We stand by our stories

The Hutchinson Collegian stands by our previous newspaper regarding catcalling on campus. Catcalling has not only been an issue, but for many years it has gone under the rug with little to no action taken.

And though it is prevalent on pretty much all college campuses, Hutchinson Community College shouldn’t use that excuse to not do anything about the matter.

Some previous students who now attend four-year schools have come forward and stated that HutchCC’s campus is worse about catcalling, and that they feel safer on their campus (Fort Hays State University and Wichita State University were mentioned in public messages sent to us on Twitter).

One current HutchCC student said that she switched to online schooling because she felt it was safer.

Another message to us indicated a 14-year-old girl used to walk home from Hutchinson High School, but she switched routes due to her being catcalled while walking on HutchCC’s campus.

We are with the women being catcalled and harassed, and with men who don’t catcall, and might get mixed in with others by association.

Seeing people outside enjoying the nice weather while you’re at work like:

is being singled out as the ones who catcall, look at the situation at hand and tell your teammates or friends to knock it off. Stand up for women being publicly humiliated.

Show that you can be decent human beings. Please.

Stop taking sexual harassment as a joke and start proving yourselves worthy of being honorable men.

We were not expecting the outcome from the last edition to be directed to the women who came forward. It was to prove the issue of catcalling and send a message that this has to stop.

To those who do catcall, or worse, and continue to do so, quit blaming the ones who were courageous enough to come forward and share their experiences. Look at yourself and those around you who do it for fun. Even if women enjoy what you say back home, don’t assume that the women on this campus, or anywhere else for that matter, do too.

We stand for a change

Something needs to change with the discipline regarding catcalling, because it is such a huge issue on campus.

To have everyone take the sexual harassment courses is one thing, but for them to actually follow through with it and reflect what they learn is a completely different thing.

We urge those with the authority to take action and help students feel safer and happier on campus. Actually, this starts with all of us – the Board of Trustees, administration, athletic coaches, instructors, advisors, campus security, campus clubs and students. We all need to discuss this issue.

Something needs to be done.

Just one more full week of classes and then the stressful and dreaded week of finals is upon Hutchinson Community College students. For some, this is their last semester at HutchCC, while for others, it is just going to be a pause until August. But either way, students are buckling down in their classes to prepare as much as they can for the coming finals.

We have final quizzes and final projects to study and finish in just a short span of time.

Students seem to be working overtime on multiple classes and stress already radiates from campus.

going through the same pressure as can be a peak of light through the tunnel of darkness. Take advantage of your resources and push through this next week to get all of the ducks in a row. Then take what what’s been taught through the semester and make finals worth the while.

Use the library, use the material that’s been giving, use classmates and teachers to help finalize the process, and then let’s take those finals with the best we got!

When finals week comes around, don’t forget that HutchCC has a specific finals schedule. Don’t forget to double check what time your class is meeting, so you don’t regretfully miss your final class. No one wants and needs that burden.

Good luck preparing and succeeding on your finals to every student on campus.

The term ‘chick flick’ is cheep Recently on Twitter, the Netflix Film account brought up the topic of the term “chick flick”. Why is a movie genre gendered and why is it even still a used descriptor?

Now, I am not knocking chick flicks because I absolutely love them. You can ask anyone that knows me how I adore clichés and anything lovely and romantic. I am a Hallmark movie junkie, especially when it comes to Christmas time. I eat that up!

But why are movies that are made for everyone categorized as only for women?

And I don’t even need to mention that the term “chick” to describe women is just clearly outdated and meaningless.

It is created by the Newspaper Production class each week during the academic year, except for when school is not in session, or during final exams.

made or lacking in some department, even if that is completely untrue.

These movies are well made and should be celebrated and promoted, not imprisoned in a category for just one specific gender.

As put perfectly by Netflix Film, “there’s nothing inherently gendered about liking a light-hearted film with a strong female lead and emotional arc. So next time you call something a ‘chick flick,’ you better be referring to Chicken Run.” Or as I would like to suggest, Chicken Little.

GOT according to an original ‘Thronie’

Game of Thrones has been a love of mine ever since the first season, so naturally I know just about everything there is to know about the famous HBO show.

Sadly this is the last season and honestly I am not prepared for all our favorite characters to die by the end of the show.

After just seeing how pumped I was over the last season and all the theories for the end of it, our lovely instructor suggested I drag a few staffers into the pit that is Game of Thrones.

I asked Cody Schroder and Jared Shuff to join me in this journey and to say the least I don’t think either one of them enjoyed the expe-

rience.

Cody and I are good friends and I’ve made him watch a few later episodes. So I already knew he wasn’t a fan of the show but I thought it’d be pretty fun to torture him.

Jared was pretty much baffled by the content of the show, mainly all the violence, sex, and the incest (ok there’s only one pair of siblings that do that but I mean it’s still not a cool thing to do so I get why it made him uncomfy) (not trying to justify incest it’s real gross but just keep in mind the time period this is set it).

I am really into time period shows and fantasy type of stuff so this show is just a nice entertaining show. It’s got a great plot and central

theme but also when I’m watching it I don’t feel like I’m losing any brain cells.

Throughout the whole first episode we mainly just watched Jared’s reactions to the death or anything vulgar that happened.

“Oh wow ... um OK ... interesting ... why is this happening ... make them stop ... why do they have to kill so many people ... ” is just a few of the things he said over the course of the full episode.

If you’re into fantasy/time period type of show that is wildly interesting and constantly making you second guess just about everything you’ve learned in the show, then this is definitely the show for you.

Game of Thrones in the eyes of a skeptic

HBO’s Game of Thrones started way back in 2011, back when I was in middle school. Now as a freshman in college, I can finally say I’ve watched an episode of the acclaimed series. After watching the first episode of the series, I can say with complete confidence that it is not my kind of show.

I’m not saying it’s bad, it’s just not my thing.

There are definitely worse shows I’ve watched in my lifetime, and I was semi-entertained by some of what was going on.

There just wasn’t anything to it that made me want to keep watching it.

My basic reaction was mainly, “What the f--- is going on, who the f--- is that, and why are they

always f---ing?” Personally, sex scenes in shows and movies always make me uncomfortable. There’s nothing wrong with it, I just can’t help but imagine how awkward it must be for the actors to have fake sex (I hope it’s fake) for millions of people.

I get it though. Sex sells.

Do you know what else sells? Violence. And they definitely use a bit of violence in the show. When I say a bit, I mean did I really need to see all the blood squirt out of that man’s head as you decapitated him?

Apparently yes.

Also, can someone explain to me why incest is such a big thing in this show? Why does everyone want to have sex with their siblings? It makes no sense for people to look so attractive in this show when you know they should all be

physically deformed.

The actors seem to do a great job with their parts, but I’m just not a fan. I’ve never been into fantasy books or shows with dragons and knights and all that jazz. Not my cup of tea. My least favorite book/movie series is Lord of the Rings. I probably just pissed off a lot of people, but they are just so boring. To each their own I guess.

It’s not very likely that I will keep watching it.

At this point, I’m so far behind it’s not really worth it. I think I enjoyed making sarcastic remarks about the show rather than the show itself. Obviously a lot of people love it, otherwise, it wouldn’t be such a big deal all over the world. It’s just not for me. Sorry, I care more about the fact that Summer is coming rather than Winter.

The new frontier in education

Online Learning is not a new frontier in the education world. According to Peterson’s although Online Learning is a modern form of the correspondence courses beginning 170 years or more ago. It wasn’t until 1960 when the University of Illinois launched their Intranet and the Programed Logic for Automated Teaching Operations (PLATO) system that modern online and distance learning was born.

By 1997 technology had advanced to allow for the creation of Learning Management Systems (LMS’) beginning with Blackboard.

By 2010 D2L, Moodle, and Canvas joined the market.

Almost everyone who takes a class at Hutchinson Community College has used Learning zone, or the Hutchinson Community

College Canvas site, and many area High Schools also utilize Canvas (or another LMS). These LMS applications allow easy management and assessment of student submissions, as well as power the online/distance learning ecosystem.

Recently, a ‘new’ program Summit Learning has begun to make headlines across the state. Although Summit Learning was developed in 2003 it has only recently begun to gather a tiny bit of momentum in Kansas schools. Currently Wellington, McPherson, and Newton school districts have implemented the program. But what really is Summit Learning?

According to the program’s page Summit Learning is “the Summit Learning Platform helps students connect their longterm goals to daily actions.

Rachel Lyons those skills to learn skills, apply those skills to real-world Projects [sic] and reflect on their learning”.

That sounds great right?

Did I mention that Summit is free, has all the basic core subjects (English, Math, Social-Studies, and Science) and Spanish, or that it is entirely online?

Yes, everything from coursework to tests and quizzes are included in Summit. Teachers are no longer required to pull together a cohesive and

engaging lesson plan for students because the computer teachers them.

This is where parents in McPherson and Newton have drawn the line. It has been said that parents in McPherson have chosen to pull their children out of the Summit Learning programs and have them placed into regular classrooms.

Parents in Newton, however, have not gone this far. They have however, expressed their concerns to the Newton USD 373 board of education beginning in January 2019.

The reason that concerns are being given attention again in Newton are because of photos posted by a parent in a local Facebook group. These photos showed their child’s social studies assignment over Social hierarchies.

The parent’s main concern was that the content was discussed in a positive

manner. A way that would not have been allowed in a traditional history textbook like most students and employees of HutchCC will have used. Another troubling factor was the source credited with writing the literature in the images.

At the top of the second page the source is credited as the Curriculum Manager but no qualifications (i.e. History or Education degree) are given.

In all honesty, after everything that I have read on Summit Learning in Kansas after the parent post I side with the parents.

Children as young as 5th grade shouldn’t be learning from a computer screen- they should have a qualified teacher helping them, or professors who have at minimum a master’s degree at least available to them through email/ messaging system. They should not have essen-

tially unknown sources providing content for them.

Silicon Valley has very minimal place in Kansas. They have a place in smart phones and similar innovations.

They have no place in Schools and trying to innovate the learning systems that are already working.

Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle, Etc. have their specific place in schools because they allow schools to innovate and drive schools into the 21st century. They do not force students to sit in front of a screen, learning from questionable information etc.

It isn’t organic, and it doesn’t break away from students having severe mental health issues including suicidal thoughts.

Bureaucrats busy boozing A roundup of what’s happening in Topeka

A loud, drunken party was banned from the usually quiet Topeka White Linen restaurant in late February. The party of 12, in a room with a maximum occupancy of 25, included three House Republicans and two lobbyists. The manager of the fine dining restaurant told the Topeka Capital-Journal that one member of the party drank five old fashioneds in 90 minutes, one made an “inappropriate” toast to the entire restaurant, and one yelled at the sous chef. The party asked the owner if he knew who they were and if liquor laws for cutting off drunk people applied to them. One of the Representatives later commented, “I’m not aware of anything happening.”

Bills, Briefly Last year, the Kansas Corporation Commission approved Westar Energy’s request to fine customers who use solar panels and generate their electricity up to $70 a month. Environmental groups, including the Kansas Sierra Club, support The Energy Fairness Act (SB124 and HB2190) which aims to curb the fees.

The Commission’s Chairman is a former executive of an oil and gas company.

If SB 162 passes the House, private contractors under the Department for Children and Families (DCF) would be required to notify the Governor, every member of the legislature, and local media of any missing children from foster care contractors.

A fine of $500 would be imposed on a contractor for every day they do not notify the DCF of a child who went missing or had to spend a night in the contractor’s office. Children’s rights advocates filed a class-action suit in November which alleges that “Kansas’ child welfare system is, and has been… systemically failing to protect the safety and well being of vulnerable children.” The Senate unanimously passed the bill.

If HB 2006 passes the Senate, the Department of Commerce would be required “to create a database of economic development (incentives)” the agency offers to private corporations. The database would also analyze the return on investment from these corporate subsidies. The House unanimously passed the bill.

SB 1494, which would add $90 million to school funding and potentially end the litigation against the state’s unconstitutional education funding, passed the Senate and is now in House committee.

HB 2079, which would have ended the spousal exemption from sexual battery, died in the House Committee on Judiciary. The state currently defines sexual battery as “the touching of a victim who is not the spouse of the offender... who does not consent thereto, with the intent to arouse or satisfy the sexual desires of the offender or another.” According to Rep. Brett Parker, D-Overland Park, “if you have a spouse who commits sexual battery against you, you have no recourse under the law because it’s not illegal.”

If HB 2274 passes the Senate, doctors would be required to notify women seeking an abortion that an estrogen injection can reverse the procedure. The American College of OB/GYNs calls the “abortion ‘reversal’ procedures . . . unproven and unethical.”

The bill passed the House 85-39.

If HB 2326 passes the Senate, makes concealed carry licenses from any state valid and lowers the concealed carry age to 18. Ammendments to allow colleges to ban concealed carry on campuses failed.

The bill passed the House 83-41.

Governor Laura Kelly signed into law: SB 9, giving $115 million to KPERS, the state’s public employee retirement fund. The amount equals a payment the legislature skipped in 2016 but does not make up for all the rest of the skipped payments used to support the Brownback administration’s tax experiment.

SB 78, protecting victims of domestic violence from eviction and denial of housing if they are still otherwise qualified.

SB 130, giving discretion to county election officials to allow for registered voters to vote at any polling location in their registered county. However, SB 43, which would have allowed Kansans to register to vote up to and on election day, died in committee. Voters still must register before an arbitrarily-set deadline.

HB 2191, allowing issued search warrants for electronic devices or electronically stored information “for examination and review anywhere.”

The ACLU of Kansas testified that the bill includes “numerous privacy concerns” and potential Fourth Amendment infringements, citing broad language that may be used to justify “(seizing) more data than what is identified in the warrant.”

Collegian, Dragon’s Tale awarded

The Hutchinson Collegian, the student newspaper of Hutchinson Community College, took home nearly 30 awards at the annual Kansas Collegiate Media convention in Wichita.

The convention was April 7-8 at the Drury Inn in Wichita.

Brenna Eller, Little River sophomore, is the Collegian’s Editor In Chief and won the most awards – 10. She was also the second runner-up for two-year-college journalist of the year. But Eller, a journalism major, was more interested in what she could do to improve The Collegian the rest of this year and beyond. The Collegian, for the second straight year, received the Silver Medal for overall excellence.

“Definitely trying to see what the other papers are doing, see how we can get better, or the staff to get better next year, to try to get first place,” Eller said. “I think overall though, we had great work that was submitted and that everyone worked hard for what they put into the paper.

Students went to breakout sessions, where they learned about the world of journalism. Social media was one of the main topics this year, as that was the subject Derby journalism teacher Joanna Chadwick spoke about, as did the April 8 keynote speaker, Ben Gardner, better known as “Trooper Ben” on Twitter.

Aided by the number of awards, Eller said she hopes more students consider either majoring in journalism, or at least joining The Collegian or Dragon’s Tale Magazine.

The Chief encourages students who are not taking journalism should try it out “Really, anyone can write. It just takes the interest,” Eller said. “Think about what you are interested in. For some people, its sports, entertainment, some of it just news related or political. Try to get into writing about it and see what comes out of it.”

The Hutchinson Community baseball team has been on quite the roll lately. The Blue Dragons, who are now 32-16, have won four of their last five games.

“We’re on a good roll, and I think the thing we’re doing is we’re finding ways to win,” Blue Dragons coach Ryan Schmidt said.

“Whether it’s by scoring a lot of runs or playing really good defense or good pitching, we’re finding ways to put games together to put us in the spot that we want to be in.”

The Blue Dragons are currently chasing the conference title, and the upcoming weeks are going to be big indicators of whether the Blue Dragons will win the title. The Blue Dragons, who are tied with Colby Community College at 16-8, are scheduled to finish up a four-game series with the Trojans on Saturday. The series started Thursday, and it will have big implications on which team could win the conference title.

The players seem to love being in situations like these. Riley Metzger, a sophomore out of Stillwater, Oklahoma said he was enjoying the race for first.

Spring Fling events continue

This week at Hutchinson Community College is Spring Fling.

So far this week, the events going on were a movie night on Monday, a t-shirt giveaway at a Blue Dragon baseball game on Tuesday, Old School Game Night on Wednesday, and a dodge ball tournament with a pig roast on Thursday. Today, there is a spring fling carnival from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Some students would like to see more events like this throughout the year around school.

“I think it would be really cool and it would bring a more community-like feel to campus,” HutchCC student Samantha Thatcher said.

Dana Hinshaw, the Director of Residence Life and Student Activites at HutchCC, said that students can look forward to events in the future.

“The Campus Activities Board puts on five major events each year,” Hinshaw said. “Three in the fall and two in the spring. Three of those are week-long events (fall and spring homecoming and spring fling) and we also sponsor the Two-Day Activities Fair at the beginning of the year, and ‘It’s Flippin’ Finals Night’ at the end of the Fall Semester.”

Would it be possible to have more events around campus for students more often?

“Yes, it is possible,” Hinshaw said.

“But putting on the events is costly. We have costs in the equipment we use, prizes we give away, snacks we serve and staff there to oversee the event. And we have a budget that we must operate within. So, Campus Activities Board students are trying to get the most bang for their buck with events. If we have an event that only has 25 people participate and it cost us $500 to put it on, we essentially spent $20 per person for that event.”

Blue Dragon golfers dominate again to seal eighth conference title

WICHITA - Rain wiped out the final round of the Jayhawk Conference Championship, the third and final league tournament of the season, but the rain didn’t wash out Hutchinson Community College’s conference championship dreams.

The tournament was shortened to 36 holes, due to rain that started just a few minutes into the final round. The ninth-ranked Blue Dragons team won the tournament and clinched the 2019 league championship.

Blue Dragon freshman Charlie Crockett was the 2019 Jayhawk individual champion and five Blue Dragons overall earned all-conference honors.

Winning all three tournaments, the Blue Dragons amassed 28 points in the team standings.

Crockett, a freshman from England, won two of the three league tournaments and finished tied for third in the other for a total of 32.5 points.

Peyton Austin, a Wichita freshman finished third overall in the season standings with 16 points.

Crockett and Austin were both first-team All-Jayhawk Conference.

Tying for the first conference tournament title, Nathan McCullogh, a freshman from Scotland, was eighth overall. Liam Debattista, a freshman from England, was ninth with eight points. McCullogh and Debattista were second-team All-Jayhawk.

Lake Leroux, a sophomore from Columbia, Missouri, was honorable mention, tying for 15th.

The Blue Dragons won the Jayhawk Championship team title with a 36-hole total of 600 (304-296). Crockett won the individual title at 2-over 144 after rounds of 74 and 70 on Monday.

Austin tied for third at 8-over 150. Austin carded rounds of 76 and 74 on Monday.

Leroux and Charlie Herbert tied for 11th at 153. Leroux had rounds of 77 and 76, while Herbert posted scores of 77 and 76.

McCulloch, Hutch’s fifth golfer for team scoring, tied for 18th with teammate Max Ontjes, who is playing as an individual, at 157. McCulloch had rounds of 77 and 80, while Ontjes had rounds of 75 and 92.

(April 15-21) Charlie Crockett, men’s golf The week: Crockett was at his best again in the second of three Jayhawk Conference tournaments.

Crockett shot a Crockett threeround score of 215, or 1-under par, over 54 holes at Sand Creek Station in Newton. Crockett opened the tournament with a 1-under par 71, and followed that up with consecutive even-par 72s. That was good enough for a six-shot win against Garden City’s Jake Bay. The season: Crockett, who hails from England, has been one of the NJCAA’s top golfers.

He won the first two Jayhawk Conference tournaments and is often one of the Blue Dragons’ top scorers.

Two of Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball sophomores officially announced their choices of a four-year program on Wednesday.

Women’s basketball – Two of HutchCC’s women’s basketball sophomores officially announced their choices of a four-year program on Wednesday.

Dejanae Roebuck and Tia Bradshaw just so happened to pick the same school four-year school. Roebuck and Bradshaw will both play at the University of Texas-El Paso.

Roebuck, a 6-foot forward from Olathe, and Bradshaw, a 5-8 guard from Dodge City, were key contributors on Hutchinson’s 2018 and 2019 NJCAA Tournament teams.

The 2019 Blue Dragons went 33-4 and advanced to the NJCAA Tournament national semifinals.

Roebuck was a third-team NJCAA All-American this season, as well as first-team All-Jayhawk West and All-Region 6. She was the leading scorer for Hutchinson with 15 points per game, and the seventh-leading scorer in the Jayhawk Conference. She was 12th in the league in rebounding at 7.3 rebounds per game Roebuck completed her Blue Dragon career as the sixth all-team leading scorer

in team history with 998 points. She is the No. 3 all-time rebounder in Hutchinson women’s history with 582 boards. Roebuck also ranks sixth on the career free throw list (236), ninth in rebounding average (9.2 rebounds per game) and 10th in total field goals (359).

Bradshaw averaged 6.9 points and 2.73 assists per game as a sophomore. She shot 39.1 percent from the field and 28.1 percent from 3-point range. Bradshaw has a tremendous NJCAA Tournament, averaging 9.7 points with 10 assists and five steals.

Bradshaw completed her Blue Dragon career with 232 assists, which ranks 10th on the all-time Blue Dragon assists list.

They are the 29th and 30th players to sign with Division I programs since John Ontjes took over the program before the 2007-08 season. They are the 51st and 52nd players to move on to a four-year program under Ontjes.

Men’s basketball – Hutchinson Community College men’s basketball sophomore James Rojas picked up another All-American award on Monday.

The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) named Rojas a first-team NJCAA All-American.

Today, at 10:00 am and 2:30 pm in Shears Technology Center, Hutchinson Community College president Carter File is holding a meeting to discuss the future of the tennis courts on campus.

The courts are used for occasional HutchCC baseball practice, HutchCC child care takes children there so they can run around, or other random activities such as intramural dodge ball, but courts are rarely used for tennis.

HutchCC hasn’t had a tennis team in more than a decade.

Some informal suggestions have been mentioned through the years as to what to do with the courts, such as rebuilding the courts, demolishing the courts to make a college welcome center, make more parking, and even expanding the adjacent garden.

Students and faculty are free to attend and share their ideas. The meetings will both be in the Justice Theater.
