It was a big weekend for the Biggar Senior Blazers who came out on top after hosting Conference 4 playoffs. The Green and Gold were strong on the two days, pulling double-duty by hosting the playoffs. With the STF job action, this may be it for the season. Let’s hope the Blazers get a chance to make a run!

Council Minute highlights The regular meeting of Biggar Town Council was held February 18, at 7:15 p.m. in the Council Chambers. Attending the meeting were Mayor Ray Sadler, Aldermen Alan Boyle, Kevin McNicholls, Kirk Sherbino, Edward Young, and Ivan Young.

Council resolved that the agenda for the February 18 Regular Meeting of Council, be approved as presented.

Council resolved that the minutes of the February 11 Regular Meeting of Council, be approved as presented.

Council resolved that Bylaw No. 20-825, being a bylaw to Appoint Bylaw Enforcement Officers, be read three times and adopted.

Council resolved that Bylaw No. 20-826, being a bylaw to Regulate the Proceedings of Municipal Council and Council’s Committees, be read three times and adopted.

Council resolved that the February 10 Biggar

Rural Fire District Association Meeting minutes, be accepted as presented.

Council resolved that the RCMP report for the month of February 2020, be accepted as presented

Biggar Senior Boys Basketball win Conference Playoff This past weekend March 6-7, the Biggar Senior Boys Basketball Team hosted the Conference 4 playoffs.

Teams from Biggar, Asquith, Saskatoon Christian, Kerrobert, Waldheim, Hafford, Hepburn and Luseland attended.

On Friday night the boys played Hepburn and won 71-30. Then on Saturday in the semi-finals they played Saskatoon Christian. This was a close game all the way with the Blazers prevailing 61-47.

This put the Blazers in

the final against a very tall and talented Waldheim squad. The Blazers came out fast and firing on all cylinders, built up an early lead and ended up winning 86-63.

Congratulations to the Biggar Blazers 2020 Conference champions.

The Kids are back in the Kitchen . . . The Biggar and District Family Centre’s popular Kids in the Kitchen program is once again putting kids in the culinary drivers seat, having them whip up something tasty and healthy. Biggar RCMP report

by Cpl. Dereck Crozier, Biggar Detachment, NCO IC This week the Biggar RCMP had 57 calls for service.

Reported in the mix were three collisions with animals, four general traffic complaints, 28 tickets issued, one suspicious person, two Mischief and three fraud complaints.

When it comes to fraud, be very suspicious about anyone using high pressure tactics and asking for your credit card or having you purchase iTunes cards or gift certificates to pay for services

or goods. Report all activity of e-mails and phone numbers to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

This week the area also experience four Break and Enters, however the good news is that two have been solved and charges laid on a 37-yearold male from Rosetown and a 21-year-old transient female from Saskatoon.

We would also like to give a special thanks to our rural crime watch group that assisted police in locating the stolen black truck used in a number of crimes that

are suspects manage to hide in a remote location.

However, not well enough from this deputy crew.

Excellent work! This was a much needed piece of evidence to help tie a few files together.

Finally, it appears the light coloured Chev Suburban was back in our area this past week again and causing trouble for our business owners from about 10 p.m. and on. Please keep watch for any activity that may be noticed during any closed business hours.

The RM of Biggar, RM of Glenside, RM of Rosemount, RM of Grandview and the Town of Biggar comprise the Biggar Rural District Fire Association (BRDFA) to manage and provide fire and emergency services in their respective municipalities through the volunteers that make up our Biggar Fire Department.

The Biggar Rural District Fire Association is also responsible for development and implementation of protection and emergency policies as well as a financial budget funded by the member municipalities association fees. Each of the member municipalities provide one or two representatives to the board predetermined by bylaw and the the Biggar Rural District Fire Association is administered out of the RM of Biggar office.

The Biggar Rural District Fire Association is very proud of the volunteer Biggar Fire Department for their practice and dedication. The Biggar Fire Department is outstanding in preparation, prevention and performance of fire safety led by Fire Chief Gerry Besse and Deputy Fire Chief Kelly Dorosh.

According to the UN, Canada is immoral and wicked The increasingly irrelevant United Nations, bent on kow-towing to left wing social idiocy, has once again brought out the violins and climate change secret decoder rings, and told Canadians how evil we all are.

Unelected by Canadian taxpayers, the United Nations has no business criticizing the core of our economy.

But yet they did.

The UN’s Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is urging Canada to stop work resource projects, one of which is Trans Mountain. Their argument is that work is going ahead without prior and informed consent of Indigenous groups.

Their underlying tone shouts racism.

While a majority of Indigenous nations want these projects, stopping them would now ignore their needs, and I guess the UN would have to get involved. Again.

Seems the UN’s American Overlords still want to meddle in our country - and continue to whine when someone mucks about in their affairs.

Now, there is no doubt that more consultation should have been carried out - there are legitimate concerns. But condemning Canada while other energy resource countries simply get a timid scolding?

They may actually whine about China, the UAE, Russia, but they don’t really stand on a soap box and carry on like a histrionic teenager, thumping their chest and waving Greta posters.

Wonder why?

Justin Trudeau. That’s why.

JT has stumbled his way around the leadership of this country, more concerned with impressing his international buddies instead of his bosses: the Canadian taxpayer. It has allowed the UN free rein and the encouragement to bully our economy.

And Justin sure wants that seat on the UN Security Council. Yes, that seat is for all Canadians, but with his PM gig going south, sure looks like he’s applying for a job.

We have growing division over key issues of racism, reconciliation, resource extraction, Western separation, the economy, and the environment. We view these issues from our own perspective, and we all tend to focus on conflict rather than compromise or cooperation.

We are all human and we all have the same needs. We all deserve food, water, shelter, community, equal opportunity, and to be treated fairly and with dignity.

We tend to wonder “why don’t the ‘others’ just assimilate?” What does it mean to suggest that people should ‘assimilate’ to Canadian culture?

It’s time to abandon the notion of “others.”

There are no “others”; only “us”

that embracing diversity and cooperation leads to prosperity for all. If all humans are created equally and deserve equal opportunity, how can we abide by the systemic barriers that exist in our country today?

Assimilating to Canadian “culture” is to respect and promote human rights, enshrined by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and to treat each other with respect and dignity regardless of race, sex, sexual orientation, religion, or creed.

Canada has a dark history with respect to the treatment of Indigenous people. When settlers first arrived in Canada, Indigenous people agreed to share the land and to live together for mutual benefit. From the Royal Proclamation of 1763, the Canadian confederation in 1867, and the Indian Act of 1876, colonial settlers and our government

processes pushed forward an agenda of dispossession of Indigenous territory and assimilation. Indigenous peoples were placed under the guardianship of the state.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada documents how ideas of racial difference influenced policies of assimilation and cultural genocide in Canada in their numerous reports.

At present, some politicians are calling for government to take more forceful action (i.e. police force) to end the Wet’suwet’en solidarity protests. Some of these same politicians emphasize resource development above all else. On both sides of these issues, there is much banter about the “rule of law” in the media. Should the “rule of law” mean “lethal overwatch” to use violence against the Wet’suwet’en people to remove them from their unceded terri-

tory? Would use of “lethal overwatch” have been acceptable to disperse and arrest the yellow vest protesters who occupied Parliament in Ottawa or the Legislature in Regina?

Protesters using peaceful assembly are exercising a protected right in our society. Protected under section 2(c) of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, freedom of peaceful assembly is a fundamental constitutional right and is related to freedom of expression. People talk of the importance of freedom of expression (free speech). In our society, some speakers have more wealth and social standing and their voices are amplified while others are silenced. Freedom of peaceful assembly is how marginalized groups can be heard in the face of systemic injustice. The problems that motivate protesters have often been unjust laws or unpopular

political action (women’s suffrage, peace demonstrations, civil rights).

Furthermore, in the field of contract law there is the doctrine of unconscionability. There is an obvious imbalance of power between First Nation groups and large resource extraction companies who propose resource development.

The endemic poverty on many reserves is a persuasive reason to say “yes” to any resource development. From the perspective of Indigenous people who have faced centuries of oppression from our colonial government, one can understand that the impact benefit agreements formed with major resource extraction proponents may be unjust or “one sided” to the benefit of the companies and colonial governments.

As the former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada wrote 23 years ago:

“. . . the Crown is under a moral, if not a legal, duty to enter into and conduct those negotiations [with Indigenous peoples] in good faith.

Ultimately, it is through negotiated settlements, with good faith and give and take on all sides, reinforced by the judgements of this Court, that we will achieve . . . a basic purpose of s. 35(1) [The Constitution Act, 1982] “the reconciliation of the pre-existence of aboriginal societies with the sovereignty of the Crown”.

Let us face it, we are all here to stay.

Next time you overhear someone suggesting that we take down peaceful protesters by force, please reflect upon what the “rule of law” means.

Protesters want a sustainable economy that benefits all Canadians and to end the systemic injustice inherent in our system. It is a cause worthy of peaceful assembly.

Looking back over quite a few years, one often wonders, “What if?” and probably this question has been asked forever.

Our folks (God rest them!) had great plans for our future, and for their time I imagine all their plans were good!

Along with thousands of others, Dad had homesteaded out here long, long ago, married one of the first school teachers in our hometown, and as the “Breadbasket of the World” developed and their family grew, possibly expected we young fellows to be a part of it all.

But no!

Their plans didn’t work out that well. The Great Depression came along, and all through it the only hope for any farmer out here was for the good times to come again.

And they did come again!

For a few years we grew huge crops of grain and had huge dreams about the possibilities of a great agricultural future for Saskatchewan. We even thought that maybe we could “up” our educations a bit and be involved in it.

Everything looked good, and then WWII was declared the year that

Y.T. was 20 years old.

Mebbe we should have stayed home on the farm.

All through the Depression we had waited for those good times to come again, and they had, but war had come along just in time to interfere. Soon with thousands of others, young Y.T. found himself in “His Majesties Forces”, drawing down the huge wage of $1.39 per diem, and found free food clothing and shelter!

We did pretty well in the army too!

In their I.Q. test, Y.T. was way up there and he found himself on Standing Orders as possible “Officer Material”!

“Wow!” he thought, “mebbe I can become a military bigshot, eh?”

The military checked back though, and found that Yours Truly only had a grade school education, putting an end to that

great ambition!

Oh, the military minds (I could say “brass” but someone might take offense!) tried to make Y.T. into something else, but a while later, after lowly Pte. Mason had seen a few high-ranking, well educated army types bite the dust in Europe, any hankering he had about being one of them bit the dust too!

I think that part of Y.T.’s outlook was that although s o m e of the smartest people he had ever met were in the Forces, the selective instincts of a trench mortar aren’t that high!

Meaning that when a chunk of shrapned? hits a fellow between the eyes, who cares what his I.Q. was?

aren’t the best surroundings to be making plans in, and there was a while there when Y.T.’s idea of becoming anything was sure put on hold!

After the war in Europe was over, Y.T. came home all hopped up to go and fight in the Far East. But before he knew it that war had ended . . . now what?

Plans to stay in the army sure sounded good, and mebbe Y.T. should have stayed there! After a few years of army upgrading he probably would have reached a high position and been called “Sir” by a lot of green recruits, and even become a great military leader. Who knows?

But he decided against all that stuff and the more down-to-earth attractions of home won out.

It wasn’t much of a battle for Y.T. to change his ideas of what he wanted to do. After all, he’d had enough of the military life to last him a long time.

Even after 60 some years he still can’t forget some of it!

In a scrapbook on a shelf above his desk is a clipping from the Saskatoon, StarPhoenix of many years ago . . .

“Private Mason is now helping his father on the farm, awaiting his discharge from the forces . . . then he intends to attend university.”

University! Boy oh boy, it was almost like a dream come true! Very few Masons in the past had ever gone to university!

In my enthusiasm about education, I could almost see another write up in the paper: “Professor Mason, world renowned authority on Canadian Culture, was invited to . . .”

Some dream, eh?

This was one of the most worthwhile ambitions Y.T. had ever had, and he sure thought about it for quite a while. After all, who doesn’t want to be an authority of something?

Full of himself and how important he thought he had become, he visited the U of S campus in Saskatoon, where he met a famous (if absent minded) professor whose outlook on the “proletariat” didn’t impress Y.T. at all. When he thought back about those highlyeducated types occupying those European graveyards, Y.T. decided: “Not for me” For years, before and after the war, because of numerous ambitions and interests, Y.T. had no idea that he could ever be acceptable to any young lady, and could easily have become a full-time bachelor. He had great fantastic ideas about living in a cheap garrett somewhere, scrawling line after line about how much he knew. For months he felt that bachelorhood was going to be his lot in life, but into that life came Phyllis . . . Y.T. forgot about a lot of those other ambitions and started in on the most important one of his life, a faithful partner, a nice

home, a fine family in a wonderful countryside!

Who could ask for anything more?

So, who can boast about how much control they have over the things that happen to them? Who can claim to be a “self made man”? It seems to me that every time Y.T. thought he was in charge of his life, he got thrown for a ten-yard loss!

I’m not sure how true it is, but there is an old saying: “All things come to those who wait!” That “waiting” bit is the hard part! Example: When he was just a boy he always wanted to live on a farm near a town, and for a while, he was, seventy years later, on a small rural estate just west of Perdue!

We always felt that we would like a nice loving family and now we have a close group of relatiions!

As he got older, Y.T. often thought “I wish there was a golf course nearby!”

And, for a while he had one of the finest courses in the country, one short mile away!

We are all dependent on someone else! Take the reader of this article.

When we meet on the street they are apt. to say “There goes Bob Mason, the writer! I’m going to go over and rub shoulders with him!” not realizing perhaps that this Mason guy wouldn’t be a writer if he hadn’t rubbed shoulders with them first!

Our bodies are amazing and overall so resilient.

There are so many fascinating facts about the human body, and these are some you never knew.

4 Places in Our Galaxy Where Alien Life May Exist The requirements of life are so basic at first glance; raw material, solvent (ideally, water), and energy.

But looking out into the cold expanse of space, a planet with all three seems improbable if not impossible. However, even within our own galaxy there is the possibility of biological matter on an alien planet.

Maybe not in our lifetimes, but in the distant future there are places where later generations of astronauts may find life.

Mars Scientists believe three billion year ago Mars could have been a warm and wet landscape teeming with life. Which is why the Mars Rover Curiosity zigzags the unforgiving landscape, drilling into rocks and then heating them to 1,508 degrees Fahrenheit to analyze the gases for organic compounds.

Those analyses revealed thiophenes, a biological compound found here on earth. Four carbon molecules surround a sulfur molecule in thiophene, and while they’re present in both chemical and biological processes, scientists think these may be the byproduct of bacteria on the alien planet.

Scientists are cautious making predictions, but

there’s a chance when astronauts reach Mars they may see moving microbes in their samples.

Europa There are massive oceans beneath the ice on this moon of Jupiter. And, in 2020, NASA plans on launching the Europa Clipper to perform a series of flybys of the frozen moon while in orbit around Jupiter.

Scientists believe a second-genesis may have taken place in the water, with life developing independently of the organic matter found on Earth and Mars.

The surface of Europa is smooth, without evidence of impact from meteors or space debris. That may be because warmer ice rises from below and smooths out craters.

There’s evidence to suggest the chemical compounds necessary for life were present in Europa from the start. Combine water and chemistry with energy in the form of constant radiation bombardment from Jupiter, and you have all the ingredients necessary in the recipe for life.

Enceladus Another moon, but this time belonging to Saturn.

Just last year, a plum of water shot from Enceladus’ underground ocean into the atmosphere. It

carried with it organic compounds necessary for building amino acids; the building blocks of life.

A similar process takes place here on Earth, where hydrothermal vents deep in the ocean super-heating hydrogenrich water which fuels chemical reactions to form amino acids, all without sunlight.

This proves that even on the dark moon of Enceladus, life may still form.

Titan This is Saturn’s largest moon, bigger than even the planet Mercury. It bears a few remarkable similarities to Earth.

The first is that it has a thick atmosphere, also made up primarily of nitrogen, but with methane instead of oxygen.

Titan orbits around the Sun with Saturn, taking 27 Earth years to make the journey. Titan also has seasons like Earth, also remarkable, a system of liquid evaporation to clouds and raining down moisture on the surface.

Instead of water, its methane and ethane in liquid form. Beneath the crust of super-cold ice, scientists believe there’s a liquid ocean of salt water, which erupts in volcanic activity.

Titan is the only other planetary body besides Earth to have liquid activity on its surface.

Keaton Donahue on behalf of the Glassic Committee hands over a cheque in the amount of $25,000 to the Town of Biggar’s Chief Administrative Officer Barb Barteski to help with costs for the renovations of the Mark Edwards Hall in Jubilee Stadium. Renovations included new flooring, new lights, new ceiling tiles, new bar area, and fresh paint. This year marks the 29th annual Glassic hockey tournament which will be March 20 and 21.

Karate Club medals

The students of the Biggar Karate club attended a kata tour Saturday, February 8 in Wilkie.

There were competitors from many areas of the province as well as some from Alberta. Biggar took home one silver medal and three bronze in kata

and team kata. Other events included weapons kata, Batto (sword) and cutting. It was an eventful day. Bev Barth, Tour Director and Instructor of the Biggar Karate Club, has just returned from an international tour in Los Angeles (Feb 20-23). Bev

competed in Batto kata, kata and kumite. She received a bronze medal in kumite, but her greatest experience was refereeing in an international tour. What an experience!!

Man who filmed himself licking ice cream tub gets jail time

A 24-year-old man was sentenced in late February to 30 days in jail for posting on social media a video last August of himself removing an ice cream container from a Texas market freezer, licking the contents and returning the container to the freezer.

D’Adrien Anderson, 24, also was sentenced to an additional six-month jail

term probated for two years and ordered to pay a $1,000 fine and $1,565 in restitution to Blue Bell Creameries, which had to replace all of its products in the freezer.

Anderson began serving his jail term immediately after sentencing.

The incident happened August 26 at a Walmart in Port Arthur. Store surveillance cameras showed

that he finally took the Blue Bell ice cream from the freezer and bought it, which wasn’t captured in the social media video, authorities said.

Anderson could have been sentenced to up to a year in jail and fined $4,000 for misdemeanor criminal mischief.

Port Arthur is about 85 miles (137 kilometres) east of Houston.

OBITUARIES It is with great sadness and heavy hearts to announce the passing of our mom, Eileen Pravda( known as Granny), at the age of 97 and 1/2 years old. Mom was predeceased by her husband Jim, daughter Judy, and 12 siblings. Mom was born in Rosetown in 1922 to John and Margaret Winter. At a young age, mom graduated from a business course and worked for a gov’t agency called Canada Colonization Assocation until she married Jim Pravda in 1944.

They began their married life in the Howard Powel district where they farmed and raised four children. Mom loved the farm and worked with dad until they retired in Biggar. In her early 20s, mom started the first figure skating club in Rosetown and Howard Powell and was a figure skating teacher for many years. Mom was very proud of her figure skating career. Mom was quite sure she could still figure skate in her late 90s and wanted to have one final skate with her great grandchildren.

Mom’s greatest joy was her family, Margie(Gerald) Quilichini, Barbie (Dave)Dionne, Jim( Marilyn) Pravda,,Tammy (Rob)Danychuk, 12 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and 1 great, great grandchild. We have such wonderful memories of mom, especially her hugs, kisses and compliments. Mom was a great mother, wife, grandma, friend and neighbour.

Mom was known for her love of shopping, her sense of style and always appeared so very young. She never saw herself as “old.” Old to Mom was 100+which she was determined to reach. Mom had hoped to watch her great grandchildren grow up!

Our family expresses a sincere thank you for the care Mom received at the Biggar Hospital and adjoining Lodge. Also thank you to all who sent food, flowers, cards, phone calls and beautiful comments on social media. Mom always put her family first and we are certain she wouldn’t want us to be sad but instead to celebrate her life. At mom’ s request, there is no funeral. In July, we will celebrate her 98th birthday and lay her to rest beside the love of her life, dad, whom she always called her handsome prince. Mom loved her birthday parties so we will say our final goodbyes with a party.

Thank you from all of Mom’s family.

Splitting McDavid, Draisaitl sparks the Oilers

A common refrain around the National Hockey League for the last couple of seasons was that the Edmonton Oilers were nothing more than a two-man team and that two-man teams couldn’t possibly win a Stanley Cup. Sorry, Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, the hockey-following public didn’t like your chances. Playing on the same line meant offensive fireworks, but defensive problems while the other two lines tried their luck.

Suddenly, however, things changed. Oilers’ coach Dave Tippett apparently made a New Year’s resolution to split his two superstars - putting Draisaitl with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and the speedy mighty mite, minor-league callup Kailer Yamamoto, and McDavid with a variety of wing mates (Zack Kassian, Josh Archibald, newly acquired Tyler Ennis and Andreas Athanasiou were among the most regularly interchangeable parts).

It took only a few games, but suddenly Draisaitl stopped looking for McDavid - and vice-ver-

sa - and both carried on with offensive fireworks, meaning only one Oilers’ line had to concentrate on defence. And on that theme, opposing coaches could put their No. 1 defensive pairing on the ice against either Draisaitl or McDavid, but not both, further enhancing scoring chances for the Oil. Edmonton streaked to a 15-9-1 record in the first 25 games after Tippett’s line-changing experiment, which started on Dec. 31. The Oilers have become a Stanley Cup contender again, challenging Vegas Golden Knights for top spot in the Pacific Division.

Their power play, featuring Draisaitl and McDavid together, is No. 1 in the NHL, and their penalty killing numbers are in the league’s top five.
