The Horse Report

Horse owners need to be aware of horse movement requirements in Queensland to avoid penalties.

Requirements for moving horses Horse riding and ownership is an increasingly popular pastime. Movement of horses between home and competition or training days means that there is an increased risk of the spread of pests and diseases between horses from different locations. A major component of biosecurity is the ability to trace where livestock and horses are kept and being able to trace their movements. As part of this traceability, properties are allocated a Property Identification Code (PIC). It is a requirement for owners of livestock to have a Property Identification Code (PIC) A PIC is a unique eight-character number assigned by Local Land Services to properties with livestock. This property registration system allows for the tracing of livestock to assist with disease and chemical residue management. Whether a horse is kept on a farm or even just a house block, an owner needs to apply for a PIC if they don’t already have one. If agisting a horse on someone else’s property or stable, an owner needs to ensure that they have a PIC and that they have a record of it and permission to use it. To obtain a PIC, an owner must complete an application form and lodge it with a Local Land Services office. The onus is on individual property and stock owners to comply with PIC requirements.

The infringement notice penalty for not having a PIC is $550. In Queensland as of July 1, every time a horse (or other designated animal) moves off a property, a movement record must be created. The new legislation recognises the need for more flexible methods of recording animal movements. It allows for a range of methods to be used as a valid record as long as it captures the following details: •name of the person completing the record •where the horses/s are being moved from •where the horses/s are being moved to and the name and address of the person receiving the horse/s •the date of movement •description of horse. Movement records can be created in any format providing it captures the above specified information, including: •diary or logbook entries •notepad or exercise book •email •text message •Excel spreadsheet Most horse events will require some form of Horse Health Declaration which states that the horse has been well in the past few days. For more details about PICs, contact the nearest Local Land Services office and for information on Horse Movement records visit www.daf.qld.gov.au/biosecurity/.../hor se-registration-and-movement-records

The Horse Report

World's smallest horse is no tall story By DAVID ELLIS There's a horse in America that looks like any other except for one thing - she stands only about as high as, or even less than, many a family pet dog. Thumbelina as she is named, is a dwarf off-spring of a couple of extreme miniature horses known as Falabellas, that themselves grow only to between 70 and 86 centimetres tall (20 to 34 inches.) And in her case she is half that at a mere 43cm high (17 inches) and weighs in at a very petite 26kg (57 pounds)‌ or about the size of an Aussie kelpie. The Falabella was originally developed in Argentina from a rare species of horse discovered there in the mid-1800s, and introduced to America in the 1940s for their novelty value in hauling miniature stagecoaches in street parades and around wineries. When Thumbelina was born, her owners on a farm in Missouri realised she was highly intelligent and trainable, and today after having put her through some speciallydesigned training programs,

and other outings. And as she was born with foot defects, they have designed special shoes for her so that

A bronze tops off Rio campaign With a bronze in their bags, Australia’s eventing team from Rio de Janeiro are eager to begin their campaign for gold at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Chris Burton, Sam Griffiths, Shane Rose and Stuart Tinney won Australia its seventh Olympic team eventing medal, continuing Australia’s strong tradition in the sport. The team came close to winning gold after dominant cross country performances but in a tightly contested show jumping finale showcasing the sport at its best, the team finished up with the bronze. In the individual event, Griffiths and Burton narrowly missed the medals after finishing fourth and fifth respectively. Griffiths’ horse Paulank Brockagh was a standout on the final day, producing two clear show jumping rounds. “It felt awesome, my horse tried her heart out,” said Griffiths of his last day performance. “I can only do this thanks to my horse and I was just so pleased with her and that’s what makes it so emotional for us and of course being at an Olympic Games is always an emotional time.” “At one stage we were in the gold medal position and it was ours to take. “It was a day of up and downs but it was good for the sport. It was an exciting day.” Five-time Dressage Olympian Mary Hanna is also firmly focused on Tokyo. Should Hanna make the team she could become Australia’s first female athlete to

attend six Olympic Games The 61-year-old grandmother attended her first Olympic Games at age 41 in Atlanta and is proof that age is no barrier in equestrian sport; she’s just as motivated as ever. “I’m completely prepared, I’ve got two horses up there, I’m more prepared than anybody,” said Hanna. Hanna’s team-mates Lyndal Oatley, Kristy Oatley and Sue Hearn helped the team to an overall ninth position while individually Hanna was 39th. In the show-jumping Edwina Tops-

Alexander and Matt Williams did Australia proud after both qualified through to the final. Tops-Alexander equalled her best ever Olympic Games performance finishing in ninth position while Williams was 28th. The Aussie team captain Tops-Alexander and her horse Lintea Tequila were consistent performers over the course of the competition but in the final round of the individual final the pair knocked the third last fence - it was enough to end her medal hopes. Australia finished the team’s show jumping event in 13th position.

How to deal with stall wetters By DAVID LOVELL BVSC

Some horses that consume excess amounts of water and are stall wetters may be affected by stress.

drome is what is called physchogenic water drinking. Big words, but put simply, it means that it has been a behavioural issue, almost always precipitated by stress. Stress is real buzz word in today’s society, and seems to be blamed for nearly every problem that befalls an individual. Horses are certainly very sensitive to so called stress, purely by the demands that domestication by humans places on them. They are naturally a nomadic pasture animal, but we lock them up, change their diet and impose a seemingly endlessly complicated array of perfor-

Your horse continually drinks the bucket dry. Every time you refill the container, the horse empties it in no time and the cycle continues. If we accept that what goes in, has to come out, the water has to go somewhere and unfortunately passes out via the kidneys, saturating the bedding in the stall. A very frustrating and not uncommon syndrome in horses is the problem of “stall wetters”. Fortunately, many of these cases are self limiting and the horse seemingly self cures after a period of time, however, there are still a lot of horses in which the condition persists and owners are at a loss as to what to do. Veterinary investigation of the problem is complex and usually requires hospitalisation but there is a very well defined protocol that can be followed, usually pinpointing the problem, and in many cases, allowing a cure to evolve. By far the greatest majority of horses do not necessarily have a

mance and “gearing up” demands that interfere with the horse’s natural instincts. Sometimes, it may be only a very subtle change in the horse’s circumstances, that may be very difficult to define, that triggers the response. (Thankfully it seems that no one has thought to blame Hendra vaccine as yet, however even I would concede that this may well be a possibility!). As I said, many instances are transient, the horse settles and returns to normal. However, the longer the problem continues, the more likely it will be that the physiology of kidney function will change, and the condition progresses into a very definite metabolic “disease”. We have a well defined progressive investigative process that we use at our hospital, that allows a logical, sequential investigation, ruling out syndromes along the way, to eventually arrive at a diagnosis. Obviously the first step is a complete clinical examination of the horse, which in most cases seems normal. A blood test is the first diagnostic aid, and then we usually progress onto to a series of urine collections and analyses. This is the most difficult part of the process, as urine collection can be time consuming and difficult to get the horse to co-operate. Presuming the clinical examination is normal, we then look at the blood, particularly assessing the protein fractions, and most importantly the specific enzyme markers of kidney disease. The Horse Report

Analysis of urine determines cause ‰ from page 14 By far the great majority of horses are normal as true kidney disease is rare in the horse. Grass eaters like the horse do not have the protein load in their diet which predisposes humans and carnivores such as the dog and cat to severe kidney disease. However, kidney disease can occur and the blood test is the first step in assessing this. Most commonly, we need to perform analysis of the urine. Initial assessment particularly looks at the specific gravity, glucose levels, cellular and protein levels, and the presence or absence of blood. High glucose, combined with some blood markers can suggest diabetes mellitus, but again, this is quite uncommon in the horse. Most often, the urinalysis is fairly normal, apart from the specific gravity, which almost always is low in water drinkers. Now it gets more difficult. We now perform what is called a water deprivation test. We collect urine at time zero and then withhold all water, usually for 8 – 12 hours. We are primarily looking to see that the horse can actually concentrate the urine and raise the specific gravity. Most commonly, they do, which definitively confirms that the horse’s kidneys, and kidney function, is normal. Failure to concentrate, in the face of progressive relative dehydration, is a strong, marker of impaired kidney function which then makes us considering focussing on the kidneys considering tests such as ultrasound and biopsy examinations. Obviously with-

Horses can drink 20 to 40 litres per day.

holding water is a very significant impost on the horse and it is essential to regularly monitor the horse for any development of signs of dehydration. The other difficulty obviously is that when water is withheld, there is little urine produced and it can be frustrating trying to collect the post deprivation sample. We have a harness that we can place on the horse in the stall. Eventually he urinates and the sample is collected. If the horse easily concentrates the urine, then this would confirm that it is physchogenic. Failure to concentrate, however, in the majority of refractory, seemingly clinically normal horses, suggests a condition we call “medullary washout. This develops in these horses as a relative electrolyte loss in the medulla of the kidney. This is the chamber that accumulates the urine before it passages down to the bladder. Loss of electrolytes in this medullary chamber, creates an osmotic gradient across the

membranes that continually “sucks more fluid across the membranes, increasing the urine production, and perpetuating the problem. This is the common syndrome in true stall wetters and we can very often manage this by what we call a “Modified Water Deprivation process. In this, we calculate a volume dose of water to allow the horse to drink over time, and supplement the horse with electrolytes by mouth. In many cases, this corrects the osmotic gradient, and permits the horse to return to a normal urine production cycle. Occasionally, there are horses that still cannot concentrate their urine. We can then administer synthetic ant diuretic hormone, normally produced in the pituitary gland, and if this results in concentration, then we can confirm true diabetes insipidus, a term that is often erroneously applied to this condition, which in reality is quite rare. Occasionally also, there can be true electrolyte deficiencies in the diet. In these cases, we can confirm this by tests we refer to as fractional electrolyte creatinine clearance tests which result in a mathematical determination of the true status. We used to do these relatively frequently in earlier years but a better understanding of the condition has directed us more towards the relative deficiency we see in medullary washout. In summary, true kidney disease in the horse, fortunately, is very rare. Stall wetters, or polydyspia – polyuria, is quite common. Many cases self cure, particularly if the stress is removed, often simply requiring a short time out in the paddock.

Diet is crucial for mare and foal nutrition Written by Equine ANTOINETTE FOSTER Dip. Nut. Equine Nutritional Therapist and Medical Herbalist

Our brood mares require the correct daily nutrient intake to support the unborn foal and to ensure than when the foal is born; she can sustain the health and well being and growth rate of the foal. A well-balanced diet is essential and feeds such as the Johnsons Natural formula Mare and Foal is simply perfect. It is high in roughage but also contains an excellent balance of grains including barley and oats. These feeds are quite unique in that they are the only clean feed available and are a steamed and compressed long stem fibre pellet, as opposed to commercial pellets which are processed prior to being produced, become powdery very quickly or soft and soggy when wet. Commercially produced pellets do not encourage normal chewing and grinding at the point of the mouth, whereas the Johnsons Natural Formula feeds actually encourage the horse to chew, creating that highly valued saliva production and digestibility. Feeding a high roughage diet to any horse is essential to maintain a healthy digestive system and long term health. It is important to feed our foals safely and effectively, neither overfeeding nor underfeeding. There are many conditions associated with malnutrition. Often the word malnutrition is used in the wrong way; malnutrition can mean overweight or underweight, which means there is a major shortfall in the supply of nutrients to the body.

Correct feeding can help prevent disease From page 16

It is therefore very wise to seek professional advice before jumping onto any single DOD Bandwagon. OCD (impaired blood supply to cartilage delays conversion of cartilage to bone resulting in abnormal thick cartilage or joint surfaces, the cartilage is therefore only loosely attached to underlying bone and may become detached causing inflammation within joint) occurs particularly in young rapid growing individuals, accelerating a horses growth by overfeeding may increase the risk of OCD. Generally the stifle and hock joints are effected and clinical signs of the disease usually become obvious in the first two years of growth. So in the case of OCD correct feeding will probably prevent this disease. Weanlings require almost twice the amount of protein than that of a mature horse. Correct nutrition means supplying your foal with right amount of water, protein, fibre, fat, minerals, carbohydrates and vitamins, a shortfall of any of these nutrients could lead to illness. Nutrients provide replacement molecules, provide energy and allow for growth. Our foal's survival depends on the survival of cells. Approximately 70% of the body is water, it is vital, as it is involved in digestion,

Correct nutrition can be a balancing act with every horse requiring different needs.

regulating body temperature, lubrication and metabolism. Water must be readily available and fresh clean water must be provided on a daily basis. Sufficient amounts of carbohydrates must be supplied to allow for normal growth rate, athletic ability and resistance to disease. Proteins, (chains of amino acids) are vital for our foal's growth also and the 12 essential amino acids must be supplied by the diet. A deficiency of protein can cause a decrease in food intake, and the condition of the coat may be affected. On the other hand feeding too much protein will mean the

excess protein will be utilised as an energy source far less efficiently than carbohydrates or fat. Minerals and trace elements are also vital for growth and protection, as are vitamins. Feeding your foal is not very complicated, but it is important to remember that every foal and horse is different and they cannot be fed in the same way. Because individuality plays a big role in deciding what you will feed your foal, I do not agree with RDA recommendations, but, like many clinical biochemists and naturopaths I agree with Optimal Daily Allowances, this makes far more sense, when you consider that

we as humans do not all require the same nutrient intake, we are all individuals and so are our horses. Supplements such as BreedPlus and GrowthFix are highly recommended for you foals and young growing horses. Feeds such as the Johnson's Natural Formula Mare and Foal offers a perfectly balanced diet with the inclusion of hays and supplements, easy to feed and very cost effective. Using a Synbiotic such as BioEquus would also be ideal. For further information on managing your foal or broodmares health please contact me on 03 97756422 or email antoinette@hiform.com.au

Aussies aim to continue Paralympic success Three Paralympic debutants will join Beijing 2008 Paralympian Sharon Jarvis to make up the 2016 Australian Paralympic Equestrian team set to compete in Rio starting on September 7. As the only Para-equestrian rider on the team to have previously competed at a Paralympic Games, Jarvis will lead teammates Emma Booth, Katie Umback and Lisa Martin on the equestrian arena at Deodoro Stadium. Australia has won nine medals in equestrian at the Paralympic Games – three gold, one silver and five bronze since the sport

was introduced in Atlanta 1996. Kate McLoughlin, Chef de Mission of the 2016 Australian Paralympic Team hopes the tally will continue to grow in Rio. “London 2012 saw the Equestrian Team win Australia’s very first Paralympic gold medal of the Games, and although there will be just 11 medals on offer in Rio, we’ve got high hopes that Sharon, Emma, Katie and Lisa can enhance our country’s record of success in Para-equestrian,” McLoughlin said. “It will be tough, but I’m confident in our team’s ability to succeed.”

THE HORSE

THAT TALKS Did you know that horses talk? You only need to listen to the signs they show you to understand what they’re saying. They could talk to you by hanging the tongue out, getting the tongue over the bit or rolling the tongue back. These are all signs of bit pain and are their way of telling you. Those aren’t the only signs: many may chew, grind, grab or chomp on the bit because they are trying to hold the bit pressure off their tongue. Some will lean on the rein, hang on one rein bad, pull the reins through your hands, head toss, run through the bit, or bolt, while others will rear and buck to get rid of the pain or the rider at the end of the reins. Horses will open their mouth to give them more room, enabling them to roll their tongue back or hang it out to escape the bit pain. Others will rub their face on their leg or the rider at the end of the ride - this is them saying “Please get the bit out of my mouth! It has hurt me!â€? There is extensive research behind the Winning Tongue Plate Bit, and combined with input from leading trainers and riders the design of the bits has helped to overcome these problems. These riders have stated it’s like having power steering and the difference the WTP bit makes is comparable to wearing comfortable slippers all day instead of high heels.

The Horse Report

It takes hard work to feel 'lucky' By TANJA KRAUS I received a text message the other day, from a lady who has had quite a journey with her little horse. She has put in time, effort and money along the way, to develop the relationship between her and her little horse. The text message read along the lines that she was riding with a group and someone in the group said that they were so lucky to have such a good horse and then they went on to say that the horse the lady was riding (the lady who had texted me) had come a long way, to be able to be ridden out with a group of horses comfortably. This made her feel great, to be recognised for how far they had come together but she then said to me, "But you know what, I won't feel 'lucky' in a couple of years, I will feel proud of me and him, because it takes a lot of work to ‘feel lucky’”. I sent her a text back saying that I loved that, and I will be using it as a topic for my next newsletter. Phil and I have always said "luck is spelt W.O.R.K" and that applies to everything even to our horses. I had the same thought recently - I spent three hours filming the foundation ridden skills for the upcoming DVD and my horse Cooper was an absolute star. Sure he got impatient a few times, but he didn't 'play up' the way that he would have once upon a time. I said to the videographer, "I'm lucky", talk-

Hard work and building foundation ridden skills can result in having happy, relaxed and enjoyable horses to ride. ing about how great Cooper was. Actually I'm not "lucky" - I've put the blood, sweat and tears into that horse over the years and now he is educated. He's not 'quiet' as many people say to me (“you are so lucky he is so quiet”), he isn't quiet - he's educated.

There is a big difference. So next time you feel 'lucky' - give yourself a pat on the back, because you have put the effort in to feel that way - and next time you want to tell someone they are lucky - give them a pat on the back! Happy trails

“As well as being an outstanding horsewoman, Tanja is an excellent communicator and teacher. So the take-home value of her clinics is huge. Her ability to read each rider and each horse enables her to tailor her advice and instruction in the most productive and effective way. Tanja’s guidance and support has transformed the way I ride and handle my horses and I cannot recommend her clinics highly enough.” Paula Todd, Bangalow, NSW.

The Horse Report Remi Stud Young Rider Scholarship goes to Tassie The Remi Stud Young Rider Scholarship is an annual scholarship and is awarded to a very deserving Young Rider who has the talent and dedication in either dressage or eventing, but needs financial assistance to purchase a horse of their dreams. Cheryl from Remi Stud has put together a great team of supporters to help make this dream come true for one lucky young rider. This scholarship gives an amazing opportunity to a young rider to have entry into the equestrian industry thanks to a variety of supporters. The scholarship includes the ownership of a purpose bred Hanoverian weanling by either Lauries As or Fishermans Friend - two of the best performed Hanoverian stallions in Australia - plus the support package which includes feed from Prydes Easifeed, registration with Equestrian Queensland, marketing from Equestrian Australia, legal support from HorseForce, a saddle, bridle and saddlecloth from Edwards Saddleworld, 10 weeks training by Team Van Den Berge when the horse turns three-years-old, show product from Dr Show, riding attire from Belrock Equestrian, and veterinary care from Westvets - a total package valued at over $30,000. The inaugural winner of this scholarship in 2013 was Isabella Wilkinson-McIntyre and she received the beautiful colt, Remi Livingstone S by Lauries As. ‘Doc’ is now under saddle and progressing very well under the tutelage of Team Van Den Berge, and will make his debut in the competition arena next year. This year the Remi Stud Young Rider Scholarship was awarded to George Grover from Kingston in Tasmania. George received the stunning colt Remi Lord of the Vale by Lauries As (imp)/ Court Musician xx by Salieri xx. Lauries As (imp) needs no introduction, but Pete is also from a very successful competition mare line, being the full brother to Remi Lord of the Dance (Australian Champion Foal), and

This year the Remi Stud Young Rider Scholarship was awarded to George Grover from Kingston in Tasmania.

Remi Lord of the Sun, (Champion 2 y/o All Breeds Youngstock Show), and 1/2 brother to EMC Remi Lady Locksley (Advanced Dressage Champion), Remi Faberge (Medium Dressage Champion), and Elite Mare Remi La Bamba (dam of successful progeny herself). Pete, as he is known, will no doubt suit George’s eventing and dressage aspirations. George is a very dedicated young rider and competitor in the field of eventing, so we look forward to seeing him competing Pete in the years ahead. Due to geographical challenges, this dedication presented itself in many ways, not the least needing to travel thousands of kilometres to support his dream if he was to compete on the mainland. Living in Tasmania meant many hours on the road required to compete at any horse events. George has been a member of the Huntingfield Pony and Riding Club since he was very young, and has also participated in many other equestrian disciplines over the years, including polo, mounted games, dressage and showjumping but eventing is his first love. George currently has one horse, a 17-yearold eventer who unfortunately suffered from lameness problems this year, which is signif-

icantly limiting his involvement and progression in the sport. Dedication and talent saw them competing successfully at Pre-Novice level last year, with hopes of moving up to 1*, however the lameness problems saw that dream shattered. George is completing his final year of school this year, and is then hoping to make equestrian, in particular eventing, his career. Despite the geographical disadvantages, George has proven that he is prepared to do whatever it takes to make it in his chosen field. Financially moving to the mainland would incur great expense not only to sustain himself, but to be able to forge a successful career in the equestrian world. Equestrian sport in Tasmania has benefited from his achievements, his talent, inspirations of excellence, and sheer determination to be the best person and rider that he can be. Remi Stud, together with their Supporters (EQ, EA, HorseForce, Edwards Saddleworld, Team VDB, Dr Show, Westvets, Belrock Equestrian, and Prydes Easifeed) are delighted that George Grover is the lucky recipient of the Remi Stud Young Rider Scholarship in 2016, and we look forward to watching George and Remi Lord of the Vale S competing in the years ahead.
