Your monthly message from the Editor

Hello and Welcome to August

Thank you for your patience again this month with the delay in getting this edition out to you. Sometimes life takes you away from the things you are most passionate about and I know that I am not the only one experiencing this at the moment. We are going through a phase of change as the energy shifts yet again. It’s a time to remember why we do the work that we do and to return to the practices that we know benefit our mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing.

Registrations for the Walk for Wellbeing are now open and those who register before the 31st August will receive an event t-shirt to wear on the day. You can read more details about this year ’ s Walk for Wellbeing in support of Queensland Mental Health week later in the magazine

As always we have amazing contributions from our local business owners sharing their knowledge and wisdom with you. Be sure to check these out

We are in search of a home for The Hub Lending Library so that it can be accessed more easily by you.

If you have any ideas or suggestions of somewhere that would be a suitable space, please get in touch. It is my intention that the library shouldn’t take up the time of the owner of the space as borrowing will be electronic and we will take care of returns etc We now have around 200 items in the library, so it would be great to get some of these out into the hands that need them, rather than sitting in storage.

Make sure you check out the event calendar this month and save it to your device There are some fantastic events being held in our community and I know that your support of these would be greatly appreciated. Even if you are not able to attend them, the act of sharing an event means a lot to the organisers holding the events.

I’ll keep this month short and sweet so that you can get to the goodness of what’s inside this edition. As always, if you have a story or would like anything covered in an upcoming edition, please reach out and get in touch

Hope the rest of your August is simply amazing!

Registrations Open for Walk for Wellbeing

Registrations for this year ’ s Walk for Wellbeing are now open. If you are going to join us on this year ’ s walk, be sure to register by 31st August to receive your event t-shirt to wear on the day.

Thank you to our Gold Sponsors Intra Mind and Lure Living and Bronze Sponsor Zest Health and Wellbeing for your support of this year ’ s event to help cover the cost of running such an event. Organising and bringing an event such as this to the community takes a lot of hours behind the scenes with many moving parts needing to be co-ordinated to make sure the event runs smoothly. So a huge thank you to these businesses who are showing their support this year.

Sunday 15th October will see registrations kick off at Farnborough Beach at 6am with the walk commencing at 7am, a water break at Ross Creek, morning tea at Lammermoor and a sausage sizzle at the conclusion at Kemp Hill around 10.30am.

The crew from Mr Perfect will be once again cooking up the sausages for our walkers. A huge thank you to the local Mr Perfect team for your support again. If you ’ re not aware, Mr Perfect is a men ’ s mental health support group who meet monthly to chat and support each other.

The aim of the walk is for members of the community to be able to take some time out to enjoy the fantastic scenery that we have on the Capricorn Coast and to utilise some of the fantastic walking paths that have been constructed for our use.

and to register yourself. We look forward to

ARE YOU BREATHING EFFICIENTLY?

Interest in breathwork has increased recently, in part due to the 2020 publication of James Nestor’s excellent book – Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art and the growing popularity of Wim Hof Breathing and other exercises and methods

There are exceptions, but most breathing exercises take only minutes to do

What about the other 23+ hours of the day? How should we breathe for good physical and mental health?

The subject is too big and complex to properly cover here, but here’s some useful tips:

Breathe deeply This does not mean taking big breaths, it means drawing air deep into the lungs instead of shallow chest breathing Breathing deeply into the lower lungs while upright, more alveoli (tiny air sacs) in the lung bases open up This exposes more surface area for gas exchange and allows more oxygen to diffuse into the bloodstream

Breathe through your nose wherever possible This allows filtration of particles and bacteria, increases humidity to moisture sensitive lung tissues, slowing of air flow which improves gas exchange efficiency, and stimulation of the parasympathetic nervous system which aids relaxation and allows the body to put more resources toward 'housekeeping' and repairs.

Breathe slowly. Slow breathing allows more time for carbon dioxide buildup in the blood, which stimulates the respiratory control centre to trigger breaths. With sufficient carbon dioxide, oxygen saturation of the blood is optimized with each inhalation and exhalation, improving gas exchange efficiency and oxygen levels in the tissues.

August Moon Musings

Your monthly guide to what's happening in the astrological world

The month of August brings us two full moons!! Along with a New moon in the middles so let’s strap in

Wednesday 2nd August at 4:32am AEST we welcome the Full Moon in the air sign of Aquarius. Emotional freedom may be a theme for you during this full moon.

Aquarius is the rebel of the zodiac and they have a need for freedom and space truly express themselves, and in the same breath it is just as important for them to be seen for who they truly are.

While our moon sits in the air sign of Aquarius, the sun is in it’s fiery opposition of Leo The balance of these two energies is about being authentic, feeling seen by those in our inner circle and true self expression!

Aquarius energy often favours the thinking mind over the feeling body so emotions could feel a little confusing during this time Sharing with your friends and talking things through can be very helpful to see things more clearly

Have a look at which house Aquarius rules in your chart to see where this might show up for you. This is a fixed energy sign so be wary of getting stuck in your own way of thinking and be open to new ideas

Fixed signs will feel this the most, Aquarius, Leo, Scorpio and Taurus! Also those with strong 11th house or Aquarius Sun, Moon and Rising.

Wednesday 16th August see ’ s the new moon in Leo hit the sky. This is not the comfort zone for the Leo as the Sun is her natural ruler so the emotional waters of the Moon can feel a little uncertain here

Creativity and play are more in alignment with this Leo energy so this is a wonderful time to get in touch with your creative passions and also your inner child.

While Leo can often crave the spotlight, what they truly desire is to be seen and full accepted There may be work to do around acceptance of your need for validation or fear if criticism and understand that your worth is not measured by what other people thin of you.

Leo radiates love, courage and play so lean into all these areas of your life during this lunation, Venus is also close by so Love and connection may be important for you at this time.

All these energies can help you tap into what ignites the fire within and helps you express yourself completely!

08

If you are setting intentions for the next cycle on this Moon, think about self expression, passion, play and fun What brings you joy in life and how can you bring more play into your goals?

Our fixed signs and those with a strong 5th house will feel this one, also the Leo sun, Moon and Rising signs

Our Second Full Moon of August on the 31st, see ’ s us in the watery energy of Pisces as we have just shifted into her opposite sign for Virgo Season

Pisces is sensitive, intuitive and very perceptive of their surroundings so be gentle with yourself during this time.

As a water sign, Pisces can be very in tune with the energy of others and it can be difficult to not take things to heart. Saturn is playing some influence here only a few degrees away from the moon so there may be a little more restriction around our emotions or possibly we become frustrated at

just how much emotion is going through, either way, self criticism is not helpful here so take a little time out find self compassion

Boundaries may also become important over this full Moon, slow down and take a beat before dying yes to everything and running yourself into the ground

It is ok to need some time alone to recharge and reset before your re-enter the energies of the world outside of you

Internal reflection is good over this time, feeling into your own patterns and stories and beginning to find the structure offered by the Sun in Virgo to release that which no longer serves you.

It is time to let go…..

What To Expect In An Introspective Hypnosis Session

Last month I wrote about what Introspective Hypnosis is This month I want to give some insight into what possibilities happen in a session

Anything is possible in the hypnosis sessions Healing of the body, relationships and changing life direction My clients have experienced past lives of theirs or others, see the future or even other dimensions or worlds, other planets, and beings Clients have seen heaven, God and angels and been with their loved ones that have crossed over Some have experienced famous people through the oneness of the Universe It is never surprising to me but it has been at times for my clients!

I do caution if you are an over analyser, you limit your experience. In hypnosis there is a saying, “paralysis by analysis’. You can do that later. It’s important to say the first thought or picture you see. The more you speak the more that you will experience.

I ask my clients to come with a series of questions that they want answers to. At the end of the session is when we take time to overview what came up and how it makes sense to what is happening in your body or life and how what you experienced will change or influence your life.

The Foragers Corner

Hello fellow wild food foragers, my name is Kimberly and I am the owner of Silver Sage Cottage I study edible plants in our local area for basic survival and fun It’s surprising the amount of wild food, medicine and useful plant resources that are available to us in nature I will be showcasing one, safe, easy to identify, wild edible plant each month I will provide a photo, a common name, a botanical name, some basic information about the plant and a recipe to try I forage and eat the plants showcased and know them to be safe, however I encourage you to do your own research and ensure that you have the correct plant before eating it

Disclaimer: I am not responsible for what you ingest, you are wholly responsible for your own safety If you are unsure, please feel free to contact me for help with identification at Silver Sage Cottage 0498076683

CHICKWEED

(Stellaria Media)

Hi foraging friends, this month we have Chickweed and there are a few different varieties of this plant in Queensland and a nasty lookalike so please be careful. The leaves contain saponins that are mildly toxic (cause diarrhoea) for some people so it is advisable to only try a small amount the first time. Having said that, this plant is a favourite amongst most foragers

LEAVES: young leaves and shoots edible raw and cooked; cooked leaves taste much like English spinach.

SEEDS: ground into a powder are used as a thickener for stews and soups or for making pancakes or pan breads

NUTRITION: Vitamins A, B1 (Thiamine), B2 (Riboflavin), B6 (Niacin), C, Protein, Carbohydrates, Calcium, Phosphorous, Iron, Magnesium, Sodium, Potassium, Zinc,

MEDICINAL: this plant has a long history of medicinal skin treatments and is often used for soothing itches, bites and stings. It can be used fresh as a poultice or infused into a soothing slave

Cottage
12

RECIPE: SILVER SAGE COTTAGE—SIMPLE SKIN SALVE

3 tablespoons dried chickweed

6 tablespoons olive oil

1 tablespoon bee's wax

Place dried chickweed and olive oil into a jar Seal the lid and write the date Set jar aside in a cool dark place for 6-8 weeks shaking occasionally After 6-8 weeks, strain the oil through a muslin cloth reserving the oil Discard the Chickweed plant matter

Place the Chickweed infused olive oil and the bee's wax into a glass container over a double boiler (I just stand a mug in a pot of simmering water) Melt and stir the oil and bee's wax together

Understanding Birth Trauma

Birth Trauma Awareness Week has recently passed. This made me think about how many women suffer from birth trauma and do not know how to recover from it. Statistics show us that 1 in 3 women will experience some level of trauma during the birth of their children 1 in 3, if you ask me this is the sign of a broken system.

Why does such a natural process now require so much intervention? Is birth really that unsafe? There are so many questions constantly surrounding the birth process, yet nothing is changing As a Doula and Kinesiologist, I see so many women and couples about to start on this amazing journey, with so much fear. Fear of the birth, fear of the system in which they are going to birth and a fear of all the unknown factors in parenthood.

Firstly, to all the women with trauma. I see you; I feel you. I understand your pain. Know that you can and will heal There are pathways back to self; thankfully, I have found, used, and understand them. Today, birth trauma is often overlooked. Women are dismissed with statements such as “but you and the baby are fine” and “it could have been worse ” . Their feelings are rejected and shut down. Women are left feeling numb, that their bodies are not their own, and they lose all sense of self within the system.

The first step in the healing journey is acknowledging the trauma. Once a woman realises the full impact the trauma has had on her, then she can begin the process of healing. Birth trauma is often disregarded as a necessary intervention, leaving the emotional impact unaddressed. This leads to women feeling misunderstood and disconnected; questioning why they feel depressed and unable to cope

Once the journey back to self begins, she can begin to process the mental and emotional aspects of her trauma. This will often require the assistance of an understanding professional. Working through trauma will take time, compassion, and knowledge.

14

So, what do we do?

How can things change?

One birth at a time

One healing at a time

We need more educated professionals, more Doula’s and Midwives who are willing to advocate for their women. Birthing techniques need to be implemented that allow women to feel empowered in their bodies. We need to remove the fear from the process. To create a safe and secure network and environment for women to be held and supported in their birthing choices.

Women are individuals and you have options. Find supportive networks to discuss your birthing choices. Educate yourself on natural birth practices, and work through your personal fears and concerns. Maintaining a healthy body and sense of self will give you the strength to advocate for yourself. You know what is best for you.

As a Doula and Kinesiologist, I can support you to find the birthing or healing pathway that best suits you. We can address the fears and concerns, connecting you with aligned professionals and service providers.

You don’t need to feel alone.

You have options. You have choices. You can have a birth you don’t need to heal from.

Marriage Celebrants Celebrate 50 Years

In Australia

Did you know the Marriage Celebrant program in Australia celebrated its 50 th birthday a few weeks ago? On 19 July 1973 the first Civil Marriage Celebrant was appointed in Australia. Her name is Lois Darcy, she’s from Queensland, and she was a special guest at the National Conference in Canberra this week. I was lucky enough to be there and to hear her speak about the early days of the program

What a story! Before the Marriage Celebrant program commenced there only two options for a couple to be married They could choose a church wedding, even if they weren't church goers, but they had to abide by whatever requirements the church placed on them as far as the ceremony was concerned Or they could go to a Registry Office between 9am- 5pm weekdays Of course, if you didn’t live in a city with a Registry Office this meant a visit to the local Court House in working hours Mon-Fri, and you got to exchange your legal vows and sign your marriage certificates in the same room where the magistrate sentenced the lawbreakers

We have come a long way since then and Australia now has one of the strongest civil marriage celebrancy programs worldwide, currently supporting over 80% of marrying couples each year to celebrate their marriage how, where and when they choose. This means each marrying couple now has the right to a respectful, dignified and personally meaningful ceremony which can take place anywhere, on any day and at any time of day or night that works for them.

I love the variety, the diversity and ingenuity of the couples I work with, and the beautiful places they choose to make their promises to each other. Helping them shape and share their stories is such a privilege. Some like it bigI think the most publicly visible wedding I’ve assisted with was held at the amphitheatre on Yeppoon Main Beach for 200 guests. And then there’s the secluded and the intimate, like an elopement on Facing Island (accessed by boat) or an elopement at Five Rocks Headland (accessed by 4WD)- can’t decide my

18
Leanne Smith Leanne Smith Civil Celebrant

favourite, they were both private and sweet! I’ve been high on hilltops at Mt Archer and Mt

Etna, down at sea level on Heron Island, Pumpkin Island, Great Keppel Island and on all the beautiful beaches along the Capricorn Coast between Sandy Point and Keppel Sands I love a road trip to Byfield or Mt Morgan and I’ve travelled west to Biloela, Emerald, Moranbah, Moura, Theodore, Baralaba and Clermont, North to Cairns and South to Murwillumbah to officiate at weddings. Having said that, some of my most favourite weddings have taken place at home in the backyard.
