to Meet The Beach Boys?

By Brenna Eller Editor-In-Chief The Kansas State Fair had quite the variety of bands this year.

One such bad was The Beach Boys, who recently began their 2018 Now and Then tour in June and came to Hutchinson on Sept.

15.

Some of the Hutchinson Community College cheerleaders were called on stage to perform with the group to the song, “True to Your School” and had “Fun Fun Fun” doing it.

Lauren Musick, a HutchCC cheerleader from Hutchinson, was one of the girls who went up on stage.

Each of the three cheerleaders’ favorite Beach Boys songs: “Surfin’ USA” - Lauren Musick “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” - Brooke Holcomb “Good Vibrations” - Hannah Moore

“I was super excited to perform with the band, but the nerves got to me when I saw how big the crowd was,” said Musick.

Despite her nerves, Musick said, “The experience itself was one I will always remember.”

“It felt like a dream, because they are super famous, and I am a Beach Boys fan,” Holcomb said.

Out of all of the cheerleaders, Holcomb had the closest encounter with Bruce Johnston.

“The lead guitarist put his guitar on me and reached around and started playing while I had it on,” Holcomb said.

Not only did these girls meet them, but they also got to go backstage with The Beach Boys.

“Being backstage, they treated you like royalty,” Holcomb said.

Hannah Moore, McPherson, also enjoyed the encounter with The Beach Boys.

“I was super excited, and you actually couldn’t see many fans because of how bright the lights

were, so I feel like that took away a lot of the nervousness,” Moore said.

Moore said that there were about 10 HutchCC cheerleaders invited on stage. When asked about whether or not she was a fan of The Beach Boys, Moore said, “I had heard of them and recognized a lot of their songs.”

Feeling the mid-semester blues

Our view

As the beginning-ofschool jitters have calmed down and the reality of life is setting in, everyone is feeling the mid-semester blues.

We no longer feel the nerves of new in our stomachs and have become accustomed to our regular routine of college life.

Routines are comforting to some, but to most, comfort becomes boring.

Going to classes, going to work, and finding time to eat and sleep is becoming a habit that just keeps going on and on. It just feels like life is droning on forever.

But we’re all feeling it.

We all understand the long guttural sighs of exhaustion and the slow zzz’s of tiredness.

The excitement has vanished from our view and it’s not easy to keep moving forward.

And finally fall has arrived, but it’s just another

Yes, we do have breaks in between here and there.

There is Fall Break and Thanksgiving Break, but those still seem so far away.

Students and teachers alike are feeling this drag upon us. Yet we are all still working in what seems like an endless cycle of school.

But, don’t give up hope!

It may seem bad right now, but we promise it won’t last forever.

Fall Break is only 15 days away, and that’s counting weekends.

Plus, it is officially October which means beautiful fall landscapes, pumpkin patch adventures, and the lovely holiday of Halloween that has lots and lots of candy.

So don’t dare give up hope. Keep trudging through those routine classes because guess what?

Each day gone, is another day closer to the end of the semester.

#WhyIDidntReport needs to be heard This week, I was having a hard time deciding what my topic should be. Every idea that I had was bland.

But lo and behold, that a topic should fall in my lap from someone who’s supposed to set a good example.

The President of the United States tweeted out an angering tweet about sexual assault accusations against Supreme Court justice nominee Brett Kavanaugh. To sum up his tweet, it stated that if the accuser, Christine Ford, was really telling the truth, and that the situation was as bad as she said, that it would have been reported immediately.

Tabitha Barr that brings the hard core reality to the surface. #WhyIDidntReport is where women are sharing their saddening stories of why they didn’t report their situations of sexual assault. I started reading threads after threads of women’s experiences, and

I was heartbroken and angry. Multiple people are coming out with why they didn’t report it to the police, and why they shouldn’t be ridiculed for fear of coming forward.

One tweet stated, “It took me 40yrs to understand that I wasn’t at fault.”

Another went on to say, “I’d been conditioned to believe I had asked for it, and that a man’s pleasure is more important than my right to say no.”

These reports are so saddening to see because no woman should live in fear of rape, let alone be afraid of coming forward and telling the truth of what really happened.

It’s crazy to me that we live in a society that ignores the pleas of tragedy. I can’t wrap my head around it, because why would it be instinct for humans to think that a person is lying when they say they’ve been sexually assaulted?

The big question is why is someone, who is supposed to be a good example and an inspiration to the people, dismissing something he knows nothing about? As president, the person who holds this position, is there to better our country and help people. However, it doesn’t seem like he cares one bit about women’s rights and the experiences we have to share.

But this movement is another way for women and future generations to see what one person’s story can unlock.

For all of those who have been wronged, I want to let you know that you are not alone. Women all around the globe are coming forward with their stories and they are making headway in putting those wrongdoers away. I hope this movement keeps helping those who were too afraid to speak up. Victims deserve to be heard and are gaining headway day-byday.

“The Women’s March” on Twitter tweeted, “#WhyIDidntReport •

There are too many of these stories. • Too many of us have these stories. • Too many of us have never felt safe to share them.

And men like @realDonaldTrump are why.”

I couldn’t have said it better myself.

The #WhyIDidntReport is making an impact on a global scale. And hopefully one day, with strong and empowering women behind it, this hashtag won’t relate to as many as it does.

Quit this Fortnite garbage; try Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Fortnite Battle Royale has drawn a lot of attention over the past year, but there is a game that has gamers excited.

The name of the game is called “Call Of Duty: Black Ops 4.”

There is a game mode in Black Ops called “Blackout.”

It is similar to Fortnite but without the building aspect.

Black Ops recently had a private beta and in order for you to play it, you need to buy the game

The Hutchinson Collegian is the official student newspaper of Hutchinson Community College.

It is created by the Newspaper Production class each week during the academic year, except for when school is not in session, or during final exams.

Blackout has a total of 100-players but the company who made the game is called “Treyarch.”

Treyarch is wanting to increase the player count to at least 115-players, while Fortnite has 100.

Blackout has all the famous weapons, even back from Black Ops 1, 2 and 3. And the fans are as happy as ever.

If you played either of the games I had men-

tioned, Treyarch has taken the chance to put the maps that fans love into Blackout.

From firing range, Nuketown, and others as well.

They even put the mystery box in from zombies which will attract the undead.

So not only are you fighting other players, you are also fighting off the horde.

Blackout has three different levels of amor.

Level 3 is really rare to find and if you have it, then you’re a god and you can tank bullets.

Call Of Duty: Black Ops 4 is set to release in October 12, 2018.

If you enjoyed the series, then this game is for you.

So play this instead of playing Fortnite, which is for 12-year olds.

Ponytail posse: Yes, it’s a professional look This week, I polled my Facebook and Twitter followings to get their opinion on whether a ponytail is professional. Before we get to the results, let’s look at why I ask this, and a special circumstance that might sway the verdict another way.

Today’s topic came about because of one judge at state Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) STAR events competition this past April.

At that time, I had long hair and I kept it tied back into a ponytail.

For this competition, I participat-

ed in a mock interview and chose to interview for a YMCA Kidzone attendant position. A week or so later, my advisor and I are looking at the comments that I received from those judges and that’s when we discovered that comment.

I’m sorry. I, like several others, believe that a ponytail can be professional. To get an idea of what my friends, and followers, think about this issue. Twitter and Facebook were both polled, with the following results – Twitter, 13 votes, 8 percent “No”, 15 percent “Don’t care or don’t know”, 31

percent “Yes”, and at 46 percent, “Depends upon circumstances”.

Facebook results were: 22 Votes, 77 percent “Yes” (17 votes), and 23 percent No (five votes).

One commenter made a valid point – in the military, ponytails are not professional. According to military code, a servicemember’s hair is subject to specific guidelines. The United States Navy will allow females to wear their hair in a pony tail for PT (Physical Training), but this may vary between branches of the military.

I remember sitting on the floor at

Business Professionals of America Nationals, my last as a Secondary (High School) Division member, and discussing this with our advisor, chaperone and a friend. A fond memory of the time spent with that group. I went on to National FCCLA competition and received a gold medal (9th in the nation) for Job Interview Occupational. That felt good because I overcame that person’s opinion and continue rock my ponytail all day every day.

R.J. Mitte to speak at Dillon Lecture Series

The Dillon Lecture Series is an event held at the Hutchinson Sports Arena that brings inspirational people from all around the world.

On Oct. 2, R.J. Mitte will be speaking to Hutchinson Community College students and the community about his life experiences. Mitte is an actor who played on an award-winning show “Breaking Bad”.

The character he portrayed battles the same disorder that he does in real life, cerebral palsy. But Mitte doesn’t let that stop him from living his life and advocating with the platform he has.

Mitte shares his story to help others see that there’s more to a person than just what they want to share.

His main goal is to encourage everyone to leave their cozy room of comfort, and escape the comfort zone to see what life is really here

for.

“We have these tendencies to lock ourselves in boxes and hide ourselves as individuals,” Mitte said as he explained how people need to do something new and exciting to gain any semblance of happiness in life.

The quote “You don’t have to live vicariously through other people, you can live vicariously through yourself,” is crucial to a successful life.

Mitte has lived his life different from most people his age, but he said that each person’s life experiences are incomparable to anyone else’s, because each person is living their own life. Each person’s mentality is different, but are all apart of a whole community. People have the ability to vocalize what they’ve learned through their experiences and coming forward out into the spotlight can help anyone who is listening.

Mitte is working on is his partnership with fashion industries to make clothes more accessible.

“So many parts of the fashion industry believe, you should fit my clothes, my clothes should not fit you,” Mitte said.

Those with disabilities are fighting a struggle that comes easy to most of us.

They are wanting and needing clothes that are easy to get on and off. They want clothes that are comfortable and that can put on without help from someone else.

“A lot of people don’t understand the importance of of having the ability to put your own pants on or put your own shirt on,” Mitte said.

It’s important to see what needs to change and help those who don’t have a platform to express it from. It’s also not just for those with disabilities, because everyone wants to feel empowering in the clothes they wear. Mitte’s involvement helps those to

By Emily Fehrman Social Media Editor For those who are unaware, for the last four weeks, there has been a few students at Hutchinson Community College that partake in coordinating outfits.

Every Friday, a handful of Dan Smith’s engineering physics students collectively wear Hawaiian shirts.

What a way to make classes interesting.

Wyatt Krehbiel, Pretty Prairie sophomore, explained how this movement originally came about.

Krehbiel said that it had originally started off as a joke, but that it just escalated quickly. Soon the students had even got

Smith to join in on the fun. He then goes on to explain why they wear them: “A - Hawaiian shirts are awesome. B - We gotta start celebrating the weekend early,” he said.

As the weeks go by, they try to tell random people they meet around campus that every Friday is “Hawaiian Shirt Friday”, and that they need to partake. Krehbiel also jokes that it happens to be his “charismatic nature” that helps get more people to join.

One has to ask, does this have anything to do with Bill Lumbergh and the movie “Office Space”? Or just something they came up with on a whim?

Krehbiel said that he gets asked that a lot, but he has never even seen the movie.

They plan to continue wearing the shirts for the remainder of the first semester and possibly into the second.

When asked how he would feel if more people around campus started wearing Hawaiian shirts, Krehbiel said, “It would be absolutely awesome. I would love to be able to unite an entire college in the most ridiculous way possible.”

So dig out that old typical Hawaiian tourist shirt from high school spirit week, and dust that bad boy off before this next Friday so you too can enjoy the ridiculous fun these guys have.

How often do students visit Rimmer Learning Center?

By Jared Shuff Staff Writer Rimmer Learning Center is filled with all sorts of resources to help students with their academic needs. JFK Library, computer labs, tutoring, and free printing are a few things to name. However, do students really use these resources, and if they do, how often?

Brecken Wilkinson: I don’t usually go to the actual library, but I go there to print things and if a class gets released early I like to sit at the tables upstairs and get a little homework done.

Brad Ensz: I go to the library to do homework print off lab reports and give tours of the campus

Morgyn Geuy: Literally never, I have no reason to.

Amyah Malcom: Well, I work down [at JFK Library], so I’m usually there 10 hours a week.

We generally go to fast-food restaurants and sometimes have a coupon that will allow us to get a free medium order of fries, or a drink.

The McDonald’s app in the Google Play Store, which you can download for free, will then ask you to log in or register. You can either log in using Facebook or Google , whichever you prefer, and then once you have completed those steps, it will ask you for your location and help you find the nearest McDonald’s.

After that, you can place an order for your meal. For

this to work you would have to put your debit card or credit card information in, so when you go in, it has been paid for.

This app is extremely easy, and since McDonalds has the coupons in your phone, all you have to do is go in and show them what you want. They scan your phone, and you can get your free drink or $1 medium order of fries.

However, if you do care about nutrition, you can find it when you tap the top left, and a bar will slide down showing the home, order, deals, locations and nutrition. Once you click on it, the menu will show, and it will show how much calories are in the food.

By Amanda Carney Co-Sports Editor Sebastian Garcia, from Greer, South Carolina, is now the record holder for longest field goal in Hutchinson Community College football history.

Garcia set the school record with a 48-yard field goal in the third quarter against Fort Scott, Saturday, September 15 at Gowans Stadium during a Blue Dragon win, 61-21.

Garcia’s kicking and

football career was only started after a talk with his dad. Garcia’s first interest was soccer, until her talked with is dad, expressing his football interest. Garcia decided to try spring football his freshman year at Wade Hampton High School.

“I decided to try kicking and punting because I had a good leg in soccer and figured it could transfer over to football,” Garcia said.

Garcia developed into an outstanding kicker and punter throughout his high

school career, thanks to the help of his high school kicking coach Jim Hendricks, a University of Florida alumnus. Not only did his high school coach greatly influence Garcia, but so did some of the camps he participated in, Ray Guy and Chrissallor Kicking being a few.

Garcia not only holds the the record for longest field goal in Blue Dragon history, but he also holds the record for longest field goal in Wade Hampton history.

Garcia set a 52-yarder field goal while at Wade Hampton, to go with his 48-yard field goal at Hutchison Community College.

Garcia broke the record held by three Blue Dragon kickers. It was last tied in 2013 by Ryan Weese, when he made a 47-yarder at Butler.

Garcia remained cool and collected when attempting a record breaking field goal.

“I just went back to basics of kicking and struck the ball,” Garcia said.

Hutchinson coach Rion Rhoades recognizes what an outstanding individual and player Garcia is, on and off the field.

“Sebastian is not just a really good kicker, he’s a really good guy,” Rhoades said. “He is fun to be around. There is not a player on the field that cares more about their job than Sebastian, almost to a fault.

He also had 1.5 quarterback sacks.

The season: Wilkerson, who hails from Fort Smith, Ark. and played at Northside High, has gathered 14 total tackles, including six solo stops. His quarterback sacks have led to 17 lost yards for opponents. Blue Dragon soccer coach reaches landmark win

Hutchinson Community College head soccer coach Sammy Lane recently reached a milestone in his career.

Lane and the HutchCC women’s soccer team defeated Pratt Community College on Saturday 2-0, earning Lane his 200th win as Blue Dragons coach.

Lane, the only coach in team history, has worked hard over the years to create a name for the women’s soccer team, and his hard work is paying off.

For Lane, the best thing about reaching 200 wins was the messages he received.

“The wins mean an awful lot, but to get the messages from some of the girls was really touching,” Lane said.
