Biggar Atom Nationals hit the Jubilee Stadium, Saturday, February 29 for an afternoon game versus the visiting Southwest Warriors. Nats never looked back, leading by the end of the first 4-2 and by the end of the second, 7-2, doubling up their tally in the third to end the game 14-2. A solid effort, the Nats were an unstoppable force on the afternoon.

Saskatchewan exports remained strong in 2019 According to Statistics Canada preliminary trade data 2019, Saskatchewan exported nearly $30 billion worth of products to international markets in 2019 and continued to provide the food, fuel and fertilizer the world needs.

“The success of our economy depends on trade and these numbers are very encouraging, especially considering the market access issues in countries such as China,” Trade and Export Development Minister Jeremy Harrison said. “Our government has made

it a priority to diversify markets for our products through trade missions and international engagement and the result of these efforts is unprecedented market diversification in a relatively short period of time. We will continue working to grow our exports, as outlined in Saskatchewan’s Plan for Growth, to build a strong economy that creates more jobs for a strong Saskatchewan.”

Saskatchewan’s top 10 export markets were the United States (U.S.), China, The European Union (EU), Japan, Bra-

zil, India, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Mexico and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Overall exports were down slightly by 3.0 per cent, due mainly to trade actions by China, which resulted in a decline in exports of 32 per cent to that market.

However, the decline in exports to China was partially offset by the growth in other emerging markets like Bangladesh (118 per cent increase), the EU (59 per cent), the UAE (40 per cent), India (23 per cent) and Brazil (13 per cent).

Saskatchewan’s top

export products included crude oil, potash, wheat, pulse crops, canola oil, barley, oats, agricultural machinery, and refined petroleum.

The Government of Saskatchewan maintained an aggressive trade mission agenda in over the past year. This included Premier and Ministerial trade missions to the U.S., Japan, South Korea, India, Mexico, Singapore, Bangladesh, the Philip-

pines, and the EU. Growing the province’s trade and exports is a key component of Saskatchewan’s Growth Plan.

The Plan includes goals to increase the value of exports by 50 per cent, grow the number of international markets to which Saskatchewan exports more than $1 billion annually, grow agri-food exports to $20 billion and increase the value of manufacturing exports by

50 per cent.

The plan includes several initiatives to help achieve these goals.

These include opening new international trade and investment offices in Japan, Singapore and India, undertaking SaskFirst new growth tax incentives, maintaining a competitive tax environment and expanding Saskatchewan’s export infrastructure.

by Cpl. Dereck Crozier, Biggar Detachment, NCO IC This past week the Biggar Detachment responded to 43 calls for service.

An overview shows there was five general traffic complaints, six suspicious activity concerns, 22 traffic education encounters and one collision with a deer, and a few other general matters.

The storm this past weekend caught a few

people off guard and members also found it difficult trying to reach those finding themselves in trouble on the highway. When conditions are not suitable for travel, it at times includes the “Buffalo Cab”. Thankfully the Biggar area managed through the storm with no serious mishaps on the Highways.

This past week we did have a few places in the Perdue area fall victim to a few thieves passing

through the area. There has been no further incidents as of late but we would ask that if you notice anything suspicious around your area such as vehicles or people around businesses at odd times or the early morning hours of 3 to 6 a.m., please give police a call.

The vehicle of interest this time, is a larger light coloured SUV such as a Yukon or Suburban.

The regular meeting of Biggar Town Council was held February 11, at 7:15 p.m. in the Council Chambers. Attending the meeting were Mayor Ray Sadler, Aldermen Kevin McNicholls, Kirk Sherbino, Edward Young, and Ivan Young.

Council resolved that the minutes of the January 21, 2020 Regular Meeting of Council be accepted as presented. Also, the minutes of the January 28, 2020 Committee Meeting of the Whole were accepted as presented.

Council resolved that the Fire Chief’s Report for the month of January 2020 be accepted as presented by Fire Chief Gerry Besse. The Recreation Director’s Report for the month of January 2020 was accepted as presented by Recreation Director Erin Poitras. The minutes of the February 3, 2020 Regular Meeting of the Biggar and District Recreation Board were accepted as presented and the recommendations therein were approved by Council. The Community Development Officer’s Report to

February 11, 2020 were accepted as presented by the Community Development Officer, D’Shae Bussiere.

Council resolved that the following financial reports for December 2019 be accepted as presented: Bank Reconciliation; Statement of Financial Activities.

With the upcoming music festival in Biggar, March 9-14, musicians of every level of talent, will hit the stage at the Majestic Theatre. Given a chance, they will put a smile on your face, a song in your heart, and wipe the anger from your soul.

In the first line of this treatise, I chose the original William Congreve misquote from his play “The Mourning Bride” where he used “breast”. It was felt he was referring to a wild or angry heart. Today we say beast, but, given today’s narcissistic climate and “angry hearts”, a little bit of music is needed.

So the Biggar Music Festival will cure what ails you.

Joyous song! No matter how technically proficient, if it has emotion . . . standing ovation! And the Majestic will ring with the songs and talents of those who have chosen to make music, have taken the time to practice, to worry over a missed note, to calm the butterflies before taking to the stage, and like the lyrics above, “take us out of this gloom”.

I encourage you to take some time this March 9-14 and see the talents that our area has to offer. Encourage those with the courage to take the stage, and encourage those to take the stage and make music a vital part of their language and an important part of all our lives.

In 2015, newly minted Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, in an unguarded moment with the New York Times, glibly declared “Canada is the world’s first post-national state”.

He described Canadians’ “core values” as openness, respect, compassion, willingness to work hard, “being there for each other”, and seeking equality and justice.

But Trudeau stated “there is no core identity, no mainstream in Canada.”

At the time, and since, it was easy to dismiss this as the undisciplined and pseudo-intellectual ramblings of an unserious mind. But in recent days there is a darker edge to this.

Perhaps in Justin Trudeau-land there really is no core Canadian identity; particularly in Western Canada nothing that anchors us - from long time to new Canadians to a common purpose or strives to unify us behind an ideal.

2012, near B.C.’s Morice River, blockades have been erected by a tiny group of Wet’suwet’en hereditary chiefs opposing Coastal GasLink’s natural gas pipeline, despite all 20 elected bands along the pipeline route supporting it, including the five Wet’suwet’en bands under the Indian Act. A bandowned business and many band members will work on the project.

In recent weeks, sympathy blockades have sprung up across the country. They invoke Indigenous rights and opposing pipelines in general, Coastal GasLink in particular and the shipment of liquid natural gas (LNG) to China.

It is difficult to under-

stand opposition to Canadian shipments to China of less carbon-dioxide intensive LNG to replace coal’s higher CO2 emissions and atmospheric pollution.

There are two reasons t h a t Justin Trudeau bears responsibility for the growing activism, barricades and contempt for law.

First, John Gormley his nons t o p c a m paign of piety, virtue signalling, grandstanding and lecturing us on the holy troika of Indigenous reconciliation and “balancing the economy with the environment”, has been a green light for many activists to stop all

oil and gas.

His second failing comes in his anemic response to the blockades which have inconvenienced thousands of people and cost the Canadian economy billions of dollars. Absent in the early days while trolling for UN Security Council votes in Africa and Europe, Trudeau literally phoned in suggestions that the dispute be fixed by “dialogue, negotiation, alignment, engagement, and consultation”.

As the blockage of the CN mainline near Belleville, Ontario, paralyzed passenger and freight service and resulted in many layoffs (1,500 railway employees alone) Trudeau supported the police decision to “keep the peace” by ignoring the enforcement of criminal, railway and trespass laws, and even allowing activists to flout Court injunctions. What followed was the predictable deterioration of public order and respect for law.

return to Canada was mired in inertia; the only decisive move was to bar Conservative leader Andrew Scheer from a leaders’ meeting because of Scheer’s “unacceptable speech” which suggested blockades come down and the law be enforced.

Three days later a humbled Trudeau made the same decree but, as expected, it has since been largely ignored.

National Post columnist Jon Kay has observed that recently Canada’s identity has transformed to a country convinced that we are “a genocide state”. Canadian media, academic and political elites, Kay rightly points out, are obsessed with the narrative that we are “an ugly scar on traditional Indigenous lands”, and the “whole vocabulary - settler, neo-colonial, appropriation – declares that Canada is garbage, hoping that an attitude of self-abasement would somehow lead us to ‘reconciliation’. We forgot that when garbage talks,

no one listens.”

In the midst of this, just hours before it was expected to be axed by the Trudeau Cabinet, Teck Resources withdrew its Frontier oil sands expansion, along with $21 billion dollars in spending, 2,500 permanent jobs, and $70 billion in tax revenue. This pushes to $120 billion the value of resource projects cancelled in the last three years.

Given the events of recent days, who does not believe this is merely a rehearsal for the anarchy that will come if the Trudeau governmentowned Transmountain pipeline extension ever tries to lay pipe?

Post-national Canada indeed.

during the Great Depression of the 1930’s, a lot of people had no ambition to be good at anything, but Dad’s three boys, raised on that old Chef Dez had for years homestead, dreamed of becoming big farmers and driving large teams of horses. We collected all kinds of harness ornaments, scotchtops and decorated bridles, but Y.T.’s great plans of being a “long line skinner” came to a sudden Bob Mason end . . . again!

Y.T. was working at the U of S in 1941 when he witnessed a debacle brought on when a University professional driver hollered “Giddyup” at the 16-horse team we had assembled so we could find out what their “drawbar rating” was.

We watched in helpless wonder as the whole mass of animals (four tandem, four abreast teams!) started to move, and just strolled away, uncontrolled, one by one, breaking much of the Kim Inglis harness and hitches it had taken us all week to get together.

If I remember right, it took a whole day before we got them all rounded up again!

For most of our rural lives, Y.T. hadn’t any idea of ever becoming a great (or any other) military type, and if Mrs. Hitler’s son hadn’t decided to overrun Europe, would have become a great agricultural guy.

But after waiting around for a while he finally found himself in the army, touring the “Old Country” under the auspices of the Canadian Government!

It wouldn’t do anything for the forces image if Daniels Y.T.Calvin related all then foolish moves we made. We marched (out of step!) on army parade square all across Canada, got bawled out by some sergeants because we got a little dirty and bawled out by others because we didn’t get dirty enough!

But despite all this mixed up stuff we finally got safely home and married the nicest girl in the country. One of the greatest successes this “has been” ever had!

Over the next few years Y.T. tried a lot of things in an effort to keep up with hisKim fastInglis moving neighbours, but it always seemed that no matter how much he did, everyone else was way out ahead, and to him this didn’t make sense!

by Joe Schmutz, GrandoraWith the warmer weather of March around the corner, it’s not just the air that will heat up.

Male Sharp-tailed Grouse, Saskatchewan’s provincial bird, will come to their traditional dancing grounds atop a grassy hill and defend a tiny territory of a few square metres hoping to be selected by several of the females that visit these grounds later in Spring.

The males strut with their feet in a dance that has been copied by First Nation ceremonial dancers. The grouse will hold their body horizontal, drop their wings, expose their bright yellow cere over the eyes and puff out their purple air sacs to give a cooing sound heard for hundreds of meters.

They also erect their grey and white tails showing off the tips of their two central tail feathers, hence the name “sharptailed” grouse.

The actual Prairie Chicken of the mid-western U.S. has a rounded tail. Prairie Chicken have been spotted in southern Saskatchewan only a few times and not in recent years. Ours are the Sharp-tailed Grouse that are widespread on the prairies and can be

found also in pockets in Ontario, the Yukon and B.C. My partner Ken Belcher and I have been counting grouse on dancing grounds in the Biggar and Perdue community pastures and adjacent Hunter lease for seven years, on 14 grounds in total.

We try to arrive before sunup, get on our Honda motorcycles and visit each ground. We first stop at a distance, count what we can see, then drive up to the ground and again count the number of birds that fly away.

Often the grouse fly back within minutes, sometimes while we are still busy stepping out the size of the ground and taking a GPS location.

The grounds are round or oval from 20 to 80 metres across. Grass on top of a hill is normally short and the grouse shorten it more by the trampling it for days on end. There are droppings scattered everywhere, proof of the many hours spent. A male does not want to miss a day’s attendance because it is harder to regain a temporarily vacated territory than to claim it day-in-and-dayout. Invariably there are feathers, tell-tale sign of the serious business of

cock fights to keep the neighbours in line.

It is the females who are in charge. When their time comes, they visit the edges of the grounds to size up the situation.

Eventually they select a male to mate with, typically in one of the central territories. The theory is that these central males are healthiest and most vigorous and more often than not have equally healthy and vigorous offspring. A female will mate with one or more males over several days, making sure that each of the dozen or so eggs in a clutch is fertilized before it is laid.

The location of the dancing ground is amazingly constant from year to year.

A ground is visited by males as long as females come to it. Females tend to nest within two kilometres of their chosen ground but only so long as they can find the mix of habitat they need to: hide their nest for three weeks of incubation, have adequate insect number within walking distance for their chicks, have a mix of open grass where grasshoppers hatch and dense grass where chicks can scatter and hide from predators. Finally, in the tall and dense shrubs like

Saskatoons, chokecherry and hawthorn, a hen can brood her young for the hours it takes to ride out the dangerous wet and cold summer weather which we occasionally get on the prairies.

The community pastures and lease land we visited to count grouse must be providing this kind of needed habitat.

During the seven years of counting so far, we found a total of 14 grounds.

During the first years of searching we found two grounds and were told of or discovered additional locations gradually. Despite continuing searches, listening and scanning with binoculars, we have not added new grounds in recent years.

This suggests that we’ve found most or all of the grounds present in the three areas. The nine dancing grounds on the 29 square kilometres Perdue community pasture

translate to one dancing ground for every 3.2 square kilometres. This is a very respectable density of grounds.

Over the years, we counted from one to 33 grouse on a dancing ground. Taking an average of grouse counted on all grounds visited in one year and plotting this average over the seven years of counting suggests stability in numbers.

Over the years, only two dancing grounds have been abandoned. One ground was very small, with few droppings and only three grouse attending. This ground was used in 2015 and not since then.

Another ground had only one grouse attending but with many droppings suggesting use by a good many grouse earlier in the mornings. This ground was used only in 2012, when scattered flight feathers suggested

that a grouse was killed there. The next nearest ground was unusually close, only 0.8 km away.

It is plausible that the males that abandoned this site simply joined the males on the nearby ground.

A grouse killed does not immediately lead to abandonment. Another ground, where feathers and body parts indicated a grouse kill, had a golden eagle roosting nearby on two of our three visits.

This ground remains alive and well and has one of the highest attendance.

In the coming spring, Ken and I expect to document that chicken romance is alive and well once more in these Coteau Hills of Saskatchewan. The community pastures we visit are well managed with a mix of habitat of the kind that likely sustained grouse for thousands of years in the past.

While farmers have more immediate data to influence decisions, in the end it often will come down to the simplest of signals, the price the marketplace offers.

Farmers do all the modern technology that is out there to aid marketing, in the end become price takers. They cannot set prices for what they sell, ultimately taking what they see as the best price they can achieve. Naturally when a price jumps, farmers take notice and start to scribble some numbers to see if they might opt for that crop in the spring.

When prices hit the skids farmers consider paring back acres.

It is often the decisions

producers make to alter acres being planted that sends the message to the marketplace which can topple high prices or bolster low. That is particularly true in niche crops, which realistically on the Canadian Prairies is all crops beyond hard spring

wheat, barley and canola.

The jumps in and out of a crop may be more limited today because of farmers adherence to long term cropping rotations, but the need to find a crop which can generate a positive margin over the cost of production

does influence even the most stringent rotation plans, especially at times when farm incomes are pinched.

Charts and information are of course an asset but ultimately, price often is the key signal for farmers.

Japan Holds Men-Only Naked Festival - ‘Hadaka Matsuri’ (Oddee)Thousands braved the highways on February 15 for the annual ‘Naked Festival,’ or Hadaka Matsuri.

The Hadaka Matsuri is a wild and loud festival held every year on the third Saturday of February at the Saidaiji Kannonin Temple in Japan.

There are about 10,000 or so male participants (there aren’t female participants in the festival - it’s run by men) wear minimal clothing. Usually they wear a Japanese loincloth called ‘fundoshi’ and a pair of white socks called ‘tabi.’ The festival, which celebrates the blessings of a bountiful harvest (as well as prosperity and fertility), starts around 3:20 p.m. local time.

In the evening, the men spend an hour or two running around the temple grounds in preparation and purify themselves with cold water, before cramming themselves into the main temple building. After an hour

or two of running in the temple, everyone crams into the main building.

The lights go out at 10 p.m., a priest throws 100 bundles of twigs and two lucky 20-centimeter-long shingi sticks into the crowd from a window four meters above. This is when the commotion begins.

10,000 men cram into a room like sardines in a can. They fight for one of the bundles of sticks.

Whoever succeeds is guaranteed a year of good fortune, according to legend. The whole thing lasts 30 minutes and participants usually emerge with a few cuts, bruises, and sprained joints. Visitors come from all across Japan and a few from abroad to take part. Some attend the event alone, but many participants join as part of teams representing local businesses.

The festival evolved from a ritual that started 500 years ago, during the Muromachi Period (1333-

1573). The villagers competed to grab paper talismans, which were given out by a priest at the temple. More and more villagers wanted those lucky talismans and the ritual grew in size. However, they realized that the paper would rip when people fought for it. The ritual was also performed fully clothed, but they felt that the clothes got in the way.

They designated as an ‘Important Intangible Folk Cultural Asset’ in 2016. It’s actually one of several ‘naked festivals’ they hold throughout Japan. Another they hold in Yotsukaido. Men in loincloths fight and carry kids through the mud as a method of exorcism. Before the Okayama event, there is an afternoon of traditional dances. Then they hold a performance by a troupe of female drummers.

This is the only festivities that the women participate in.

South African priest drugs himself and congregation in show of faith

A priest in South Africa took it upon himself to prove his church’s faith in their god. And what better way to prove that faith makes you superhuman then drinking poison?

Priest Light Monyeki is from Soshanguve, South

Africa, and he decided to perform a dangerous stunt. He claimed to his congregation they should not fear death, as they can not die (for they would be immortal) if they had true faith - or so he claimed.

So he took a bottle of water and filled it with rat poison.

The priest took a big

drink from the poison.

And of course, many of his followers ran forward to take a drink. Monyeki proceeded to pour the drink down the throats of his loyal congregation.

Five died and 13 were put in the hospital, but he denied responsibility.

7 Creepy Things Caught by Doorbell Cameras (Oddee) Home surveillance has never been easier or more affordable.

Installing a doorbell camera provides safety from porch thieves, potential burglars, and neighborhood prowlers.

Those cameras also capture a lot of creepy situations. There’s no end to the strange, scary, or just plain bizarre things people have seen while checking on their front door while they were at work or out of town.

Here are seven creepy things caught by doorbell cameras.

Rat snake . . . Texas.

Depending on your personal feelings about reptiles, seeing this video from your doorbell camera might force you to

replace your doorknob or your entire front door. A woman checked a phone notification from her doorbell camera, and saw a big rat snake slithering over the deadbolt, handle and then just crawling along the front of the door itself.

Package thief . . . California. One of the major reasons people get doorbell cameras is to catch porch thieves in the act.

But there’s not much you can do about it, even if you witness the theft in real time. That was the case in California when a man checked his phone to watch an adorable labrador sneak onto his porch, grab an Amazon box and, tail-wagging, run back through his yard. At least

the culprit was too cute for the homeowner to get mad, even though he lost the package.

Clown . . . San Antonio. A quick search of YouTube will show that there’s a definite phenomenon of clowns triggering doorbell cameras all across the country. Some of them, or most of them, people stage to get views, but at least one is real.

In San Antonio, a woman checked her phone alert to discover a man in a clown mask, holding a pillowcase, saying “trick or treat smell my feet.” The video shows the man checking beneath the doormat, maybe for a spare key, and then depart.

Doorbell licker . . . California. A man spent three

hours in the middle of the night licking the doorbell of a strangers’ home. The residents didn’t hear the man during the hourslong bizarre behaviour.

The man also moved an extension cord around the front yard and relieved himself in view of the camera. Because of the clear footage and the fact that the man had previous arrests for narcotics charges, police soon apprehended and questioned him.

Hacker . . . Mississippi. A hacker infiltrated a doorbell camera set up in a child’s room and activated the two-way talk feature. He yells racial slurs, says he’s Santa Claus and her best friend, and tells her to destroy

her room and smash her television. The 8-year-old looks around confused, before becoming frightened and leaving the room to get her father.

The dad unplugged the camera, and there’s still no sign of who the hacker might be.

Kidnapping . . . Los Angeles. A doorbell camera recorded a car drive by with a woman screaming for help in the back.

Concerned neighbours called police, reporting the potential kidnapping but after canvassing they found no evidence of a crime committed. Besides the footage from the camera, an eyewitness saw the man drag the woman into the back of a car, and heard him apologize

before speeding away.

Police have yet to identify the victim.

TVs . . . Virginia. In a seemingly harmless stunt a man, wearing a box TV over his head and a blue jumpsuit, walks onto the front porches of homes and leaves behind a box TV set. The incident has happened twice so far, once in August 2018 and again a year later. The first night a dozen homes found the footage and a television left behind.

In 2019, the number of homes increased to 50.

Residents of Virginia suburbs might want to monitor the doorbell cameras this summer.

Chef Dez on Cooking – Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with Irish Fare There are a number of novelty consumables that consistently reappear in the marketplace during the days leading up to March 17.

These will most undoubtedly include items such as green tinted beverages like beer and milkshakes for example.

Although this may be an amusing way to recognize St. Patrick, the Patron Saint of Ireland, a culinary adventure of Irish cuisine would be more nostalgic, in my opinion.

There are a number of traditional Irish dishes that one can prepare to make the dinner table a celebratory venue in recognition of St. Patrick’s Day. Potatoes continue to be a staple in Irish cuisine but there are many dishes, with or without potatoes, which capture the essence of their timehonored meals.

Dublin Coddle is a recipe that first comes to mind when thinking about Irish food. It is a dish that consists of panfrying sausages, bacon, onions, and garlic before placing them on potatoes slices in a casserole dish and baking together with some broth and seasonings. The seasonings can be as simple as using some dried sage with salt and pepper.

Colcannon is a very tra-

ditional vegetarian dish consisting of a mashed combination of potatoes with cabbage. The potatoes are cooked and m a s h e d while the cabbage is pan-fried with butter and onions before being combined with the m a s h e d potatoes with some milk or cream and seasoned to taste.

S o d a Bread is a common accompaniment to many meals. It is a simple quick bread that rises with the chemical combination reaction of buttermilk with baking soda. There are many varieties of this recipe and my favorite includes the addition of wheat germ. The classic shape of this bread is round with the surface scored with a knife four times in star shaped pattern.

Lamb and Beef Stews are also very popular as one-dish meals in Ireland.

Many also can include the addition of Guinness beer - a delicious black stout from Dublin.

A classic sweet with a

cup of tea would be Irish Tea Brack. It is similar to a fruit cake but made without butter or margarine, and has no candied fruit. Raisins and l e m o n rind usually grace this heavy cake along with Irish whiskey, and warm spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice.

When the Trees Crackle with Cold” in the museum A new art exhibition by Miriam Korner with Bernice Johnson-Laxdal will be at the Biggar Museum and Gallery.

Miriam Korner and Bernice Johnson-Laxdal have collaborated to bring us a series of watercolour paintings depicting the Cree moon calendar through JohnsonLaxdal’s childhood memories. The original paintings that were printed in a children’s book of the same title make up this fascinating exhibition.

Bernice Johnson-Laxdal grew up in a family of 13 siblings in Ile-a-laCrosse, Saskatchewan’s second oldest community. Miriam Korner grew up in the bustling city life of Germany.

Miriam fell in love with northern Saskatchewan fourteen years ago during a dog sled race that led across wind-swept Bigstone Lake. Little did she know then that the unforgiving vast wilderness of northern Saskatchewan would become her intimately known backyard or Bernice her neighbour.

Bernice, showed Miriam the traditional Cree moon calendar and told her stories of her family’s traditional activities.

Although Bernice and Miriam grew up worlds apart they found a connection through their understanding of nature and a deep respect for the people whose life-style followed the natural cycle of nature.

This exhibition celebrates northern Saskatchewan and its peo-

ple. It is a homage to a unique place, where we can all learn important lessons about respect for the land and each other and move towards a common understanding of northern Saskatchewan’s history and our place within it. Growing up in Germany Miriam felt disconnected to the natural world. Now, living in northern Saskatchewan helps her to find the lost connection. She is still learning.

Dear Rebecca: Through some investigation, I have determined that “Rumbledethumps” is a Scottish dish that is almost identical to the Irish dish “Colcannon”. It is a mixture of

pan-fried cabbage with white onion stirred into mashed potatoes. The difference is that Rumbledethumps is baked with the inclusion of grated cheddar cheese mixed in and melted on top of the

dish.

She intended it to be for only one month . . . and left me instructions on what to put out for February. She then went off to see family in the States. At the end of January there was only one submission in the can, so, we decided let’s keep this out one more month… someone must know what this is!

At the end of February, back in beautiful Biggar, she discovered a few more submissions, and some even had the right answer on them! We drew from the pile of correct submissions, and Dustin Hayward from Lumsden had figured it out . . . it was an X-ray Scanner!

Dustin was in town visiting friends and came to

the museum, and the rest is history!

Dustin’s friend from Biggar collected his prize, a bag full of Biggar good-

ies, and will be delivering it to him!

It’s nice to know that the world comes to Biggar, even in January!

Mary was born on February 3, 1935 to Frank and Julianna Koller. She was born on the farm and heart remained with the farm until her last stories could be told. She took great pride in her farm, garden and flowers, but mostly her family, grandchildren and having spent countless hours and days farming with Martin.

In 2018 Mary was forced to leave the farm for health reasons as dementia began stealing her days and thoughts. On january 18, 2020 after 4 years of making Biggar Long Term Care her home, Mary passed away peacefully with her rosary in her hand and family at her side.

Left to mourn her passing with treasured memories: Daughter Cheryl(Norman) Haynes and their family Andrew, Stuart(Laryssa); Daughter Laurie Heese and her family Kyle(jolene) and their family Aubrey & Vivian; Kim Heese; Son Doug(Ang) and their children Jordon & Jenna; Son Jeff(Teri). Sister Ann Vizer; Sister in laws Agnes Small & Pauline Leibel.

Mary was predeceased by her husband Martin and daughter Gwen.

Faith was extremely important to Mary praying her rosary several times a day. Prayers and Mass of Christian burial were held in Landis on January 24th & 25th. Mary loved attending church in Landis and enjoyed several special hymns, thank you to the Landis choir for honoring her with these songs during her service. Special thanks to Dr.Muller and Biggar LTC staff for their friendship and care. Thank you to everyone for the visits, phone calls, food and flowers during difficult days. Friends and family that visited over the years know how special these moments were to Mary, many were treated to her special layer cakes, strudel and apple pies.

The custodian will take care of various Town facilities and carry out cleaning duties. The goal is to keep our buildings in a clean, orderly, and maintained condition. Hours will vary depending on facility bookings.

Duties and Responsibilities;

--Clean and maintain various Town facilities (dusting, sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, cleaning ceiling vents, restroom cleaning etc).

--Notify management of occurring deficiencies, maintenance issues, and needs for repairs.

--General yard maintenance and beautification (watering trees and flowers, weeding, etc).

--Cooperate with the rest of the staff.

--Follow all health and safety regulations.

Qualifications

--Previous experience in custodial work is preferred.

--Close attention to detail and sense of discipline.

--Self motivated.

--Commitment to safe work practices.

Sports & Recreation Ayres’ ‘Walter Mitty’ story a hockey treat

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty came alive in late February in front of a nation-wide TV audience viewing Hockey Night in Canada.

In the blink of an hour or so on a Saturday night, David Ayres became a household name across Canada and by Monday, his “15 minutes of fame” splashed across North America.

And now, hockey analyst Brian Burke and other influential voices around the National Hockey League are saying they want to take steps to ensure it never happens again.

Why? It was the greatest story of the NHL season to date, shuffling to the side all the talk about concussions, injuries, assaults, suspensions and teams tanking.

Details of the story need not be told, but here’s the Coles notes: If you’re reading this column, dedicated to sports, you know all about Ayres, the Zamboni driver who was an emergency goalie in Toronto suddenly thrust into the middle of

a Leafs-Carolina game. In true Walter Mitty fashion, he went on to win the game and then did a whirlwind circuit of talk shows, sports interview programs and late night TV comedy programs on Monday.

He got paid $500 for his approximate 30 minutes of work in goal for Carolina, plus he got to keep his Canes’ jersey. He might also share in some of the royalties from “Ayres 90” jersey sales. As for the memories? Well, that was worth untold millions.

Thirty years from now, his grandchildren will be begging him to quit talking about Feb. 22, 2020.

Less than 48 hours after Burke grouchily told TV viewers that the Ayres situation was an embarrassment to the NHL, governors reportedly started talking about a review of the “EBUG” (emergency backup goalie) situation.
