My journey has required being tough and resilient especially being a black woman in business. The unconscious bias that I face on a daily basis requires a thick skin. The challenge is finding the safe spaces that allow for me to be vulnerable with others who can relate to the experience. We need to fill the gap and create safe spaces for women who are on their journey to success to feel supportive and uplifted.

My Christian practice of prayer and meditation are the ways I maintain my faith and keep my energy high. I try to pause during the day to reflect on what is happening and tapping into my breathing. I close each day with Bible reading and prayer.

Malcolm Gladwell is one of my favorite authors, and I keep rereading David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits, and the Art of Battling Giants. I love this book because my brand is small but mighty, and reading about how the underdog can make it is inspiring.

9. How do you deal with set-backs?

I am not afraid to cry when I am frustrated or experience a huge disappointment. After the tears, I take a step back and ask myself what am I supposed to learn? Sometimes the lesson is obvious and other times it takes deeper reflection and time.

Either way I no longer fear setbacks. I realize they are a part of the journey and can help me become better.

3 Proven Ways to Honor Your Needs First

– Lily Tomlin Take time to reflect on where you are and if it’s in alignment with where you want to be. Some questions you can journal about or ask yourself include: 1. What are my 2018 highs and lows so far? Taking time to really think about this is important so you can move forward with new energy.

2018 is half-over. How are you doing on the goals and intentions you set this year? Did something in ‘life’ happen that required you to redirect your focus and energy? Are you taking time to rest and relax? Perhaps your support system keeps sharing shiny objects because they didn’t get the memo about you stepping deeper into your light this year.

As women, we tend to put other people and their priorities first. In this article, I’m sharing 3 proven ways to honor your needs first so that you can feel unlimited and empowered to stay the course (or change course).

2. What HABITS, learning, and actions do I need to integrate to feel the way I want to feel? Habits are key to success. What habits are serving you well and which ones aren’t? Maybe you watched more news/ tv than you wanted, or you didn’t practice self-care. What do you need to learn to achieve what you want? How do you want to feel on December 31st, 2018?

Think about your year in terms of how you want to consistently feel.

Sometimes, we need to reflect, rest, and reassess life and business. When I’m stressed out, these three things help me honor and respect my needs and contribute to my success.

2 The Second Way to Honor Your Needs:

Rest

“Sometimes, we need to slow down in order to speed up.” ~Tandy Elisala There are people out there that tell you to hustle and sleep later in life. There are a few challenges with this approach. First, the number one thing that lets you know you are out of alignment is your body. To ensure you are working, living, and being in alignment, slow down and listen to your body! As a 4-time cancer thriver, I can tell you that getting enough rest is critical to your well-being.

Second, when you are staying busy with TV, shopping, worrying, rabbit holes, etc. you might miss the creative and divine downloads meant for you. When your mind and body are fully rested, it’s easier to receive the messages that are for your highest good.

Here are two ways I recommend integrating more rest into your life: 1.

Breathing is a fabulous stress reliever and sleep aide. Besides needing oxygen to live, breathing can help you gain perspective, keep you from impulse decisions and can reduce your blood pressure.

Here’s a quick breathing exercise: Take 5 deep breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth. Taking at least five deep breaths this way will help and give you all the benefits mentioned above. A great visual to release negative energy and allow more positive energy in is to imagine or visualize plus signs (+) as you breathe in and pretend or visualize there are minus signs (-) as you exhale.

Plan, Prioritize, and Flow Your Way to a Relaxing Summer.

by Dr. Rachel MK Headley I’m an all-out, all-the-time kind of woman. Even when I’m relaxing, most people think I’m busy – I’m baking or refinishing furniture or some such.

Frankly, when my daughter is in school (and in after school care), it gives me time to get the work done I need to do. As an entrepreneur, there is always more to do, but I tend to work less in the dark of the winter months.

Of course, the trouble is that there is still all that “real” work waiting to be done. How do I find time to fit it all in?

Plan the projects: In the depths of winter, I decide just what projects need tackling (what I can afford in time and money). I select and schedule the needed professionals. I set aside the funds. If I do this when it’s dark and cold outside, it gives me a chance to dream about summer, and it frees up a lot of my time once the season gets underway.

Prioritize the work: First, I keep in mind the front burner activities: the Certification we are rolling out, the book due for release in a few months, current client delivery, lead generation, and so forth. Nice to haves, like updating the website, are put off or delegated.

Second, I rearrange my schedule. I am a morning person, inasmuch as I enjoy getting up when the sun is up. In the summer, I get up regularly at 5:00a. I break at 6:30 when my daughter gets up, and I have her off to summer camp by 7:30. Then, the team start showing up at the office, we have our coffee talk, then we’re getting everything knocked out for the day. This leaves time for a round of golf or a motorcycle ride in the afternoons.

Third, I delegate. I mentioned this before, but it bears repeating. We have a writer to draft our book. We have a graphic designer on staff. We use a web service for our site. I have no business trying to wade through stuff for hours when I can pay a professional to do it correctly in a few minutes.

Flow with the Season: Summer is a mindset. It’s a time of strange work hours, surprise guests, opportunities for fun with my daughter, beautiful days when you just can’t stand to be inside.

My key to staying sane is just to flow with it. Summer is for experiences, and sitting on the porch, and cold drinks, and blooming trees, and picking wild raspberries, and travel, and a million other things that make life a joy to live.

One way I keep chill about work is to use an old throwback technique – a notebook. That’s right. A pen and paper. Or a pencil will work.

I keep a notebook in my purse and drag it around with me wherever I go. That way, if we’re on the 7th green or on break at the pool, I can make notes if something comes to me, or reminders, or items to double-check when I get back to the office, or I can jot out the outline of an article or book chapter. We already spend a lot of time in front of screens (and indoors). Using a notebook allows us to leave the phone off while enjoying our summer activities.

Now, go plan, prioritize, and flow your way to a blissful summer. And don’t forget the notebook!

There is much we can learn from this ancient centuries old practice to promote a more balanced and harmonious sense of well-being and abundance.

What is Feng Shui?

Known as the “art of placement” feng shui dates back to several thousand years ago in China and comes from Chinese astronomy from the time of Neolithic China. Some techniques are more recent from the Han, the Tang, the Song and the Ming Dynasty periods.

Various aspects were taken into consideration including locations of water, mountains, rivers and roads. Even the burial grounds where auspiciously chosen using feng shui practices. Today, around the world Interior designers, architects, even realty agents utilize feng shui to achieve a balance within the home/office environment that is conducive to security, safety, prosperity and overall feelings of well-being for the occupants. It’s common today to have a home staged with Feng Shui in mind. A feng shui’d home feels more welcoming and balanced.

Considered a “mirror”, feng shui can help us determine the health of our environment by what is going on in our lives. For instance, someone whose home is filled with clutter and is poorly maintained might find themselves anxious frequently, unsettled, prone to poor health. Interestingly, clearing clutter and repairing and fixing the environs tends to help the occupants lessen or remove anxiety and even improve health because the environment invites them to feel more motivated to take better care.

Feng Shui in Brief!

There are a number of feng shui schools just as there are many who practice a variance of two or more feng shui teachings. For example, I have married the Form teachings (utilizing rivers/water/ landscapes) with Black Sect (which uses the compass known as a Bagua (Bagwah) and the five elements of energy - wind, water, fire, wood, metal and air) together with my own intuitive sense of what “feels” right to me. I’ve used this method of feng shui for the past 20 years and in each of the last five homes we’ve lived. The difference has been remarkable.

Begin by Decluttering Each section of the Bagua deals with an area of life and each area also includes one of the five energy elements. But, before you begin to feng shui (best place furnishings/items technique) to improve life areas such as finances, relationships, career, etc., you must first begin with an uncluttered canvas. The only way to do that is to clear the clutter!

First, evaluate where you are in life right now. Maybe you aren’t yet where you want to be in your career or business, or there’s knowledge you wish to pursue.

Perhaps finances are an issue. No matter where you are at the moment, the key to moving forward is being willing to do so and if your environment isn’t mirroring the level of positive, vibrant, abundance that you know you deserve, the simplest place to begin is by clearing what you no longer need.

Take time over the next few weeks to begin clearing any clutter. Toss anything broken, repair any damages, paint any tired walls. Don’t hold onto dried or dead flowers/plants. Remove any trash or things you’ve not used in ages. Find a place for everything, keep nothing you don’t enjoy.

Understanding Your

“Next” Level

There are several conversations in the self-help/coaching world about stepping into your next level. Yet, very few leaders are telling you exactly what those levels are and what happens during and along the way. Maybe it’s the psychotherapist and the organizational psychologist in me that thinks how many more people would be powerfully stepping into their “next level” if they clearly understood what it meant and a road map, of sorts, was given to them along the way. So, here’s my quick, down and dirt explanation to help you know where you are and where you can go.

Your Next Level Phases First, let’s start by helping you understand that any time you are going through some type of internal and external challenge(s), more than likely there is an evolution or growth spurt needing to take place within your body, soul (mind, will, and emotions), and spirit. In order words, your spiritual/higher self may be trying to get your attention in showing you that there is something out of balance or alignment with your divine calling, purpose, and behavior and now is the perfect time to address it.

In many ways, these challenges can be blessings in disguise giving us powerful signs that something in you is ready to shift or be released in order to allow in more of your deeper goals, dreams, and desires. Challenges are beautiful indicators that a deeper work of healing and transformation is needed in order to create space for more of UW { 32

your higher self to be seen, heard, felt, and experienced. Remember, your higher self is whole and complete where nothing is missing or broken.

We’re Tested In Three Areas of Life As a psychologist, and without going into too many details now, I have noticed that most personal and business challenges fall under three categories:

1. Who we are – our sense of self

a. This has everything to do with what you believe, think, and feel about yourself

b. Your sense of having value, worth, and importance in who you are (not what you do)

2. What we desire – our purpose and calling

a. Your desire can be a powerful indicator of your higher calling and purpose (too

many ignore their desires for free of judgment)

b.

Your desire is often birthed out of your challenges, struggles, and pain

3. What we are willing to do – our commitment and follow through

a. Your commitment and follow through is directly connected to your habits and disciplines

Understanding Your Next Level To help you better understand what it means to step into your next level, here is a brief explanation of three next level phases:

1. Experiential Level

2. Transcendence Level

3. Supernatural Level

Experiential Level We must start by saying that we are spiritual beings in a human body having human experiences often distracting us from our spiritual truth. That said, the experiential level is directly connected to our human experiences controlled and influenced by our conscious brain, which is very active but not the most powerful.

At this level, your conscious brain is mostly focusing on all things logical or rational and this includes trusting more in your limited beliefs more so than in having faith in God, Source, Spirit or yourself. After all, your conscious brain (mind) thinks it has real “facts” supporting what it believes based on what you have experienced. This is why so many of us stay focused on merely surviving, having your basic needs met, hiding, playing it safe, experiencing and expressing only our basic emotions and moods such as lack, worry, fear, anxiety, doubt, judgment, criticism, and depression. Within this level are three development challenges also taking place – existence (again merely surviving), awareness (becoming more aware of our environment), and conformity (following the rules set by our family and society to influence who we are and what we do or don’t do).

Transcendence Level In the transcendence level, we are exceeding the usual limits of our existence and experiences.

Meaning, at this level we begin to awaken and remember that we truly are spiritual beings with profound amounts of power to help us live a richer, more abundant, and unlimited lives.

1. Acknowledge where you are in this very moment of your personal life and business

a. If you need to forgive yourself or others do so

b. Release judgement

c. Surrender and stay in gratitude

(surrendering, by the way, IS the highest

form of gratitude) 2. Get a vision of your next level self and define her 3. Get a burning desire for who you ARE and what you want 4. Ask for help and accountability (you were not created to be, do, and live alone)

a. Success happens in relationship and community 5. Express yourself

a. Make a plan on how you are doing to

allow your higher self to be fully realized

and expressed

b. Be creative 6. Never give up

a. Call upon your inner circle to help you

keep moving forward

Here, we begin desiring to express more of our higher self. We are wanting to be fully seen, heard, touched, and experienced for who we are without fear of being rejected, abandoned, or judged. This is where our subconscious mind is more active or our alpha brain is active being forth more insight, intuition, visualization, imagination, and passion.

The negative side to this level is we also begin to remember more of our childhood pains, and disappointments. At this stage, we begin wanting to make a bigger impact for ourselves, family, and others. Without having the right tools in place, support system, and a way to keep moving forward, Finally, as long as you’re alive, your higher self we can get stuck and stay stuck for years. will continually seek to be fully realized within you and out in the world. Find a community, a coach or mentor, who will help you by holding space and energy for your highest and greatest self. The First, let’s understand what supernatural is. Supernatural Level

At this level, we begin to acknowledge and fully To Your Next Level, accept our divinity. We accept our co-creative powers with God and the Universe. Manifestation becomes easier at this level because we KNOW who we are, what we are called to do while also fully accepting our gifts, talents, skills and abilities. It is also here that we feel a global calling and recognize that we can’t do it alone. Here we must call in our inner circle and team in order to be and do more.

Although there is so much more to be said about each level, hopefully there is enough here to give you insight into where you are and maybe even where you’re going.

Cherish Your Spirit

So this time of year, is even more special for that reason. I throw myself into things that truly bring me joy, the things that light up my world and allows me to just be me in all my vulnerability and authentic. Reset Your Mind for A little while ago I was in the pediatrics ward of a Children’s Hospital supporting a friend.

Things were pretty scary for a bit there, but eventually we felt that her son was out of the woods, and we could all relax a bit. At that point I started to notice the children around us. On the other side of the curtain in the hospital bed next to ours was a very tiny baby named Jack. He was all bundled up and hooked up to a million monitors. As I looked at him his eyes were wide open and alert, and he sucked his pacifier frantically.

And in that moment I was struck by the fact that no family had come to visit him at all. He was there, in that big sterile place all alone.

My eyes welled up with tears. My mind was screaming “Where are his parents?” And in my mind I created a story about Jack. Why he was all alone, how he was not getting any love, how could nobody care about him? I spent an hour next to his bed humming and speaking softly to him.

I went home that night almost beside myself with a feeling of loss and abandonment for little Jack. The next morning I rushed back to the hospital. When I got to the room a young woman and her little 3 year old son were playing with tiny Jack. I was overwhelmed with relief and went over to say hello. It turns out the mom was a single mother who had to go to work in order to keep her medical coverage to give her baby a chance at life.

She said to me with deep sadness in her eyes and a shaky voice “It breaks my heart that I can’t be with him, but he is safe as long as I work.”

Why hadn’t that occurred to me? In my mind I had immediately jumped to the conclusion

that the baby was all alone. But in fact, his mother was making huge sacrifices so he could be taken care of. It was her deep love for him that kept her going through all of this.

Jack was loved with such intensity his Mom was willing to do whatever it took for his well-being. This story was heart wrenching, but after realizing what was really happening my feelings of outrage were replaced with feelings of compassion.

I was reminded in that moment that we all make up stories in our minds about what is going on around us. We choose whether that story is positive or negative. Many times, we don’t ever get to find out if the story we created is true. We go through life believing

everything we create in our own minds is truth.

But the only truth is that we never know the truth. All we know is what we create in our minds based on our own filters and beliefs.

Reset Your Life by

Opening Your Heart

What in the world does it mean to reset your life? Today, I take it to mean so many things: take a pause, try new experiences, go in a different direction, seek peace, grow in awareness, become excited by the challenge, get curious...

If someone had told me any of those things during the 30 years I was an angry, bitter person, it would have set me off. Not today.

Today, I welcome each of those things, and live in a state of gratitude and positivity.

How about you? Is your heart open to looking at the positive? Or, are you stuck in a story, going round and round with resentment,

stress, or maybe even depression? If this is you, there is a way to reset you life, to give it a jump-start, so you can begin to feel more peace and freedom from your resentment.

In deciding what image to use for this article, my intuition said Openness of Heart. This took me back to the moment I realized that my passion for photographing wrought iron gates had great meaning. To me, the gates represented my heart, closed from life’s experiences, pains, disappointments, etc. This realization was the moment my life began to change and I began to slowly open my heart.

I hadn’t even known it was closed.

There are five stages you go through to gain more peace and freedom in your life.

They are described below.

Stage One - Awareness

Stage Four - Self-appraisal

The first thing that needs to occur is for you to have an awareness that your heart is closed, either fully or partially. For me, the revelation of awareness came after weeks and weeks of daily walks to photograph my gates, the gates that you see with my articles.

When I realized they represented my closed heart, that was the beginning of my awareness. If your heart is closed, start tuning into your awareness level. This is the beginning.

Doing a self-appraisal is the most liberating thing you can do for yourself. It furthers your feelings of being empowered. The appraisal begins by listing the kind and loving things you have done for others and for yourself recently.

Stage Two - Willingness Willingness is the key to everything. You must be willing to do the work, to look at yourself, to right your wrongs, and to open your heart. Become willing to let go of the need to be right, to have your own way, and to control others and situations. When you do these three things, your life immediately gets more peaceful.

Leaders Enroll Others

Every successful person says they would not be where they are today if it weren’t for the help of others.

When you share your dream, vision, or whatever you are comfortable calling it, with such passion and life within your words, you inspire anyone within earshot. They become enrolled in the journey of and can begin experiencing doors opening that one never even imagined were possible to them.

Let me share a glimpse of that from my book, The Spontaneous Journey.

In 2015 my BIG dream was to travel. Simply travel as much as possible with no particular plan in place. Nashville was one place on my bucket list that I knew I wanted to visit because of the food, music and startup ecosystem that was brewing strongly there for years. I set and achieved the goal of making it to Nashville, and while there attended quite a few networking events.

During one particular event, I met a woman who worked at a social enterprise. Social enterprise businesses are of particular interest to me so I asked if I could tour

the company’s headquarters (once again I ASKED; this will be talked more about in a later chapter!). Without hesitation she said “yes” and we scheduled a time for me to take a tour.

At the end of the tour, we were sitting at her desk and I saw a chart listing upcoming trips they were taking stakeholders and volunteers on. One of the destinations was Costa Rica, another place on my bucket list. I shared this with her along with my expertise in writing stories of community impact and consulting social enterprise business models. The next thing I knew, she enrolled me in my BIG dream of travelling. I was then invited to Costa Rica to cover the story of this particular trip. My BIG dream had the power to enroll others, whether for a season or a lifetime. In this particular instance, our paths crossed for a brief season; but, the impact lasted a lifetime.

Enrolling others is crucial to your success as a leader. You will never achieve greatness without enrolling others. True leaders understand that they cannot make it by themselves; it takes enrolling others. This can mean hiring them, asking for their mentorship, meeting with them occasionally for support and encouragement, asking outright for specific help and a plethora of other asks. Whatever the reason, you’ll become a better leader when you master learning how to enroll others in your journey.
