St. Gabriel School kids put their acting skills on display for their annual Christmas Concert, December 19. The kids took the birth of Jesus, putting a unique and fun twist that only kids can deliver. It was a wonderful way to sit back and get ready for a time of family and friends, of joy and peace, and one of the most important events in all of history! Due to events and the press of time and deadlines, Biggar Central School’s concert will be featured in our next issue! (Independent Photos by Kevin Brautigam)

Saskatchewan continues to grow Saskatchewan’s population grew by another 4,195 people in the third quarter of 2019, to an all-time high of 1,178,657 people. This represents the 54th consecutive quarter of population growth in Saskatchewan. “Saskatchewan continues to enjoy the longest and strongest period of sustained population growth since the 1920s,” Trade and Export Development Minister Jeremy Harrison said. “Since our government took office in 2007, Saskatchewan
has now grown by nearly 170,000 people.” Last month, Premier Scott Moe released the government’s new Growth Plan to ensure the 2020s are another decade of strong growth for the province. “Our new Growth Plan includes goals of 1.4 million people living in Saskatchewan and 100,000 more jobs in our province by 2030,” Harrison said. “More people, jobs and opportunities means a better quality of life for everyone who calls Saskatchewan home.”

A perfect storm for Saskatchewan farmers by Todd Lewis, President, Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan (APAS) If ever there was a time when we needed a strong voice to stand up for our industry, it was this past year. 2019 was a difficult year for farmers and ranchers in this province, and APAS worked hard at being Saskatchewan’s agricultural voice at many venues and tables across Canada. In 2020 we’ll dig deep to keep learning about the issues raised by our membership, have productive discussions, and offer constructive solutions to problems
facing Saskatchewan producers. Sask. farmers faced weather problems in 2019, and many other issues besides. China closed its borders to Canadian canola, pork, and beef imports. The carbon tax began to affect producers’ bottom lines, especially those drying grain. Crop pricing and grading has become unpredictable. We had yet another rail service disruption. Farm income is down 45 per cent from two years ago and we are seeing the results in the economy. Just talk to the farm machinery dealers; sales
have collapsed on many types of equipment. Producers using grain dryers were particularly hard hit in 2019 by the added cost of the carbon tax. It is both frustrating and ironic that one of the most easily recognizable adaptations to climate change – grain drying – has been targeted by the carbon tax. Without this valuable tool and innovation, many more millions of acres would be left out in Sask. fields this winter and tens of millions of bushels of harvestable crops would be at risk of spoilage or prove unsellable due to tough

and damp conditions. In 2020 APAS will continue to work towards carbon tax exemptions for essential farm activities such as grain drying and transportation. Business risk management programming is ineffective to mitigate the current problems. We are experiencing an almost perfect storm of problems in our international trade environment. The well-documented trade disruptions between Canada and our major t r a d i n g partners in India, China, Italy, and Saudi Arabia have had a negative impact on the price we receive for our products. At the same time, our input prices are being artificially supported upwards by US farm policy that is transferring billions of dollars to the American farm sector to mitigate income issues caused by US trade wars. Saskatchewan producers require a better backstop from both the
provincial and federal governments to address the current income shortfalls being experienced by many Sask. produc-
ers. APAS will continue to offer up ideas to make current programs more relevant as well as designing new programs to help producers get past our current trade problems. The results of the federal election make for an interesting lobbying environment at the federal level. We will continue to talk to all political parties at all levels of gov-
ernment. It is our job to talk about farm policies to the people that form government as well as the opposition. APAS is well situated to lobby a m i n o r ity government. We are recognized and trusted as being nonpartisan and look forward to working with Sask. MPs as well as all federal parties to improve policies for Saskatchewan producers. In 2019, A P A S retained 98 per cent of participating RMs and welcomed nine more transitional members, for a total of 137 RMs. As we prepare to celebrate 20 years as Saskatchewan’s general farm organization in July 2020, these numbers mark an all-time membership high. We have never been a stronger voice for Saskatchewan producers, and there is no better time to join us. Todd Lewis farms near Gray, Sask.

Christmas comes from the farm by Calvin Daniels If one thing the holiday season means - it’s good food - lots and lots of good food. We spend a great deal of time in December running from office party to neighbour’s for some holiday cheer and then of course family gatherings, all of them fuelled by platters of food. It’s difficult to imagine sitting down to a meal on December 25, and not eating way too much turkey, along with perogies and sour cream, sweet potatoes, ham, fruit cake, and more. Then there are the three days of left overs, turkey croquettes, turkey salad sandwiches, turkey soup, to the point by the end we curl up in a heap on the chesterfield, stare at the Christmas lights, and occasionally gobble quietly like the departed bird.

Healthy habits for the new year (NC) New year, new start, new you? With the start of the new year, many of us are thinking of ways to make healthier changes in our daily lives. But it’s easy to get overwhelmed with the amount of information and options out there. That’s why registered dietitian Sue Mah encourages us to think about our eating habits. “Healthy eating isn’t just about what you eat, it’s
about how you eat too,” she says. “Take time to be aware of your thoughts, feelings and behaviours with food.” Here are some ways to be mindful of your eating habits in your day-to-day routine. Tune into your hunger cues. Notice why you’re eating. Are you eating because you’re actually hungry? Or are you reaching for food when you’re feeling bored, sad
or upset, or maybe when you’re just craving something sweet or salty? Be aware of when you’re feeling full. Enjoy meals with all your senses. Pay attention to the colours, textures, tastes and smells of food and beverages. You already know that 100% orange juice is an excellent source of vitamin C. Listen to the crunch of a ripe red apple or take in the wonderful aroma of
a homemade soup filled with colourful veggies. Eat with others. Connect with others through food every day. Whether you’re having a quick breakfast at home, sharing recipes over lunch at the office or cooking a busy weeknight’s dinner with the family, turn off the TV and other distractions. Take time to enjoy mealtimes together and catch up on the day’s events.
Why exercising in winter is so important

Fortunately, staying active helps regulate the amount of calories that you take in during the winter and has the added benefit of boosting your mental health by fighting off the winter blahs. OBITUARIES Erin Nicole Martin (nee Evashenko) January 10, 1974 to December 3, 2019 Erin Nicole Martin (nee Evashenko) passed away unexpectedly on December 3, 2019 at St. Paul’s Hospital in Saskatoon. Erin is survived by her loving husband, Jeffrey Hoogeveen; daughter, Dielle Martin and her daughter Evva; son, Daylen Martin; son, Hayden Hoogeveen; sister, Carla Evashenko and her daughter Jelena; brother, Brent (Sherisse) Evashenko and their children, Maxim, Mia and Melanie; and grandmother, Mary Kotyk. Erin was predeceased by her mother, Sharon Evashenko (1989) and her father Adam Evashenko (1999). Erin was born January 10, 1974 to her loving parents, Adam and Sharon Evashenko. Erin grew up on the family farm with her brother Brent and sister Carla. As a farm child, Erin had a great love of being outdoors, caring for pets and riding horses. Erin graduated with honours from the Biggar Composite High School in 1992. That same year Erin was blessed with the birth of her
daughter, Dielle. In September of 1992 Erin and Darryl Martin were married and moved into their first home in Biggar. In 1996, Erin gave birth to a beautiful son they named Daylen. Erin and Darryl built a house south east of the farm where Erin grew up. Erin taught her children well. She encouraged Dielle and Daylen to pursue activities and sports they enjoyed. She loved watching Dielle’s dancing and supported Daylen’s motorbike activities. Erin started her career with the Prairie West Regional College when she accepted the Office Administrative Assistant position. She soon became the Executive Assistant and then a Human Resources Officer. Erin’s passion for helping people led Erin to become an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) with Biggar Ambulance. In 2004, Erin and Jeff resumed a high school relationship and Erin, Dielle and Daylen moved to Jeff’s family farm. Erin and Jeff’s son, Hayden, was born January 2, 2006. Erin and Jeff were married on March 2, 2009. After purchasing the family home quarter in 2007, they grew the farm with the help of Jeff’s parents. As the farm grew, many employees were added. Erin’s brother, Brent, would come in the spring to help with seeding and return each fall for the harvest. Christmas, holidays and family time were important to Erin. Brent, Carla, Erin and their families always tried to spend Christmases together. Erin was an excellent cook and she enjoyed being with her family and friends. Erin loved being auntie to Jelena, Maxim, Mia and Melanie and she always made sure to find time to visit her Grandmother,
SULLY, Dorothy Lorraine

Mary Kotyk in Yorkton. Erin loved golfing with Hayden, Jeff and friends at the lake and in Arizona. The Lake House at Martinson’s Beach and the Park Model in Arizona were Erin’s favorite holiday places. Erin also enjoyed their many motorhome trips to different places in the summertime. Erin enjoyed hunting, she would spend hours scouting game, setting up hunting blinds, cameras and making bait piles. Each year, after harvest, Erin and Brent would go hunting together. In 2017 Erin became a grandmother (Gam-Gam) to Evva, Dielle’s daughter. Erin was so excited when Dielle and Evva moved home to Biggar. Erin encouraged Hayden to try many things and when he started racing motorcycles with the Saskatoon Track and Trail Club Erin watched with pride. She became an enthusiastic fan and supporter. After two years, he joined the Saskatoon Stock Car Racing Club and drove the #25 Bandalero for 2 years and then #25 Legend car. Erin was unable to attend the 2019 Season Windup and Awards Ceremony but was able to watch Hayden receive his 2 awards from her hospital room via live stream. Erin was so proud. Through our tears at her loss, we see we were blessed to have her in our lives and will love her forever. A Celebration of Life in Erin’s Honour was held December 8th at the Biggar Community Hall. Donations in Erin’s memory can be made to Stars Air ambulance, Bear Hills Wildlife Federation or Saskatoon Stock Car Racing Club

CARD OF THANKS
Thank You
Erin Martin’s family would like to extend a sincere thank you to all the family, friends and neighbours who so kindly and compassionately supported us with visits, cards, texts, calls, food and flowers. If was comforting to know so many people touched her life and cared. Your concern and help meant more to us than mere words can adequately express and made it possible for us to cope and find the resilience to face this new reality without Erin. We especially want to thank the physicians, nursing, EMS and support services staff in Biggar and Saskatoon and STARS Air Ambulance. 1cgfh

Crackersthe for New Year’s Eve
With New Year fs Eve fast approaching, many people are looking for unique foods to serve at their midnight soiree. One of the recipes we always turn to for our cheese & cracker platter is my wife fs Cheddar Sesame Crackers. These are very simple to prepare, very flavorful, made with whole wheat, and a single recipe will produce four to five dozen crackers. People at your party will be addicted to these and being that most will get crackers from a box, they will be amazed that you made them from scratch. Happy New Year to you. I wish you all the best of health, happiness, and prosperity in
