Australia’s `horse capital’ Scone is gearing up for the annual horse festival which takes over the town from May 3 - 19.

Scone saddles up for horse festival Scone, the Horse Capital of Australia, is saddling up once again for the annual Scone and Upper Hunter Horse Festival from May 3 - 19. The festival celebrates the place where horses reign and where each year many people from within the region and from far afield come together in a tribute to Australia’s equine industry. Upper Hunter Shire, located in the Upper Hunter Valley of NSW is world renowned for its breeding of thoroughbred horses, while also being the location for the Stock Horse Society of Australia. Scone’s annual festival has evolved from a simple street parade into being a 17-day event featuring a broad range of equestrian activities. A four hour drive on the New England Highway from Sydney, Scone is home to more than 65 horse studs breeding millions of dollars worth of foals every year. For more than 25 years the Scone and Upper Hunter Horse Festival continues to draw ever increasing crowds. They come to enjoy over two weeks of equine country life with thoroughbred shows, horse competitions, rodeos, dog trials, thoroughbred stud tours and horse racing. There will be arts and crafts

shows, balls, line dances, discos, parties, fetes and fairs. The festival also includes the Scone Cup horse race that has been run since 1947. The Scone Cup attracts well over 8,000 patrons to the track each year. This year, the festival had a medieval flavour with a themed cocktail party and even a jousting tournament. Other regulars include the famous horse parade, the King of the Ranges Stockman's Challenge, the premier stockman’s challenge in Australia, now in its’ 10 the year, with top stockmen and women competing for over $40,000 in prize money. Scott Brodie will hold demonstrations as part of the Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Program which aims to re-home Thoroughbred horses deemed suitable for use as leisure horses, re-educate and re-train thoroughbred horses for deployment in a new equine career. There will be vaulting competitions, exhibition matches of horseball, clinics and workshops, country concerts and bush poetry. Acclaimed trainer heads Downunder Ribbleton are proud to present for the first time in Australia a world leader in horse training Sylvia Zerbini. Sylvia transforms horses at liberty into the ultimate equestrian performing art. “I’ve been with horses my entire life. It’s in my blood,” said Sylvia, a ninth generation performer. She has captivated audiences throughout Europe and the America’s, since her debut on stage at the age of five. Most recently Sylvia starred in the acclaimed equestrian spectacle Cavalia (2008-2011). Her gift for orchestrating nine Arabians at once in her mesmerizing Grande Liberte performance, has earned accolades from media around the world. “I am blessed with a gift for reading horses. It’s about the bond,” Sylvia said. She grew up around her family’s horses, studying their behavior at rest and play became her equine classroom which inspired her to adopt liberty as a chosen way of communicating with horses. “I listen to what they tell me,” Sylvia said. She uses only body positions and a handful of verbal cues to communicate with 810 horses on stage (one third of which are stallions!). Born in Sarasota, Florida, Sylvia grew up with her parents on tour. Her father, was a wild animal trainer and her mother a

famous trapeze artist. Like her mother, Sylvia took to the air as a girl, but horses were her true passion.

At an age when most teens get a driver’s license, Sylvia was professionally training and performing with liberty horses.

“Being a trapeze artist helped me. Horses are agile. They’re like dancers,” she said. Another parallel is the absolute focus required to work with numerous horses at liberty. Sylvia calls the horses themselves her greatest mentors. She coined the phrase Grande Liberté (French for grand liberty) specifically for liberty exhibitions involving more than six horses - her specialty. Honored with numerous awards including the prestigious Cup of Monaco, presented to her by Monaco’s Prince Rainier, Sylvia has performed for nearly 10 million people in her career, to date. She has performed in New York, Mexico City, Montreal and Los Angeles before touring with the horse spectacular, Cavalia. Now launching a dream, that has been a lifetime in the making, Sylvia has developed educational clinics. Sharing her knowledge of training horses has never before been offered to the public. Be re-inspired by Sylvia “My dream is to help educate the equine world,” Sylvia said. So why would this be a good clinic for you to attend? Perhaps ask yourself the question: Why did you fall in love with horses to begin with? What were your horse dreams made up of? Any horse lover can remember films like The Black Stallion, Black Beauty, International Velvet etc. They were inspiring because they all showed a bond between horse and human that allowed them to do / be anything. Somewhere along the line reality deviates from that vision and the relationship suffers. Sylvia’s clinics will re-inspire and show how to achieve those dreams and these are for everyone who has a love of horses. Sylvia will be sharing with the students and spectators a way for them to better understand the keys to training horses by being able to read the horse, by creating mutual respect and working in a way that is more profitable for the horse than is found in many other training styles.

YOU CAN WIN! For a chance to win a weekend double pass to the Sylvia Zerbini clinic of your choice visit us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/pages/T he-HorseReport/202678616409634?re f=stream and like and share our page. Competition closes early May and winners will be notified directly. Sylvia will teach how it is possible with the use of pure energy to have the horse understand what is being asked in a way that horses communicate with each other. She will explain how this is possible with body movements and tones. She will be able to show that there is no good or bad in a horses mind, but it is your reaction that teaches them whether the behaviour is profitable or not. This is all connected to timing, place and circumstance. To find out more about Sylvia and her training techniques read our Sylvia Zerbini - Questions and Answers pages, 6 and 7.

The Horse Report

Finding out more about Sylvia Zerbini What do you do? I am a trainer and entertainer, travelling through out the USA presenting my art with my horses. Where do you live? I now reside in Ocala, Florida, USA. Known as the Horse Capital of the World. How did you get started in liberty training? Growing up on my family's circus, I was in charge of the turnouts for all the horses, this taught me to observe their language between each other, `The Silent Language'. Learning traditional circus liberty at an early age, never following the rules, I developed my own training methods from observing horses in their natural environment. The language of the horse teaching me the way. What advice would you give to someone who wants to change the way they interact/work with horses? Listen to your horse, always work slower and always acknowledge each thing your horse gives to you. Perfection will come in time. Who are your mentors/idols/inspirational people? Very simply, all horses are my mentors, idols and my total inspiration. What drives and motivates you to get up every morning and do what you do? I feel that I have a mission to inspire people when I work with my horses, I want teach all the language of the horse as they know each other. What is you favourite breed or breeds and gender of horse to work with and why? I do not have a favourite breed. To me all horses are equals as all humans and I treat them all according to their each individual personality. For my work on stage I prefer to work with Arabians, to me they are the most playful of breeds with each other, allowing me to work up to 12 horses on a large stage. Stallions for stage are very expressive, making a beautiful show. I have used mares and love them all but do not feel that they have as much fun in body language. Have you ever met a person or horse that wouldn't benefit from your approach? I have never met a person that does not benefit from my approach. People might at first be reserved and hold on to their ways of what they have previously seen but then after introducing the methods that I have taught them they always write to me on how my approach in teaching has changed their whole vision on Liberty. Page 6

How do you transition your work on the ground with the horses to benefit you when riding? After all of my groundwork, I can jump upon my horse for the first time and I have a calm thinking horse. This allows him to understand better. What are you working on right now? I am now working on the Spanish March and lay down with no aids, just by the communication, a touch on the shoulder for the march and a praise for a lay down, on the understanding of each of the descending phases. I am also working on multiple horses teaching me the understanding of each brain and each character of the horse. What achievement are you most proud of? The achievement that I am most proud of has to be that in 2008 when I was hired by the equestrian show Cavalia. I and several other well known trainers were given horses to train within a six month period, with the purpose of them being presented on stage. Within this time the only horses that were introduced to the stage were mine. Keeping my methods, beliefs and training techniques, under pressure from the other trainers to change my ways, telling me that it would not work and ultimately proving that my techniques were the most efficient. Being able to surpass all of these trainers with their methods was my proudest moment. Outside horses, my most memorable moment has to be for being known throughout the world for my aerial work. In 2007, I was invited by Prince Rainier of Monaco to perform my single trapeze, winning numerous awards. Still to this day having people telling how much I inspired them to go to a better place just by seeing my experience and feeling they received by watching my work.

easier to answer this question with a horse's name. With the passing years and the more knowledge I acquired, I feel that all of my horses are equally the best, they each present and give me something different, so I have to say that all of my horses on the way that I have treated and trained them, I consider the best. How do to prepare for an important event? My mental preparation for an important event is just to totally erase everything from my mind. I work for the moment. I can be in the largest venue, the largest show with the biggest crowd and I will wait in the stables until the last minute, walk up to the back door of the arena as they are announcing us and go on stage, completely blocking out everything, sounds, audience and really just work for the moment, just listening to and be in the same zone as the horses. What would you do if you weren't working with horses? If I was not working with horses I probably would of have established an aerial ballet school, teaching the art of aerial ballet, this is work I was doing before my introduction to the horse. As a younger child starting that technique first, and then introducing this to my horse work I found that the mental and physical challenge of aerial ballet was a lot similar to working with my horses. Who do you admire in the horse world? In the horse world I admire FrĂŠdĂŠric Pignon and Jean-Francoise Pignon, the work they show is an honest form of liberty work and a true one. As I said in earlier statements, I feel that there is a lot of falseness around the type of work people do with their horses, but I feel that Fred and his brother are very honest in the work that they are displaying and teaching and work very hard for their accomplishments.

Can you describe your best horse? Maybe 10 to 15 years ago it would of being

Gaining an insight into Sylvia’s `secrets’ from page 6 What advice would you or do you give to young riders wanting to follow in your footsteps? I think that all young riders need to learn groundwork before riding, it teaches the mechanics of horsemanship, the brain thought of the horse. It teaches us their timing on the ground so much that by the time you know all of your groundwork you will become as one a lot faster. Patience always succeeds and keeps proving over and over where sometimes I can be a little discouraged, for example back to the horse laying down without any aids and sometimes you have the one that is a little resistant and just when I am about to give up my horse lays down, so patience and remembering that each horse has a different way of learning and to look for that. Please describe your typical day routine. I currently have 20 horses at my farm; four young horses in training - two of them being problem horses. With the remainder of my heard, I do a great deal of socializing, exercising three to four times a week. Before I go to an event, my days are a little longer. We try to work each horse roughly 20 mins. Socializing is a major part of my training technique, one on one I do not spend hardly any time on. I love to have a rapport with my horses. I like to see them every day just to make sure that they are all well. The bonding every morning, just a check on each or a talk to each one of them is a big deal, even if I decide not to turn that horse out

and he does not work that day. All my touring horses rarely have go through their routine once they have learnt the communication and training aspects, the only thing that I do with them is socialize. Where can we find out more about you and your work? Ribbleton Warmbloods are bringing me to Australia in June this year. We will be holding clinics in Brisbane, Perth, Sydney and Melbourne. I will work with eight horses and their handlers at each clinic over a twoday period. I will be guiding them into a more natural, gentle and effective way of communicating together. My work puts the emphasis on the horse's security, the feeling of creating a good memory and us being their comfort zone. You can read more and book tickets at www.ribbletonwarmbloods.com.au

The Horse Report

The Haflinger horse The Haflinger horse is easily recognised by its stunning and unique chestnut colouring, and long, flowing flaxen mane and tail. Even more special, though, is the people-loving, willing and forgiving temperament that it acquired from generations of working with families of mountain peasants. History The Haflinger is a European breed, and first originated near the village of Hafling, in the Tyrolean mountains of Italy and Austria. The first Haflinger was documented in 1874 when a refined native Tyrolean mare was crossed with an Arabian stallion resulting in the birth of ‘Folie’, from whom all modern Haflingers must be able trace their ancestry. At that time, the Haflinger had to be a multipurpose horse that could help all family members in various ways. It was a nimble and agile pony that needed sure footing in the steep, often snowy mountain trails. It’s versatility allowed it to carry a rider or a pack and pull a cart over treacherous terrain. In World War 2, Haflingers were used extensively in the military as a pack animal and were bred smaller and stockier to carry large loads and pull carts. One particular Austrian soldier, Otto Schweisgut, made a trip into a blizzard just before Christmas as the men he was with on the front line had not received news from home in a long time. Otto and his loyal companion, a Haflinger gelding named Heini, trekked through the blizzard to the supply post and collected mail and supplies. On the way back, the blizzard worsened considerably and Otto became exhausted and could not go any further. He lay on his sled semi-paralysed with the cold and waited for the worst. Heini trudged on, falling into deep snow drifts and pausing to regain his strength at frequent intervals. Unbelievably, Heini found his way to the door of Ottos’ bunker, saving both of their lives. During those fateful hours, Otto made an oath to himself; given the opportunity, he

would stand behind this breed and devote every effort into promoting its deserved reputation throughout the world. Otto, true to his word, founded the ‘Fohlenhof’ in Austria, which today remains the World Centre of Haflinger Breeding. The Haflinger breed is regarded as a national treasure in Austria and the Austrian Government are particular about the ongoing successful continuity and purity of the Haflinger breed. Therefore there are strict regulations involved in the breeding of purebred Haflingers all over the world. Modern Haflingers In recent times, an effort has been made to refine Haflingers true to the original type of nimble, sure-footed mountain pony, whilst retaining the excellent temperaments of those horses that lived and served with soldiers so faithfully through the war. A modern Haflinger is somewhat taller and more finely built than it was 70 years ago. These changes have allowed the Haflinger to become more athletic, and extend the number of disciplines that a Haflinger can undertake with success. Classification All pure-bred Haflingers must be registered as soon as they are born, and classified after three years of age. They are encouraged to be between 140cm and 150cm tall. Apart from good confirmation, there are certain traits that a Haflinger needs to have to pass classification and be included in the studbook. A Haflinger must be of a calm, quiet and intelligent disposition. Colours from light chestnut to dark liver chestnut with white mane and tail are acceptable. Impurities of colour such as roaning dark smudges, or white markings larger than a tennis ball are judged undesirable and negative up to the point of exclusion. Colour impurities of the mane and tail of more than 10% black, grey or red hues will also be judged negative up to the point of exclusion. White socks above the hock will result in disqualification. A colt must score 80% or

above to be eligible to breed in Australia, and mares are graded according to their score as to determine the better ones for a breeding program. Cross-breeding is now discouraged by the World Haflinger Federation. Australian Haflingers Haflingers were introduced to Australia in the 1970’s. There are approximately 400 registered Haflingers in the Australian studbook. Maintenance of the studbook is undertaken by the Australian Haflinger Horse Breeders Association, currently the only registered body in Australia. The AHHBA are responsible for ensuring that the world standards for breeding Haflingers are upheld. Haflingers have been used in various disciplines including pony club, trail riding, vaulting, dressage, jumping, cross country, harness, showing and as riding for therapy. The original purpose of the Haflinger as an all-purpose family horse has never been more relevant. They are beautiful, gentle, loyal, intelligent, affable, trainable and safe. They are a wonderful choice for anyone seeking a versatile equine companion. For further information visit www.haflinger.com.au

Due to their breeding, Haflingers are well-suited to carriage work.

The Horse Report

Protecting good leather against rain damage By ANNA CARNER BLANGIFORTI* Water is no friend to leather, especially rainwater and its pollutants. At the microscopic level, leather is made up of a tangle of collagen fibres resembling a pad of steel wool. In the tanning process, hides are soaked in chemicals to prevent its fibres and their bonds from decomposing. Then natural fats and oils are tumbled with the hides (this was once a hand process known as `currying’) to keep the protein bonds from drying out and to make the leather supple. Keeping those protein bonds lubricated and supple is the key to long-lasting leather. If the bonds dry out completely, they shrink, become brittle and break. Once broken, they can’t be mended. The leather is permanently weakened. Soaking dried-out leather in oil may make it supple and bendable again but it can’t repair damaged fibres or restore their strength. When water penetrates leather, it forms temporary bonds with the oils that lubricate the interior fibres, then floats those vital oils to the surface as it evaporates. That’s why the leather feels stiffer—to both you and your horse. And that’s exactly what happens when your equipment gets drenched. The Solution The solution to your rainy day ride and its potential damage to your tack is to take action to get some therapeutic oil back into that wet leather before its fibres completely dry. Remove dirt, sweat and mud from the wet leather with a damp rag. If the leather is really dirty or traces of old conditioner have floated to the surface, use a nongreasy, neutral pH leather cleaner to get the surface clean. Wet leather needs to absorb conditioner deep within its fibres to replace currying oils flushed out by water. While the leather is still damp and its pores are still open, apply a light coat of a penetrating neutral pH leather conditioner which duplicates the fat

Taking the time to protect your leather goods will keep them in top condition in and out of the weather.

liquors tumbled with freshly tanned hides to make them supple. Capillary action will pull the conditioner down between the fibres. Thick or waxy conditioners tend to stay on or near the leather’s surface, so look for conditioners with a neutral pH and avoid cleaners or conditioners with a harsh, alkaline pH. An alkaline pH, such as that of soaps, can damage and eventually weaken leather fibres. An Ounce of Prevention One thing taking quick action to re-lubricate your leather can’t do is to restore its appearance once dyes are affected. Water moves some dyes, leaving spots, splotches and streaks when it finally evaporates. `Erasing’ these water marks is almost impossible once they occur. Often, stripping and re-dying is the only recourse to restore an even colour or the original depth of colour. Preventing the problem with an appropriate waterproofing product is much easier. Which water protection product is most appropriate depends on both your purpose and your personal preferences about things like application methods, odours, and how the product affects the leather’s surface. Grease-based dressings form a physical barrier that keeps mud and water away from leather’s pores. However, they are sticky, attract dirt, and cannot be used on nappy leathers like suede. Silicone polymer sprays are non-

greasy and can be used on suede as well as smooth leather. They can make leather surfaces slippery, however, can affect the colour of porous leathers, and can have a drying effect on leather if overused. Acrylic copolymer is the newest option for waterproofing. It forms a microscopic net too fine

for water molecules to penetrate but porous enough to allow water vapour to pass through. It creates a unique, flexible coating that protects leather fibres from rain, maintains the breathability of leather, is not slippery, and actually acts to fix dyes in porous suede. In our frenetic multi-tasking times, most of us are guilty of tack neglect at one time or another. Next time you’re caught out in the rain, don’t think of it as the ruination of your tack. Look at it as an opportunity to stop putting off that leather conditioning and waterproofing you’ve meant to do but just haven’t gotten around to yet.

HIDEZ compression and recovery suits HIDEZ Compression Recovery suits are made from a revolutionary moisture management fabric focussing on specific muscle groups. The basic theory is best described as applying a controlled external pressure which support key muscle groups by using an innovative wrapping technique. Tactically placed panels and seams (anchor points ) create the right amount of balanced graduated compression reducing muscle fatigue. The suit is designed to be worn by all types of equines, whether it's the family's pony clubber or extreme high performance animal athlete, such as Black Caviar, Fiorente, Hay List and Smoken Up to name a few. What does this suit do besides support muscles? The HIDEZ compression and recovery suit helps circulation and supplies more oxygen to all the muscle groups, beginning from the extremities (the legs ) all the way to the heart. This process speeds up the removal

of waste products such as LACTIC ACID from the circulatory system resulting in better performance by being able to exercise harder, longer and recover faster. The suit is recommended to be worn during all transportation, stabling and prior to and after exercise or competition. How does the suit go on? The suit comes beautifully packed with an instruction DVD and also a backpack carry bag. What's more, HIDEZ is Australian owned and operated, is SPF 50+, easy to wash and anti- bacterial. It is also helps to reduce insect bites and maintains a good looking coat. Sizes range from 14H to 17.2H, basic colours available are black, red and blue. Like a custom designed suit with your company logo or stud name? Graphic design service is available at an extra cost. Arabians prepare to head to the races Queensland Arabian enthusiasts from as far north as the Atherton Tablelands and west to Roma gathered at the Veresdale Pub towards the end of March for an information session about Arabian horse racing. The object was to ascertain if there was enough interest to form a club to further investigate the staging and promotion of Arabian horse racing in Queensland. While Arabian racing has been conducted before in Queensland it has been some time since the last event and due to the recent resurgence in Victoria with major sponsorship from the Middle East, it seems now is the time to rekindle the flame. The group were given first hand information from Mark Baker, the promoter of the recent Arabian race held in Mareeba. Mark not only staged the event with several supporters but also trained the winning and second placed horses. The newly formed club has plans to conduct three to four events later this year with Purebred and Derivative races being held in conjunction with thoroughbred racing at several South East Queensland

Manage horse health through nutrition By ANTOINETTE FOSTER Equine Dip. Nut. Nutritional Therapist and Medical Herbalist ©2013 About Antoinette Antoinette foster is an equine nutritional therapist and medical herbalist of some 25 years experience. She is highly respected member of the equestrian community in Australia and has also been a successful speaker overseas in countries such as Denmark, the United Kingdom and New Zealand. Antoinette offers a unique style of presentation looking at the simplicity of feeding your horse. She has a wealth of training and experience in areas which include human nutrition, mineral salt therapy, trace element therapy, amino acid therapy, nutrition and disease and herbal medicine and more recently became a trained nutrigenomics practitioner. Antoinette has been a presenter Equitana since it began in 1999. She has participated on many panels with other practitioners on the subject of equine nutrition. She also has a human health practice where she conducts Nutrigenomics DNA testing. More recently her work with genetic scientist Dr Margie Smith has led to the development of equine genomics testing, which is now available. Antoinette founded Hi Form Australia in 1990, however formulated her first product in 1987 which was the HerbaNerve. Antoinette has formulated a unique range of natural therapy products for horses, dogs and cats. Each formula works in a synergistic way, there are not high levels of ingredients used as they are not necessary, and all ingredients are oral grade for human use. All ingredients used fit into the category of natural therapy which include mineral salts, vitamins, trace elements, amino acids and organic herbal extracts. All ingredients used are listed with the TGA and have clinical studies and data behind them. In 2010 Antoinette began working with JT Johnson and Sons of Kapunda in South Australia after a culmination of 11 years work developing a range of natural horse feeds. Like the Hi Form products, these feeds are a world first - they are unique, they are clean feeds, highly nutritious and highly palatable, and there are no additives, colours, flavours or by-products used. All cereal hays, Alfalfa, grains are grade one export quality. JT Johnson and Sons celebrate their 90th year this year. They are a fourth generation family company who are the largest exporter of hays in Australia. The horse feed industry is a new industry for Johnsons and one they are truly excited to be involved in. “It is an honour to work with Johnson’s Page 14

together creating the best nutrition options available for all horses,” she said. This year, it is Antoinette’s intention to continue educating and offering advice to horse owners and to also continue developing new products for humans and animals. Education is the most important aspect of Antoinette’s business. It is a way of giving back to the equestrian community. The love of the horse has always driven Antoinette. Her aim is to help as many people as she can, not just with their horses, dogs and cats but with themselves as well. After all, health is essential for every living being. This month, she begins a run of equine nutrition seminars in South Australia, and also to NSW, the Northern Territory, Queensland and Western Australia and has been invited as a speaker in Denmark later this year

Tips to Help The wet weather up north has caused a number of problems with horses, paddocks will stay wet for some time after heavy rains even when there has been a slow down in the rain and sunny days. Many soils will retain high levels of water and this can present a serious risk for the horse’s health. Even if horses are shod they need to be protected from diseases and problems related to standing in mud. There are a number of conditions that can result from consistent wet weather these include seedy toe, Greasy heel and mud fever. Horses standing in water for a number of days will increase the risk of these conditions. It is very important to try to prevent these conditions from occurring. It is highly recommended to bring you horse out of the paddock daily and clean the hooves and then apply a good quality dressing on the bottom of the feet and the hoof itself. Antoinette finds that Effax is a very good hoof product, but if you are already using something similar that is fine, providing it offers some form of protection from the dampness, in other words a product that can repel the water. Make sure you clean the hoof properly so that there is no dirt left and wipe clean with a towel. In the wet weather it is essential that you clean right down to the sole of the hoof that way you can see if there is any damage. A small scrubbing brush would be useful also, just remember if you don’t clean the hoof every day your horse will possibly end up with seedy toe If you locate white line, this can mean the start of an infection, but if you take about 2mm off and protect with a good water proof hoof dressing you should reduce the risk of seedy toe. Seedy toe is the separation of the hoof tissue from the sole of the hoof which is called the white line or laminar. continued page 15

Prolonged wet weather can bring problems  continued from page 14 If an infection did take hold this can reach to the coronet band and that will not be a great outcome, your horse could also become sore. Horses that have white feet tend to be a little more susceptible to greasy heal, however any horse can develop greasy heal in wet weather. The other problem can be swelling in the legs due to lack of exercise. When there is lack of movement and muscle contraction, it can affect the venous and lymphtic system leading to a build-up of fluid in the venous system and a decrease in lymphatic drainage resulting in excess fluid in the subcutaneous tissues of the leg. These swellings are generally quite mild and do not appear to cause pain. Keeping horses moving is the ideal situation, this means taking you horse out for regular walks or exercise under saddle. Light work should be sufficient to reduce the swelling, however there are some excellent natural products that can assist the venous and lymphatic system and reduce swelling. The final and almost certainly the most important, is nutrition and avoiding diges-

A lack of exercise due to wet weather can produce swelling of the legs.

Keep an eye on horses’ legs which can be prone to infection in prolonged wet spells.

Good quality roughage hard feed is essential, especially in wet weather.

tive disorders. Feeding a diet that contains plenty of roughage is ideal, no soaking of hays or hard feeds, horses have teeth for a reason and plenty of roughage is healthy for the digestive system. However when horses are located in wet areas with poor pasture there are a number of problems associated with this. Horses grazing some tropical grasses for extended periods can suffer `Big Head' disease or Osteodystrophia fibrosa. These grasses are buffel grass, green panic, setaria, kikuyu, guinea grass, para grass, pangola grass and signal grass. The cause of the problem is a high level of oxalates. Calcium oxalate is insoluble and unavailable to the horse. There needs to be more calcium than oxalate in the pasture for the calcium to be available. This is where supplementing becomes vital to the horse, but this means the correct formula, which is balanced and assists the uptake of minerals vital to the horses health including calcium and magnesium. Some horses can also lose weight in wet weather due to the poor nutritional value of grasses, feeding a good balanced ration is essential to maintain a good body condition Prevention is far better than waiting for things to go wrong. Feeding good quality lucerne hay can be of great benefit due to its excellent level of cal-

cium and overall nutritional analysis. Keeping an area fenced off is also ideal so you have somewhere to bring your horse to when all the other areas are muddy and water logged. A good quality high roughage hard feed is essential and during very wet weather it is also worth considering using a really good pro and pre-biotic such as BioEquus, a product such as this will reduce the risk of digestive disorders such as diarrhoea etc. Horses in water logged area tend to ingest a higher level of water and this can be unhealthy. Make sure when you feed you horse in water logged areas that you have you feeders on the ground, this is the normal way for horses to eat. Invest in a thick piece of rubber matting to reduce the ingestion of excess water including stagnant water and mud. Rubber matting can be easily hosed off each day if necessary. Rubber matting can also be used under hay nets or you can place the hay straight down on the matt. If you are using hay nets don’t have them too high. Make sure if possible that you horse has shelter so he or she can be out of the rain and have somewhere dry even if only for short relief. If you require any further advice or information on feeding please contact Antoinette via email at enq@hiform.com.au or call 03 9798 1000.

It’s the small things that count in equine health Dr STEPHEN DUREN PhD - Hy Gain Feeds When feeding horses, we often concentrate on the major components of the diet. Does the horse have enough pasture, hay, chaff or even hard feed? When we are pressed for more details of the diet we can sometimes recall the amount of protein in the feed, but most other nutrients seem unimportant. However, it is the intake of these other nutrients, the small things, which keep horses healthy. Specifically, it is the intake of minerals and vitamins that are vital to the performance, growth, immune function and reproduction of all horses. Minerals Minerals can be divided into two classifications - macro-minerals and micro-minerals, based on the amount required in the diet. Macro-minerals are required in large amounts in the diet. They include minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, sodium, chlorine, and sulfur. These minerals are vital to the development of the skeleton, muscle contraction, acid-base balance, activity of the nervous system and hoof and hair growth. The other classification of minerals is microminerals. These minerals are required in small amounts in the horses diet. They include minerals such as copper, iodine, iron, manganese, selenium, and zinc. These minerals function in most of the chemical reactions in the body helping to metabolize nutrients, maintain connective tissue and joint tissue, aid in oxygen transport to muscle and perform as antioxidants. Vitamins Vitamins are equally important in the diet of horses. Vitamins are classified as either fatsoluble or water-soluble based on how these are stored within the body. The major fat-soluble vitamins include vitamins A, D, and E. These vitamins are important for vision, calcium absorption and regulation, and as a primary antioxidant within

Adding minerals and vitamins can help to ensure peak horse health.

the body protecting cells and muscle function. Fat-soluble vitamins are stored within the fat deposits of the body and can accumulate giving the potential of toxicity if overfed. The other classification of vitamins is watersoluble vitamins. These vitamins are often referred to as B-vitamins. They include thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, biotin, and folic acid. These vitamins function in nearly every chemical reaction within the body; therefore, they are critical in metabolism, growth, and energy generation. The B-vitamins are manufactured by healthy bacteria within the horse's digestive system and specific requirements have only been established for thiamin and riboflavin. Detecting deficiencies The reason why many horse owners are oblivious to the vitamin and mineral content of the diet is simple - a mild deficiency of any of these minerals or vitamins is difficult to visually see in the horse. For example, a deficiency in calorie content of the diet can easily be seen as weight loss. A deficiency in protein can be seen as a rough hair coat or poor growth. But a deficiency of minerals or vitamins is much more difficult to visualize until the condition becomes quite severe. However, less obvious signs of mineral and vitamin

deficiency exist if you look closely. For example, cracked, brittle hooves are often the result of zinc deficiency. The solution So how can we ensure our horses' diets are properly fortified with essential minerals and vitamins? The easiest approach is to feed a prepared feed or supplement that is properly fortified with these nutrients and feed the product according to label directions. If we are only feeding half of the recommended feeding level, our horse will not be receiving the proper amount of nutrients. What do we do about overweight horses, or horses that simply don't require the calories that are in a prepared feed? The answer are products containing concentrated protein, vitamin and mineral supplements, which are designed to be fed at low intakes. Just one example of this type of product is HYGAINÂŽ BALANCEDÂŽ. This product, when feed as directed, provides both the essential minerals and vitamins that a horse requires, without all of the calories. Feeding a horse a properly balanced diet is not hard, remember that the small things (vitamins and minerals) are important. For more information visit www.hygain.com.au

Cavalia - spectacular and so much more By BOB ANTHONY From the minute you walk into the impressive huge white tent of Cavalia, you sense you are in for something special. The internationally acclaimed show, which has taken Queensland by storm is now preparing for its tour of the southern states. As the name suggests, Cavalia: A Magical Encounter Between Human and Horse is just that magical. With 50 horses, 42 riders, acrobats, dancers aerialists and musicians, the show combines elements of Cirque du Soleil with the majesty of horses. No matter where you sit in the 2000 stand, you will witness changing sets, interaction between human and horse, action and live music. From liberty horses to trick riding, dressage to comedy, this is more than just a show for horse

Page 20

lovers though after watching Cavalia, you will be a lover of horses. As you might expect from a Cirque du Soleil-inspired production, there is plenty of action as both human and horse are put through their paces. The stage is a wonder in itself from incorporating a pond, water curtains, snow and leaves falling from above to a trick riding arena and even allowing horses to gallop in teams, you will be wondering where to look next. Having seen a number of `horse productions’, what sets Cavalia apart are the combinations of horses doing liberty work or being ridden with acrobats and tumblers who provide their own theatre. However, action isn’t limited to the ground with aerialist dropping from above to work with riders on horseback in stunts

Cavalia has been a smash success in Brisbane and looks certain to do the same in Sydney and Melbourne.

which are groundbreaking. There’s a sense of joy from the cast who obviously love what they are doing and the horses, in magnificent condition, also look like they enjoy performing. This is a show for all ages and not just those involved in the equestrian world. So popular has Cavalia been in

Brisbane, that the season there was extended by an extra week. Cavalia: A Magical Encounter Between Human and Horse opens its Sydney season on May 15 and then in Melbourne on August 7. Tickets are available by calling 1800-765-955 or via the website at www.cavalia.com.au

Stem cell nutrition provides a breakthrough in horse health Stem cell nutrition is a revolutionary breakthrough in health and wellness, both for humans and animals. It helps the body naturally increase the number of Adult Stem Cells released from the bone marrow. Numerous studies indicate that a higher number of circulating Adult Stem Cells equates to better overall health. Over the last few years, research has shown that Adult Stem Cells are at the core of the body's natural renewal system. Understanding the role of stem cells will help to appreciate their importance and also the importance of maintaining their well-being. Stem cells are best described as `master cells’, having the capacity to replicate themselves and then develop into cells of various tissues in the organism. Most cells on the body are specialised - `designed’ to serve a specific function. While these specific cells will never differentiate (or even proliferate), stem cells produced in bone marrow, are the `basic blocks’ which can become any type of cell once they have received a signal or request from the body. Their most important function is to promote healthy growth and provide regeneration. Hence the importance of ensuring the production and maintenance of stem cells. Due to physical activity and the aging process, horses' tissues and organs require ongoing renewal. The all natural stem cell enhancer, StemEquine® , is the world's only supplement, specially formulated to support the natural release of adult stem cells from the bone marrow of horses or other large animals, thereby contributing to the natural renewal process of your animal's body. This means that a greater number of stem cells are available to migrate into tissues and organs, thus participating in the day-today natural repair process in the

whole body. As mentioned eariler, stem cells have the ability of becoming virtually any type of cells in the body as required. StemEquine®, the organic and natural stem cell enhancer, is the patented equine version of the first stem cell enhancer for humans. StemEquine®, contains a patented blend of two proprietary AFA concentrates: one is MobilinTM, which contains an L-selectin ligand that supports the natural release of stem cells (CD34+ cells) from the bone marrow; the other is a polysacchariderich fraction named Migratose® that supports the migration of stem cells into tissues and organs. Other ingredients are alfalfa leaf, molasses, natural apple powder and flavour, as well as stevia leaf extract. Horses need StemEquine®, especially with heavy exercise and growing older, their tissues and organs require ongoing natural renewal. In fact, any area which needs repair or rejuvenation is reliant on healthy stem cell production. By supporting the natural release of adult stem cells from the bone marrow, StemEquine® helps provide the raw materials necessary for this renewal process to take place. This natural process - bone marrow released-stem cells - can circulate and reach all areas of the body, not just those reached by a needle. This means the outcome is a more beneficial outcome for overall horse health. The result is a uniquely effective health and performance strategy for your horses. Why not go to the website, at www.NewAdultStemCells.com select the product tab and look for StemEquine. There is a video from a US horse rescue operator who speaks from first hand experience about StemEquine. Supplied by StemEquine

StemEquine testimonials “Conor came to us lame last winter and he had very serious ringbone which is a kind of arthritis in his bone joints and couldn’t trot. We put him on StemEquine and he quickly seemed more comfortable. It’s amazing to see his life and how it has improved since being on StemEquine.” - Pamela R., Blue Star Equiculture

“Our horses are on StemEquine. We’ve seen great change in their attitude, body and coat. They have had more sustained energy to carry them through their strenuous workouts and show schedule.” - Cesar Parra, NJ

StemEquine the all-natural Adult Stem Cell enhancer for all horses 100% Natural Proprietary Concentrate Aphanizomenon Flos-aquae (AFA) assists in naturally releasing more Adult Stem Cells into circulation. AFA has been safely consumed for over 3 decades. No sugar, artificial colours, artificial flavours, dairy, yeast or preservatives.

Why would your horse need StemEquine? For a number of reasons such as heavy exercise and growing older, your horse’s tissues and organs require ongoing natural renewal. By supporting the natural release of Adult Stem Cells from the bone marrow, StemEquine helps provide the raw materials necessary for this renewal to take place.

The result: a uniquely effective health and performance strategy for your horses. To order your canister of StemEquine contact: 0424 975 017128 495 contact: 0412 www.NewAdultStemCells.com

NSW takes out the State of Origin on Horseback The New South Wales team has taken out the inaugural Over The Top State of Origin on Horseback at Morgan Park in Warwick over the weekend. It was a nail biting finish, with NSW winning by only 0.5 of a point, setting the stage for a tough battle in 2014. Scoring was based on the total of the lowest 3 scores from each team. NSW Captain Natalie Blundell enjoyed a dream run, winning the Top Horse 3*, and the Altech CCI1* Classes on Algebra and Girl with a Curl respectively. She also placed 3rd in the 1* on her other horse My Aladdin. “It was really good for my team of horses to get exposure to a new track. They’re familiar with most of the cross country courses in NSW now so giving them a new course and collecting three places certainly made the trip worthwhile!” Ms Blundell said. The Queensland Captain Stuart Tinney wasn’t far behind, taking out the Saddleworld 2* on Sydney. “NSW may have scraped through with a win to collect the trophy this year, but we’ll be out to reclaim it in 2014,” Mr Tinney said. Team mate Dean Morris also fared winning Page 22

the Noosa Equestrian Centre CCN EVA 105cm class. Fellow Statesman Rebel Morrow won the Ozshotz Photography EVA80cm. The weekend was also packed with excitement including a visit from Rugby League Great, Shane Webcke, and carriage and Morgan horse displays. Young showjump rider Gemma Creighton walked away $500 richer after taking out the Dr Show Puissance competition at Warwick. Jumping 160cm on her D-grade horse It’s Phoenix. Event Director Dr Cameron Osborne said it was a successful weekend. “The calibre of the athletes was second to none. To have everyone from beginners to Olympians taking part and enjoying the weekend is a win-win,” he said. “I’d like to thank everyone who’s been involved, the volunteers for their countless unpaid hours, the sponsors for making this event a reality and the local media who’ve been extremely supportive.” Dr Osborne said.

The Horse Report

Understanding the role of `proud flesh’ By DAVID LOVELL BVSc Redlands Veterinary Clinic Horse owners fear and dread `proud flesh’. Everyone has their secret remedy. The first question we are asked when called to a wound is “How do we stop it going proud?” The truth of the matter is that `proud flesh’ is really our best friend and ally in dealing with horse wounds and injuries and without it, nothing would heal. The true name for `Proud Flesh’ is granulation tissue and this is part of the normal natural healing process of the immune system. Tissue becomes `proud’, only when it is produced in excess and seemingly becomes out of control. The key critical fact that all must realise is that in every situation that results in the production of proud flesh, there is always an underlying cause. Our job in managing and dealing with this tissue is to determine the underlying cause. Once we know this and deal with

it, the proud flesh disappears. I have just said there is always a cause and we have to determine that cause to fix the problem. Obviously there are countless possible causes and it is impossible to cover all. Fortunately, most cases fall into a few very simple categories and it is relatively easy to diagnose the problem. The overwhelming majority of cases are due to the very simple problem of movement. The horse is a very reactive animal and has long vulnerable legs. It is very common for the lower leg to be involved in some accident and lacerated. The lower down the leg, the greater the problem. The hoof, pastern, and fetlock are all very highly moveable areas, as are the front of the hock and knee. Once the skin has been penetrated, the edges of the wound gape apart each and every time the horse moves. How can it possibly heal? What the body has to try to do is `fix’ the moving edges into appo-

sition so that new cells can bridge the gap and join the cut edges. If the edges keep pulling apart, nothing can happen. In this situation, nature responds by producing so much new granulation tissue that eventually the mass is so large, that movement is eventually reduced and the wound finally heals. Typically this takes many months and results in the production of a very unsightly scar. How do we fix this - simple, eliminate the movement. This is done primarily be stall confinement , heavy support bandages, and ultimately a cast. This obviously creates an expense but believe me, one initial cost that results in a quick, clean and rapid healing with minimal scar, with the horse returning to work in a relatively short time, can be much cheaper than having to deal with a wound for many months, care for the horse, not be able to use the animal, and be left with an unsightly blemish. The second common, and often related cause, is the size of the wound. Horses can sustain some terrible lacerations over very large areas of the body. Again, the limbs are the most serious, primarily because they have very little muscular tissue and often a relatively poor blood supply. Wounds to the head usually heal beautifully and quickly because there is little movement here and an excellent blood supply. Similarly wounds to the upper body have less movement, plenty of muscle and blood and so can do very well. The `golden rule’ to remember for all lacerations is that they should be sutured if it is at all possible. Yes, this can be expensive, but owning a horse is an expensive undertaking and anything that can be done to reduce down time and return value for the cost of owning a horse should be money well spent. What suturing does, is oppose and bring together the gaping edges so that there is a lot less gap to bridge and no needs to produce excess granulation tissue. Suturing horse wounds and

managing the after care is a real art and must be done properly to obtain good results but well worth the trouble. Infection is another cause. Owners often believe that this is the major cause but this is not correct, particularly if talking about infection due to bacteria. Everyone wants to treat the injury heavily with antibiotics to prevent infection. In the majority of cases, this is a waste of money and effort. Low grade chronic infection can certainly be an issue if the periosteum of the bone has been exposed and damaged, typically on the front of the cannon bones, but this situation needs special care and management and can be a long term problem. More often the issue of infection results from poor drainage. If there is a deep pocket of cavity in the wound that fills with fluid and cannot drain, local infection can certainly occur. Establishing drainage is the cure, not primarily antibiotics. Two less common, but true infectious causes of `proud flesh’ are actually being seen at this very time. Continued page 25

Identifying causes of `proud flesh’ can assist in treatment From page 24

`Summer Sores’ are an infection with the larvae of the stomach worm, Habronema, that is spread by flies. Normally the fly ingests the larvae from the ground and transfers it to the horse by feeding around the mouth. Flies also are attracted to any wound and they will deposit the larvae here. This results in a very intense inflammatory reaction and a very rapid and spectacular production of proud flesh. These lesions, once diagnosed, can be treated and managed relatively easily but again, the correct medications must be used. Flies typically are at their worst at the end of summer and so we see them now. The other infection is a fungal infection where the fungal hyphae gain access to a wound and start to grow. This typically occurs in lower swampy areas where there is a lot of surface water lying around and results in the development

of the true `Swamp Cancer’. These can be very nasty and extremely irritating to the horse but again, once diagnosed, most can be effectively dealt with. The final `common’ cause, of so called proud flesh that I want to deal with are sarcoids (pictured). These are very common, particularly in younger horses. They are a true cancer and need to be dealt with very carefully. Most can be cured but professional advice should always be sort. The very worst thing that can be done to a sarcoid is to stir it up ineffectively. Application of some of the irritant mystical and magical so called proud flesh remedies to a sarcoid can really stir it up and result in an extremely rapid and vigorous production of excessive cancer tissue which becomes very difficult to deal with. Sarcoids are a full subject in themselves and are dealt with in another article.

The Horse Report

What’s New Pulse Electro-Magnetic Field Therapy (PEMF) Pulse solutions would like to introduce you a new equine therapy system, Pulse Electro-Magnetic Field Therapy (PEMF). This is now available in Australia and is currently being used widely overseas, including over 8000 veterinarians in the USA. It is used for treating horses with muscle soreness, injuries, strains, pre competition conditioning and post competition recovery. PEMF is widely used by those in racing, jumping, dressage, western, and polo. The results after a half hour treatment are extraordinary. PEMF works by admitting an electro magnetic pulse that penetrates 30 to 45 centimetres into every muscle, tendon, ligament and bone to increase healing of injuries and decreasing recovery time by half of that if it was not used. It acts on the ions in the cells which causes them to proliferate and increase flow of nutrients towards injured areas, it also improves oxygen uptake in the muscle by up to 200 percent which decreases production of lactic acid therefore decreasing pain in the horse enabling it to perform at a higher level. The Horse Report Revolutionary award winning bit `like having power steering’ The WTP (Winning Tongue Plate) normal plate bit design the difference between winning and losing an event. Used by leading trainers Brian Smith, David Hayes, Dave Kelly, Mark Kavanagh, Olympic riders Megan Jones and colt breakers and Olympian riders Blair Richardson and Peter McMahon rating it the best bit on the market and like having power steering reforming some of the worst hangers and problem horses. The WTP bit is the only bit in the world to win a prestigious Australian international design award. It is well documented jointed snaffle bits cause roof rubbing and bit pinching causing pain signals to spread to any other branch of the same facial nerve, resulting in pain in areas of the face that have no direct contact with the bit resulting in head shaking, pulling, rearing, bucking, mouth opening and poor performance. The WTP centre flat plate is up to 14mm lower than other bit joints allowing more room between the tongue and the roof of the mouth preventing all mouth issues. Exposed jointed snaffle bits create up to 300kg of pressure pinching the tongue down to centimetres. Whereas the WTP Bit encased joint prevents the arms folding down, and the 6.5 square cm low profile plate creates a softer surface area reducing the bit pressure by about 85%. The WTP bit arms have limited travel to reduce outer ring pressure to the cheeks and lips when working a horse in a straight line. The only time cheek pressure is required when turning your horse. Further the bit arms do not hinge downward thereby preventing pain to the roof, tongue and bars. Another great benefit of the WTP Ring bit the large ring runs through the plate. Therefore, no small annoying retaining ring required. The wait is over to prevent and fix mouthing issues contact your local saddlery for a WTP bit. The reports can be viewed at www.iiwinners.com

The Horse Report

Improve your riding - shoulders back By KELLIE TOMBS* How many of you find it easy to keep your shoulders back? For some people it is easy and natural, they don't have to think about it, but for the majority of us, it is something we have to work on and train our bodies to do. One of the things that makes us lean forward and round our shoulders is fear. When we are nervous or scared, often our first response is to lean forward, grip with our knees and grab the neck. If you watch people riding for the very first time, no matter what age they are, they will spend a lot of time crouched forward and you need to convince them to relax and sit up straight. Recently I was giving a lesson to a new student, and the horses in the paddock next door decided to have a big gallop around. It was a very windy day and the girl's horse started to put it's tail up, go into a lovely piaff but with his nose in the air and paying no attention to the rider whatsoever! Her first reaction was to lean forward, grab on to his neck, grip with her knees (heels come up) and look scared (it was also her first ride on this particular horse, although she is a fairly experienced rider, she had no knowledge of how this horse would react). I tried to explain the `emergency stop’ fast but of course, as soon as we are scared, it is very hard to change your bodies automatic reactions and also to actually listen to instructions. Your brain goes into a mode which is instinctive and reactive, rather than logical. The problem with this is, that if you try your emergency stop and you are leaning forward, looking down and your heels are up, you will fall off! It is very important that you look up, push your heels down and even a little forward and lean back slightly. Test it - get someone to try and pull you off your horse, try it with your heels up vs down, shoulders slumped vs chest up. So how do you change your fear response? Changing an instinctive response is not an easy thing to do. It takes awareness, time, and practice practice practice. Now back to shoulders back. The reason I brought all that up is because I want you to start thinking about how that response feels to the horse. The horse is a prey animal, we are a predator. Often times this fear reaction happens when the horse is scared too, then we clamp on to his neck and throw our weight for-

Above: Teaching rider to sitting is one of the first big challenges for any instructor. Top right: leaning forward sends the wrong message to the horse while sitting straight (bottom right) will bring a better response.

ward, do you think this makes the horse feel more or less scared? I think it is the Parelli people who talk about this in further detail, and it is fascinating to understand further the behavioural principles behind why we ride the way we do, and why certain movements will elicit the correct response from the horse even though they have never been taught it. Refining this response, when your horse starts to get a little bit faster than you want in your trot circle, are you tilting forward? When your canter starts to be a little bigger than you want, do you lean back or forward? When you go into a jump that is a little bigger than you are comfortable with, do you wait for the horse to jump or do you find yourself in front of the movement? Does your horse stop at jumps regularly? Even the slightest tilt forward will affect your horses ability to engage the hind end (put more weight on the hind end). As soon as you round your shoulders, you put a whole lot of extra weight over the front feet. Armed with this knowledge, we can now use this as an aid as well. Lean back a touch when you want to slow down or stop, before you use the reins. If you do that every time, pretty soon your horse will be stopping without reins at all. Round shoulders will also affect the way your elbow and arm moves and will make it more difficult to have that lovely `elastic elbows’ feeling of connection between your horses mouth and your hand. Make it your first response to look up, sit back and lean back a touch!

Exercises to improve your shoulders Sometimes the easiest way to fix a problem is to exaggerate it first. Really round your shoulders, then bring them back, feel the difference? The problem with bringing your shoulders back is it can make your shoulders tense and block the nice flow of energy down your arm to the reins. So, another way to do it, is to think of something else instead. I often use the thought of bringing my shoulder blades closer together and lifting my breastbone. This also has the double benefit of engaging the small muscles that hold your spine which will give you better posture in the rest of your life as well. I also use a fantastic visualisation that is amazing. This one picture in my mind has made a huge difference to me personally about the Spanish Riding School. I was in Vienna about 18 months ago, so this particularly hits home. If you have seen pictures of these amazing Lipizzaners and their riders, you may remember the gorgeous jackets they wear. They have a double line of gold buttons down the front. Think of the proud way they hold themselves and think about those gold buttons, do they point down to the ground as the rider slouches? No, of course not! So, when you are riding, imagine you are riding in the Spanish Riding School and make sure they can see the gleam on all those golden buttons! The Horse Report

No bit, no brakes By MEREDITH RANSLEY Quantumsavvy.com It took me by surprise recently, when a student I was talking with told me that, on a recent trail ride, a fellow rider had trotted past her uttering these words - “No bit, no brakes!” It surprised me for two reasons one being that someone she didn't know would say something like this to her, simply because she was riding in a rope hackamore, but mostly because of what was actually said in itself. Having spent the last 18 years travelling the world teaching horsemanship to people from all disciplines and all walks of life, it struck me as just how ineffective I was being! Many people still don't truly understand horses and what makes them tick. Normally I'm a pretty easy going person who doesn't like to rock the boat too much or offer opinions on what other people think and believe when it comes to horses, unless I'm asked. I try to help and to educate them but I am also mindful of their feelings and prior experiences. I try to guide them to becoming good horsemen rather than just dealing out home truths. But this comment from an unknown person came just at the right time for me. It came on top of two other inci-

dents and was simply the tipping point that pushed me into stepping up onto my soap box and speaking up. I know that over all the years and miles I've invested into my students, I have helped many, many people and horses and even saved a few lives, so it breaks my heart when I find out that I have missed someone, or let them down. Too many times over all these years, I've got a phone call or an email or had a conversation with someone that began, “Do you remember..?” and I know exactly what is coming next. Either the person or the horse mentioned has been terribly injured or even killed. I also know without a doubt that in the huge majority of cases, this could have been prevented. That with a bit of skill and true horsemanship knowledge, the accident would never have happened and the person or horse would be alive today. This has been my life quest for the last 18 years and will be for the rest of my life. To teach people the truth about horsemanship, to truly understand their horses and what they need, to become safe and skilful and reaching all their dreams and goals whatever they be. In the week prior to the conversation with my student, I'd had two other conversations with

Master Horseman Shane Ransley is holding courses to help develop confidence and a connecting for riders with their horses thanks to Quantum Savvy.

separate people that both began with “Do you remember..?” I've lost count now after all these years, of just how many times I've heard these words and each time my heart just sinks as I wait to hear who it was this time. Often it is a friend of a student, or someone a friend or colleague knows, that they've been trying to encourage to come along to an event with us, or to get some help with their horse. They've seen the imminent danger and have tried to persuade the person to come along and meet us or get started on our program but to no avail. Either they wouldn't listen or just acted too late. In these recent incidents, one lady was a friend of a friend and the other was a young girl doing a Horse Husbandry course of some description with a leading education program here in Australia.

Both times the girls were on Thoroughbreds fresh off the track and in both cases the horses wore bridles. They were both experienced riders who never the less found themselves on out of control horses, that no bit on earth was going to stop and both of them paid for their lack of horsemanship knowledge with their lives. As a mum I feel very deeply about these girls I never met. One was a mum whose children now have to live without her, the other, an 18-year-old girl, whose mother is now living with the heartache only those who have lost a child can know. I know, you'll think that riding an ex-racehorse makes the chances of riding a runaway much higher. A huge proportion of horses that students bring to lessons with us are exactly that. continued page 35

Seek good horsemanship - make it your goal  from page 34 Horses off the track that someone (usually inexperienced) has picked up cheap. And it's not the fact that it's a racehorse as such that is the problem. I'm sure we've all seen someone riding a runaway of some description. Horses of all breeds can get a fright and become an out-of-control missile, even little ponies. And I'm equally sure we've all seen that self same person pulling on two reins for all they're worth, trying to no avail to get the horse to stop. Let's face it, in most cases, the horse only stops when it's good and ready. If it is scared enough it'll just keep running until something else stops it, or its flight response runs out. Having a bit in its mouth makes absolutely no difference what so ever. I've done thousands of presentations and demonstrations over the years to audiences all over the world. Train for the Dressage arena or the track Dressage instructor and trainer Sally Evans has been associated with horses for around 30 years. Her focus has been on dressage riding for approximately 20 years but before this she was involved in eventing, showjumping, riding racehorses in track work and various other horse sports. She is an EA/NCAS Level 2 Dressage specialist coach, a nationally accredited judge, young horse trainer and FEI competitor. Some of her career highlights with her horses, Assassin and A’Seduction, include: 2011 Sydney CDI Intermediate 2 Champion; 2011 QLD Grand Prix Big Tour Champion; 2010 3 Big Tour Grand Prix Championships; Australian National Championships – Top 10 in Grand Prix; 2009 Sydney CDI, CDN Grand Prix Winner; 3 Big Tour Championships 2006 and 2007; member of the national Dressage squad; and member of the state Dressage squad. SALLY’S DRESSAGE STABLES (SDS) At SDS, they offer Dressage training for the rider and the horse, including the racehorse in training. They also train and compete their progeny who are by Grand Prix stallion, A’Seduction. At SDS, a range of services are offered:

From Dressage to racehorse cross-training, Sally Evan’s Dressage Stables offers a range of different services.

School horses For the Dressage Rider At SDS, they have a lovely kind schooling mare called Legs, who is training towards Medium level. She is exceptionally soft and has wonderful movement and temperament. She is the ideal horse to refine your seat and soft aids. She also can go into the round yard to offer lessons for newly learning riders and young riders. On occasion, we offer her for riders to have a chance to compete dressage on her at competition training events of the local dressage clubs, a fantastic opportunity.

Lessons on Grand Prix Stallion A’Seduction. For the more advanced rider they offer advanced dressage lessons on their Grand Prix Stallion A’Seduction. There would not be many opportunities such as this offered on a stallion of his quality having consistently come into the top 12 in Australia and being a GP State Champion. Training for You and Your Horse. SDS offers training for you and your horse. They have accommodation for you together with your horse for short stays. Your horse can also stay with full livery service and be trained by Sally at SDS. For the Racehorse Owner/Trainer They offer cross-training. The flexibility and responsiveness they achieve can be advantageous on the racetrack, it helps with their overall health and well-being and certainly increases their chances of finding a good new home once the race days are over. For inquiries contact Sally on 0402 078 882 or check out www.sallyevans.com.au

A’Seduction and his girls make it a family affair By SALLY EVANS

Training of dressage horses, lessons at home, and clinics

Sally Evans 0402078882 EA NCAS LEVEL 2 DRESSAGE COACH FEI COMPETITOR & EA JUDGE

You know, my stallion A’seduction is now 16-years-old, we bought him when he was only eight months old. He has won so many Regional and State Championships and so many trophy rugs, I have lost count. We competed in a total of six young dressage horse events, every time finishing in the top three. He was three times a champion of his age and twice being awarded the champion of champions. And now this year, we have got two of his baby girls qualified for the Young Horse classes at the Sydney CDI and as well as Seduction himself going to do the Grand Prix International class. I never, in my dreams, thought that this would ever happen. We are very proud of Seduction and also his two girls and he has produced some amazing lovely trainable young horses. There are many out competing now and doing extremely well. The two girls going in the young horse classes are named, A Heaven Sent and A Spider Bite. They are going in the five-year-old and the six-year-old events. The fields are so strong, with so many very nice top quality horses, but you have to realise that they judge just what they see on the day and if you have a little glitch then you suffer the consequences. The true horses will show up how the years will pass with many consistent performances and the results will be on the board. And ultimately that is want we all want really, is a well-behaved, calm flowing active and alive test, then we progress up the levels to Grand Prix. Heaven Sent, has the most beautiful temperament and lovely suspended trot action, Penny is also a very pretty girl. Pen, is my little worker girl, she loves training and practising all her work. The only thing is that when she was growing up, I nicknamed her my Nimbin Pony, as she loves to be outside with nature, she loves being in her paddock and she is very laid back in general. As she grows and matures, I believe Pen will be the near perfect dressage competitor.

Sally Evans on A’Seduction

Spider Bite and yes she was actually bitten when she was a yearling. I know people were going to ask, `how did she get that name?’ CC has already won three championship rugs herself. We call CC our OH&S ( official health and safety) girl, CC makes sure everything is safe before she goes anyway. She is spunky, studious, and is the life at any party she goes to !! CC has the big plan picture already set in her goals..Grand Prix So it is very exciting for Peter and I to have a family affair going to the Sydney CDI International 3 Star 2013. And of course thanks to a big team of friends, students and owners who help make this plan happen.

Proud sire A’Seduction

Reining supreme in the arena In National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) competitions, reining horses are judged individually as they complete one of 10 specified patterns. Each pattern includes small slow circles, large fast circles, flying lead changes, roll backs over the hocks, 360 degree spins and the exciting sliding stops that are the hallmark of the reining horse. One or more judges will score each horse beginning at 70. The scoring system then adds or subtracts from .5 to 1.5 on each maneuver. Penalties points may also be subtracted from the score for incorrect performance. A scribe keeps track of each judge's maneuver scores and penalties on a score sheet. Scores are calculated and announced after each run. The reining horse must be willfully guided. Deductions should be applied for gagging, excessive head raising, stopping or backing sideways, refusals, anticipation, stumbling or falling and disobedience. Credit should be given for smoothness, finesse, willing attitude and accuracy. Controlled speed during the pattern raises the level of difficulty so should be rewarded with higher scores provided the maneuvers are still performed correctly. Reining horses may perform with individual style according to their conformation. The sport of Reining is open to all breeds and is exciting and pleasing to watch. BEGINNER HORSE 1. Open to any age horse that has not won

Reining is one of the most spectacular equine arena sports going due to the speed and action involved.

EKKA ISSUES HENDRA ADVISORY The RNA is adopting Australian best-practice in the fight against Hendra virus, with all horses attending or competing at 2013 Royal Queensland Show (Ekka) requiring mandatory Hendra virus vaccination. The new Hendra virus vaccine safeguards the health and wellbeing of horses and their owners/handlers by breaking the cycle of transmission from flying foxes to horses and also from horses to humans. The RNA's primary consideration is the health and safety of all people and animals at the event. While the risk of contracting Hendra virus is extremely low, RNA officials have made the decision to introduce mandatory Hendra virus vaccinations as it is the best available preventative measure to mitigate the potential risks of this deadly virus. They have worked closely with Biosecurity Queensland and experienced biosecurity veterinarians to review and update the RNA's Biosecurity Plan. The Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) supports the RNA's decision to make vaccinations mandatory with the aim of protecting horses and humans. The AVA's President Ben Gardiner said the research has demonstrated the vaccine is highly effective in preventing disease in horses and stopping the transmission of the Hendra virus. “The vaccine is the most effective tool available in the fight against Hendra virus and the AVA strongly recommends that all horses in Australia are vaccinated to protect them and to protect humans from this potentially fatal virus," he said. The vaccine is administered by accredited veterinarians in an initial course of two injections. The RNA's additional biosecurity measures to mitigate risks of Hendra virus include: comprehensive stable cleaning and disinfecting measures plywood and plastic barriers between stables restricting public access to horses ensuring the areas under fig trees are thoroughly cleaned early each morning limiting the feeding and watering of horses to their stables. Exhibitors interested in entering the 2013 Royal Queensland Show's Horse Competition are encouraged to talk with their veterinarian about the vaccination process to ensure that they are fully informed. RNA officials believe mandatory vaccinations for Hendra virus and the additional biosecurity measures outlined above will ensure the highest standard of protection for the show's horse competitors and exhibitors. For more information about the Hendra virus vaccine, please visit the RNA's frequently asked questions or www.health4horses.com.au Please visit www.royalqueenslandshow.com.au for more information on the entry requirements for the Horse Competition or email the RNA Entries Team at entries@royalqueenslandshow.com.au

The Horse Report

Hope beats the heat at State Dressage The first of nine Pony Club NSW State Championships for the year was held at the Exhibition Centre, Wagga Wagga from the January 19 to 20. Competitors arriving on the Friday were met with extremely hot weather. Thankfully conditions cooled down when a southerly blew through Friday night, making for more manageable weather over the weekend. The Pony Club NSW State Dressage Championships hosted by Zone 12, attracted 120 competitors from all over NSW and Queensland. Competition was close with riders competing across two separate Dressage tests with the overall champion being determined by their collective placing. Top scores occurred across all age divisions. In the under 13 age group, Jessica McDonald was the age champion for the second year in a row riding horse Deltry Belucci from Wallsend Pony Club. Brianna Cartwright from Mangrove Mountain Pony Club riding horse, Baringa First Class, was the 13 and Under 15 age champion. Bathurst Pony Club rider, Sarah Farraway on Rum N Coke took out first place in the 13 and under 15 age group. While in the 17 and under 25 age group, Georgia Hope from Canberra Riding Pony Club, placed first on her horse Kalgan Esprit. The Champion Zone with the highest scores overall was Zone 16. Champion Zone 27 riders took out the Fitness Check prize. NSW was the Champion State with winning riders Sarah Farraway, Georgia Hope, Brianna Cartwright and Jessica McDonald. Georgia Hope, 17 and Under 25 Age Champion, was extremely happy with her performance at the event. “I have competed at state dressage every year since I was 12-years-old and this is the first time I have won age champion at state dressage and placed first in both the dres-

sage tests. Last year I placed second overall with a first and a third place,” she said. “It was also great to be in the winning zone team with my friends from zone 16 and in the NSW state team.” Thinking of the future, Georgia aims to “continue to enjoy my riding and succeed as much as I can”. For Brianna Cartwright 13 and under 15 years age champion this was a very special win. “I couldn’t have been happier. Buddy has had an amazing year at Pony Club and in the Pony dressage and I will now be focusing on moving Buddy up to Elementary. My future goals are to continue enjoying schooling and competing my ponies,” Brianna said.

The next State Championship is the State Sporting and Campdrafting Championships. This year’s event will be hosted by Zone 25, at Gloucester Showground, Gloucester from the April 13 - 14

The Horse Report Landmark Classic Campdraft sale sets new $4.75m record A major campdraft sale in Tamworth has defied a challenging market to show there is plenty of interest and demand for quality quarter horse and stock horses. The sixth annual Landmark event in February, posted a record $4.75 million in sales in Tamworth, NSW, last week. The catalogue of 562 registered Quarter Horses and Australian Stock Horses sold to a record $120,000 for a stallion and achieved an 89 per cent clearance and $11,657 average – $600 up on last year. The four-day event saw a total 1200 campdraft runs pass through the area, attracted a record number of entries and spectators and culminated in the all-time high sale. Landmark’s national livestock director Mark Barton said the Campdraft Classic started on the back on the Equine Influenza crisis and many people were anxious about their business. “We saw the event as a chance to support the campdrafting community,” he said. “Now, the Landmark Classic is Australia’s largest performance horse sale and is proud to support the sport of campdrafting, which remains Australia’s fastest growing sport.” The top priced stallion, One Stylish Pepto, sired by a Pepto Stylish Oak, smashed last year’s sale topper by $66,000. Entered by an Albury syndicate, the red roan stallion was bought by the One Moore Syndicate’s, Peter Shakespeare. Robb Belsher, spokesperson for the One Stylish Pepto Syndicate said they had achieved what they wanted and more with the stallion. “We are looking forward to seeing him succeed and bring others as much fun and joy that he brought us,” Mr Belsher said. FULL SALE RESULTS: 27 stallions sold to $120,000 and averaged $17,222. 148 geldings sold to $23,000 and averaged $8157. 232 mares sold to $71,000 and averaged $13,257. was Amac Oaks Serena, an Acres Destiny mare out of world champion and ABCRA Horse of the Year, Oaks Serene. Bruce and Julie McNaughton of Walcha, NSW, bred and trained the four-year old mare which sold on to the Kempsey Quarter Horse Syndicate. Terry Ryan from Chinchilla bought the $23,000 top-priced gelding, offered by Warwick and Fiona Lawrence of Rosebrook, NSW. In all, 27 stallions averaged $17,222; 148 Geldings sold to $23,000 and averaged $8157 and 232 mares topped at $71,000 and averaged $13,257. Competitors vied for a prize pool in excess of $200,000 in the Landmark Classic Campdraft – an event for horses five-yearsold and under bought in a previous Landmark Classic sale. Walcha rider Ben McNaughton claimed the $35,000 winners’ cheque on Knights Top That gelding, The Ranch Jannali, which he bought at the Classic two years ago. Terry and Edna Hillier of Illabo were awarded the $5000 vendor’s cheque. Mr McNaughton also received a $6000 Beresford trophy saddle, a service fee to legendary Quarterhorse Lethal Lena, donated by Cutting Edge Quarter Horses, a pallet of feed donated by Omega Feeds and an Angus Barrett saddle pad, which was also awarded to all 30 finalists. Equal second place was shared by Troy Palmer riding Hannaford Stud Savannah and Ben Hall on Phoenix Rockstar.

PERFORMA•3

®

Omega 3 EPA & DHA Oil

Targeting performance, health and wellbeing through improved blood circulation and oxygen delivery The health and performance benefits of Omega 3 fatty acids from fish oil are well known to horse owners and trainers. Omega 3 fatty acids from fish oil make the body’s membranes, including red blood cells, cell walls and blood vessels more flexible, improving blood circulation and the delivery of oxygen to muscles. This helps to delay fatigue and improve stamina in performance horses and improves health and wellbeing in all horses, including aged horses and ponies. Feeding plant based vegetable oils can’t deliver the Omega 3 benefits gained from the addition of EPA and DHA rich fish oil. Corn oil, safflower and sunflower oils have a poor Omega 3: Omega 6 ratio which can have an inflammatory effect if fed at high levels.

The benefits of adding Vitamite Performa 3 Oil to your horse’s daily ration will occur in 3 stages: STAGE 1: 21-28 days – Omega 3 replaces Omega 6 in white blood cells STAGE 2: 50-60 days – Omega 3:6 ratio starts to change in membranes & cell walls. STAGE 3: 90–100 days – the membrane cells have completed a life cycle and all new cells have their new Omega 3 : Omega 6 ratio.
