Happy 2024 to You!!! Your monthly message from the Editor Happy New Year to you! I hope that you have had a relaxing break over the Christmas /New Year period and are ready to move into the New Year of 2024. May the year ahead be filled with blessings, abundance, joy, laughter, love, simplicity, and wellbeing for you. I am looking forward to walking alongside you each month bringing you the wellbeing news and events of our community. We’ve had a few nights away camping at Byfield and it was soul soothing. Despite the intense humidity and the nightly downpours with the summer storms, it was a great time to reset and recharge after the mammoth year that was 2023. There’s something about being in the fresh air, near the creek amongst the tall leafy trees that feels so much more therapeutic than countless therapy sessions! It was a reminder that this is something that is so good for me, and I aim to schedule in more down time to do just this in the year ahead, with regular disconnection from technology and social media as well. I’ll keep you posted on how that goes. As an avid scroller, it will be a challenge to forge a new habit there, but I am up for it! Our January edition brings to you a host of fabulous stories from the wellbeing community with the opportunity for you to meet Melea Apps and learn more about her business Cultivate Health Acupuncture. We also sat down and chatted with local artist Michelle from Arco Iris Interiors to learn what inspires her vibrant art creations. Read about Rhonda from Inner Pathways and the plans she has in store for 2024, along with columns from our regular contributors. We’re thrilled to be collaborating with Tim from Intra-Mind to bring the Capricorn Coast its first ever Women’s Health Month this February, so be sure to keep reading to find out about the events that will be hosted in the community and how you can get involved. As always, we’re only a message away if you have an event or story that you would like us to cover or if you just want to reach out and say ‘hi’! Here’s to a fabulous first month for January 2024!

Inspired by Acupuncture to Help Others Create Better Wellbeing By Shanelle Schick

Meet Mela Apps from Cultivate Health Accupuncture

Around 10 years ago, Melea Apps of Cultivate Health Acupuncture realised that she needed to seek support on her journey. Thus began the exploration of many modalities to help her find peace within her nervous system. Having tried and tested many different things, Melea found peace in yoga and acupuncture. Finding herself working at a health food shop in Mullumbimby that was the heart of the community, being held by naturopaths, acupuncturists, local organic produce/meals and likeminded people. It was this experience that inspired her to start studying a Naturopathy degree which then shifted as her heart called her towards Chinese Medicine.

Melea loves working with people who are ready to create change in their lives. “I believe that good health and vitality are the foundation for balance and happiness, and often takes a holistic approach to achieve”. She goes on to say that it is a privilege for her to support people on this journey. One of her biggest values in life is Truth and it is her personal mission to become the most authentic version of herself and to be able to share that with the world. Healing at the root level is something that truly inspires Melea and is the reason why she is currently undertaking the

professional Compassionate Inquiry course. A firm believer that our minds, thoughts, and traumas can create physical ill-health and that these must be addressed in addition to the bodywork. She quotes nature as being her constant and greatest teacher and loves how Chinese medicine philosophies confirm this for her. During an initial acupuncture session with Melea, there is time to chat about your whole health history, followed by the body work which will include acupuncture, massage and

Inaugural Women’s Health Month Set for February By Shanelle Schick

There are many days on the calendar to bring awareness and attention to men’s mental health and mental health in general, however one thing that seems to be lacking is a dedicated women’s health focus. Yes, there are certain days throughout the year that draw attention and focus to certain issues, however nothing that brings everything together under one umbrella and into focus. Women experiences many challenges, issues and changes in their lifetime, and it is the hope of Tim Chan from Intra-Mind to bring these to the forefront in order to create more awareness and understanding for both women and men. It might seem strange that a man has decided to step up and bring awareness to the issues that women face, but Tim’s passion for mindset and mental health overflows to women as well. As a brother, a father, an uncle and a friend, he has witnessed what life is like for women on the other side and has decided to create Women’s Health Month in February.

“Awareness and understanding of women’s health issues can help to us to understand what the females in our lives are going through. It can help us to know when to provide extra support to them, when we need to step up and allow the women in our lives to take a step back”. During the month of February a series of events, workshops and a wellbeing expo will be held to showcase the services available locally. Women’s Health Month will kick off on Saturday 3rd February with a free community barbecue at the Lagoon from 7am -10am. Feel free to drop in for some light breakfast and a chat while the kids can have a play or a swim while you’re there. It is anticipated that the full program of events will be released on Monday 15th January. Be sure to follow the Intra-Mind social media pages and The Hub Capricorn Coast page to keep up to date with the latest information on this month. If you would like to be involved in any way, feel free to reach out to Tim via email timothychan@intra-mind.com.au or get in touch with us at thehubcapricorncoast@gmail.com

Rhonda Returns to Creativity By Shanelle Schick

Drawn to meditation, Chakradance and holistic health by her own health challenges, Rhonda Whiteley has discovered the healing and therapeutic benefits of the holistic wellbeing and is passionate about sharing these modalities with others who may benefit from adding a more holistic approach to their health and wellbeing. Rhonda is passionate about helping you to realise your own potential and achieve vibrant health by systematically creating a healthier, more balanced life. She will help you to discover your inner strength and provide guidance to release old patterns and beliefs. She does this through her training as a Holistic Integrated Creative Arts Therapist.

“Practicing meditation and holistic wellbeing I have found balance in my life. As a creative and understanding person, I love to learn and share my knowledge with other women to help you discover your true self” Rhonda says.

12

Healing has now taken a more creative focus for Rhonda with a personal commitment to create art in some way at least once a day. Rhonda has a small art journal that she carries with her to capture small moments and to focus in on her creativity in the busyness of the world. A published author of “Breaking the Chains – 7 Principles to Set Yourself Free After Abuse and Trauma”, Rhonda has also featured a chapter sharing part of her story in Volume 1 of “Voices of Impact Empowering Stories from Female Visionaries and Entrepreneurs”.

We are excited that 2024 sees Rhonda back in Yeppoon on a more permanent basis and that she will come on board from February as one of our regular columnists. Rhonda will share with us some of her wealth of knowledge and help you to start to integrate more creativity into your life and your days. Rainbows, Puppies & Plants Inspire Michelle‘s Vibrant Art Shanelle Schick

A few weeks back I reached out to Michelle Taranto of Arco Iris Interiors having watched some of her recent art journey through the lens of Instagram and feeling an immediate connection with her vibrant, colourful art. Looking at Michelle’s art, you can’t help but feel happy. Meeting with Michelle in person you can’t help feeling like the most colourful, brilliant rainbow just walked into the room and gave you the most amazing bear hug ever. We spent quite a length of time chatting about all things life, relationships

Arco Iris is Spanish for rainbow and Michelle absolutely emanates a rainbow from all aspects – her personality, her art, her passion for life and the way that she chooses to show up and make an impact on the world around her. 2023 brought many successes to the self-taught artist including her first and solo exhibition at local Fig Tree Art Gallery entitled “Happy at Home” and winning her first art prize at the Martin Hanson Memorial Arts Awards in Gladstone. Her work “Eyes on the Prize” is one of many local pieces at the current Summer in Capricorn exhibition at the Fig Tree Gallery which is running until 30th January.

14

The piece that won Michelle her Martin Hanson Memorial Arts Award was her self-portrait “Modern Mother” inspired by Frida Kahlo. It was meant to be the centrepiece of her solo exhibition, however when she saw the awards were coming up and that all artists were eligible to enter, she made the choice to enter her focal piece into the awards even though it was not yet complete. “It felt like a backwards journey. I kind of created the art over a couple of months and then it wasn’t until the artwork was all coming together” Michelle says. Michelle has made a conscious choice to not have human children and has instead surrounded herself with her fur-children and plant babies. Her self-portrait is a reflection of these choices. Choices that may seem controversial to some, yet it is what suits Michelle and her needs. She is passionate about the fact that not everyone needs to reproduce and that we need to take the pressure off women feeling like they must fulfill traditional roles.

Those who have seen Michelle’s art in real life are full often positive and uplifting comments for her works. Some say the just feel the joy and can’t wipe the smile off their faces. Head on over to Michelle’s social media pages @arcoirisinteriors to follow along with her artistic journey.

More About Biofield Tuning Sissy Mylrea SeeChange Counselling & Hypnosis

There is such a thing as Biofield Anatomy that compartmentalises our energy field. It is where we store memories in a bubble that is our field around us. It is a record in our bio plasma or our life experiences. Everything we’ve ever experienced and even our ancestors experience, similar to epigenetics, are encoded in a wave format in our electromagnetic field! The signals a practitioner hears are sounds bouncing off the bodies to the tuning fork and reveal a universal pattern that appears in everyone. Emotions have different frequency signatures and as a practitioner I can hear them. They tell a story. I have learned a language of frequency. There is also a timeline that is in the Biofield Anatomy. It starts at gestation to now. It is like a needle on an album reading the vibrational record of a person’s life. ast. I have learnt that he had become my safety. When the world seemed hard, I always had my gorgeous Georgie boy to cuddle and hold. He was my world and I was his, but it wasn’t going to last. George has always great at reminding me that he is his own person and has his own desires and needs. He has taught me the most about letting go and allowing him to have his own experiences. Now at 17 I realise I cannot save him from himself. It has been a rough year for him, heartbreak from the first girlfriend. Anxiety around life and the pressure he feels within himself to meet expectations. We both have had a hard year at learning to let go and take responsibility for our own feelings and experiences. So here I sit aware of all the expansion that is now available to me as I am no longer a mother of school children. It feels exciting, yet sad. I realise that my ability to let go will determine how happy and peaceful I feel moving into the next phase of my life. Holding onto the past only brings grief and poor health, I can really see the connection to holding on emotionally and physical health now more than ever. It is now time, time for me to choose me. I choose to let go and allow my boys to be the men they

want to be regardless of what I believe. I choose to look at myself and take charge of my life and no longer hide behind the role of wife and mother. I choose service. Service of myself first and foremost and others second. Will you join me? NB. I dedicate this article to my beautiful Mother-in-law, one of my greatest teachers.

The Foragers Corner Hello fellow wild food foragers, my name is Kimberly and I am the owner of Silver Sage Cottage. I study edible plants in our local area for basic survival and fun. It’s surprising the amount of wild food, medicine and useful plant resources that are available to us in nature. I will be showcasing one, safe, easy to identify, wild edible plant each month. I will provide a photo, a common name, a botanical name, some basic information about the plant and a recipe to try. I forage and eat the plants showcased and know them to be safe, however I encourage you to do your own research and ensure that you have the correct plant before eating it. Disclaimer: I am not responsible for what you ingest, you are wholly responsible for your own safety. If you are unsure, please feel free to contact me for help with identification at Silver Sage Cottage 0498076683.

PURSLANE (Portulaca oleracea) Happy New year foragers! We are starting the year with a well-known wild foraging classic Purslane. Edible raw and cooked, this hardy little survivor can handle the summer heat with very little water or care. You will often see it growing through cracks in the sidewalks as well as the lawn and veggie patch. More than just an introduced invasive weed, it is grown as a staple food crop the world over, and is often used in salads. EDIBLE PARTS: The whole plant is edible raw and cooked; stems, leaves, flowers and seeds. For the maximum health benefits listed below, it is best eaten raw. NUTRITION: Considered a “Super Food” this plant is an incredible powerhouse packed full of nutrition. It has the highest amount of plantbased Omega-3 Fatty Acids. It has more Beta-Carotene than carrots. It has the highest Vitamin A content of any leafy green. It also contains Vitamin C and B-complex riboflavin, thiamine, niacin, folate and pyridoxine. It has the highest dietary minerals such as, magnesium, calcium, phosphorus, iron, copper, manganese, selenium and zinc. And last but not least a good dose of electrolytes like sodium and potassium. MEDICINE: Cancer fighting, protects against common heart diseases, supports bone health including Osteoporosis, supports eyesight, healthy skin, brain and nerve health.
