FINDING HOPE AS WE REFLECT ON A POST-COVID ERA, ELECTION MADNESS AND NATURAL DISASTERS

S

o many of you have been with THE HUB from the beginning, back in 2002. You know that I don’t know how to do anything other than tell it like it is! In that spirit, let me just say that 2020 is a year that will I will not soon forget!

As we enter a new Fall season, so many businesses are closed permanently in the wake of COVID-19 restrictions, hundreds of thousands have been left homeless, and millions more are on unemployment. As I write this, much of the state is literally on fire again, with thick, obtrusive smoke everywhere.

We just had an earthquake tremor in southern California, and beyond the borders of our home state, we have hurricanes tearing up the south! I shake my head, and wonder whether these are truly the signs of the apocalypse.

you and yours. Toochie is a true sweetheart, WE LOVE HER DEARLY, and we are asking for the miracles of our Lord to heal her and bring her back into good health.

OK! Now I can wipe away a couple of tears and tell you how excited I am about our annual Exceptional Women Of Color (EWOC) event! This our annual Exceptional Women issue of THE HUB magazine includes a feature on Robinson, along with spotlights Of Color (EWOC) event! We have a on 18 exceptional women who are wonderful, 3-day line-up of VIRTUAL receiving our 2020 EWOC Excellence events, including this year’s keynote Award.

This issue of THE HUB magazine includes a feature on Robinson, along with spotlights on 18 exceptional women who are receiving our 2020 EWOC Excellence Award.

The post-COVID era promises to last for 5-10 years, as we have all had to adapt and learn new ways of working and enjoying free time with our families and friends. The impact of the virus on the entertainment scene alone has broken my heart, with venues like the Mondavi Center, The Gallo Center for the Arts, and Folsom Lake Theatre having been closed to the public, and major concert series at venues like Thunder Valley Casino, Concord Pavilion, Shoreline Ampitheatre, and Golden 1 Center having been cancelled, not to mention performances at our beloved Broadway Sacramento, just to name a few…all due to COVID-19.

And horrible as all of that is, none of it matters when we consider the human cost of the virus: over 200,000 lives lost nationwide, with over 15,000 dead here in California.

We try to remain sane as we learn to manage all of this, as we deal with a president who is ignoring facts and science, and repeatedly declaring that there will be a coronavirus vaccine available by November. This is very SCARY TO ME! Speaking of our president, we have an election on November 3rd, along with some very important decisions we need to make regarding several propositions at the local, regional, and national levels. PLEASE pay attention, READ, READ, READ and get informed, and don’t miss the opportunity to ACTIVATE your vote!

As I Corinthians 13 says, “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy. It does not boast. It is not proud.

It does not dishonor others. It is not self-seeking. It is not easily angered. It keeps not record of wrongs.”

It is also with grace and sadness that I share that my dear sister, Toochie, was recently diagnosed with ovarian cancer. I ask that you keep her and our entire family in prayer, as I always keep | 4 | T H E HU B MA G A Z I N E

As we go into the holidays and look to the end of the year, I humbly ask you to hold no grudges, say hello to your neighbors, volunteer your time if you are able, and call to check up on your family members that you have not spoken to. In 2020, more than ever before, we really need to be present for each other, support each other, and love each other.

E

ven if your math skills aren’t that great, it’s easy to see that Wendy Raquel Robinson is a triple threat.

She has been an accomplished actor, dancer, and choreographer. But anyone who knows Robinson knows one thing: she’s just getting started!

“The characters that I’ve played have allowed me to be my alter ego,” Robinson said. “I’m really shy, believe it or not. I’m kinda quiet — unless you know me! And then it’s on! But I’ve hidden behind a lot of my characters who have allowed me to be outspoken and ballsy and brassy. That’s what I love about acting!”

With all of her subsequent professional success, Robinson has never lost her “THE CHARACTERS connection to her community, and THAT I’VE PLAYED HAVE she’s committed time and financial ALLOWED ME TO BE MY resources — literally putting her ALTER EGO. I’M KINDA QUIET money where her mouth is. She’s — UNLESS YOU KNOW ME! the co-founder of Amazing Grace AND THEN IT’S ON!” Conservatory, a theatrical training ground and dance studio for teens in South Central Los Angeles.

Robinson made a name for herself on The Steve Harvey Show, delivering a three-time NAACP Image Award-nominated performance over the sitcom’s six seasons. Well before that, she appeared in several stage plays including The Vagina Monologues, Black Women’s Blues, Agnes of God, A Midsummer’s Night Dream, The Colored Museum, and Vanities.

Young folks should know that with Robinson, success was a process. During an interview with DL Hughley, Robinson recalled having been kicked out of high school!

“I was a lot,” Robinson laughed. “I went to Hollywood High School, and it was before… medicinal purposes…marijuana…,” she said. “I got caught up! I was ahead of my time! I was hanging with the wrong people, and to all of the young people, I want to say DON’T DO DRUGS!” Because of the characters for which Robinson has become known, fans assume that the actress is brash and outspoken. Not so, according to a conversation she had with Wendy Williams.

We will recognize a total of eighteen women - CEOs, retirees, mothers, and physicians among them - represent everything a woman is and can be while meeting multiple demands. We recognize them as pillars of our community.

Born in Sacramento and now going on seven beautiful years of marriage, Michelle Crisp has always had a passion for helping others and working with children. Her grandmother and other family members, who are all educators, greatly influenced her decision to become a teacher. She remembers several teachers throughout her educational career who also made a positive impact on her life and desire to become a teacher. While in high school, Michelle volunteered to tutor neighborhood children several times a week which furthered ignited her desire to teach.

In 2003, after graduating from UC Berkeley, she worked as teacher/coach in the San Francisco area. The cultural oasis of students really showed her how important it was for teachers to be able to connect to students both in and out of the classroom to successfully teach them. In 2012, she entered into the UC Davis Teaching Credential/Masters program and learned early on that perseverance was a must when managing a classroom, building relationships with students, staff and parents, while navigating her way through the basics of teaching.

This experience served as a powerful influence on her eventually becoming a passionate teacher.

Her greatest accomplishment in education is installing confidence through empowering students to become lifelong learners. During her first year of teaching one of her students nominated her for Teacher of the Year at his dentist office and she won. This would be one of her greatest moments in teaching because of the kind and thoughtful act of her student, who she ultimately made an impact on. In 2018, she was awarded Teacher of the Year for both her school and district. Just recently, she completed the Administrative Credential Program through the Sacramento County of Education Office, with the hopes of advancing her educational career.

PUBLIC AFFAIRS CONSULTANT, KAISER PERMANENTE FAVORITES: Book: Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison Soul food restaurant: Fixin’s Soul Kitchen in Oak Park - Sacramento Vacation Getaway: Kauai, Hawaii Diana Croon White cherishes the relationships she developed during her 21 years as a Public Affairs Representative for Kaiser Permanente. She feels fortunate to have worked for a company that cares about and believes in improving the health and wellbeing of our communities.

Externally, Diana has worked with area chambers of commerce including the Sacramento Black Chamber of Commerce, Rancho Cordova and Folsom chambers; local school health programs; and community-based organizations. She was responsible for activating sponsorships and KP’s presence at external events such as Kaiser Permanente’s annual Women’s Fitness Festival.

Internally, she coordinated and planned facility-based events such as groundbreakings and open houses, and assisted colleagues and other departments with their events. She also coordinated the company’s annual Community giving Campaign, annual toy/food holiday food drive, and MLK Jr. Day of Service activities.

In 2010, Diana was part of a team that reinstated the Sacramento Chapter of the Kaiser Permanente African American Professional Association (KPAAPA) and has served on the KPAAPA committee which has presented a successful women’s conference since 2014.

Diana was also a member of Kaiser Permanente’s North Valley Equity, Inclusion & Diversity team. One memorable project was bringing a ground-breaking author to Sacramento to speak to Kaiser Permanente healthcare providers. In 2013, she helped coordinate the Sacramento visit of author Anne Fadiman, “The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down: A Hmong Child, Her American Doctors, and the Collision of Two Cultures,” a book on the culture clash of a Hmong family with western health care.

With Kaiser Permanente’s support, Diana had the opportunity to work with many other diverse communities including the Asian Health Professionals Association (AHPA) that for five years sponsored an annual health fair for under-insured and uninsured; Sacramento Black Nurses Association with its scholarship and outreach programs; 100 Black Women of Sacramento; Community Cancer Coalition; the NCNW Children of Promise | 1 2 | T H E HU B MA G A Z I N E

workshops; My Sister’s House; and Correctional Officers Who Care’s Soul Stroll for Black Infant Health with KPAAPA Sacramento participation. Diana is a strong believer in service to others and her job has allowed her the opportunity to do this. She has independence and flexibility to share her knowledge and experience with Sacramento’s diverse communities as well as work with Kaiser Permanente’s amazing staff and physicians.

Being able to support non-profits encourages her, though it is challenging to choose between so many worthy organizations. “We can all make a difference in improving the lives of people in our communities through service or donations,” says Diana. “I encourage others at work to find their passion, to find a cause, and to volunteer.

My passion is improving the health and well-being of the communities where I live and work.”

In 2011, she assisted in developing the popular KP Health Pals program along with the Folsom Administration team at Kaiser Permanente. This mentoring program with fifth graders is still ongoing and is a Kaiser Permanente “investment” in our future generations. Diana also worked with the Health Programs managers in the Folsom Cordova school district where together they developed the district’s HEAL walking program.

Diana’s prior work experience helped her develop her work style of collaboration, developing relationships, and bringing diverse groups together. At the Sacramento Bee as a community relations coordinator she represented The Bee with their diverse constituents on several boards: Oak Park Summer Concerts, Festival de la Familia, Pacific Rim Street Fest, and Sacramento Area Literacy Coalition.

She coordinated a community focus meeting for women leaders which gave birth to The Bee’s annual women’s conference.

Diana has a combined 38 years of community relations experience. Her recognition includes: KPAAPA Community Service Award (2017); Dr. Anvar Velji Award for Diversity and Inclusion for Outstanding Achievement in the Area of Cross Cultural Care and Humanitarian Community Service (2013); Partners in Educational Excellence Award

by Association of California School Administrators Region III (2007); FCUSD Healthy Eating, Active Living Award for helping students in the Folsom Cordova school district run and stretch for the stars (2007); Festival de la Familia Service Award (1999); and YWCA Woman of Color Award for Community Relations (1996).

Celebrity male icon you admire: I’ve always admired Paul Robeson, a very accomplished concert artist, stage and film actor, athlete and civil rights activist, because he used his fame to raise awareness of racism and fought for social justice.

Hobbies: Collect children’s multi-cultural books and dolls, read, take photographs, walk my dogs, Luci and Daisy, Jazzercise and Zumba.

Heroes: My parents, William and Taeko Croon, who taught me it’s good to have passion for a cause but to do my research so I could defend my position if needed and could speak intelligently about the issue. When I got involved in political issues in high school, my mother said proudly that I took after my grandfather who was a rebel.

My parents also taught me the importance of service to others. I remember watching my mother from the car as she delivered a bag of groceries to a young soldier and his wife even though our family was on a limited budget.

Best life experience: The birth of my daughter and raising her with my late husband. I’m so proud we raised a confident, grounded, socially committed woman. I now get so much joy watching her play with her daughter – my granddaughter.

Choice of entertainment: Shopping with my friends and my sister; browsing books at local bookstores; walking along the waterfronts in Tacoma, Washington with my sister; attending live summer concerts with friends; following the Black Rodeo circuit.

On mentorship: I’ve been fortunate to have several wonderful strong women as mentors. These women are confident, intelligent, encouraging, caring and committed to improving their communities. They helped me realize my potential, to appreciate my diversity and what I have to offer to the community.

Thoughts on upcoming 2020 presidential election: It is critical in this upcoming election that we vote for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris to ensure equity and representation in policies that affect our everyday lives.

To make positive change, to make our voices heard -- to undo damage by the current administration that has been racist, divisive, cruel, misogynistic, and anti-science. We need leaders who are inclusive and empathetic and not divisive.

Something surprising about you: I attended kindergarten in Frankfurt, Germany where my father was stationed in | 1 3 | T H E HU B MA G A Z I N E

resilient hardworking motivator the Army. He was a cook in the segregated army and later became a medic and worked at Fort Lewis, Washington.

He met my mom during the American occupation of Japan (after WWII). My parents sent me to a German kindergarten when I was four instead of the U.S. military school so I could interact with the local kids and learn to speak German. I did speak German then – as well as a kindergartner could – and I still remember an old German children’s song that my babysitter, Mrs. Kaiser, taught me.

I spent a lot of time with her while my mother took care of my younger brother and newborn sister while my Dad worked.

Slogan you live by: Serve others and help those less fortunate. We are not complete without service to others.

REGIONAL MEDICAL DIRECTOR, CHILD ABUSE SERVICES AND PREVENTION (CASP) PROGRAM AT KAISER PERMANENTE Michele Evans, MD, MHS, grew up in Rancho Cordova and attended Cordova High School before leaving to major in both Ethnic Studies and Molecular and Cell Biology at U.C. Berkeley. After receiving her undergraduate degree, she moved to Baltimore, Maryland to study in the field of public health at Johns Hopkins School of Public Health in the Department of Population and Family Dynamics. Michele completed her thesis work at Howard University Hospital during which she reinstated the development of a family-centered approach to providing early intervention services in accord with the legislation of the Program for Infants and Toddlers (Part C of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act).

Michele attended medical school at the University of Southern California before completing her pediatric residency at the Los Angeles County & U.S.C. Medical Center. She then joined the U.S.C. faculty and remained at the county hospital to work in the Violence Intervention Program conducting evaluations for child abuse and neglect and providing general pediatric care for children in the dependency care system. She is excited about returning to the Sacramento area to be closer to her wonderful family and friends and looks forward to developing relationships with new families in her pediatric practice.

She leads a team that works across City departments to design effective strategies to engage, educate and empower the community. She works on multiple projects simultaneously and translates community and business needs into information to support City policy, projects, and programs. She has designed a comprehensive program to inform the public of the City’s activities and objectives; organizing and convening community meetings and focus groups; attending community outreach events on behalf of the department; and preparing and implementing marketing and promotional programs. She is an experienced leader committed to modern performance management practices to implement strategies designed to engage staff, develop their knowledge and skills, and achieve high levels of performance. Lynette’s primary goal is to assist the City of Sacramento in building trust externally in communities on the neighborhood level.

Previously, she served as the Senior Supply Chain Responsibility Manager for the Small Business and Disabled Veteran Business Enterprise Program at Pacific Gas and Electric Company helping to ensure PG&E spent over 40% of the contracting dollars with Diverse and Disabled Veteran Owned companies, which accounted for over $2.5 billion in spend annually. Prior to that, Lynette managed the CalPERS’s Small Business and Disabled Veterans Business (DVBE) Program and was responsible for CalPERS not only meeting but exceeding contract goals with small businesses and DVBEs. Lynette was the recipient of the 2016 CalPERS Achieving Performance Excellence Award, a prestigious honor that is awarded to less than one percent of CalPERS staff, and is nominated by peers. Additional award include: 2015 California State Agency Recognition Advocate of the Year Bronze Award, 2014 California State Agency Recognition Advocate of the Year Gold Award, 2014 California Small Business Advocate Innovation Program Award.

Lynette’s early career and background also includes a career in policy as she was a Senior Policy and Legislative Advocate for criminal justice at the Drug Policy Alliance and health policy issues at the California Department of Public Health. My mentor: Les Simmons is my mentor he just doesn’t know it. I envision being able to be paid to travel around the world speaking and sharing knowledge and my experiences. Thoughts on the upcoming 2020 presidential election: Very scary and disappointed with the selection of candidates. We as Black citizens need to organize and demand specific changes for our vote and from leadership.

Something surprising about you: I used to be a personal chef and an urban clothes buyer for a couple of stores in Atlanta.

Michelle Martin-Neal is a committed Christian who devotes her life to supporting the growth of the African American business, civic and religious communities of Sacramento. Martin-Neal is dedicated to serving others in their own pursuit of excellence by assisting them in unleashing their personal power and helping them align their values with their individual life goals.

Michelle is a Sacramento native who has a daughter and son-in-law, and three grandchildren. Michelle refers to her mother as her rock because her wisdom and guidance is still always ready to give and be received. But, being the only girl in the middle of four brothers, Michelle was the apple of her late father’s eyes. Her father instilled morals and values into her that, as an adult, have sustained her civically, financially and spiritually.

For over 40 years, Michelle has always loved serving and worshipping at New Pleasant Grove Baptist Church where she remains active. She serves in a variety of positions, including Announcement Clerk, Church Secretary, Event Coordinator, Public Relations Coordinator, and Inspirational Choir Member.

As an active member of Sacramento Valley Section of National Council of Negro Women Inc. (NCNW), Michelle has been afforded opportunities to coordinate several annual signature events, including the Sweet Potato Festival, Christian Women of The Year Luncheon, and the Children of Promise Conference.

Also, Michelle has volunteered time to help coordinate, fundraise, and participate in several annual walks supporting organizations such as the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk; Susan G. Komen, Race For The Cure; and the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk. Additionally, Michelle volunteers for the annual California Exposition State Fair, Walk Along Program, which aims to promote trust between the community and law enforcement.

She approaches her community activities with great joy and enthusiasm. Her clarity of purpose, indomitable spirit, vivacious personality, eternal optimism, and ability to persuade has helped people find breakthrough strategies and solutions for overcoming and confronting problems.

On mentorship: My parents because the lessons they taught me shaped me into the independent person I am today. My parents encouraged me to begin working at the age of 19 as a state employee. They gave me a solid foundation, spiritual guidance, unconditional love, and everything I needed. Other mentors are Jay King and Leon Guidry. During my post retirement, I was presented with a new opportunity to serve as a co-producer at 97.5FM KDEE radio station. I was introduced to the broadcasting arena which has broadened my outreach to the community. I’m afforded the opportunity to stay engaged, connected, while delivering news updates that impact the local community.

Thoughts on the upcoming 2020 Presidential Election: Our ancestors died in order for us to gain the right to vote, we have a responsibility and obligation to vote. Everyone should get educated ahead of time and study the upcoming candidates’ positions and propositions, and tell their friends, family and inner circle to vote. I advocate for voter registration and informing the public that there are several ways to vote and when voting by mail, two stamps are required.

Best life experience: Being the parent of my daughter and grandparent of her three beautiful children. I have also enjoyed being the sister to my four awesome brothers.

Additionally, winning a dance contest (dropping it like it’s hot) at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York in 2019 was a life experience highlight.

Something surprising about you: I love proofreading and it bothers me when a word is spelled incorrectly. My nickname is Mickey.

Nkiruka states: “I love helping businesses recover from the COVID-19 pandemic through the Economic Injury Disaster Loan.” She previously served as a gubernatorial appointee at Business Consumer Services and Housing Agency under Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr.’s administration from 2016 to 2019. As Assistant Director of Planning and Policy, she was responsible for assisting with the development and implementation of special projects, housing policy, sustainability, communications, emergency services, and regulations.

Born in Vallejo, California and an alumnae of Sacramento State University, Lorreen has been married for 13 years and is a 15-year veteran legislative staffer and the servant leader/president of Black Youth Leadership Project (BYLP). BYLP provides civic engagement opportunities, hand-on experience of learning the legislative process, and exposure legislators, community leaders and key staff.

Additionally, Lorreen was honored with the California Association of Black Lawyers 2019 Civil Rights Activist Award for her “advocacy on behalf of our youth.” Lorreen and her sister just recently launched Pryor & Pryor Consulting.

With the rise of inequity in the public education system, Lorreen expanded BYLP’s programming to include direct service advocacy to families experiencing racism, teacher targeting and disparate treatment to broker agreements in which children are restored mentally, physically and emotionally.

Lorreen leads the team that puts on the Legislative Open House and Next Level Luncheon experience for more than 100 Black students annually; Summer Social Justice Bootcamp, established Sacramento’s first-ever Black High School Graduation in partnership with the Faith Based Community; created five Support Networks to help the community cope with the recent uprisings; provided community movie nights, created an online documentary club; as well as works with families and local school districts to resolve issues stemming from racial targeting, teacher bias and disparate treatment to restore the child so they can thrive in a more supportive environment.

She has also co-written board policies and administrative regulations in Elk Grove Unified School District (EGUSD), as it relates to the delineation of responsibilities between administrators and school resource officers and is currently in talks with other school districts to adopt the same policies. Lorreen also sits on the hiring committee for new School Resource Officers in EGUSD, a district that has refused to dismantle their SRO program. | 2 4 | T H E HU B MA G A Z I N E

Ana Quiñónez, a California native, is a single mom and passionate teacher. She attended CSU, Sacramento, and teaches Spanish. Ana gave up a teaching job at a highly reputable high school to transfer to a Title 1 school, where she can be engaged in supporting struggling students and families. Ana loves teaching, however her passion is working in the family engagement arena, assisting with family matters helping the community, and assisting students and families. Ana hosts several parent events & brings resources from all over the region as well as incorporating fun cultural activities for the event with resources such as health, food and clothing support. The ability to communicate to the hispanic community does wonders. Ana is always willing to jump in to help someone in need. “My favorite thing about teaching is being able to be a club co-advisor. “I’m super proud of the work our Future Teacher Club is doing. My least favorite thing about being a teacher is constantly having the feeling of not being done- there’s always more to do,” Ana shares.

Ana volunteers for many groups within the school district and the community. She is an adviser for the Latinos Unidos Club, co-adviser for the BSU clubs, and team leader for the Equity Department. Ana is passionate about protecting the environment and healthy, earthy foods.

Ana supports African American businesses, and adores homemade crafts.

AT A GLANCE: Best workday strategy: I can accomplish a lot if I rise early in the morning.

Hero: My mom … she’s a tough cookie that has been through some major obstacles such as immigrating and learning a new language as a young adult. She is determined and insanely optimistic. She’s such a funny lady, too. We’ve both been our biggest cheerleaders.

Best life experience: I got to visit the famous ancient pyramids near Mexico City with my child and partner. My little son was in his baby carrier as we climbed up the steps. My partner chose a tiny local restaurant with unique food. It was an amazing place with people I love.

On mentorship: As a new teacher in San Juan Unified, I was assigned veteran teacher Corinne Poirier for my induction program. For a full school year she helped me with immediate needs and guided me in reflecting on my practice. I greatly appreciated her expertise and equity lens. She was warm and direct at the same time.

She helped me through one of the hardest years of my life personally as well as professionally. A big reason for moving to my current school was to follow her as she became a vice principal there. I want to keep learning from the best.

Thoughts on the upcoming 2020 president election: I’ll be voting for the democratic presidential candidate, Joe Biden. Kamala Harris is such an impressive figure and I’m glad that she will be on the ticket as VP (although, I’d love to see her as president). I think folks should vote their conscience and consider our most vulnerable neighbors.

All people should have access to fair wages, housing, healthcare, and education. I’m also looking forward to supporting Proposition 15 (Schools and Communities First) and Proposition 16 (repeal the ban on affirmative action). I don’t live within the boundaries of the City of Sacramento, but I’m rooting for Measure C to be placed on the November ballot to protect tenants with rent control protections especially during this uncertain economic time.

What do you like about Sacculturalhub.com and THE HUB Magazine? I love getting my hands on a new issue of THE HUB. There’s nothing like the feel of glossy pages!

I appreciate that this local magazine highlights important national issues and figures, but also local stories. It’s a great way to be aware of local issues and leaders. As a Chicana, I realize that it’s important to read up and support Black leadership, businesses, and writers. It’s a really neat publication. The Sac Cultural Hub website does the same, but with daily news that can be helpful to follow. It’s really cool to see how this organization holds several annual events.

BUSINESS OWNER, SUTTER STREET TAQUERIA FAVORITES: Book: Rain of Gold by Victor Villasenor Soul food restaurant: Saroms Southern Kitchen in Sacramento Vacation getaway: Cabo San Lucas Rosario Rodriguez is a community-focused business leader with a heart for the City of Folsom. She and her husband, Paul, opened Sutter Street Taqueria in 2016.

The business has flourished and is a popular gathering spot in Folsom’s Historic District.

Engaged with all facets of the community, Rosario was named Woman of the Year by the California State Assemblyman Kevin Kiley. She is a graduate of the Folsom Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership program that gave her insight into the business and municipal operations in the city. She is a member of the California Preservation Foundation, vice chair of the Historic District Commission and serves on the Folsom Economic Development board. She is an ambassador for and served on the Folsom Chamber of Commerce board of directors. She is on the board of directors of Folsom’s Twin Lakes Food Bank and is a member of the Rotary Club of Folsom.

Thoughts on the upcoming 2020 presidential election: Now more than ever it is critical that we get Trump out of office. His demonstration of racism, misogyny, elitism, corruption and many other forms of toxicity, is detrimental and dangerous to so many in this country. As such, we must get out and vote for Biden/Harris. With that said, no matter who is running the country, our time of sitting back and doing nothing are over. We must continue to harness the power of the people to ensure equal rights and equitable treatment for all. It starts with local representation and up. We must think about it as infiltrating the system. I am so hopeful as such as Reps. Ilhan Omar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, Ayanna Pressley and Cori Bush will lead the way.

Soul food restaurant: Louisiana Heaven in South Sacramento Simone Thomas is the Owner and Training Center Director for Heart Vibes CPR. She has been training Sacramento, Sutter and Yuba counties since 2016. Her passion for educating the community is what drives her towards her dream to train CPR. Simone volunteers her time with educational presentations to grassroots organizations and activists in order to reach our city’s youth, elderly and homeless. “Training Our Community to Save Our Community” is her company’s motto. “The gratification I feel after training a family is the most rewarding part of this work. Oftentimes, I have the opportunity to chat with teenagers about why they feel it’s important to be CPR certified. The common response I receive is, “To help my parents if they need me.” There isn’t a greater feeling than that,” she shares. The hardest part about managing and running a business is time management. “Family and friends mean a lot to me and I am often unable to attend a lot of functions,” says Simone, “Luckily, I have a strong village that is understanding and supportive of the mission and vision of Heart Vibes CPR.” Simone is also the Center Programs Manager for Wind Youth Services, located in the heart of downtown Sacramento. The agency serves 60-70 homeless youth between the ages of 18 to 24 each day. As the Center Programs Manager, Simone develops collaborative relationships with various agencies in Sacramento to provide youth with fundamental life skills, employment readiness, medical/mental health resources and continued education opportunities. Prior to her promotion as Center Programs Manager, Simone served as the Housing Programs Manager where she developed partnerships with multiple property owners and property management companies within Sacramento County.

Simone serves on the Board of Directors for the Arthritis Foundation, Sacramento Chapter where she provides Business & Organization Re-development, Financial Support, Education & Training and Advocacy. Evelyn Turner is a business owner and dedicated servant to the community. She serves as Director of Grocery Distribution for the Potter’s House Church Food Pantry. Having served in this capacity for the past three years, she leads a dedicated staff of ten, plus three volunteers who serve the Del Paso Heights (DPH) community. Through the social welfare work of Mrs. Turner, their grocery giveaway schedule is five days per week, rain or shine. She oversees the distribution of over 4,000 lbs of food per month, and she and her team serve approximately 789 households and 3,000 individuals.

Evelyn also owns Unique Finds & Custom Designs, creating “plates, pillows, and pretty stuff.” Originally from Lansing, Michigan, Evelyn has been married for 26 years and is the mother of 11 children with 23 grandchildren!

Over the past two decades, Dr. Warren’s work to improve health and wellness has spanned from corporate pharmacy benefits management, National Pharmaceutical & Therapeutics presenter, clinical consultancy for pharmaceutical contract negotiations, medical group program management and development, and direct patient care through Sacramento County’s Pharmacy and Clinic and now a co-founder and Executive Director for Neighborhood Wellness Foundation.

In 2015, Dr. Warren co-founded Neighborhood Wellness Foundation (NWF), a non-profit community based organization with a mission to disrupt inter-generational trauma and poverty in Del Paso Heights. NWF accomplishes their mission with a unique integration of an interdisciplinary team that includes clinicians, business entrepreneurs, and the generationally rooted neighborhood navigators.

NWF approaches each challenge through the lens of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES), toxic stress and barriers to education and economic attainment. This perspective has changed Dr. Warren’s entire approach to her professional and her personal life. “We are building from the inside out and bottom up, leveraging our roots in Del Paso Heights to harness the power of shared life experiences to help transform lives. We work together to strategically create pathways to address the generational challenges and improve educational attainment, long-term employment and stability in Del Paso Heights.”

Dr. Warren was born in the Philippines and is a seconddegree Black Belt in Taekwondo, and continues to engage in fitness at prime-time boxing. She loves music, baking and traveling. She is married to City Councilmember Allen Warren of District 2 and they have three children; Braxton, Synclaire and Roman.

Thoughts on the upcoming 2020 Presidential Election?

We are in unprecedented times. Our world is facing two life threatening public health crises: The COVID-19 pandemic and the centuries old structural racialized oppression only recently acknowledged. We are in a defining moment to create impactful strategic solutions. We must campaign and engage everyone especially our sisters and brothers who are feeling hopeless. Teach the value of voter registration, the power of our vote and help them get to the polls. It is critical that we remove Trump from office so a competent and decent administration can strategically address a national plan for racialized oppression through reparations and a national plan to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

We must get the country healthy and protected while we rebuild the economy from the perspective of Black equity.

We must work from the bottom up not just starting with the middle class. We are strongest when all Black lives are included and investments are strategically made in building healthy neighborhoods. Start with the impact of redlining to disrupt generational poverty and trauma, low educational attainment and the legacies of incarceration.

Something suprising about you? My family and close friends know but others may not is that I can straight get down in the kitchen. I have a patent on gravy, whether its smothered pork chops, chicken, tri tip. Louisiana dirty rice, okra, cabbage, beans/hocks are my thing. My favorites to bake are cake: carmel, red velvet, pound, carrot, chocolate; bread pudding, cookies and brownies. It is my love language and I truly miss our family Soulfood Sundays.

DR. DOROTHY WILBORN PEDIATRIC SPECIALIST, KAISER PERMANENTE Dr. Dorothy Wilborn is a native of Northern California. She received her undergraduate Bachelor of Sciences degree in Biological Sciences at University of California, Irvine.

Dr. Wilborn earned her medical degree at the University of Rochester School of Medicine, and she completed her pediatric residency at the University of Rochester Medical Center, in Rochester, New York.

Her passion for child advocacy began in college, as she provided tutoring and mentorship to elementary and high school students at Sacramento City College and U.C. Irvine summer academic programs. During her pediatric residency, she dedicated time to work in the Monroe County Foster Care clinic, where she addressed the unique health care needs of children living in foster care.

At the end of pediatric residency training she served as a medical missionary physician to underserved children and families at Banso Baptist Hospital in Cameroon, West Africa.

Dr. Wilborn is now enjoying her 20th year of Pediatric Practice with Kaiser Permanente, in her hometown of Sacramento where she also is a member of Calvary Christian Center.

In addition to her main pediatric practice, Dr. Wilborn is dedicated to child abuse awareness and prevention.

Dr. Wilborn’s community service work during her practice years has included serving in the Child Abuse Prevention

Seat of the Sacramento County Children’s Coalition and on the Sacramento County Child Protective Systems Oversight Committee. She also served on the Sacramento County Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect Team for several years.

Dr. Wilborn offered her expertise as a physician contributor to the on-line training on Child Abuse Identification and Reporting for California physicians, utilized by Kaiser Permanente physicians throughout both Northern and Southern California. She has provided educational sessions for her Pediatric, Family medicine, and Emergency medicine colleagues, as well as for U.C. Davis Medical Center Pediatric Residents and California Northstate University College of Medicine students, on the recognition, medical management and mandated reporting of suspected child abuse.

Dr. Wilborn worked with Dr. Michele Evans to develop and launch Child Abuse Services and Prevention Program (CASP) at Kaiser Permanente, Sacramento. Together, Drs. Wilborn and Evans established an electronic consultation system with expert workflows for the evaluation of suspected child abuse. Multi-disciplinary teams of CASP champions have been established to work together and provide expertise to care for children with suspected maltreatment. In addition to building the CASP program’s

infrastructure, vital partnerships with community and law enforcement agencies were established.

CASP has received several service awards and recognitions, including Kaiser Permanente’s prestigious Dr. Sidney Garfield Exceptional Contribution award for innovation and mission driven spirit to care for pediatric patients, community service awards from the Kaiser Permanente African American Professional Association, the Sacramento Kings, and the Child Abuse Prevention Center. In 2019, Dr. Wilborn and Dr. Evans were honored as Heroes of Human Services by the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors.

Dr. Wilborn is excited to recognize Dr. Evans for working diligently as the Medical Director of CASP, to expand CASP throughout all of Kaiser Permanente’s Northern California service areas.

Dr. Wilborn is happily married to her husband Michael, whom she refers to as her better half, and source of greatest support for her commitment to serving children and their families.

Vibrant Black-Eyed Pea Salad From Taste of Home This is a deliciously light and fresh-tasting twist on cucumber tomato salad. It takes me to the water’s edge, and begs to be served with fresh seafood. Substitute Greek kalamata olives for black olives if desired.

PREP: 30 MINS | TOTAL: 30 MINS | SERVINGS: 6 INGREDIENTS • 2 cans (15-1/2 ounces each) black-eyed peas, rinsed and drained • 2 cups grape tomatoes, halved • 1 each small green, yellow and red peppers, finely chopped • 1 small red onion, chopped • 1 celery rib, chopped • 2 tablespoons minced fresh basil DRESSING: • 1/4 cup red wine vinegar or balsamic vinegar • 1 tablespoon stone-ground mustard • 1 teaspoon minced fresh oregano or 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano • 3/4 teaspoon salt • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper • 1/4 cup olive oil DIRECTIONS

1. In a large bowl, combine peas, tomatoes, peppers, onion, celery and basil.

JAY KING: DETERMINED, TIRELESS, & COMMITTED ADVOCATE FOR BLACK BUSINESS

e rises each morning at 4 am and studies and evaluates the stock market. By 6:30 am, he works out followed by a mile and half walk.

He is done conditioning his “meat suit”, as he would call it, by 7:30 am. At 8 am he hosts his own morning radio podcast show. Once this half of his morning is complete, he showers, dresses, then he is off to do his part to make the world go round.

At around 11:30 am, President and CEO of the California Black Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Jay King takes his place to fight another day for small Black enterprises and KING HAS businesses. There is no doubt or A PASSION AND question about King’s mission as a A DRIVE TO MAKE chamber. He is demonstrative, he is SURE THAT DESPITE purposeful, and he can be a force to be reckoned with. “If there is any mission that I’m on as a chamber, it is to make financial literacy the conversation throughout our community. I believe that if we were more financially literate, it would help our business community, because what it would do, we wouldn’t just have to rely on support from the community, or people patronizing our businesses,” said King.

The most prolific topic of these times is the COVID-19 pandemic. I asked King about the impact that it may have had on the chamber and its members. King gave some incredibly unique insights.

“Initially it was debilitating because it literally stopped everything in its tracks. What it did was shine a light on America and the inequities that exist in America. Americans of African descent, African Americans, American descendants of slaves, whatever you want to call us, black people, we’ve been marginalized to the degree that it’s almost natural for us.

I think America got a chance to see how unfair it’s been to the original American. It also opened our eyes to see how weak we are economically. The African American small business man or woman is probably the weakest engine in the country due to a myriad of things from racism and bigotry, slavery, segregation and of course discriminatory banking practices.”

King credits his drive to help others to his late mother, she once told him that you get more from your giving than you do for getting. Through it all, King maintains a philosophy of life. Homeownership is the best tool for all Americans to build wealth.

Black Americans, however, have been excluded from accessing this tool due to discriminatory practices and policies that have permeated the nation’s housing system, many of which continue to this day.

Led by Executive Director Tia Boatman Patterson, the California Housing Finance Agency (CalHFA) serves as the state’s affordable housing lender and is working to right some of these wrongs by addressing the continuum of housing from homelessness to homeownership.

“When you look at the numbers in California and across the country, Black people are a much higher percentage of the homeless population compared to the other races and we have a much lower percentage in terms of owning our own homes,” said Boatman Patterson, who was recently appointed to a second term as Executive Director of CalHFA, a position she has held since 2015.

CalHFA offers a variety of programs to address these issues. The Agency’s Multifamily Division partners with affordable housing developers to finance the creation and preservation of rental housing for families in danger of homelessness and those who make a slightly higher income but are still struggling to afford housing near where they work. Meanwhile, CalHFA’s Homeownership Division provides first mortgages and crucial down payment assistance to help low- and moderate-income California families buy their first home.

The Agency, which helped more than 13,000 Californians become firsttime homebuyers in the past year, is constantly expanding and refining its programs to make sure it is reaching as many people possible. Boatman Patterson leads those efforts using | 4 7 | T H E HU B MA G A Z I N E

With all of that experience, as well as her personal story growing up in rural Tulare, Boatman Patterson knows only too well the challenges that Black Californians face when it comes to housing and homeownership.

“The biggest barriers to homeownership are education and down payment assistance, so I’m hoping CalHFA can fill those gaps and help more Black and brown people become homeowners and start to build generational wealth,” Boatman Patterson said.

CalHFA’s down payment assistance program used $214 million to help to those 13,000 families from across the state over the past year, 8% of them Black and 53% of them Latinx.

The program provides up to 3.5% of the purchase price as a silent second mortgage so that homebuyers who have good credit and can afford their monthly bills but haven’t been able to save up, can use that money for a down payment.

CalHFA has been working to get the word out through the network of private lenders it partners with, and through a new Black Homeownership marketing campaign, which is focusing on strategic community partnerships with organizations such as Sacramento Cultural Hub. “One of the things we have found is that Black and brown folks don’t always go to a major bank when they are looking to get a mortgage or get information on how to buy a home,” said Boatman Patterson. “They will go to a mortgage broker or a real estate agent or just ask a friend they know that owns a home. That is why we need to be strategic with how we get information out to the community.

“Every beauty shop that I go into and every barber shop that I go into, I see the Sacramento Cultural Hub. So it is things like that.”

Another good source of information is housing counseling agencies, which are certified by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). These agencies help people who may be in danger of foreclosure or eviction, or people who are interested in learning about what it takes to buy and maintain a home.

CalHFA is working on a brand-new program to provide $50 million to counseling programs all over the state so that they can build capacity and provide free sessions to Californians.

The Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency (SHRA) is observing its 80th anniversary.

The agency administers the federal public housing program for Sacramento. Here’s a blurb from a statement SHRA published last August: “Through strategic partnerships, our team serves a diverse and growing population in need of affordable housing and supportive programs and services, to help them achieve a better life. The work SHRA does is changing lives by providing residents with hope, dignity, and opportunity.”

Early last March, I was given the opportunity to learn what the agency was all about firsthand, when I was invited to interview members of SHRA’s team.

As I drove to their offices in downtown Sacramento during that sunny morning, I didn’t realize that I would be conducting what will most likely be my final face-to-face interviews of 2020!

After talking to Williams, I think his picture should pop up when you Google “change agent.” He’s also a man of faith, and you can believe me when I say that Williams literally moves heaven and earth to accomplish his as his team’s goals at SHRA. But if you want to stay on Williams’s good side, don’t forget the “Roderick” when you’re calling his name!

My first chat was with La Shelle Dozier, SHRA’s executive director. As we greeted each other on that pre-COVID morning, Dozier offered a handshake. At the end of our time together, as we stood up from the table in that conference room, she leaned in for a hug.

While far from standard business practice, ours had been a substantive, moving conversation. I’ve not spoken to Dozier since that day, but I believe each of us had a feeling that the other needed something more than just a handshake.

And between the handshake and the hug, Dozier spoke with a palpable zeal about her phenomenal team and their work in Northern California. It had been a long time since I had been so moved during an interview.

MAKING POSITIVE PROGRESS FOR AFRICAN AMERICANS THROUGH ART

wenty-six years ago, Founder & Owner, Shonna McDaniels had a vision to gather ethnic artists, the fashioning of clay, and stories untold about our people, in one place. The Sojourner Truth African Heritage Museum, Sacramento’s first ever African American museum, offers a plethora of visuals, sounds, and yes, sometimes even a touch for museum visitors. In this particular museum, the messages conveyed encapsulates the beauty of the African American culture.

At the entrance of the museum you will be met with the image of the Sankofa bird, pronounced (SAHN-ko-fa). According to Sankofa.com, the “Sankofa” is a metaphorical symbol used by the Akan people of Ghana generally depicted as a bird with its head turned backward taking an egg from its back.

It expresses the importance of reaching back to knowledge gained in the past and bringing it into the present in order to make positive progress. The relevance of this symbol is so appropriate for what McDaniels set out to accomplish when she opened Sojourner.

McDaniels just recently announced that she has received substantial funding to expand the museum with over 2500 square feet of new space. In November 2020, McDaniels is approved for an additional 1500 square feet. In the new spaces she will be featuring new exhibits and telling the stories of a variety of historical Black Leaders from Sacramento, living and posthumously. One of the new exhibits, in which she is especially fond of, is in honor of the historical figure, “Sara Baartman”. In 19th Century France, Sara Baartman was a black woman with a protuberant buttock and was exploited and racially ridiculed in freak shows. The then narrative only added to the suffering of black women. This new exhibit will open a conversation and bring awareness to black girls and women about reclaiming their bodies and having positive body images.

For black women, Sara Baartman symbolizes the necessity to re-define beauty for themselves and not allow a society of a Caucasian persuasion, to define beauty for them.

The Arts have endless possibilities. No matter what genre or processes, it says different things for different people. Art, in its purest form, transmits timeless messages intended by the artist or artists. As an artist, muralist, and an art teacher, McDaniels understands first-hand the significance and allure of the Arts.

She has a self-awareness of her essential purpose in life. “I refer to myself as a divine spirit that’s here in the universal for the moment to impact and create change on every level that I possibly can,” said McDaniels. She recalls as a young girl growing up being raised by a single mother, that she began to show promise as an artist. “I came into this world with a brush in my hand,” said McDaniels. What was most relevant FALL | 5 3 | T H E HU B MA G A Z I N E

for her was that her mother recognized her gift for painting.

Her mother would frequently take her to black art galleries or anything that had to do with the Arts in order to cultivate those gifts in her. She strongly urges the parents of her art students to cultivate their skills and talents that they may have.

“I automatically know it when I see it if a child has that skill and that talent, If a child is interested in the visual arts, I tell them (parents), bring them to me!” she exclaimed.

It is McDaniels’ personal mission to teach children and elders more about their history than just about slavery. She wants them to know that they came from greatness and all through her museum is reflective of that. Sadly, too many African American children and adults alike, do not know enough about black history. It is imperative for people of color to tell their own stories and pass them down from generation to generation. As a little girl she used to do many sketches of Sojourner Truth, not knowing then just how powerful an image she was. She was attracted to her strong facial features, her clothing, and her head bonnet and she knew Sojourner was a courageous woman. McDaniels felt that somehow, someday Sojourner would further impact her life. Fast forward to when she first received her 501c3 for the museum, it was inevitable to name the museum after her.

Sacramento is hosting what is called “Wide Open Walls” Festival in September. Selected artists paint murals as high as 30 feet on the sides of the city’s buildings. Historically, black muralist has been overlooked to be invited to participate, until recent. Shonna McDaniels has been invited for the second time to paint a beautiful image. In 2019, she painted a mural of a Ndebele Woman of South Africa. The mural is at 3217 MLK Blvd. next to Flowers Fish Market. This month McDaniels will be painting an image of a young black southern belle girl. The location is TBA. She stated that the compensation is not much, and it is more important to her that images of beautiful black women are being painted in public spaces.

One of McDaniels’ greatest works of art is her family. Her husband Kelly of 23 years, her son Kelson and her daughter Nasara.

many successful career pursuits which inspired her to want her own Cannabis business. She has gone from working in a call center in Los Angeles, to being a Marketing Director for the West Africa Enlightenment Foundation, and then ultimately to becoming a business owner. One of her pursuits led her to West Africa remotely in 2014, which was during the devastating outbreak of the Ebola outbreak. Totimeh served in the African Enlightenment Watch program where she participated in a campaign about proper handwashing and other standard precautions to prevent the spread of disease. In 2017, Totimeh was physically in West Africa devoting this time to implement an educational plan for the children of Monrovia, Liberia.

BLACK-WOMAN OWNED BUSINESS: AEQUILIBRIUM CANNABIS DELIVERY

f there is ever a spirit of an entrepreneur, Naweh Totimeh possesses it. Since she was a little girl, she did not have visions of sugar plum fairies, she had visions of becoming a business owner. In July 2019, at the age of 37, Ms. Totimeh became the President and Founder of Aequilibrium Cannabis Delivery, soon to be a Cannabis dispensary. Totimeh was born in San Francisco, California. She is third generation Liberian.

Her parents are originally from Liberia, West Africa. Although Totimeh was born and raised in the U.S, she sincerely claims that she is 100% Liberian. “I was American born, but you can’t tell me that, I was born in Liberia like my sisters, raised by two young adults that came over here to get their masters.” she said in jest and with a smile.

When her family moved to Sacramento, Totimeh was raised in the Valley High Community. At the age of 16, she worked as a youth coordinator in the G Parkway Apartment complex community center (now called the Franklin Villas). She has had | 5 4 | T H E HU B MA G A Z I N E

Totimeh is currently an equity applicant with the Sacramento Core program. She entered as a marketing consultant focusing on equity strategic partnership. She is excited that the core program will afford her, and other equity applicants, the opportunity to obtain licensing to own a retail storefront dispensary in the city of Sacramento. She states that with her delivery and dispensary business she will be able to contribute revenues to Sacramento’s Cannabis and economy and give back to the community from which she came. “I plan on when I apply for that RFP (request for proposal) and gain a dispensary. I’m putting back into 95823 and to the whole city of Sacramento through different work force development programs and different community outreach to give back for economic stability for our black and brown communities.” Totimeh said.

While waiting for her full licensing processes to be complete with the state of California, she has entered into a joint venture with a Bay Area company to begin a delivery retail business. A team under her direction will be delivering recreational Cannabis to the homes of clients.

Since the onset of COVID, Totimeh has been met with the challenge to obtain a location for her dispensary. She will need well over $100,000 to secure a location. She will not be able to apply for her dispensary until a location lease or purchase is finalized. Totimeh is not discouraged, she is confident that all will come together. She said initially when COVID hit, there was a pause, “We had to re-forecast our business goals and business training.” Totimeh said. COVID may have caused some glitches, but she states that the COVID has allowed the Cannabis business to blast off. So, in due time, she will have a location and her business will thrive.

Totimeh is a driven young woman, she has recently been contracted with the Greater Sacramento Urban League for the 2020 census for the “Make Black Count” Sacramento campaign. This contract also links her to the State Census campaign. As a young black female entrepreneur, Totimeh has insight for herself far beyond her years. “I see myself hitting high heights, being very successful, definitely taking off partnering with other core equity black individuals or businesses, sticking together, maybe we can all purchase big pieces of land together and come up with a whole hub, have a new black wall street Sacramento, those are the things I would like to see here, in the nation, or anywhere for black individuals.” she proclaimed.

Totimeh is sincere as she advises other young black women entrepreneurs who may want to enter the Cannabis industry.

“They have to be finishers, you have to be somebody who

DID YOU KNOW? finishes something, you have to be somebody that stands for something, you have to be somebody who wants something.” she advised. This business is not for the faint at heart and she continued to say, “You can’t be a meek satisfactory type of person, if a meek satisfactory person, you need to stay in a weak satisfactory world.”

Naweh Totimeh is sure that some pros to being in the Cannabis business are that it can lead to generational wealth, being successful can bring financial stability and it can create economic stability in your communities. An obvious con is that some people think that you are just selling marijuana, especially in her culture because they want to see her only in corporate America, but at the end of the day, it is just an opinion.

“His Story:” the version of events from any one given point of observation; usually that of the victor or the one in power, or the one lucky enough to have possession of the microphone. “His story” is told by many people and from many perspectives. History is often written to project a particular agenda or to embody a desired emotional state.

Generally, history is only neutral if no one stands to gain from the telling of it. How often is that ever the case?

If one desires raw honesty and a fully comprehensive view, then a broader perspective must be researched…. and research means work…. Time and effort on one’s own part.

It is rather apparent that human history is full of horrors, the details of which are likely inappropriate for youthful innocence.

Sensitivity is surely required, but then, so is honesty. After all, these days parents subject their kids to R-rated movies and horror films with modern CGI technology that is very realistic… unlike the tin-foil monsters of my own childhood nightmares.

Kids today are exposed to video games that are hideous in my personal opinion. So for sensible, responsible adults, I do believe there is a way to convey honesty to children without the most gruesome details, thereby lending a fuller view of our nation’s historical reality. I’ll relate a personal example to illustrate the point. | 5 5 | T H E HU B MA G A Z I N E

I recall in 6th grade one question on our history test was: Who discovered America? At age 10, I distinctly remember writing on my test paper with a measure of annoyance: “I realize the answer you expect for this question is, Columbus, but that is not entirely true because what he discovered was a continent that had already been discovered and was inhabited by millions of other people. Perhaps you might write the question differently?” Kids are oft-times much smarter than they are given credit for. By 10 years of age I already knew the perspective of the Native American, the African American, as well as the European American and that knowledge, did no damage to my cerebral cortex. Nor did it make me hate my country, or hate white people. Actually, at that point in time, our nation was in the middle of the Civil Rights Movement. I was quite literally living history.

Kids can handle more of the truth than we present to them.

They can especially handle it if they know the horrors of the past in context with the righteous efforts our citizenry continually makes toward the idealized goal of justice and equality. Life is never perfect, but the pursuit of perfection is always a noble endeavor. n

BLACK SMALL BUSINESS ASSOCIATION OF CALIFORNIA PRESENTS THE TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM FOR SMALL BUSINESSES

T

here is a movement underway to help Blackowned small businesses struggling in the COVID19 economy. Spearheaded by the Black Small Business Association of California (BSBA), in partnership with the City of Sacramento and local small business experts, the Technical Assistance Program (TAP) will help Black-owned small businesses successfully navigate the economic minefield of COVID-19.

To the surprise of no one, Black business owners have been devastated by economic losses associated with the mandated business closures and stay at home orders.

An economic analysis by Robert Fairlie of the University of California, Santa Cruz, found that Black-owned businesses have been hit the hardest by the coronavirus pandemic. Fairlie notes that the number of working black business owners decreased significantly as a result of the virus, going from 1.1 million in February to 640,000 in April. This represents a loss of approximately 41 percent of black business owners in the U.S. In contrast, only 17 percent of white small business owner have faced the same losses.

That seems on brand for America in 2020.

eyes can be attributed to the preexisting conditions of systemic racism and economic inequality. These underlying societal diseases t have plagued Black people in this country for eons and the most egregious culprits that weaken Black-owned small businesses – barriers to capital and credit, and a lack of capacity and scale – are familiar and enduring. These obstacles, in conjunction with the few, if any, opportunities to seek and receive the technical assistance needed to help these businesses withstand the loss of income, have made it nearly impossible for Black-owned businesses to survive during this pandemic.

That’s where TAP comes in. This innovative and collaborative program will provide Black-owned small businesses with the tools they need to survive during COVID-19. Led by BSBA, a professional organization focused on providing advocacy and resources to Blackowned small businesses, TAP will offer seminars on a number of topics, including small business planning and organizational structure, social media marketing, legal compliance, branding, and marketing. TAP will also offer a full service “Business Essential Services” program to help existing businesses stay afloat, and cultivate burgeoning entrepreneurs as they put their natural talents and skills to work by starting a new business. As with most things in the Black community, saving Black-owned

businesses will take a village; thus, BSBA has recruited a number of collaborative partners and small business experts to provide a transformative experience for TAP participants.

BSBA and its partners bring over 100 years of shared experience to their TAP collaboration. These experts include local nonprofits such as Beyond the Village, which offers career planning, technology training and job creation to veterans and adults over 55, and Pryor & Pryor Consulting, which supports Black entrepreneurs through targeted communication and digital advocacy.

Seminars for TAP participants will include educational presentations about business operation from Diversif-I Education Group, and legal compliance from Reed Williams law firm. Maximum Reach 4 Economic Equity, Career Path Development Group, and MoorePark Enterprises will provide development and supportive services designed for small businesses, while Sac Black Biz will provide social media training.

While the economic implications of the coronavirus pandemic have been especially devastating for Black businesses, our entrepreneurs are down now, but they are not out. The Black community is resilient and

has a prevailing entrepreneurial spirit that has carried generations through the most horrific atrocities in human history. Black-owned businesses are not only needed; they are essential because they provide both critical services in underserved communities and serve as primary sources of jobs and income in communities of color. To survive this unprecedented emergency, we as a society will have to tap into our collective creativity and combine our community resources. By design, TAP models this because it is intentionally leveraging the knowledge and skills of its local partners who understand the Black community, and they are working together to help Black-owned small businesses pivot and prevent permanent closures.

BSBA and its partners are ready to circle the wagons and help Black small businesses survive COVID-19, and flourish in its aftermath. DON’T BE FOOLED BY TOBACCO AND VAPE INDUSTRY PETITIONS

ast month, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a new law that ends the sale of menthol and flavored tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, little cigars and menthol cigarettes. With this landmark law, Governor Newsom and California lawmakers are sending a message to tobacco and vape industries that their deadly history of targeting of kids, African Americans and other vulnerable populations is finally coming to an end. California is once again leading the fight against tobacco and vape use – the number one cause of preventable death – and setting a powerful example that other states should follow.

These are flavored products that are banned by SB793

The 58-1 Assembly vote and 34-0 Senate vote underscore both the tremendous level of bipartisan support and how popular this measure is. The tobacco industry should heed these votes and comply with the law. Unfortunately, tobacco and vape industry special interest groups have now launched a confusing petition campaign to overturn this important law. Their main goal is to intentionally stall implementation. The industry is spending millions to ensure that the state law cannot take effect until it is approved by voters in the Nov 2022 election. If they receive enough signatures and the ballot were to qualify, tobacco and vape industry interest groups will generate $1.2 billion in profits from the sale of menthol cigarettes alone during the two years that California’s implementation of SB 793’s flavor ban is delayed. That’s two years of making $50 million per month, or $1.64 million per day, while approximately 40,000 more high school kids will start using e-cigarettes (campaign for tobacco free kids). --Blood money earned from potential illness and death of Black and Brown people.

“Since day one, tobacco industry has fed Black and Brown communities nothing but lies - spending millions to deceive people about how addictive their products truly are, mystifying the risks of using e-cigarettes, and the biggest lie of them all: that their candy-flavored products don’t

hook kids,” said Carol McGruder, Co-Chair of the African American Tobacco Control Leadership Council.

“Their decades of racist and predatory targeting of Black people with mentholated tobacco products has resulted in cycles of generational addiction and death. Thankfully, the Legislature and the Governor saw through their dirty tricks when they passed SB 793; and if it ever comes time for Californians to vote on the cynical ballot referendum they’ll see right through the cloud of lies too.”

Even more troubling is the fact that smoking doubles your risk of getting sicker from COVID. “A new UCSF study points out (Adams et al., 2020) that vaping and smoking put young adults at much greater risk for COVID-19” said Dr. Phil Gardiner, Co-Chair of the African American Tobacco Control Leadership Council. “Stanford researchers published an article showing youth/young adult (13-24 years old) e-cig ever users are 5 times more likely to be diagnosed with COVID-19; and past 30-day e-cig and cigarette users are 7 times more likely to be diagnosed!

(Halpren-Felsher et al., 2020). Be appraised that there are over 15,000 kid friendly flavors available in the marketplace (https://www.flavorshookkids.org/ 2018). Even more problematic is that the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) half-steps in addressing this issue. Heralded last fall as a full flavor ban, subsequently the flavor ban devolved into a series of loopholes that you could drive a convoy of tractor trailers through.

You can still buy e-cigs with all their kid friendly flavors that are refillable, like Suorin® and Smok®; you can still buy disposable e-cigs, like Puff Bars®; and there is the possibility that some products may return to the market, with FDA approval. And to make matters worse, you can still buy menthol and tobacco flavored Juuls® and other non-disposable tobacco products at the local level. “We just took a major step forward with the passage of SB 793.

Let’s not start regressing on the local level after this historic achievement. Said Dr. Gardiner Passage of legislation restricting the sale of flavored tobacco products in California is critical to the health of Californians and to protect the next generation from a lifetime of addiction. Unfortunately, a ballot to repeal this law is being pushed by the industry solely to protect their profits at the expense of our health. The tobacco industry, specifically Philip Morris, makers of Marlboro Menthol and iQOS electronic cigarettes, is touting their petition as a “youth prevention initiative” that will stop youth from gaining access to tobacco products, which is

DID YOU KNOW? a lie. Any petition backed by the tobacco industry should be checked for facts. That is why we say “think before you ink”. Before you sign anything, you should be asking why would the makers of the most popular and profitable cigarette brand want to “prevent smoking”?

It is also important to note that flavored tobacco bans are being adopted and implemented throughout California, the United States and internationally. In California, there are currently 81 bans and counting. Local cities and counties should continue passing these important policies until the state’s law goes into effect. In addition, local jurisdictions can pass even stronger policies than the state law, like including all loose-leaf tobacco and all cigars and that do not penalize or criminalize youth, but places the onus on enforcement on the adults who illegally sell to minors. Contact your local health department to get involved with local organizations or for more information.

With the passage of the state’s law and local laws the SOL Project (Saving Our Legacy, African Americans for Smoke Free Safe Places, realizes that smokers need support to quit. “It takes most people 7-9 times to stop smoking, but it sometimes takes up to 11 times for Black people even though that may not smoke as often”, said Twlia Laster, SOL Project Director. LAMILLS GARRETT RUNNING FOR ROSEVILLE CITY COUNCIL

A

t an incredibly young age, quintessential values were instilled in Roseville’s City Council hopeful, LaMills Garrett.

LaMills credits his, in his own words, “fabulous upbringing” to garrettforroseville.com being raised by a single mom in Columbia, South Carolina. His mom worked hard to push her kids towards having more than what she did. She instilled in him self-love, a sense of pride, and appreciation for what they did have. Mr. Garrett was a product of an all-black High School; his teachers were black, and they challenged him daily to be more than he thought he could be based on the environment that he was in.

Right out of high school, he enrolled into the University of Tennessee. Regretfully, he dropped out, but then enlisted into the U.S. Airforce to earn money for school. Studying computer science 6-year career in the Air Force led to him being recruited to Hewlett Packard in Colorado. He started out testing software, then software development, and successfully was promoted to computer programmer.

Garrett worked at Hewlett Packard until 2017. With some experience there in finance, he was moved into executive roles. His career skyrocketed when he arrived at Roseville, CA. Mr. Garrett will admit himself that he does not consider himself a politician. He says that community is his politics.

He is a consummate advocate for people. His genuine affinity for people is how he is able to take on such roles as, Political Action Chair for the Greater NAACP, Board of Directors for Placer Food Bank, and he also cherished his 1 year stint with the Roseville Charter Review Commission. He stated that his work there propelled him to run for a city council seat. The Charter is basically the constitution for the city, establishing laws and bylaws for Roseville. Mr. Garrett is proud to say that he was integral in setting up the city’s re-districting commission, securing laws like stopping cities from creating boundaries for districts that only benefit the elected individuals.

“I was key as a part of the re-districting commission to determine what the new rules or the new laws were going to be,” Garrett said.

The priority now is to think about how the city can recover from COVID-19. His focus will be to make sure there are good paying jobs that are accessible to people, to make sure there is affordable housing for all Roseville residents, and to address homelessness. Mr. Garrett does not want the city to corral citizens into a concentrated area intended for just the economically disadvantaged. Roseville has been hit hard by COVID-19 with big losses in tax revenues from their largest | 6 0 | T H E HU B MA G A Z I N E

tax revenue businesses. The #1 tax revenue business is the Roseville Auto Mall and 2nd is the Roseville Westfield Galleria.

Garrett anticipates a seat on the council in November 2020. He is confident that once in office he wants to see projects that have not yet been considered. For example, he wants the city to think about creating a Downtown Core, as such, to add a cultural interest. He would like to see an expansion of Amtrak service and to bring Light Rail to Roseville. He envisions a true Downtown where people from all over can come for evening entertainment, museums, and performing arts.

Garrett is the first African American to ever run for council in Roseville. He said it, will be easy to remain non-biased from party politics. “I focus on the issues, I come with a perspective I think that most council members haven’t. Working with the council members is an easy thing to do, I think the most important thing is me being transparent, honest and driving the values that I bring to the table,” said Garrett.

LaMills Garrett will incorporate his love for his family when taking on the city of Roseville. He shares custody three children younger, ages 10, 11, and 14. He has three grown children outside the home including one of his former basketball players he took custody of from Louisiana. LaMills has been humbled in all that he learned from his older children and is enjoying leveraging some of that wisdom with his younger kids.

Mr. Garrett is now excited to bring the perspective from his childhood, discipline from the military, and business savvy from 20 years in the corporate world to the Roseville City Council. n
