inside the roaster as it prevents the bottom half of the turkey from boiling in its own juices.

Below the rack should be a combination of a few bay leaves with rough chopped onion, celery, carrot and garlic.

As the turkey cooks the liquid is needed for basting however excess juices should be removed occasionally (and reserved) to aid in the caramelization of the vegetables.

Once cooked, remove the turkey from the roasting pan, drain and reserve the remaining liquid and allow the fat and juices to separate. Add a bit of the fat back to the roasting pan along with some flour and cook on a medium-low heat stovetop with the vegetables for a few minutes. This process will cook out the starchy raw flour taste and help in the final browning of the vegetables. It should be fairly thick and pasty.

Slowly deglaze the pan with some white wine or broth. Deglazing is the process of removing the browned bits of flavour

Russian Theater Performing For One Spectator At A Time a time when a growing number of coronavirus cases are limiting outings and gatherings.

“We are ready to hold performances for one person because in the end ... one spectator has the same value as a full house,“ Marat Gatsalov, the theater’s principal stage director, said in a statement.

The theater, located in Perm, an industrial city 1,100 km (680 miles) east of Moscow, said it would shortly be accepting applications for those wanting to attend the performances alone.

It said that one of the

performers would choose the spectator in a draw, but that the chosen person would need to be screened by a doctor before entering the theater.

Russia has so far recorded 438 cases of the virus, as well as one coronavirus-related death.

The authorities have barred foreign nationals from entering the country until May in an effort to stop the coronavirus from spreading further, and have canceled or heavily restricted public gatherings.

From personal experience, my better half has made more buns and bread in the last two weeks than likely the last 10-years. If that continues into the future remains to be seen. Certainly the smell of fresh bread is one of the great pleasures of home baking and cooking, but homemade bread doesn’t fit quite as neatly in modern toasters, or as easily make a sandwich, and our world is all about convenience these days.

Still, there is an added feeling of security in terms of food for the table with a bag of flour in the cupboard, and the ability

We’ve gathered a list of five animals that mate for life to inspire you to make it through quarantine without buddy-swapping.

Penguin Shedd Aquarium in Chicago took the Internet by storm. They tweeted videos of their penguins exploring the shut-down aquarium. Two of their rockhopper penguins, Edward and Annie, toured several exhibits before heading back to their enclosure and starting their nesting behaviors such as gathering rocks, grass, and branches to keep their eggs safe.

Dik-Dik The dik-dik is a tiny antelope native to Eastern and Southern Africa.

They get up to 13 pounds and just over a foot tall at the shoulder. While they mate for life, the dik-dik protect each other with their exceptional eyesight. While one of the pair sleeps or eats, the other stands guard still and keeps lookout. You and your quarantine buddy are probably doing something similar, taking turns looking out the window, or scrolling through Netflix. Unlike you, the dik-dik can run up to 26 mph if needed.

Albatross These sea birds have the largest wingspan at 11 feet, and they live upwards of 50 years.

On the Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge in Hawaii, over a million albatross gather to mate, lay eggs, and raise their young together. The oldest bird on the Atoll is 65, a female names Wisdom who scientists tagged back in 1956. Since then, she’s flown over 3 million miles. Mating is the only reason albatross land, otherwise they engage in migratory behavior, riding ocean winds for hours at a time. Must be nice.

Beavers are remarkable because they engineer their needs from their environment. They build dams to create ponds, and lodges for their families to inhabit, all with just their massive front teeth. Use the beaver as inspiration for starting a craft project with your quarantine buddy.

Black Vultures If you run out of supplies, channel the aggressive black vulture before heading into the world.

They live in small flocks that circle high while foraging. Their primary food source is carrion, which they’ll chase other scavengers off of; but they also eat the live young of larger mammals, birds, lizards, and sea turtles.

They also, like you may in a few weeks, eat rotting vegetables, and scraps from garbage dumps.

They’re monogamous, and scientists believe they mate for life, staying together year round. Just like you and your quarantine buddy.

Adhanom Ghebreyesus described what he felt were â&#x20AC;&#x153;alarming levels of inactionâ&#x20AC;? in regard to preventing the spread of COVID-19.

Understanding COVID19, including the threat it poses and how itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s transmitted, is of the utmost importance. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there is still much to learn about COVID-19, including how it spreads.

However, the CDC notes the following are some ways that researchers, as of March 2020, feel that the virus is transmitted.

Person-to-person Researchers who have studied the virus feel that it is spread mainly from person-to-person. People who are within six feet of one another may spread the virus through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of those who are nearby or poten-

tially be inhaled into the lungs.

The CDC notes that the virus is contagious, and that people might be most contagious when they are at their sickest. Symptoms of COVID-19 include difficulty breathing or shortness of breath, persistent pain or pressure in the chest, new confusion or inability to arouse, and bluish lips or face. Additional symptoms may be associated with COVID19 as researchers learn more about the virus, and people who experience anything unusual should discuss their condition with a physician immediately.

Researchers also suspect that the virus may be spreading through people who are asymptomatic.

So even people who do not feel sick or exhibit signs of sickness may unknowingly have the virus, potentially making them capable of spreading it.

Contact with surfaces

The CDC notes that researchers do not suspect that contact with contaminated surfaces or objects is the main way the COVID-19 virus is spreading. However, the CDC also notes that it may be possible for people to get the virus by touching surfaces of objects that have the virus on them and then touching their own mouths, noses or possibly their eyes. The relative infancy of COVID-19 means researchers have yet to fully understand how the virus is transmitted.

Understanding COVID19 also involves staying up-to-date on local announcements about the virus and adhering to any restrictions government officials put in place.

People living in or near areas where others have been diagnosed should follow all protocols put in place by the government to reduce their own and their neighboursâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; risk of exposure to the virus.

4 strange facts about quarantines Depending on where you live, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re already experiencing the first trembles of cabin fever from self-quarantine, or youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re bulk-buying pasta and toilet paper to get ready for it.

In the best of situations, quarantine is no picnic, but staying home to isolate from others is a lot better than the quarantines some people experienced throughout history.

Here are four strange historical facts about quarantine.

The word quarantine comes from Italy The bubonic plague used to be much more prevalent across the world.

Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s still, on average, seven cases of plague in the United States each year. Back in the 14th century, 20 million Europeans died from bubonic plague.

The bustling port city of Venice was having none of it. They built an off-shore â&#x20AC;&#x153;hospitalâ&#x20AC;? on the island Poveglia and required docking vessels to wait on the island 40 days before allowing either the sailors or the cargo ashore. They called it quarantinario, after the Italian word for 40.

There are still 1500 bodies in a mass grave on the island to this day and

quarantinario eventually became quarantine.

Astronauts are quarantined NASA quarantined astronauts in a mobile quarantine device that, if you look closely, is just a converted Airstream trailer.

Prior to testing the moon samples, scientists didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know exactly what they might deal with. Parasites, moon viruses, or infectious bacteria were all possible in the petri dish before they confirmed the moon really was just a lifeless rock.

Astronauts spent 21 days in quarantine when they arrived back from space.

They abandoned the practice after the Apollo 14 mission.

Typhoid Mary spent her life in quarantine Mary Mallon was a carrier of typhoid, but immune to its symptoms. And, unfortunately for the residents of New York, she was a passionate cook.

As a typhoid outbreak ravaged the city, detectives tracked her down as the source of the outbreak and apprehended her. Authorities granted her freedom, as long as sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d abstain from cooking for the public. But Mallonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s zeal for making peach ice cream drew her back to her preferred pro-

fession.

In 1915, police sent her to North Brother Island to live out the rest of her life in quarantine. Her home, while in disrepair, still exists on the island.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s closed to the public, but maintained by the New York Parks Department.

Anthrax Island During World War II, the British suspected they could use the deadly bacteria anthrax to cause devastation to German cities across multiple generations.

Inhaled, anthrax is almost always deadly, but the spore-producing bacteria causes more lasting damage by infecting livestock and soil.

To test the theory, the British released anthrax onto Gruinard Island, off the coast of Scotland.

The test was such a success, that 50 years later the island was still quarantined for being highly toxic to people.

Activists in the 1980s mailed envelopes of dirt from Gruinard Island to politicians, demanding the removal of the contamination.

After extensive treatment with formaldehyde and seawater, officials declared the island safe in 1990.

NC Deputy arrests 100-year-old woman for indecent exposure Who doesn’t love birthdays?

Whether they go exactly how you want them too, or if they don’t, you can almost always look back on them fondly.

Well, Ruth Bryant certainly had a birthday to remember. On her 100th birthday, she got to cross off a major item from her bucket list.

Bryant, a Roxboro, North Carolina resident, was celebrating her 100th birthday when police arrived at Cambridge Hills Assisted Living Center. Her family and friends had all gathered, and a Person County Deputy approached with handcuffs asking “Are you, Miss Bryant?”

Bryant responded saying “Depends on what you want.” The officer said, “Here’s what I want, I want you!”

The officer told her she was wanted for indecent exposure. Bryant was handcuffed to her walker and brought to the police car. She pretended to put up a fight, playfully kicking the officers. One deputy said, “Don’t kick me; I’ve got a bad knee!” To which Bryant said, “I’ve got two bad knees!” Bryant spent no more than a few minutes in jail. She then received an orange jumpsuit that read ‘Person County Jail.’ Bryant said “I’m in the jailhouse now! I finally got here!”

She then hugged the chief jailer and returned to her assisted living center, where the other residents, family, and friends were waiting to cut the cake.

Bryant left her daughter, Marian Oakley, out of the plan. She said that she didn’t know what to make of the events.

“I know that she is a hundred-year-old, but I didn’t know that they’d be going this far.”

She was startled by the sirens even before they entered and took her mother, Oakley said.

Next time, she’ll have to let her daughter in on the plan!

Regardless of whether you’re experienced in taking on weird and wonderful hobbies or are looking to venture out of your comfort zone to try something different this year, here is a list of some unusual hobbies you may never have thought about: Tree Shaping If you’re someone who loves being up, close and personal with nature, tree shaping may be an option to think about.

This practice has been around for hundreds of years and is the art of forming structures from trees with techniques such as carving, bending, weaving, framing and braiding. If you consider yourself a bit of a creative individual, you could even go as far as constructing your own furniture from tree trunks – although it

may take you some time to get the hang of it as an amateur.

Formula 1 Betting While betting is wellknown in the world of boxing and team sports, the popularity of Formula 1 betting 2019 is certainly growing. Unlike other sports, the unpredictable nature of Formula 1 gives viewers a real adrenaline rush, (without having to do anything physically extreme) as even the slightest error or pit stop could change the whole dynamics of the race. Betting allows you to get more involved in the action of the race by analyzing the driver’s ability, alongside the performance of the car to work out who will win.

Wingsuit Flying Now, we all wish we had the power to fly, but now you can get a rough idea of what it would be like by wingsuit flying. Do be aware that this sport isn’t for the faint-hearted, as it’s reported to be the cause of one death for every 500 jumps.

Back in the 1930s, the wingsuit was designed from a blend of wing bone and canvas, but luckily, they’re much more safe and functional these days. On average, you’ll fly approximately

7.5 kilometres of distance and perhaps even further on particularly windy days.

Unless you’re experienced in skydiving, you won’t be able to get your hands on a wingsuit.

The U.S government has a law in place, requiring that the individual should have carried out a minimum of 200 jumps beforehand. It’ll also cost you approximately $500 to hire a wingsuit.

Extreme Ironing If you have too much housework to make time for hobbies, why not combine the two? Extreme ironing has now become a sport in its own right, which involves taking your ironing board to the most bizarre locations.

This extreme sport began back in 1997 by Phil Shaw, who was forced to choose between finishing his ironing and going rock climbing with friends; so, he cleverly merged the two together.

Over the past 15 years or so, the sport has significantly grown in popularity and extreme sports enthusiasts have been photographed ironing their clothing in the most peculiar locations; including on kayaks, cliff edges and even highways!

Our town keeps it together

by Delta Fay Cruickshank for the Biggar Museum and Gallery I got a warm fuzzy feeling this weekend looking on Facebook and seeing a birthday parade going by Macy and her family.

Thinking about what is going on now during this pandemic and thinking about the history of our town too . . .

There is a school of thought that when this is over, will we go back to â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;normalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;? How will â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;normalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; be after this is over?

What have we learned about ourselves during our lockdown period?

When the soldiers came home from the First World War, they brought with them the Spanish Flu. More people died from the flu then the five years of war. The first pandemic our town pulled through together and it kept on growing.

The population of the RM of Biggar did get smaller, because so many men died in another country as result of war or because of the flu.

Mechanization was starting to take over . . . using more horses as our agricultural models on exhibit show. Farming in the 20â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s meant using up to 12 horses to prepare the soil.

And yet our town still provided the supplies, schools and medical attention. Stores changed hands; businesses continued to open, churches opened, people still moved into town and the families grew.

The Dirty Thirties brought the drought, and once again the population of the RM got smaller, farms got bigger, and fewer people stayed on the farm. After the second World War, the horses no longer provided the horsepower, it was the tractor. I know that after the war, families left the farm and moved on to other provinces looking for work that provided a pay cheque.

And yet, Biggar was a very busy town, it was actually busy right up onto the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;60â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s. I have so many stories about the street being packed on a Saturday with people coming in from the farms, visiting and getting their shopping done.

There were more dances closer to town, the Beanery at the train station at the end of Main Street being a place to have a cup of coffee at 3 in the morning after a country dance. The weekly papers were filled with meetings for club members, town

During our lockdown to prevent our neighbours from falling ill, the families in town are spending more time together. Not too many of us are whipping off to the city to shop and to take in events.

I wonder if our reliance on the city will diminish and weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll find that staying home is just safer and feels better?

Our town is witnessing so much generosity. Look at the time Dâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Shae at the

Seems like everyone wants to help each other.

The birthday parades are wonderful! Even though we canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t embrace our neighbours and friends right now, we are doing that in different forms. I loved that the firetruck and ambulance were there to be in the parade, just to reassure us all that we have the people in town that want to look after us!

The Food Hampers, the deliveries still going on . . . we are fortunate to have so many generous souls in our town.

The grocery stores are open and working so hard, taking chances everyday to make sure we all keep eating! The pharmacies stay open, the hardware stores are still providing their products. The hearts, Easter eggs and teddy bears in the windows for our young citizens to have an adventure on their walks.

The teachers online giving our students lessons and exercises to keep their minds alert and still learning.

I know that we cannot go back, but maybe we can kindle some lost feel-

ings of dependence on each as a community and stay home.

I believe that feeling that we are all connected, we are one, we are united, is being intensified. We are so fortunate that our town is still here after all the tragedies in history. and here we are again, helping each other and getting through it . . . together.

ASSAILLY, Mary Ann June 5,1943-March 28,2020 The family of Mary Ann Assailly are saddened to announce her passing on March 28,2020 at Oliver Lodge in Saskatoon, Sk. Mary Ann was born in the nursing home at Walton On Thames, England to John and Olive Herity and spent her formative years living above her Grandads pub, the Old Plough, in Stoke d’ Abernon Surrey. She and her mother sailed to Canada on the TSS Letitia in 1946 with a boatload of British War Brides and their children arriving at Pier 21, boarding a train and traveling to Edmonton. She spent her childhood in south side Edmonton and Biggar, SK where she graduated from High school and then trained as a Psychiatric Nurse in Weyburn. Mary Ann married Roger in 1966 and they enjoyed two girls, Merrilee, Melonie and in 1994 she was found by birth daughter Gina.

Gifted with nine grandchildren, two step- grandchildren and nine greatgrandchildren.

Mary Ann was truly blessed to enjoy family and friends. She was pre-deceased by her parents John (Jack) and Olive (Dixie) Herity, in-laws Albert and Marjory Assailly, sister-in law Arda Wiebe and son-in-law Kevin Redlick.

Survived by her husband of 54 years Roger.

Daughters Gina (Iver) Martinson, Merrilee (Greg) Lynes and Melonie Redlick.

Grandchildren Stacey (Zane) Lambert, Ashley (Chris) Craik, Dylan (Haley) Redlick, Spencer ( Kristine) Martinson, Hayden Redlick, Ashley Dent, Jordan (Ryan) Karppinen, Owen (Jocelyn) Redlick, Lexi Dent, Brandi (Jesse) Como and Ryan (Jessica) Lynes.

Precious Great Grandchildren: Drew Redlick, Beau Como, Austin Lynes, Bennett Redlick, Wells Como, Leo Redlick, Everhett Lambert, Miller Redlick and Brooks Lynes.

Brother Rick (Sandra) Herity, sister Susan Herity, brothers and sister in-laws, Bill Wiebe, Jim (Darlene) Assailly, Shirley (Wally) Nicklin and Eugene (Karen) Assailly.

Numerous nephews and nieces. Aunt, uncles and cousins in England and the United States.

As well a special refugee family Qasan, Hiba, Haidar, Yousif and Razan.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society or Emmanuel Anglican Church & Refinery Arts & Spirit Centre.

Cremains interned at St. John’s Anglican Cathedral Columbarium and a celebration of life will be announced at a later date.

Goofiest team names? Lakers, Jazz, Flames Have you ever wondered why the National Basketball Association team in Los Angeles is called the Lakers? Does it make sense for a team sitting right beside the largest ocean in the world is called the Lakers, when there is nary a lake of any consequence for a few hundred miles, at least?

Well, there’s a simple explanation, of course.

The Lakers’ franchise originated in Minneapolis, which sits within the state of Minnesota, which boasts “Land of 10,000 Lakes” as one of its most famous mottos. But when the Lakers’ franchise moved to Los Angeles, the team name accompanied it. Rather than the Los Angeles Stars, or the Wildfires, team owners simply kept the Lakers’ name.

Which takes us next to Salt Lake City, headquarters of the Mormon church and home to perhaps the largest segment of religious people in North America. That city’s basketball team is called the Jazz, which makes no sense at all. “Hymnsingers’ or ‘Prayers’ might be a more appropriate nick-

name, but the Salt Lake City franchise moved from its original home in New Orleans, where Jazz was totally appropriate for a team moniker.

This weird-name situation has even crossed the border.

The Atlanta Flames, so named because of the great Atlanta fire of 1917 which destroyed 1,900 structures and caused 10,000 people to be homeless, moved to Calgary in 1980 and the team’s flaming ‘C’ logo is ubiquitous across the province. But those who didn’t know the Atlanta-connected history of the franchise might wrack their brains trying to figure out why a Calgary team is called the Flames. Floods, perhaps. Foothills, perhaps.

Even Financiers. But not Flames.

Which takes us next to Winnipeg, the beneficiary of the second failed iteration of an NHL franchise in Atlanta - the Thrashers. Not convinced that fans in Georgia didn’t give a hoot about professional hockey, the league granted Atlanta its second-time-around franchise in 1997 and it took

6 Deadly Pandemics in History Pandemic refers to an outbreak of an infectious disease that spreads across borders.

In recent history, flu pandemics are the most common. Further back, bubonic plague was much more prevalent and responsible for devastating the populations of entire countries.

The bubonic plague still exists in over 20 countries, while there hasn’t been a case in Europe for over 50 years, or in the United States since 1925.

Now, flu epidemics are much more common, and while not as deadly, soon develop into pandemics in packed urban areas and through international travel.

San Francisco Plague, 1900-1904 This is the first instance of bubonic plague in the United States. Of the initial 121 cases, 119 died.

While San Francisco committed to killing as many rats as possible to quell one of the disease’s vectors, scientists discovered the California ground squirrel also carried the infection. As a result, bubonic plague spread across the western United States as the rural

plague.

Spanish Flu, 1918-1920 Across the globe, including remote regions in the Arctic and on isolated islands, an outbreak of H1N1 infected 500 million people and caused the deaths of 50-100 million. During World War I, it spread fast because of the close quarters in the trenches and the troop’s malnourishment. In general, the very young and old are most at risk during flu outbreaks, but the Spanish flu seemed to target a disproportionate number of young adults.

Hong Kong Flu, 19681969 An H3N2 virus that began in Hong Kong but soon spread to the United States. Worldwide it killed over a million people.

Hippocrates, the Greek physician, first described influenza in 412. Since then there’s been a worldwide flu pandemic every 10-30 years.

Cholera Pandemic, 18521860 There have been seven cholera pandemics throughout history and across the world. This outbreak, considered the most deadly, killed over

a million Russians. Hundreds of thousands died in the UK, Spain, and Mexico. The most recent cholera pandemic was in the ‘60s and ‘70s affecting Indonesia, India, and Russia.

Plague of Justinian, 541542 This is the first recorded outbreak of bubonic plague. It started in Constantinople and moved across Mediterranean port cities. At its worst estimates say it killed between 5,000 and 10,000 people a day.

Worldwide 25 million died, and Europe’s population decreased by 50 per cent.

The Black Death, 13461353 This outbreak of the bubonic plague would set off a cycle of European epidemics every few years through the 18th century. Once again, by the 1370s, it reduced England’s population by 50 per cent, with urban areas suffering the most.

Now it’s believed fleas travelling on rats aboard ships carried the plague across three continents, killing 75 million people worldwide.

Mixed Doubles a treat for Barber, Heidt . . . Biggar’s Brett Barber and Kerrobert’s Mitch Heidt really enjoyed the mixed doubles curling this season. The pair have curled together over the last 18 years in mixed and fun ‘spiels, and were is their second year of mixed doubles. They were in Prince Albert for the Provincial Qualifier, earning a qualifying berth; were in Humboldt this past February where they just missed out going into the playoffs. “What I love about mixed doubles [is the] games are very fast paced, different strategy, team dynamics are easier, lighter atmosphere with a social aspect,” Brett explained. “Very popular in smaller countries around the world because it’s easier to have two athletes opposed to four to eight men’s/women’s to commit to be professional athletes.” (Submitted Photo)
