Hello & Welcome!

I hope that you love our brand-new look and format as much as we do! With times changing so rapidly it was time to bring our body, mind and soul-focussed publication back to life so that residents of the Capricorn Coast could have a one-stop point of reference for health and wellness information.

We’re hoping that The Hub Capricorn Coast will become your go-to guide for keeping up to date with the latest workshops events, retreats, yoga classes, breathwork, meditation classes and so much more!

We are blessed with an abundance of talented therapists, practitioners, teachers and healers in our community, many who work away quietly in the background. It’s our intention to start to introduce some of them to you so that you can learn more about the work that they are doing and how it may be of benefit for you.

From a tiny seed of an idea of bringing The Hub Capricorn Coast back to life in a new format, to finally seeing it come to fruition, it’s been a hectic yet rewarding month. There have been many learning curves, laughs, tears and excitement going on in the background. This is just the beginning. We have plenty of exciting things to share with you over the coming months.

It has been a wonderful journey this past month bringing new life back into a much-loved publication.

Watching people’s excitement and enthusiasm has helped to keep the home fires burning during the production process of our new look.

I am not a journalist by any means, but someone who has a lifelong love for writing and communicating thoughts and ideas. Keeping a pulse on what’s happening in our local community is one of my favourite things to do. I also thoroughly enjoy connecting people to modalities, services and businesses that may benefit them.

Our new look format will be available online for FREE for everyone to access at their leisure. I hope that you enjoy our very first edition of the relaunched The Hub. Sit back with a cuppa as there are lots of fabulous articles to tuck into this month.

We have some wonderful people for you to meet who we have interviewed over the past month and have their stories to share, some helpful tips to stay healthy this winter, moon musings for the month ahead with our own local moon woman, our FREE event directory, our FREE business directory – there’s so much for you to explore!

Making Simple Changes to Improve Your Overall Health

Meet one of our local Naturopath's Caitlin Buttenshaw After the events of the past couple of years, many people are wanting to glean a better understanding of their own health.

Naturopathy is a great way to start making some small yet powerful changes to diet and lifestyle that can have an incredible effect on your overall wellbeing, mood and health.

Local Yeppoon woman Caitlin Buttenshaw has always been interested in health, nutrition and movement. Growing up in an active family meant she was always on the go. Her interest in naturopathy piqued when she saw a naturopath for her own health concerns and noticed a significant improvement in her health within a few short months after making some simple diet and lifestyle modifications accompanied with herbal medicine.

Picnicking Through a Pandemic

What does a travel agent do amid a worldwide pandemic? Start their own picnic business of course! Meet Ash Smith the face behind Coastal Picnics Co. Ash was stood down from her job as a travel agent in 2020 leaving her with plenty of time on her hands. When eating out was not an option when organising the celebrations for her sister’s 21st birthday, she began looking for an alternative

solution. She came up with the idea of creating a picnic in the backyard of her family home.

In the process of styling and organising her sister’s celebrations, so too began her love of setting up cute picnics for others to enjoy the vibrancy of the great outdoors we are blessed with here on the Capricorn Coast. This has now turned into a blossoming business for her where she can utilise her creative flair in styling and more recently making the perfect props to accompany the delectable picnic fare.

Originally from Victoria, Ash and her family moved to the Coast for a change of scenery and a change of lifestyle about 3 years ago. A love of the beach and the beautiful weather we have all-year-round inspired her to take her picnic business outdoors taking full advantage of our coastal lifestyle. With an array of unique spots to choose from, one of the hardest things for her clients is selecting the idyllic one to picnic in.

Transformation with Jody It's a Shaw Thing!

Supporting others in reclaiming the parts of themselves that they have previously left behind in order to survive is what drives Holistic Counsellor Jody Shaw to work with women in mentoring them to navigate their way through life. 4 Tips to Keep You Well This Winter Our immune system is a complex network of proteins and cells that work together to protect us against microbial pathogens (viral, bacterial, fungal, etc.) that we come into contact with daily. Our immune system helps our body to prevent infections, reacts against foreign substances and abnormal cells. Basic dietary and lifestyle modifications can help to support and strengthen our immune system, giving our bodies the best chance to fight off infections.

1. Up your intake of fruits, vegetables, herbs & spices!

Fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices are rich in vitamins and minerals, loaded with antioxidants and have antiinflammatory properties which help to modify immune responses and support a healthy immune system. Aim for 5 - 7 serves of colourful veggies and 2 - 3 serves of antioxidant rich fruit per day.

Add herbs and spices to your meals including thyme, rosemary, mint, sage, oregano, chives, cinnamon, cardamon, basil, turmeric, ginger, and dill or sip on herbal teas including echinacea, ginger, chamomile, dandelion, chicory root, passionflower, peppermint, lemon grass, hibiscus, and elderberry.

2. Enjoy the sunshine & boost your vitamin D levels.

Vitamin D helps to regulate the immune system by reducing inflammation and enhancing the function of immune cells that protect us against viral, bacterial and/or fungal pathogens. Aim for at least 15-30 minutes of direct sunlight per day.

3. Manage your stress Stress can impact our immune system’s ability to fight off antigens, which makes us more susceptible to infections. If you’re feeling stressed, try to implement a few practices into your daily routine to help calm your nervous system and clear your mind.

This could include meditation, practicing mindfulness, booking in for a massage, walking in nature, calling a friend, deep breathing, journaling, or taking some time out for yourself.

4. Prioritise sleep Adequate rest and sleep can help to reduce inflammation and enhance the ability of your immune cells to fight off viruses and other pathogens. If you can, aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night.

This lunar cycle the full moon lands in the sign of Capricorn. Capricorn brings in Earth energy, focusing on Structure, foundations and security. In Opposition, the Sun in Cancer brings in the element of water, asking us to trust our instincts, emotions and feelings.

The Capricorn-Cancer polarity is balancing these two energies between our attachments, love and where we nurture others (Cancer) and our achievements, goals and ambitions out in the world (Capricorn).

How can we integrate the two harmoniously in our lives?

Capricorn, who is ruled by Saturn (Known as the task master or “father” archetype) asks us to step up and take action on securing the foundations of our life and career, while the Sun in Cancer who is ruled by the Moon (Know as the Nurturing “mother” archetype) is calling us to integrate that with our home, family and the things that FEEL good emotionally and in our inner world.
