Our day camp is based on a summer theme that we incorporate into each week of camp. Our younger campers’ activities include arts and crafts, outdoor exploration, science experiments, imaginative play, movement, music, and splash pool time. For our older campers, activities include team building and team challenges, arts and crafts, sports and games, drama and film making, science, computers, outdoor exploration, tennis lessons, weekly field trips, and recreational swimming. Our camp provides an enriching, fun, and exceptional day. Our campers have plenty of opportunities to discover new talents, try new activities, and gain independence while building lasting friendships and fabulous memories.
Instructor: Mrs. Ann Veazey, Independence Substitute Teacher Cooking isn’t just for grownups! These campers will have a fun-packed week of cooking and learning new things in the kitchen. Campers will create healthy snacks, plus have fun making aprons and their very own cookbook. The best part? Campers get to enjoy the snacks they make every day! CHESS CAMP When: June 25 – 29 and/or July 16 – 20 Age level: Grades 2 – 8 Time: 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Cost: $225 Instructor: Mr. Gregory Rogers, founder and coach of Chess Masters of DE Chess Masters of DE has been teaching chess in schools since 2008. It was founded in Pope John Paul II School by Coach Gregory Rogers. Since then, the club has expanded to several schools in New Castle County and Pennsylvania. Everyone recognizes the benefits of teaching chess to children and adolescents, making Chess Masters of DE thrive. Coach Greg understands how chess can assist the youth to make good choices in and out of the classroom. His approach to teaching is always patience with dedication and commitment. This camp will empower children with lifelong skills at home, out of the home, at school, and throughout their lives. Topics covered include making a positive first impression (eye contact, posture, handshakes, remembering names, confidence, grooming), table manners (correct use of utensils, interacting with servers, voice moderation, excusing oneself from the table, trying different foods), and digital diplomacy (writing appropriate emails, social media dos and don’ts). This camp’s culminating activity will be a dining experience where the children practice their skills. VITAL LIFE SKILLS: “I CAN DO THAT” When: June 25 – 29 Age level: Grades 3 – 5 Time: 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Cost: $225 Instructor: Ms. Vita Biddle, Independence Learning Specialist, LeApps™ Instructor and Sixth-Grade Literature Teacher The camp is designed to teach all those skills that young children should know. Your child will learn how to sew a button, tell time on an analog clock, work with fractions in measurement, count change, tip at a restaurant, write and endorse a check, balance a checkbook, and more!
With the help of time machines, we’ll spend the week jumping through time exploring history. We could start our morning mining for gold in 1849 California, then hop over to Ancient Egypt before lunch. From the days of the dinosaurs to 100 years in the future, there’s no limit to our travel possibilities. With our imaginations leading the way, who knows what we’ll discover? UNDER THE SEA (maximum 20 participants) When: July 9 – 13 Age level: ECI (3 yrs) – Grade 1 Time: 9:00 a.m. – noon Cost: $250 Instructor: Mrs. Laura Fallon, Independence World Language Teacher Fish, Turtles, and Sharks — Oh, my! Does your child love the ocean? If so, this is the perfect camp! Campers will learn about all kinds of animals in the ocean and even create their own aquarium to bring home. Each day, they will read and sing about, create, and celebrate all things associated with the ocean. There’s no doubt that this camp will be a whale of a good time!

SAILING CAMP (maximum 10 participants) When: July 16 – 19 and July 23 – 26 (No Friday lessons) Age level: Grades 3 – 8 Time: 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Cost: $525
GLAMORIZE YOUR DOLL When: August 6 – 10 Age level: Grades 2 – 7 Time: 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Cost: $440
Learn to sail with U.S. Sailing-certified instructors in a safe environment. Campers will be provided transportation by van to North East River Yacht Club in North East, MD, for this unique experience. No previous sailing experience is required. Whether you are a beginner, intermediate or advanced sailor, you will build the skills to navigate a sailboat and advance to higher levels. Don’t forget to pack your lunch, since you will be out on the water. Sailors must attend both weeks. Day Camp is available for Fridays, if needed.
Get set for some serious fashion fun! Glamorize Your Doll is designed for campers who have the desire to create trendy clothes and accessories for their very own 18” doll. Patient, kind, and skilled Handwork Studio counselors will teach machine and hand-sewing, embroidery, and other embellishing techniques to allow each camper to craft unique creations for his or her doll. Camp includes all materials, from sewing machines to fabric. Just bring your own doll* and imagination! Join the fun! * Dolls are always welcome but please leave accessories at home.
BACKYARD SUMMER GAMES (maximum 20 participants) When: July 23 – 27 Age level: Grades 5 – 8 Time: 9:00 a.m. – noon Cost: $225 Instructor: Mr. Daniel Kitching, Independence Director of Bands Come for a week of fun in the sun at a relaxed pace, as you’re shown the ins and outs of whiffle ball, kickball, and other light outdoor sporting activities. Enjoy both friendly competition and camaraderie with your peers. SHIVER ME TIMBERS! Do you like adventure? Do you want to discover hidden treasure? Then let your imagination set sail during this fun-filled camp! Create your own ship to compete in a STEM challenge, explore which treasures sink and float, and follow a treasure map to discover hidden loot! You will sing songs, read stories, and complete crafts as you think like an explorer. Don’t forget your swimsuit — you may be asked to walk the plank!

FASHION & MACHINE SEWING CAMP When: August 6 – 10 or August 13 – 17 Age level: Grades 4 – 10 Time: 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Cost: $490 Instructor: Handwork Studio staff Whether you are an aspiring fashion designer or a creative camper looking for new skills, immerse yourself in the wonderful world of machine sewing! Designed with older campers in mind, this program is all about choice and creative expression. Campers will be taught how to read and use a wide variety of Simplicity Creative Group patterns, as well as pick projects from our favorite book, “Sewing in a Straight Line,” by Brett Bara. In addition to a catalog of over 20 patterns, campers get to choose from dozens and dozens of tempting fabrics to bring style and flare to every creation. There are more than enough options to keep you coming back week after week and year after year. * New on-trend pattern selection added for 2018 Note: Campers may attend one or both weeks.
HANDWORK DAY CAMP When: August 13 – 17 Age level: Kindergarten – Grade 7 Time: 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Cost: $440 Instructor: Handwork Studio staff Picture your child in the care of energetic and imaginative counselors exploring the world of needlearts. At Handwork Day Camp, you’ll find campers sharing stories and laughs while working on a wide array of unique projects. Our goal is to teach useful skills such as hand-sewing, embroidery, knitting, weaving, needlefelting, and much more! Campers are always free to express themselves and are enveloped in creativity and fun. Whether refining skills or learning brand new ones, our camp is sure to delight. Join the fun! GHOST HUNTING CAMP When: August 13 – 17 Age level: Grades 5 – 8 Time: 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Cost: $250 Instructor: Mr. Kevin McDonald, Summer at Independence Director and Middle School English Teacher Let’s get metaphysical! Ghost Hunting Camp will take campers to some of the (supposedly) most haunted places in Delaware. First, we will research the stories behind these spooky places. Once there, we will observe and record any signs of our friends from the “other side.” Back at Indy, we will review our results and publish our findings. We might not prove or disprove anything, but it will be a lot of fun!
H Visual and Performing H Arts Camps MY FIRST CAMP WITH STRINGS When: July 2 – 6 (closed Wednesday) Age level: Grades 1 – 4 Time: 9:00 a.m. – noon Cost: $180 Instructor: Mrs. Banu Fields, Independence Strings Instructor Come and get to know your favorite member of the strings family this summer! A violin, a viola, or maybe a cello! If you are a beginner, this week will be a great time to learn how to play a string instrument. If you already know how to play, then polish off your technique and learn new music. Students are expected to bring their own instruments to class. INDY ROCK CAMP I When: July 9 – 13 Age level: Grades 6 – 8 Time: 9:00 a.m. – noon Cost: $250 Instructor: Mr. Daniel Kitching, Independence Director of Bands Get ready to rock! Campers will learn to play basic guitar, bass guitar, keyboard, and drums to classic rock songs, then show off their skills on stage at the end of the week. Instruments will be available, but campers are encouraged to bring their own guitars or bass if they own them. No prior musical experience necessary.

INDY ROCK CAMP II (maximum 10 participants) When: July 16 – 20 Age level: Grades 6 – 8 Time: 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Cost: $450 Instructor: Mr. Daniel Kitching, Independence Director of Bands Students who have attended Indy Rock Camp have the opportunity for an even more focused and challenging week of learning great rock tunes on the guitar, bass guitar, keyboard, and drums. Prior experience strongly recommended. BEGINNING ACTING When: July 23 – 27 Age level: Grades 1 – 5 Time: 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Cost: $450 Instructor: Child Drama Workshops staff Your child’s exciting week at camp will include theatre games, improvisation, acting techniques, monologues, creative movement, character building, and audition techniques. The week will conclude with the creative production of an original play — complete with professional direction, choreography, and makeup. STOP MOTION PHOTOGRAPHY CAMP When: July 23 – 27 Age level: Grades 5 – 8 Time: 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Cost: $225 Instructor: Miss McKenzie Walsh, Independence Extended Day Staff The Nightmare Before Christmas, Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and many other movies are made using stop motion. In this camp, students will not only learn the ins and outs of shooting stop motion, but they will also learn leadership skills from Miss Walsh, who is a graduate of Delaware Technical Community College with degrees in multimedia and advertising design. At the end, they will know how to write, shoot, direct, and communicate with each other to create their finished project.

WHAT DO YOU DO WITH SIX STRINGS? When: July 30 – August 3 Age level: Grades 5 – 8 Time: 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Cost: $250 Instructor: Mrs. Banu Fields, Independence Strings Instructor Would you like to be a one-man band or accompany your friends while singing? Then you need to come to this camp! Join us for a week of exploring the guitar! Learn to play chords, play rhythm guitar, and read music! Campers will need to bring their own acoustic guitars. CREATIVE DRAMA When: July 30 – August 3 Age level: ECI (3 yrs) – Kindergarten Time: 9:00 a.m. – noon Cost: $350 Instructor: Child Drama Workshops staff Your child’s fun-filled week at camp will include theatre games, creative movement, story dramatization, improvisational role playing, and much more. The week will conclude with the creative production of an original play — complete with professional direction, choreography, and makeup. MOCK TRIAL (maximum 14 participants) When: August 6 – 10 Age level: Grades 6 – 8 Time: 9:00 a.m. – noon and 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Cost: $275 Instructor: Mr. Kevin McDonald, Summer at Independence Director and Middle School English Teacher Public speaking, acting, writing, problem solving, teamwork, and debate. These are only some of the skills students will learn while participating in Mock Trial. The Mock Trial Camp will take rising sixth through eighth graders step-by-step through the process of preparing a real court case from the opening statements to the closing arguments. In our half-day camp, you’ll create erupting foam monsters, conduct amazing air pressure experiments, dig for hidden treasures, investigate the science of illusions, and build spectroscopes to view the spectrum of different types of light. Stay for the full day and we’ll reveal many mysteries of science as we investigate creepy creatures, learn troll tricks, capture a rainbow in a bottle, make instant snow, mix up glowing slime, and conduct lab tests on mystery substances. Stay for the full day and build your own motorized robot, use chromatography to separate the colors in candy, mix up some crazy chemical reactions, build an electric game, investigate the effects of air pressure, and compete in a tall tower engineering competition!

This hands-on program seeks to raise awareness about marine environments and stimulate an interest in the sciences through a variety of fun and engaging activities, such as snorkeling, salt marsh exploration, beach and island ecology, and ocean life studies. This camp also includes visits to a local aquarium, wildlife refuges, and of course…the beach! He has 15 years of coaching and playing experience at the collegiate level and 21 years of baseball camp experience, working camps at University of Delaware, Delaware State University, University of Maryland, Cecil College, and St. Mark’s High School. During his college coaching career, he coached three Conference Players of the Year and 10 players who have gone on to professional baseball.
