It was after watching a local screening of the Birth Time documentary with her daughter that Vicki Jeffrey decided that she wanted to help give women a more positive birthing experience. Already working as an AIN (Assistant in Nursing) in the Maternity Unit at a local hospital, Vicki worked closely with midwives to support Mums post birth, helping them to learn the art of breastfeeding, giving baby their first bath and general support to new mums.
During her 3 or so years in this role, she began to realise that a high percentage of births are traumatic Women tend to hold onto that trauma in their bodies, some even for the entirety of their lifetimes. She realised that as an AIN her time was limited with always being on the clock of having multiple women to care for and endless tasks to undertake during shifts It was then that Vicki decided to delve into further studies to become a doula to be able to give muchneeded support.
A doula is a non-medical person who supports a mother before, during and after the birth of her child. Doulas support women whilst they are in the most vulnerable state Vicki offers a range of pre and post-partum
doula services including packages which can be purchased in hourly blocks and used to suit your family. Post-partum meals are also available and provide nourishment to mum while being freezer-friendly for convenience
The post-partum period is often referred to as the 4th trimester. Unfortunately our modern lifestyle often neglects this precious and important time for a new mother, where she is forming a bond with her baby, navigating the art of breastfeeding and healing in her own body as her womb returns to its pre-birth size. A doula is there to support and guide a new mum, especially once her partner has returned to work.
Vicki is most passionate about giving women resources to have confidence to have the birth experience that they deserve. She knows that by supporting new mums she is making changes for generations to come. Studies have shown that mothers who are supported are less likely to develop post-natal depression
January saw the commencement of her pregnancy circles which are to be held fortnightly at the Rosslyn Bay Wellness Centre, underneath Beaches Restaurant. There are two days and times new mums-to-be can choose from – Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings
The circles are an opportunity for mumsto-be to come together and begin to create their village before their baby is born. A donation is requested to help cover the costs of venue hire.
Expanding on her services, Vicki will bring Hypnobirthing and Childbirth Education classes to the coast later this year So keep an eye out on her social media pages for the announcement of these classes.
You can connect with Vicki via her Facebook page – Vicki’s Doula Services or email her vickijeffrey29@gmail com
You may remember Brandt Cogill from one of our earlier editions. He is the creator of The Warriors Way which supports men on their mental health journey.
Over the December holidays, he ran the first Forging Steel Young Warrior Camp for youth males aged 13-17 years at a property at Cawaral. During the 3 day, 2 night camp participants undertook a range of activities which tested both their physical and mental stamina including MMA skills training, MMA resilience training, journalling, self defense training and breathwork. The camp equipped the young men with much-needed skills to navigate their way through the challenges they are facing in life.
The next Warrior Camp is happening over the weekend of 24th – 26th February and there are spaces still currently available. To find out more information or to make a booking, please contact Brandt at The Warriors Way either via the Facebook page or Linktree.

Allow me to introduce you to a new business in the area that is set to wonderful things working with children to help them create more calm in their life. Create Calm is owned and run by Fiona.
Originally from Scotland, Fiona has a background in early childhood and residential care With over 15 years of industry experience, she has worked both in Scotland and Australia, including a remote town 200km from Alice Springs.
Fiona has recently completed a Diploma of Holistic Creative Arts Therapy and has also gone on to complete the CALM Coaching course and Cosmic Kids Yoga training. She combines these three modalities in her work to teach young ones and their carers the importance of maintaining excellent physical, mental and emotional wellbeing.
February will see the commencement of the kid’s yoga program on Thursdays at Xanadu Yoga Studio in Rockhampton. Fiona is also available for 1:1 sessions.
A creative arts activity sets the scene for the session, followed by regulation techniques and a relaxation activity. With the pace of life getting faster and faster, it is important to teach these helpful strategies to our children so that they can get into healthy habits from an early age
Fiona is also able to work with parents to help them with co-regulation when their child is upset. Building a toolkit for parents and children when they are dysregulated is one important strategy that she shares and teaches
Workshops will also be run regularly through Creating Calm, with a Gratitude Session on Sunday 12th February from 11am – 2.30pm.
To find out more about Fiona and her business Creating Calm, please head to her Facebook Page You can also contact her via phone, email or messenger with any queries.

The Capricorn Coast Writer’s Festival – Stories by the Sea is set to fuel the hearts and creative spirit of book lovers of all ages. Whether you are an avid reader or writer or wondering how you can get your work published or a booklover in general, the 3rd bi-annual Capricorn Coast Writer’s Festival on 2-4 June is set to have something to tickle your creative and imaginative fancy
The festival is organised and run by a group of volunteers who are a sub-committee of Keppel Coast Arts. The Livingstone Shire Council also supports this event which brings people from far and wide to our town for a weekend of inspiration and creativity
Free workshops for the kids and a story writing competition for school students, which is being supported by the Rotary Club is sure to help the next generation to discover a world of creative possibilities. The full program is being released in April.
Over the next few editions, we’ll be chatting with the main organisers of this year ’ s festival Nene Davies and Alison Ahearn to share with you more details about what’s happening when and how you can become involved All too often this is one event that we hear many locals say that they weren’t aware that it was even happening until they see the pictures and hear the stories after the fact!
The festival was born after a conversation between Nene and Alison, where Nene had an idea that she could ‘just do something small on a Saturday afternoon on the deck at Chapter’, after moving here and discovering that there was no writer’s festival in Central Queensland. The original organising committee consisted of Nene Davies, Alison Ahearn and Nicky Way Organising a Writer’s Festival here on the Capricorn Coast allows locals to access top-quality industry professionals without the added costs of having to travel to a major city to take part in such an event,
2023 will see the 3rd time the festival will be held in our gorgeous coastal town with an opportunity to showcase the best of the coast to locals and visitors alike. While the program is its final stages being finalised, sessions are set to take place at multiple venues across the coast including the Town Hall, The Hub (Centre for Disaster Management), Fig Tree Gallery, Livingstone Shire Library and The Villa in Cooee Bay.
This year will see the event span over 3 full days with a fantastic program currently being pieced together by the volunteer committee made up of 5 dedicated members including Nene Davies, Alison Ahearn, Kasey Allwood, Naomi Nixon, James Manning and Charmaine Grant. Organising an event like this takes a lot of work behind the scenes and extra, dedicated and reliable hands are always welcome to help lighten the load
The committee are currently in search of a Volunteer Manager to help co-ordinate the team of volunteers over the festival. Ideally this would be suited to someone who is currently studying Event Management or Media Studies or Festival Management, as it is an opportunity to put theory into practice and would look great on a future resume!
In addition, volunteers are also needed to help over the weekend with looking after venues, set up and pack down of venues and general assistance. If you are interested in learning more in how you can help, please email info@capricorncoastwritersfestival.com
To keep up with the latest information and announcements as they’re released, follow the Capricorn Coast Writer’s Festival page on Facebook and Instagram and be sure to sign up for the free newsletter where you will receive all the festival information in one easy-to-access spot! Stay tuned for more information in the March edition of The Hub Capricorn Coast!

I hear this so often, and mostly from couples who are so over all the stress that has accumulated around them as they try to plan their wedding. While it’s not for everyone, for many couples who want to marry, eloping is a very appealing alternative to the big family wedding
So how does it work?
Is it legal?
What do you need to consider?
Firstly, let me reassure you that all the legal requirements are the same, however you choose to get married Afterall married is married, however you choose to celebrate it!
But Elopement ceremonies are certainly a little different to bigger wedding events. They are up close, intense and very intimate. You will want to surround yourselves with those you feel most comfortable and relaxed with, the ones who can share your laughter and tears when the only audience you have is each other, your witnesses and maybe your closest family and friends. Your needs, wants and vision for the day will be intensely yours
You can have just the "legals only" ceremony, or you can choose a celebrant who will work with you to create an intimate and personal ceremony in which you can personalise the words, write your own vows and choose where you’d like the ceremony to take place
A “Legals Only” ceremony is just that- the celebrant says the legal words, the couple say the legal vows, the certificates are signed with 2 witnesses, and BOOM -you are married, takes less than 10 mins.
The celebrant lodges the documents with the registry office, the marriage is registered, and the marriage certificate is available for the couple
An Elopement could be a “Legals Only” ceremony if you want OR can include all the good stuff: the Giving Away, the I Do's, your personal vows, exchanging rings, and maybe a reading or a ritual
Check out my new li’l Facebook page CQ Elopement Weddings, or contact me any time if you have questions,
LeanneYour monthly guide to what's happening in the astrological world
Full Moon in Leo - 6th Feb at 4:28am AEST
This Full Moon in the fixed sign of Leo sits opposite our sun in the fixed sign of Aquarius. Leo is ruled by the sun and the element of fire so this is not a super comfortable position for Leo.
Leo has a natural ability to shine when their creative expression is set free so this is the perfect time to unlock your inner creativity Leo also tends to be enthusiastic, strong willed and courageous so sitting with their emotions can be a challenge, the same goes for our Sun during this phase in the air sign of Aquarius. Aquarius tends to get stuck in their thoughts rather than their feelings and become a little detached
Leo is also very sensitive to criticism so do your best to take feedback lightly during this time.
By Heidi Reeves Rising Sol AstrologyThis Full Moon will illuminated the courageous, joyful heart of Leo and Merge it with the Aquarius’s strong sense of community and unique outlook
While Leo wants to be seen and recognised for all they have achieved, Aquarius couldn’t care less what anyone thinks and will pave their own path.
When we bring these energies together it calls us to dig into where in our lives we truly want to feel seen?
Where can we be more courageous and open our hearts to building and collaborating with others?
Both the Sun and the moon will sit in a square aspect to Uranus during this lunation which can intensify the charge and leave us feeling a little wired, maybe sleep becomes a challenge
Prepare for change and open your heart to the possibilities that lie ahead.
Those with fixed signs as their sun/moon/rising will feel this one the most, these are Leo, Aquarius, Scorpio and Taurus or anyone with strong 5th house or 11th house placements
New moon in Pisces - 20th February at 5:06 AEST
Ahh Pisces The final sign of the zodiac connected to the element of water and ruled by Neptune (or Jupiter in Hellenistic astrology). Pisces rules everything beneath the surface, our subconscious, dreams, the mystic realm. This new moon may leave us feeling extra sensitive so be gentle on yourself during this time
Pay attention to your dreams and intuition during this lunation as this double pisces energy will make the veil between worlds a little thinner.
Pisces has a strong imagination and creative streak so let that flow if it comes through. The New Moon asks us to set our intentions for this next cycle, Pisces supports your spiritual growth and evolution, connection to self and the magic within.
Take some time to listen to your subconscious and see what you truly desire, use this New Moon to support your wishes and connect. Water can be a great thing to bring into your New Moon ceremony if that’s something you do.
Those with Mutable signs as their sun/moon/rising will feel this one the most, this includes Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces. Or those with strong 12th house placements.
Self-care - is something that most of us forget about, particularly at the start of the year when we are feeling fresh after the holidays and ready to tackle another year Even though you might be feeling on top of the world now, this is the perfect time to implement some self-care strategies to set you up for a great year, without the burnout.
The last few years have seen a huge push for us to be taking care of ourselves - but what does self-care actually look like?
It’s not always about getting that fresh mani you ’ ve been waiting for treating yourself to a cheeky massage or going on a shopping spree because you need to treat yourself. Sure, those things can help you to feel like you ’ re taking care of yourself, but you should try to implement a range of strategies that allow you to fill your cup & nurture yourself physically, mentally, spiritually and emotionally
By Caitlin Buttenshaw Catilin Jane NaturopathBy learning and implementing effective stress management and self-care practices, you’ll be able to support your own mental wellbeing - resulting in a healthier and happier life overall. In short: you’ll be able to become the best version of YOU.Here are some of the top priorities you should try to implement:
Move your body, daily It doesn’t need to be extreme, but just a little movement - aim for 30-60 minutes a day - can really help with mood, motivation, energy, digestion and your overall health
Spend some time in the sun! Though the weather doesn’t always allow this, you should try to aim for 15-30 minutes of sunshine every day It’ll positively impact your mental health, stress levels and nervous system
SLEEP. Easier said than done, but sleep is an essential component of good mental health. You should be aiming for 7-9 hours every night to ensure you ’ re thinking, feeling and responding in the best way
Nourish your body Nutrition plays an important role in reducing the long-term effects of stress and anxiety A healthy balanced diet can help maintain normal levels of stress hormones and support mental wellbeing Include a wide variety of vegetables and fruits, healthy fats, good quality protein and complex carbohydrates
Prioritise doing things for YOU. This could be as simple as pausing for 5 minutes to take a few deep breaths, having a cuppa outside, or going for a stroll. Anything that fills your cup up.
These are all easy tools to implement, but it does take commitment.
As always, if you think you need some additional support, please make sure you reach out
Many parents I work with have a hectic schedule of appointments and activities which are fitted in and around work and home duties. These appointments and activities include things such as dental or hair appointments and sporting or cultural activities such a soccer, kindy gym or ballet classes.
Many parents want to give their children the best possible start in life and provide them with more opportunities than they themselves had, believing that these things will lead to more educated, healthy and well-rounded children. I admire their goals, dedication and commitment to getting the child to these classes
By Sonja Preston Dunstan Baby Language AustraliaIf you have school aged children or if you are working and the children are in care, then Together Time during the week might be eating dinner together, or reading bed time stories, or helping them with their homework. On the weekend there are so many options:
Going to the beach
Going on a picnic
Going on a bicycle ride around your neighbourhood
Going to the movies
Planting out a vegetable garden,
Spend time in the backyard, mowing the lawn, weeding the garden, and watering it
Painting the paling fence together
Raising healthy, well-rounded children is so much more than just this One critical thing is the importance of ‘Together Time ’ Generally, when we take our children to music, dance or martial arts classes we hand our children across to a teacher or coach, and we, the parents, become spectators And whilst there is nothing wrong at all with that, it is vitally important that children get time engaged with us
Playing card or board games
Going on a bush walk
Go camping for the weekend or
Pitch a tent in the backyard and sleep the night in it
Make a fire in a pit and toast marshmallows on a stick
Playing cricket
Visiting a local play ground
Going to the zoo
Going to a museum
Having a baking day at home
When you join together as a family and all participate in an activity, you are not only having fun together, but are also giving your children some valuable messages – some of these are spoken messages and some unspoken, but all are equally important. The messages might be:
We are a family
You are part of the family
We support and help each other
We encourage each other
We enjoy spending time together.
We can have fun together
We can work together to achieve something or a goal
You are important
I (the parent) like and choose to spend time with you
We might be busy but we make time for family
We regularly spend Together Time
‘Together Time’ might be family time as above, or it may be 1:1 time with one parent and one child Again, it’s about spending quality time with the child engaged in an activity which they are interested in. It may be spending time with them ‘servicing’ their bicycle and showing them how to check the tyre pressure or how to grease the chain; or if they love cooking it could be showing them how to make a batch of scones; or if they love dinosaurs, it could be taking them to the museum
Whether it’s Family Together Time or 1:1 Together Time, it is about connecting with the child/ren. No phones, no telly to interrupt you - just focused time.
Think back to a time when you felt someone was really ‘there’ for you, when they were attentive and present, and how good that felt Conversely you might recall a time when you were with someone but they weren’t really attentive – it didn’t feel like you were important to them.
We want out children to grow up feeling they matter, and Together Time is one special way of doing that
Can you make Saturday afternoons Together Time?
How can you give your children and yourself the gift of Together Time this week?
Happy Together Time!
