Moe announces financial support plan for employers and employees Premier Scott Moe has announced a significant financial support plan for Saskatchewan employers and employees hit by the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“During this time of great uncertainty, it is of the utmost importance that Saskatchewan people know their government is here to provide support,” Moe said. “This plan supports businesses and employees. Most importantly, it supports the opportunity to come back to work when we emerge from the COVID19 crisis.”

The financial support plan outlines a number of mechanisms for reducing costs for businesses and individuals, providing support to self-employed individuals not covered by new federal support measures, and establishes a Business Response Team designated to support Saskatchewan businesses during this time of uncertainty.

Administered by the Ministry of Finance, the Self-Isolation Support Program will provide

$450 per week, for a maximum of two weeks or $900. The Self-Isolation Support Program is targeted at Saskatchewan residents forced to self-isolate that are not covered by recent federally announced employment insurance programs and other supports. The program is designed to ensure that all Saskatchewan residents are covered by either a federal or provincial program to ensure no one is faced with choosing to work instead of protecting their family and community from COVID-19 by self-isolating.

The program is anticipated to cost a total of $10 million and will mostly benefit self-employed residents of Saskatchewan that meet the following eligibility criteria: • They have contracted COVID-19 or are showing symptoms; • They have been in contact with an individual infected with COVID-19; • They have recently returned from international travel and have been required to self-

isolate; and • If they are not eligible for compensation including sick leave, vacation leave from their employer • If they do not have private insurance covering such disruptions • If they are not covered by other programs such as federal employment insurance that has been updated.

Effective immediately, Saskatchewan businesses who are unable to remit their PST due to cash-flow concerns will have relief from penalty and interest charges. Over the course of these three-months; government estimates a potential deferral of up to $750 million in PST collections. Businesses that are unable to file their provincial tax return(s) by the due date may submit a request for relief from penalty and interest charges on the return(s) affected.

At this time, audit program and compliance activities have been suspended to allow businesses time to focus on

the health and safety of their customers and staff, reduce impacts to their business operations, and minimize the spread of the virus through reduced audit travel.

Earlier this week, government announced a crown utility interest deferral program waving interest on late bill payments for up to six months. Effective immediately, the crown utility interest deferral program is available to all crown utility customers.

Effective immediately, a six-month student loan repayment moratorium has been put in place, mirroring a similar federal provision. This provides individuals with student loans immediate relief, and comes at a $4 million cost to the provincial government.

In addition to changes made to changes to The Saskatchewan Employment Act that introduced a new unpaid public health emergency leave and removed the 13-week employment require-

ment to access sick leave and the requirement for a doctor’s note to access sick leave, The Employment Standard Regulations have been amended to: • Ensure that during a public emergency, businesses will not have to provide notice or pay in lieu of notice when they layoff staff if it is for a period of 12 weeks or less in a 16-week period.

• And if an employer lays off employees periodically for a total of more than 12 weeks in a 16-week period, the employees are considered to be terminated and are entitled to pay instead of notice as outlined in the Act. This will be calculated from the date on which the employee was laid off.

These amendments create a balance for employers and employees where the difficult decision may be made to layoff employees due to public health emergencies. In this circumstance, employees would have immediate access to new federal

employment insurance programs, while keeping employers financially stable to ensure employees have a job to return to.

To provide support to Saskatchewan businesses seeking to navigate the uncertain conditions caused by COVID-19, the Government of Saskatchewan will be establishing a single window information web page for businesses to access information and receive timely updates on provincial support initiatives. This will be complemented by the establishment of a Business Response Team, led by the Ministry of Trade and Export Development, which will work with businesses to identify program supports relevant to particular businesses. Once the Business Response Team has been established, contact information will be communicated to the public, and to local chambers of commerce for dissemination to chamber membership.

Barber wins Rosebud

It was a Rosebud win in Rosetown of Brett Barber’s Biggar rink this past March 14.

Barber with lead Laura Kowalchuk, second Joan Larlham and third Shannon Morgan, took their final game in six ends, 5-1, versus the Tara Nishet rink.

With the current crisis, taking a win was a sweet

way of ending the curling season. An event in Medicine Hat was cancelled, and the Rosetown win was both rewarding and fun for the Biggar rink.

Barber’s rink stole three in the early part of the final game after a Nishet draw was light in the first and a takeout kissed a guard, looking at two in second. Nishet recorded

her lone marker in the third, but called it a game after six ends.

The family affair of Barber, Morgan, Larlham and Kowalchuk, reached the Rosetown Rosebud final after a win over Kristin Lefebvre.

Biggar RCMP report

by Cpl. Dereck Crozier, Biggar Detachment, NCO IC This past week Biggar RCMP responded to 26 calls for service.

Over all the amount of traffic moving around has completely dropped off with only three traffic safety tickets being issued. There were six traffic related complaints from suspicious activity, to just playing load music and revving engines too loudly.

There were five calls for domestic/breach of peace calls with the majority involving alcohol. Four minor theft complaints and one ATV collision

with injury on private property.

As the snow disappears and we are coming into spring. This is a good chance to remind ATV users the importance of using helmets with recreation vehicles. Yes, even side by sides (UTV’s) require helmets be worn.

Mishaps can happen at anytime and you never have any warning. The majority of accidents and deaths involving recreational vehicles happen on the persons own property.

Scam artists have also been busy at finding new ways to relieve you of your hard earned cash

with Covid 19. We have not had any complaints yet but other areas are reporting text messages that look like it comes from the Canadian federal government where the scammers are impersonating officials from health and human services agencies. These text messages are designed to obtain your personal and financial information.

Also be aware of investment fraud style scams from callers saying they have a cure for Covid 19.

If your receiving a cold call from a person or agency that you did not initiate, simply hang-up the phone.

Nothing “normal” about these times I’m going to need severe dental work very, very soon.

Every time I tune in to the TV talking heads of the major networks, I get to witness the sheer stupidity of some blow-dried, script reader, talk about these times as “The New Normal.”

I’m grinding my teeth - turning them to powder.

All the while, they smile, give out quick tips on “fun” things to do while “Socially Isolating”.

Stop it. You sound like a Toronto Maple Leaf fan. You know the type always believing the Leaf’s have a chance in the post season - a mixture of denilal and delusion written on their face.

With these uncertain times, calling the mess out there “normal” is just plain idiocy.

I’m not saying we should chew our nails to the bone, start hoarding toilet paper. Instead, recognize that it is a troubling time, then do everything in your power to make your little piece of the world safe and safe for others.

Don’t try to normalize it. That just sends the wrong message and will lead to many just throwing their hands up in the air and saying, you know . . . something that precedes “it” and starts with an “f”.

Fudge?!

Where were we? Oh yeah . . . “New Normal”!

I know the news cycle is, well, one item: COVID this, COVID that. This is going to be how it is for some time. We’ll adjust. We’ll make the changes.

We’ll do our part and survive. For some, social media has been a blessing.

For others, it leaves one empty - family so close but so far. Social media doesn’t capture the idiosyncrasies of being in a room with family, sharing a laugh, a meal.

Separated by distance and borders is not”Normal.”

Cherish the times you can actually spend with family. For those who can’t, “New Normal” is like pouring gasoline on an open wound.

But we will make the best of it. And one day - hopefully sooner than we think - we really can be back to “Normal”.

Remarkable pandemic response prompts look at South Korea

Without modern precedent, the rapid and evolving response to the novel coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic is rooted in a simple principle: we give the virus fewer targets by physically distancing ourselves, relentless hand washing and staying inside.

And for good reason.

As easily transmissible as the common cold through respiratory droplets, this virus is much worse than a cold or the seasonal flu.

While it can infect anyone, a preliminary review done on the last month’s American cases by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that between 1.8–3.4% of all infected patients died.

And while many infected people had minor symptoms, 15-20% of infected adults were admitted to hospital; and of those patients 12-50% needed intensive care unit (ICU) treatment. The higher range numbers are for

Having learned lessons from its 2015 failure to contain a MERS outbreak, South Korea took an aggressive approach which Science Magazine describes as “the most expansive and well-organized testing program in the world”. With 360,000 tests completed, South Korea started testing people with symptoms and then moved to indiscriminate, mass testing which resulted in the discovery of many asymptomatic patients.

According to the Wall Street Journal, South Korea has tested at least 20,000 people a day at 633 testing sites, even at nationwide roadside drive-through testing tents. Test results are texted to patients within a day and citizens use

a smartphone app with GPS mapping locators that track the spread of the infection, even notifying users when they’re within 100 meters of an infected location.

The tests are followed up by rigorous contact tracing where infected people and anyone they have come in contact with are identified, isolated, quarantined and closely monitored. At the same time, high level anti-infection procedures are followed anywhere that vulnerable people are, from nursing homes and care centres to the families of people with compromised health.

While South Koreans have endured some of the same things we have, as businesses have closed, and there’s been working from home, kids off school and life in seclusion, they have taken the battle straight to COVID19 and knocked down

the infection rates and deaths.

There are hopeful signs in Canada that we’re overcoming the testing challenge with over 130,000 tests completed, a promise of 10,000 per day, and orders placed for two types of diagnostic test kits – one from Switzerland, the other from a U.S. company -- that will enable faster detection of the virus, and results processed in hours.

The sooner we get on top of this virus, the sooner our lives and economy can return, the damage repaired and this remarkable chapter of our lives put behind us.

And even at that, having singled out one of his thousands, could we prove that they were our ancestors more than 100,000 other people?

The Book of Chronicles probably has a hundred other messages in it that Y.T. doesn’t see, but, I think, even that is a plus because possibly we will find them in there at a more meaningful time!

A lot of names (and sometimes I nearly forget my own!) don’t mean a heck of a lot to Yours Truly. As far as he is concerned, one could put Joe, Bill, Jack, Nick or Mike in those versus instead of Mahaletet, Japheth, Mesheak and Dipath.

The Book doesn’t say so but I’ll bet that some of those guys were called “Sham”, “Shorty”, “Curly” and even “Hook” (Hello, Bob Mathieu!)

It would be nice to think that all of our ancestors did only good things, but I am afraid that in the eyes of some people, our best intentions have been looked on as mistakes (politicians know all about this one!)

New money aids Saskatchewan’s search for COVID-19 vaccine

The Government of Saskatchewan and the Federal Government are committing $28 million to help Saskatoon researchers find a vaccine for COVID-19.

Funding from both the province and Ottawa will support the University of Saskatchewan’s Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization – International Vaccine Centre (VIDO-InterVac).

The lab is one of the most advanced infectious disease research facilities in the world and has been evaluating COVID-19 vaccine models for several weeks. “Saskatchewan is leading the global effort to find a vaccine and we are providing our researchers with additional support to continue and to share their lifesaving work with Canadians and people around the world,� Minister Responsible for Innovation Saskatchewan Tina Beaudry-Mellor said.

VIDO-InterVac scientists were the first in

Canada to isolate the virus that causes COVID19, in collaboration with the Public Health Agency of Canada and a research facility in Toronto. They expect to know in midApril whether their vaccine works in an animal model. Clinical testing can start once VIDO-InterVac provides enough preliminary data for Health Canada to determine the candidate vaccine is safe in humans. “The Government of Canada is committed to protecting the health and safety of Canadians,� said Navdeep Bains, Federal Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry. “We are all in this together: Canada is benefiting from the impressive and innovative power of our researchers at Saskatoon’s VIDO-InterVac in our national approach to fight COVID-19. Together, we are rapidly scaling-up our capacity in research and in manufacturing to combat this pandemic.�

Since the outbreak of

the coronavirus in January, the Government of Saskatchewan has provided researchers in Saskatoon with a total of $4.2 million. VIDOInterVac also received $1 million through the federal rapid research funding initiative for COVID19 research projects, in addition to the $23 million in federal funding announced on March 23 for the centre’s manufacturing facility to produce COVID-19 vaccines for clinical trials, and overall operational costs. “This funding helps fast track vaccine development for emerging infections including COVID19,� VIDOInterVac Director and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Volker Gerdts said. “We very much appreciate the Government of Saskatchewan and the Federal Government’s continued support of our research and development efforts in these challenging times.�

But, on a per acre basis the use of such products on our urban lawns can be far greater, after all it takes fertilizer to keep a grass lawn lush, and no one wants a yellow dandelion growing in that sea of green grass, so pour on the herbicide.

Interestingly, clover is being suggested as an alternate to grass for lawns.

The plant simply offers advantages over grass.

As a nitrogen fixing legume, clover works symbiotically with bacteria to fix atmospheric nitrogen and make it available to both itself and neighboring plants. A 100 per cent clover lawn would reasonably need little or no fertilizer.

This year the plan was that PALS would be hosting the Sunrise Service at 7a.m at Redeemer Lutheran Church! We would have started with lighting our candles outside and parade into the sanctuary where would worship our Risen Lord in prayer, song and the word! With our candles we would bring the light of Christ

back into the church and relight the Christ candle and remember the bright light of Christ is in all of us!

We would look at John chapter 20 verses 1-18.

We would see the writer of John experience Easter and what things we can learn from his writings.

We would remember the meaning of Easter together and we would celebrate with news words and imagery that has gone away during the season of Lent. We would celebrate the remembrance of the rebirth of ourselves.

Yet, as well know that this year we are unable to be in our church buildings.

We are unable to light the Christ candle in our church. With this Covid19 we have had to change the way we do church.

We have remained physical distanced but spiritual we are connected by our baptism and in our prayers and devotions.

Easter Reflection

been praying together at noon at seven in the evening the Lord’s prayer, we have been reading and watching sermons via our e-mail and Internet.

Brothers and Sisters, in this time of uncertainty

and isolation, this a difficult time. I have been inspired by walking past houses who in the windows have words of support for our health care workers. I have been inspired when I see the

signs in windows that say “this too shall pass.”

We have hope because, we remember the difficult times that God had brought us through in the past. Hope because we have known we have a risen Lord, who is with us always, in every way, and every Day. My prayer for you is Hope, and knowledge that you are surround by the Holy Spirit and we can lean into that as we journey together by walking three feet apart in the bright light of Easter.

As we go into Easter, some of us may feel some grief over the fact that we do not regular services.

But I wonder if maybe we can have service at home together. Gather to remember that Christ is risen! He is risen indeed!

Alleluia!

Edward Gibney In Holy Week we experience the last few days of Jesus’ life on the earth, beginning with his triumphant entrance into Jerusalem, then the Last Supper when he instituted the Holy Eucharist and expressed to his disciples the need to serve others, and finally his passion, death and resurrection for our sake.

Jesus was fully aware of what awaited him at the end of that week, at the end of his journey to Jerusalem, but that did not stop him from completing the duty his Father had sent him to do, which was to save humanity: to do what was best for his “neighbour” no matter what the cost. It was for this reason that Jesus entered Jerusalem despite knowing that there were people there who were searching for him with the desire of killing him.

Often, in following the example of Jesus, we find that there are times when it is necessary for us to go out of our comfort zone and do things for the common good. This may not be something which places one’s life in danger, even though it can be, but most of the time it is a case of caring for the needs of others more then caring for personal comfort and self-interest.

This attitude of care for others, before our own desires, is the principal we are living in our world as a response to Covid-19. As much as it is an inconvenience upon our usual manner of life, we find ourselves living in a state of isolation or semi isolation, for the good of others. Of course, we would like to be visiting our friends or going to work or Daily Mass, but for the good of our neighbour and the world, we accept this inconvenience.

In his life, Jesus gave us the greatest commandment saying, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind, and you shall love your neighbour as yourself.” When Jesus died on the cross, he exemplified that great commandment by obeying the will of his Father in heaven, for the good of all of humanity.

The isolation we are accepting in regard to Covid-19 is offering us the opportunity to follow the example of Jesus and to live that lesson; the opportunity to put aside our personal desires and wishes, for the good of our neighbours and of the entire world.

May God grant you a Blessed Easter.

Easter, One Part of the Plan of Salvation

by Marjorie Fortney, Biggar Seventh-day Adventist Church The death and resurrection of Jesus is not just an isolated incident in world history.

It is instead part of the complete timeline of the plan of salvation that will culminate with the second coming of Jesus. Revelation 1:7 “Behold He cometh with clouds and every eye shall see Him…” The death and resurrection of Jesus was a pivotal point of that timeline in changing the direction of the great controversy between Jesus and Satan. Christ was victorious in the war between good and evil. There are a few skirmishes to clean up, but soon our Commander in Chief will return to rescue His people. Read Daniel chapter two.

Easter is a time of celebrating the victory Christ gained over sin, and death and the grave. But unless we as individuals accept that victory for ourselves, it is just a beautiful story.

The idea is to accept this sacrifice for our sins and to rejoice in the salvation it brings. To help us through this process, Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to teach us how to live. There is a restoration that needs to take place in our lives. He wants to prepare us to live in a new world where there will be no sin. People who become inhabitants of the new world will not steal, lie, murder, covet, take God’s name in vain etc. Jesus died to save us from our sins, not in our sins. He wants us, and He will empower us, to live a victorious life in Him. Secondly, we are to share this good news with others.

Easter points us to the Creator of heaven and earth. It was our Creator that died on the cross of Calvary. In Revelation 14:6 & 7 we read the following message: ‘And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation and tongue and people, saying with a loud voice, Fear God and give glory to Him; for the hour of His judgment is come: and worship Him that made heaven and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.”

Easter reminds us of how much God loves us. He died for all the human race. He is not willing that any should be lost, but the choice is ours. Dear Friend, God loves you.

I pray that you will choose to love Him.

by: Pastor Doug Motz Many children and adults look forward to the Chocolate Easter Bunny; the Easter Chocolate eggs; the colouring of Hard Boiled Eggs – and whatever else goes along with this side of Easter.

To others Easter is only known as some pagan holiday celebration which stems back to the 1500’s.

But the question is, is this really: “what is at the heart of Easter?”

This Springtime event dates back some 3,000 years ago. God instructed Moses and Aaron in the month of Nisan – our March/ April - who were to lead the children of Israel out of their 400 years of slavery in Egypt – following the 10th Plague God was about to send upon Egypt. This Plague was called the Angel

of Death. Israel however were to slaughter a Passover, blemish-less, spotless, perfect Lamb – take its blood and sprinkle it on their doorposts as their protection from this Angle of Death that would kill all the first born men, women, children, & livestock in Egypt. God had commanded that they eat their lambs and be prepared to run for their lives! This all pointed to the Ultimate Lamb of God who’d be crucified on a Cross – 1500 years later.

As was prophesied, Jesus came as the Incarnate Son of God and Son of Man. Jesus Himself, being born into the Jewish culture practiced this annual Passover meal.

Then, just hours before His trial and death on the cross – He celebrated this meal for the last time with His 12 disciples. At this last meal, Jesus spoke by using both the symbols of the unleavened bread and the fruit of the vine – to show His disciples of how His body would be badly bruised (broken), during His trial and on the cross for the sins of many. It was here that

What is at the heart of Easter?

Jesus made a New Covenant in His blood – He was about to shed blood on the cross as ultimate atonement for the sins of all who would receive Jesus as their Lord and Savior; by God’s Grace; through Faith; and be Born Again by the Spirit of God. Here are the Bible references that speak of these truths: Matthew 26:14 – 29; Mark 14:10 – 31; Luke 22:1 – 20; John 1:12 & 13; 3:1 – 21; Ephesians 2:1 – 10.

Only hours later, Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus into the hands of the Jewish Sanhedrin. There He was tried, and mistreated, then appeared before Pontius Pilot the Roman Governor for the Judaean region. Pilot attempted to no avail to convince the crowd that this sinless Man – wasn’t worthy of death. But the crowds kept crying out; “crucify

Have you cried when the hero dies? When the movie ends and everyone finds their happy ever after?

I’m a crier.

I cry when the main character gets hurt or loses his love; when the dog gets lost; and even at sappy telephone commercials playing Elvis’ “Are You Lonesome Tonight?”. I cry over sad songs and favourite hymns.

I am a crier.

Good Friday elicits these feelings of sadness and loss from me every season. It has always been the hardest Christian celebration, emotionally, for me.

A few years back (more than I care to remember) our church minister asked my husband to build and install a rough cross in the doorway of the sanctuary. He then asked me to participate in the Good Friday service. My part would require me hammering a nail into the cross signifying the crucifixion of Christ.

I was physically ill thinking of the cruelty of that act against Jesus. I cried for days and eventually told the minister I could not partake. The service was incredible but the ringing of the hammer on the nails still sounds in my ears.

Another church, another minister, another Good Friday. We did a dramatic reading, portraying several characters who were present during the trial and crucifixion of Jesus. I read the part of Mary, Jesus’ mother.

Tears streamed down my face as I read the heart wrenching plea from Mary.

As I finished, I looked up at the congregation and there wasn’t a dry eye in the place.

Easter follows the sad events of Good Friday. And yes, there’s the opportunity for tears. This time they are tears of joy and gratitude. As modern Christians we know the “Rest of the Story”. We know of the great celebration of joy and love.

Jesus beat death and conquered the grave; he presented himself to his friends and followers; then he ascended to heaven to make a place for us all.

Easter is the promise of life everlasting - if only we believe.

Live through the grief and loss of Good Friday, knowing that Jesus lives again.

HE has risen indeed! Hallelujah!

Him”; “crucify Him”! I’m wondering, if we would’ve been in that crowd that day – if we would’ve joined in with everyone else – or stood on Pilot’s side? Pilot had Jesus flogged – whipped by Roman soldiers who used 9 strand leather whips with sharp sheep bone and metal woven into each strand! Jesus was then take to a place called the Praetorium – the soldiers mockingly placed a purple robe on Him and a crown of thorns 1 ? to 2 inches long. This crown was driven into His skull many times. See these passages of Scripture: Matthew 27; Mark 15:15 – 20; John 18 & 19. Then when Pilot realize he was losing ground with the Jews and the crowds – He handed Him over to them to be crucified.

Jesus was made to carry His own cross, but

couldn’t and the Roman Soldiers forced a man by the name of Simon of Cyrenian – Mark 15:21 – to carry the cross for Him. They climbed Mt. Calvary and Jesus along with 2 other criminals were crucified with Him. There Jesus had His hands & feet nailed to the cross – bleeding dying between heaven and earth – from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. The whole account can be read from Matthew 27; Mark 15; Luke 23; John 19. Finally around 3:00 PM the sky grew Black as night and Jesus cried; “It is Finished” and He died – the work of sins atonement had been accomplished for all who would come to Him on God’s merit – not man’s good deeds.

Jesus body was buried in a borrowed tomb, and a large stone was rolled over it’s entrance and sealed with a Roman seal.

But on the 3rd Day – no Roman seal; no stone; nothing could hold Jesus in the tomb – CHRIST AROSE - BODILY FROM THE TOMB! HE ALONE WON THE VICTORY OVER SIN AND DEATH! He was seen by the 11

disciples, and by as many as 500 followers for 40 days, and then ascended back to heaven to be seated at the right hand of God. He is now interceding for all those who are Born Again of the His Spirit of God, and are truly choosing to live as Christ lived! However, He did promise His disciples before He returned to Heaven that He’d be coming back again – and that time is coming quickly! See these Scriptures: Matthew 28; Mark 16; Luke 24; John 20 & 21; Acts 1; 1 Corinthians 15; Ephesians 1 & 2.

This is what the true meaning of Easter is all about! Have you repented of your sins, and asked Jesus into your heart? He might be knocking at your hearts door don’t resist Him, but let Him in today!

Perdue United Church Easter Reflection

by Ken Davidson, Perdue United Church From the birth of the light, at Christmas: Through the 33 years he spent on earth; walking on water, to defeating temptation in the desert; we come together at Easter to remember, that he took our sins with Himself onto that cross, and because the last sacrifice and justification for our forgiveness.

Because we acknowledge and love Jesus, we too, like the thief who hung beside Jesus, shall find ourselves beside Jesus Christ, when we are called home to Glory . . . Thank you Jesus.

Canadian agriculture crucial during COVID-19 crisis The Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan (APAS) is calling attention to the role that Canadian agriculture can and must play during the economic disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Saskatchewan farmers are not shutting down,â&#x20AC;? said APAS President and farmer Todd Lewis. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Farm families are hard at work every day to ensure a stable supply of quality food for Canadian and international customers.

People around the world will continue to rely on our products, and we will continue to operate while other sectors slow down.

However, as an industry that supports one in every eight Canadian jobs, farmers need assistance from governments and industry partners to make sure we can continue to do our jobs.â&#x20AC;?

Lewis pointed out that producers are facing considerable uncertainty

about cash flow heading into spring seeding. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our members are about to invest billions of dollars into this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s crop, and recent weather, trade, and transportation disruptions have stretched our financial capacity to the limit. We need the government and financial industry to assist us to make that investment possible,â&#x20AC;? Lewis explained.

He welcomed the federal governmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s announcement of relaxation of regulations on financial institutions to increase liquidity and called for banks and credit unions to work with producers on cash flow issues.

Lewis also highlighted that many employment opportunities will be available in agriculture this year. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Many producers have relied on international seasonal labour to do essential work on Canadian farms, but it appears

that workers may not be available this season due to border closures. People that have lost their jobs during the COVID-19 crisis need to be connected to agricultural work that urgently needs to be done. APAS and other agricultural groups need to engage with everyone that can help connect potential workers with employment opportunities.â&#x20AC;?

Lewis concluded that APAS is also focused on supply chain issues in transportation and food processing. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Whether it is transport of products to export markets, or availability of farm inputs or processing capacity, Canadian farmers depend on a fully functional transportation and supply chain. For the sake of maintaining a stable food supply globally, we all have to ensure there are no further disruptions to Canadian agriculture.â&#x20AC;?

Betty Mundt (nee Henne) lived a full and active life. She

enjoyed daily coffee with the "girls", lunches out and checking out garage sales.

She was happy to be able to volunteer for the New Horizons, driving the Courtesy Car and taking part in many of their activities.

She adored her five grandchildren Jeslyn, Eric, Evan, Cruz and Brooklyn. Grandma Betty always made sure to have ice cream and strawberries for them.

Betty loved being part of the farm, helping keep Greg, Jason and whomever was working with them well fed. All will miss Betty's delicious meal deliveries, complete with homemade treats, at harvest. Betty made the best apple pie. She looked forward to Jana's long weekend visits with granddog Kessa.

Betty is survived by Jana, Greg (Stacey), Cruz and Brooklyn and Jason (Jennifer), Jeslyn, Eric and Evan Mundt. She also leaves behind sister Grace Young and brother Donald Henne, as well as numerous family.

She was predeceased by her husband Ervin and daughter Glenna.

Improved Jays eager for start to season If or when the baseball season finally starts, what would make Blue Jays’ fans happy in 2020?

A 14-win improvement to 81-81? A team that contends for the American League East title against foes such as the powerhouse Yankees? Steady improvement while their young players develop?

Would a 75-82 campaign do it?

Unrealistic Jays’ fans are wishing for 162-0, of course, and while that’s not possible (100-0 may be more like it), there are strong indications the Jays are in for a vastly improved 2020 over 2019’s disappointing 67-win (.414) season.

To begin with, Toronto’s starting rotation is packed with talent, and promise. Last year, it was held together by string, some Crazy Glue and crossed fingers, but this year it starts with Cy Young Award candidate Hyun-Jin Ryu, the South Korean lefty who signed with the Jays as a free agent after a terrific 14-5, 2.32 ERA season with the Dodgers. Ryu struck out 162 and walked only 24 and is the undisputed ace of a rotation that will also count on right-hander Matt Shoemaker, who was 3-0 last year before suffering a season-ending torn ALC in April, but

was solid in spring training this year.

Another newby in the rotation is Tanner Roark, 10-10 last year with Cincinnati and Oakland, and a free-agent arrival in Toronto. A potential star in the rotation could be 32-year-old righty Shun Yamaguchi, who comes to North America after leading the Japanese Central League in strikeouts last year (188) and wins (15).

And if you’re a fan who wants to see some depth in the rotation, there’s trade acquisition Chase Anderson, who had 38 wins in the last four years with Milwaukee. Trent Thornton, who won six games with the Jays last season, and Anthony Kay, a first-round pick in 2016 with the Mets, who was acquired in the Marcus Stroman deal last season, could both contribute.
