Our Day Camp is based on a summer theme that we incorporate into each week of camp and many of our planned activities. Our camp will provide children an enriching, fun, and exceptional day. For our older campers, activities include team building and team challenges, arts and crafts, sports and games, drama and film making, science, outdoor exploration, archery, tennis, a weekly field trip, and recreational swimming once a week. Our campers have plenty of opportunities to discover new talents, try new activities, and gain independence while building lasting friendships and fabulous memories.
Our Tot Camp brings the Day Camp experience to our youngest campers, age 3 through kindergarten. Incorporating splash pool time, music and movement, imaginative play, and science/outdoor exploration, Tot Camp is a great way to build friendships, memories, and independence in a fun, safe environment! Campers must be potty-trained.
H Indy Exploratorium H COOKING IN THE KITCHEN WITH MRS. V (maximum 20 participants) When: June 17-21 Grade Level: ECI (age 3)-Grade 1 Time: 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Cost: $255 Instructor: Mrs. Ann Veasey, Independence Substitute Teacher Cooking isn’t just for grownups! These campers will have a fun-packed week of cooking and learning new things in the kitchen. Campers will create healthy snacks, plus have fun making aprons and their very own cookbook. The best part? Campers get to enjoy the snacks they make every day! Campers must be potty-trained. CHESS CAMP When: June 24-28 and/or July 15-19 Grade Level: Grades 2-8 Time: 1:00-4:00 p.m. Cost: $230 Instructor: Mr. Gregory Rogers, founder and coach of Chess Masters of DE Chess Masters of DE has been teaching chess in schools since 2008. It was founded in Pope John Paul II School by Coach Gregory Rogers. Since then, the club has expanded to several schools in New Castle County and Pennsylvania. Coach Greg understands how chess can assist the youth to make good choices in and out of the classroom. His approach to teaching is always patience with dedication and commitment. Note: Campers may attend one or both weeks.
BACKYARD SUMMER GAMES (maximum 20 participants) When: July 8-12 Grade Level: Grades 5-8 Time: 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Cost: $230 Instructor: Mr. Dan Kitching, Independence Director of Bands Come for a week of fun in the sun at a relaxed pace, as you’re shown the ins and outs of whiffle ball, kickball, and other light outdoor sporting activities. Enjoy both friendly competition and camaraderie with your peers. UNDER THE SEA (maximum 20 participants) When: July 8-12 Grade Level: ECI (age 3)-Grade 1 Time: 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Cost: $255 Instructor: Mrs. Laura Fallon, Independence World Language Teacher Fish, Turtles, and Sharks — Oh my! Does your child love the ocean? If so, this is the perfect camp! Campers will learn about all kinds of animals in the ocean and even create their own aquarium to bring home. Each day, they will read and sing about, create, and celebrate all things associated with the ocean. There’s no doubt that this camp will be a whale of a good time! Campers must be potty-trained. GATHER AROUND THE CAMPFIRE When: July 15-19 Grade Level: ECI (age 3)-Grade 3 Time: 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Cost: $255 Instructor: Miss McKenzie Walsh, Independence Extended Day Staff Come on over and gather around the campfire for a fun-filled week of camping. Bring your band or orchestra instrument and come learn to play iconic music from great movies and television shows! You will even get the chance to record yourself playing and sync your performance up to an actual clip from a famous film. Campers must play a band or orchestra instrument.
Calling all explorers! Do you like adventure? Do you want to discover hidden treasure? Then let your imagination set sail during this fun-filled camp! Create your own ship to compete in a STEM challenge, explore which treasures sink and float, and follow a treasure map to discover hidden loot! You will sing songs, read stories, and complete crafts as you think like an explorer. Don’t forget your swimsuit — you may be asked to walk the plank! Campers must be potty-trained.
SAILING — NERYC (maximum 10 participants) When: July 15-18 and July 22-25 (no Friday lessons) Grade Level: Grades 3-8 Time: 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Cost: $550 Learn to sail with U.S. Sailing-certified instructors in a safe environment. Campers will be provided transportation by van to North East River Yacht Club in North East, MD, for this unique experience. No previous sailing experience is required. Whether you are a beginner, intermediate, or advanced sailor, you will build the skills to navigate a sailboat and advance to higher levels. Don’t forget to pack your lunch, since you will be out on the water. Sailors must attend both weeks. Day Camp is available for Fridays, if needed. DIGGING FOR TREASURE @ INDY When: July 22-26 Grade Level: Grades 6-8 Time: 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Cost: $255 Instructor: Ms. Tina Palmer, Independence Social Studies Teacher Are you a future Indiana Jones? Join us on an archaeological adventure as we dig up the past right here at Indy. Be part of a team that will find, sort, catalog, and research artifacts. Who knows what we will discover?

ESCAPE THE ROOM When: August 5-9 Grade Level: Grades 4-6 Time: 1:00-4:00 p.m. Cost: $255 Instructor: Miss Sarah Gilmore, Summer at Independence Assistant Director and Fourth-Grade Teacher Time is of the essence, and collaboration is key. Campers will work in teams to sort through a series of challenges, solve puzzles, and unlock clues. Each day, new and exciting themes will be presented, and the week will include a field trip to a local “Escape Room.” Join us for a week to unlock the mystery and see if you can escape the room. INTRO CARD TOURNAMENT When: August 5-9 Grade Level: Grades 2-8 Time: 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Cost: $255 Instructor: Miss McKenzie Walsh, Independence Extended Day Staff This fun-filled week will not only teach your child the game Magic: The Gathering, but it will also include a tournament just for children. Learn a new game or continue playing the game you have been playing for years. All week, there will be opportunities to earn fun prizes. GHOST HUNTING CAMP When: August 12-16 Grade Level: Grades 5-8 Time: 1:00-4:00 p.m. Cost: $255 Instructor: Mr. Kevin McDonald, Summer at Independence Director and Middle School English Teacher Let’s get metaphysical! Ghost Hunting Camp will take campers to some of the (supposedly) most haunted places in Delaware. First, we will research the stories behind these spooky places. Once there, we will observe and record any signs of our friends from the “other side.” Back at Indy, we will review our results and publish our findings. We might not prove or disprove anything, but it will be a lot of fun! WHO DONE IT? When: August 12-16 Grade Level: Grades 1-5 Time: 1:00-4:00 p.m. Cost: $255 Instructor: Miss McKenzie Walsh, Independence Extended Day Staff Calling all detectives! We have a mystery to solve, and we must find out “who done it” by working together all week analyzing clues. This team-building camp will teach our students how to work together, become leaders, and to think critically all while having a blast.
H Visual and Performing H Arts Camps JUST DANCE! When: June 17-21 Grade Level: Grades 1-8 Time: 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Cost: $300 Instructor: Miss Emily Rufo, Owner of Radiance Dance Studio Each day, we will focus on a different style of dance. We will learn a brief history, practice the style, learn a dance, and create a costume or prop to go with it. On our last day, we will be showing off all the dances we have learned in a small performance. This camp is a fun way to try different styles of dance! INDY ROCK CAMP When: June 24-28 Grade Level: Grades 6-8 Time: 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Cost: $255 Instructor: Mr. Daniel Kitching, Independence Director of Bands Get ready to rock! Campers will learn to play basic guitar, bass guitar, keyboard, and drums to classic rock songs, then show off their skills on stage at the end of the week. Instruments will be available, but campers are encouraged to bring their own guitars or bass if they own them. No prior musical experience necessary.

MUSIC AND STORIES (maximum 10 participants) When: June 24-28 Grade Level: ECI (age 3)-K Time: 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Cost: $255 Instructor: Mrs. Banu Fields, Independence Strings Instructor Every story should have its own song, and that’s what this camp is all about! We will read stories with a wide range of themes and learn songs to accompany them. Campers will play percussion instruments, move with the music, and talk about each character in our stories. Join us for a week of music-making! Campers must be potty-trained. MOCK TRIAL (maximum 14 participants) When: July 8-12 Grade Level: Grades 6-8 Time: 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Cost: $280 Instructor: Mr. Kevin McDonald, Summer at Independence Director and Middle School English Teacher Public speaking, acting, writing, problem solving, teamwork, and debate. These are only some of the skills students will learn while participating in Mock Trial. The Mock Trial Camp will take rising sixth through eighth graders step-by-step through the process of preparing a real court case from the opening statements to the closing arguments. Campers will learn vital skills to help them express themselves effectively and to work independently to accomplish their goals. This camp is ideal for students who are interested in being part of the very competitive high school Mock Trial league, as well as those who enjoy acting and debating and want to improve their public speaking skills. A live mock trial will be held on the final day of camp!

MY FIRST CAMP WITH STRINGS When: July 15-19 Grade Level: Grades 1-4 Time: 1:00-4:00 p.m. Cost: $255 Instructor: Mrs. Banu Fields, Independence Strings Instructor Come and get to know your favorite member of the strings family this summer! A violin, a viola, or maybe a cello! If you are a beginner, this week will be a great time to learn how to play a strings instrument. If you already know how to play, then polish off your technique and learn new music. Students are expected to bring their own instruments to class. BEGINNING ACTING — CHILD DRAMA WORKSHOPS When: July 22-26 Grade Level: Grades 2-5 Time: 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Cost: $450 Instructor: Child Drama Workshops Your child’s exciting week at camp will include theatre games, improvisation, acting techniques, monologues, creative movement, character building, and audition techniques. The week will conclude with the creative production of an original play — complete with professional direction, choreography, and makeup. WHAT TO DO WITH SIX STRINGS When: July 22-26 Grade Level: Grades 5-8 Time: 1:00-4:00 p.m. Cost: $255 Instructor: Mrs. Banu Fields, Independence Strings Instructor Would you like to be a one-man band or accompany your friends while singing? Then you need to come to this camp! Join us for a week of exploring the guitar! Learn to play chords, play rhythm guitar, and read music! Campers will need to bring their own acoustic guitars.

ADVENTURE WEEK III When: August 5-9 Cost: $500 (maximum 20 participants per week) Grade Level: Grades 4-8 Time: 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Instructor: Mrs. Heather Horsey, Independence Athletic Director Each day, rising fourth- through eighth-grade campers will embark on a new and exciting journey by leaving campus and heading out on field trips. Campers should come prepared for the scheduled activities. Details on each week will be announced as the camp approaches. Campers should bring their adventurous spirit and plan to have lots of fun! Due to high demand, campers are limited to one session of Adventure Week. Please note the reduced rate applied to Week II from July 1-3. This is due to the closure of our facility on Thursday, July 4 and Friday, July 5 in observance of Independence Day.

H STEM Camps H JUNIOR ROBOTICS When: June 24-28 Grade Level: Grades 1-4 Time: 1:00-4:00 p.m. Cost: $255 Instructor: Miss Sarah Gilmore, Summer at Independence Assistant Director and Fourth-Grade Teacher This camp is designed to develop the naturally curious and innovative minds of young children. While engaging in hands-on challenges, your child will gain experience in engineering, technology, and coding. We’ll spend time working with snap circuits, LEGOS, including LEGO WEDO 2.0, LittleBits, Cubetto, and more! No experience necessary.

SCIENCE EXPLORERS: TAKE A DIVE (maximum 23 participants) When: July 8-12 Grade Level: Grades 2-7 Time: 9:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m. or 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. or 12:30-3:30 p.m. Cost: $475 (full day) or $310 (half day) Instructor: Science Explorers staff Dive into the world of marine biology and oceanography! In our morning day camp, you’ll dissect a real shark, participate in a fisherman’s challenge, examine the anatomy of a fish and learn the ancient technique of gyotaku or “fish rubbing,” learn to survive at sea with a homemade solar still, create a kelp forest, and make your own submarine. Stay for the full-day camp and come face-to-face with some unique sea creatures! You’ll complete a squid dissection, bring to life genuine Triassic Triops, conduct a whale adaptations lab, and examine many weird wonders that live under the sea!

Hey there, future Science Explorers, do we have the camp for you! Join our team of curious tiny techs as we explore a new theme each day. We will create an edible ocean, experiment with a “magic” magnet bottle, investigate butterflies, discover how birds adapt to their environments, and make colorful sidewalk chalk! Children are never too young to be scientists! Campers must be potty-trained.

OCEANOGRAPHY (maximum 20 participants) When: July 29-August 2 Grade Level: Grades 5-8 Time: 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Cost: $430 Instructor: Mrs. Heather Watt, Independence Lower School Science Teacher Oceanography Camp is designed to emphasize environmental discovery and exploration. This camp is offered to students who are curious about the ocean and the world around them. This hands-on program seeks to raise awareness about marine environments and stimulate an interest in the sciences through a variety of fun and engaging activities such as snorkeling, salt marsh exploration, beach and island ecology, and ocean life studies. This camp also includes visits to a local aquarium, wildlife refuges, and of course…the beach!

SCIENCE EXPLORERS: SLIME OF MY LIFE (maximum 23 participants) When: July 29-August 2 Grade Level: Grades 2-7 Time: 9:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m. or 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. or 12:30-3:30 p.m. Cost: $475 (full day) or $310 (half day) Instructor: Science Explorers staff We’ve taken our after-school club programs from 2018-19 and turned them into a fun-filled, week-long camp that features a new slime every day, in addition to exploring an array of amazing science! In the half-day morning camp, we will make chalkboard slime and allnew color changing slime and magnetic slime! We’ll also build inventions like catapults, discover how electricity and circuits work by making conductive dough, and explore biology as we extract DNA from a banana and dissect an owl pellet. Stay for the full day and we’ll examine anatomy as we make a model lung and observe a real sheep heart, continue our exploration of circuits as we send messages via Morse code and build a metal detector to test objects to see if they are conductors or insulators, and explore wonders of the Earth as we erupt a volcano and experiment with pollination.

Ooey, gooey, smooshy, slimy fun! This camp lets children make a mess…on purpose! During this hands-on, messy camp, campers will learn how to make their own slime and goop from ingredients found in the home (with supervision, of course). Dress for the mess. We will even create a few messy snacks to eat during camp. Campers must be potty-trained.
H Academic Camps H YOUNG CRITICS (maximum 10 participants) When: June 24-28 Grade Level: Grades 5-8 Time: 1:00-4:00 p.m. Cost: $230 Instructor: Mr. Kevin McDonald, Summer at Independence Director and Middle School English Teacher Have you ever wished you could tell everyone exactly what you think of the latest fad? Have you ever left a movie and found yourself unable to stop talking about it? At Young Critics Camp, your opinion matters! Campers will experience the entire journalistic process as they report on movies, restaurants, and a few other events that lend themselves to spreading the word. Campers will be guided through both written and onscreen reviews. Laptops or other devices used for word processing are encouraged! GRAMMAR CLINIC When: August 12-15 Grade Level: Grades 5-8 Time: 9:00-11:00 a.m. Cost: $180 Instructor: Independence English Department What’s summer without grammar? We thoroughly explore the eight parts of speech, the foundation of all grammar study. Students become more familiar with the functions of words and how they work together within a sentence. 14
H Sports Camps H BOYS’ LACROSSE When: June 17-20 (no Friday, June 21) Grade Level: Grades 3-8 Time: 1:00-4:00 p.m. Cost: $165 Instructor: Mr. Jason Motta, Independence Boys’ Lacrosse Coach and Athletic Director The camp focuses on skill development and will include scrimmages, contests, fun games, and activities. Mr. Motta, the camp’s instructor, is a former Major League Lacrosse player and former University of Delaware assistant coach, as well as co-founder of Team 302 Lacrosse, an elite program for players in grades 2-11. Note: Boys’ Lacrosse requires full equipment. This camp does not run on Friday, June 21, so if you need coverage on that day, you will need to register for one day of Day Camp that week. Fundamentals of hitting, fielding, catching, pitching, and base running will be covered in this camp. Mr. August just completed his seventh season as head baseball coach at Independence. He has 17 years of coaching and playing experience at the collegiate level and 21 years of baseball camp experience, including working camps at University of Delaware, Delaware State University, and University of Maryland. During his college coaching career, he guided 10 players who have gone on to pro baseball.
Take part in some field hockey fun this summer! Mrs. Walch is a USA Field Hockey Level 1 Certified Coach and First State Fifth- and Sixth-Grade Recreational Coach in 2016-17. The camp will be focused on basic skill sets and may vary per age. All players must have shin guards, a mouth guard, and a field hockey stick. Facemasks recommended for grades 5-8. His prior basketball coaching experience includes a stint as an assistant at his alma mater, St. Mark’s High School. Fundamental skills that will be addressed at this camp include shooting, dribbling, rebounding, and defense. One-on-one, three-on-three, and five-on-five drills will also be included in this camp, which will involve guest speakers throughout the week.

Coach Shockley just completed her fourth season as head girls’ basketball coach at Independence. She has coached all age levels in the CYM league, as well as the YMCA league, over the last 25 years. She believes that players need to be taught the fundamentals of the game, including shooting, dribbling, rebounding, and defense. This fun-filled week will be jam packed with instruction and a variety of drills to improve each player’s confidence and love of basketball.
Heather Watt played collegiate tennis at Salisbury University, where she was named to the doubles All-CAC team. After five seasons as assistant coach at Independence, Mrs. Watt is preparing for her seventh season as head coach of an Independence tennis program that ranks among the best in Delaware. She has run tennis camps at Independence for the last 11 years.
