Welcome Back!!

What an exciting month it's been! With our relaunch in July, The Hub Capricorn Coast has been welcomed back into our community with wide open arms. We truly appreciate your support. To date we've had over 650 reads of Edition 1 which is really exciting for us to see!

We celebrated our relaunch with a casual Mingle & Cuppa at Daniel Park on the 1st July. Thank you to those who joined us. It was a lovely morning where some wonderful new connections were made and casual networking took place. Our next event will be on Monday 1st August at 9am at Lioness Park at Lammermoor. We intend to hold these casual events each month so that we can all get together over a casual cuppa - everyone is welcome, so please join us if you are able to!

We are pleased to launch “The Giving Fund” this month! We wanted a unique way to be able to give back to our local community and support those who may need a little extra support during a challenging time. The concept of The Giving Fund is that donations can be made in either dollar value contributions or businesses may wish to donate a voucher for a class or a session or offer a part discount to a workshop or retreat.

This concept came about because we know sometimes when the chips are down and you feel like you could benefit from going to something like a yoga class or a day retreat, the funds may not necessarily be there for you to participate. The idea is that the fund will be able to support those who need some soul therapy when they need it most. This is our version of paying it forward.

The way the fund will work is each month the community will be invited to nominate someone who could use a little extra support either by private messaging us or emailing thehubcapricorncoast@gmail.com We will assess the nominations and see which applications we are able to support. An update will be provided in the following month’s edition. Names of recipients will remain private and confidential, however we will let the community know how we distributed funds that month. For example, in July we gifted a pilates class, a massage and a breathwork session to 3 community members.

Throughout the year we will also be arranging events that will support The Giving Fund as well. Our first one will be in support of Mental Health Week, which is our Walk for Wellbeing. More details about the walk can be found on the following page.

Sunday 16th October!

Sunday 16th October will see our first Walk for Wellbeing event as part of Mental Health Week. Registrations will open at 7am at Farnborough Beach with the walk kicking off at 8am. It will be a leisurely walk from Farnborough Beach through to Kemp Hill. There will be rest breaks along the way, with an opportunity to take a breather and have some morning tea. The walk will conclude at approximately 11.30am at the Kemp Hill BBQ area with a BBQ and everyone is invited to stay and relax for the afternoon with some family activities.

Karlene Pass is the heart and soul behind Sacred Soul Revolution. Using her own life experiences over the years, her business has emerged into a sacred healing space for many.

She is dedicated to creating and holding space in a way for her clients that they feel seen, held, loved, heard and witnessed.

Her personal healing journey began after leaving a relationship with an alcoholic partner who was abusive and violent. Despite trying to get help from many channels, it appeared to them that she wasn’t in trauma, that she was handling things ‘pretty well’.

As a child and growing up in India we practiced some Yoga at school and home.

Before I was educated in power in relationships, I thought violence was when there would be blood or physical signs that happened to others. Violence is more than that. It’s complex. What is Gut Health and Why is it Important?

"Gut health” describes the function and balance of bacteria in the many parts of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) including the mouth, esophagus, stomach, intestines, and colon. In an ideal situation, the organs all work together to breakdown and digest food without discomfort, allowing nutrients to enter the bloodstream and flow throughout out body.

Many factors can influence gut health including poor dietary habits and lack of diversity in the diet, excessive alcohol and caffeine intake, some pharmaceutical medications, chronic stress, antibiotic use, lack of sleep, food intolerances or allergies, environmental exposures, poor eating habits, and more!

Some signs and symptoms that suggest your gut might need some love include typical digestive symptoms such as bloating, gas or burping, reflux or heartburn, irregular bowel patterns, nausea or vomiting, abdominal pain or discomfort, and food intolerances, and other symptoms such as chronic fatigue, low immunity, skin conditions (acne, eczema, psoriasis), nutritional deficiencies, hormonal imbalances, hay fever or asthma, allergies, mental health conditions, and more!

What are my top tips to improve your gut health?

Start by getting back to the basics!

1.

Eat a diverse nutrient-rich diet with plenty of whole foods, fibrous foods, healthy fats, prebiotics, probiotics, and quality proteins. Our gut microbiome thrives on diversity.

Aim for 30 different plant sources per week - Including vegetables, fruit, nuts, seeds, grains, legumes, herbs, spices, and herbal teas.

2.

Limit highly processed foods or foods high in trans or saturated foods.

Aim for an 80/20 approach – 80% wholefoods, 20% soul foods.

3.

Cut down on your sugar, caffeine and alcohol intake.

4.

Manage your stress, especially at meal times. Avoid eating in a stressed or anxious state or take a few big deep breathes before you start your meal.

5. Practice mindful eating & chew your food properly. Avoid eating on the run or in front of your computer at work, sit down and take your time to eat.

6. Drink plenty of clean water - at least 2L per day.

7. Move your body daily – any movement is good movement!

8. Get plenty of restful sleep – aim for 78 hours per night (if you can!).

Where do I even begin?

In this article I hope to give a crash course outlining the common roles of mental health providers and what they offer, where to begin your search, and some suggestions about how to find the right therapist for you.

Counsellor: A qualified professional that utilizes “talk therapy” to help create a dialogue around present life challenges and personal distress, and work collaboratively with the client to formulate goals and strategies to overcome these hurtles and improve overall wellbeing.

Psychotherapist: This term is also unregulated in Australia and can be used interchangeably with counsellor. However, the title can carry a separate definition and approach.

Dogs are good for us. The conclusions of ten research studies involving data from nearly 4,000,000 people showed that engaging with a dog can help us to live longer. The calming effect of petting a dog can lower stress hormones, reduce blood pressure, heart disease and the risk of death. It’s is also good for the dog.

No wonder dogs have been used for therapeutic purposes since the middle ages when they were used in Europe to help improve the health of people with nervous conditions and mental illness. In the mid 1800’s, Florence Nightingale recommended the use of small animals in hospitals for their health-giving properties. In the early 1900’s, psychiatrist, Sigmund Freud was using his own Chow Chow dog to facilitate connection with his patients.

And it is not just dogs; cats have also been shown to improve the health and wellbeing of their owners. Horses were used by the Greeks and by physicians in the 17th Century to aid patient well-being. In recent times, the use of animals for therapy is being increasingly explored and even keeping fish has been shown to increase the self-management skills of children with diabetes. The rehabilitation of prisoners has been improved by their training and caring for animals ranging from dogs to farm animals.

Which is why our Therapy Dog Walking and Social group which meets monthly is for “people with certified assistance dogs, people with non-certified assistance dogs, and anyone who find dogs therapeutic, whether they own a dog or not”.
