Visitor restrictions at all Saskatchewan Health Authority facilities The Saskatchewan Health Authority is asking for the public’s support and cooperation to contain the spread of the COVID19 illness by following visiting restrictions now in place at all SHA facilities throughout Saskatchewan.

Visitors are not permitted in any Saskatchewan Health Authority operated hospitals, clinics, community and continuing care facilities, except for compassionate reasons.

Compassionate reasons may include immediate family during end-of-life care, family of patients prior to a major surgery or visitors aiding in clinical care (at the discretion of the patient’s care provider).

These enhanced restrictions came into effect Monday, March 16, 2020 and are in place until further notice.

“We acknowledge the importance of family support to both those who are healing within our

hospitals and residents in long-term care homes,” SHA officials say. “However, we are asking families and visitors for their cooperation in following these restrictions. We encourage families to consider virtual visiting through electronic applications such as Facetime, Skype and WhatsApp.”

Under no circumstances should you visit if you have a respiratory, gastric or flu-like symptoms (common cold/ diarrhea/ vomiting), or if you have travelled outside of Saskatchewan in the past 14 days.

All community, foundation and other public and spiritual gatherings

within any SHA-operated facility remain on hold effective immediately until further notice. Services provided by community volunteers who are 65 years of age or older, in non-essential service areas are also suspended.

Sask Health labs reduce tests to focus on COVID-19

Saskatchewan Health Authority laboratories will be reducing their testing menu to focus on the COVID-19 pandemic until further notice.

In order to prioritize available staff and resources to provide timely COVID-19 testing for the patients of Saskatchewan, the Saskatchewan Health Authority, Laboratory Medicine Provincial Program will begin to limit routine testing at all outpatient laboratories in the province effective 7 a.m. on Monday, March 23.

Testing related to prenatal, cancer and transplant patients will continue.

A full list of the tests that will continue to be conducted is available below.

Tests that are marked as “Stat” or “Urgent” will also continue to be collected at outpatient laboratories.

All standing orders will be processed in accordance with the limited test menu.

Any patients with questions about whether their routine test should be collected in a more timely manner, please consult directly with your physician or health care provider.

We appreciate the public’s continued understanding as we all work together to address the COVID-19 pandemic. The latest information about COVID-19 continues to be available on the Government of Saskatchewan’s Web site at saskatchewan. ca/COVID-19.

The regular meeting of Biggar Town Council was held March 3, at 7:15 p.m. in the Council Chambers.

Attending the meeting were Mayor Ray Sadler, Aldermen Penny McCallum, Kirk Sherbino, Edward Young, and Ivan Young.

Council resolved that the agenda for the March 3 Regular Meeting of Council, be approved as presented.

Council resolved that the minutes of the February 18 Regular Meeting of Council, be accepted as presented.

Council resolved that the minutes of the February 25 Committee Meeting of the Whole, be accepted as presented.

Council resolved that the Fire Chief’s Report fo the month of February, be accepted as present-

ed by Fire Chief, Gerry Besse.

Council resolved that the Recreation Director’s Report for the month of February, be accepted as presented by the Recreation Director, Erin Poitras.

Council resolved that the request from Erin Poitras for Josip Knezevic, Wayne Schmidke and Jason Raschke to attend the Small Engine Repair course in Humboldt on April 27 for a cost of $262.50 per participant, be approved.

Council resolved that the estimate from Dorosh Contracting Ltd. in the amount of $6,516.43 to purchase and install new cabinets and counter tops in the bar at the Biggar Community Hall, be accepted.

Biggar RCMP report

by Cpl. Dereck Crozier, Biggar Detachment, NCO IC This past week had the Biggar RCMP detachment respond to 25 calls for service.

In the mix this week, were three collisions, five tickets issued, one Break and Enter, one complaint of fraud over the telephone, and five suspicious people/vehicle sightings.

Some good news is that the suspicious light coloured suburban SUV

that has been frequenting our area, has been located and impounded in Saskatoon with stolen property and suspects being identified.

The most unique file members had to deal with this week was finding a driver who thought they could drive their tractor in town while impaired.

Luckily there were no injuries to the public.

Tractor was impounded and criminal code charges have been laid.

This is a good reminder,

that if you are operating a conveyance on the road and are operating under the influence of alcohol or drug, it can result in criminal impaired operation charges. This can include your lawn tractor, golf cart and ATV et cetera.

Amongst this COVID19 lock down, we continue to be at your service where needed. So far we are have managed to stay at full strength and remain on duty. I would like to remind the gener-

al public that the Health Minister has issued and order and self isolation is mandatory along with the 14 days quarantine if you have returned from travel. We have received complaints of individuals who have travelled and are not abiding by 14 days of isolation. In respect for others and the very real situation we have at had, we ask that you follow the order and direction provided by the Health Minister.

Sometimes you have to just tune out Like most of you, I’m a wee bit over-saturated with COVID-19.

Overwhelmed, is more like it.

While it is important to stay informed, it is equally important to realize that with the news cycle the way it is, 24 hours of doom and gloom does you no good.

With things being cancelled, postponed, or put on hiatus indefinitely, there is little out their for news organizations to report on, thus: COVID this, COVID that, COVID as far as the eye can see and the ears can hear.

You just want to crawl in a hole, hide from the world, wait for the nightmare to end.

A great thing to do not tune out from the news, just limit your intake. No matter what people say, things aren’t changing minute by minute. Do yourself a favour: step outside, take a walk - distance yourself, yes, but get out there. Call someone and share a joke, a funny story. Indulge yourself in a favourite meal. Just get away from it all - be responsible - but get . . . away!

It is also important to stay in touch with others - for your sake and for theirs. Some in our community are isolated - give them a call. Let them know you are thinking about them. Again, share a laugh or some tidbit other than a virus news item.

Things may well have changed in the world as we know it. But it doesn’t mean you stop living. Take the precautions. Wash your hands, stay informed.

But, please . . . take a breath, a break. Don’t forget to be silly and find some humour in all the madness.

Watch those around you during these stressful times. And watch yourself.

You are stronger than you think. Especially when you let someone lean on you . . . and when you allow yourself to lean on them.

You choose whether to be happy or miserable

by Faith Wood My daughter has a Facebook friend whose life seems perfect.

She lives in a gorgeous house, has a really rewarding career, and she and her family go on all kinds of exciting adventures. No matter where they are or what activity they’re involved in, the whole family appears carefree and joyful!

This friend is constantly posting about how blessed and grateful she is for the life she has. I get the feeling she’s not just saying those things for the sake of Facebook but that she truly means it.

As happy as my daughter is for them, I know there are times when she feels a bit sad about all this. She would like to have a relationship like her friend’s,

a rewarding career and a chance to have similar adventures. Instead, she feels she’s living a more stressful existence. Living paycheque to paycheque in a predictable job. Her boyfriend feels stress intensely and it shows in significant mood swings.

They fret over paying bills and finding a place to rent in a market that has few options, rather than enjoying the area they live in.

Its natural to scroll through the Facebook news feeds and roll your eyes occasionally. To envy someone else’s life from time to time. It’s just a few moments of introspective angst so how could it hurt?

Researchers and neuroscientists warn that these small thoughts may

significantly undermine your talents, mood and overall performance.

When we envy our friends’ lives, complain about politics, the economy or our relationships, when we imagine that someone else has taken all the luck and opportunity the universe has, it slowly eats away at our mental strength and resourcefulness.

When we constantly expose ourselves to naysayers and fear inducers, we’re unconsciously limiting our ability to thrive.

We become suspicious and judgmental. And we become those people who others avoid, so our dire moods cause us to feel even more alone in the world.

If you had the choice to hang out with two peo-

ple – one bubbly, positive and playful, and one negative and bitter – who would you choose?

None of us want to be those people, but life can be pretty hard on us.

When we’re exposed to constant negativity, we soak it up before we even realize it’s happening.

To live an extraordinary life, we must deliberately shift our focus. We need to make a real effort to find opportunities for gratitude. We need to make time to do things that bring us joy. Cooking, cycling, walking the dog – anything that creates an energy of more ease and flow.

There are going to be stressful moments and events in our lives, but we don’t need to wallow in those moments. When

I was a single mom, I had my fair share of wondering how I was going to pay the bills. But I look back and laugh at how resourceful I was when there was nothing in the house to eat.

We need to rise above circumstances and focus on being more resilient.

It will help if we make sure we’re ruthless about who we spend time with.

We’re influenced more heavily than we realize by the five people we spend the most time with. They influence our perspective and our behaviours.

Don’t ever give people an opportunity to badmouth your decisions.

You may think you’re not affected by their words, but subconsciously the opposite may be happening.

No matter what’s going right or wrong, events and situations constantly change. We all have years to enjoy this journey of life, to live our adventure and fill our time with moments of awe and wonder. We can spend those years making excuses, procrastinating or delaying happiness – or refocus on what’s going right, take the gamble and learn to play with it all.

It really is a matter of choice.

A millwright and Y.T. were repairing a big brine pump back in the mill at Cominco Potash one time, when Y.T. noticed Bob Mason that the M.W. needed a 7/8 wrench, and handed it to him.

He scornfully waved the wrench aside and told me that he needed an odd-sized 13/16 wrench from the tool crib. So, away Y.T. went, and 15 minutes later came back with the wrench the M.W. wanted.

Sorry! 13/16 was a bit too small for the nut he had to loosen and he used the 7/8 that I (a lowly helper) had offered him in the first place! But guess who got Kimin Inglis a raise wages, plus a promotion for fixing that

Unlike some of our Daniels sons,Calvin Y.T. isn’t much of a mechanic, but one time years ago, my old truck stuck in gear on a cold February night, and as there were no other people around with transmission “know how�, he had to remove the gearshift cover and sort out the gear placements all by himself. So, when one of the machines on construction also stuck in gear, Y.T. knew exactly what to do.

The young operator listened intently as I told him what had to be done, and when the big boss came along, explained to him the way it should be Calvin Daniels fixed, the result was that the Y.O (Young Operator) was given the job of company mechanic, while old Y.T. went back to fixing fence!

I suppose this kind of attitude can be found in psychology text books all over under “Inferiority Complexes� but, as probably mentioned many times before being a kind of bourgeois type, Y.T. can’t afford to be “analyzed� like some folks do!

Mebbe we are all this way a bit, and Mr. Freud and associates have just pointed out this “comKim Inglis

plex� thing for fun! I dunno!

A lot of we peasants don’t care that much anyway!

After all, it is mebbe the other persons craving for “one uppance� that needs analyzing!

Y.T. went to a “down to earth and dirty� political meeting one time, and found that he practically had to shout if he wanted his opinions to be heard . . . or shut up! So, opinion-wise, he is now pretty close mouthed!

Many times in the past things like this have happened over and over, possibly to all of us.

Sometimes we do learn something from these people who “show us how it is done!�, and sometimes we just listen to their advice, forget about it and go our own way. Like Y.T. sez, it doesn’t seem to matter too much!

Mebbe a round-about way of half explaining this kind of stuff is that we still have a lot of politicians telling us what to do - they seem to know everything! Although some of them don’t belong to “my� (ahem!) particular party, they are, of course, very suspect ...

Times have changed (and the history book sez they always do!) so I suppose that mebbe we older types should change with them.

Mebbe that is what is Y.T.’s so called “problem�, eh? But darn it all, one of our most respected ideals as children was “Honesty is the best policy!�

And often, to me, it doesn’t seem that way anymore! Give the next fellow a chance and he’ll kick you in the stomach when your back’s turned!

Some years ago, when Y.T. retired, he took up the game of golf and expects all golfers to be honest, upright and true.

Yet one day, in nice September weather, while he was standing on a T-box, shifting his feet and wiggling his hips in preparation of taking another cross-handed swipe at his teed up ball, a voice rang out: “Hey Sir� (well he did call me “sir�), “you are not holding your club right.�

Guess whose expensive, titanium golf ball ended up in the nearest water hazard, eh?

Monarch Multiple 4H Club News We held our registration meeting back in October.

This year we have several new members in our club, so our club is definitely growing!

We have 19 members this year, they are: Chloe and Davin Dehr, James and Mike Domes, Kolby Haynes, Katie Kolenosky, Leah Libke, Dallas and Jace McAvoy, Eric, Evan and Jeslyn Mundt, Katie

Sagon, Averi and Cole Weekes, Chayce and Makayla Westgard, Charlee and Reid Wolfe.

Our projects this year are Light Horse and Beef. Our very capable leaders this year are Lexie Dehr, Lisa Haynes, Mark Haynes, Stacey Kolenosky, Dean McAvoy, Lindsay Sagon, Clinton Weekes, Kim Westgard, and BJ Wolfe.

Our year is going to be very busy with all these members this year!

Springtime is usually our busiest time but the kids will be busy throughout the winter with project meetings.

A few of our members were busy during the summer with various 4H shows. Kolby Haynes participated at the Prairieland Junior Ag Showcase. This is the regional 4H show/sale for all the different livestock projects in the 4H program.

She showed her steer and then had him in the sale as well. Congrats to Kolby on doing a fine job!

Reid Wolfe also participated at the Prairieland Junior Ag Showcase with his horse Wranglers Par D Girl. This was Reids last year in Cloverbud so next year its on to the big leagues in the Junior division. He also com-

peted at the Prince Albert Exhibition 4H Show and the North Battleford Fair 4H Light Horse shows.

Congratulations to both of these members for representing the Monarch Multiple 4H Club and making us proud!

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Elmer Ernst Kurbis June 13, 1940 – March 5, 2020

TOWN OF BIGGAR

Elmer was a man who loved his family and in spite of his challenges had a wonderful sense of humor. He loved books and especially those of birds. He also loved music and would take every opportunity he could to play his drum sticks in perfect rhythm. His early years were on the family farm north of Biggar and later he moved to town with Mom and Dad. Before moving into the Biggar long term care centre, he lived with his brother Gordon on his farm. A highlight for Elmer was when his sister Margaret took him on a holiday trip to Whitehorse where she lived. Elmer had learned of God’s love for him as a boy growing up and as he neared the end of his life, he was able to express very clearly that he was trusting in Jesus. A celebration of Elmer’s life was held March 11, 2020 in the Redeemer Lutheran Church with Pastor Sarah Mowat officiating and Pastor Doug Motz taking part as well. Interment was at Emmanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery north of Biggar.

Left to cherish Elmer’s memory are his sisters Lily Murch, Ruth Pudrycki, Doreen Long, Jan Kurbis (Jack), Margaret Scheaffer; brother Ed (Carol) Kurbis; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. Elmer was predeceased by his parents Adolph & Emily Kurbis; brother-in-laws Alfred Murch, Alfred Pudrycki, Richard Long, Don Scheaffer; nephew Jason Long. *********************************************************************** It is with heavy hearts that the family of William (Bill) Oesch announce his peaceful passing at the Rosetown & District Health Centre on March 9, 2020, at he age of 93, surrounded by family and his loving wife by his side. Bill was a wonderful, hard-working, gentle man with a grumpy hard exterior to protect his heart of gold. A mechanic by profession, he loved working with his hands-- repairing, building and gardening. Whenever he fixed a troublesome piece of equipment, a satisfied expression would light up his face. He spent almost 28 years with his wife, Rose, whom he married in April, 1992.
